Last night you posted in GoldVike's thread a question about figuring out horse race results. Below is a sample of a race result:

    Race 10
    5 Congaree................ 5.40 2.50 2.10
    2 Monarchos.........................2.20 2.10
    6 Richly Blendedlson.....................2.10

    Wager Type Winning Numbers Payoff
    $2 Pick 3 5-2-5 (3 correct) $207.00
    $2 Daily Double 2-5 $25.40
    $2 Exacta 5-2 $10.00
    $2 Quinnella 2-5 $4.80
    $2 Trifecta 5-2-6 $21.00

All bets are based on a $2 wager. If you played #5 to win for $2 your payout would be $5.40 winning $3.40. Any other bets to win are losers. If you play a horse for place (2nd) The horse must finish first or second. If you played #5 for place the payout would be $2.20 winning 20 cents. If you played #5, #2 or #6 to show the payout would be $2.10 winning 10 cents.

The pick-3 is the results from this race and the previous two races. It is on the winner of each race. The #5 from race 8, the #2 from race 9 and the #5 from this race.

The daily double is the same as the pick-3 but it is only from two races. The #2 from race 9 and the #5 from this race.

The Exacta or Perfecta is the 'EXACT' finish of the win (1st) and place (2nd) horses from this race (10) #5 Congaree and #2 Monarchos. If you played a 2-5 Exacta you would lose. Most people play an Exacta 'BOX'. You are playing both combinations 2-5 and 5-2 for a cost of $4.

A Quinnella is the same as an Exacta. It involved the win and place horses. The 'Exact' order is not required. A 2/5 is a winner. The cost is 1/2 of the Exacta. The payout is usually about 1/2 of the Exacta.

The Trifecta or triple is the same as the Exacta except you need all 3 finishers (win, place and show) in the race. Same as the Exacta most play a Trifecta box 256, 265, 526, 562, 625, 652. A total of six combinations. If you played a straight triple wager 256 for $2 it is a losing ticket.

Many tracks now allow $1 wagers. A Trifecta box for $1 would cost $6. However, the payout would be 1/2 or $10.50 in this race example.

I hope this answered your questions.

        Haz

You won the tri for 25.30. You wagered 48.00. You ended up losing 22.70.

On the exacta you wagered 12.00 but only won 7.90. You ended up losing 4.10.

Hope that helps out. And for instance if you bet 10.00 to win on a horse or 10 dollar anything. The payout is all based on a two dollar wager. So you would get the winnings 5 times for a ten dollar bet. say you bet 5 dollars you would get the winnings 2.5 times.

Ok so maybe what u and wiz are saying is that i did hit two combinations in the trifecta but because the bet cost 48.00 and the pay out was so small all it did was cover my bet basically! Correct?

Yes you did win the exacta and trifecta but it didn't pay enough for you to make a profit. That is correct.

              Boxing four horses

The above example is why boxing four horses usually is a bad idea. You're simply paying for too many combinations. The only time a large box like this makes sense is if you aqre playing mostly longshots and looking for the monster hit.

One way of reducing the cost is to single one of your horses to win and playing the remaining three in the other slots. This reduces the cost of a $1 exacta to a mere $3 and a $1 tri to only $6. You could increase your chances by putting a second horse in the win slot for another $3 on the exacta and $6 on the tri. Your total cost ends up only $12 for the tri rather than the $48. Admittedly, your chances of winning are less but narrowing the picks to only two of the four winning and any of them running second or third greatly reduces your investment while still giving a solid chance at winning.

Boxing 4 horses in an exacta is a poor investment unless the payouts are high. A better choice is to wheel one horse. If I like the 1234 with the 1 on top I'll play 3 exacta 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 for a $12 investment. I'm figuring my top selection will finish no worse than second.

The best success I've even had at the track is playing exactas while throwing out mid-price favorites such as 3/2 or higher. Historically favorites finish first or second 50%. Favorites 3/2 that percentage drops. The payouts will be much greater.
