WinOnBaseball - Saturday Report - 04/17/04
WinOnBaseball - Saturday Report - 04/17/04
-- NEXT UPDATE will be posted before 6:00am Pacific on SUNDAY, April 18.
Season record: 17-22 -5.97 UNITS
All lines effective as of 4/16/2004, 09:52:00 PM - PST. Listed pitchers must start.
Five plays for Saturday:
FLA (BECKETT) -127 over Atl (Ortiz) - 2 UNITS - 7:05pm Pacific
The quality in the skill set of the starting pitching in this matchup heavily favors Beckett, and I think to get him at this number is a nice bargain. He's been dominant in his two starts this year. Granted, he pitched against two weak offenses in Montreal and Philadelphia, but Atlanta isn't exactly tearing it up either, and he was dominant against them last year. Florida's pitching staff (including bullpen) has been incredible, and leads the league in a stat called Runs Saved Against Average, which measures a staff's ER total to what a league average staff would have allowed in the same amount of innings. It is also park adjusted, and I've found it to be a very good indicator for pitching success. It's still very early in the season, but their RSAA is easily tops in the league.
LA (LIMA) +136 over SF (Rueter) - 1 UNIT - 1:05pm Pacific
I don't think either starting pitcher will figure in the decision here. Rueter pitched great against the Dodgers last year, but this year's Dodger offense seems to be much improved, and Rueter's skill set seems to be plummeting. He's been able to get by with horrible command ratios, but I think it will finally catch up to him this year. I'll strongly consider betting against him all season if the value is there. I'll take the Dodgers based on the strength of their bullpen and Rueter's declining skills.
ARI (WEBB) -112 over SD (Valdez) - 1 UNIT - 7:05pm Pacific
This is another case of a starting pitching mismatch, with Webb clearly being superior to Valdez. Although there have been a lot runs being scored at Petco to begin the season, it still projects as a pitcher's park, and Webb should have a good time there. The only thing that worries me is Arizona's horrendous bullpen, which has an ERA around 9.00 right now, and that's the reason why I'm not making this one a 2 unit play.
UNDER 8.5 NYY (MUSSINA)/BOS (SCHILLING) -130 - 10:20am Pacific
Mussina has pitched brilliantly against Boston, and his career numbers against their current hitters is excellent. He's been roughed up early this year, but he got #200 behind him, so hopefully he'll buckle down now. Schilling has been dominant so far, with 17Ks and 1 BB in two starts. Looks like a great matchup.
OVER 9.5 KC (APPIER)/MIN (LOHSE) -114 - 4:10pm Pacific
Appier will be making his first start of the year. He pitched in a minor league game earlier in the week and couldn't get clocked over 85mph. He'll probably be on a pitch count, which means we'll see the questionable KC bullpen early. Lohse has given up 5 ER in each of his starts, and this is a tough matchup for him.
PLEASE NOTE: All wagers are recommended for a "base" unit. Thus a side for 1 UNIT at -110 should be considered risking 1.10 UNITS to win 1.00 UNITS, while a team at +110 should be considered risking 1.00 UNITS to win 1.10 UNITS.
Good luck,
Edward (Sales & Marketing)

MLB BASEBALL
White Sox @ Tampa Bay
Pick: Tampa Bay -110
Time: 6:15 PM EST
Today the National Sports Advisors look for Tampa Bay to defeat the White Sox as -110 favorites, when they matchup today in Florida.
Victor Zambrano is still a little wild. Only now he's effectively wild. The Tampa Bay right-hander will try to post his fourth win in as many starts when the Devil Rays resume a three-game series with the visiting Chicago White Sox.
Zambrano showed flashes of brilliance last year, going 12-10 with a 4.21 ERA. However, he had problems with his control, walking 106 in 188 1-3 innings. So far this season, not much has changed.
Zambrano has issued 10 walks in 17 2-3 innings, but his 3-0 record has helped pacify manager Lou Piniella, who normally boils over in frustration over bases on balls.
The Devil Rays took the series opener 3-0 behind seven strong innings from right-hander Paul Abbott. Carl Crawford and Julio Lugo homered for Tampa Bay, which got its first win from a starter other than Zambrano.
Chicago had a three-game winning streak snapped, and missed out on its first 7-3 start since 1991.

MLB BASEBALL
Yankees @ Boston
Pick: UNDER 8.5
Time: 1:20 PM EST
Today the Vegas Sports Insiders look for the Yankees and Red Sox to score under 8.5 runs, when they matchup today in Boston.
Curt Schilling has been waiting for this start since he was traded to Boston in late November.
The hard-throwing right-hander will get his first taste of the bitter rivalry between the Red Sox and New York Yankees when the teams continue a four-game series at Fenway Park.
Schilling, who was sought by the Yankees as well, wound up in Boston after the Red Sox sent pitchers Casey Fossum and Brandon Lyon to the Diamondbacks along with minor leaguer Jorge De La Rosa and a prospect to be named.
Schilling, originally signed by Boston out of high school, immediately pointed to the rivalry as one of the main factors in giving his wholehearted approval to the deal.
The Red Sox, ousted in seven games by the Yankees during last year's memorable AL championship series, got in the first blow this season, beating New York 6-2 behind seven strong innings from knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.
Manny Ramirez, Doug Mirabelli and Bill Mueller homered for Boston, which lost Game 7 of last year's ALCS when Wakefield surrendered an 11th-inning homer to Aaron Boone.
Jorge Posada homered for the Yankees, who edged the Red Sox 10-9 during last year's regular-season series.
