                        NBA Basketball
3 Units on Portland Trail Blazers -3 -110
Memphis is 11-3 SU in their last 14 but most of the wins were against non-playoff caliber teams and this is an awful lot of respect to give them at Portland. Two nights ago "The Animal" used Memphis as a 3-point underdog at San Antonio without Tim Duncan and although they won outright, it was a struggle at best. Portland ran out of gas on Saturday night in Dallas playing their 4th consecutive road game and against one of the premier home teams in the league. The Blazers are 7-0 ATS this year after a blowout defeat of 15 points or more. Portland is also 7-1 ATS since acquiring Abdur-Rahim and Ratliffe from Atlanta and we've used them several times with success. Portland is 4-1 SU at the Rose Garden with the Grizzlies the past three seasons and all four wins have been by six points or more. Memphis was out-rebounded 58-38 two nights ago in San Antonio without Duncan in the lineup. Traditionally Portland is one of the better rebounding teams in the league so I don't expect many 2nd-chance opportunities for the Grizzlies tonight. A 13-16 team on the road against an 18-10 squad at home at a very cheap price.

                        4 Units on Milwaukee Bucks O 211½ -110
231 points were scored the last time Orlando and Milwaukee tangled in Wisconsin on February 17th. The Bucks are 16-3 'OVER' the total in their last 19. Meanwhile Orlando comes off a game in which they allowed Boston 117 points. The Bucks have scored 102 or more in six consecutive games while allowing 104 or more in their last four contests. The Magic are 7-1 'OVER' against Central Division opponents this year. Milwaukee is 20-8 'OVER' this season when they are a listed favorite. The Bucks are 7-1 'OVER' this year if they allowed 100 or more points in two or more consecutive games. I've made a tidy sum playing Milwaukee games 'OVER' and especially since the acquisition of Keith Van Horn for Tim Thomas. Obviously I prefer the Bucks 'OVER' at home (11 straight), but neither of these teams play a shred of defense and I can't resist this temptation once again. On Sunday the Miami/Milwaukee score was 17-13 Heat with less than three minutes to go in the first quarter. Despite that bad start, 212 points were scored with a posted total of 193 ½. These are also two teams that love to shoot the 3-pointer and don't defend it well. Let's strike again with the Bucks 'OVER' the total.

                        NCAA Basketball
                        5 Units on Vanderbilt -12 -110
A great spot for Vanderbilt tonight as the Commodores and Nashville fans honor senior forward Matt Freije and senior guard Scott Hundley in their final appearance at Memorial Gymnasium. Vandy is coming off a loss (2nd in 16 home games) to Mississippi State and should be eager to atone for a 10-point loss in Knoxville and a five-point setback on this floor last March 8th. Vanderbilt is averaging 77 points a game at home with a stifling defense yielding just 60 per. Tennessee has consistently proven all season they are pathetic on the SEC highway. The Volunteers enter Nashville with a 1-8 road record and a defense allowing a whopping 82 points per game. The Vols are 0-7 ATS in road SEC games this year getting outscored (ready for this) 85-62 on average! The last time they covered a conference road game? You guessed it right here last March. Since then 0-8 ATS on the SEC road counting a regular-season loss a year ago at Auburn. They have lost all seven league road games this year by 11 points or more and have been non-competitive in most of them. Three of their last six SEC road opponents have connected on 60.4 percent or better of their field goal tries. That is just frightening defense on the road and something we will certainly remember for the upcoming SEC Tournament. Vanderbilt in a big way as the 'Dores go to 15-5 ATS since '97 after an upset loss as a favorite and 8-1 ATS after a defeat by six points or less the last three years. The defeat to Mississippi State, senior night, and facing a state rival with double revenge should be plenty of ammunition tonight for the Commodores.

                        3 Units on Temple -13 -110
Temple beat Massachusetts at the Apollo by 42 here last February. The Minutemen got their revenge when they knocked off the Owls at home 66-65 when they miraculously converted 55.8 percent of their field goals. That was very surprising considering UMASS is a dreadful shooting team hitting barely over 43 percent on the season and 40.1 percent on the road. Coach Chaney will always have an axe to grind with the Minutemen regardless of the coach and that feeling is reflected in recent home results. A win by 42 last year, 17 in 2002, 11 in 2001. The last road game for the Minutemen resulted in a 14-point loss to Fordham. I personally don't know which is harder to accomplish? Lose by 14 to the Rams or allow Fordham 75 points in the process. Temple went to Fordham and won by 10 so I suppose we have a 24-point differential. You could also examine recent results against Rhode Island. The Owls blistered RI by 16 on the highway while UMASS lost to the Rams by seven at home. That's hardly a glowing endorsement for Minutemen basketball either. I can only tell you this. Temple looked like doggy-do-do early in the season, yet are now 14-11 with two home games left followed by the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. Stranger things have happened and this is Big Five territory. Temple is 7-1 SU since February 4th and has obviously resurrected their season. I find it doubtful that UMASS can compete here tonight. The Minutemen were counting down the seconds to their season-ending execution (0-5 SU and ATS run) until the Governor called in a reprieve in the name of St. Bonaventure this past Saturday. But it's back to death row tonight.

                        4 Units on St Louis +3½ -110
It surprised me to discover that St. Louis is actually 6-0 SU and ATS at home against Louisville at home since 1997. The fact the Cardinals are favored tonight is based on reputation rather than reality. Louisville has been burning money quicker than a miserable six-deck blackjack shoe I caught at the Venetian during Super Bowl week back in January. Scoring at home (who isn't), the Cardinals are on a 3-10-1 ATS Slide since January 15th. It's hard not to forget that memorable 71-46 loss at TCU when they were obviously disinterested with Cincinnati on deck. They are 2-6 SU in their last eight games. St. Louis is no slouch at home with an 11-2 record and a stifling defense yielding just 52.1 points per game. The Billikens have been playing well of late going 4-1 SU in their last five and let's face facts tonight. They have 15 wins and a victory against Louisville couldn't hurt especially with doormat Houston on deck. It's hard to believe the way these two programs started the season but both Louisville and St. Louis are each 8-6 in conference play. I'll take the home team to stage the upset. St. Louis is 13-4 ATS as a home puppy of six points or less since '97 and 9-1 ATS off a league win of 10 points or more the last three years. Meanwhile "The Ville" is just 8-20 ATS after a win by six points or less since '97. Curiously St. Louis is also 8-1 ATS at home the last three years against teams that average 21 or more three-point attempts per game. They have held those opponents to just 55 points a game. We often speak about defensive dogs in football. St. Louis would certainly quality in the same category tonight on the hardwoods.
