TROY, Ala. (AP) Kaleb Barker connected with receiver Kaylon Geiger for two touchdowns and Troy beat in-state rival South Alabama 37-13 on Wednesday night in the Battle for the Belt.

Will Sunderland made it 30-13 with an easy interception, returning it 27 yards early in the fourth quarter for Troy's second interception. Freshman Trevon Woolfolk sealed it on a 4-yard run for his first career touchdown.

Barker, who left the game at Missouri in the second quarter after a late hit, threw for 194 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Troy (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt). He entered ranked ninth in the nation averaging 295.2 passing yards. Geiger caught four passes for 29 yards and DK Billingsley rushed for 100 yards.

Troy has held its last four opponents to a combined 22 points in the second half.

South Alabama (1-6, 0-3), which has lost its last five games, faces No. 24 Appalachian State next weekend. Cephus Johnson had 183 yards passing with two interceptions. Tra Minter rushed for 86 yards.

Thursday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) First off today, a little news…….at some point soon, probably early next week but maybe as early as tomorrow, I‘m going to be going off the grid for a week or so.

Turns out I have a detached retina in my right eye, and I’m going to have surgery to get it fixed. The doctor basically told me I have to lay on the couch and DO NOTHING for a week after the operation until the eye heals, so I’ll be on the shelf for a little while, but hopefully I’ll be back for the start of college basketball season.

12) Wound up in four different doctors’ offices Wednesday; not good- the last one was a pre-exam for the operation where they give you an EKG and test your urine (for what, I have no idea, but mine passed)

Two thoughts here…….
— Peeing in a little plastic cup is an underrated skill (seriously, tough to do it well)
— My EKG, to quote the doctor, was “Perfect” so I have that going for me.

11) NFL stuff:
— Michell Trubisky is expected to be back at QB for the Bears this week.
— Titans are starting Ryan Tannehill at QB this week against the Chargers.
— Steelers are going back to Mason Rudolph at QB for this week’s game.

10) Titans’ deposed starting QB Marcus Mariota is now 26-35-2 ATS as an NFL starter.

9) Win for me; flew home during a Presidential debate, so I missed it. Also missed couple of playoff games, but followed along on Twitter on the airplane. Politicians? Not so much.

8) 22-year NBA veteran Vince Carter holds the league record with 245 different teammates; four of his current Atlanta teammates weren’t even alive when Carter made his NBA debut in 1998.

7) In the second half of their last two games, Kansas City has run only 35 plays; their opponents have run 79 plays, and that is a problem. Chiefs will be missing five starters in Denver tonight.

6) Was reading an article about a bookmaker who said the biggest thing most books need is volume, because no matter what, books generally pocket around $6 for every $100 wagered.

5) St Louis Cardinals had a rough week in the NLCS, but their pitching coach Mike Maddox got two hole-in-ones in the same round last week in Washington. That doesn’t happen very much.

4) Under Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys are 35-17-1 ATS in the 2nd half of games when the Cowboys are behind at the half. Pete Carroll, Bill O’Brien are #2, #3 on that list.

3) Redskins’ QB Alex Smith broke his leg LY but still hopes to play in the NFL again; since he broke the leg, Smith has had 17 surgeries on it. Seventeen.

2) FWIW, thru six weeks of play, Arizona Cardinals have allowed the most fantasy points to tight ends. Fantasy owners who have the Giants’ Evan Engram should enjoy that.

1) Angels signed Joe Maddon to a 3-year contract as manager; Maddon spent his first 31 years in pro baseball working in the Angels’ organization.

• Week 8 Upset Alerts
October 16, 2019
By Matt Blunt

It was a solid week of selections last week, as the overall record was 2-1 ATS given the lines posted at the time, but considering Florida started and ended the week at +14, I'm sure some of you that followed along were able to get a push with the Gators.

The best (and most surprising) result of the bunch was Bowling Green's outright win over Toledo in a game the Falcons never trailed in. Even for as much as I liked Bowling Green in that spot – and hated Toledo – I did not expect to see an outright upset as near 30-point underdogs for Bowling Green. But who knows, maybe they read my “dog crap” comment and wanted to prove me wrong. If that's the case, I'd love to see this piece get shared with all my +20 programs each week with the hope of cashing a few more tickets.

Florida's 14-point loss is officially graded as a loss, but it's not like the Gators didn't have plenty of opportunities to get inside that margin in the 4th quarter. There was an INT in the end zone as well as a failed scoring drive to end the game from the Gators, as poor execution late cost them that ATS win.

Arkansas was the other winner on last week's card, as the Razorbacks are now 2-0 ATS when they show up in this piece. Given that their line moved all the way down to +3.5 by kickoff, we clearly got the best of the number, and the +7 result was never really in danger of falling short.

It's on to this week's card though, and while the Arkansas Razorbacks were a strong consideration once again – home underdogs in the +10-19 range against an Auburn team with LSU on deck – I'm not going to push my luck with them there. Auburn is coming off a bye themselves, and that's basically what kept Arkansas off the card this week, but they are another underdog I would strongly consider.

Let's get to this week's selections:

Upset Alert #1: Underdogs in the +1 to + 9 range
YTD: 1-6 SU; 5-2 ATS

Maryland (+6) vs Indiana

Maryland's offense was the talk of college football through two weeks, as they started the year by putting up 79 and 63 points in their first two games – both easy wins. But it's all been downhill from there for a Terrapins team that's been hit with injuries at the same time as well, and last week's 40-14 loss as 4-point road chalk was a low point. The market saw that result and rushed to the window to fade Maryland this week as they host Indiana, because overreactions to one week is always going to be a thing in this industry.

That loss was a bad one for Maryland no doubt, but I actually view it as a good thing in terms of backing them this week because their stock is rather low. This line opened up at Indiana -3.5, and now sits at -6 because nobody wants anything to do with the Terrapins after that game. But if there ever was a great spot to bounce back and put their best foot forward, this would be it for Maryland, as they know that loss was highly embarrassing, and the fact that they were shutout on their home field the last time they played there (59-0 vs Penn State) only adds to the desire to have a strong performance this week. Indiana is nothing special on either side of the ball, but final scores for the Hoosiers to skew that.

Broad picture stats for Indiana will show that defensively they aren't all that bad with two shutout wins on the year, with another one coming after allowing just 3 points. But those goose eggs came against FCS Eastern Illinois and FBS (that should be in FCS) Rutgers. The 3 points allowed came against Connecticut – another team that is FCS caliber – and that's about as soft as soft gets in terms of schedule.

However, Indiana got lit up by Ohio State (as everyone has) in a 51-10 loss, but even the anaemic Michigan State offense managed to put 40 points up on the board against the Hoosiers. Any half-decent foe can move the ball up and down on this team, and even amid recent struggles, Maryland's more then capable of doing the same.

Finally, while I do understand the desire to fade Maryland after such a poor performance last week, I don't understand the idea of getting behind Indiana as a road favorite to do it.

Since late-October of 2017, this Indiana Hoosiers football program is a perfect 0-6 ATS as road favorites of any number, and as luck would have it, that run started with a road game IN Maryland laying -6.5. The Terrapins ended up winning that game 42-39 and this game has great potential to repeat that result.

Upset Alert #2: Underdogs in the +10 to +19 range
YTD: 1-6 SU; 1-6 ATS

New Mexico (+19.5) vs Wyoming

There are much better teams than New Mexico that could have found residence in this spot, but the Lobos should be able to hang tough here against a Wyoming team that's still highly overrated in my view.

Make no mistake about it, New Mexico is not a very good football team themselves, but their ability to run the ball and shorten games with that strategy does make them a nice team to fill this role. Outside of getting spanked by Notre Dame (66-14), they haven't lost a game by more than 14 points this year, and they've put up at least 10 points offensively in all six of their contests.

That latter point is important because Wyoming has only scored more than 23 points once in their last five games, and chances are they'll need much more than that to cover a number that's approaching -20. Wyoming is one of the slower paced teams as it is out there this season, so them shortening the game on themselves hurts their ATS chances, and with a defense that's allowed at least 14 points against in every one of their six games this year, to back Wyoming you've got to figure that the Cowboys will to score somewhere near 40 to have a shot at this cover. I just don't see that happening against a ball-control team like the Lobos, pending numerous turnovers that put them behind multiple scores early.

And while the rebuttal from Wyoming backers will always be the scores in this game from the past two seasons – Wyoming won 31-3 and 42-3 – I just don't think the 2019 version of Wyoming is anywhere near as good as those squads, nor is the 2019 version of New Mexico as bad as they were. Wyoming also closed as -7 or less in both of those games, and winning by a big margin and being expected to win by a big margin are two very different things.

I don't believe New Mexico will end up with a shot at the outright victory, but keeping it within two TD's is something I expect to see from the Lobos throughout this entire game.

Upset Alert #3: Underdogs in the +20 and above range
YTD: 2-5 ATS

Nevada (+21) vs Utah State

Not entirely sure what Utah State has done to deserve this kind of lofty respect for this game, other than their two losses this year (Wake Forest, LSU) have come against quality foes. But a number like this is selling a Nevada team awfully short. Utah State is coming off a bye week so the extra time to prepare does play into shading the number their way here, but at -20+, that shade has turned into a solar eclipse.

Defensively, Nevada has some issues to work out the rest of the year as they've given up 92 points in their past two games alone, and already saw Oregon hang 77 on them earlier in the year. But Nevada is still 1-1 SU in those most recent two games, and like other big underdogs on the card this week, will look to win the ball control aspect of the game and live with the results from there. Utah State's already been favored by 20 or more once this year against FBS competition, and that ended up as just a 10-point home win over Colorado State at the end of September. This game has all the makings of a similar result.

• UCLA at Stanford
October 15, 2019
By Joe Nelson

The Pac-12 was in the spotlight Friday night last week and will have the Thursday night showcase game to start a huge mid-October college football weekend with 61 FBS games Wednesday to Saturday. UCLA and Stanford aren’t where they expected to be at this point in the season and both squads are in a need of a win to improve its chances at the postseason. Here is a look at the Thursday ESPN game in a Pac-12 crossover contest.

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal
Venue: Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California
Time/TV: Thursday, October 7, 9:00 p.m. ET ESPN
Line: Stanford -7, Over/Under 52½
Last Meeting: 2018 Stanford (-7) 49, at UCLA 42

When the Thursday night schedule was set, this mid-October Pac-12 contest looked like one of the more appealing Thursday night games of the season with high profile programs and coaches in a matchup of potential conference title threats. The season hasn’t unfolded that way for UCLA or Stanford as this week’s game will feel like more like a postseason elimination game.

UCLA’s bowl hopes are certainly miniscule with a 1-5 start in Chip Kelly’s second season with the Bruins as few coaches have experienced a collapse like Kelly has in recent years. A star at Oregon, Kelly won the NFC East in his first season as a NFL head coach before some questionable roster decisions led to his departure and he had one terrible year in San Francisco as well. Back in the college game and back in the Pac-12, Kelly is 4-14 at UCLA and on a 12-37 run since 2015 in his three different coaching jobs.

He signed a five-year contract ahead of the 2018 season and school would owe him roughly $9 million should they move on from Kelly before January 15, 2022 as the Bruins are likely stuck with Kelly for better or worse after making a very favorable contract offer for him while competing with Florida among others for his services.

Allowing 131 points in three Pac-12 games is concerning, but the Bruins have scored 115 points and three of five losses have come by 10 or fewer points. The remaining schedule doesn’t offer great prospects but the best chances for wins are likely the next three weeks with this trip to Stanford before home games with Arizona State and Colorado. At this point matching last season’s 3-9 record would probably be considered a minor success and the good news is that next season’s schedule is much easier with no power five non-conference games while like this season, avoiding Oregon and Washington in the conference slate.

One of UCLA’s top receivers the past two seasons, Theo Howard, just announced he will redshirt and transfer for another negative headline but the production in the passing game has been adequate, though inflated from playing from behind often. Dorian-Thompson-Robinson has struggled with his accuracy at quarterback completing just 56 percent of his passes with six interceptions but the rushing game support has been limited with UCLA posting 857 yards on the ground over six games on just 3.7 yards per carry.

Stanford actually sits in second place in the Pac-12 North at 2-2, but having already lost to Oregon hopes for a run to the top are remote. The Cardinal needs three more wins to return to a bowl game, having made the postseason in all eight seasons under David Shaw. Certainly a coach that would have been given an opportunity at a higher profile program or the NFL had he shown the inclination, Shaw is 85-29 at Stanford including 57-18 in Pac-12 games with three conference titles and two Rose Bowl wins. The last championship came in 2015 and after winning 10 or more games in five of his first six seasons, this will be a third straight season without reaching that mark and likely Shaw’s worst season with the low mark 8-5 in 2014.

Stanford has played without longtime quarterback K.J. Costello in three games this season and he is expected to remain out of action with a hand injury this week. Backup Davis Mills struggled in the loss at USC starting ahead of Costello but he has played well the past two games in wins, including the upset over Washington. He injured his calf and remains very much questionable to play Thursday night. Sophomore Jack West could make his first start and he has seen the practice reps this week while also playing extensively as a primary quarterback in spring ball but his actual game experience is very limited, taking only a few token snaps the past two seasons.

Stanford has also been hurt by a marginal rushing attack as well Cameron Scarlett has posted 564 rushing yards he is doing so on 4.4 yards per rush and Stanford has posted just 3.8 yards per rush as a team. The Cardinal also lacks the big athletic receiving corps they had last season led by J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, who is now playing with the Eagles.

Many of the toughest games for Stanford are behind them with four of the final six at home and USC, Oregon, and Washington already out of the way. The Cardinal drew a difficult non-conference schedule with Northwestern and UCF and September and will close the season facing Notre Dame in late November. Winning there of the next four ahead of that game in Pac-12 play is possible, but not a given as Stanford’s bowl probability could hinge this game.

Last Season:
Stanford’s game at UCLA last season was supposed to be the final game of the regular season, but the previous week’s game with rival California had to be postponed due to the nearby fires. After that unexpected off week, Stanford won 49-42 at the Rose Bowl despite being out-gained 528-470. UCLA led 3-0 early but didn’t take the lead again until a fourth quarter score made it 42-41 with the Bruins scoring 15 consecutive points with a safety, a kickoff return, and a 90-yard drive, though with a missed two-point conversion.

Stanford would hit a 52-yard pass about a minute later and got the two-point conversion to go up by seven (and even with the closing spread) and UCLA had three late drives ending in a missed field goal, a failed 4th-and-15 from the Stanford 24, and a failed 4th-and-8 across midfield. Wilton Speight was the UCLA quarterback for the game with 466 passing yards but no touchdowns while Costello had five for Stanford. It was the season finale for UCLA and followed up the win over USC the previous week in what wound up being a 1-4 run to close the season despite a few very competitive games.

Series History:
Stanford is 11-0 S/U & 9-1-1 ATS in this series since 2009 as Shaw has not lost to the Bruins. Stanford won 58-34 as 6½-point favorite in the last home meeting in 2017. Going back to 1980, Stanford is on a 12-8 ATS run at home in this series while on a 16-9-1 ATS run as a favorite with most of those instances in recent years as Stanford was favored just twice from 1980 to 2007 before being favored in all but one meeting since 2008 in this series. These coaches split two meetings while Kelly was at Oregon with the road team winning both games including Stanford winning as a +19 underdog in 2012 vs. an undefeated #2 ranked Ducks team led by Marcus Mariota.

Historical Trends:
UCLA is on a 3-17 S/U run in road games since 2016 with an 8-12 ATS record. Since 2008, UCLA is 18-27 ATS as a road underdog. Under Shaw, Stanford is 46-9 S/U and 32-23 ATS at home though with slightly lesser numbers as a home favorite at 27-22 ATS with just a 11-10 ATS record in that role since 2016.

• Stanford seeks another win vs. UCLA
October 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) After a sluggish stretch in September, Stanford looks to be rounding into form just in time for a matchup against the Cardinal's favorite opponent in recent years.

Stanford has shaken off a three-game losing streak to win back-to-back games, including a victory over then-No. 15 ranked Washington, leading into Thursday night's game against UCLA. The Cardinal (3-3, 2-2 Pac-12) have won 11 straight games in the series against the rival Bruins (1-5, 1-2).

''Winning last week was very big for our confidence and building momentum,'' linebacker Gabe Reid said of the 23-13 win over Washington on Oct. 5. ''We pride ourselves in how we play and felt like maybe the first quarter of the season didn't really reflect our true potential. We're looking forward to proving what a great defensive team we are.''

Little went right for Stanford during a stretch of three straight double-digit losses in September to Southern California, Central Florida and Oregon as injuries on the offensive line and at quarterback hampered the offense.

But little has gone wrong for the Cardinal the past decade against the Bruins. They have won every meeting since 2009, with only one of those games decided by fewer than seven points. UCLA had never lost more than seven straight to any opponent before this skid started.

''It's irrelevant to this game,'' Bruins coach Chip Kelly said. ''The game four years ago shouldn't matter in this game. It can't be a psychological factor if no one talks about it.''

Here are some things to watch:

SIGNAL CALLER PART I

Kelly didn't announce a starting quarterback for this game with Dorian Thompson-Robinson working his way back from an ankle injury suffered Sept. 28 against Arizona. Thompson-Robinson was replaced in the lineup by Austin Burton the following week in a 48-31 loss to Oregon State but has been back at practice leading up to the game against Stanford. Thompson-Robinson has 11 TD passes and has run for two more scores this season.

SIGNAL CALLER PART II

The Cardinal also are dealing with injuries at quarterback with starter K.J. Costello out once again with a thumb injury and backup Davis Mills is out with a calf injury. That clears the way for Jack West to get his first start. West is 1 for 5 for 4 yards during three career games for Stanford.

''Jack West can do everything in this offense,'' coach David Shaw said. ''If he has to play against UCLA, he'll go out there and play well.''

BANGED-UP LINE

Stanford has suffered another injury on the already thin offensive line with Henry Hattis now out for the season. Star left tackle Walker Little was lost to a season-ending injury in the season opener and senior Devery Hamilton is also sidelined but could return later this year. Stanford has only seven offensive linemen and will likely start three freshmen this week with Jake Hornibrook expected to join Walter Rouse and Barrett Miller in the lineup.

''It's been fun to watch,'' Shaw said of the development of the young linemen. ''We thought we were going to watch it happen in practice; we just happen to be watching it during games. Every day is a new learning experience.''

BELL COW BACK

With the problems at quarterback, the Cardinal have relied heavily on senior running back Cameron Scarlett. He is coming off the best game of his career with 33 carries for 151 yards and a TD against Washington. Scarlett leads the Pac-12 with 564 yards rushing on 127 carries and also has 13 catches for 138 yards.

BIG PLAY BACK

One of the bright spots this season for UCLA has been the play of running back Demetric Felton. He had a 75-yard TD run against Oregon State for his school-record fourth score of at least 75 yards this season. He also had a 75-yard TD catch against Cincinnati, a 94-yard TD catch against Washington State and a 100-yard kickoff return for a score against Washington State. Felton had nine catches against the Beavers, tying the school record for a running back, and has 31 receptions overall, five shy of George Farmer's single-season school record set in 1969.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) Raymond Calais and Elijah Mitchell each ran for a pair of touchdowns to help Louisiana-Lafayette beat Arkansas State 37-20 on Thursday night.

Calais and Mitchell each scored in the fourth quarter to help the Ragin' Cajuns (5-2, 2-1 Sun Belt Conference) pull away. Mitchell scored from 1 yard for a 30-20 lead with 6:19 left and Calais added a 38-yard TD run with 3:18 left.

Calais ran eight times for 144 yards and Mitchell ran 23 times for 109 yards.

The Red Wolves (3-4, 1-2) trailed 24-10 at halftime. Blake Grupe kicked a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter and Layne Hatcher threw a 25-yard TD pass to Kirk Merritt to cut the deficit to 24-20 early in the fourth.

Hatcher passed for 303 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Marcel Murray ran for 164 yards on 35 carries and Omar Bayless caught nine passes for 150 yards.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here….

13) Chiefs 30, Broncos 6:
— Costly win; star QB Mahomes left in 2nd quarter with an injured knee.
— Word is that Mahomes dislocated his knee; an MRI will show if there was any ligament damage.
— Chiefs broke game open with a defensive TD when they were leading 13-6.

— Denver’s offense stunk; Troy Aikman seemed annoyed with Joe Flacco’s effort.
— Broncos missed an easy FG, failed on a fake punt; not their best night.
— Denver is 13-26 in its last 39 games.

12) Houston 8, New York 3— Astros grab a 3-1 series lead, with Verlander/Cole in line to pitch the next two games.

11) Chiefs’ backup QB is Matt Moore, who is 15-15 as an NFL starter in his 11 years in the NFL, mostly with the Dolphins. He’s started only five games since 2012.

My lasting memory of Moore was on HBO’s Hard Knocks, when he was talking to then-rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, who said he didn’t know who the other three teams in the AFC East were.

“How can you not know that?!?!” Moore was as incredulous as I was.

10) How would you like to be Gerrit Cole’s agent? Cole hasn’t lost a game since May 22; Astros won his last 16 starts and after the World Series Cole will be a free agent. He earned $13.5M this year, figures to more than double that going forward. 3% (agents’ fee) of $27M is $810,000.

9) Next two years, by the way, Astros are on the hook with Zack Greinke at $35M a year, and Justin Verlander at $33M a year. 3% of $35M is $1.05M.

8) UCLA 34, Stanford 16— Cardinals fall to 3-4; they’re down to their #3 QB and are in danger of their first losing season since 2008.

7) QB Brock Osweiler retired from the NFL this week, with a career record of 15-15 and career earnings of $41,396,679. Being a backup QB is profitable work.

6) In September, state of Pennsylvania took in $194.5M in sports bets, wth $19.3M in revenue, with 81.2% of the bets via online/mobile wagers.

5) Duke’s basketball team is allergic to true road games, but they seem to like Madison Square Garden in NYC:
Nov 5-6: Duke vs. Kansas…….Michigan State vs. Kentucky
Nov 21-22: Duke vs Cal……..Georgetown vs Texas

4) Mets told Brooklyn Cyclones’ manager Edgardo Alfonzo that his contract won’t be renewed, even though he won the New York-Penn League championship this season. Go figure.

3) Atlantic 14, Mountain West will have a challenge series next (2020-21) basketball season, which should help their non-conference schedules; MW recently had the same thing with the MVC. Hopefully some of the games will find their way to TV (CBS College Sports?)

2) Sill trying to process that John Beilein is coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers; would love to know how guys like him, Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens compare coaching NBA with college ball.

1) Personal update; my eye operation will be Wednesday, which means that this site will get its first extended downtime since 2001 for a week or so, starting next week.

WILLIAMS WON'T START

The Miami Hurricanes will start N'Kosi Perry at quarterback for a second consecutive week. Perry gets the call for this weekend's encounter with Georgia Tech with redshirt freshman QB Jarren Williams still recovering from a shoulder injury. Williams, who was hurt Oct. 5 against Virginia Tech, might still appear in the game but won't take the first snap.

Perry was solid if unspectacular in relief last week, completing 16 of 27 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown in an upset win over a stout Virginia defense. Perry has completed 60.7 percent of his attempts with six TDs against just one interception in 2019.

That Perry doesn't represent an offensive downgrade – at least on paper – only galvanizes the notion that Miami is a terrific cover option; the Hurricanes shouldn't miss a beat on offense, while the Yellow Jackets are an absolute mess with the football.

JAMIE'S JUST FINE

Wake Forest bettors and fans should expect to see quarterback Jamie Newman back on the field for Saturday's encounter with Florida State. Newman left late in last week's wild 62-59 victory over Louisville after suffering a reported upper-body injury. But Newman is listed as the starter on this week's depth chart for a weekend showdown with a Seminoles team that was walloped 45-14 by host Clemson last time out.

Newman has been one of the top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference so far this season, leading all quarterbacks in passing yards (1,772) and touchdowns (17). Florida State's pass defense has been a ghastly sight this season, having allowed an average of 290.5 points per game. With Newman at the helm, the Over on Wake Forest's team total is a strong option Saturday.
