Calgary Stampeders (9-4 SU, 5-7-1 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (7-6 SU, 8-5 ATS)

    Point-spread: Calgary -1 ½
    Total: 51 ½

    Game Overview

Calgary returns from its bye week tied with Saskatchewan for first place in the West Division standings. The Stampeders have won their last four games SU with a 2-1-1 record ATS. Back on Aug. 17, they lost to Montreal 40-34 as five-point home favorites. The total went way OVER 49 ½ points in that game, but it has stayed UNDER in three of four games since that loss. Bo Levi Mitchell is a big reason for Calgary’s current winning streak. Overall, he has thrown for 1,732 yards and eight touchdowns in six previous starts.

Saturday’s loss to BC kept Montreal from clinching its first playoff berth since 2014, but it only needs one more win in its last five games to earn a spot in the East. With Vernon Adams Jr. serving a one-game league suspension, Matt Shiltz got the start at quarterback for the Alouettes. He went 10-for-19 for 177 yards. Adams should be back in the lineup this Saturday. He is fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (2,953) with 15 touchdown throws verse eight interceptions.

    Betting Trends

-- Montreal has won four of its last five home games against Calgary SU while covering in all five contests. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of the last 11 matchups in this inter-division clash.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-5 SU, 9-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-4 SU, 8-5 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6
    Total: 47

    Game Overview

Winnipeg slipped out of first place in the West with Friday’s loss. This was its third SU loss in its last four games. This includes a SU home-and-home split against Saskatchewan with each team coming away with a win on its home field. The total stayed UNDER in both contests. The Blue Bombers are still forging on without Matt Nichols under center. In his place, Chris Streveler threw for 304 yards with one touchdown in Friday’s losing cause. He was also picked off twice.

The Roughriders’ only SU loss in their last nine games was on the road to Winnipeg. They have failed to cover in three of their last four games, but they are 6-3 ATS in nine games closing as favorites. Cody Fajardo turned in another strong effort at quarterback in Saturday’s win with 278 yards passing and three touchdown throws against no interceptions. He also ran for 80 yards and a score on 11 carries. Saskatchewan rushed for 147 total yards in that game.

    Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg has a SU 8-4 edge in its last 12 games against the Roughriders and it is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The total has gone OVER in nine of the last 11 meetings in Saskatchewan.

Toronto Argonauts (2-11 SU, 5-6-2 ATS) at British Columbia (4-10 SU, 6-8 ATS)
    Point-spread: BC -9 ½
    Total: 51

    Game Overview

The Argonauts continue to ride out the string with just one SU win in their last six games. They lost to BC 18-17 early in the season as eight-point home underdogs. Toronto is 2-3-1 ATS in six previous road games this season. It is easy to see why this team has only won two games this year. The offense is averaging 19.7 points per game to complement a defense that is ranked last in the league in points allowed (33.0). James Franklin was back under center in Saturday’s loss.

It may be too little, too late, but the Lions have strung together three SU wins. Even after failing to cover against Montreal, they are 5-2 ATS over their last seven outings. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in that latest win and it has now stayed UNDER in BC’s last six contests. Mike Reilly completed 30 of his 34 passing attempts on Saturday for 309 yards and a score. He is currently second in the CFL in total passing yards with 3,615. Reilly has tossed both 15 touchdowns and interceptions this season.

    Betting Trends

-- BC has won 10 of its last 14 home games against Toronto SU, but the Argonauts have a 4-1 edge ATS in the last five meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last eight matchups in this inter-division tilt.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS AT MONTREAL ALOUETTES (+2, 51)

The Stamps are coming off their bye week and are tied for the best record in the West. The Als lost on the road to the Lions in Week 16 but had to play that game without their talented QB Vernon Adams Jr who was serving a one-game suspension.

These teams played each other on August 17 and Montreal pulled off a 40-34 road upset thanks to Adams who scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground while throwing for another two scores. The Stamps have an interesting recent history of struggling this month; they're 0-8 ATS and 2-6 SU over their last eight games in October. They also don't generally play well in Montreal going just 0-5 ATS and 1-4 SU in their previous five games at Molson Stadium.

If the Als win they clinch a playoff spot in the East so they should be extremely motivated to make those trends continue. Take the home dogs.

    PICK: Montreal +2

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (-6, 47)

Two of the best teams in the CFL tangle for the third time this season. The Riders are 6-1 at home, including a 19-17 win over the Bombers in Week 12. However, the Bombers bounced back to throttle the Riders 35-10.

The Bombers coming off back to back losses, while the Riders have won eight of their last nine games and crushed the Argos by 25 points last week.

That said, Saskatchewan has only scored a total of 29 points in two games against Winnipeg this year. And despite the Bombers defense being uncharacteristically exposed the last two weeks they still hold opponents to just 21.4 points per game on the year. Expect Bombers defensive coordinator Richie Hall to make the necessary adjustments for Saturday and take the Riders team total Under 26.

PICK: Team Total - Saskatchewan Under 26.5

TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT BC LIONS (-9, 51)

The Lions have now won three games in a row after beginning the year 1-9. Their only victory through the first ten games of the season came against Toronto on July 6, when they eked out a 18-17 win on a missed field goal (a missed FG that goes through the endzone is a single point in the CFL).

BC's recent success might be a bit of a mirage though. Two of those three victories came against the Ottawa Redblacks who have been the worst team in the league since July and the other win was by just two points at home against an Alouettes side that was playing their backup QB. Laying nine points is just too much for a mediocre team like the Lions. Take the visitors.

    PICK: Toronto +9

        • CFL Betting Notes - Week 18
          David Schwab

Last weekend’s betting action in the CFL started on Friday night with Hamilton rolling over Edmonton 42-12 closing as a seven-point favorite at home.

Saturday’s triple-header of games got underway in Montreal with the Alouettes stunning Calgary 21-17 as three-point underdogs. Saskatchewan went on to beat Winnipeg 21-6 as a 3 ½-point home favorite in a crucial West Division battle and British Columbia kept its playoff hopes alive with a 55-8 pasting of Toronto closing as an 8 ½-point favorite at home.

          Friday, Oct. 11

Ottawa RedBlacks (3-11 SU, 5-9 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-12 SU, 5-7-2 ATS)
          Point-spread: Toronto -2
          Total: 48

          Game Overview

Ottawa comes off a bye in the midst of a straight-up seven-game losing streak that includes a 46-17 loss to Toronto on Sept. 7 as a five-point home underdog. It did manage to cover against Edmonton in a 21-16 Week 16 loss as a seven-point underdog at home. The RedBlacks failed to cover against the spread in their previous five games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven outings. Quarterback Dominique Davis was injured in the recent loss to the Eskimos but he is not listed on the team’s current injury report. Jonathan Jennings actually got the start at QB in that game.

Saturday’s loss was Toronto’s sixth straight-up setback in its last seven games while going 2-3-2 against the spread in that same span. The total went OVER 51 points against BC and it has gone OVER in in six of the Argonauts’ last seven contests. This offense is averaging just 19.9 points per game and Toronto is ranked last in the CFL in average points allowed (35.8). It allowed 48 points in the first three quarters of Saturday’s loss. The offense was held to 126 yards passing and 41 yards running the ball in that game.

          Betting Trends

-- Toronto has a SU 4-1 record against the RedBlacks in the last five meetings overall and it has won 10 of its last 11 home games against its East Division foe. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight meetings.

Saskatchewan (10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (9-5 SU, 5-8-1 ATS)
          Point-spread: Calgary -3
          Total: 47 ½

          Game Overview

The Roughriders moved into sole possession of first place in the West Division with their win over Winnipeg combined with Calgary’s loss. They have now won nine of their last 10 games SU while going 7-3 ATS. They did lose to the Stampeders 37-10 back on July 6 as five-point home favorites. Saskatchewan is 4-2 ATS on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in two of its last three road games. The Stampeders used three key turnovers to get past the Blue Bombers on Saturday. They also got another strong effort from Cody Fajardo at quarterback. He threw for 299 yards and a score while also leading the team in rushing (47 yards).

Saturday’s loss snapped a SU four-game winning streak with Calgary going 2-2-1 ATS in its last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the five outings. The Stampeders are 1-7-1 ATS this season when closing as favorites and they are 2-5 ATS in seven previous home games. Three lost fumbles and an interception did not help the losing cause against Montreal. Bo Levi Mitchell ended that game with 464 yards passing while completing 31 of his 43 passing attempts.

          Betting Trends

-- Calgary is 10-3 SU in its last 13 games against Saskatchewan and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine matchups in this bitter West Division rivalry.

          Point-spread: BC -2 ½
          Total: 45

          Game Overview

BC brings a SU four-game winning streak into this key West Division battle while going 3-1 ATS. He now leads the league in passing with 3,891 total yards and 20 scoring throws.

Edmonton is still in position to claim a crossover playoff spot out of the West, but it has lost five of its last six games SU. The Eskimos have also failed to cover in their last six games as part of a 1-8 record ATS in their last nine games. The total went OVER 47 ½ points in Friday’s loss and it has gone OVER in five of their last seven contests. Logan Kilgore continues to get the call at quarterback and he completed 23-of 32 passing attempts for 233 yards and one score against Hamilton but he was picked off three times.

          Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won six of its last eight games against the Lions both SU and ATS. It has a 4-1 edge ATS in its last five home games against BC. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six meetings at Commonwealth Stadium.

              Friday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

              13) Astros 6, Rays 1— Clock strikes midnight for the Cinderella Rays, who took Houston to the brink in this series, but Astros scored four runs in the first inning and that was that. ALCS will be New York-Houston, which should be very interesting.

              12) Astros’ ace Gerrit Cole had struck out at least one batter in 73 consecutive innings before he didn’t get a strikeout in the third inning last night; not only is that the longest such streak in the majors since 1961, the next highest streak was only 40 (Pedro Martinez, 1999).

              11) Patriots 35, Giants 14— New England scored TD’s on a blocked punt and a fumble return; Giants also scored a TD on a fumble return. Game was 21-14 with 9:00 to play.

Total yardage was 427-213 NE; Giants had 10 first downs, four turnovers (-2).

              10) South Point Casino in Las Vegas has interesting prop bets; what college team scores the first TD of the day, and then which team scores the most points.

              Favorites for first TD:
              7-1: Georgia, Oklahoma, Toledo
              8-1: Indiana, Michigan

Favorite to score the most points Saturday: Louisiana Tech 8-1

              9) Steph Curry scored 40 points in an exhibition game Thursday; Golden State has a much different roster as they open their new arena this fall- no Klay Thompson, Durant is gone, so there will be nights where Curry will have to go off for the Warriors to win.

              8) Villanova/Seton Hall are the favorites to win Big East basketball this winter.

UCLA is picked to finish 8th in the Pac-12, which seems weird to type.

              7) Over last 12 years, unbeaten NFL teams who are an underdog from Week 6 on are 7-6 ATS. 49ers fit that bill Sunday.

              6) Pittsburgh Steelers apparently had a full-contract practice Wednesday, with the team 1-4 and sinking fast; that is unusual in the NFL. Looks like their #3 QB gets his first NFL start against the Chargers Sunday, in a game between two struggling franchises.

              5) Phillies fired manager Gabe Kapler after two mediocre seasons where his players went in the tank on him in September both years. Oddly, the Phillies fired both trainers and their pitching coach, but invited all the other coaches back for next season.

If a new manager doesn’t get to pick his own coaches, that usually signals a bad job.

              4) No idea why, but the last three years, San Jose State’s leading scorer has transferred out of the program all three years, which is why the Spartans are 9-45 in Mountain West games during that time.

Over the last 22 years, San Jose State has never won half its conference games, though they were 17-16 overall in 2010-11. Seems like a school in California should have at least some success.

              3) UL-Monroe 24, Texas State 14— 3-3 WarHawks clinched the win/covered the spread with a TD with 1:46 left; Texas State completed 20-39 passes, but for only 92 yards.

              2) 30 or so years ago, had some problems with my teeth and as a result I gave up Snickers bars, switching to the softer Three Musketeers candy bars.

This week, I had my first Snickers bars since then; they still taste great!!!

              1) One of the best parts of coming to Las Vegas is meeting new people/making new friends, from all over the country. Thursday was a good day/night for that, making new friends from Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia and a few who live here in the desert. Overall, an excellent day.

TORONTO — McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw a pair of touchdowns and S.J. Green racked up 170 receiving yards to lead the Toronto Argonauts past the Ottawa REDBLACKS with a 28-21 home win on Friday night. The Argos snapped a three-game losing streak and improved their record to 3-12 with their victory under new general manager Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons.

Both teams traded field goals in the first quarter before a pair of touchdown drives put Toronto on top in the second quarter. The REDBLACKS recovered a surprise onside kick to start the second half, and they cut into the lead with Will Arndt’s first career touchdown pass.

The Argos answered back when an amazing 42-yard catch from Green set up Bethel-Thompson’s second touchdown connection to Armanti Edwards. Toronto further extended the lead with another field goal, but a late touchdown pass from Arndt to Dominique Rhymes made it a 10-point game with under three minutes to play.

Ottawa recovered another onside kick to set up a 50-yard field goal from Lewis Ward, but Tobi Antigha’s second interception of the game sealed the victory for Toronto.

Green reached a major CFL milestone by surpassing 10,000 receiving yards, and he also recorded his 700th career reception. The 34-year-old receiver gained 107 yards in the first half and finished with 170 yards on 10 catches.

James Wilder Jr. gained 82 rushing yards on 15 carries.

The REDBLACKS took an early lead on their opening drive with a 47-yard field goal from Ward. Receiver R.J. Harris had the biggest play of the drive with a 14-yard catch-and-run that brought the ball across midfield.

Toronto’s offence responded by moving the ball into Ottawa territory. The Argos were on their way to adding points until REDBLACKS linebacker Kevin Brown stripped the ball from fullback Declan Cross. Defensive back Corey Tindal recovered the fumble for Ottawa to shut down the promising drive.

But the Argos prevented Ottawa from converting the turnover into points, and they added a field goal of their own on their next drive. Green gained 40 yards on a pair of catches to help set up a 19-yard field goal from Tyler Crapigna, making it a tie game entering the second quarter.

Toronto came up with a turnover on the final play of the opening quarter when defensive back Trumaine Washington picked off an errant throw from Arndt.

A costly defensive pass interference penalty called against Ottawa placed the ball at the one-yard line later in the quarter. Green drew the penalty while being covered in the end zone by defensive back Sherrod Baltimore, and the penalty led to a rushing touchdown from James Franklin on a quarterback sneak. Crapigna added the extra point to give the Argos a 10-3 lead.

After forcing another punt on defence, the Argos proceeded to move the ball down the field on their best drive of the opening half. Bethel-Thompson got the drive going with a big completion to Green for 19 yards, and Wilder followed it up by moving the chains on a tough 13-yard run.

Bethel-Thompson capped off the eight-play, 72-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown strike to Edwards in the back of the end zone, and Crapigna kicked the extra point to put Toronto up 17-3 entering half-time.

The REDBLACKS recovered a surprise onside kick to start the second half, catching the Argos off guard. Arndt followed it up with a 14-yard pass to Harris and a 14-yard pass to Brad Sinopoli.

Running back Brendan Gillanders moved the ball further into Toronto territory by cutting through the defence on an 18-yard catch-and-run, and Arndt finished the drive off with an eight-yard touchdown toss to Harris. Ward booted the convert to make it a seven-point game.

Green came up with an amazing grab on the ensuing Argos drive, diving and stretching out to make his 700th career catch on a 42-yard bomb from Bethel-Thompson. Bethel-Thompson followed the big gain up with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Edwards on the next play, and Crapigna added the convert to put Toronto up 24-10 with under ten minutes to go in the third quarter.

Toronto recorded its second turnover of the game when Antigha read Arndt’s eyes and picked off the young quarterback. Antigha rumbled down the field for 45 yards before being tackled by Arndt, and the turnover led to a 33-yard field goal from Crapigna.

Brown came up with another turnover for Ottawa when he picked off Bethel-Thompson in the end zone early in the fourth quarter, but the REDBLACKS’ offence was unable to get anything going after the pick.

The REDBLACKS added a single point to their total when Ward missed a 47-yard field goal wide to the right, but the Argos added a single when a dead ball was declared after a 51-yard punt from Ronnie Pfeffer.

Ottawa made things interesting with a late scoring drive that saw Arndt throw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Rhymes. The REDBLACKS then recovered their second onside kick to set up a 50-yard field goal from Ward, making it a 28-21 game with under two minutes remaining.

Week 19 will see the Toronto Argonauts travel to take on the Montreal Alouettes next Friday at 7:00 p.m. EDT., while the Ottawa REDBLACKS will face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the road the following Saturday at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

STAMPS EDGE RIDERS TO GRAB TOP SPOT IN WEST
                    CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 298 yards and two touchdown passes to help lift the Calgary Stampeders over the Saskatchewan Roughriders with a 30-28 home win on Friday night. The Stamps improved their record to 10-5, matching the Riders in the battle to finish first in the West.

A field goal and a fumble recovery touchdown on a kickoff gave Calgary an early lead, but the Riders responded on defence later in the first quarter with a pick-six from Nick Marshall.

Saskatchewan took the lead in the second quarter after Cody Fajardo led an 84-yard touchdown drive, but the Stamps quickly regained the lead with a touchdown drive of their own that saw Bo Levi Mitchell find Hergy Mayala in the end zone. Fajardo led the Riders to a field goal just before half-time, cutting Calgary’s lead down to just two points.

The Stamps extended their lead in the third quarter with Mitchell’s second touchdown pass to Mayala, but Saskatchewan made it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard field goal from Lauther.

The Riders made it a two-point game with under three minutes to play after Fajardo threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to William Powell, but Mayala helped seal the victory with a late first down gain.

The Riders got on the board first when a booming 55-yard punt from Jon Ryan went out of the end zone for a single point, but the Stamps responded on the following drive with a 47-yard field goal from Rene Paredes. Mitchell helped set up the field goal by moving the chains with three straight completions to three different receivers.

Calgary’s ensuing kickoff was fumbled on the return by Marcus Thigpen, and Jamari Gilbert recovered the ball for Calgary before returning the fumble 28 yards for a touchdown. Paredes added the extra point to give the Stamps an early nine-point lead.

But Saskatchewan stepped up on defence to cut into the lead later in the quarter, as Marshall quickly shut down a Stamps drive by picking off Mitchell and returning it all the way to the end zone for a 62-yard touchdown. Lauther added the extra point to make it a 10-8 game.

Paredes made a 45-yard field goal to extend Calgary’s lead to five points entering the second quarter.

After both defences forced punts, Fajardo proceeded to lead the Riders on their best drive of the opening half. The 27-year-old quarterback engineered a 15-play, 84-yard scoring drive that consumed nine minutes off the clock. Fajardo completed six passes on the drive to help set up a three-yard rushing touchdown from Powell that gave Saskatchewan the lead.

But the Stamps swung back and regained the lead with a scoring drive of their own. Mitchell connected with receiver Eric Rogers for a 17-yard gain before following it up two plays later with an eight-yard touchdown strike to Mayala. Paredes’ extra point gave Calgary a 20-15 lead with under three minutes to go in the half.

Royce Metchie notched an interception for Calgary to put an end to the Riders’ next drive, but Saskatchewan forced a punt and rallied to add a 12-yard field goal from Lauther to finish the half.

Calgary extended its lead in the third quarter with another touchdown connection between Mitchell and Mayala. Mayala hauled in the 18-yard score after Ante Milanovic-Litre brought the ball into scoring range with 25 rushing yards on a pair of carries. Paredes added the extra point to put Calgary up 27-18.

Saskatchewan pulled within a touchdown in the fourth quarter after Lauther made a 42-yard field goal, but Calgary extended the lead once again by matching the Riders with a 42-yard field goal from Paredes.

Fajardo brought the Riders closer with a 34-yard touchdown strike to Powell,

Week 19 will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders travel to take on the BC Lions next Friday at 10:00 p.m. EDT., while the Calgary Stampeders will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the following Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

                        13) Nationals 2, Cardinals 0— St Louis scored ten runs in the top of the first inning Wednesday, then they came home and got one hit here.

Anibal Sanchez is the first pitcher EVER to throw 6+ innings and allow one or no hits in two playoff games.

Mike Muchlinski was the home plate ump here; he umped Max Scherzer’s no-hitter in 2015 and also a 2013 game when Sanchez struck out 17 batters.

                        12) Oregon 45, Colorado 3— Ducks allowed total of 22 points in winning their last four games against I-A opponents. Colorado went in the tank in the second half here.

                        11) In six games this season, New England opponents have only had four drives (out of 72) where they ran a play in the Patriots’ red zone. New England’s offense has 25 such drives.

                        10) Steelers’ QB Mason Rudolph is officially out Sunday with a concussion, meaning Devlin Hodges will get his first NFL start; Paxton Lynch was promoted from the practice squad to be the backup QB.

Rams’ CB Aqib Talib (ribs) is out Sunday; Todd Gurley (quad) is doubtful.

Neither of the Cowboys’ starting OT’s practiced Friday. a red flag.

                        9) Washington Redskins will start Case Keenum at QB Sunday in Miami, in Bill Callahan’s first game as the interim coach. Expect Keenum to hand off a lot.

                        8) Living in Denver must be weird; at 2pm Wednesday, it was 79 degrees- at 2pm Thursday, it was 24 degrees, the 15th-largest temperature drop in Denver history.

                        7) MLB sources say that a player who accepts a qualifying offer this winter will get a one-year, $17.8M contract next season, down from $17.9M this year. It’s the first time the value of the qualifying offer has ever dropped from one year to the next.

                        6) XFL players will earn an average of $55,000, when the new football league starts in February; by way of contrast, the minimum salary in the NFL is $495,000.

                        5) From Ralph Michaels: Since 2015, home favorites in Game 1 of a baseball playoff series:
                        — If a favorite of -$135 or less: 3-7
                        — If a favorite of -$136 or more: 20-3

                        4) Heard this yesterday and while it isn’t new news, it does raise an eyebrow; UNLV’s basketball team hasn’t been in the NCAA’s since 2013. Long time. 30 years ago, UNLV basketball was like Gonzaga is now; a huge fish in a tiny pond (Big West Conference) that more than held its own nationally. Gonzaga is in the WCC, also a fairly small pond

                        3) Red Sox led the major leagues this year, winning eight (out of 45) games where they trailed by 4+ runs at some point in the game.

Minnesota was the only team that didn’t win a game (0-35) when they trailed by 4+ runs.

                        2) NFL coaches are 1-21 on pass interference challenges; NFL appeased the Saints by putting in a rule they don’t seem to want to enforce. Go figure.

                        1) RIP to the outstanding actor Robert Forster, 78, who passed away Friday; I remember him most from the terrific movie Jackie Brown, where he played a bail bondsman, and also from a 2-part episode of Magnum PI, where he played an old Army buddy of Magnum. RIP, sir.

BOMBERS TOP ALS TO KEEP PACE IN WEST
                            CFL.CA STAFF

WINNIPEG — A pick six and a big rushing performance from Andrew Harris led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 35-24 home win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. The Bombers notched four interceptions and snapped a three game losing streak, improving their record to 10-6 to keep pace in the West.

Harris led the Bombers to a touchdown on their opening drive, and Winnipeg’s defence held the Als to a field goal on their first series. Special teams gave Montreal a major spark later in the first quarter when Mario Alford came through with a punt return touchdown for the second straight game.

Winnipeg grabbed the lead back in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Chris Streveler to Drew Wolitarsky, and the Blue and Gold led by five points heading into half-time.

The Als retook the lead when Vernon Adams Jr. threw a 30-yard touchdown to Jake Wieneke, but three straight field goals from Justin Medlock gave Winnipeg a 24-17 lead later in the third quarter.

Winnipeg extended the lead in the fourth quarter with a huge pick six from Nick Taylor and another Medlock field goal. Marcus Sayles’ second interception of the game sealed the victory for the Bombers.

Harris gained 106 rushing yards in the first half and finished with a career-high 166 yards on 24 carries, bringing his league-leading rushing total to 1,261 yards.

A slashing 14-yard run from Harris converted an early second down on the Bombers’ opening drive. Streveler followed it up with another first down gain on the ground, accelerating to the left edge of the Als’ defence for 11 yards. Harris then added a five-yard carry before capping off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run to put Winnipeg on top.

Montreal responded with a solid drive that saw Adams throw 21-yard strikes to both Eugene Lewis and Quan Bray, but the Bombers’ defence held strong and forced the Als to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Boris Bede.

But the Als grabbed the lead with a bang later in the opening quarter when Alford turned on the jets and returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. Alford zoomed up the left sideline for the score, and Bede added the extra point to put Montreal up 10-7.

Winnipeg regained the lead in the second quarter when Streveler led a 65-yard scoring drive that he finished off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Wolitarsky. Streveler moved the chains three times on the drive with big throws to Kenny Lawler, Wolitarsky and Janarion Grant. Medlock kicked the convert to give the Bombers a 14-10 advantage.

The Bombers added another point to their lead on the following kickoff when Alford was tackled in the Als’ end zone for a single.

But frustration set in for Winnipeg just before half-time, as Streveler was picked off in the red zone by defensive back Tommie Campbell. The Bombers were marching down the field and looked poised to extend their lead before the turnover.

Montreal retook the lead in the third quarter when Adams displayed his athleticism on a beautiful 30-yard touchdown throw to Wieneke. Adams scrambled to the left and froze defensive back Marcus Rios in his tracks before throwing an accurate strike to Wieneke. Bede kicked the convert to give Montreal a 17-15 lead.

The Als’ lead did not last long, as Grant immediately came through with a huge 74-yard kickoff return that set up a 43-yard field goal from Medlock.

The Bombers’ special teams followed up with another big play after their defence came up with a stop. Boris Bede was set to punt for the Als, but heavy pressure forced the punter to hold onto the ball and take a loss for a turnover on downs.

Harris moved the ball inside the 10-yard line with a 21-yard run on the next play, but Montreal stood tall on defence and forced Winnipeg to settle for a 14-yard field goal from Medlock.

Adams was picked off on the very first play of the next drive when his pass was tipped by Winston Rose and intercepted by Marcus Sayles. Streveler followed the turnover up one play later with a big 35-yard pass to Rasheed Bailey. Bailey beat Campbell in coverage, and the big gain set up a 42-yard field goal from Medlock that gave Winnipeg a 24-17 lead.

Winnipeg came up with a pick six on defence in the fourth quarter, as Taylor intercepted Adams after the quarterback rolled to his right and attempted to complete a pass to Bray. Taylor returned the pick 37 yards for the score, and Medlock’s extra point gave the Bombers a 31-17 lead.

Streveler was intercepted on the Bombers’ next possession by linebacker Boseko Lokombo, giving Montreal solid field position and a jolt of momentum. But the Bombers’ defence bailed Streveler out when Chandler Fenner picked off Adams in the end zone three plays later.

Medlock extended Winnipeg’s lead to 17 points with a 46-yard field goal, and Sayles stepped up with his second pick in the final minutes.

The Als made things interesting late with a 37-yard touchdown strike from Adams to Bray, but it was too little too late as Winnipeg took the win.

Week 19 will see the Montreal Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts next Friday at 7:00 p.m. EDT., while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will travel to take on the Calgary Stampeders the following Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

ESKS BEAT LIONS TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT
                              CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON — Greg Ellingson totaled 133 receiving yards to lead the Edmonton Eskimos to a 19-6 home win over the BC Lions on Saturday night. The Esks improve to an 8-8 record while securing a playoff spot.

An early field goal from Sean Whyte gave Edmonton the lead, and the Lions found themselves facing major adversity when starting quarterback Mike Reilly left the game with a suspected broken left wrist midway through the first quarter.

A rushing touchdown from running back Shaquille Cooper extended the Esks’ lead in the second quarter, and Whyte’s third field goal of the game gave Edmonton a 16-3 lead heading into half-time.

The Lions clawed their way closer in the fourth quarter with a field goal from Sergio Castillo, and T.J. Lee came up with a late interception in the end zone. But a field goal from Whyte in the final minute sealed the victory for Edmonton.

Ellingson surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the fifth straight season, and Ricky Collins Jr. achieved the same accomplishment for the first time in his CFL career.

Edmonton took an early lead on a 22-yard field goal from Whyte that was set up by a 15-yard catch from Collins. The Lions suffered a major loss later in the opening quarter when Reilly was forced to leave the game with an injury after taking a hit from defensive end Kwaku Boateng. Backup Danny O’Brien took over at quarterback for BC.

The Esks extended their lead in the second quarter on a 63-yard scoring drive that was capped off with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Cooper. Cooper carried the ball four times for 24 yards to set up his second rushing score of the season, and Whyte kicked the convert to give Edmonton a 10-point lead.

Logan Kilgore came up with a huge throw for the Esks late in the opening half while evading pressure from defensive end Odell Willis. Kilgore scrambled to the left and made a tight 14-yard throw on the run to Ellingson to convert on second down. Ellingson followed the play up with an 18-yard grab one play later, but the drive stalled and Edmonton settled for a 49-yard field goal from Whyte.

The Lions got on the board with under a minute to go in the half on a 20-yard field goal from Castillo. Lions leading receiver Bryan Burnham helped set up the kick with a 20-yard catch. But Edmonton managed to extend the lead once again just before half-time, as a big 40-yard catch from Ellingson put Whyte in position to make a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The Esks appeared to come up with a turnover on defence in the third quarter when Forrest Hightower and Nick Usher combined on a tackle to knock the ball out of Rashaun Simonise’s hands. But upon further review, it was determined that Jevon Cottoy initially recovered the fumble for BC before being ruled down by contact.

Defence was the story for the remainder of the third quarter, and BC came up with a key goal line stand on third down to keep the Esks out of the end zone. Linebacker Kevin Haynes made the tackle on quarterback Troy Williams to force the turnover on downs.

Running back John White got the following drive going with a 25-yard rush, and a pair of short completions from O’Brien set up a 46-yard field goal from Castillo that made the score 16-6 to start the fourth quarter.

A 41-yard punt return from Christion Jones gave the Esks renewed momentum late in the game, but the Lions came up with a timely interception on defence when Lee picked off Kilgore in the end zone.

But Edmonton got the ball back just three plays later when defensive back Tyquwan Glass picked off O’Brien while the quarterback attempted to complete a pass to Duron Carter on third down. Whyte then added a 21-yard field goal to seal the victory and secure Edmonton’s spot in the playoffs.

Week 19 will see the BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Friday at 10:00 p.m. EDT., while the Edmonton Eskimos will get a week off before they host the Riders in Week 20.
