Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

    13) From Liam Stack (this story made me laugh):
A New Zealand man brought an emotional support clown to a meeting where he knew he’d be fired. The clown blew up balloons and folded them into a series of animals throughout the meeting, then mimed crying when the man was handed a pink slip.

Didn’t help; the guy still lost his job.

    12) From Russell Baxter: 72 of the 106 Super Bowl teams started that season 2-0; only four of them started 0-2.

    11) Atlanta Falcons play their first nine games this year in domes; their first of only three outdoor games is Week 11 (Nov 17) at Carolina.

    10) From Ralph Michaels: Since 2016, under is 18-9 in college football games that had a total of 40 or less points.

    9) Colts, Eagles and Packers are pretty banged up; they all scrapped their traditional Wednesday practices this week, and had walk-throughs instead.

    8) David Fales would appear to be the Jets’ new backup QB; he’s thrown 48 passes in three NFL games, two for Miami in 2017 (with Adam Gase as coach) and one for Chicago in 2016. Fales played college ball at San Jose State.

    7) Football stuff:
    — Chiefs’ LT Eric Fisher is having core muscle surgery, is out this week.

    6) Last time there was a week of NFL games where no team scored 30+ points was Week 9 in 1995, so long ago that the Houston Oilers won a game that week.

    5) Pirates’ closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested in Pittsburgh Tuesday on charges of soliciting a child, computer pornography and providing obscene material to minors.

    4) Giancarlo Stanton’s over/under home run total for this year was 41.5; wth 11 days left in this season, he has one homer and seven RBI.

    3) A’s 1, Royals 0 (11)— Mark Canha got the walk-off hit on Mark Canha T-shirt Day and Chad Pinder made a great catch in left field to save two runs as Oakland won its 92nd game this year.

    2) Four teams that got to the Super Bowl after starting season 0-2:
    — 1993— Cowboys (won Super Bowl)
    — 1996— Patriots (lost)
    — 2001— Patriots (won)
    — 2007— Giants (won)

    1) From Annie Karni of the New York Times:

“Sean Spicer got a minimum of $125,000 to be on Dancing With the Stars, and the pay goes up with every week he stays on.”

We live in a very strange world.

    • CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
      David Schwab

There were just three games in the CFL this past weekend starting with British Columbia’s 29-5 romp over Ottawa on Friday night as a 5 ½-point home favorite.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader got underway with Calgary squeezing past Hamilton 19-18 while failing to cover as a 6 ½-point favorite at home. In the nightcap, Saskatchewan kept things perfect for the home team with a 27-25 victory against Montreal. However, the Roughriders could not cover the closing 6 ½-point spread in the third Week 14 inter-division matchup.

      Friday, Sept. 20

Calgary Stampeders (8-4 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-9 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)
      Point-spread: Calgary -7
      Total: 53

      Game Overview

The Stampeders are just one game off the pace in the West Division standings with Saturday’s win. They have won their last three games straight-up with a 5-2 record against the spread over their past seven games. The total stayed UNDER 51 ½ points against Hamilton and it has stayed UNDER in seven of Calgary’s last 10 games. A blocked field goal with less than a minute to play was the difference in that last win. Bo Levi Mitchell helped the cause with 342 yards passing and one touchdown throw.

The Argonauts come off their bye with a 3-1-1 record ATS over their last five games. They hammered Ottawa 46-17 their last time out as five-point road underdogs. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings. James Wilder Jr. posted three scores in that romp and McLeod Bethel-Thompson finished the day with 411 yards passing with three touchdown throws. That was the most points Toronto scored all season with an offense that is averaging 20.4 points per game.

      Betting Trends

-- Calgary has beaten Toronto SU in 11 of the last 12 meetings and it is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games in this inter-division matchup. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-3 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-6 SU, 4-8 ATS)
      Point-spread: TBA
      Total: TBA

      Game Overview

With Montreal’s loss on Saturday, the Tiger-Cats are still 2 ½ games up in the East standings. The loss to Calgary snapped a SU four-game winning streak and the cover evened their record to 2-2-1 ATS in that same span on games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games. Hamilton got a solid effort from quarterback Dane Evans in the losing cause. He completed 79.1 percent of his 43 passing attempts for 360 yards and one score. Five different players ran the ball for a total of 113 yards rushing on 20 carries.

The Eskimos are coming off their bye week with three losses in a row both SU and ATS. This includes a home-and-home sweep at the hands of Calgary. They have failed to cover in five of their last six games with the total staying UNDER in seven of their last 10 contests. Edmonton is 2-4 ATS in six previous home games. Trevor Harris missed most of his last start due to injury and he remains questionable for Friday night. Logan Kilgore completed 21-of-28 throws for 242 yards in relief.

      Betting Trends

-- Hamilton is 4-2 SU in its last six games against Edmonton and the total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in this inter-division matchup. The Eskimos are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games against Hamilton.

      Saturday, Sept. 21

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS)
      Point-spread: Winnipeg -2
      Total: 47

      Game Overview

Ahead of last week’s bye, Winnipeg won four of its previous five games SU and it has covered ATS in its last four outings. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The Blue Bombers are 4-2 ATS on the road this season. They are still missing Matt Nichols at quarterback with a bad shoulder, but he is listed as questionable on the latest injury report. In his place, Chris Streveler has thrown for 518 yards and four touchdowns in his last three starts. The offense averaged 28.7 points in those three games.

Saturday’s loss snapped a SU three-game winning streak that started with a stunning road win against Calgary. Montreal is just 2-4 ATS over its last six games and it is 2-3 ATS in five previous home games. Vernon Adams Jr. completed 22-of-36 passing attempts for 344 yards and one score his last time out with Eugene Lewis hauling in eight catches for 130 yards and that lone passing touchdown. The Alouettes ran the ball 18 times for 74 yards against Saskatchewan.

      Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg brings a SU five-game winning streak into this inter-division tilt while going 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Montreal. The total went OVER in four of those last five matchups.

British Columbia (2-10 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)
      Point-spread: BC -3
      Total: 47 ½

Friday’s win was the Lions’ first SU victory since July 6. It was also their fourth cover in their last five contests. The total stayed UNDER 49 points against Ottawa and it has stayed UNDER in BC’s last four games. In this home-and-home series opener, BC opened up a 21-0 lead at halftime and cruised to the win behind a stellar effort on defense. This was also one of Mike Reilly’s better efforts of the season with 286 yards passing and two touchdown throws against a pair of interceptions. He has thrown for 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on the year.

Ottawa has just one SU win in its last 10 games while going 3-7 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last five games. The RedBlacks are 1-5 ATS at home this season. Jonathon Jennings continues to get the call at quarterback. He completed 19-of-31 passes for 239 yards and zero scores verse a pair of picks in Friday’s loss. He was the team’s leading rusher with 37 yards on eight attempts. Mossis Madu added another 28 yards rushing on eight carries.

      Betting Trends:

-- With Friday’s win, BC is now 14-5 SU in its last 19 games against Ottawa. The Lions have a 5-2 edge ATS in the last seven meetings. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in three of the last five matchups in this inter-division clash.

Although he hasn’t been lighting up the stat sheet in his three games since returning to the lineup, Mitchell has been doing what he does best – winning. He’s averaging 286 passing yards over those three starts, tossing four touchdown passes and three picks.

It’s important to note that Calgary is relying heavily on the reigning Most Outstanding Player. He’s thrown 40 passes in each of his last two games.

“He makes the big throws,” head coach Dave Dickenson told Stampeders.com of his quarterback. “He’s just a winner. Him and I, we play off each other. We’re just so competitive. I want him to be better and better and better. He takes ownership. He takes leadership. Makes his own mistakes but owns them, moves forward and wins.”

A team that has not been doing as much winning as Calgary has been the Toronto Argonauts, although they are coming off their most impressive performance of the season. Prior to their bye last week, Toronto defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 46-17.

The Argos have struggled to close out games all season, but they outscored Ottawa 28-4 in the second half.

James Wilder Jr. did most of the damage, finding the end zone three times in the fourth quarter. Wilder has been trying to regain the form that saw him earn Most Outstanding Rookie honours in 2017, with his 87 all-purpose yards on 11 touches being one of his best showings of the year.

Another player lighting it up for Toronto has been McLeod Bethel-Thompson. He is currently second in league passing yards and is one of only two quarterbacks to surpass 3,000 yards thus far this season. Even more impressive is the fact that Bethel-Thompson has done it while starting 2019 as the Argos backup.

“Certainly, there has been a progression for him,” Argos offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine said of Bethel-Thompson. “He probably felt that he not only had some things to learn, but some things that he wanted to prove to himself. As a human being that makes you perform in a certain way. I think as the year has gone on, maybe the chip on his shoulder has turned more into a positive asset than being overbearing.”

The Stamps lead the league in interceptions with 19, so Friday will be a good test for Bethel-Thompson. Moreover, the 31-year-old has never beaten the Calgary Stampeders, while Mitchell is a perfect 10-0 versus Toronto in his career.

“It’s all about winning,” Bethel-Thompson said. “I’m a 2-9 quarterback. We’re a 2-9 football team. Until we start winning, and once we get this win streak going, and we start rolling, and racking them up week after week, that’s when football is going to be fun. Right now, I feel like we’re on the brink of fighting back. Hopefully we can come off this bye week and get this ball rolling and start the new season with a win and take these last seven.”

Tre Roberson is a big part of Calgary leading the league in picks, but it was his work on special teams that made headlines last week. He leapt an estimated 10 feet in the air, stuffing a Hamilton field goal attempt that would have given the Tiger-Cats the lead with under a minute to go.

Roberson’s heroics overshadowed another highlight-reel special teams play from Calgary. In the second quarter with a Stampeders drive having sputtered out, Rob Maver lined up to punt…until he didn’t. Maver came up throwing and hit reserve fullback Ante Milanovic-Litre for a 25-yard gain to keep the drive alive.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’d rather throw the football than kick it,” Maver said. “I like having those bigger contributions. Punts can be big contributions, but anytime you can put the offence back on the field, it’s great. I probably throw the ball more than I kick during a day and I beg for those.”

Four plays later, Mitchell hit Eric Rogers to give the Stamps a lead they would maintain for the rest of the contest.

For the Stampeders, playing an Argos team coming off a bye on the road won’t be easy, especially with a growing injured list. Leading receiver Reggie Begelton, who went over the 1,000-yard mark last weekend, won’t be available for Friday’s game, while CFL leading tackler Cory Greenwood is also out.

With Markeith Ambles also sidelined, Aaron Peck and Josh Huff expand their roles in a relatively inexperienced receiving core. While Nate Holley gets the start at linebacker, the O-line will start three Canadians this week with Justin Lawrence drawing in for Nila Kasitati.

TOP OFFENCES CLASH AS TICATS VISIT ESKIMOS
            CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON — The number 15 will be on full display during a Friday night confrontation between two teams with their sights on the playoffs.

The league’s top two offensive powers in Edmonton (6-6) and Hamilton (9-3) will square off Friday night at The Brick Field in Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton will honour legendary quarterback Ricky Ray, who wore the number 15, at halftime by naming him to the team’s Wall of Honour.

On the field, Edmonton quarterback Logan Kilgore will start in place of an injured Trevor Harris. Kilgore will don Ray’s number 15 against the Ticats Friday. The Californian has made one appearance this season, throwing 242 passing yards and one touchdown.

“If you look at anyone who has been good in this league, at some point they came in for somebody,” Kilgore said. “You get an opportunity and that’s what happens.”

“It’s kind of surreal that this opportunity is arising for Logan,” Esks head coach, and former teammate of Ray’s, Jason Maas told the Edmonton Journal this week. “And not only that, Logan and Ricky are very close. They come from the same area, they’ve known each other for a long time too. I think Logan has as much respect for Ricky as he does for probably anybody in football. I think we all do.”

As for Harris, he is now on the one-game injured list. He practised at different points this week, trying to play through a forearm injury. He spoke to the media earlier this week about the pain he was suffering.

“It was almost debilitating,” he said. “Just not being able to throw a football. It’s something I’ve been able to do my whole life. It’s like one of your senses is gone. I was like ‘I can’t throw, I don’t know what to do’.”

Friday’s meeting will be the first between Hamilton and Edmonton this season. The Ticats are also coming off an 19-18 loss to the Calgary Stampeders, their first in their last five games. Ticats head coach Orlondo Steinauer anticipates a tough matchup against a well-rested opponent.

“Coming off a bye, we’re going to get Edmonton’s best, so this should be a great football game,” Steinauer said.

“I’m just trying to do whatever my job is,” Ticats quarterback Dane Evans said. “To move the ball down the field and put some points on the board.”

“You’ve got to match (Edmonton’s defence) play for play as much as you can,” Ticats defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Mark Washington said. “They have an outstanding front. They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Hopefully, we can do the same thing.”

Tiger-Cats receiver Jalin Marshall will be in the lineup Friday. The former National Football League draft pick has yet to make a catch in the Canadian Football League. Defensive back Will Likely III will also be in the lineup. Hamilton will sit linebacker Jordan Moore and receiver Justin Sumpter, with both players on the practice roster.

Luke Tasker returned to practice this week but is not yet ready to return. Meanwhile, the Ticats will start Jackson Bennett at running back, with Anthony Coombs also in the equation as Tyrell Sutton remains on the practice roster.

Shutdown corner Delvin Breaux is still on the six-game injured list, as the Ticats have had to overcome plenty of injuries en route to their impressive record so far.

Edmonton defensive end and Canadian Mathieu Betts will make his CFL debut Friday. The 24-year old tried to catch on with the Chicago Bears of the NFL earlier this year. Edmonton drafted Betts in this year’s draft and they put pen to paper on a contract during the bye week.

“The whole point for me is to make my time here in Edmonton count,” said Betts, who was ranked the country’s top amateur prospect by the CFL Scouting Bureau before going in the first round back in the spring. “I’m looking forward to my first game against Hamilton and just trying to work on my craft.”

Edmonton will also start defensive back Forrest Hightower and left tackle Tommie Draheim Friday. Neither player suited up for the team during their last game, a loss versus Calgary Sept. 7.

Defensive back Scott Hutter will also be in the lineup. Defensive back Tyquwan Glass, linebacker Jonathan Walton and offensive lineman Kwabena Asare have been moved to the practice roster. Defensive lineman Jesse Joseph has been placed on the six-game injured list.

            BY THE NUMBERS

0 — For all the love that Edmonton’s defence has received, they have yet to register a defensive touchdown. They also haven’t had a kick return for a touchdown yet this year.

500 — Ticats defensive end Simoni Lawrence needs one more tackle to have 500 for his career. He is 38th all-time in tackles.

33 — Ticats receiver Brandon Banks needs 33 more receiving yards to have 1,000 for the season. It would result in a third straight season with 1,000 receiving yards or more.

14 — Edmonton kicker Sean Whyte has made 14 consecutive field goals coming into Friday’s game.

Kickoff is at 9:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

STAMPS STRIKE EARLY TO TOP ARGOS

TORONTO — A dominant first half by the Calgary Stampeders was the difference, as they came out with a 23-16 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night.

Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell finished the game 33 of 48 for 346 yards and a touchdown. A first-quarter scoring toss to Ka’Deem Carey and a 35-yard connection with Eric Rogers highlighted his evening of work.

Terry Williams led the way for the running backs, gaining 42 all-purpose yards. He opened the scoring with a 24-yard run in the first quarter.

Rogers hauled in six catches for 94 yards on the game. Josh Huff also finished with over 50 yards on four receptions.

The Calgary defence was able to get to the opposing quarterback on six occasions, with Mike Rose and Derek Wiggan nabbing two sacks apiece. Royce Metchie also hauled in an interception in the first half.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 63 percent of his passes for 86 yards in the loss. He was replaced by James Franklin in the third quarter, and the backup finished with 147 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 16 passing.

The first scoring drive of the contest would come with just over seven minutes to go in the opening frame. Mitchell covered 68 yards in just four plays, starting the drive off with a pair of completions to Colton Hunchak and Aaron Peck for gains of 8 and 13 yards, respectively. An Abdul Kanneh penalty for a horse-collar tackle on Peck would tack on another 15 yards, setting the Stamps up at the opposing 32-yard line. Following another 8-yard connection with Hunchak, Williams would make good on his opening rush of the contest, breaking to the right and tip-toeing the sideline to scamper into the end zone from 24 yards out. Rene Paredes would give the visitors an early 7-0 lead with the point-after.

Bethel-Thompson would look to answer right back with a scoring drive of his own, but while trying to find Rodney Smith down the left sideline, Royce Metchie would get his hands on the ball and toe-tap in bounds for his second interception of the campaign. The Stamps’ offence would immediately convert the turnover into points.

Mitchell found Rogers over the middle, and the receiver turned upfield and made a few defenders missed. After Kennan Gilchrist dragged him down, it stood as a gain of 35, with 23 of those coming after the catch. Hunchak would pick up another 12 on his third reception of the evening before a short pass for Carey saw the running back have open field down the right side. He’d double the Calgary lead following the 11-yard catch and run — as well as Paredes’ second convert — to end the first quarter.

The second quarter would be more of the same for the double blue. They’d make some positive steps towards moving the ball downfield but were forced to punt by the Calgary defence.

The stamps would extend its lead further just two minutes into the second. A pair of Mitchell completions to Huff would see a total of 18 yards gained through the air, but Bear Woods would stuff Terry Williams at the line of scrimmage to force a field goal. Paredes would calmly knock a 42-yarder through the uprights, giving the Stamps a 17-point advantage.

Toronto would get some life following that score, however. A Ronnie Pfeffer punt pinned the Stamps inside their own 15, and on the first play of the drive, Mitchell’s dump pass over the line of scrimmage would be gobbled up by Gilchrist.

The Argos would be set up with the ball already in the red zone, but a sack by Rose on their opening play would push them back to the 20. They’d get that yardage back, as Bethel-Thompson would get the ball into the hands of James Wilder, who rumbled down the left sideline, hurdled Tre Roberson and was tackled at the 2-yard line. Instead of rolling the dice, the Argos opted to take the points. Tyler Crapigna blasted home a 9-yard field goal to get the hosts on the board.

Toronto attempted to go for it on third down with around 1:30 left in the half, but after coming up short, they’d give Calgary the ball at midfield. Mitchell had a 15-yard completion to Williams and another 19-yarder to Rogers but a pair of incompletions stalled the drive. Paredes’ second field goal of the contest — a 17-yarder — gave the Stamps a 20-3 lead heading into halftime.

To open the half, Calgary began to grind out the clock, with Mitchell using short-yardage passing the keep the drive going. They would kill off the opening 5:24 of the third, but Mitchell was picked off by Trumaine Washington just outside of the end zone as he was trying to find a streaking Rogers. The Argos wouldn’t be able to take advantage, however, as they’d go two-and-out.

After that, James Franklin would enter the game for the Argos, and he’d make an immediate impact. He’d air a ball out down the middle to catch a sliding Armanti Edwards, who’d get his hands underneath the ball for a gain of 45 yards. Another gain of seven on a short pass was all the offence could muster other than that. Crapigna would hit a 36-yard field goal and cut the Calgary lead to 14 going into the final frame.

The teams would trade field goals in the fourth quarter, with Paredes hitting a 15-yarder and Crapigna answering with a 35-yard kick of his own. The Argos would add a late score when Franklin found Derel Walker streaking through the middle, but the Stamps would run out the remainder of the clock to secure a 23-16 road win.

With the victory, the Stampeders have won their last four games. They’ll have Week 16 off before returning to action against the Montreal Alouettes on Oct. 5. The Boatmen will welcome the Saskatchewan Roughriders to BMO Field in their next game on Sept. 28.

TICATS EDGE ESKS WITH LAST-SECOND FIELD GOAL
                  CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON — Lirim Hajrullahu kicked a 34-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to lift the Hamilton Tiger-Cats over the Edmonton Eskimos with a 30-27 road win on Friday night. The Ticats survived a 24-point comeback to earn the victory, improving their record to 10-3 while clinching a playoff spot.

The Ticats set the tone early on by reaching the end zone on three consecutive offensive drives in the first quarter. Brandon Banks put Hamilton up early with a 42-yard catch-and-run touchdown, and Dane Evans followed it up with a pair of lightning-quick scoring drives that saw him throw deep touchdown passes to Marcus Tucker and Bralon Addison.

17 unanswered points from Edmonton made it a one-possession game late in the third quarter, and the Esks tied the game up in the fourth with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Logan Kilgore.

The game was tied at 27 apiece in the final minute after both teams traded field goals, but Evans led the Ticats’ offence down the field in the final 30 seconds to set up the deciding kick that went off the uprights and in.

Evans started the game on fire by completing his first seven passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns, while Banks surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the third straight season.

The Ticats struck first in the opening quarter when Banks turned on the jets to reach the end zone on a 42-yard touchdown. Evans completed the ensuing two-point conversion pass to Anthony Coombs to give Hamilton an early 8-0 lead.

It did not take long for the Ticats to further increase their momentum, as their defence stepped up on the following drive with a big turnover. Frankie Williams made a diving catch to intercept Kilgore’s pass, and the pick led to points on the very next play.

Evans capitalized on the early opportunity and threw a deep bomb down the field to Tucker for a 41-yard touchdown, with Tucker using straight line speed to beat Josh Johnson in man-to-man coverage for the score. Hajrullahu kicked the extra point to increase Hamilton’s lead to 15 points.

Hamilton’s hot first quarter continued on the team’s next drive when Evans went deep yet again, this time connecting with Addison for a huge 76-yard touchdown. Addison broke a tackle after making the catch and proceeded to outrun Monshadrik Hunter to the end zone. The Ticats attempted the two-point conversion, but Edmonton came up with the stop to keep the score at 21-0.

Hajrullahu extended the Ticats’ lead to 24 points with a 48-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, and the defence came up with another takeaway when Rolle picked off an underthrown pass from Kilgore. But Edmonton got the ball right back a few plays later when linebacker Vontae Diggs intercepted Evans inside the Esks’ 15-yard line to shut down the drive.

The Esks got on the board before half-time with a quick four-play, 51-yard scoring drive that saw Kilgore throw a 29-yard strike to Tevaun Smith before following it up with a six-yard touchdown pass to DaVaris Daniels. Sean Whyte kicked the extra point to make it a 24-7 game heading into the third quarter.

The Ticats attempted to increase their lead with another field goal in the third, but Hajrullahu’s kick went wide to the right and ended up in the waiting hands of Esks returner Christion Jones. Jones then proceeded to make seemingly every Hamilton player on the field miss as he returned the ball 100 yards into the red zone to set up Edmonton’s offence.

Hamilton’s defence held strong to force a field goal, and Whyte made the 22-yard kick to cut the Ticats’ lead down to 14 points.

Edmonton’s defence forced another turnover later in the third quarter when Mathieu Betts stripped the ball from Evans before recovering the fumble himself. The defensive play created momentum, and the Esks found the end zone two plays later when Kilgore hit Greg Ellingson with a 32-yard touchdown strike.

Ellingson somehow managed to come down with the ball in the end zone while being covered closely by Williams, and Whyte added the extra point to make the score 24-17 with under five minutes to go in the third quarter.

Edmonton tied the game early in the fourth after Kilgore scored a one-yard rushing touchdown, but Hamilton regained the lead when Hajrullahu made a 38-yard field goal.

The Esks got the ball back on offence with just over two minutes to play, but Kilgore’s deep pass intended for Daniels was picked off by Rolle.

Edmonton managed to force another punt, and the Esks evened the score with a field goal from Whyte with under a minute left. But Evans made the most of the final possession, and he managed to lead his team to a game-winning field goal despite getting the ball back with only 30 seconds.

Week 16 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats square off with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the road next Friday, while the Edmonton Eskimos will face the Ottawa REDBLACKS on the road next Saturday.

                      • PREVIEW
BOMBERS, ALS SET TO SQUARE OFF IN MONTREAL
                        CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL – Andrew Harris is set to return to the lineup as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers voyage east to take on the Montreal Alouettes Saturday afternoon at Percival Molson Stadium.

Harris had the inside track for both Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian prior to being levied his two-game suspension, and he’ll be looking to pick up where he left off on Friday.

The ageless running back is less than 100 yards shy of his fifth career 1,000-yard rushing season. Despite missing the last two contests, his 908 yards still lead the CFL along with his 6.4 yards per carry.

“It’s been a tough few months,” Harris told BlueBombers.com. “I’ve had a lot of positive support from fans, family and a lot of random people I don’t even know. Overall, it’s been extremely tough, but I’m looking forward to moving forward now and getting back out there with my teammates.”

Second-year Canadian Johnny Augustine filled in admirably for Harris. Augustine put up over 100 all-purpose yards in each of his starts, earning a receiving touchdown in the process. Harris will undoubtedly be the back of choice, but the Blue and Gold now know they have a dependable second option.

Saturday’s matchup features arguably the league’s top two rushers. Opposite Harris is William Stanback, a breakout star for the Alouettes. Stanback also missed a pair of games (due to an injury suffered in Week 8) and is second behind Harris with 6.2 yards per carry.

“Andrew Harris is a Hall of Fame guy,” Als quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. told MontrealAlouettes.com. “He’s been doing it for a long time as a receiver and a running back, but as of right now, I’m picking Stanback over Harris. No disrespect to Andrew Harris, don’t try to mix me up.”

The 25-year-old American hasn’t rushed for over 100 yards since his injury, although he did find the end zone for the first time since early July in the Als loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. The task will be a tall one for Stanback on Saturday, with the Bombers boasting the league’s best run defence.

Winnipeg allows a mere 67.8 rushing yards per game, by far the lowest in the CFL. Opposing teams only attempt around 13 ground plays against the Bombers in any given game, meaning the Als might have to go to the air to find success against Winnipeg.

The Bombers are looking to exercise some demons on the road. Their first loss of the year came when they were stunned in Hamilton by the Tiger-Cats in Week 7, before the Toronto Argonauts put together a heart-stopping comeback at BMO Field the very next week. All three of Winnipeg’s losses have come away from IG Field, although they did defeat the Als 56-10 last year at Percival Molson Stadium.

John Bowman will be looking to reach a career milestone Saturday. The veteran of 225 CFL games (all with the Als) is one sack shy of moving into sole possession of sixth place on the CFL all-time list. The next time he tosses an opposing quarterback to the turf, it will be his 130th career sack, surpassing Vince Goldsmith.

“I’ve waited my turn, I never forced myself into a situation I wasn’t ready for,” Bowman said when reflecting on his career. “I didn’t come here with no knowledge of pro sports. I wasn’t overly assertive; I listened, I learned, I took my time. If coach asked me to do something, I did it.”

The Bombers feature a star D-lineman of their own. Willie Jefferson has been on a tear as of late, notching seven sacks in his last four games, including a trio against Edmonton in Week 11. Jefferson sits at 11 sacks in 2019, two behind league leader Charleston Hughes.

The Blue Bombers will clinch a playoff spot with a win or a tie on Saturday and would also guarantee a post-season berth if the Ottawa REDBLACKS lose or tie versus the BC Lions. It would be the franchise’s fourth straight year with playoff football.

“We’ve got to take care of business in the coming weeks,” Nic Demski said. “The East is still very promising, but you always know what you’re going to get in the West and it always comes down to crunch time and the last couple of games, so to close out the season against Calgary and have that game in Saskatchewan obviously means a lot and we have a lot of business to take care of.”

100 – Als centre Kristian Matte is slated to make his 100th career start Saturday. He has spent his entire nine-year career in Montreal.

4 – With a victory, Winnipeg would reach 10-plus wins for the fourth straight year.

34 – First quarter points allowed by the Alouettes this season – the fewest in the league.

92 – Rushing yards needed for Andrew Harris to reach 1,000 on the season.

LIONS LOOK TO COMPLETE SWEEP OF REDBLACKS

OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS and BC Lions will meet Saturday evening in the nation’s capital at TD Place to close out a CFL double-header.

The two teams are meeting the second time in eight days. The Lions earned a 29-5 victory over Ottawa back on Sept. 13 in Vancouver. Lions head coach DeVone Claybrooks expects Ottawa will be a better team the second time around.

“I reiterated the points about playing a team back to back in a home and home series and a lot of teams don’t have success on the back end of that, so we want to make sure we’re one of the teams that are bucking that trend,” Claybrooks said.

“We understand that wins are hard to come by in this league clearly, from our record. You can’t get too high, you have to stay focused on the task at hand the journey of what we’re trying to do. Great teams and teams that compete for championships show up every week.”

On top of getting revenge for their Sept. 13 loss, Ottawa is trying to fight for their fading playoff hopes. Even if they lose to BC this week, they can still catch the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division.

“There’s ebbs and flows in a football game,” REDBLACKS punter Richie Leone said. “Sometimes you think it’s going to go one way. But these guys get paid too. It’s not always going to go the way you want it to be. But we gotta be able to bounce back,”

Despite a losing season, the BC Lions can boast that they’ve had durability at the quarterback position this year. Mike Reilly is the only starting pivot to have played in all of his team’s games this season. The secret to him staying healthy enough to play?

“I’m just hard-headed,” he said. “I know what I had to go through to get the opportunity to play. Having to sit behind Travis (Lulay) for three years, which is a great learning opportunity, but for those three years, I watched so many other teams around the league have their starters get hurt and guys that had been in the league way less than me get the opportunity to play.

“I knew when I finally had the chance it was going to have to be something that literally I couldn’t play. That’s just how I’ve always approached it. I appreciate every time that I get to line up, take the snap and play this game. I never take that for granted.”

Twenty players still remain on the REDBLACKS’ injured list, but they’ll have a few players back in the lineup Saturday. They include Canadian receiver Brad Sinopoli and receiver/returner DeVonte Dedmon.

“It’s always good to get those guys back,” Head Coach Rick Campbell said. “I’m personally always happy for guys when they’re healthy again.”

Dedmon dazzled earlier this season against the Montreal Alouettes when he racked up 377 return yards and two return touchdowns. He hasn’t played since Aug. 2 after reportedly suffering a hamstring injury, and he hopes to bring that game-breaking ability back to the REDBLACKS.

“You need times in the game where you make some big plays, some big game-changing plays that can swing the momentum in your favour and we just haven’t done that part enough,” Dedmon told the Ottawa Citizen earlier this week.

Linebacker Kevin Brown II will also suit up and start Saturday, and Stephane Nembot will backup at right tackle.

As for the Lions, running back Brandon Rutley will be on the one-game injured list. That makes way for running back John White. He’s rushed for 559 yards and five touchdowns this year. Defensive lineman Korey Toomer will also be in the lineup, backing up Jonathan Newsome.

                          BY THE NUMBERS

23 — The Ottawa REDBLACKS had 23 players on their injured list last week. Last year, the Toronto Argonauts had 24 players on their injured list.

43 — BC Lions quarterback Mike Reilly was sacked 43 times in the first 10 games of the season. In the last two games, he’s only been sacked twice.

10 — For the last 10 games, Ottawa REDBLACKS quarterbacks have thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in each of those games.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

ALS COMPLETE INCREDIBLE LAST-MINUTE COMEBACK AGAINST BOMBERS
                                CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL — Vernon Adams jr. led an incredible fourth quarter comeback to lift the Montreal Alouettes over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a 38-37 home win on Saturday. The Als scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, and Adams engineered a 94-yard game-winning drive in the final minute that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jake Wieneke.

The Als now hold a 7-5 record after completing the biggest comeback in franchise history.

A dominant opening drive gave the Bombers an early lead. Quarterback Chris Streveler led the offence down the field on the ground and through the air before capping off the drive with his tenth rushing touchdown of the season.

The Als responded with a field goal after an electric kickoff return from Shaquille Murray-Lawrence, but Winnipeg answered right back with another long scoring drive that saw Streveler throw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Darvin Adams. Streveler’s solid opening half kept rolling when he darted to the end zone on a 38-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, but the Als cut into the lead with a six-yard rushing touchdown from Adams.

A gadget 74-yard passing play from Darvin Adams to Andrew Harris set up Streveler’s third rushing touchdown, and the Bombers’ defence extended the lead when a strip sack from defensive lineman Craig Roh resulted in a fumble recovery touchdown for linebacker Kyrie Wilson.

Montreal responded before half-time after an interception from defensive back Ciante Evans and an incredible catch from DeVier Posey set up a touchdown pass from Adams to Chris Matthews. The Bombers extended their lead with a field goal in the third quarter, but the Als made it a two-possession game with just over ten minutes to play after the offence completed a 98-yard touchdown drive.

Adams threw a beautiful 29-yard touchdown strike to Posey with two minutes remaining to cut Winnipeg’s lead down to six points. The Als came up with a huge sack to force a late punt and get the ball back with a minute to go, and a 60-yard catch from Quan Bray put Montreal in scoring position with just over 10 seconds remaining.

Adams finished the game with 488 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 63 per cent of his throws.

A 26-yard rush from Streveler jump-started Winnipeg’s opening drive, and the Bombers moved the ball inside Montreal’s 20-yard line four plays later after Streveler broke free for a nine-yard run. An 11-yard catch from receiver Nic Demski brought the ball down to the one-yard line, and Streveler finished the drive off with a quarterback sneak touchdown to give Winnipeg the early lead.

A huge 58-yard return from Murray-Lawrence on the ensuing kickoff gave Montreal instant momentum, and Adams capitalized by following it up with a 21-yard completion to Wieneke. But the Bombers’ defence managed to hold the Als there and forced Montreal to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Boris Bede to cut into the lead.

The Bombers came storming back to respond on their next drive. A 19-yard rush from Harris on a sweep play set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Streveler to Adams, and Justin Medlock kicked the extra point to give Winnipeg a 14-3 lead.

Streveler’s big rushing day continued in the second quarter when the quarterback got to the left edge for a 38-yard touchdown run. The Bombers blocked it perfectly up front, leading to Streveler going untouched as he sprinted towards the end zone for the score.

Adams got the passing game going on Montreal’s next drive with a 44-yard strike to Wieneke. A 13-yard catch-and-run from Posey brought the ball into scoring position, and Adams capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Bede kicked the extra point to cut Winnipeg’s lead down to 11 points.

The Bombers dialed up a gadget play to retake momentum on the following drive, as Adams took a direct snap before throwing a 74-yard pass to Harris. Harris gained 39 yards after the catch, broke multiple tackles and nearly scored before going down at the one-yard line. Streveler finished the drive with his third rushing touchdown of the game, and Medlock added the extra point to put Winnipeg up 28-10.

Winnipeg’s defence further increased momentum when Roh got to Adams for a strip sack, and Wilson recovered the fumble before taking it 20 yards to the end zone for the defensive score. But Medlock missed the extra point, leaving the Bombers with a 34-10 lead.

Montreal managed to get things going shortly before half-time after the defence shifted momentum. Evans accelerated to jump a route and intercept Streveler’s pass, and Adams seized the opportunity by leading his team to points in the final minute.

Posey climbed the ladder for a highlight-reel 12-yard grab to secure a fresh set of downs, and Adams capped off the drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Matthews. Bede kicked the extra point to make the score 34-17 heading into the half.

The Bombers added to their lead with a 30-yard field goal from Medlock in the third quarter, but Montreal began to move the ball again in the fourth. Adams spun away from Willie Jefferson to complete a 14-yard pass to receiver Felix Faubert-Lussier, and the big play set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matthews.

Bede added the extra point to make it a two-possession game with just under 12 minutes remaining. Winnipeg attempted to extend the lead with a 53-yard field goal, but Medlock’s kick was denied after it hit the right upright.

Adams found a passing rhythm down the stretch, but a timely interception from defensive back Jeff Hecht at Winnipeg’s three-yard line put an end to the promising drive.

The Als made things interesting by driving down the field in the final minutes with an 83-yard scoring drive. Adams capped it off with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Posey, and Bede kicked the extra point to make the score 37-31.

A sack from defensive end John Bowman forced a late punt and gave Montreal another chance on offence, and the Als made the most of the opportunity by driving nearly 100 yards for the game-winning score.

Week 16 will see the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats next Friday, while the Montreal Alouettes will face the BC Lions on the road next Saturday.
