NCAAF Opening Line Report: Meaningful Beldam Series highlights Week 10 action

The latest edition of the Bedlam Series has plenty on the line after TCU's loss last week. The Cowboys opened as the slight fave, but early bettors like the Sooners.

No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 12 Oklahoma State (-3)

Both these squads got a reprieve from the governor when Texas Christian lost at Iowa State on Saturday, making the annual Bedlam Game even more meaningful. Oklahoma can certainly relate to TCU, having lost at home to the Cyclones 38-31 four weeks ago as a massive 31-point chalk. Now, the Sooners (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) are back in the CFP mix and coming off a 49-27 win over Texas Tech as a 20.5-point home favorite.

Oklahoma State suffered its lone blemish of the year at home to TCU on Sept. 23. The Cowboys (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) seemed to get their high-octane offense back in order in Week 9, hanging a 50-burger on West Virginia in a 50-39 road win laying 8.5 points.

“The Sooners finally covered, for the first time in their last five games,” Mason said. “Despite their recent covering struggles, 64 percent of the early bettors are on the Sooners and the points. Perhaps that’s because the Sooners are 4-1 straight-up against Oklahoma State in the last five meetings and 12-2 in the last 14.”

No. 23 Louisiana State Tigers at No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-21.5)

Alabama certainly appears poised to reach the College Football Playoff for the fourth straight year – every year it’s been held. The Crimson Tide (8-0 SU, 4-4 ATS) are coming off a bye week, after trampling Tennessee 45-7 as a 36.5-point home fave.

LSU (6-2 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) has won three in a row, cashing the last two times out. The Tigers notched a 27-23 upset of Auburn catching 6.5 points at home in Week 7, followed by a 40-24 road victory over Mississippi giving 6.5 points. LSU also had a bye last week, so both teams will be well-rested.

“It seems like just about every year, we get killed on ‘Bama covering the number versus LSU,” Mason said. “Not only is it always one of the biggest-bet regular-season games of the year, but the public just about always pounds the Tide, who have a four-game covering streak versus the Tigers. It looks like we will need LSU again Saturday night, as 58 percent of early bettors are on ‘Bama.”

The line bounced around a bit in the first couple hours it was up Sunday, getting as high as 22.5 and as low as 20 before settling at 21.5.

No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies at No. 8 Miami Hurricanes (-3.5)

Miami got all it could handle in Week 9, but managed to remain among the ranks of the unbeaten. The Hurricanes (7-0 SU, 3-4 ATS) went to North Carolina as 21-point favorites and escaped with a 24-19 victory.

Virginia Tech (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) has won three in a row, rolling by double digits the past two weeks. The Hokies blasted North Carolina 59-7 laying 20.5 points at home in Week 8, then dropped Duke 24-3 as a 17-point home chalk in Week 9.

“No team on the entire college football betting board is taking on more bets than VaTech. As a matter of fact, there are more bets on the Hokies than Miami, Alabama and Oklahoma combined,” Mason said. “With 79 percent of bettors on Tech so far, it’s no wonder the number quickly moved from Miami -3.5 to -2.5.”

No. 20 Stanford Cardinal at No. 16 Washington State (-2)

Both these teams are in the mix for the Pac-12 championship game, but likely not for the CFP, since each already has two losses. Stanford (6-2 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) nearly had a third setback in a Thursday nighter last week, trailing Oregon State much of the game before a late TD secured a 15-14 win as an 18-point road fave. The Cardinal were without stud running back Bryce Love (ankle).

Washington State has tumbled twice in the last three weeks, and both in embarrassing blowout fashion. Sandwiched around a 28-0 home rout of Colorado, the Cougars (7-2 SU, 5-4 ATS) lost at California 37-3 as a 16-point favorite and at Arizona 58-37 on Saturday in a pick ‘em game.

“Whereas VaTech at Miami is getting the most early action, not many bettors are making their Stanford-at-Washington State plays just yet,” Mason said. “Having been blown out in two out of their last three games, next to no one is betting the Cougars – 88 percent of tickets are on Stanford.”

Cardinal money brought the Cougars down to -1, before the line ticked back up to -1.5.

Bowling Green won its last four games with Kent State, pounding the Golden Flashes 48-0/42-7 the last two years. Underdogs are 5-3 vs spread in last eight series games. BG is 7-1 in its last eight visits to Kent; they’re 1-7 SU this year, including a loss to a I-AA team. Falcons are 1-3 on road, winning only MAC road game, 37-29 (+16) at Miami. Kent is 1-6 vs I-A teams, with all six losses by 14+ points; their only I-A win was also vs Miami. Four of last five Kent games stayed under the total; last three Bowling Green games went over the total.

Ohio won its last four games with Miami, beating Red Hawks 34-3/17-7 last two years; Bobcats are 10-1 in last 11 series games, 3-2 vs spread in last five played in Athens. Miami is 3-5 but was favored in 6 of the 8 games; they’re 1-3 on road, 1-1 as road underdogs, with losses by 35-5-3 points. Under is 4-2 inn their last six games. Stanford Cardinal at Washington State Cougars (-2.5, 55)

Stanford's stout run game vs. WSU's struggles on the ground

All eyes will be on Stanford running back Bryce Love as he continues his march toward the Heisman Trophy as he leads Stanford into Washington State for a date with the Cougars. WSU comes into this one as a slight favorite, but it's the Cardinal who own a significant mismatch when it comes to the teams' respective running games - and if the Cougars can't figure out a way to slow Love down, they could be looking at their third defeat in the past four games.

Love has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Cardinal, racking up an absurd 1,387 rushing yards on just 135 carries - good for a 10.3 YPC average that ranks well ahead of the next-closest running back, Notre Dame's Josh Adams (8.9). Love sat out last weekend's 45-14 rout of Oregon State after tweaking an ankle injury but is expected to return this week. His exploits have Stanford ranked 20th in the nation in rushing yards per game (236.5) despite sitting outside the top 100 in rushes per game (32.9).

Washington State is at the other end of the rushing spectrum. Only Western Kentucky produces fewer rushing yards per game than the Cougars (84.1), who average 3.2 YPC and have a paltry seven touchdowns on the ground so far. In fact, Washington State has generated 1,135 fewer rushing yards than Stanford on only 26 fewer carries. Slowing Love down is the primary task Saturday, but if the Cougars can't do a little more damage on the ground themselves, they could struggle to cover.

Clemson Tigers at NC State Wolfpack (+7.5, 51)

Clemson's red-zone defense vs. NC State's downfield scoring issues

Clemson remains in the national title picture after bouncing back from a stunning loss to Syracuse with a 24-10 triumph over Georgia Tech last weekend. But this week's test against the Wolfpack will go a long way in determining whether the Tigers will be playing in the College Football Playoff, or settling for a lesser bowl berth. On the plus side, Clemson's red zone defense should give the team a pivotal edge against an NC State team that has struggled mightily to take advantage of prime field position.

There are two facets to Clemson's elite red-zone defense: The Tigers haven't let teams get inside their 20-yard line often, and when opponents do get that far downfield, they don't capitalize often. Clemson has allowed just 17 opponent red-zone visits through the first eight games, and teams have scored just seven touchdowns (two rushing, five receiving) on those trips. The Tigers have allowed points on just 76.5 percent of opponent red-zone opportunities, good for 35th in the nation.

The Wolfpack have done plenty of things well so far this season, but converting red-zone visits into points isn't one of them. NC State has scored on just 26 of its 35 visits inside the opposition 20, a 74.3-percent success rate that ranks outside the top 100 nationally. It's the second-worst rate in Division I among teams with 35 or more trips inside the opponent red zone, and doesn't bode well against a Clemson defense that has been one of the best in the country at keeping foes off the scoreboard.

Texas Longhorns at TCU Horned Frogs (-7, 46.5)

Texas' field-goal follies vs. Horned Frogs' kicking prowess

The Longhorns wrap up a gruelling stretch of games against elite Big 12 opponents with a Saturday showdown against the TCU Horned Frogs. Texas lost consecutive games to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State before routing Baylor last weekend. TCU saw its national title hopes dashed with a stunning loss to Iowa State over the weekend, but is in position to bounce back nicely - particularly with such a sizeable advantage in the placekicking game.

The Longhorns' top-40 offense would be even more prolific were it not for some significant kicking struggles. Joshua Rowland has connected on all 31 of his extra-point attempts but is a disastrous 7-for-13 in field-goal kicking so far this season - ahead of only eight qualified Division I kickers. Rowland has misfired on four-of-five attempts from 40-49 yards, and is just 1-for-3 on field-goal kicks between 20 and 29 yards; one of those misses came in the win over the Bears.

The Horned Frogs haven't had to do a lot of field-goal kicking - they've scored 40 touchdowns, after all - but when they do line up for three points, they don't miss. Second-year TCU kicker Jonathan Song is a perfect 7-for-7 in attempts, atoning for the fact that he has missed a pair of extra-point kicks. Song has attempted a field goal in just four of eight games this season, but with this one expected to be a competitive affair, don't be surprised to see TCU exploit its kicking edge against Texas.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Miami Hurricanes (+2.5, 50)

VT's third-down dominance vs. Miami's drive-extension troubles

A spot in the ACC championship game will likely be decided Saturday as the Hokies visit the unbeaten Hurricanes. Miami will lock up the Coastal Division title with a victory, while a Virginia Tech win would all but secure the division for the Hokies. It's a stiff test for both teams, and one that could come down to which team performs better on third down. And if that's the case, the visitors have a decided advantage - one it could very well ride to victory on Saturday.

When opposing teams get to third down against Virginia Tech, they're punting the ball away an overwhelming majority of the time. The Hokies allow first downs or points on just 24 points of opponent third-down opportunities, the third-best rate in Division I. The Hokies held Duke to a 4-of-15 conversion rate in last weekend's 24-3 rout of the Blue Devils, and limited North Carolina to 3-of-17 in a 59-3 evisceration of the Tar Heels the game before that.

The Hurricanes are one of the more well-balanced teams in college football - but if there's a weakness to be found and exploited, it's Miami's struggles on third down. The team has converted just 27 of 88 opportunities through seven games, good for a 30.7-percent success rate that ranks 118th in the nation. With the Hokies possessing one of the stingiest third-down defenses in football, Miami will need to be a lot better at avoiding punts in order to remain undefeated through this weekend.

Colorado beat Arizona State 40-16 LY, their first win in last eight meetings with the Sun Devils; Buffaloes lost their last four visits to Tempe (0-4 vs spread), all by 19+ points. UCLA Bruins at Utah Utes (-6.5, 59)

Once-promising seasons have dissolved into all-out bowl-eligibility fights for UCLA and Utah with both entering November with .500 records. The final four-game stretch run for each begins Friday night as the Utes host the Bruins in Salt Lake City.

Utah has dropped four straight since a 4-0 start, with the last two defeats being blowout losses to Arizona State (30-10) and Oregon (41-20). As a result, the Utes find themselves alone in the Pac-12 South Division basement at 1-4, and coach Kyle Whittingham says his team has reached a true crossroads. “We’re 4-4 with four to go, and we can go one of two directions,” Whittingham said Monday at his weekly news conference. “We can either continue to take our lumps and not play as well as we need to, or we can get back on track and get back to playing the way we know we’re capable of playing.” The sentiment is the same at UCLA as the Bruins have lost four of six since a 2-0 start, including double-digit conference losses to Stanford (58-34), Arizona (47-30) and, most recently, Washington (44-23).

In UCLA’s three Pac-12 defeats, the damage was even worse with Stanford, Arizona and Washington averaging 398.3 ground yards and totaling 14 rushing TDs. UCLA counters with one of the nation’s top quarterbacks in Josh Rosen, who has a 145.8 rating and leads the conference with 339.1 passing yards per game, and senior wide receiver Darren Andrews, who is pacing the Pac-12 with nine TD grabs and ranks third with 88.4 yards per outing.

ABOUT UTAH (4-4 SU, 5-2-1 ATS, 3-5 O/U): The Utes hope to slow Rosen with the Pac-12’s fourth-ranked pass defense (199.1 yards), which has allowed only nine TD passes while totaling 10 interceptions. Dual-threat sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley has played the last two games after sitting out two contests with a shoulder injury, and rebounded from a four-interception outing against Arizona State with 339 total yards of offense, two TDs and no picks in the loss to Oregon. Linebacker Sunia Tauteoli ranks ninth in the Pac-12 with 8.5 tackles for loss, but the Utes are trying to shore up their own run defense after getting gashed for a season-high 347 yards by running back Royce Freeman and Oregon.

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-2, 76)

For the first time in 13 years, the bitter Bedlam rivalry between in-state rivals Oklahoma and Oklahoma State isn't the Big 12 season-ender for the two schools. But Saturday afternoon's contest in Stillwater, which will be the site of ESPN's College GameDay broadcast, has probably as much riding on it as any in recent history.

Both teams enter as part of a four-way tie for first place in the Big 12 and are also in the running for a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff, which had the Sooners rated No. 5 in its first weekly poll released on Tuesday while the Cowboys, who still have a road date next week at No. 15 Iowa State, come in at No. 11.

Then there's quarterbacks Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State, both of whom rank at or near the top of most key NCAA passing stats and could take a big step forward in the Heisman Trophy race with impressive games while also improving their NFL Draft stock.

The loser not only will not have state bragging rights but will also be hard-pressed to rebound and earn one of the two coveted spots in this year's Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Arlington, Tex.

"The timing is different, but the stakes are about as high as they can be," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS, 5-3 O/U): It all starts with the cocky and confident Mayfield who finished third in Heisman voting in 2016 and ranks eighth in the NCAA in passing with 2,628 yards while also leading all Power 5 conference quarterbacks in passing efficiency (195.6), averaging an NCAA-best 11.1 yards per completion. "I love the big stage," Mayfield, who has completed 171-of-236 passes (72.5 percent) for 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions, told reporters this week. "I love a good atmosphere. I think it's a good opportunity to show the country what we're made of." The key for the Sooners, however, could be the play of a defense that has allowed 35 or more points in three of its last five games and ranks 100th nationally in pass efficiency defense (141.4).

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS, 5-3 O/U): Rudolph leads the nation in passing yards (2,866) and passing yards per game (358.3) while throwing 22 touchdown passes to five interceptions. He has a a potential first round NFL pick to throw to in senior wide receiver James Washington who is second in the FBS with an average of 125.6 receiving yards per game while sophomore running back Justice Hill leads the Big 12 in rushing with 836 yards and has scored eight touchdowns. The defense, which has allowed just six passing touchdowns while picking off a Big 12-leading 12 passes, is led by safeties Ramon Richards, who had the game-winning interception in overtime in a 13-10 win at Texas, and Tre Flowers, who has 242 career tackles and is second in the Big 12 with nine passes defended.
