    Conference Title Odds Leans
    August 22, 2017

The Associated Press released its preseason Top 25 on Monday, which for the majority of the college football world, eclipsed even a rare solar event in terms of importance.

Alabama got the nod over Ohio State and Florida State, while USC and defending champion Clemson rounded out the top five. That pecking order will change immediately since the Crimson Tide and Seminoles square off on Sept. 2.

Conference championship odds are also out there courtesy of the Westgate Superbook, which we'll break down here by looking at the favorites and top longshots for the nine top leagues since the Sun Belt and WAC didn't get odds posted.

ACC: It's debatable that this league has surpassed the SEC in terms of quality but they've definitely narrowed the gap and come in housing the reigning national champs and Heisman Trophy winner. Clemson (3/1) and Lamar Jackson-led Louisville (9/2) should be looking up at Florida State (10/11), who will ascend to No. 1 if it pulls off an upset against Alabama in Atlanta. The 'Noles have to win in Death Valley this season and play their annual rivalry game against talented Florida the week before this game, so I don't recommend riding chalk despite how talented a group Jimbo Fisher has assembled in Tallahassee. I'd take a shot with the 'Ville or even Coastal Division favorite Miami (5/1), which returns a fierce-looking defense.

    American:
There's no denying that South Florida (EVEN) is rightfully favored, returning QB Quinton Flowers to lead a loaded offense and Charlie Strong taking over as head coach to work with a defense that returns a lot of veterans from last year's 11-2 squad. The Bulls are likely to host this game too, having a clear edge in the East Division where Houston (5/1), Memphis (5/1), Navy (6/1) and Tulsa (8/1) will all beat up on one another in the West.

Big 12: While I'm not knocking Lincoln Riley and think he'll have a long, successful career as Bob Stoops' successor, I don't foresee immediate success and therefore want no part of Oklahoma (EVEN) despite their favored status here. Oklahoma State (5/2) and Kansas State (7/1) are more attractive options and I wouldn't write off West Virginia (25/1) to pull off a shocker behind new transfer QB Will Grier and Dana Holgorsen giving up play-calling duties with Jake Spavital at the controls of a potentially potent offense. The expectation here is that the OSU Cowboys will prevail in the inaugural league championship game that is scheduled to be played at AT&T Stadium on Dec. 2.

    Big Ten:
This league is definitely top-heavy this season and can be carved into tiers. Ohio State (5/7), Wisconsin (5/2), Penn State (5/1) and Michigan (7/1) all have such an edge in terms of collective talent that it's impossible to look elsewhere for a true long shot. J.T. Barrett had a dreadful Fiesta Bowl in national semifinal loss to Clemson but is a proven winner who will likely close out his career with a Big Ten title. If you're looking for a bigger pay day, I'd ride the Nittany Lions, who beat the Buckeyes last year and are loaded on both sides of the ball, paced by the nation's top running back, Saquon Barkley.

C-USA: Lane Kiffin is getting some immediate respect since Florida Atlantic (12/1) has gone 3-9 in three straight seasons and would normally join rival FIU (50/1) as a major longshot. Adding transfer QB De'Andre Johnson of Last Chance U. fame gives the Owls one of the top playmakers in the conference, which could be up for grabs since favored Western Kentucky (5/7) lost head coach Jeff Brohm to Purdue. Mike Sanford Jr. takes over and returns a ton of talent, but I'd chase a bigger pay day via Middle Tennessee (5/1) or the aforementioned FAU Owls. Blue Raiders QB Brent Stockstill will put up cartoonish numbers in his dad's offense.

MAC: PJ Fleck coached Western Michigan (6/1) to an unbeaten run last season that included a win over Ohio in the championship game, but he's now coaching at Minnesota. The Broncos should still be a threat, but the smart money is indeed on favored Toledo (10/11), which returns the conference's top QB in senior Logan Woodside. I wouldn't mess around and fade the Rockets, who are likely to have a similar run through league play as WMU enjoyed last year. If you're looking for more of a gamble, go with Western or Miami of Ohio (9/2).

Mountain West: Perennial favorite Boise State (6/5) is the chalk to reclaim their spot atop the MWC after stumbling in each of the past few years following its dominant run. It's undeniable that San Diego State (8/5) has replaced them as the class of this league, but this is a good year to take a shot at one of the two up-and-comers, Colorado State (4/1) and Wyoming (7/1). Cowboys QB Josh Allen is the best player in the conference and Craig Bohl enters his fourth year at the helm of the program and will likely be coming to a major conference near you following this season. Of course, the same could be said about Mike Bobo, who has put together a pair of 7-6 years but always has the Rams playing their best football late. My choice backs the Cowboys to make for a memorable year in Laramie.

Pac-12: Although USC (10/11) is rightfully favored, there's tremendous value in riding with Washington (9/5) now that Chris Petersen has the ball rolling in Seattle. They cruised to last year's conference championship with a 41-10 rout of surprising Colorado (40/1) and have a ton of talent back, avoid the Trojans on the schedule and close with a tough five-game stretch where they'll be challenged, but get to play four of them at home. Huskies QB Jake Browning needs to take the next step in his progression but could end up having a more effective season than USC's Sam Darnold. Utah (40/1) is enticing if you want a dramatic longshot to back.

    SEC:
Mighty Alabama (4/9) is favored to win a fourth consecutive conference championship, which is no surprise given how dominant they've been in beating Missouri and Florida twice, posting a cumulative scoring edge of 125-44. The only time over the past five years that Nick Saban's Crimson Tide failed to win an SEC title came in 2013 after losing the Iron Bowl to Auburn (6/1), which has to be considered the top longshot to back since the SEC West is again the class of the conference and the Tigers get to host Georgia and 'Bama in November, giving them a chance to control their destiny if they're playing their best football at that time. LSU (6/1) looks more like potential spoiler than title contender to me. The Florida Gators (12/1) would be my choice for an East Division team to back since I like their depth better than Georgia (8/1).

      ACC Report - Week 1
      August 27, 2017

      2016 ACC STANDINGS

      Wake Forest 7-6 3-5 8-5 6-7

Boston College at Northern Illinois (Fri. - CBS Sports Network, 9:30 p.m. ET)
The Eagles hit the road for DeKalb, Ill. to meet the Huskies of NIU, a team looking to bounce back from a disappointing 5-7 record. It was the first losing season for Northern Illinois, normally a powerhouse in the MAC, since 2007. They also had their streak of eight streak seasons in a bowl game snapped, so they'll be champing at the bit looking to fire out of the gate against a Power 5 representative. Boston College looks to pick up where they left off last season, as they rebounded nicely in 2016 with two wins down the stretch to go bowling, eventually beating former ACC member Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl. redshirt freshman Anthony Brown might be the answer at quarterback, as the Eagles look for excitement. Jon Hilliman and Davon Jones will tote the mail more often than not, with true freshman A.J. Dillon a potential star-in-the-making. B.C. already has one win under its belt, as they beat out Michigan for Dillon's services just before National Signing Day. DE Harold Landry, and his nation-leading 16 1/2 sacks, will be back to terrorize the NIU backfield.

Kent State at Clemson (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)
The defending national champion Tigers welcome Kent State to the upstate, and this could be ugly early out of the gates. Many have the Golden Flashes predicted to finish last in the MAC East, as head coach Paul Haynes' seat is getting awfully toasty. Clemson opened as 40-point favorites, bet down slightly. That number should fluctuate even more before the opening kick. The Tigers were 3-4 ATS last season as a 20-plus-point favorite last season, although they did cover a 53 1/2-point number against South Carolina State. However, their first home game (second overall) was a sluggish 30-24 win against Troy, so might be see another stumble out of the gate before

California at North Carolina (ACC Network, 12:20 p.m. ET)
The Tar Heels open as 12 1/2-point favorite against the visiting Bears. California hasn't had a lot of luck, failing to cover over their past four road games. However, Cal has had some luck in their past non-conference tilts, covering five of the past seven. The Golden Bears have to replace QB Davis Webb, and that will be their biggest question mark. Will either Ross Bowers or Chase Forrest be ready, especially after a cross-country flight, playing on the road in hostile territory in their first-ever start? New O.C. Beau Baldwin, formerly head coach of high-flying FCS program Eastern Washington, will make this offense fun, but it might take time. UNC also must replace QB Mitch Trubisky, a big hole, as well as stud TBs Elijah Hood, T.J. Logan, WRs Bug Howard and Ryan Switzer, as well as three offensive linemen. The defense will be fine with six starters back, but there are a ton of question marks on offense.

North Carolina State vs. South Carolina from Charlotte, NC (ESPN, 3:00 p.m.)
The Wolfpack and Gamecocks will do battle at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. BOA was a nice place to start in 2015, as the 'Cocks topped UNC 17-13 before their season unraveled. With a short jaunt up Interstate 77 from Columbia, you can expect a pro-South Carolina crowd despite the game being played behind enemy lines. South Carolina has covered four straight neutral-site games, while N.C. State is equally impressive with a 7-3-1 ATS mark over their past 11 such situations. And the Wolfpack has posted a glamorous 11-2 ATS mark over their past 13 non-conference tilts, although this is a step up from the Old Dominions, Presbyterians and South Alabamas of the world. Ryan Finley is back to lead the offense, and the dynamic Jaylen Samuels has the chance to be one of the best players in the league.

Louisville vs. Purdue from Indianapolis, IN (FOX, 7:30 p.m.)

The Cardinals return Heisman Trophy QB Lamar Jackson, and that already makes them a team to watch. However, they'll have their hands full trying to supplant Clemson, and perhaps even Florida State, at the top of the ACC, although the Cards certainly handled the 'Noles easily last season. The Cardinals ripped off 42.5 points per game (PPG) last season, but they'll be missing key cogs with RB Brandon Radcliff, WRs James Quick and Jamari Staples, as well as TE Cole Hikutini, all having moved on. Jaylen Smith could be the player ready to step up and be the next offensive star, and a quick start against a Purdue squad picked to finish at or near the bottom of the West Division in the Big Ten. Louisville opened as 24 1/2-point favorites and that number has been on the rise. Purdue doesn't really seem to have the guns to get into a track meet at Lucas Oil Stadium with what should be a much speedier Cardinals offense, even with some new parts.

Florida State vs. Alabama from Atlanta, GA (ABC, 8:00 p.m.)

The Crimson Tide and Seminoles will be the gem of the opening weekend, doing battle in the brand spanking news Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Tide are favored by a touchdown to roll on the Seminoles, who are looking to bounce back from a subpar season by their standards, if you can call 10 wins subpar. FSU finished strong, winning five straight and covering four in a row, but they were a dismal 5-3 SU through eight games with a blowout loss in Louisville (63-20), as well as setbacks on their home turf to Clemson and UNC. The 'Noles would like a signature win against a high-profile Tide team, boosting their stock immediately. However, FSU will need to find a workhorse to replace Dalvin Cook, and that will not be easy. QB Jalen Hurts is back for the Tide, and he should be even better after a big season, although he occasionally would look like a freshman, too. The mistakes should be even fewer, and that's not good for the rest of the nation. The 'over' might be the way to go, as it is 20-6-1 in Alabama's past 27 neutral-site games and 4-0-1 in their past five vs. ACC foes. The over has hit in six straight neutral-site battles for FSU, while going4-1 in their past five non-conference affairs.

West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech from Landover, MD (Sun. - ABC, 7:30 p.m.)
Unless you're alumni, or from the Appalachia region, this game doesn't have as much meaning. But, ahh, you'll watch because it's football, and, well, it's football. The Mountaineers of the Big 12 head to suburban D.C. looking to shine their star a bit. They haven't fared well against the number in big games in recent times, going 6-15 ATS in their past 21 against ACC foes, 1-4 ATS in their past five non-conference battles and 0-4 ATS in their past four on a neutral field. On the flip side, Virginia Tech is tabbed to contend for the Coastal Division in the ACC, and another 10-win season could easily be within reach. The 'over' has hit in four of the past five for West Virginia on a neutral field, whilegoing 5-1-1 in Virginia Tech's past seven in such situations. Therefore an offensive feast might be on tap. Virginia Tech has hit the over in 13 of their past 16 outside of the ACC, too.

Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech from Atlanta, GA (Mon. - ESPN, 8:00 p.m.)
The Volunteers will head down Interstate 75 and into enemy territory to face the Yellow Jackets. While technically not a home game, the game is in Atlanta and will be a pro-Ramblin' Wreck crowd, although plenty of burnt orange will be on hand, too. The Vols are favored, even so slightly, in a game with a line bouncing between 3 1/2 and 6. The Vols have been great in their recent neutral-site contests, going a perfect 6-0 ATS in the past six tries. Ga. Tech has been very good, too, going 3-0-1 ATS in their past four on a neutral field, while hitting a perfect 4-for-4 in their past four outside of the conference. Tennessee will be christening a new quarterback, and Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano should both see some snaps. They will find a rather inexperienced, yet potential explosive wideout corps facing down against a decent Yellow Jackets secondary. With inexperience on the offensive side of the ball, and a strong Georgia Tech run game and questionable QB play on their end, too, a low-scoring game might be in the offing.

      Other Games
Presbyterian at Wake Forest (Thu. - 6:30 p.m., ACC Network)
Central Conn. at Syracuse (Fri. - 7:00 p.m., ACC Network)
Bethune-Cook. at Miami, FL (ACC Network, 12:30 p.m.)
Youngstown St. at Pittsburgh (ACC Network, 1:00 p.m.)
William & Mary at Virginia (ACC Network, 3:30 p.m.)
North Carolina Central at Duke (ACC Network, 6:00 p.m.)

        Big 12 Report - Week 1
        August 27, 2017

        2016 BIG 12 STANDINGS

        West Virginia 10-3 7-2 5-8 5-8

Tulsa at Oklahoma State (Thurs. - FOX Sports 1, 7:30 p.m. ET)

Originally set for Saturday, this contest will now kick off on Thursday night in Stillwater. These Sooner State universities have met frequently on the gridiron, with Oklahoma State holding a 39-28-5 all-time series lead. This will be the third-ever meeting to open a new season, however. The offense has been prolific in Tulsa for most of Philip Montgomery's tenure, but the Golden Hurricane must replace some big guns. QB Dane Evans expired his eligibility and top WRs Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson are gone. QBs Chad President and Luke Skipper look to fill the void under center. For the first time in a while, the running backs spot appears to be the strength of Tulsa. For OK State, they need no reinforcements on offense, as QB Mason Rudolph is back with his cadre of high-flying receivers, led by James Washington. The difference in this game from the outset will be OK State's defensive line pressure againt an untested QB.

Maryland at Texas (FOX Sports 1, 12:00 p.m.)

If not for Rutgers, Maryland would be battling Indiana to avoid the cellar in the East Division in the Big Ten Conference. For Texas, it's a brand new day with Tom Herman taking the reins after Charlie Strong was relieved of his duties. Big things are expected of the Longhorns in 2017, but when isn't that the case in football-crazy Texas? In recent season the Terrapins of UMD have struggled, wrapping up their 2016 campaign 1-5 ATS over their final six games while going a dismal 0-6 ATS over the past six on the road. They're also 1-4 ATS in their past five outings outside of the conference. For Texas, they've been a tough out in Austin, at least against the number lately, going 7-3 ATS over their past 10 outings. However, they've covered just one of their past five showings against the Big Ten. In terms of non-conference games and the total, the 'under' is 4-1-1 in the past six for the Terps, while the 'over' is 4-1 across the past six the the burnt orange.

Texas-El Paso at Oklahoma (FOX, 3:30 p.m. ET)

This game isn't terribly attractive if you want to see a good game, as Oklahoma opened as a 48-point favorite. It has been bet down into the 44-45 point range, but it is still expected to be a blood bath. Still, plenty of eyes will be on Norman as Lincoln Riley coaches his first game for Boomer Sooner. Oklahoma failed to cover last season against Louisiana-Monroe as a 46-point favorite in a cupcake matchup in mid-September, and they're 4-1 SU/2-3 ATS over their past five season openers, too, including a straight-up loss to Houston last season. The Miners showed some improvement down the stretch, winning three of their final six games. But they have a long way to go before they're remotely close to Oklahoma in terms of talent. Still, they might give the Sooners a better game than the likes of Kansas.

Eastern Washington at Texas Tech (No national TV, 4:00 p.m. ET)

If you like offense, this could be the game for you. Eastern Washington might be an FCS team, but they're the national champs of that level from 2010, and they have been a giant killer -- or at least a giant scarer -- in recent seasons. They won at Washington State, 45-42, to open their season in 2016, and put up 42 against a good Oregon squad in a loss back in 2015. They also gave Washington a run for its money, 59-52, back in 2014, while knocking off No. 25 Oregon State to open the 2013 campaign in Corvallis. So don't expect the Eagles to be intimidated, or outscored by much. A win over Texas Tech could turn up the temperature on the hot seat of head coach Kliff Kingsbury to intense heat. Offense is never a problem in Lubbock, and QB Nic Shimonek is the next great, taking over for the departed Patrick Mahomes. But defense needs to improve quickly after allowing 43.5 points per game, or it's going to be another disappointing season.

        Other Games
Liberty at Baylor (Kickoff time still TBD)
Southeast Missouri State at Kansas (No national TV, 7:00 p.m.)
Central Arkansas at Kansas State (No national TV, 7:10 p.m.)
Northern Iowa at Iowa State (No national TV, 8:00 p.m.)
Jackson State at Texas Christian (FOX, 8:00 p.m.)

Oregon State at Colorado State (Sat., Aug. 26 - CBS Sports Network, 2:30 p.m. ET)
The Beavers hit the road for Fort Collins to clash with the Rams in the first game on the 2017 College Football regular season schedule, and first game at CSU's brand spanking new facility. Oregon State didn't have the greatest of seasons last year, but they did finish with seven covers across their final eight outings while winning their final two games straight up. However, they were blanked in five tries on the road in 2016, going 3-2 ATS, and they're 0-13 SU/4-9 ATS across their past 13 trips since their last road win in Colorado on Oct. 4, 2014. Colorado State made a bowl appearance last season, losing 61-50 in a shootout. That was par for the course, as they scored 37 or more points in each of their final six games while covering the last seven games of the regular season, and 10 of 11. Oregon State will turn to QB Jake Luton, a JUCO transfer, to try and turn around one of the worst passing offenses among Power 5 Conference members. Final - Colorado State 58 Oregon State 27

Stanford at Rice from Sydney, Australia (Sat., Aug. 26 - ESPN, 10:00 p.m. ET)

Stanford and Rice will do battle down under, and Aussies might be treated to a beatdown. The Cardinal are favored by 31 points. It was a strange season for the Cardina. They still ended up with 10 wins, but it was disappointing by their standards. That shows how high the bar has been set in Palo Alto. They were humbled 44-6 in Washington Sept. 30, 2016, and belted 42-16 by Washington State at home. On Oct. 22, they were 4-3 SU/ATS through seven games and people wondered aloud if mediocrity was back in the Bay Area. But the Cardinal ripped off six wins, including their bowl game, to get to 10 wins. They lost Christian McCaffrey to the NFL, but they should be just fine going into 2017. Stanford is just 2-3 ATS over their past five regular season openers, and they lost straight-up at Northwestern the last time they opened somewhere outside of Palo Alto. They topped the Owls 41-17 to close the regular season last year, and the Cardinal are replacing key personnel. Will it be enough for the Owls to stay within the number? Final - Stanford 62 Rice 7
New Mexico State at Arizona State (Thurs., Aug. 31 - Pac-12 Network, 10:30 p.m. ET)
The Sun Devils open with the Aggies, who are barely an FBS team. The Aggies have posted three or fewer wins in five consecutive seasons, and they haven't had a winning campaign since the 2002 season. Arizona State isn't used to losing seasons, but that's what they experienced last year when they lost to rival Arizona in the finale to miss a bowl bid. Arizona State is favored to win by more than three touchdowns in their opener, and they're 8-1 ATS over the past nine outings. Conversely, NMSU is 9-19 ATS over the past 28 road battles. A high-scoring game could be on tap, as the 'over' is 21-5-1 in the past 27 road outings for the Aggies, and the Sun Devils hit the over in four of their past five home contests.

Colorado State at Colorado from Denver, Colo. (Fri., Sept. 1 - Pac-12 Network, 8:00 p.m. ET)
The Rams will already have a game under its belt when they invade Sports Authority Field in Denver for their rivalry game with the Buffaloes. Colorado had a great season in 2016, rising back to prominence after many awful and trying seasons since joining the Pac-12. The Rams enter the season 14-4-1 ATS over their past 19 non-conference games, but they're 0-4-1 in their past five neutral-site battles. The Buffaloes are 1-3-1 ATS in their past five on a neutral-site field. Total bettors might be especially interested in this rivalry game, as the 'under' has hit in eight of the past nine games. The underdog is also 3-1-1 ATS in the past five meetings in this series.

Washington at Rutgers (Fri., Sept. 1 - FOX Sports 1, 8:00 p.m. ET)

The Huskies made the four-team playoff last season, but they were bounced by a much more superior Alabama team. Washington looks to climb the mountain again, hoping to take that next step forward. They can start climbing that mountain with a convincing win against Rutgers in a cross-country trip to open the season. The Huskies waffled the Scarlet Knights by a 48-13 count to open the 2016 season, covering a 25-point number. Washington's roster is littered with stars again, and they return 13 starters. QB Jake Browning and RB Myles Gaskin are back, as is LB Azeem Victor along with the league's best front seven. That's bad news for a Rutgers team that is barely competitive against bottom-tier FBS teams.

Western Michigan at Southern California (Sat., Sept. 2 - Pac-12 Network, 5:15 p.m. ET)

The Trojans look for a quick start, and they have one of the most dangerous weapons in the country in QB Sam Darnold. It's a tough opener against a Western Michigan team which posted 13 regular-season victories before playing Wisconsin tough in the Cotton Bowl, covering in a 24-16 loss. With success of a mid-level program, losses are harder to overcome. Head coach P.J. Fleck left for Minnesota and WR Corey Davis is now playing his football for the Tennessee Titans. However, they still have a strong pass rush to give Darnold a much bigger test than some other top QBs who will be opening with cupcakes. USC opened as a 24-point favorite, and bettors are now expecting them to win by nearly four touchdowns. While USC is expected to be a playoff contender, Western Michigan is coming off a New Year's Day bowl and will not be a pushover.

          Texas A&M at UCLA (Sun., Sept. 3 - FOX, 7:30 p.m. ET)

In one of the final games of the opening weekend, Texas A&M invades the Rose Bowl to battle UCLA. While a lot of the national media focuses on cross-town rival USC's QB, the Bruins have a good one of their own in Josh Rosen. He is making his way back from a shoulder injury which derailed his season early on. He is healthy, and if the team's offensive line play is better he has a chance to lead this team to big things. The Aggies have promise at QB, but it's uncertain if we'll see Jake Hubenek, Kellen Mond or Nick Starkel - or all three - in the opener. Both teams have struggled in non-conference games lately, with A&M 2-6 ATS in their past eight and UCLA 0-5 ATS in their past five outside of the conferences.

          Other Games
North Dakota at Utah (Thu., Aug. 31 - Pac-12 Network, 7:30 p.m. ET)
Portland State at Oregon State (Sat., Sept. 2 - Pac-12 Network, 2:00 p.m. ET)
Southern Utah at Oregon (Sat., Sept. 2 - Pac-12 Network, 8:15 p.m. ET)
Montana State at Washington State (Sat., Sept. 2, FOX Sports 1, 10:30 p.m. ET)
Northern Arizona at Arizona (Sat., Sept. 2, Pac-12 Network, 11:00 p.m. ET)

            Monday’s six-pack

            — Twins 7, Blue Jays 2— Byron Buxton hit three homers for Minnesota.

            — Phillies 6, Cubs 3— Rhys Hoskins has 11 HRs in his last 52 at-bats.

            — Vikings 32, 49ers 31— Minnesota’s 1st team didn’t look too good.

            — Dustin Johnson beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff to win the Northern Trust Open.

            — Rookie QB DeShone Kizer will start in Week 1 for the Browns. He was 6-18 passing in Cleveland’s game against the Bucs Saturday night.

            — If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
AL: Boston-Cleveland-Houston. Wild Cards: New York/Minnesota
NL: Washington-Chicago-Los Angeles. Wild Cards: Arizona/Colorado

            ****************************

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

            13) Houston is the 4th-largest city in America; they got 24.3 inches of rain in a 24-hour period this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

LSU-BYU are scheduled to play in Houston next weekend, which seems highly unlikely, with a switch to Baton Rouge the most probably alternative.

Along same lines, Astros will fly to Dallas after today’s game; they’re supposed to host Texas at home Tuesday, but you’d think those games would be switched to Arlington.

            12) In 2005, Houston became a second home to a lot of people when Hurricane Katrina pounded New Orleans; now a lot of Houstonians will probably migrate somewhere else. It is very sad that people’s lives get turned upside down by an act of Mother Nature.

            11) Dodgers are now 19-1-3 in their last 23 series; before losing 2 of 3 at home to Milwaukee this weekend, the last one they lost was June 5-7 vs Washington.

            10) Reds’ 2B Scooter Gennett has three grand slams in 10 AB’s with bases loaded this year.

            9) Last year, Patriots WR Julian Edelman was targeted by Tom Brady 38 times on 3rd down, which was more than the next three Patriots combined- Hogan (11), Amendola (11) and Mitchell (10). Now Edelman is out for the season- who will step up and take his place?

            8) Hawai’i 38, UMass 35— Rainbows trailed 28-14 in third quarter, scored TD with 0:48 left to make the very long trip home a happy one.

            7) New York 10, Seattle 1— Mariners made five errors IN THE FIRST INNING!!! Saturday nights in New York City can be very draining.

Last time a major league team made five errors in one inning? 1977 Cubs.

            6) Indians 12, Royals 0— Cleveland led this game 12-0 in the second inning. Oy.

Royals have gone 34 consecutive innings without scoring a run.

            5) NFL injury stuff:
            — Bears WR Cameron Meredith hurt his knee Sunday, big loss for Chicago— he looked like an up-and-coming star.
            — Bears also lost long snapper Patrick Scales (knee).
            — Jets’ QB Bryce Petty sprained his MCL, hopes to play in the last preseason game.

            4) New Orleans Pelicans lose starting forward Solomon Hill to a torn hamstring- he could miss most of the coming NBA season.

            3) Pirates 5, Reds 2— Joey Votto batted five times and walked all five times; his on-base % is .447. Billy Hamilton bats leadoff for the Reds; his on-base % is .296. Why doesn’t Votto bat leadoff?

            2) Marlins 6, Padres 2— Giancarlo Stanton’s 50th home run of the year put Miami ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Marlins are very hot right now.

            DL happenings……..
            — Royals put P Danny Duffy (elbow) on the DL
            — Tigers put DH Victor Martinez (irregular heartbeat) on the DL.
            — Cardinals put IF Jedd Gyorko (hamstring) on the DL.

QB competition may continue through game week for UNC
                    August 28, 2017

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina coach Larry Fedora still isn't ready to pick a starting quarterback.

The Tar Heels on Monday released the depth chart for this week's opener against California, but it didn't answer many of the questions that lingered through preseason camp.

LSU graduate transfer Brandon Harris , redshirt freshman Chazz Surratt and sophomore Nathan Elliott were each separated by ''or'' on the depth chart. Fedora says he has ''no update'' on the position and adds he might not select a starter until gameday.

He says the competition has been extended ''just because nobody has separated themselves.''

Also of note, left guard Khaliel Rodgers, who said earlier this month that he was quitting football, has returned to the team and was listed as the backup to Nick Polino.

Wisconsin takes hit at LB; Baun out
                    August 27, 2017

MADISON, Wis. (AP) No. 9 Wisconsin has lost another linebacker with sophomore Zack Baun out for the year with a left foot injury.

Baun was expected to be a key contributor at outside linebacker behind starters Garret Dooley and Leon Jacobs. The Badgers were already replacing last year's starters on the outside, T.J. Watt and Vince Biegel, who are now in the NFL.

Wisconsin also lost its top defensive player for the season when inside linebacker Jack Cichy went down with a knee injury two weeks into camp.

Ryan Connelly was listed as the starter ahead of Chris Orr to replace Cichy on the depth chart released Sunday ahead of the season opener on Friday night against Utah State.

Also, the Badgers still haven't named a starter at running back. Sophomore Bradrick Shaw, junior Chris James and freshman Jonathan Taylor are in the mix.

No. 17 Florida suspends WR Robinson for game vs Michigan
                    August 28, 2017

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Florida has an eighth player suspended for its season opener against Michigan.

Coach Jim McElwain said Monday that receiver James Robinson, who was cited for marijuana possession last week, won't play against the Wolverines.

McElwain said ''of course not'' when asked whether Robinson would be available Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

Robinson and linebacker Ventrell Miller, both freshmen from Lakeland, were cited for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana Aug. 21. According to university police, Robinson and Miller were found with the drugs at their dormitory after a smell of marijuana emanated from their room. Both were given a notice to appear in court next month.

Miller is one of seven players under indefinite suspension for misusing university funds. Robinson was cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession during his official visit to Ohio State in January.

Iowa lists Nathan Stanley as QB for opener vs. Wyoming
                    August 28, 2017

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Iowa quarterback Nathan Stanley has been listed as the starter for Saturday's opener against Wyoming.

Stanley, a sophomore, spent the offseason competing with junior Tyler Wiegers for the opening left by C.J. Beathard's graduation.

Stanley was 5 of 9 passing in 2016 as a true freshman - the first newcomer to play for Iowa at quarterback since Drew Tate in 2003. Nevada transfer James Butler also cracked Monday's new depth chart. He'll back up Akrum Wadley, who has added kick returns to his responsibilities.

Many players on No. 25 Tennessee continue family tradition
                    August 28, 2017

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee safety Todd Kelly Jr. remembers how he often played the video highlights of his father's senior season with the Volunteers.

He'd see some of his dad's memorable moments during a career that included 22 + sacks, two SEC championships and a Sugar Bowl victory. He'd watch that tape over and over again until technology caught up with him.

''I can't watch it anymore because the DVD players can't play a VHS tape,'' said Kelly, whose dad Todd Kelly Sr. was a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelly is just one of the Vols continuing a family tradition by playing at Tennessee.

Safety/kick returner Evan Berry and linebacker Elliott Berry are the younger brothers of 2009 Jim Thorpe Award winner Eric Berry. The trio are the sons of former running back James Berry, who played for Tennessee from 1978-81.

Defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie's father is now Oakland Raiders general manager and former Vols linebacker Reggie McKenzie and his uncle is former Vols and NFL offensive lineman Raleigh McKenzie.

Safety Nigel Warrior's dad is former Tennessee cornerback Dale Carter, who also played in the NFL. Linebacker Dillon Bates' father is former Tennessee and Dallas Cowboys safety Bill Bates.

Tennessee's family ties could have been even greater. The Vols recruited Clemson freshman wide receiver Amari Rodgers, whose father is Tee Martin, the quarterback of Tennessee's 1998 national championship team. Rodgers instead verbally committed to Southern California - where his dad's an assistant coach - before signing with the reigning national champions

''Growing up in a football household, (they) can never forget how their fathers got there by being driven, hard work and all that,'' Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. ''That helps. Obviously it's a great sounding board, a great resource for their sons to have that resource. It's also a matter of pride as well.''

Indeed, family connections assure the latest generation knows only too well the high expectations here. Kelly Jr. grew up in Knoxville and watched plenty of Tennessee games at Neyland Stadium while growing up.

''Just knowing how important it is to these fans, the community and people around Knoxville, Tennessee (and the area code) 865,'' said Kelly Jr., who led the Vols in tackles last season. ''It's all about Tennessee football.''

The current Vols are trying to get Tennessee back to the status enjoyed when some of their fathers or siblings played here.

Todd Kelly Sr. and Carter were teammates on the 1990 SEC championship team that won the Sugar Bowl. Eric Berry was a freshman in 2007, the last time Tennessee reached an SEC championship game.

Evan and Elliott Berry were teenagers during their older brother's playing career and now can watch him play with the Kansas City Chiefs every Sunday. The twins insist they don't feel any extra pressure to live up to the family name.

''It's just that we have family members who were fortunate enough to play here, and we're fortunate enough to play here as well,'' said Evan Berry, who was the nation's top-ranked kick returner in 2015. ''I look at it as something good. Not really anything bad comes out of it.''

The ex-Vols have tried to avoid heaping extra pressure on their kids.

Kelly Sr. points to their respective academic achievements as evidence that his son already has accomplished more than he did at Tennessee. Kelly Jr., a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, majors in biological science with concentrations in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology. The senior safety is interested in going to medical school and becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

''At the end of the day, I tell TK don't worry about being my son,'' Kelly Sr. said. ''You go out there and create your own legacy, go out there and compete and do things in the community and make sure if someone asks about Todd Kelly Jr., they're going to talk about your character first and not what type of football player you are.''

Kelly, the Berry twins and Bates came to Tennessee in 2014 as part of a heralded recruiting haul nicknamed the ''legacy class'' because so many prospects had family ties to the program.

The group has helped Tennessee win bowl games each of the last three seasons, but they haven't reached the SEC championship game. That provides plenty of incentives heading into the 25th-ranked Vols' Sept. 4 season opener with Georgia Tech.

''We obviously have big expectations, just like every year,'' Evan Berry said. ''Anything short of a national championship isn't enough. It's not enough - or I'm not satisfied with it.''

No. 8 Washington without LB Azeem Victor vs. Rutgers
                      August 28, 2017

SEATTLE (AP) Just like the rest of his team, Washington linebacker Azeem Victor was about to embark on a season of heightened expectations, partly the result of being named a preseason AP All-American.

Now Victor's season will start a week later than the rest of his teammates'.

Victor was suspended one game for a violation of team rules, Washington coach Chris Petersen announced Monday. He will be at home in Seattle when the No. 8 Huskies open the season on Friday at Rutgers.

Petersen did not specify the violation that led to the suspension for Victor, who was coming off a junior season that was shortened due to a broken leg suffered late last season against Southern California.

''Guys make mistakes. Nobody is perfect,'' Petersen said. ''It's a mistake. The hard thing is you're in a public eye. It's tough. Azeem is a good guy, he is, but guys make mistakes and we have team standards and we live by them.''

Victor missed the final four games of last season after breaking his leg in Washington's only regular-season loss. He was a spectator as the Huskies won the Pac-12 North and beat Colorado in the Pac-12 championship game before losing to Alabama in the national semifinals.

Victor is fully recovered and expected to team with Keishawn Bierria to form one of the best linebacker duos in the country.

Victor is one of two potential defensive starters who will miss the opener. Cornerback Austin Joyner, in the competition to start in the secondary, was suspended two games for a violation of team rules. Joyner, a sophomore who appeared in 12 games last season, will sit against Rutgers and for the home opener on Sept. 9 against Montana.

A depleted secondary is an area of concern for Washington, which saw Sidney Jones, Budda Baker and Kevin King taken in the first two rounds of the NFL draft last spring. Joyner was in the mix to start along with Byron Murphy, Elijah Molden, Jordan Miller and Myles Bryant.

''The depth is not the issue. Experience. We'll get that,'' Petersen said. ''Those kids are working hard and they're getting better every day and every week. We get to that point where you have to go out there and see what we've got. But I'm excited to watch those guys compete.''

The Huskies enter the season under a different microscope coming off their national semifinal appearance. They're the clear favorites in the Pac-12 North and no one would be surprised if they find themselves back in the discussion for a College Football Playoff spot come the end of the regular season.

Last year, the Huskies were all about potential and they more than lived up to it. The expectations this year are to be an elite program from the start, as much as Petersen tries to block it out.

''This is the honest-to-God's truth: We kind of live in a bubble here,'' Petersen said. ''I don't know a lot of stuff that's being said. We pay attention to some things, or I get word of some things if it's a big thing, but I don't really know. We just kind of go about our business and I really want our kids to think that way as well. So I really haven't been surprised by anything because we're just back building a new team up.''

NOTES: Petersen announced that reserve TE David Ajamu is out for the season after having surgery to repair a broken leg. Ajamu also lost his apartment recently in a fire. ''There's some stuff that we can do as coaches and everything we're clearing through compliance and we're helping him as much as we can,'' Petersen said. ... The Huskies will leave Wednesday for Friday's game. The team plans to tour the 9/11 Memorial in New York as part of the trip. ''I think it is really important that we all do that. I am excited about that. I think this team, and this program, is mature enough to do that,'' Petersen said.

Huskers' QB Tanner Lee challenged to turn hype into reality
                      August 28, 2017

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Tanner Lee hasn't taken a snap in a game for Nebraska, yet the fan base has already deemed him the quarterback who can return the Cornhuskers to national relevance.

The hype has been fueled by the words of a couple former NFL personnel men, one of whom predicted the transfer from Tulane would be a top NFL draft prospect.

Lee's statistics in his two years with the Green Wave, however, would not indicate immediate success in the Big Ten.

Coach Mike Riley on Monday cautioned against putting too heavy a load on the junior from New Orleans.

"I don't want to be that guy that says, 'Give the ball to the quarterback and go win the game for us,'" Riley said. "It's going to take our team. Our line has to do a great job, our running game has to be good, receivers have to make plays. All the parts have to work together for the quarterback to be good. This isn't going to be just about how he plays. It's going to be how all those parts around him play."

Lee was the scout team's most valuable player on offense during his transfer year, and beat out Patrick O'Brien for the starter's job in spring practice. He's earned good reviews for his work through practices leading to the Huskers' opener against Arkansas State on Saturday night.

"I'm extremely ready, extremely excited," Lee said. "It's been a long time since I've been out there in live action. I miss that. Just thinking back on where I was when I ended my career at Tulane and not knowing where I was going to be, and to be in the position I'm in now, I feel extremely humbled and lucky and blessed for that."

Lee was a two-star prospect coming out of high school and redshirted his first year at Tulane. He started 19 games over two seasons, completed 54 percent of his passes and threw for 23 touchdowns against 21 interceptions. Curtis Johnson was fired after the 2015 season, and Lee was not a fit for new coach Willie Fritz spread-option offense.

Nebraska welcomed Lee. Former NFL general manager Billy Devaney, the Huskers' executive director of player personnel, had heard about him from Archie Manning, the former New Orleans Saints QB, father of Peyton and Eli and executive director of the Manning Passing Academy.

Devaney said in February that Archie told him after the 2015 session of the academy that Lee outperformed California's Jared Goff, who went on to become the 2016 No. 1 overall draft pick.

"We have a boy here that put him to shame," Devaney quoted Archie as saying. "There is a boy down at Tulane named Tanner Lee. I said, 'You've got to be kidding me.' I know how Goff throws, and you are saying Tanner Lee throws the ball better? Archie said, 'There was no comparison. You have to keep your eye on this boy from Tulane.' "

More praise was heaped on Lee earlier this month by Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage, who tweeted, "After seeing ... QB Tanner Lee spin it yesterday, he will be a top NFL prospect for '18 or '19. Size, arm talent, intangibles."

Savage, a former NFL general manager and an assistant to Riley in 1991 in the old World League of American Football, made the observation after visiting a practice.

Lee has quickly garnered the respect of his teammates, who voted him a team captain last week.

"Just how he comes off as a person," offensive lineman Jerald Foster said. "He believes in you, he believes in himself and he understands what needs to be done. With all those things rolled into one person, it was that much easier for us to accept him as the leader that he is for our team. Not only is he a good leader, he's a great player and he does exactly what's needed on the field. I can't wait for him to showcase himself in this first game."

No one is more eager to get started than Lee.

"I think Coach Riley has given me an unbelievable opportunity to come here," Lee said. "I want to do everything I can with that opportunity. It is the next chapter in my career and I'm extremely lucky to be here playing at a school like this with its tradition. It's not something I take for granted, ever. Something I continually think on is what am I going to do with this opportunity, and it keeps me motivated."

Injured Purdue QB Blough questionable for No. 16 Louisville
                      August 28, 2017

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) No. 16 Louisville will have reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson at quarterback for Saturday night's opener against Purdue in Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Boilermakers may be making a game-time decision on their starter.

Reigning Big Ten passing leader David Blough (295 of 517 for 3,352 yards, 25 touchdowns and 21 interceptions last season) suffered a sprained right shoulder diving for the pylon during an Aug. 12 scrimmage. The junior only returned to practice on Sunday.

First-year coach and former Louisville and assistant Jeff Brohm said Monday that he hopes Blough will be the starter Saturday night. The staff will evaluate Blough's ability to pass without pain before making a decision. If Blough is not ready, sophomore Elijah Sindelar, who completed 14 of 32 passes for 165 yards and three interceptions in limited 2016 action, will be the starter.

Brohm said the injury leaves some uncertainty for Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, whose Cardinals were 9-4 last season. Purdue was 3-9.

''David was having a great camp,'' Brohm said. ''Unfortunately, David missed two weeks after the injury, but he looked good Sunday. In the meantime, Elijah has practiced well. We feel very good about both guys. ... With that being said, even before David's injury, we planned to play more than one quarterback.''

As a former quarterback, Brohm understands the severity of a throwing shoulder sprain, especially for a team that plans to rely heavily on the passing game. With Blough under center in 2016, Purdue ranked 21st nationally in passing offense - two spots ahead of Louisville, which got 3,543 passing yards and 30 touchdowns from Jackson.

While Blough hated missing two weeks of fall camp, he understood the medical staff and coaching staffs' decision to hold him out of practices.

''That's why you have to be cautious with it,'' Blough said. ''It's very unfortunate, especially at this time of year, but better now than Week 3 or 4 ... We do have a little bit of time, and that's the encouraging thing.''

Sindelar, who grew up in Princeton, Kentucky, said he is sorry Blough has been injured. He has gained valuable experience working with the No. 1 offense.

''My development has gone really well,'' Sindelar said. ''Between first team and second team there is a difference, so to be able to go with all the No. 1s has prepared me even more for being able to step into a game and be ready at any point. My mindset is to dominate, and that hasn't changed. Just because I'm getting more first-team reps doesn't mean that now I have to turn it on. It's already been on.''

Cyclones hope to counter shaky defense with explosive attack
                        August 28, 2017

AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State's restructured defense will be considered a liability until it can prove otherwise.

The Cyclones will look to counter a defense in flux with what could be one of the best offenses in school history.

Iowa State might finally be built to hang in a league where even teams with strong defenses often find themselves in high-scoring shootouts. The Cyclones have arguably the deepest group of wide receivers in the Big 12, a pair of talented backs in David Montgomery and Mike Warren, and a quarterback, Jacob Park, who coming off his first full offseason in the program.

Iowa State (3-9 in 2016) opens its second season under coach Matt Campbell on Saturday against Northern Iowa.

''Pressure is only when you fail to lay a great foundation of what you are and what you're about,'' Campbell said Monday.

The Cyclones set new marks in 2016 for points (29.4) and yards (439.8) per conference game.

Iowa State has enough skill position players to potentially blow past those numbers this fall - starting with one of its most talented pass-catching groups in recent memory.

Senior Allen Lazard caught 69 passes for 1,018 yards in 2016. Lazard also broke the school record with six games of at least 100 yards receiving, and he averaged seven catches for 114 yards a game over his last five.

''When you watched him at his best, he's really special. He's got the ability to make all the catches. He's got the ability to be that guy on third down, to make the first down,'' Campbell said of Lazard.

In year's past, the rare Cyclones as dangerous as Lazard would typically face constant double teams. But this season, Iowa State has much more than just one option outside.

Deshaunte Jones caught 37 passes as a freshman last season, and his six TDs were fourth-best nationally among newcomers. Trever Ryen also caught 37 passes and nearly led the Big 12 in punt return average, and former Temple transfer Matt Eaton was among the nation's top junior college receivers in 2016.

Hakeem Butler caught a pair of touchdown passes as a true freshman in 2016, and freshman Chase Allen was considered among the nation's top tight end prospects before a car accident forced him to redshirt a year ago.

The hope for Iowa State is that those playmakers will open us its running game, and one of the more interesting things to watch on Saturday will be how the Cyclones use Montgomery and Warren.

Montgomery emerged as the No. 1 back late last season while Warren fought through a high ankle sprain, and Montgomery was listed as the starter on a depth chart released Monday.

But Warren will likely get more carries than a typical backup - especially with Kene Nwangwu out indefinitely with an Achilles injury. Iowa State is holding out hope that it won't have to use a medical redshirt for Nwangwu, who was second in the Big 12 in kickoff returns as a freshman.

Park's impressive play down the stretch in 2016 convinced former starter Joel Lanning to give linebacker a shot. But Lanning might not be done at quarterback, as Campbell alluded to on Monday.

''Everyone wants to know, are we going to play Joel Lanning on both sides of the ball? My answer is we'll see,'' Campbell said.

No. 5 Clemson focused on winning games, not defending title
                        August 28, 2017

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and his staff have been working for months to drill the good feelings from a national title out of the fifth-ranked Tigers.

''We aren't defending anything,'' Swinney says flatly . ''If we were like an NFL team had (New England quarterback) Tom Brady back for his 15th year, that would be one thing. But in college football, it is a new team.''

And one that sounds hungry to make its own mark, though many of the returning players only played a supporting role during the national championship run.

''We've got a windshield mentality,'' said safety Tanner Muse, one of 11 new starters when the fifth-ranked Tigers take on Kent State on Saturday. ''All we look forward to is the next game.''

That could be tested early in the opener. Much of the crowd will be in full-blown celebration mode as the school has a pre-game program remembering last year's title run. Center Justin Falcinelli, another new starter, was asked what it will be like to run down the hill before the game.

''Oh, wow, I hadn't thought about that,'' he said, smiling.

Once the game begins, fans will see a vastly different group than the one that left Tampa, Florida after a 35-31 victory over top-ranked Alabama to win the crown last January. Gone are some of the best playmakers in the game last year, including first-round draft picks in quarterback Deshaun Watson and receiver Mike Williams.

Kelly Bryant, a reserve the last two seasons, steps into Watson's cleats against Kent State. Swinney has said that every spot on field is under regular scrutiny to make sure players earn time on the field and Bryant understands he'll have to keep the offense moving forward to remain ''QB1.''

''A lot of eyes are on us,'' Bryant said. ''We accept the challenge and are ready to get it going.''

Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said most of the new faces have done the right things as backups to get ready for bigger roles.

''We've seen these guys prepare. We think these guys are ready,'' Scott said. ''Now that doesn't mean they aren't going to go out there and make mistakes, that's part of it especially in these early games. But they've put in the work.''

The questions will largely come on offense, which will see seven new starters including at tailback, tight end and two of the three receiving spots where Deon Cain and Ray-Ray McCloud will take over for Williams and all-time receptions leader Artavis Scott.

The third starter is reliable Hunter Renfrow, a national championship her o whose 2-yard TD catch with a second left proved the winning points against the Crimson Tide.

Milan Richard will start at tight end for last year's senior Jordan Leggett. C.J. Fuller takes over for two-time 1,000-yard rusher Wayne Gallman and Falcinelli replaces senior leader Jay Guillermo at center.

The losses on defense are fewer, yet significant . The Tigers will be without defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, who led the team with 10.5 sacks, and linebacker Ben Boulware, the fiery, emotional leader of last year's defense.

Scott said with so many new starters, the Tigers did not get caught up in last year's glory.

''These guys have been waiting for their time,'' he said.

Defensive end Clelin Ferrell is happy to get back on the field after a long, exciting offseason. ''The fans, they love telling us how great last year was,'' he said laughing. ''We're focused on this year.''

That's just how Swinney wants it. His catchphrase, ''New team, same dream,'' has been on practice T-shirts and ingrained in the psyche of his players.

''We're a little anxious to get out there,'' said Bryant, the new starting quarterback. ''A lot of guys are trying to prove themselves.''

Washington suspends LB Victor for opener
                          August 28, 2017

No. 8 Washington has suspended standout linebacker Azeem Victor for Friday night's season opener at Rutgers because of a violation of team rules, coach Chris Petersen announced Monday.

Victor, who has been selected to various preseason All-American teams, earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors last season, despite missing the final four games because of a broken leg. He made 67 tackles in 10 games.

Victor, a senior, is rated as the 57th-best pro prospect for the 2018 draft by NFLDraftScout.com.

Victor and Keishawn Bierria are returning starters at linebacker for a Washington defensive front seven that has standouts Vita Vea and Greg Gaines on the line.

Petersen also announced that sophomore defensive back Austin Joyner has been suspended for two games due to a violation of team rules. Joyner has been competing in a new-look secondary -- three Washington defensive backs were selected in the second round of the 2017 draft.

Eason, Chubb keys to Georgia's hopes for offensive revival
                          August 28, 2017

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) There was a glaring omission in Georgia's game-week notes package released to media on Monday - no depth chart for the No. 15 Bulldogs.

Second-year coach Kirby Smart wants to go through the final week of practice for Saturday's season-opening visit from Appalachian State before revealing his starters and backups.

Asked Monday about his starting offensive line, Smart said ''We haven't determined it yet.''

                          Placekicker?

''That has not been determined yet,'' he said. ''We think it will be decided here shortly, though.''

There were similar responses for the starting secondary and backup running backs.

No depth chart is necessary to know quarterback Jacob Eason and tailback Nick Chubb will be key starters for a Georgia offense that must improve to meet the team's preseason expectations. Georgia finished only 8-5 in Smart's first season but was picked by media to win the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division this year.

Georgia ranked only 11th in the league in scoring last season.

Eason, who started the last 12 games as a freshman last season, has acknowledged he struggled at times to make the transition from high school in Lake Stevens, Washington. Coaches and players say they have seen a more confident Eason this summer .

''He's definitely a lot more comfortable,'' tight end Jeb Blazevich said Monday. ''He really understands the offense a lot better.''

Blazevich said he was ''definitely impressed'' with Eason's play as a freshman ''but now he has more to build on that and take that knowledge to a new level.''

As Eason's production wavered, defenses focused on containing the running game led by Chubb and Sony Michel last season. Chubb still ran for 1,130 yards and eight touchdowns in his comeback from major knee surgery that ended his 2015 season.

Chubb is the second-leading rusher in Georgia history, behind Herschel Walker, and could be in position to show he is back to the form that produced 13 straight games with at least 100 yards rushing before the injury.

''He looks much quicker,'' Smart said recently. ''His cuts seem faster. He is running at a good pad level. He runs really hard. He seems to be healthy.''

There will be some newcomers at wide receiver.

Smart said last week transfer Ahkil Crumpton ''catches everything that's thrown to him.'' Mecole Hardman, a converted cornerback, also could play a big role.

Terry Godwin and Riley Ridley are among the Bulldogs' top returning receivers. Georgia lost Isaiah McKenzie and Reggie Davis to the NFL's Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.

Smart said there is ''no set plan'' to create playing time for freshman backup quarterback Jake Fromm against Appalachian State.

''Jacob Eason is our quarterback,'' Smart said.

NOTES: Smart said the status of CB Malkom Parrish, recovering from surgery two weeks ago to repair a broken bone in his foot, is ''still not determined yet. ... We are trying to get him back for this game.'' ... Ridley and backup RB Elijah Holyfield are expected to be suspended for the opener as discipline for misdemeanor marijuana charges in separate incidents last spring. Smart would not confirm the suspensions, saying the discipline ''will be handled internally.'' ... Georgia could start two true freshmen: RT Andrew Thomas and S Richard LeCounte. ... Cameron Nizialek, a transfer from Columbia University, is expected to be the starting punter.

Oklahoma changes up defense, seeks better results
                          August 28, 2017

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma is hoping a defensive shakeup produces better results.

The Sooners hit rock bottom last season when they surrendered 854 yards in a 66-59 win at Texas Tech. The Sooners held all six of their remaining opponents to 28 points or fewer, but that ugly victory still prompted some adjustments.

Oklahoma has shifted from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 to try to get more pressure on quarterbacks, added Ruffin McNeill as a defensive line and assistant head coach and increased the amount of hitting in fall practice. The seventh-ranked Sooners will find out if the changes make a difference, starting Saturday in their season opener against Texas-El Paso.

''We know we have to improve from last year,'' said linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, a captain. ''We looked at how we did statistically and we weren't happy about it. We know what we have to do to be better. We went out there, and we're going to try and get it done.''

The defense has accepted much of the responsibility for the slow start that kept the Sooners out of the College Football Playoff last season. Oklahoma lost two of its first three before closing with 10 straight wins.

''We know that we have to start fast,'' Okoronkwo said. ''We don't feel like we started as fast as we should have the past few years and we have to do something about it. That's the approach we're taking.''

Okoronkwo said the hitting has been unlike any previous camp, with players battling as though they are facing an outside opponent. Coach Lincoln Riley said that was by design.

''You've just got to be able to look at each team differently and just ask the simple question, `What do we need to play at the highest level?''' Riley said. ''And when we looked at this team ... it just made sense for us as a staff to add a little bit of physicality to it.''

Okoronkwo will be a critical piece if the Sooners are to improve. The preseason All-Big 12 choice had 71 tackles, nine sacks and 12 tackles for loss last season. Cornerback Jordan Thomas, also a preseason All-Big 12 pick, led the conference with 17 pass breakups last season.

The defensive line features returnees Matt Romar, D.J. Ward and Neville Gallimore. Linebackers Caleb Kelly and Emmanuel Beal and safety Steven Parker add experience.

Freshman linebacker Kenneth Murray is expected to provide an immediate boost, possibly as a starter. Riley said Murray might be the most athletic linebacker the Sooners have had in his nearly three years with the program.

''The guy's physically so good, and he's just getting better so fast,'' Riley said. ''He's going to make a lot of plays right now, and it'll be a matter of time before he's making just about all of them. And so we feel really, really good about his development.

Okoronkwo is trying to help bring Murray along quickly.

''Since he's gotten here, he's been right next to me,'' he said. ''That's like my little brother. We were just watching film this morning. He's ready to go. I'm ready to see what he does.''

Virginia QB Benkert says 'there's a good edge' to Cavaliers
                            August 28, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Bronco Mendenhall heads into his second season at Virginia with an experienced defense and hopes that his offense will have many more weapons than a year ago.

He also hopes the year he's spent working on the Cavaliers' mental approach will show dividends when they open against William & Mary on Saturday.

The difference is certain to be evident in one of his three captains: quarterback Kurt Benkert.

''I would say, last year there was a lot excitement - new coaching staff, new this, new that, new schemes,'' the senior QB said Monday. ''And we went in with a lot of confidence because we worked hard and that's all that our confidence was based off of. Now that we've been through it, we got hit in our mouths a few times last year, and really knowing what we're made of and seeing what we're able to push through, I wouldn't say it's a false confidence like it was last year.

''I think there's a good edge to us and I think we really believe that we can do this.''

This year, Benkert's ability to stay healthy will likely go a long way in determining their ability to improve on last year's 2-10 mark. While eight starters return on defense, Benkert's backup is freshman Lindell Stone, who was playing high school football not far from the Virginia campus at this time a year ago.

''He's one of the best football players on our team,'' Mendenhall said of Benkert, who transferred from East Carolina and won the starting job last year. Early in the season, he injured his non-throwing shoulder fighting for extra yardage and became increasingly skittish behind a mediocre-at-best offensive line.

Now, he's lost weight, gained speed and no longer feels the effects of knee surgery that slowed him last season. The line also is improved, he and his coach agree, bolstered by the additions of two graduate transfers: 6-foot-4, 325-pound John Montelus from Notre Dame and 6-5, 320-pound Brandon Pertile from Oklahoma State.

Still, his coach said, he'd rather have Benkert be smart about what he tries to do that get hurt trying to do too much.

''We don't want him taking extra shots,'' Mendenhall said. ''If it's a difference of a first down and getting an extra yard, get the first down. That's good enough. If it's a first down and there's a chance to get five more and get out of bounds, get out of bounds.''

For his part, Benkert said the Cavaliers will have a lot more offensive options this season. Andre Levrone and Joe Reed join Doni Dowling as deep threats in the passing game, and Mendenhall said offensive coaches spent the sprint looking for ways to expand the role of versatile hybrid Olamide Zaccheaus.

''I think you guys will see on Saturday. I think we're a completely different offense,'' Benkert said. ''We do a really good job right now of getting everyone the ball, playing to each of our players' strengths. I'm excited for everybody to see all the work coach Anae and the coaching staff has been doing for us.''

Wolfpack RBs set to share the load in opener vs. Gamecocks
                            August 28, 2017

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State's offense leaned heavily on a single running back last year. Things will look different for Saturday's opener against South Carolina in Charlotte.

The Wolfpack lost top rusher Matt Dayes from last year's team, and now has a depth chart indicating a committee approach with juniors Nyheim Hines and Reggie Gallaspy II, and fifth-year graduate Dakwa Nichols.

Throw in versatile all-purpose threat Jaylen Samuels, and Dave Doeren's team has no shortage of options.

''I think it's in our best interest - and I think most football teams will tell you that - to make sure those guys are all getting work,'' Doeren said Monday of N.C. State's three full-time running backs. ''And they will.''

The team released its depth chart Monday, listing an ''or'' between Hines, Gallaspy and Nichols instead of settling on one a starter. Samuels - named last week to The Associated Press preseason all-America team as a second-team all-purpose back - is listed as an H-back but has lined up at running back, receiver and tight end during his career.

The question is how the coaches will distribute the workload, both against the Gamecocks and beyond for a team considered to be a dark horse in the Atlantic Coast Conference's power-heavy Atlantic Division.

''Every offense - no-huddle spread, even pro-style teams - it's the hot hand,'' Hines said during preseason camp. ''If you're making plays, you're going to get the ball.''

Dayes had a workhorse role last year, running for 1,166 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had six games with at least 25 offensive touches, including big performances against eventual national champion Clemson (133 offensive yards and a touchdown) and division power Florida State (131 yards).

No other running back managed even 50 carries. Don't expect a repeat in 2017.

''As the season gets longer and longer, you worry less and less about the number of hits they've taken,'' Doeren said, ''because if you prepare the right way on the front end where you're rotating those guys, you can get to the back end of the season and soak somebody (with carries) that's really playing well.

''But if we would give any of those guys 30 carries in the first game, they may love that but that would be difficult for 12 straight weeks for anyone.''

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound Gallaspy has the most reps with 115 career carries and provides the most backfield bulk.

Hines and Nichols have similar size (5-9 and about 195 pounds), though Hines boasts speed that earned him All-America track honors on a relay team that won an ACC championship. He had played mostly at receiver last season after carrying the ball 48 times his freshman year.

As for Samuels, the 5-foot-11 senior from Charlotte has scored a combined 29 rushing or receiving touchdowns over the past two seasons while creating matchup problems with his ability to line up just about anywhere.

''When Reggie is in there, I feel like he knows his job,'' Samuels said. ''When Nyheim is in there, he'll get his job done. I hope they trust me, that I'll get my job done when I get in there. So we just work off each other and go from there.''

Southern Miss trying to win 2 straight vs. Kentucky
                              August 28, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) Southern Mississippi defensive back Picasso Nelson knows what it feels like to watch Kentucky's offense embarrass the Golden Eagles' secondary.

He also knows what it feels like to shut the Wildcats down and earn a huge road win over an opponent from the Southeastern Conference.

Southern Miss beat Kentucky 44-35 in Lexington last season , falling into a 35-10 hole during the second quarter before scoring the game's final 34 points in a stunning comeback. It was the first time Southern Miss had beaten an SEC opponent since 2000 and ended a 13-game losing streak against the league.

Now the Golden Eagles get a chance to make it two in a row against the Wildcats. This time, Southern Miss gets to host Kentucky on Saturday at Roberts Stadium.

If all goes well, Nelson hopes an improbable 25-point comeback won't be needed.

''You've got to go in just focusing on the small things,'' Nelson said. ''That's what we did last year in the second half. This year, Lord willing, we can put four quarters together.''

The game represents a rare chance for Southern Miss to host an SEC opponent on its home field. Kentucky is just the second team from the league to come to Hattiesburg since 1989 - the other was Mississippi State in 2015.

Kentucky has high hopes this season after recovering from last year's loss to Southern Miss to finish with a 7-6 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in the SEC East. Coach Mark Stoops said his program learned some valuable lessons from last year's loss to the Golden Eagles.

''One bad thing led to another,'' Stoops said. ''Guys trying to do too much.''

Southern Miss enters its second year under coach Jay Hopson with several experienced playmakers. There's running back Ito Smith, who ran for 1,459 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. There's also receiver Allenzae Staggers, who caught 63 passes for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns.

The one big question mark is at quarterback. Junior Kwadra Griggs and sophomore Keon Howard have been locked in a quarterback competition all during preseason camp and Hopson said Monday that he expects both to play on Saturday.

Because of the uncertainty under center, the Golden Eagles likely need another big game from Smith, who ran for 173 yards and a touchdown against the Wildcats last season.

''I don't think there's any big secret that Ito Smith is a great football player for us and he's going to see the ball,'' Hopson said. ''Ito is one of those guys who when he does have the ball, he makes things happen. You've got to have balance, but Ito is a key piece of the puzzle for us.''

The Southern Miss defense is led by a veteran secondary that includes Nelson and Cornell Armstrong. He said the familiarity among the returners should help against Kentucky and allow the Golden Eagles to be successful from the first play.

''We know that our guys have a feel for the game and a better understanding for the game,'' Nelson said. ''Instead of just running around and moving fast for no reason, there's more poise and purpose.''

Harbaugh playing games as Michigan preps to play Florida
                              August 28, 2017

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Jim Harbaugh is playing games.

Entering his third season in charge of college football's winningest program, he's refusing to unveil his roster until three days before No. 11 Michigan kicks off the season against No. 17 Florida in Texas.

And he won't say whether returning starter Wilton Speight or seldom-used senior John O'Korn will take the first snap Saturday against the Gators at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

''Have not heard Florida announce who their starting quarterback would be,'' Harbaugh said Monday. ''We'd love to have that information. No, we're not announcing our starting quarterback. People make a lot of a big deal about our roster or not announcing a starting quarterback.''

NJ Advance Media, attempting to identify New Jersey natives playing in the Big Ten, submitted a Freedom Of Information Act request to obtain the Wolverines' 2018 roster. The list of players was not published online or printed on paper when the team had spring practice or reported for training camp this summer. The school relented a little, releasing the student-athletes on athletic scholarship on Harbaugh's roster.

Michigan center Mason Cole and his teammates have gotten used to the off-the-field buzz Harbaugh has created since coming back to campus in 2015.

''We don't think anything of it,'' Cole said. ''We just go out and play. We don't really worry about the rosters.''

Michigan was more forthcoming about what it will wear against Florida. It showed off an alternate uniform featuring a maize jersey, a color it will wear above the belt for the first time since facing Navy in 1928.

Harbaugh is holding to his plan to ''determine and publicize'' the final roster on Wednesday.

The public will likely have to wait longer - probably until Saturday afternoon - to find out if Speight is starting as expected or if O'Korn has gone from barely playing last year to becoming the No. 1 QB against Florida.

''The philosophy is meritocracy,'' Harbaugh said. ''There's competition that's healthy, fair and productive. It's been very good. It's been a good camp for our quarterbacks. We feel confident in our guys. We believe in them.''

Harbaugh does not believe, though, in tipping his hand or sharing his plan with a team withholding similar information.

''I have not seen the starting quarterback come out of Florida,'' he said. ''Never any mention of that. Interesting. Yes, we'd like to have that information from them and I'm sure they'd like to have it from us. Right now, neither is giving that information.''

Florida has, indeed, kept its starting quarterback under wraps throughout preseason practice.

Gators coach Jim McElwain even hinted last week that three QBs could take a snap against Michigan. Fourth-year junior Luke Del Rio, redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks and Malik Zaire, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, are the candidates for the job.

Del Rio, a college journeyman and the son of Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio, started six games last season before sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in November. The 6-foot-5, 227-pound Franks has been projected as the starter for months, maybe even a year. Franks, a four-star recruit with prototypical size and arm strength, sat out last year while learning the offense and bulking up. The Gators also added Zaire to the mix in June, a move that suggested McElwain wasn't completely satisfied with his quarterbacks.

McElwain dodged every question about his QBs on Monday and only dropped a tongue-in-cheek hint that receiver Kadarius Toney would take the first snap in the wildcat formation.

''The quarterback situation, we have a plan that's in place,'' he said. ''No, I'm not going to tell you what it is, so there's no reason to ask. But we're excited about that. We'll leave that for them to guess as well.''

Lights, camera, action: No. 1 Bama, No. 3 FSU ready to roll
                                August 28, 2017

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Jalen Hurts is already accustomed to these kinds of games.

The marquee games. The biggest matchups on the largest stage.

This one pits top-ranked Alabama against No. 3 Florida State in the first-ever opening matchup of preseason Top-3 teams since the Associated Press started selecting them in 1950. The teams will square off in the fully loaded new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta under the bright lights of the national spotlight.

Hurts sounded downright unimpressed by all those trappings when the sophomore quarterback was asked Monday if he's used to these kinds of games.

''I played in the national championship,'' he said, ''so I guess so.''

Historic opening matchup or not, these teams are well acquainted with big games, thank you very much.

They've each won a national title in the last five years, and Alabama has collected four in a decade under coach Nick Saban. The Tide has made a habit of playing teams from other Power Five conferences in the first or second game each season since 2008, winning all of them by double digits, including three top-10 matchups.

Last year's 52-6 romp over then-No. 20 USC set the table for an undefeated run into the national title game against Clemson.

As much as anybody, the Seminoles have done their part to disprove the notion that the Southeastern Conference is college football's top league. Florida State is 9-1 against SEC teams under coach Jimbo Fisher, who will be facing Alabama and former boss Saban for the first time.

They're also the only programs to carry a streak of at least five straight BCS or New Year's Six games into the season.

Fisher believes some of the surplus of hype comes from the fact that there's been an entire offseason to think and talk about it.

''If you're here at Florida State playing in these games, you're going to be in hyped games,'' Fisher said. ''Every year we play Clemson, Miami, Florida, Louisville - whoever we play, what conference, what big bowl ... that's part of being at Florida State.''

He and Saban are the only two active head coaches with a winning record against teams ranked in the Top 25.

Something has to give: Neither head coach has lost an opener in their current job.

This really is nothing new to Alabama, which will have played No. 4 Washington, No. 2 Clemson and now No. 3 Florida State in college football's version of Murderer's Row.

This will be the 51st game of the last 117 that `Bama was ranked No. 1. The Tide is favored by a touchdown.

Such a challenging opener, Saban said, helps the players focus during the offseason. It also gives a clearer gauge of where the team stands than a blowout win over an obviously overmatched team.''

But both teams, win or lose, will face several more marquee matchups as the season progresses. Saban - and apparently Hurts - just choose not to buy into the hype.

''If your goal is going to be the best that you can be individually, personally, or as a team, or as a unit, then why is the guy you're playing against determine the level that you play?'' Saban said.

Then again, in this case, that would mean ratcheting up their play. It's only the fourth top-5 matchup in an opening game, after all.

Fisher could have just as well been describing his own team in praising Alabama.

''Outstanding players that play very hard, very physical, very well-coached,'' he said. ''Have big guys, dynamic guys and playmakers across the board. They can throw it, they can catch it, they can run with it, they can defend, they can cover.

''They do all the things that you have to do to be successful.''

NOTE: Alabama defensive end Raekwon Davis wasn't at practice during the media viewing period Monday. He was shot in the right leg outside a Tuscaloosa bar early Sunday morning. A Sheriff's department spokesman described the injury as minor. Saban described his status as ''day to day'' for the game.
