REILLY SHINES IN ESKS’ COMEBACK WIN AGAINST TICATS

HAMILTON — The Edmonton Eskimos ended the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ hopes of grabbing their first win in a close-fought 31-28 battle at Tim Hortons Field on Thursday night.

Ticats quarterback Zach Collaros started the game off well, connecting on several quick passes. But pressure broke through on the opening drive, and a hit from defensive end Euclid Cummings forced the ball loose. Fortunately for the Ticats, Edmonton’s Marcus Howard quickly coughed it back up on the same play.

The Ticats then struck a big play when running back Ross Scheuerman took the ball into open space for 40 yards. Hamilton’s Sergio Castillo ended up knocking a short field goal through on the drive, taking the early 3-0 lead.

The Ticats’ defence looked stout early in the game, forcing the Eskimos to take a safety deep in their own end, bringing the lead to 5-0 in the 1st quarter.

The Eskimos’ defence let other potential turnovers slip away in the opening quarter, when a forced fumble was negated by a facemask penalty and an overthrown Collaros pass was dropped by Edmonton defensive back Brandyn Thompson. The Ticats retained the ball and Castillo made another field goal to bring their lead to 8-0.

The Eskimos’ offence began to come to life near the end of the 1st quarter when Mike Reilly connected with Bryant Mitchell for a 29-yard touchdown. Mitchell had a big game filling in for the injured Adarius Bowman, taking the ball an extra 21-yards after-the-catch for his first career CFL touchdown. Edmonton missed the convert, bringing the score to 8-6.

Both defences continued to look strong in the 2nd quarter, as both team’s struggled to consistently move the ball and sustain drives on offence. Hamilton defensive back Richard Leonard was all over the field in the first half, making several key pass-breakups to help keep Reilly and his receivers at bay.

The Ticats started rolling again near the end of the half, when Collaros found receivers Junior Collins and Mike Jones on back-to-back plays to move the ball into the red zone.
Receiver Luke Tasker then took a short reception inside the 5-yard line, but after falling short of the end zone, the Ticats ventured to go for it on 3rd down. Collaros made it count, finding Tasker in the end zone for the score to help put his team up 15-6. The touchdown was Tasker’s first of the season.

Edmonton started moving the ball again on offence as time began to run out in the opening half, with Reilly putting together an impressive 61-yard drive. After a brilliant scramble by Reilly to extend the play, the quarterback found receiver Brandon Zylstra near the end zone.

Travon Van took the ball into the end zone on the next play for the 2-yard rushing score, narrowing the Hamilton lead to 15-13.

The Ticats’ defence continued to look strong in the 3rd quarter. Hamilton’s Terrell Davis got penetration on special teams, blocking a Sean Whyte punt and setting up an easy scoop-and-score for Ticats linebacker Geoff Hughes. The score increased Hamilton’s lead to 22-13.

Scheuerman made another big play for Hamilton on a subsequent series, taking a screen pass for 22 yards behind a convoy of Ticats linemen. The Hamilton running back finished the game with 104 total yards.

But the Ticats’ drive stalled after that, leading to a 46-yard Castillo field goal.

The Eskimos created excitement near the start of the 4th quarter when Reilly scrambled to his left and found slotback Corey Watson. Watson turned what could have been a minor gain into a long touchdown, taking the ball 29 yards after the catch to help bring his team within five points of the Ticats.
Momentum stayed on Edmonton’s side following Watson’s score. Their defence secured a turnover when a deep Collaros pass was picked off by Esks’ defensive back Josh Woodman. The interception was Woodman’s first in his CFL career.

The Esks were unable to capitalize with a touchdown, however, as Hamilton’s Richard Leonard was once again draped all over the Edmonton receivers on the drive. Whyte kicked a 40-yard field goal through, bringing the score to 25-23.

The Ticats would add another field goal with under two minutes remaining in the game, bringing their lead to 28-23. But it turned out to not be enough.

Mike Reilly continued his effective play in the final moments of the game, leading a comeback drive in the dying minutes. Quickly bringing his team down the field, Reilly would find Vidal Hazelton for a 15-yard touchdown. Reilly then connected with Bryant Mitchell on the 2-point conversion to complete the comeback and lift the Eskimos over the Ticats 31-28.

Reilly led his team to their fourth victory with 350 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air on 27 completions.

Week 6 will see Edmonton take on the Lions, while the Ticats will look to get things going on the road against the Stampeders.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)
        Point-spread: BC -8 ½
        Total: 56 ½

        Game Overview

The Blue Bombers put up 43 points in overtime in its Week 1 victory at Saskatchewan and they rolled up 33 points last week. This effort was wrapped around a 19-point loss to Calgary in which this unit produced just 10 points. Matt Nichols has done a decent job under center with 826 yards passing and five touchdown throws in three games and while Andrew Harris has racked up 170 yards on the ground, this unit still needs better consistency from week to week.

BC could be the most complete team in the CFL on both sides of the ball right now. The Lions are definitely the deepest team in talent at the quarterback position after Travis Lulay stepped in for an injured Jonathon Jennings in the first quarter of last week’s game against Hamilton to throw for 436 yards while completing 29 of his 36 attempts.

        Betting Trends

-- The Blue Bombers are 5-0-1 ATS in its last six games against BC and they are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games against the Lions. The total has gone OVER in the last four meetings.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's CFL betting preview and odds: Blue Bombers at Lions
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Travis Lulay, who set a single-game CFL record for most passing yards off the bench with 436 against the Tiger-Cats, is set to make his first start since September 2015.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Lions (-4, 56.5)

The BC Lions look to extend their winning streak to four games when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday. The Lions swept their Eastern road trip with wins over the Toronto Argonauts (28-15), Montreal Alouettes (23-16) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (41-26) to grab a share of top spot in the West Division, and hope to beat the Blue Bombers in the regular season for the first time since Oct. 25, 2014.

Travis Lulay, who set a single-game CFL record for most passing yards off the bench with 436 against the Tiger-Cats, is set to make his first start since September 2015 after Jonathon Jennings suffered a shoulder injury on the first play from scrimmage. Winnipeg bounced back from a Week 3 loss to the Calgary Stampeders with a 33-25 victory over the Argonauts. The Blue Bombers found their rhythm on offence after being held to 10 points the previous week while the defence forced three turnovers en route to their first home win of the season, and hope to stay in the congested race for the division title by avenging a 32-31 loss to BC in the Western semifinals last season. "We just feel like we're continuing to work toward being the team we know we can be and take it one week at a time," Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols told reporters. "The West is very good and we have to keep pace with these guys."

            TV:
            10 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

            LINE HISTORY:
The Lions opened as nine-point home favorites but that spread was reduced to -4 after it was announced that backup quarterback Travis Lulay would get the start in place of injured starter Jonathon Jennings. The total hit the board at 56.5 and is currently still on the opening number.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 2-1 O/U):
Andrew Harris missed practice in order to take a "rest day" after rushing for 81 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Toronto, but is expected to play Friday. Justin Medlock made 4-of-4 field goals, including a 55-yard attempt, against the Argonauts to extend his streak to a franchise record 28 in a row, which is also a personal best. Wide receiver T.J. Thorpe took reps with the first-team offence in place of L'Damian Washington after recovering from an injury setback while Winnipeg added linebacker Nehemie Kankolongo and defensive end Shayon Green, who registered three sacks in 13 games with the Blue Bombers in 2016 before being cut in training camp, to the practice roster.

            ABOUT THE LIONS (3-1 SU, 3-0 ATS, 1-2 O/U):
Jennings underwent an MRI which showed that his shoulder injury is not as severe as initially feared, but will miss Friday's clash and is listed on the injury report as week-to-week. Lulay was named one of the CFL's Top Performers of the Week after completing 29-of-36 passes with touchdown tosses to Nick Moore (10 catches for 220 yards), Shaq Johnson and Bryan Burnham, while adding another score on the ground against Hamilton. "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a special moment for me to be able to come off the bench and help my team win," Lulay told reporters. "It feels good to have the confidence of the guys around me."

            TRENDS:

            * Blue Bombers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog.
            * Lions are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games in Week 5.
            * Over is 8-0 in Blue Bombers last 8 road games.
            * Over is 5-1 in Lions last 6 games as a home favorite.
            * Blue Bombers are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

            CONSENSUS:
The home favorite Lions are getting 60 percent of the action from users and the Under is picking up 54 percent of the totals wagers.

            EXTRA POINTS:

            * The last four meetings have been decided by a combined nine points.
            * Lions RB Jeremiah Johnson has a rushing touchdown in each of his first four games in 2017.
            * Winnipeg DB T.J. Heath leads the CFL with four interceptions.

              • DÉJÀ VU: LIONS STORM BACK TO STUN BOMBERS

VANCOUVER — Travis Lulay threw a touchdown pass and ran for another major in the fourth quarter to make up a late 15 point deficit and rally the BC Lions to a 45-42 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Ty Long kicked a 34-yard field goal with less than a minute left on the clock to seal the victory for BC.

Lulay completed 28-of-43 attempts for 404 yards with two touchdown passes, a rushing touchdown and two interceptions.

Bryan Burnham racked up a game high 149 yards while Emmanuel Arceneaux had two majors in the Lions victory.

Bombers pivot Matt Nichols posted 254 yards on 28-of-36 passing with three touchdown tosses, a rushing major and one interception.

The Lions struck first in the match when Lulay aired out a long ball to Burnham for a 45-yard gain to set up BC in the red zone. Arceneaux capped of the drive with a 10-yard touchdown snag. The Lions two-point convert attempt was unsuccessful to keep BC’s early lead at 6-0.

The Bombers’ special teams unit came up big a few minutes later when Derek Jones blocked Long’s punt deep in BC territory. Jones broke through the Lions’ defenders and reached Long before his foot even made contact with the ball. The play gave Winnipeg favourable field position just outside of the red zone. The Lions got into penalty trouble on the following play when they were called for pass interference in the end zone, advancing the Bombers to the one-yard line. Dan LeFevour barley broke across the plane for Winnipeg’s first major of the game to pull the Bombers ahead 7-6.

The Lions responded when Lulay went up top to Burnham in double coverage along the sidelines for another long gain. Long appeared to shake off his earlier hit, finishing off the drive with a 40-yard field goal to regain the Lions’ lead.

The Lions racked up three sacks in the first quarter alone.

BC pulled further ahead on their first drive of the second quarter. Lulay dumped a pass off to Chris Rainey, who picked up 37 yards after the catch by dodging Bombers’ defenders down the field and running out of bounds just short of the red zone. Jeremiah Johnson powered across the plane to cap off the drive for his fifth touchdown in as many games. Lulay found Rainey in the end zone for the successful two-point convert to put the Lions ahead 17-7.

A Bombers fumble put the ball back in the hands of the Lions in Winnipeg territory, but the Lions settled for another Long field goal to extend their lead to 20-7 midway through the second quarter.

The Bombers continued to battle back into the game as Nichols led a steady drive down the field, connecting with Clarence Denmark for the Bombers’ first passing touchdown of the night to cut the Lions’ lead to 20-14.

The Lions offence responded with a major of their own. Lulay marched down the field connecting with four different receivers, including rookie Danny Vandervoort for a long 25-yard catch. Rainey continued his stellar night with a two-yard touchdown run to extend the Lions’ lead to 27-14 with two minutes left in the quarter.

That was more than enough time for Winnipeg to orchestrate a late half scoring drive thanks to some special teams’ trickery. The Bombers attempted what appeared to be a field goal, but instead, Justin Medlock punched the ball toward the sideline to be scooped up by Mike Miller for a first down. Nichols found Darvin Adams deep in the right corner of the end zone on the next play for a major to put the score at 27-21 in favour of the Lions at halftime.

Nichols took matters into his own hands on the opening drive of the third quarter. Unable to find an open receiver, the Bombers pivot ran untouched into the end zone for a 20 yard rushing major to give the Bombers their first lead since the first quarter.

Winnipeg continued their second half charge late in the third quarter. Nichols appeared to overthrow a deep ball intended for Adams, but the receiver made an incredible outstretched one-handed snag in the corner of the end zone for his second touchdown of the game to pull the Bombers ahead 35-27.

The Bombers would strike again before the end of the quarter, courtesy of their defence. Defensive lineman Jake Thomas blocked a Lulay pass and tipped the ball to himself to make an impressive interception. Surrounded by orange and black jerseys and unable to make any downfield progress, Thomas handed the ball off to Kyle Knox, who ran it to the house for a Bombers’ major

It was all BC in the fourth quarter, as the Lions stormed back from a 15-point deficit in the final 15 minutes.

Lulay found Arceneaux for a touchdown to cut the Bombers lead to 42-34. But the Lions weren’t done there.

On a third down deep in Bombers’ territory, Winnipeg’s special teams was at it again as Medlock attempted to pass to Derek Jones for a new set of downs. The pass was short, setting BC up at Winnipeg’s 26-yard line. Lulay ran 14 yards into the end zone for the major. The two-point covert attempt was successful, tying the game at 42-42 midway through the fourth quarter.

A field goal by Long with less than a minute on the clock secured a 45-42 victory for the Lions.

The Bombers return home next week to take on the Montreal Alouettes Thursday night while the Lions will travel to Edmonton for a date with the Eskimos on Friday.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (2-1-1 SU, 1-3 ATS)
                  Point-spread: Calgary -11 ½
                  Total: 57 ½

                  Game Overview

The Roughriders come into this game off a bye week and they have been able to cover ATS in five of their last six games played on the road. Kevin Glenn has done a solid job at quarterback with 1,055 yards passing and seven touchdown throws. He has completed 99 of his first 136 passing attempts to post the top completion percentage in the CFL (72.8). Saskatchewan has still had its issues with a defense that is allowing an average of 26.7 PPG.

Calgary appeared to be on track for another successful run to the top of the West Division standings before last week’s shocking upset at the hands of Montreal. The Stampeders had a slight 20-16 lead against the Alouettes heading into the final quarter, but their defense could not make the plays at the end of the game when it had to the most.

                  Betting Trends

-- Calgary is a perfect 6-0 SU in the last six meetings and it has a 4-2-1 edge ATS in its last seven home games against the Roughriders. The total stayed UNDER in both meetings last season after going OVER in the previous four games between these two West Division foes.

                    *********************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day……..

                    13) Golden State Warriors are going to rip off season ticket holders by making them buy a PSL, which is forcing fans to pay a hefty fee for the right to buy season tickets for even more money in their new arena.

This is prevalent in the NFL but has never been done in the NBA before. This is a scummy way to treat a fanbase that was loyal to the Warriors, even before they were really good.

                    12) Kyrie Irving is set to make $20M a year over the next three years; recently, he told the Cavaliers he wants to be traded, preferably to the Knicks, Spurs, Heat or Timberwolves. I’m surprised he doesn’t want to play for the Warriors.

Who doesn’t want to be Lebron’s wingman?

Some information about the first game of a series or home/road trips…….
                    11) Over is 11-4-2 in Dodger series openers, 12-5 in San Diego series openers, 10-4-1 in Detroit’s.

                    Under is 10-5 in Cincinnati’s series openers, 12-3 in Cleveland’s, 10-5 in Baltimore’s.

                    10) Astros are 11-3 in the first game of a road series, only 8-8 in home series openers.

                    9) Washington is 21-11 in series openers, Colorado 21-10, the Dodgers 20-12.

Phillies are 10-21 in series openers, Pirates 12-19, St Louis 13-18, White Sox 10-20, Angels 12-19, Oakland 12-18.

                    8) A popular word the last year or two is “process.” Front office types now always say “It is a process” as a general way of saying nothing about what they actually do.

                    7) Madison Bumgarner makes $12M a year; he missed 13-14 starts this year because he got hurt riding a dirt bike on a team’s off-day. Giants are 0-6 in his starts in 2017. Bumgarner has done an awful lot for the Giants in his career, but none of it has been this season.

                    6) In Luis Severino’s last five starts, New York was outscored 10-0; they haven’t scored a run in the first five innings of any of his last five starts.

                    5) Dodgers have an awesome lineup; their 7th/8th place hitters are Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig.

                    4) Atlanta Braves’ TV announcer Chip Caray complained pretty loudly about the loud music at Dodger Stadium, calling it “ears bleeding loud”. He also said that the stadium is beautiful but doesn’t need the constant music/noise.

                    3) Recruiting never stops: New Mexico added a 6-5 kid from Australia this week. Lobos’ new coach Paul Weir has lot of international connections and is a very good recruiter.

                    2) I hope Sean Spicer puts his feet up and has a cold one tonight; he quit Friday as White House press secretary. In the history of man, no one looked as uncomfortable as Spicer did at the podium during press briefings- hopefully his next job will be a little more fun.

                    1) There are lessons to be learned in life every day: our lesson from Hugh Freeze getting fired at Ole Miss is this: If your boss gives you a cellphone to use and you want to call an escort service, get your own phone and use that one, not the school’s phone.

This is how you keep your $5M a year job. Buy another phone.

Saturday's CFL betting preview and odds: Roughriders at Stampeders
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bo Levi Mitchell completed 34-of-50 passes for 379 yards and a touchdown while Kamar Jorden continued his hot start to the campaign by catching nine passes for 140 yards against the Alouettes.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders (-10, 56)

The Calgary Stampeders look to bounce back from a rare regular-season loss when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. The Stampeders dropped a 30-23 decision to the Montreal Alouettes in Week 4 - only their third defeat since the start of the 2016 season - after being outscored 14-3 in the fourth quarter and hope to get back on the winning track by beating the Roughriders for the ninth consecutive time.

Calgary has won 11 straight home games, including a convincing 35-15 victory against Saskatchewan last season, and has averaged 37.6 points over its last five meetings with the Roughriders at McMahon Stadium. Saskatchewan picked up its first win of the season when it routed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 37-20 on July 8 in its last game. The Roughriders, who lead the league in time of possession (33:20), net offence (410.3) and first downs (19.7) per game, racked up 474 yards from scrimmage and hope for another offensive explosion in order to end their run of futility on the road where they have dropped 15 of their last 18 contests since the beginning of the 2015 season. Saskatchewan has been on the wrong end of a one-sided rivalry with Calgary in the last five years and looks to turn its fortunes in the series around by beating the Stampeders for the first time since a 36-21 triumph July 5, 2013.

                          9 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

                          LINE HISTORY:
The Stampeders opened as 11.5-point home chalk and that line was bet down as low as 10, where it currently sits. The total hit the betting board at 57.5 and was briefly bet up to 58 before fading all the way down to 56.5.

                          ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS, 2-1 O/U):
Kevin Glenn had a night to remember as he threw for 380 yards and accounted for four touchdowns against Hamilton to move within 163 yards of reaching 50,000 for his career. "I've been in a lot of systems that were a great fit," Glenn told reporters. "Being in the league for so long and understanding what we're try to actually do is probably the reason I've had success." Saskatchewan added defensive back A.J. Jefferson, who had 39 tackles and three interceptions with the Toronto Argonauts in 2016, to the practice squad to add versatility to the secondary while defensive lineman Ese Mrabure was placed on the injured list after suffering a knock against the Tiger-Cats.

                          ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (2-1-1 SU, 1-3 ATS, 3-1 O/U):
Bo Levi Mitchell completed 34-of-50 passes for 379 yards and a touchdown but had numerous drives stall in the red zone while Kamar Jorden continued his hot start to the campaign by catching nine passes for 140 yards against the Alouettes. Defensive end Charleston Hughes, who registered 16 sacks in 2016, practiced during the week and could return after missing the previous two games with a leg injury as could offensive lineman Shane Bergman, who has undergone the league's concussion protocol over the past few weeks. "It's a minor injury but something that's kept me out for a couple of weeks," Hughes told reporters. "It's a little bit different now as I feel like I'm well prepared to play."

                          TRENDS:

                          * Stampeders are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. West.

                          * Over is 5-1 in Roughriders last 6 games in July.

                          * Roughriders are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

                          CONSENSUS:
The home favorite Stampeders are getting 51 percent of the action from users and the Under is picking up 53 percent of the totals wagers. View full consensus data for this matchup here.

                          EXTRA POINTS:

                          • PREVIEW
RIDERS, STAMPS COLLIDE IN WEST DIVISION SHOWDOWN

CALGARY — The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders are set for their first meeting of 2017 on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.

The Riders are coming off of a bye week but have momentum heading into the game after thrashing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 37-20 in Week 3 for their first win of the season.

Kevin Glenn completed 32-of-43 passes for 380 yards with two touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns while Naaman Roosevelt led all receivers with an astounding 167 yards on 10 catches.

The Riders had control of the scoreboard all game, only trailing for five minutes in the first half. Hamilton simply could not contain Saskatchewan’s offence, giving up one major per quarter. Bakari Grant and Duron Carter were on the receiving end of Glenn’s two touchdown passes in the Riders first winning effort of the year.

Glenn praised his teammates earlier this week for their role in the victory.

“You have to get credit to the offensive linemen and the receivers,” Glenn told Riverville.com. “Having the time to be able to find your second or third option a lot of times is good and that’s all because of the offensive linemen…. And then receivers making catches. I know on second downs we have receivers making tough catches so that’s another thing that helps.”

Even in their losing efforts, Saskatchewan has not been out of a game through the first four weeks of the season. Their two defeats were only by a margin of three points or fewer. A big part of Riders’ early success can be attributed to their offence. Saskatchewan leads the league in time of possession (33 minutes 20 seconds per game) and net offence (410.3 yards per game) and is over 50 per cent on second down conversions.

There is added intrigue to the matchup after Riders head coach Chris Jones announced he would be closing one practice a week after accusing the Ticats of spying. Hamilton head coach Kent Austin called the allegations “absurd.” Jones believed that the Ticats had inside information regarding the the Riders’ special teams play.

The Stamps are also taking extra precaution leading up to their date with the Riders, choosing to close practice this week to unfamiliar faces.

It’s all part of a rivalry that continues to intensify as the Riders look to state their position as a West Division contender in year No. 2 under Chris Jones.

Calgary suffered its first loss of the season last week after falling to the Montreal Alouettes, 30-23. The Stamps led by four heading into the final quarter but Darian Durrant orchestrated two touchdown drives in the final 15 minutes while the Als’ defence held Calgary to only a field goal in the final quarter for the win.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 379 yards and a touchdown on 34-for-50 passing while Kamar Jorden led all receivers with 140 yards on nine catches.

Rene Paredes was a perfect five-for-five on field goal attempts.

“We weren’t putting up points,” Mitchell told Stampeders.com. “It’s not that we’re not playing well. We’re the second leading passing team in the league. Once we get down their in the green zone, we can’t always take the shot… we have to stop putting it on Rene (Paredes) all the time.

“We have to make sure we’re putting points in the endzone.”

Charletson Hughes will be back on the field for the Stamps after missing the past two games due to an injury. Last year’s leader in sacks only has one so far on the season. He has some ground to make up on Toronto’s Victor Bulter if he wants to regain his title.

Stamps linebacker Alex Singleton is tied for the league lead in tackles with BC’s Solomon Elimimian heading into Week 5. Singleton will be relied on to play a big role in stopping the Riders’ offence, who are averaging a league high 424 net yards per game.

For the Riders, Kienan LaFrance is on the depth chart at running back this week coming off the bye. LaFrance, signed by the team as a free agent this off-season, missed the first three games of the season due to injury.

Cameron Judge, Linden Gaydosh and Ese Mrabure are out of the lineup for the Green and White.

                            By The Numbers

3 – Straight games Glenn has made 30 or more completions. No quarterback in CFL history has gone four consecutive games with 30 or more completions.

5 – Number of field goals made by Paredes last week. It was the seventh time in his career that he was a perfect five-for-five.

7 – Passing touchdowns for both Glenn and Mitchell heading into Week 5, tied for second in the league

14 – Consecutive games Mitchell has thrown for a major. His next touchdown pass will be the 100th of his career.

116 – Yards needed by Glenn to become the seventh player in CFL history to reach the 50,000 yard mark.

                            The Skinny

This is the first of three meetings between the Stampeders and the Riders in 2017. Calgary has swept the series against the Riders for the past three seasons, winning last year’s contests 35-15 and 19-10.

Calgary also has a history of dominating Saskatchewan at McMahon with a recent 9-0-1 record. The last time the Roughriders won at McMahon Stadium was eight years ago back on Aug. 1, 2009.

The Riders have not have had a lot of success coming off the bye week as of late, losing their past two games after a long rest.

While history favours the Stamps, Calgary will have to find a way to stop the Riders’ surging offence if it hopes to come out with a win. Saskatchewan leads the league in points per game (31) and yards per game (424) heading into Week 5.

There will be no time to rest for Mitchell and company to match the Riders’ scoring pace after only finding the end zone once in their first loss of the season last week. Expect an offensive explosion in a battle between dueling quarterbacks during the Saturday night showdown in Calgary.

Kickoff is slated for 9:00 p.m. ET and can be followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker or seen on TSN and ESPN3.

STAMPS STIFLE SECOND-HALF COMEBACK ATTEMPT, BEAT RIDERS 27-10

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders dominated the first 30 minutes against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders and took a 17-0 lead into halftime, but had to grit their teeth through a second-half comeback attempt before pulling away for a 27-10 victory.

The Stamps (3-1-1) were nothing short of monstrous out of the gate, limiting Saskatchewan (1-3) to just three first downs and recording five sacks in the first half, but the visitors stormed back valiantly to make it a single-score game in the fourth quarter.

Calgary power back Jerome Messam led the charge on the ground for the Stamps with 135 rush yards and a game-sealing touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Charleston Hughes recorded a ‘sack-trick’ on the defensive side of the ball in the win.

Riders quarterback Kevin Glenn wrote his name in CFL history books in the losing effort, as his 203-yard passing performance made him the 7th quarterback in league history to break the 50,000-yard passing mark.

The Stamps opened the scoring on a 23-yard Rene Paredes field goal that capped a lengthy 12-play drive made all the longer by a trio of coach challenges — all three of which were successful.

After the Calgary defence forced a two-and-out on the following Saskatchewan possession, Mitchell aired out the first play of the new series to Marquay McDaniel for a 44-yard touchdown. Paredes then drilled the convert to push the Stamps lead to 10, where it would stay through the end of the first quarter.

Charleston Hughes announced his presence with authority in the second quarter, when — after Mitchell was intercepted by Sam Williams — he regained Calgary’s momentum with a violent sack on Glenn.

The first half’s all-Stamps theme continued, as Messam and Mitchell marched the Stamps into the end zone on a seven-play, 76-yard drive polished off by a 19-yard Mitchell-to-Kamar Jorden touchdown. The subsequent Paredes convert then gave Calgary the 17-0 lead it would take into halftime.

Saskatchewan emerged from the locker room a different team in the third quarter; after Glenn completed six of seven attempts, Riders running back Cameron Marshall forged his way into the Calgary end zone from five yards out. Tyler Crapigna then added a convert to cut the Stampeder lead to 10.

Glenn began to find favoured targets Naaman Roosevelt and Bakari Grant late in the third quarter, and the second play of the fourth quarter saw Crapigna split the uprights from 27 yards out to cut the Calgary lead to seven.

The Stampeder offence somewhat turned the tide on the ensuing drive, with Mitchell marching his team up to the Saskatchewan 35 before the Rider defence forced a field-goal attempt. After a Shane Bergman penalty pushed the Calgary offence back five yards, Paredes proved up to the task with a critical 47-yard field goal to restore the 10-point Stamps lead.

That field goal, coupled with a later 39-yard punt return by a clutch Roy Finch, stifled the Saskatchewan momentum and essentially killed the comeback attempt.

Five plays after Finch’s return set them up with quality field possession, the Stamps sealed the win with a one-yard Messam plunge into the end zone. The Paredes convert rounded out the night’s scoring and pushed the final to 27-10.

Beyond Hughes and his three sacks, James Vaughters also dominated — largely in the first half — on the Calgary D-line en route to a pair of sacks, while Saskatchewan linebacker Henoc Muamba paced all players with nine all-purpose tackles.

The Stamps will now have a week off to prepare for another home contest in a week’s time, when they will host the winless Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-4) on Saturday, while the Riders will return home to face the Toronto Argonauts (2-2) on the same day.
