CARTER’S PICK-SIX HELPS RIDERS TOP STAMPS; CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT

CALGARY — Duron Carter scored on a pick-six while the defence didn’t allow a touchdown, leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 30-7 win over the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night.

Punt returner Christion Jones and short-yardage quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. also scored for the Riders, who improve to .500 and officially clinch a playoff spot with the win. The victory at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium ended the Stamps’ 17-game winning streak on home field, and was the Riders’ first over Calgary in four years.

But on a damp, rainy night with plenty of storylines, nothing could overshadow Carter’s first start on defence. The CFL’s fifth-leading receiver was tested at boundary corner and passed with flying colours, standing up against Calgary’s top receivers while scoring the game-sealing pick-six.

Brandon Bridge and Andrew Buckley both took snaps for the Riders and Stamps respectively, marking the first time since 1984 (Gerry Dattilio and Greg Vavra) that two Canadian quarterbacks played in the same game for Calgary and Montreal. Bridge, who took over for Kevin Glenn in the first quarter, threw for 129 yards on 9-of-18 passing with two interceptions.

With the win, the Riders move into a tie with the Edmonton Eskimos for third in the West, while the Stamps have their 11-game winning streak snapped. Bo Levi Mitchell, meanwhile, falls to 56-9-2 as a starter after going 14-of-27 for 136 yards and two interceptions, eventually making way for Buckley in the fourth.

Stampeders sophomore linebacker Alex Singleton also made history in the loss, recording seven tackles to move past Kevin Eiben for the most tackles by a Canadian in a single season (115).

Much like the first two meetings between these West Division rivals, Friday’s contest featured two hard-hitting defences that would allow very little.

Charleston Hughes stymied the Riders early with his sixth sack against the Green and White this year alone, marking Calgary’s 12th of the season against Saskatchewan.

After just two possessions and three passing attempts by Glenn, the Riders looked to spark their offence with a quarterback change. And there was an immediate spark from the Canadian pivot, with Bridge’s first pass going to Bakari Grant for a 23-yard pickup to get the Riders over midfield for the first time in the game. But the drive stalled at the 50, forcing punter Josh Bartel onto the field for the third time in the first 15 minutes.

Through first quarter, the two teams combined for only 115 net yards (67 for the Stamps), six first downs and a single point off a Rob Maver punt.

Suddenly, on the first play of the second quarter, the Riders flipped a switch and it was game on. With Maver punting on third-and-seven, Jones waited for an opening before sprinting 60 yards for the score, putting the Riders ahead 7-1 on the game’s first touchdown.

A quick two-and-out got the ball back in the hands of Bridge, who leaned on Chad Owens in his first game as a Rider to move the sticks twice and set up a 26-yard field goal by Tyler Crapigna. Crapigna’s 17th-straight successful attempt made it a nine-point game and a 10-1 Riders lead early in the second quarter.

The Riders had a chance to break the game wide open when Carter, looking to play the man in Messam, had his hands on a pass that would have resulted in a pick-six the other way.

After punting and getting the football back, the Stamps went to work and created some positive momentum late in the half. Not long after a Rene Paredes field goal cut the deficit to 10-4, Bridge’s second-down pass was intercepted by Brandon Smith, putting the ball right back in the Stamps’ possession.

But the Rider defence, as it had all throughout the first half, responded in a big way. Mitchell’s throw on second down was intercepted by a leaping Ed Gainey, whose ninth interception of the season left the Stamps empty-handed and preserved the Riders’ lead heading to halftime.

The Stampeders opened the second half with their sixth two-and-out of the game, already one shy of a season-high. Meanwhile, after a long, efficient drive deep into Calgary territory, Crapigna’s 18th straight successful field goal restored the Riders’ nine-point lead midway through the quarter.

The early field goal was only the start of what would be the game’s biggest turning point, because on the very next offensive play, Kamar Jorden coughed up the football just before his knee hit the ground, setting the Riders up at the Stamps’ three-yard-line on Jovon Johnson‘s return.

While the Stamps’ defence fought tooth and nail, holding Cameron Marshall to a pair of one-yard runs, Adams Jr. came in and finished the drive on third-and-one, putting the Riders ahead 21-4 with the two-point conversion.

Another potential turning point came soon after. With the Riders already up three scores, Gainey appeared to have his second interception of the game on Mitchell, returning it all the way for what might have been the put-away touchdown. But the play was called back on a personal foul on the quarterback, giving the Stampeders the ball back and new life.

Paredes’ second field goal of the game cut the Stamps’ deficit to 21-7, making it a two-score game and keeping things within reach heading into the fourth quarter.

The game’s defining play came moments later, when Mitchell’s pass fell short while Carter cut off the route, setting up his blocks and running all the way back for the game-clinching touchdown.

While the Riders scored in all three ways — special teams, defence and offence — their defence was the backbone in the victory. In forcing Mitchell out of the game, the Riders allowed only 10 first downs and 168 yards of offence while forcing three turnovers.

They also held the Stampeders to a season-high eight two-and-outs.

The Riders return home to take on the Montreal Alouettes on Oct. 27, while the Stampeders get a long week before facing the Eskimos in a visit to Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 28.

ARGOS, BOMBERS EYE PLAYOFF POSITIONING IN SATURDAY CLASH AT BMO

TORONTO — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts have secured spots in the post-season, but both teams still have plenty to play for when they square off on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field.

A win for the Bombers would clinch their first home playoff date since 2011, while the Argos are still chasing the Ottawa REDBLACKS for top spot in the East and a bye to the division final.

The Bombers punched their ticket to the post-season last week with a 26-20 victory over the BC Lions. Winnipeg jumped out to an early two score lead and was able to hold off the hungry Leos until the final whistle.

It was the special teams and defence leading the way in the Winnipeg win. Kevin Fogg ran past an entire field of Lions’ defenders for an 88-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter, while T.J. Heath added a pick-six with just under 10 minutes remaining to put the game further out of reach for the Lions.

Winnipeg’s top receiver Darvin Adams left the game against BC with an upper body injury in the first quarter and did not return. Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea said that Adams will not be available for “a number of weeks,” but says there is a chance he will return sometime before the end of the year.

“I don’t want everyone to count him out,” O’Shea told BlueBombers.com. “I know he’s going to work hard and I know given his past history, he’s always become available earlier than expected.”

The Bombers suffered another devastating blow last week as defensive back Moe Leggett tore his Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the season.

Winnipeg will have some familiar faces back in the lineup for Week 18. Veteran receiver Weston Dressler will suit up for the first time since exiting the Bomber’s Week 14 win with an upper body injury. Dressler has been nagged by injury trouble all season and also missed four more games earlier in the year.

Ian Wild will also make his way back into the lineup on Saturday. The linebacker has not seen any on field action since exiting with an upper body injury back in Week 3 and will look to ease his way back into the lineup.

Former NFL receiver Chris Givens will also make his CFL debut in Toronto after spending a month on the practice roster. Givens is expected to see time at slotback and on kick returns in place of Ryan Lankford.

The Toronto Argonauts enter Saturday’s contest just one point behind the East-leading REDBLACKS with a game in hand.

Ottawa leapfrogged the Boatmen for top spot in the East after Toronto fell 30-27 to the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 17. Toronto scored the go-ahead touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the game, but the Esks thwarted the Argos’ comeback efforts by scoring a major with just under a minute to go for the win.

S.J. Green led all receivers with 159 yards and a touchdown on 13 catches while quarterback Ricky Ray completed 32 of 42 passes for 362 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

Green received Shaw Top Performer honours for the fourth time this season.

First-year running back James Wilder Jr. has been cleared to play and will be back in action on Saturday after missing last week’s contest against the Esks. Wilder was placed on the one game injured list after leaving the Argos’ Week 16 contest against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

While the Argos find themselves in a good position and are within striking distance of the REDBLACKS, their momentum heading into the playoffs has slowed down after dropping their past two games.

Green knows that now is the time for his team to step up.

“We’ve come a long way this season,” Green told Argonauts.ca. “We beat ourselves up a lot… we’ve lost games we shouldn’t have lost. We’re at a point in the season now where those mistakes are magnified and mistakes can’t happen because they’re going to cost us games, cost us playoff positioning. We have to be locked in.”

The Argos’ secondary gets a boost for Saturday’s contest, with veteran corner Akwasi Owusu-Ansah back in the lineup to play boundary corner. That moves rookie Alden Darby Jr. over the field corner and Mitchell White over to halfback.

While Shawn Lemon returned to practice this week, the Argos will have to wait at least another week to get their talented pass rusher back on the D-line. Lemon has been on the six-game injured list since Labour Day back in Week 11.

The Bombers have won their last three games against the Argos. Their most recent victory over the Double Blue was back in Week 3. Andrew Harris had two rushing touchdowns in the Bombers’ 33-25 win at Investors Group Field. Winnipeg jumped out to an early lead after Ryan Lankford ran for a 105-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff.

The Skinny:

All eyes will be on Andrew Harris against the Argos, and during the Bombers’ last three games of the season, as the running back has a chance to become the first players in CFL history to reach 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season.

Harris must average 61.3 receiving yards per game and 43 rushing yards per game in his last three contests to achieve the incredible feat. The 30-year-old also only needs six more catches to become the fifth player in Bombers history to reach 100 catches in one season.

Even though the Bombers have secured a playoff spot, O’Shea said earlier this week that he has not yet thought about resting players to prepare of the post-season.

BANKS’ BIG DAY LEADS TICATS TO VICTORY AGAINST ALS

MONTREAL — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats scored 40-straight points on the road to hand the Montreal Alouettes a 43-16 loss on Sunday. While the Ticats have been eliminated from playoff contention, the team took big steps towards finishing the season on a positive note.

Brandon Banks created big plays all game long for the Ticats, leading his team in receiving and dominating in the return game with 240 all-purpose yards. The dynamic weapon scored two touchdowns over 60 yards, contributing a 65-yard punt return score and a 65-yard touchdown catch.

Banks finished the game with six catches for 129 yards, his fourth-straight game with over 100 yards receiving.

Jeremiah Masoli further solidified his place as Hamilton’s starting quarterback for the rest of the season, finishing with 320 passing yards and two touchdown throws.

Kicker Kenny Allen remained perfect for Hamilton in his second CFL game, making all five field goal attempts.

Things did not start out on a positive note for the Als on offence, as Darian Durant was intercepted on just the team’s second drive of the game. Ticats defensive back Don Unamba got his hands on the ball to secure his second pick of the season, returning it 11 yards into Montreal territory.

The Ticats capitalized on the turnover and favourable field position, taking the early lead with a 15-yard chip shot field goal from kicker Kenny Allen.

Durant got the Als’ offence going on the following drive, however, and the veteran quarterback bounced back from his earlier interception by leading a 5-play, 80-yard drive to grab the lead.

Durant hooked up with receiver Samuel Giguère for a 17-yard gain before finding Ernest Jackson open in the middle of the end zone for the 15-yard touchdown strike. The score was Jackson’s sixth touchdown catch of the season.

Hamilton responded on offence after Banks took a short catch and turned it into a 22-yard gain. Masoli then found receiver Shamawd Chambers on a 12-yard pass to set up a 48-yard Allen field goal, bringing the Ticats within a point.

The Ticats’ defence forced a Montreal punt on their next drive after linebacker Simoni Lawrence brought Durant down for an 11-yard sack. Banks used his elite speed to return the punt 31 yards, and a 19-yard run from Masoli put Allen in range to add a 45-yard field goal, giving Hamilton their first lead of the game.

The Als’ offence continued to have difficulties moving the ball against Hamilton’s tough defence, and another quick two-and-out led to a game-changing play for the Ticats. Banks once again showed how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands, returning the Boris Bede punt for an incredible 65-yard touchdown to help give Hamilton the 16-7 lead.

The return touchdown was the 11th of Banks’ CFL career, and it was the first return touchdown of the season for the Ticats. Banks also led the Ticats in receiving in the first half, logging three catches for 49 yards.

While Hamilton jumped ahead in the opening half, it was their defence and special teams that made the difference. The Ticats’ offence was forced to settle for their fourth field goal of the half after another drive stalled, but in just his second career CFL game, kicker Kenny Allen remained perfect on every attempt.

Allen knocked through a 28-yard field goal to give Hamilton the 19-7 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.

Banks even found a way to impact the game when the ball was not in his hands, as a foot race down the right side of the field drew a crucial pass interference penalty. The 48-yard penalty on Als defensive back Tevaughn Campbell set the Ticats’ offence up just inside Montreal’s 15-yard line.

Masoli wasted no time converting the penalty into points for Hamilton, finding receiver Mike Jones near the right side the end zone for the 14-yard touchdown pass. Jones was initially ruled out of bounds, but upon further review it was determined that the receiver somehow managed to get his knee down in bounds with possession.

The impressive touchdown catch was the very first of Jones’ CFL career, giving Hamilton the 26-7 lead heading into half-time.

Montreal elected to make a change at quarterback after the offence failed to gain a single first down in the second quarter, and Matthew Shiltz took over for Durant after the half.

The young quarterback did not fare much better early on, as Shiltz was picked off in the end zone while attempting to find receiver T.J. Graham deep down the field. Defensive back Cariel Brooks picked off the pass for his first interception of the season.

Banks continued his big performance on Hamilton’s next drive, beating Tevaughn Campbell deep down the right sideline for a highlight-reel 65-yard touchdown catch. Banks reeled in the pass over his shoulder against the taller defender before taking it an extra 17 yards into the end zone. The score was Banks’ fourth touchdown catch over 50 yards this season, and it capped off a three-play, 85-yard drive to extend the Ticats’ lead.

Hamilton extended their lead once again at the start of the fourth quarter when Allen made his fifth-straight kick of the game, a 35-yard field goal that put the Ticats on top 36-7.

The Ticats’ defence continued to frustrate the Als in the second half, and Hamilton would put together another long scoring drive after getting the ball back on offence.

Masoli led a six-play, 84-yard drive to set up a four-yard touchdown run from Alex Green, his fourth score of the season. The convert kick from Allen put Hamilton on top 43-7, making it 40-straight points for the Ticats after surrendering the early touchdown.

The Als got on the board for the first time since the opening quarter after Shiltz orchestrated a 79-yard scoring drive, with the quarterback using his arm and legs to bring Montreal’s offence into scoring territory. Running back Tyrell Sutton finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and Shiltz completed the two-point convert to Jackson to bring the score to 43-15.

Montreal added another point to their total on the following play when Hamilton conceded the single after Bede’s kickoff went into the end zone, but it was much too late.

Week 19 will see the the Alouettes travel to Regina to take on the Roughriders on Friday night, while the Ticats will face the Ottawa REDBLACKS on the road.

League Betting Notes

Analysis

It was another banner week for road teams in the Canadian Football League, as it was a clean sweep for the away teams against the number at 4-0 ATS. Only Toronto (8-9) protected their home field, edging Winnipeg (11-5) by a 29-28 count. However, the Blue Bombers were able to hang on for their fifth cover across the past six games, and ninth cover over the past 11.

The Argos reclaimed first place in the East Division by a half-game over idle Ottawa (7-9-1). Toronto will have Week 19 off before traveling to meet the BC Lions (6-10) on Nov. 4 in the final weekend of the regular season. The 'over' hit for the Argos this past weekend, and the total has gone over in five of the past six for the division leaders.

Calgary (13-2-1) suffered its first loss since July 14, falling 30-7 at McMahon Stadium against Saskatchewan (9-7). Even more shocking, QB Bo Levi Mitchell struggled with just 14 completions on 27 attempts for 136 yards and two interceptions, perhaps his shoulder hurting more than he initially let on. Similarly in 2014, the Stamps lost at home to the Blue Bombers of Winnipeg late in the season, and that served as a wake-up call for the eventual Grey Cup champs that season. Will history repeat itself?

Team Betting Notes

-- Hamilton (5-11) hammered Montreal (3-13) to likely help them avoid the basement in the East Division for the season. The Tiger-Cats might be a dismal 1-7 at Tim Horton's Field this season, but they're an impressive 4-4 SU on the road. After going 0-3 ATS in their first three forays from home the Ti-Cats have covered five in a row on the road. They have a quick turnaround before meeting the RedBlacks on Friday in Canada's capital city. They won 26-22 in Ottawa back on Sept. 9.

-- The 30-7 win for the Roughriders was their fourth straight win away from home, and they're 3-1 ATS during the span. Unfortunately for Saskatchewan they will be home for their final two regular season outings.

-- BC started out 4-1 SU/3-2 ATS through the first five games, but they have been in freefall ever since. The Lions have dropped five in a row, going 0-5 ATS during the span, and they're 2-9 SU over the past 11 while failing to cover eight of their past nine. They'll meet Winnipeg on Saturday on the road. They just lost to the Bombers on their field by a 26-20 score back on Oct. 14, and they're 0-2 ATS in two previous meetings this season.

-- Edmonton (10-6) continued its up and down season. After starting out 7-0 SU, the Eskimos dropped six in a row before recovering to win three in a row. The 'over' has also hit during each of the wins for the Esks. They'll battle for Alberta next Saturday looking to avenge a pair of losses Sept. 4-9 in a home-and-home with the Stamps.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 19
October 24, 2017

This past weekend’s CFL betting action started with Saskatchewan stunning Calgary 30-7 on Friday night as a 10-point road underdog to end the Stampeders straight-up 11-game winning streak. The Roughriders’ upset also sealed up the final berth for this season’s playoffs.

Saturday’s action started with Toronto sneaking past Winnipeg 29-28 as a three-point favorite at home. Later that day, Edmonton topped British Columbia 35-29 in overtime as a slight one-point road underdog. Week 18 in the CFL came to a close on Sunday with Hamilton running all over Montreal 43-16 as a three-point road favorite.

Friday, Oct. 27

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-11 SU, 8-8 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (7-9-1 SU, 12-5 ATS)

Game Overview

Hamilton is playing for pride in this one with just five straight-up wins on the year, but it also has some momentum coming into this game with a SU 5-3 record over its last eight games while going 6-2 against the spread. Jeremiah Masoli threw for 320 yards and two scores in Sunday’s lopsided win against Montreal and he added another 28 yards on the ground running the ball four times.

The RedBlacks are still battling Toronto for the East Division title heading into the final two weeks of the season. They have won three out of their last five games SU while going 4-1 ATS. The total has gone OVER in road wins against BC and Saskatchewan in Ottawa’s last two games after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in 12 of its previous 13 games. Heading into last week’s bye, it had lost four of its last five home games SU.

Betting Trends

-- The road team in this East Division tilt has won the last four meetings both SU and ATS including both games played earlier this season. The total stayed UNDER the closing line in both of those games after going OVER in the previous four meetings.

Game Overview

Montreal has been riding out the string for quite so time now in what has turned into a nine-game losing streak both SU and ATS. Things have gotten increasingly more lopsided as this losing grew in numbers and going back to a 32-4 loss to Ottawa on Aug. 31, the Alouettes have been outscored by an average margin of 18 points a game. They have scored a grand total of 103 points in those seven losses.

The Roughriders are flying high right now as one of just two CFL teams to post a SU victory against the league’s top team this season. Saskatchewan clinched that final playoff spot with last Friday’s big win and it still has its sights set on moving up the standings in the West with a pair of wins and some help. Wide receiver Duron Carter lined up at cornerback on defense in that game and he returned a Bo Levi Mitchell interception for a score.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal has won the last three meetings SU including a tight 17-16 victory this season back in Week 1 as a seven-point home favorite. The Alouettes also hold a 7-3 edge ATS in the last 10 games with the total staying UNDER in six of the last nine meetings.

Game Overview

With BC officially eliminated from postseason contention, you have to question just how motivated the Lions will be on Saturday in the midst of a five-game losing streak both SU and ATS. They have remained competitive during this slide with four losses by six points or less. Jeremiah Johnson led the team in rushing with 32 yards on nine carries in last week’s loss to Edmonton and he also caught six passes for 44 yards.

The Blue Bombers are still trying to lock up home field advantage in the West for the opening round of the playoffs in light of last week’s loss. Weston Dressler had a big day catching the ball in that losing cause with eight catches for 129 yards and a touchdown. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols completed 75.8 percent of his 33 passing attempts for 268 yards to raise his season total to 4,442 as the third leading passer in the CFL.

Game Overview

With the pressure of keeping that extended SU winning streak alive gone following that Week 18 loss, Calgary can begin the process of preparing for a Grey Cup title run as the top seed in the CFL. Looking back at last season’s run to the top spot in the regular season; the Stampeders saw their SU 14-game winning streak also come to an end in a Week 20 loss to Montreal.

Edmonton needs a win in this game to keep its chances of hosting a playoff game alive. Going back to a Week 16 victory against Montreal on the road, the Eskimos have piled up an average of 35.7 points over their last three games. Mike Reilly added 397 more passing yards to his league-high 5,252 yards in last week’s win and Adarius Bowman caught nine passes for 136 yards and a score to lead all receivers.
