NCAAF opening line report: Alabama massive faves over scrappy Mississippi State

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 35-28 home win over Texas A&M as a 10-point ‘dog.

The college football season plows into Week 11 with some key matchups as the BCS standings and the College Football Playoff possibilities continue taking shape. We talk about opening lines on a few games with John Lester, senior lines manager for offshore sportsbook Bookmaker.eu.

No. 3 Michigan Wolverines at Iowa Hawkeyes (+17.5)

Michigan hasn’t broken too much of a sweat all season, and certainly didn’t need to worry much during Week 10. The Wolverines (9-0 SU, 5-4 ATS) hammered Maryland 59-3 Saturday as a 29.5-point home favorite, stemming a 1-3 ATS in the process.

Iowa (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS) looks more like Michigan’s next victim than the next opponent. The Hawkeyes had a bye week to prepare for Penn State, but still got shellacked 41-14 as a 6.5-point road underdog Saturday. But Lester warned against discounting the Hawkeyes.

“This may not be the week, but it seems like Kirk Ferentz and his kids pull off a big upset every year,” Lester said. “Everybody is going to give the undefeateds their best shots from here on out, so Michigan must be focused here. The Wolverines are facing another three-score spread, and they’ve been Jekyll-and-Hyde covering those.”

This will be Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s first meeting with Iowa, as the two schools last squared off in the 2013 season, a 24-21 Iowa victory in which the Wolverines cashed as a 6-point road pup.

No. 25 Baylor Bears at No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners (-14)

Two weeks ago. Baylor was undefeated, ranked sixth and thoroughly in the hunt for a CFP playoff berth. Not anymore. After tumbling at Texas 35-34 laying 4 points in Week 9, the Bears (6-2 SU, 2-6 ATS) got blasted Saturday by Texas Christian, losing 62-22 as a 7-point home chalk.

Conversely, Oklahoma has won six in a row after a bump 1-2 start. The Sooners (7-2 SU, 3-6 ATS) held off Iowa State last Thursday 34-24, falling well short as a 21-point fave. Oklahoma beat Baylor 44-34 catching 1.5 points on the road last year, ending a 4-0 ATS surge by the Bears in this rivalry (3-1 SU).

“We saw Baylor unravel at the seams last weekend, and this could be a tough one to get up for now that the losing skid is rolling,” Lester said. “That said, Oklahoma has been winning, but it hasn’t looked unbeatable against some suspect competition of late.”

Southern California Trojans at No. 4 Washington Huskies (-8)

Washington aims to keep its perfect record, along with its Pac-12 and CFP hopes, rolling along in Week 11. The Huskies (9-0 SU, 5-4 ATS) boatraced California 66-27 Saturday night giving 19 points on the road.

Southern Cal has seemingly righted its ship after a rocky 1-3 SU and ATS start. The Trojans (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) have peeled off five consecutive victories (4-1 ATS), including Saturday’s 45-20 rout of Oregon as a hefty 17-point home chalk.

Last year, Washington edged USC 17-12, falling well short as a 17-point road favorite.

“USC is going to have to play a perfect game to pull off the upset in Washington,” Lester said. “The BCS committee isn’t giving the Huskies much respect, but from what we’ve see, they are on an even playing field with a team like Michigan. The Trojans have been rolling, but Washington is a competitive and complete team, so the big spread is warranted.”

Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-29)

Alabama hasn’t lost a game since Sept. 19, 2015, a stretch in which it has gone 21-0 SU and 14-7 ATS. On Saturday night, the Crimson Tide got one of their toughest tests of that streak, as they were locked in a 0-0 tie at Louisiana State into the fourth quarter. But ‘Bama (9-0 SU, 7-2 ATS) came away with a 10-0 win and cover as a 7-point favorite.

A couple of weeks ago, Mississippi State was 2-5 SU and looked like it would be little more than a footnote for Alabama. That might still be the case, but the Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 35-28 home win over Texas A&M as a 10-point ‘dog.

“Both teams are coming off emotionally draining wins, but it’s safe to say the Tide are better equipped to regroup,” Lester said. “Last week was the first in a while that we didn’t see heavy Alabama action, but the underdog bettors didn’t collect, so we don’t expect a lot of favorite fading again this week, despite the massive spread.”

The Tide had little trouble with the Bulldogs last year, rolling 31-6 as a 7-point road chalk.

Western Michigan Broncos at Kent State Golden Flashes (+21, 55)

Senior wide receiver Corey Davis made history last week for Western Michigan and hopes to set another record when the 21st-ranked Broncos visit Kent State on Tuesday for a Mid-American Conference contest. The highly regarded NFL prospect broke the MAC record for receiving yards in a game with 272 as Western Michigan rolled over Ball State 52-20 to open at 9-0 for the first time.

Davis also is tied with Marshall’s Darius Watts for the MAC record with 47 career touchdown receptions and is just one of three major weapons, along with quarterback Zach Terrell and running back Jarvion Franklin, for the Broncos. Western Michigan has won 11 in a row dating back to last season and ranked 23rd in the first College Football Playoff rankings. “We can’t control where we’re rated or the playoff poll or anything like that,” Terrell told reporters. “For us, that’s just outside noise. We’re just focused on getting better each and every day.” Kent State knocked off Central Michigan 27-24 in its last game on Oct. 29 and will test the Broncos with the top pass efficiency defense in the conference.

WEATHER REPORT: There is a 65 percent chance of rain showers at kickoff tonight at Dix Stadium, increasing to 85 percent for the second half. Temperatures will be in the 50's and wind will not be a factor.

ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN (9-0 SU, 7-2 ATS, 5-4 O/U): Terrell finished with at least 300 passing yards for the third time in four games last Tuesday against Ball State and has completed 71.6 percent of his passes with an impressive 23 TD tosses and just one interception. Franklin went over 1,000 yards for the season after his fifth straight contest with 100 or more last week and Davis has recorded 61 receptions for 1,011 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensive back Darius Phillips has returned three interceptions for scores this season, including a 75-yarder last week, to set a school record.

ABOUT KENT STATE (3-6 SU, 5-4 ATS, 5-4 O/U): Quarterback Nick Holley rushed for 144 yards in the win over Central Michigan and leads the team with 775 overall to go along with nine touchdowns on the ground. Freshman Justin Rankin is second on the team in rushing (381 yards, two TDs) after gaining 78 yards in his last contest and is the top receiver with 24 catches for 301 yards. Just two of the Golden Flashes’ five MAC opponents have completed better than 50 percent of their passes while Kent State stands second in the league in total defense (350.7 yards) and third in rushing defense (145.9).

Eastern Michigan rallies from 21 points down to beat Ball St
November 8, 2016

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) Brogan Roback completed 37 of 71 passes for a career-high 468 yards and three touchdowns and Eastern Michigan overcame a 21-point first-quarter deficit to beat Ball State 48-41 on Tuesday night.

Ball State took a 41-40 lead with 1:35 remaining on Riley Neal's quarterback sneak. Eastern Michigan answered with an eight-play, 86-yard drive in just over a minute. Roback escaped pressure to find John Niupalau for a 35-yard gain and Ian Eriksen punched it in from the 1 with 32 seconds left. Ball State drove it to midfield, but Neal's Hail Mary attempt was intercepted by DaQuan Pace.

Eriksen finished with 25 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns for Eastern Michigan (6-4, 3-3 Mid-American), which became bowl eligible for the first time since 1995. Dieuly Aristilde caught six passes for 107 yards and Dan Buschman made two grabs for touchdowns.

Eastern Michigan took its first lead at 33-28 with 4:34 left in the third after Sergio Bailey II broke a tackle and scored a 16-yard touchdown.

Neal was 30-of-50 passing for 393 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions for Ball State (4-6, 1-5). KeVonn Mabon caught 12 passes for 149 yards and had three total touchdowns. The Cardinals were hurt by five turnovers - four in the second half.

W. Michigan now 10-0, but Kent covers

KENT, Ohio (AP) Western Michigan's perfect season is still afloat.

On a rainy night, the team that lives to ''Row the Boat'' stayed above water and unbeaten.

Jarvion Franklin rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown and Fabian Johnson added a career-high 125 yards as the No. 14 Broncos rallied for a 37-21 win over Kent State on Tuesday night to become the nation's first 10-win team.

Franklin's 19-yard TD with 8:27 helped the Broncos (10-0, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) finally put away the upset-minded Golden Flashes (3-7, 2-4), who jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

But Western Michigan, abiding by coach P.J. Fleck's ''Row the Boat'' mantra, kept plugging away and scored 21 straight points before swinging the game with a safety in the fourth.

''That's something we didn't anticipate,'' Franklin said of the 14-point hole. ''But we just kept our oars in the water, stayed true to the process and believed we deserve to be here.''

The Broncos are the highest-ranked MAC school in the AP Top 25 poll since 2008 and have their sights on a major bowl bid. They moved to No. 21 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings just before kickoff and then shook off their biggest deficit this season.

''I've never been more proud of a football team in my entire career because they had everything on the line,'' Fleck said. ''We're going to get everybody's best shot. We're always now on a national stage. Somebody wants to be the team to knock us off, and we know that.''

Quarterback Zach Terrell scored on a 1-yard keeper in the third quarter, capping a 20-play drive, to give Western Michigan its first lead at 19-14 before he threw a pass to Johnson for the 2-point conversion.

Kent State didn't fold and responded with an 83-yard drive, tying it on freshman Justin Rankin's 20-yard run.

Western Michigan's next drive stalled near mid-field, but the Broncos downed a punt at Kent State's 1, and on the next play linebacker Robert Spillane stuffed Rankin in the end zone for two points.

''The play of the game,'' Fleck said.

The Broncos got the ball back, and Johnson, primarily a blocking back, picked up 35 yards on four carries before Franklin scored his 39th career TD, tying the school record held by Jerome Persell (1976-79).

Kent State's defense was missing its best player as star safety Nate Holley was suspended indefinitely following his arrest on felony kidnapping charges.

Holley's twin brother, Nick, Kent State's quarterback, rushed for 141 yards.

''It was a tough, hard-nosed football game,'' Kent State head coach Paul Haynes said. ''Our guys fought like crazy for as long as we could.''

The Broncos were the last team in the country to commit a turnover, and that didn't come until their seventh game. But Franklin's fumble on their first offensive play put them behind.

Franklin had the ball jarred loose and it was picked up by Kent State defensive back Najee Murray, who returned it 47 yards to make it 7-0 just 2:07 into the game.

''That really lit a fire in me,'' Franklin said.

Western Michigan had not trailed by more than seven all season, and showing the kind of poise Fleck preaches daily, the Broncos scored the next 13, pulling within one on Butch Hampton's 23-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

GROUND AND POUND

Most of the game was played in a light rain, which got heavy at times and made it difficult to throw. Western Michigan turned to its running game and picked up 329 yards rushing.

''We knew we would have to run the ball,'' Fleck said. ''We're a two-dimensional team. We can beat you either way. We don't have to rely on one.''

THE TAKEAWAY

Western Michigan: A national title may be out of the question, but the Broncos, who were 1-11 four years ago, are in a class with Alabama, Michigan, Clemson and Washington as the only unbeaten teams left. They showed their balance as star wide receiver Corey Davis was held to one catch for 18 yards after getting 12 for 272 yards last week.

Kent State: Once again, the Golden Flashes played well but couldn't finish. Four of their losses have been by 15 combined points.

Western Michigan: The Broncos get back on a ''normal'' schedule and return home on Nov. 19 to play Buffalo, which is just 2-7.

Kent State: The Golden Flashes play again next Tuesday night, when they visit Bowling Green, 0-5 in the conference and 1-8 overall.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

One personal note before I start today; two people who I thought were friends of mine stopped talking to me during the last few months because of the Presidential election— I wouldn’t vote for the person they support.

I didn’t and still don’t understand that: I dislike both candidates, so I lost two “friends” for being impartial. Guess they weren’t friends after all. So be it. Life is too short for such BS.

On to mid-week musings……..

13) NFL teams are 17-9 vs spread this year in the game before their bye week; they’re 9-5-2 vs spread coming off a bye.

12) Cincinnati Bengals are 1-12 in their last 13 visits to New Jersey, 0-3 against the Giants, 1-9 against Jets. They started this season in the Garden State with a 23-22 against the Jets.

11) Replay official in the San Jose State-Boise State game Saturday night was an actual rocket scientist, much like Carrot Top’s dad— the madcap comedian’s dad worked for NASA.

10) Yoenis Cespedes opted out of the last two years of his, 2-year, $47.5M deal with the Mets, so he thinks he can do better than that.

How much money do you really need? Unless he does not like playing for the Mets, I’d take their $47.5M and be happy. By renegotiating, he is helming his agents more than he his helping himself.

9) Showtime’s supposed documentary on Ben Simmons was a major disappointment; it was more of an infomercial than a documentary.

How do you do a 90-minute movie about a basketball player and not talk to his high school or college coach? I don’t care what his parents or his hangers-on think; none of them will ever utter a discouraging word, lest they offend the meal ticket.

Ben Simmons made becoming a multi-millionaire sound like quite a pain in the butt— lot of people wouldn’t mind changing places with him.

8) SEC West is 9-1 vs SEC East this year, with only loss Kentucky’s win over Mississippi State.

7) Colorado Rockies hired Bud Black as manager, Arizona hired Torey Lovullo. Glad to see the Rockies hire a former pitcher as their manager- they’ve got decent young talent.

6) Miami Dolphins haven’t turned ball in their last three games, first that has happened in 19 years- those three games were all at home- their next two games are in southern California. Dolphins are 0-3 on the road this year.

5) Queens College 75, VCU 73— College hoop teams play these exhibitions against teams they’re not supposed to lose to; this is the only one I’ve seen so far this fall where the D-I team lost.

4) NFL favorites of 7+ points this year are 17-10-1 vs spread.

3) Ironic that the Buffalo Bills played this Monday night, the night before Election Day. The Pagula family bought the Bills a few years ago, keeping the franchise in western New York.

Their main competition for buying the Bills back then?

Donald Trump.

2) Comedian Don Rickles turned 90 years old this week, so congrats to him on that: I never thought insulting people was all that funny, but people seem to like him.

1— I’m convinced that running a marathon isn’t healthy; no way is running 26 miles at one time good for you. Remember, the person in ancient mythology who made the marathon famous ran 26 miles to deliver an important message- as soon as he delivered the message, he collapsed and died.

If he had stopped on the way and had a burger and fries, he would have survived. Maybe had a milkshake, too.

NIU won last six games with Toledo (4-2 vs spread), scoring 40.5 pts/game; Huskies are 4-1 vs spread in MAC play- they’re 8-4 as an underdog with Carney, 2-3 this season. A&M QB Knight out for regular season
November 8, 2016

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight will miss the rest of the regular season with a right shoulder injury.

Knight was injured on Saturday in the 10th-ranked Aggies loss to Mississippi State. Coach Kevin Sumlin announced that he wouldn't return for the regular season, but says they expect him to return for Texas A&M's bowl game. Sumlin added that Knight does not need surgery, but did not provide further details on his injury.

With Knight out the Aggies will go with Jake Hubenak, a junior who has appeared in three games this season. Hubenak was 11 of 17 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Texas A&M's 35-28 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday.

Knight is in his first season with the Aggies after transferring as a graduate student from Oklahoma. He threw for 1,911 yards and 13 touchdowns and ran for 583 yards and 10 more scores.

The Aggies host Mississippi on Saturday.
