First Coach to be Fired
August 26, 2016
NFL fans know going into every year that the 32 head coaches who begin the season all aren't likely to finish the year. It's always a fun discussion as to what coach will be relieved of his duties first, and Sportsbook.ag has odds on that for bettors again this season. It's a solid list with the virtual locks to finish the year like Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick offering the biggest odds (+30000 and +50000 respectively), but there are some situations out there that could pay off nicely for bettors.
Sportsbook.ag First NFL Head Coach to Leave Odds
Detroit's Jim Caldwell (+500) and San Diego's Mike McCoy (+550) top the list as the favorites to be gone first and both are dealing with some tough situations in their respective organizations. Caldwell lost his best playmaker Calvin Johnson to retirement this off-season, and the leftover weapons around QB Matt Stafford in Detroit are pretty thin. Caldwell's been victimized by a star player being injured/gone before as he was fired from the Colts head coaching job after the 2011 season when QB Peyton Manning was lost for the year. It would be a cruel repeat of history for Caldwell to experience that again, but there are many reasons he's the favorite on this list.
McCoy doesn't exactly have a talented team out there in San Diego either, but growing discourse about the team's future in the city and how soon they likely move out of San Diego could cement his future on the unemployment line. The Chargers are projected to be the worst team in the AFC West and if they don't get off to at least a decent start to the year, it will be McCoy's head that rolls first.
Aside from those two guys, three interesting names here are Chuck Pagano of the Colts (+1200), Mike Mularkey of the Titans (+1800), and Marvin Lewis of the Bengals (+4000).
Indianapolis had a dreadful 2015 campaign after rising through the ranks of the AFC the previous few seasons and making the AFC Championship in 2014. The Colts know they are in win-now mode with QB Andrew Luck entering his prime and if we see another bad start from this team, management might decide the time is right to get a new voice in the locker room. Of all the 32 coaches in the league, Pagano's probably the one that needs to get off to a fast start in 2016.
Mike Mularkey is in his second year of trying to rebuild the Titans franchise, but his head coaching history isn't exactly good and Tennessee does not want to suffer through another 3-13 or 4-12 campaign. The Titans aren't likely to compete for the Super Bowl or even a playoff spot this year, but showing significant improvement and finishing around the .500 mark is the most realistic goal the organization can have in 2016. If that becomes very “unrealistic” by the time mid-October arrives, Mularkey will be gone.
And then there is the Bengals Marvin Lewis, who at times seems invincible within the Cincinnati organization, unable to get let go despite of his results. The Bengals have high aspirations for this year, wanting and having the talent able to win it all, but this team can't get out of its own way in the big games with Marvin Lewis at the helm.
It's great that he's led the Bengals to five consecutive playoff appearances, but an 0-5 SU record in those playoff games and a winless playoff record overall during his now 14-year tenure as head coach means something has to change soon. If the Bengals get off to a horrific start out of the gates at something like 1-5 or 2-6 SU, we could very easily see this change made.
