ESKS GROUND GAME OUT-MUSCLES TICATS IN EASTERN SEMI

HAMILTON – John White was almost unstoppable as he rushed for 165 yards on 19 carries as the Edmonton Eskimos topped a feisty Hamilton Tiger-Cats squad 24-21 in the 2016 Eastern Semi-Final Sunday afternoon at Tim Hortons Field.

A first half dominated by the Eskimos led to a furious comeback by Hamilton in the second half but with under two minutes left in a tie game, Zach Collaros tossed an interception that led to a 9-yard Sean Whyte field goal with 10 seconds remaining.

The Eskimos will now travel to Ottawa next Sunday to take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the Eastern Final at TD Place.

The big question mark will be under centre after Mike Reilly left midway through the third quarter with an injury. James Franklin entered and helped close out the game for the Esks.

Perhaps even more important than a strong start was the coin toss in this one with the wind coming off the southwest at between 25 and 35 miles per hour. Hamilton won the toss and deferred to the second half.

The Tiger-Cats took possession first with Zach Collaros quickly putting together a 32-yard drive but on a third down gamble and a yard to go inside the Edmonton 40, Hamilton elected not to kick the field goal with the wind and go for it. They were stuffed and turned the ball over to put Reilly and the Eskimos offence on the field.

When they did, the made sure that their stud running back, John White, helped navigate them through the gusting winds. White contributed 37 yards of a 77-yard touchdown march where he powered his way to an 11-yard touchdown to strike first as Edmonton took a 7-0 lead with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Hamilton entered the game with a receiving corps that was almost entirely different than the one that started the year. Injuries to three star receivers who were poised for 1,000 yards forced some late-season roster juggling but opened up opportunities to a host of newcomers. One of those new arrivals was Brian Tyms, who helped the Ticats get on the board late in the first quarter as they tried to attack the Esks secondary while they still had the wind.

Tyms hauled in a 13-yard pass followed immediately by a 47-yard catch-and-run that set the Ticats up inside the Edmonton 10 yard line. A pair of incompletions followed however, and the Ticats were forced to settle for a Brett Maher field goal.

Edmonton made the ‘Cats pay for the missed opportunity on the ensuing possession once again letting White do the talking. Completions of 10-yard plus from Reilly to Mike Miller and Derel Walker preceded a pass-interference call on Chris Davis. White then took a handoff, brushed off a defender and accelerated as hit pay dirt on a 19-yard rush to expand the Esks lead. The wind aided a 94-yard ensuing kickoff for a single point for a 15-3 Eskimo lead with 10:05 remaining in the half.

With Hamilton in need of a momentum swing, the got a quick two-and-out off Reilly’s next series and with Edmonton punting from their own 33-yard line, DB Terrell Davis broke through and blocked a Grant Shaw boot which set Collaros and the offence up at the Esks’ 27-yard line.

Once again, the Ticats settled for a field goal but this time Maher pushed a 35-yard attempt wide right and Esks RB Shakir Bell negated the single point by returning it to the Hamilton 31-yard line.

Before halftime, the Esks chalked up three more almost single-handedly off of White who ripped off runs of 19, 9 and 29 right through the teeth of the Hamilton defence. White finished the half with 110 total yards.

The Tiger-Cats elected to defer the wind to the fourth quarter, putting pressure on their defence to hold the Esks within striking distance. A massive lift was given on Hamilton’s first possession of the half when Collaros and RB CJ Gable marched the Ticats to an 8-play drive which Gable capped off with a 2-yard TD plunge. Maher missed the extra point but the lead was cut to 18-9.

Each respective defence held tough with the Esks finally getting on the board in the second half with 2:43 remaining when Sean Whyte punched a 42-yarder through the uprights, after being set up by a 32-yard Adarius Bowman reception.

As the quarter came to a close, injuries started to once again creep up on the ‘Cats. Two Canadians, safety Courtney Stephen and his backup Mike Daly both left the game with injury forcing Kent Austin and his staff to toy with the ratio mid-game.

Offensively, the Ticats started running a set for backup Jeremiah Masoli who adds a more athletic dimension to their attack. Misoli dropped back in a rare first-down situation and stepped into a throw to WR Spencer Watt down the sideline who muscled his way 46 yards down to the Edmonton 17 yard line.

Once again, however, the only mustered a field goal, this one from 24-yards out to cut the Eskimos lead to 21-12.

Reilly left midway through the fourth and went almost immediately to the locker room as trainers tended to what seemed to be his left shoulder. He did not return. When he exited the game he was 10 of 19 for 133 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

With Reilly on the bench, the ‘Cats clawed back into the game. A 3rd down gamble paid off when an onside punt recovered by Jermaine Robinson set the Ticats up with a fresh set of downs. Collaros then moved Gable out to the slot where he hauled in a throw-behind for 34 yards. Masoli took it in from two yards out to close the gap. A successful two-point conversion and a monstor 89-yard kick by Maher with the wind tied the game up at 21 with just over 4 minutes remaining.

Franklin remained in the game and on the following series calmly delivered a pass to Brandon Zylstra for a first down before handing off to White for another 20 yards on the ground to get into Hamilton territory at the three-minute warning.

With under two minutes remaining and the game in the balance, the Tiger-Cats had a 19-yard gain wiped away by a holding call on Peter Dyakowski and on second-and-long, Collaros threw an interception into the hands of DB Kenny Ladler that would lead to the game-winning points.

White rumbled for another first down to set up the game-winning field goal.

WESTERN SEMI-FINAL

LIONS FLIP THE SCRIPT; SCORE LATE TO WIN WESTERN SEMI

VANCOUVER — Just when it looked like everything was going according to the script, Jonathon Jennings had other ideas.

The 24-year-old sophomore quarterback overcame two first-quarter turnovers and a 28-12 third-quarter deficit to lead the Lions to a 32-31 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Western Semi-Final on Sunday at BC Place.

With the offence in motion and the one-minute mark approaching, Jennings evaded defenders and scrambled to his right, racing past Taylor Loffler on the way to a nine-yard game-winning touchdown.

That, with 1:06 left in the game, was the first lead the Lions would take and the only one they’d need.

The Bombers got one more crack after that but after Head Coach Mike O’Shea opted to try a 61-yard field goal instead of trying to convert third and four, Justin Medlock’s try came up short, clinching BC’s first win over Winnipeg this year.

The Lions will take on the Stampeders on Sunday, Nov. 20 in the Western Final in Calgary.

While the Bombers managed only six second-half points, Matt Nichols put forth a strong outing for Winnipeg with 390 passing yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers on 26-of-40 throwing.

Jennings bounced back with 329 yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown on top of 43 rushing yards on nine attempts.

Emmanuel Arceneaux left the game after absorbing a hit in the end zone in the third quarter and did not return.

The narrative surrounding Sunday’s playoff meeting screamed ‘turnovers’, which was enforced almost immediately when Jennings was picked off by Chris Randle on just the second play of the game.

Arceneaux was running a comeback route and Randle beat him to the football, intercepted the pass and returned it 10 yards into BC territory.

The Bombers took the role of bully early on, riding the coattails of Andrew Harris on the way to an eventual four-yard rushing touchdown, the former Lion hushing the BC Place gathering and giving Winnipeg a 7-0 lead out of the chute.

After Medlock’s kick rolled into the end zone for a single to make it 8-0, the Bombers forced another quick two-and-out. Not long later, just as BC’s offence began to pick up some steam, the Winnipeg turnover machine struck again.

A couple of plays after Jennings threaded the needle in double coverage to Arceneaux, the 24-year-old quarterback coughed up the football when he was met by Maurice Leggett in the BC backfield.

Barely any sooner than Khalil Bass could scoop up the fumble, the Bomber offence took the field and set up an 18-yard chip shot by Medlock to make it an 11-0 game.

At the risk of their home crowd fading, the Lions needed to mount a response and quickly. Jennings stepped into the pocket and fired to a wide open Bryan Burnham for 22 yards and then, after an incompletion on first down, it was Jeremiah Johnson dashing for 17 on a second-down grab.

Rainey and Johnson teamed up to deliver two more first downs for the Lions’ offence and before Burnham was able to find space outside after the catch and extend for the goal line, striking the Lions’ first points of the game on a 13-yard score.

The two-point conversion failed, but the Lions were within five nonetheless following a 75-yard drive to make it 11-6 Winnipeg.

Just when it seemed like the Lions were right in it, the Bombers responded almost like they had found a glitch in the system.

There was no one within 10 yards of Weston Dressler when he snuck behind the Winnipeg defence for a 60-yard pickup, while on the very next play, Smith got behind Ryan Phillips for a 27-yard touchdown.

A lightning-fast two-play, 87-yard drive put Winnipeg back in front 18-6 and the Bombers weren’t done there.

With the ball back in their hands and a second down in progress, Harris was able to slip the tackle of Adam Bighill, a key play on a drive that would end up going so much further.

Nichols made the Lions’ secondary pay, calmly connecting with Smith who was able to reach out and touch the pylon to give Winnipeg another six points – the extra point extending Winnipeg’s lead to 25-6 with just 2:18 to go in the second quarter.

Just when it seemed like the Lions were destined to punt once again, Chris Rainey made magic. The former Florida Gator appeared to meet a dead end before making the first man miss and sprinting 37 yards into Winnipeg territory.

On the very next play it was more of the same, but this time from Johnson, the first-year Lion escaping defenders, finding a crease and running for a 40-yard touchdown to the roar of the hometown crowd.

Another failed two-point conversion capped off the 88-yard scoring drive and kept the Lions hanging on heading into the half trailing 25-12.

After the teams swapped punts to start the second half, the Bombers had the first strike of the third quarter with a Medlock field goal.

But after avoiding penalties throughout the first half, a couple of orange flags hurt the Bombers’ defence. A 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness after an Arceneaux first down put BC in a favourable position, then an illegal contact penalty kept the drive alive after a second-down stop.

From the 15-yard-line, the pass intended to Arceneaux was incomplete but the ensuing hit drew a flag for unnecessary roughness. Arceneaux had to leave the game, but two plays later, Jennings was on his way into the end zone, cutting the Lions’ deficit to nine points, 28-19.

A big defensive stop deep in Winnipeg territory appeared to put the wind in the Lions’ sails heading into the fourth quarter, but a roughing the kicker penalty hit the Lions hard and extended the drive.

The Bombers added a field goal but even all that wasn’t enough to kill BC’s upward momentum.

Johnson converted a pair of second-down tries, then Jennings kept the drive moving with consecutive first-down completions to Marco Iannuzzi and Terrell Sinkfield.

The drive finished with a wide open touchdown to Sinkfield for six yards in front of coverage, pulling the Lions to within five points with fewer than seven minutes remaining.

With not much time left, BC got the ball back and went to work.

Jennings completed seven straight passes, setting up his eventual game-winning touchdown run.

The Bombers were left with a minute to try and set up Medlock, one of the strongest-legged kickers in the game, with a potential game-winning field goal try. But in the end, Medlock’s 62-yard field goal try fell well short of the upright.

Johnson finished with a game-high 110 rushing yards on 11 carries for the Lions, who ran for 193 yards in total on the night. Rainey chipped in with 97 yards from scrimmage on seven carries and four receptions.

While five BC Lions receivers had at least 40 yards, none had more than Burnham’s 63 on an offence that distributed the ball equally among playmakers.

2016 Playoff Results

The final four teams in this year’s quest for a CFL Grey Cup title are set after Edmonton got past Hamilton 24-21 as a three-point road favorite in the East Division Semifinal Round and British Columbia snuck past Winnipeg 32-31 in the West Semifinals as a five-point favorite at home.

Here is the betting breakdown for this Sunday’s Division Finals.

East Division Final (ESPNNews, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Game Overview

Edmonton’s PUSH against Hamilton raised its record to 6-1 straight-up over its last seven games. The Eskimos have gone a profitable 5-1-1 against the spread during this run and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. Edmonton has been a tough out on the road lately with a SU 4-1 SU (3-1-1 ATS) record in its last five road games.

Mike Reilly led the CFL in total passing yards this season with 5,554, but he went just 10-of-19 for 133 yards in this past Sunday before leaving the game with an injury. His playing status for this game has been upgraded to probable. The difference maker was running back John White with 160 rushing yards and two scores on 20 carries. This is the time of the year in Canada when effectively running the ball can make all the difference in the world.

Ottawa stumbled its way to a second-straight East Division title with just two victories in its last six games both SU and ATS. The RedBlacks closed out the regular season with a 33-20 loss to Winnipeg as four-point home underdogs in a game that went OVER the 49 ½-point closing line. It has now gone OVER in five of their last six games.

To earn a return trip to this year’s Grey Cup, Ottawa is going to need a big effort from quarterback Trevor Harris, who was sixth in the league in passing with 3,666 yards. The RedBlacks also got a strong contribution from veteran quarterback Henry Burris with 2,419 passing yards. The trio of Greg Ellingson, Chris Williams and Ernest Jackson each posted more than 1,200 yards in receptions; however Williams was lost for the season with a knee injury in late October.

Betting Trends

Ottawa won both meetings this season SU with a 1-1 split ATS. The total stayed UNDER 58 in a tight 23-20 victory at home on Aug. 6 in a game where Edmonton covered as a 3 ½-point road underdog. Before this season’s series, the Eskimos had won five previous meetings SU while going 3-2 ATS.


West Division Final (ESPN3, 4:30 p.m. ET)

British Columbia Lions (12-6 SU, 13-5 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (15-2-1 SU, 13-5 ATS)

Game Overview

The Lions started this season with a stunning 20-18 victory against Calgary as 2 ½-point underdogs at home and they are just one of two teams to actually beat the Stampeders SU this season. They failed to cover in Sunday’s win against Winnipeg; however they are 3-1 ATS in their last four games while going a perfect 4-0 SU. The total went OVER 55 ½-points against the Blue Bombers and it has gone OVER in five of BC’s last seven games.

BC needed a 13-point fourth quarter effort to earn a trip to this division final. Jonathon Jennings overcame two first-quarter turnovers by saving his best for last with a nine yard game-winning touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He ended the day with 329 passing yards and two scores while completing 26-of-35 attempts. Jeremiah Johnson anchored the running game with 110 yards and a score on 11 carries.

Calgary has been patiently waiting for the chance to complete its run to a title after cruising its way through the regular season. You can basically throw-out a meaningless loss to Montreal in Week 19 in what was one of the most dominating runs in recent CFL memory. The Stampeders’ SU winning streak this season extended to 14 games and going back to early August they went 10-2 ATS before that loss to the Alouettes.

This is going to be a very tough team to take down behind an offense that led the league in scoring with an average of 32.6 points a game. This effort complemented the stingiest defense in the CFL that allowed just 20.5 points a game over the course of its 18-game regular season schedule. Bo Levi Mitchell was second in the league in passing yards (5,385) and he led the way in passing touchdowns (32). Jerome Messam rushed for 1,198 yards while finding the end zone 11 times. Both stats were both at the top of the list in the CFL.

Betting Trends

Calgary got the best of things in the final two meetings this season SU, but BC was able to cover in a wild 44-41 overtime loss on July 29 as a 4 ½-point road underdog. The total in this West Division rivalry has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

Grey Cup Final

Following a long and grueling 18-game regular season schedule plus two rounds of playoffs, the stage has been set for this Sunday’s CFL Grey Cup title showdown between the East’s Ottawa RedBlacks and the West’s Calgary Stampeders in a 6 p.m. (ET) kickoff at BMO Field in Toronto.

This past Sunday, Ottawa outlasted Edmonton in the snow with a 35-23 victory as a 2 ½-point home underdog, while Calgary stayed on track to win this season’s Grey Cup with a crushing 42-15 win at home against British Columbia as a 7 ½-point favorite.

Game Overview

Ottawa may have backed into its second-straight East Division title with just two straight-up wins in its last six regular season contests, but it came up with a victory when it needed to the most to make its second-straight trip the Grey Cup Championship. The RedBlacks went 4-3 against the spread this season when closing as underdogs and the total has now gone OVER in six of their last seven games after going OVER the closing 53-point line in last week’s win against Edmonton.

If Ottawa is going to have any chance to win the CFL title this time around following a tough six-point loss to Edmonton last season as a seven-point underdog, it is going to need another strong effort from an offense that rolled up 425 yards of total offense in last week’s win. Henry Burris got the start at quarterback and while he ended the day with 246 yards passing, he only managed to complete 57.7 percent of his 26 attempts. The big story was Kienan LaFrance’s 157 yards rushing on 25 carries.

Going all the way back to a rare 26-26 tie against Ottawa in Week 3 of the regular season, the Stampeders’ only loss since then was in a meaningless game against Montreal in Week 19. At one point their SU winning streak reached 14 games and over the final 12 games of that impressive run they went a highly profitable 10-2 ATS. Calgary left little doubt as to just how good this team really is by completely dismantling BC in the West Division Finals.

In that lopsided victory against the Lions, Calgary was able to put things away early with a 32-0 lead at the half. Bo Levi Mitchell ended the day with 365 yards passing and three touchdown strikes while completing 75 percent of his 28 attempts. Jerome Messam added 84 yards rushing on 14 carries as part of a ground game that gained 166 total yards. These two players have been getting it done all season long on an offense that averaged a CFL-high 32.6 points a game. Defensively, the Stampeders also led the league in average points allowed (20.5).

Betting Trends

The RedBlacks are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a SU winning record and they have failed to cover in their last seven games following a SU win. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games against a team with a SU winning record.

The Stampeders are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games following a SU win and they have covered in 19 of their last 26 games overall. The total has gone OVER in seven of their last 10 postseason games.

Head-to-head in this matchup, Calgary has a 4-1-1 edge SU while going 5-1 ATS. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in the last four meetings. Following that Week 3 tie, the Stampeders went on to beat Ottawa 48-23 on Sept. 17 as eight-point favorites at home. The total easily went OVER the closing 54-point line in that game.

Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks (+9.5, 54.5)

The Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks meet in the 104th Grey Cup in Toronto on Sunday. The Stampeders followed up on one of the greatest regular seasons in CFL history with a 42-15 victory against the BC Lions in the West Division final to advance to the Grey Cup for the third time in five years, while the Redblacks beat the Edmonton Eskimos 35-23 to punch their ticket to the championship game for the second time in as many seasons.

Ottawa was one of the few teams able to slow down Calgary as they played out a memorable 26-26 tie in Week 3 before the Stampeders won the second meeting 48-23 on Sept. 17, and are 9.5-point favourites to win their eighth Grey Cup in franchise history.

"Favourites are something y'all can deal with," Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell told reporters. "It's so damn hard to win in the CFL that you have to understand if a team is in the Grey Cup they're there for a reason."

The Redblacks struggled against the Stampeders in recent years, managing one victory in the last six meetings, but Henry Burris turned back the clock since reclaiming the starting job from Trevor Harris by averaging 349 passing yards in his last four starts to put Ottawa on the cusp of lifting its first Grey Cup since 1976.

"We have always been looked at as the underdog on this team," Burris told reporters. "No matter what we have done it seems nobody want to give us respect."

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (16-2-1 SU, 14-5 ATS, 8-9-2 (O/U): Mitchell continues to pick apart opposing defences as he threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns against BC. There is plenty of uncertainty on the offensive line as guard Brad Erdos suffered a lower-body injury in the fourth quarter against the Lions and was replaced by Cam Thorn, who was promptly knocked out of the game a few minutes later, while Pierre Lavertu is battling a neck issue. Jerome Messam, who led the league in rushing (1,198) during the regular season, churned out 84 yards on 14 carries in the Western Final and hopes for another strong performance as the eight-year veteran strives to win his first Grey Cup in his hometown.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (9-9-1 SU, 8-11 ATS, 10-8-1 O/U): Backup running back Kienan Lafrance racked up a career-high 157 rushing yards and a touchdown after replacing Mossis Madu Jr., who suffered a shoulder injury on the opening possession against Edmonton. Lafrance will likely get the starting nod Sunday but will share snaps with Travon Van, who is set to be activated after sitting out the Eastern Final while linebacker Taylor Reed is expected to play after missing a majority of the second half with a head injury. Ray Early made 2-of-2 field goals against the Eskimos with Chris Milo nursing a lower-body injury but Milo practiced during the week and should be ready to assume the kicking duties Sunday.
