Harbaugh's fast start has Wolverines favored over Sparty

Books have tabbed the Wolverines as 6-point home favorites over their in-state rivals.

There were certainly people who thought that, in due time, Jim Harbaugh could turn around a lagging Michigan program. Outside of Ann Arbor, however, it’s likely nobody would have predicted that the former Wolverines QB would have such a speedy impact when he took the reins.

But by the time Michigan plays host to instate Big Ten rival Michigan State on Saturday, it will have been a month since the Wolverines gave up any points. Michigan (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) blanked No. 13 Northwestern 38-0 Saturday as a 10.5-point home favorite and has now outscored its last three foes by a total of 97-0. And that came after back-to-back wins in which the Wolverines allowed just seven points apiece.

Michigan State, meanwhile, is perfect on the field, and perfectly awful at the betting counter, at 6-0 SU and 0-6 ATS. The Spartans held off Rutgers 31-24 as a 12-point chalk on Saturday.

Although fourth-ranked Michigan State is 6-1 SU and a spotless 7-0 ATS in its last seven meetings with Michigan, the 14th-ranked Wolverines will be 6-point favorites here, according to Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports at Wynn Las Vegas.

“These two have met 107 times, with Michigan winning 68 of those, and five ties,” Avello said. “At the start of the year, I had no intentions of making Michigan the favorite in this one, but after having as many shutouts as Jake Arrieta of the Cubs, and the Spartans just squeaking by in their last two against average competition, the team from Ann Arbor will be the chalk.”

Southern California at Notre Dame (-3)

The Trojans, a preseason top-10 team, are stunningly on the brink of having their season fly out the window. USC (3-2 SU and ATS) went off as a 17-point home fave Saturday against Washington, yet inexplicably mustered just one touchdown and two field goals in a 17-12 loss.

Notre Dame, on the flipside, is looking stout at 5-1 SU and ATS, despite losing its starting quarterback and starting running back early in the season. The Fighting Irish bounced back from a tough loss at Clemson to fend off Navy 41-24 Saturday laying 13.5 points at home.

“It must be the third Saturday of October, because that's when this traditional rivalry will continue at South Bend,” Avello said. “USC will try to recover after a stunning loss that most likely took them out of the hunt for a national championship. Notre Dame played a solid second half to take care of a stubborn Navy team, and if the Irish can get by this one, the schedule-maker has made the next four quite soft to keep their championship hopes alive.”

Florida at Louisiana State (-5)

Much like Michigan, Florida has a new coach who has engineered a big turnaround. The Gators (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) rolled past Missouri 21-3 Saturday giving 6.5 points on the road. Coach Jim McElwain has Florida at No. 11 in the nation.

But No. 5 LSU (5-0 SU, 2-3 ATS) and its rampaging running back, Leonard Fournette, will present the sternest test by far for the Gators. On Saturday, the Tigers – getting a bonus home game due to massive flooding in South Carolina – dumped the Gamecocks 45-24 to narrowly cash as a 20.5-point favorite.

“Florida and Michigan have to be the two biggest surprises of the season, and in both cases, their defenses have been the catalysts,” Avello said. “Florida is allowing opponents an average of less than 100 yards per game, and continuing that trend will be its biggest obstacle against the Tigers. To keep a perfect record, the Gators must figure out how to stop Fournette, who is averaging 10 yards a carry and 200 yards per game.”

Alabama (-4) at Texas A&M

The Crimson Tide (5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) have bounced back from their upset home loss to Mississippi with three consecutive wins. That includes an impressive 38-10 rout of Georgia as a 1.5-point road pup, followed by Saturday’s 27-14 victory over Arkansas as a 15-point home chalk.

The Aggies (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) will come in well-rested off a bye week, after topping Mississippi State 30-17 laying 4 points at home on Oct. 3. And Avello figures the Aggies haven’t forgotten their last meeting against the Tide.

“I have to think that the Aggies are still a little bitter over the 59-0 drubbing at Alabama last year,” he said. “This game sets up nicely for them, as they had the week off and a 5-0 start to the season as a confidence builder. But they'll still be a small ‘dog against a team I'll be very careful about putting in the underdog role again.”

Don't dare let these three spot bet opportunities pass you by

Washington State is coming off a massive upset over Oregon and giving eight points to visiting Oregon State Saturday.

Letdown spot

The Mike Leach experiment at Washington State produced its finest results last weekend when the Cougars upset Oregon 45-38 in double overtime as 15.5-point road underdogs in Eugene. Washington State has long been the Pac-12’s favorite punching bag, but struck back with a monster win over the Ducks, using two crazy touchdowns including a bizarre fumble recovery on the goal line to get the 'W'. The Cougars' social media jockeys trolled the Ducks following the win with a clever "Oregon Trail" meme.

That sets Wazzu up for perhaps the biggest letdown spot of the college football season. Washington State is an 8-point home favorite against Oregon State Saturday afternoon. The Beavers are just 2-3 on the year but have covered in seven straight trips to Pullman and are 11-4 ATS in their previous 15 meetings overall.

Lookahead spot

The New York Jets are coming off a bye week following their victory against Miami in the NFL’s UK game in London. It’s very likely the Jets spent as much time preparing for next week’s opponent – the New England Patriots – as they did for this week’s foe, the Washington Redskins.

New York, at 3-1 SU and ATS, has exceed expectations through four games and has a chance to upend the Pats, who are coming off a tough Sunday night matchup with Indianapolis. That will be the Jets’ first game against Bill Belichick and Tom Brady without Rex Ryan on the sideline in some time. New York, however, is giving six points in Week 6 to a rising Washington squad that has covered in three of its last four outings.

Schedule spot

The San Jose Sharks have a busy travel schedule this week, kicking off Tuesday in the nation’s capitals. San Jose, which opened the season 2-0, takes on Washington then plays a challenging three games in four nights away from home to wrap the week.

Following a showdown with the Capitals, the Sharks hit the ice in New Jersey Friday, travel to Brooklyn to play the Islanders Saturday, rest Sunday, and finish this frantic East Coast trip against the Rangers on Monday. Heading into Tuesday’s game, San Jose was just 2-5 in its last seven versus Metropolitan foes.

Southern Cal opened as a 4-point underdog at Notre Dame but has shot up to +6.5 following the firing of head coach Steve Sarkisian.

USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-6.5)

Southern Cal may be a dumpster fire right now after the firing of head coach Steve Sarkisian. While Sarkisian was not on my list of good coaches and this move may be a blessing in disguise for the future of the USC program, the team is really up against it in this game against Notre Dame.

The oddsmakers opened Notre Dame as a 4-point favorite in this game, but after news of Sarkisian’s firing broke, money pushed the line up to -6.5. That’s not an overreaction at all as my power ratings made the Irish -6.5 without an adjustment considering the circumstances surrounding USC. Lay the 6.5 now before the line hits the key number of -7.

Boston College Eagles (+15.5) at Clemson Tigers

Clemson is off back-to-back big wins, and this game against Boston College is a flat spot on their schedule. The Tigers beat Notre Dame in a thrilling finish and they played a perfect game, beating Georgia Tech by 19 points in a game that wasn’t even that close last week. After this game, Clemson will play three of its next four games on the road, including next week at Miami.

Boston College comes into this game off an ugly 3-0 home loss to Wake Forest last week. The Eagles actually dominated that game on the field, and it was surprising that they actually lost. Boston College has an excellent defense and the 36.5-point total on this game is a clear indication of that. There’s no rush to take Boston College now, so wait this game out, and grab as many points as you can with the Eagles.

Total to watch

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers (47.5)

Florida has been all defense and little offense this season and with the news of quarterback Will Grier being suspending for a positive PED test, the Gators will certainly rely on their defense even more. Grier was basically managing the offense, so it’s easy to assume his backup isn’t any better and he’ll do the same for Florida.

Louisiana State also has a fantastic defense, so the Tigers should have no trouble in shutting down the Florida offense. The total on this game opened briefly at 47.5, but after the Grier news broke, the majority of sportsbooks took it off the board. Keep an eye on this total when shops reopen it, and take a look at the Under.

Team to Watch: Bowling Green Falcons

This week: -11 vs. Akron Zips

The Bowling Green Falcons are one of the most explosive offenses, not only in the MAC but in the entire country. Their consistent ability to play for four quarters, always looking for the open man downfield, has made them one of the most exciting teams to watch in the country. Matt Johnson is proving to be a quarterback to watch and even though he is not receiving much media attention, he has been putting up Heisman-type numbers this season.

There are few teams in the country that can go score-for-score with the Falcons. Even though they do have some issues on the defensive side of the ball, their offense has been more than enough not only to keep them in games but have allowed them to cover hefty spreads as well. That should be the case again in this contest as the Zips simply don't have enough rounds in the chamber to keep up.

Team to beware of: Toledo Rockets

This week: -30 vs. Eastern Michigan

The Toledo Rockets are off to a 5-0 start to the season and have built up quite an impressive resume. Many considered their win over the Arkansas Razorbacks to be somewhat of a fluke, but since then they have continued to pile up the victories and appear to be the frontrunner for a date in the MAC championship game and are even eyeing a potential at-large bid to a big-name Bowl Game.

All things considered, Toledo is a good team. However, now that the Rockets are in the national spotlight and have caught the eye of the casual sports bettor, any value that this team once had has now dried up. At this point in the season, because of their resume and high ranking, the oddsmakers have likely inflated the number on their games. Such is the case this week when they take on Eastern Michigan. This game does have blowout written all over as both teams are currently at different ends of the spectrum, but we wouldn't be surprised in Eastern Michigan finds a way to backdoor this extremely generous number.

Total team: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

This week: 69 at North Texas Mean Green

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers have finally settled into their groove offensive and Brandon Doughty continually manages to put up video game numbers the past couple of weeks and there is little that any team has been able to do to stop them. Defense was a major hole in the Hilltoppers game last season and even though they aren’t especially stout on the defensive end of the ball, they have made great strides in the offseason.

The North Texas Mean Green are far from the team that they have been in seasons past. Their offense simply has not found any rhythm and their once vaunted defense has clearly taken a step back. They were recently trounced 66-7 at home by FCS Portland State and that performance has likely left a bad taste in their mouths. While they don’t stand much of a chance in this contest, we do expect them to have a bit more of a showing than their performance last week, especially on defense.

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal (-6.5, 54)

No. 18 UCLA used its bye week to prepare for Thursday’s road game against 16th-ranked Stanford, but the extra time couldn’t help the Bruins’ injury situation. UCLA will again be without three defensive starters when they face Stanford, which has won four in a row since its opening loss at Northwestern and boasts a dominant running attack that could wreak havoc against the Bruins.

Stanford, which is also coming off a bye, has won seven straight against UCLA and leads the Pac-12 North with a 3-0 mark. UCLA has lost defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes, cornerback Fabian Moreau and linebacker Myles Jack to season-ending injuries and will be hard-pressed to slow down Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, who ranks second in the nation in all-purpose yards with 229.8 per game. Remound Wright has added seven rushing touchdowns for Stanford, which has scored 40 or more points in each of the last three games while rushing for 834 yards over that stretch. The Cardinal will look to carry that momentum into Thursday’s contest against UCLA, which had its offense slowed down for the first three quarters of a 38-23 loss to Arizona State on Oct. 3.

Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen has thrown nine touchdowns against five interceptions while showing a clear preference for receivers Jordan Payton and Thomas Duarte, who have combined to catch 23 passes for 375 yards and four scores over the last two games against the Arizona schools. The injury-depleted defense has allowed 545 rushing yards in the last two contests and needs a strong showing from linebackers Kenny Young and Deon Hollins to help contain McCaffrey.

ABOUT STANFORD (4-1, 4-1 ATS, 3-2 O/U): After a rough outing against Northwestern, quarterback Kevin Hogan has bounced back to rank seventh in the NCAA in passing efficiency at 169.8 while completing 79 percent of his passes in the last three games. Stanford has scored at least 24 points in each of the past seven wins against the Bruins, and Hogan threw for 234 yards and two scores in last season’s 31-10 victory. Linebacker Blake Martinez had 13 tackles in Stanford’s 55-17 win over Arizona on Oct. 3 and leads the FBS with 12.6 tackles per game, but the defense is tied for 125th in the country in turnovers gained with three in five games.

Auburn is having QB trouble; they're 0-2 in SEC, needed OT to beat a I-AA team, and passed for only 108 yards in 35-21 win over San Jose St. LW- they lost 45-21 at LSU in only true road game this year. Tigers are 4-6 s road favorites since 2007 (2-2 under Malzahn). Kentucky is 4-1 with only loss 14-9 at home to Florida; Wildcats are 1-6-2 as home dog under Stoops. Teams are meeting for first time since 2010; Auburn won three of last four meetings, winning 37-34 (-6) in last visit here.

North Texas is 0-5; they lost 66-7 at home to a I-AA team LW, then got rid of its coach before the day was over. Mean Green is giving up 49.2 ppg; their closest loss was 38-24 at home to Rice. Western Kentucky is playing UNT for first time since '12, winning last two meetings by 1-10 points; Hilltoppers are 7-5 as road favorites (1-1 under Brohm); they've scored 54.3 ppg in winning last three games, winning 49-10 at Rice. Stanford lost its opener at Northwesterm but won four in row since, by average score of 42-20; Cardinal has 639 rushing yards last two games- they're 8-3 in last 11 games as home favorite. Bruins' defense has been hurt by injury; they allowed 933 yards, 68 points last two games. UCLA is 5-2 as road dog under Mora.

Friday's games
Cincinnati split pair of wild road games, winning 37-33 at Miami, O, but losing 53-46 at unbeaten Memphis; Bearcats upset Miami, FL at home last week- they're 3-2 as road underdogs under Tuberville. BYU is 4-2, despite losing starting QB in opener; three of their last four games stayed under total, three of four Bearcat games went over total. Cougars are 2-6 in last eight games as home fave; they're 3-0 at home, scoring 36.7 ppg with a win over Boise State.

Houston is 5-0, scoring 45 ppg vs I-A teams under new coach Herman; Cougars (-17) got upset 31-24 by Tulane LY, first loss in last 11 games vs Green Wave. Underdogs covered three of last four in series. Tulane is 1-3 vs I-A teams, with only win vs winless UCF; Green Wave already has three losses by 30+ points; they were outgained 345-110 in 49-10 loss at Temple LW. Three of last four Houston games went over total.

Boise State won last three games by total of 152-24; two of those were on road; Broncos won last 12 games with Utah State (10-2 vs spread), winning last five visits here, with last visit here 34-23 (-6) in '13. Auburn Tigers have been an abysmal wager

Five college football teams have yet to record a victory against the spread and the Auburn Tigers (0-5 ATS) are one of them. For Auburn backers, however, this is a trend that is all too familiar over the past two seasons.

The Tigers have gone just 2-14 ATS over the course of their last 16 games overall. Auburn covered in its first two games last season, but slumped to a 2-9 ATS mark (including their bowl game) to finish the campaign.

The Kentucky Wildcats host the Tigers Thursday evening and are currently tabbed as 1-point home underdogs.

UCLA out to snap Stanford losing streak

LOS ANGELES -- UCLA has a Stanford problem.

The Cardinal has won seven consecutive games against the Bruins, including a regular-season-ending 31-10 victory in Pasadena last year that prevented UCLA from winning the Pac-12 South. At that point, the Bruins even had hope of sneaking into the College Football Playoff.

But with so much on the line, Stanford exerted its will over the Bruins once again, holding UCLA to a scant 262 yards.

The teams meet again Thursday night in Palo Alto, Calif. No. 15 Stanford is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12. UCLA is 4-1 and 1-1.

UCLA coach Jim Mora is 0-4 in three seasons against Stanford, a record that includes a loss in the 2012 league championship game.

The UCLA Bruins are 5-0 straight up and against the spread in their five games coming off a bye week under head coach Jim Mora. The Bruins are in that spot at the Stanford Cardinal Thursday evening.

Boise State doesn't have too many roadblocks to work around in the Mountain West but Friday's visit to Utah State certainly qualifies as one for the No. 20 Broncos. Boise State is tied with Utah State and Air Force for the Mountain Division lead and the winner of this contest takes a large step toward landing a spot in the conference title game.

The Broncos may be without sophomore running back Jeremy McNichols, who suffered a head injury in last Saturday's victory over Colorado State. McNichols has scored a nation-best 14 touchdowns through six games while rushing for a team-high 485 yards. Utah State sophomore quarterback Kent Myers starts for the third straight game in place of injured senior Chuckie Keeton (knee) as the Aggies attempt to win their 12th consecutive home game. "It's going to be a major challenge for us, but one that I know we're up for and one we're excited about," Utah State coach Matt Wells said in a press conference. "We haven't beaten them yet since we have been in this league, but the fact that the winner is in the driver's seat for the Mountain Division makes it a big game."

The two Mountain West programs will square off at Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium Friday evening. Boise State has won the past 12 meetings and owns a 15-4 edge in the series but the Aggies have won 20 of their last 22 home games.
