Nebraska, Minnesota trying to recover from rough starts
    October 16, 2015

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Big Ten's West Division is the most winnable of the two these days. The current class of the conference, Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan, is in the other group.

Nebraska and Minnesota were two of the early favorites, but they've already fallen behind. Their matchup on Saturday will be critical for remaining in the race, with undefeated Iowa off to the strongest start.

''You try not to focus on that stuff too much, but yeah, you do want to know. Is there still a way? Is it still possible to make it to the conference championship?'' Nebraska defensive end Jack Gangwish said. ''Yeah, there is some of that stuff. You look and you wonder, but at the end of the day you have to take comfort in the fact that all you can do is win the next one.''

Minnesota (4-2, 1-1) did just that last week, rebounding from a humbling shutout loss at Northwestern by blowing out Purdue. Nebraska (2-4, 0-2) had the chance at home against Wisconsin but was beaten for a fourth time this season on the other team's final offensive play.

Another loss, and the Huskers will be off to the program's worst start in 57 years.

Here are some key angles to know about the game on Saturday:

    PASSING LANE

The Gophers have three nonconference victories, by three points apiece against non-power conference opponents. The offense has been largely stagnant, ranked last in the league with an average of 19.7 points per game. They're 12th of 14 with an average of 348.5 yards per game.

They returned to their roots against Purdue, with a dominant performance by freshman running back Shannon Brooks and the linemen and receivers blocking for him. But quarterback Mitch Leidner will be counted on for more production against a Huskers team that's worst among all 127 FBS teams against the pass.

That's right: The Huskers have given up an average of 348.5 yards per game through the air.

''If we need to throw it, we'll throw it. I ain't real fired up. We throw it 50 times, then I might have a heart attack,'' coach Jerry Kill said. ''So I'm not going to throw it 50 times. Maybe 49, but not 50.''

Added offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover: ''If you want to run the football, you have to keep them off-balance a little bit. You can't just dive it between the tackles and hope for the best.''

    UNUSUAL START

Nebraska has not opened 0-3 in conference play since the 1945 team coached by George ''Potsy'' Clark lost consecutive Big Six games against Oklahoma, Iowa State and Missouri. The Huskers, who haven't started 2-5 overall since 1958 under coach Bill Jennings, have lost seven of their last 10 games to match the program's worst 10-game stretch since the 1959-60 seasons.

    BANGED UP ON BOTH SIDES

The Huskers have been hampered by injuries throughout their front seven on defense, but they're expected to have linebacker Josh Banderas (groin) back in action after missing four of the last five games.

The Gophers have been hit hardest on the offensive line and in the secondary. They'll be without three key defensive backs, including starting safety Damarius Travis (hamstring) for a sixth straight game. Cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun (knee) was listed as questionable. He has been out for the last two games.

    CLOSE CALLS

Minnesota has a two-game winning streak against Nebraska for the first time since taking three in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1954.

''Personally, I feel like Nebraska's a pretty big rivalry here,'' Minnesota defensive end Andrew Stelter said. ''We beat 'em the last two years so they're going to come out hungry.''

    DRILLING DOWN

Nebraska coach Mike Riley pointed to a number of tipped balls down the field by the defensive backs against Wisconsin as signs of improvement. In practice, the Huskers have been doing ''tons of ball drills'' to keep that up.

''I always tell defensive backs and even coach them to that point where you're not going to intercept this ball, but sometimes one finger on a ball saves a game,'' Riley said.

      A&M looking to remain undefeated
      October 16, 2015

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen remembers exactly how he felt after year's 59-0 drubbing by Alabama.

''It was a feeling of embarrassment to be on a national TV stage and be beaten like that,'' he said. ''It felt like we were a high school team playing a college team, honestly, and it's not a feeling we ever want to feel again.''

No. 9 Texas A&M gets a chance to avenge that blowout Saturday when it hosts No. 10 Alabama. The Aggies will be trying to open a season 6-0 for the first time since 1994 and keep pace with LSU in the SEC West. A loss by Alabama would badly damage its Southeastern Conference title and playoff hopes since they lost to Mississippi on Sept. 19.

While the Aggies (5-0, 2-0 SEC) are thinking about last year's game to help insure that something like that doesn't happen again, the Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1) is trying to ignore all the talk about it as the team gets ready for another meeting with Texas A&M.

''It's just like last week's game against Georgia, we have to block that out to focus for Arkansas,'' running back Kenyan Drake said. ''Every game is a season within itself. Obviously we're not going to focus on last year. That was a whole different year, a whole different team for both sides, so we're just going to focus on this year.''

A 19-year-old sophomore, Allen already has a lot of experience and is 8-2 in 10 career starts. He's been extremely accurate this season and has thrown 79 straight passes without an interception.

''They've really worked hard to try to create balance on their offense this year, in terms of being able to run the ball a little bit better,'' Alabama coach Nick Saban said. ''But they're still one of the most prolific passing teams in the country. Kyle Allen has done a really good job at quarterback for them. His passing efficiency rating is one of the tops in the country.''

Some things to know about the top-10 matchup between Alabama and Texas A&M:

      TWO-PRONGED RUSHING ATTACK:

Alabama's offense features two solid running backs in Derrick Henry and Drake. Henry leads the team with 665 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns and Drake has 244 yards rushing with a score. Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and his staff are focused on trying to slow the pair down on Saturday.

''One is a bigger bruiser, the other is more a shake-and-bake guy. Certainly complement each other well,'' Sumlin said. ''Bring different styles. See times where they're putting both on the field and able to utilize them ... we have to play good, sound, fundamental football. Gap responsibility. Got to gang tackle. Got to get a lot of people to the ball.''

      PILING UP SACKS:

Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett is tied for third in the country with 7 1/2 sacks. He has piled up 19 sacks in his career after breaking Jadeveon Clowney's SEC freshman record by taking down the quarterback 11 1/2 times last season. But he's not the only Aggie getting to the quarterback often as teammate Daeshon Hall has five sacks this year.

''I think their defense is playing a lot better,'' Saban said. ''They've got a really good scheme. They've got two really tough pass rushers to single block on the edges, which always can cause issues in the passing game.''

      RIDLEY'S RECEIVING:

Though Alabama relies more on its running game, Calvin Ridley has proven to be a threat in the passing game. He had nine catches for 140 yards - both career-highs - against Arkansas and leads the team with 385 yards receiving and three scores.

      RACING TO 1,000:

Texas A&M freshman WR/KR/PR Christian Kirk needs 42 yards to reach 1,000 all-purpose yards. Kirk leads the team with 519 yards receiving with four touchdowns and he's returned a punt for another score.

Essential Week 7 betting tips for college football's top games

Two of the top five offenses in the nation will square off Saturday when No. 12 Ole Miss visits No. 22 Memphis.

Searching for some quick-hitting betting notes to help you cap Saturday's top college football games? Look no further. We break down all the need-to-know facts and figures for Saturday's Top 25 NCAAF contests.

Eastern Michigan Eagles at (25) Toledo Rockets (-28, 60)

          * The Eagles come in off a 47-21 home loss to Akron, the third straight opponent to score at least 44 points.

          * The Rockets rank No. 2 in the nation in red zone defense, holding opponents to just a touchdown and three field goals on 13 trips inside the 20-yard line (30.8 percent).

West Virginia Mountaineers at (2) Baylor Bears (-21, 75)

          * The Mountaineers are beginning a two-game stretch as tough as any team will see this season with a trip to No. 3 TCU coming up next week and need to be more careful with the football after committing a total of nine turnovers in losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

          * Baylor’s average margin of victory of 42 points leads FBS. The Bears head in 3-1 ATS (one game had no line) and have covered the spread in three consecutive games.

Louisville Cardinals at (8) Florida State Seminoles (-7.5, 46)

          * Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson is third in the nation among freshmen with a team-best 435 rushing yards, but has struggled passing with a 53.2 completion rate, three touchdowns and four interceptions.

          * Florida State quarterback Everett Golson has eight touchdowns with zero interceptions in 2015 and has thrown 151 passes without a pick dating to last season as Florida State remains the only team in the nation without an offensive turnover.

          (12) Ole Miss Rebels at (22) Memphis Tigers (+10.5, 70)

          * Ole Miss topped Memphis, 24-3, last season, holding the Tigers to 104 yards of offense. The closing line of Ole Miss -21 resulted in a push for Rebels backers.

          * Memphis is riding a 12-game winning streak - the third-longest active run in the country - and has had 15 days to prepare for this contest. Despite the hot SU streak, the Tigers are just 6-5-1 ATS over those last 12.

          (17) Iowa Hawkeyes at (21) Northwestern Wildcats (+1.5, 41)

          * Iowa is one of only three FBS schools that has allowed only one rushing touchdown this season.

          * Northwestern and Iowa are meeting as ranked teams for the first time since 1996, when the Wildcats pounded the Hawkeyes 40-13 en route to a share of the Big Ten title. Northwestern covered as 6-point pups in that matchup.

          (4) Michigan State Spartans at (14) Michigan Wolverines (-7.5, 41.5)

          * The Spartans have gone 6-1 straight up and 7-0 against the spread in the previous seven meetings with their in-state rival. The Spartans lost 12-10 in 2012, but covered as 8.5-point road underdogs.

          * The 14th-ranked Wolverines have allowed only 14 points total in five consecutive victories (including three-straight shutouts) since losing to Utah in first-year coach Jim Harbaugh’s debut on Sept. 3.

          (19) Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas State Wildcats (+3.5, 54.5)

          * Oklahoma has won all five trips to Kansas State by double digits under coach Bob Stoops. The Sooners are 4-1 ATS in those five games.

          * The Wildcats have squandered double-digit leads in back-to-back games, losing to undefeated Oklahoma State and TCU on late scores.

          (9) Alabama Crimson Tide at (10) Texas A&M Aggies (+4, 53)

          * Alabama failed to contain an up-tempo attack in a loss to Ole Miss earlier this season and struggled with Texas A&M when Johnny Maziel was running Kevin Sumlin’s offense to perfection in previous seasons. “It's going to be a real challenge for us to be able to cover them and keep them cut off and not give them plays down the field," Nick Saban told reporters.

          * Aggies quarterback Kyle Allen was at his best in the first two SEC games and totaled 680 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in wins over Arkansas and Mississippi State.

          (3) TCU Horned Frogs at Iowa State Cyclones (+20.5, 73.5)

          * Third-ranked TCU has scored 50 or more points in each of its past five games and while 5-0 SU in those games, it is just 2-3 ATS.

          * Iowa State redshirt freshman Mike Warren has been electric with 574 rushing yards and an 8.1 average and he had 245 yards against Texas Tech, eighth-most in school history.

Boston College Eagles at (6) Clemson Tigers (-15.5, 37.5)

          * The Boston College offensive attack bottomed out in a 3-0 loss - its second shutout defeat in four weeks - last Saturday at home against Wake Forest. The Eagles missed two field goals, committed four turnovers and had the ball on the Demon Deacons' 1-yard line as the game ended.

          * The Tigers look to improve to 6-0 and achieve the longest home winning streak in school history (14) when they welcome Boston College to Death Valley on Saturday night. Clemson is 9-4 ATS during its home winning streak.

          (11) Florida Gators at (5) LSU Tigers (-7, 46)

          * Not having quarterback Will Grier, who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, is a blow to the Florida offense, and the Gators’ defense will have its hands full trying to slow down sophomore Leonard Fournette -- the nation’s leading rusher.

          * LSU finished with 624 yards of total offense at South Carolina last week, its third-highest total against a SEC opponent since 1960.

USC Trojans at (13) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-6.5, 61)

          * The USC-Notre Dame game is annually a highlight for each of the two programs, though the battle on the field is being overshadowed a bit by some off-the-field turmoil. The Trojans will play their first game under interim coach Clay Helton after the firing of Steve Sarkisian. Sarkisian is reportedly battling an alcohol addiction, and several alcohol-related incidents led to his being dismissed early this week.

          * Notre Dame bounced back nicely from its first loss by cruising past Navy 41-24 last weekend and is trying to stay in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth.

Penn State Nittany Lions at (1) Ohio State Buckeyes (-19, 47)

          * Senior defensive end Carl Nassib leads the nation with 10 sacks - Penn State also is tops in the country with 25 as a team - and sophomore middle linebacker Jason Cabinda (team-best 46 tackles) and junior defensive tackle Austin Johnson (7.5 tackles for losses) also star on the defensive side.

          * The Buckeyes will attempt to extend their record of consecutive Big Ten wins to 27 Saturday. Ohio State is just 13-12-1 ATS in the previous 26.

Arizona State Sun Devils at (7) Utah Utes (-6.5, 56)

          * Arizona State is 20-6 against the Utes and won last season's matchup 19-16 in overtime. The Sun Devils have won 12-straight meetings and are 2-2 ATS in four meetings since the Utes joined the Pac-12.

          * The Utes rely on standout senior running back Devontae Booker, who racked up 222 yards against Cal and has 665 on the season. “I don’t really care if it was a breakout game for me," Booker told reporters. "I was just doing my job to help my team win.”
