Game of the Day: Boise State at Utah State

Boise State Broncos at Utah State Aggies (+9.5, 49.5)

Boise State doesn't have too many roadblocks to work around in the Mountain West but Friday's visit to Utah State certainly qualifies as one for the No. 20 Broncos. Boise State is tied with Utah State and Air Force for the Mountain Division lead and the winner of this contest takes a large step toward landing a spot in the conference title game.

The Broncos may be without sophomore running back Jeremy McNichols, who suffered a head injury in last Saturday's victory over Colorado State. McNichols has scored a nation-best 14 touchdowns through six games while rushing for a team-high 485 yards. Utah State sophomore quarterback Kent Myers starts for the third straight game in place of injured senior Chuckie Keeton (knee) as the Aggies attempt to win their 12th consecutive home game. "It's going to be a major challenge for us, but one that I know we're up for and one we're excited about," Utah State coach Matt Wells said in a press conference. "We haven't beaten them yet since we have been in this league, but the fact that the winner is in the driver's seat for the Mountain Division makes it a big game."

"Boise State RB Jeremy McNichols is listed as questionable due to a head injury, but the Broncos have relied more on their passing attack this season, throwing for 289 yards per game, while only rushing for 194 yards. When factoring in the strength of the opposing defenses, it is evident that Boise State's passing game has been much stronger as the Broncos average 8.8 yards per pass (versus opponents that allow just 7.4 ypp), while Boise rushes for just 4.2 yards per carry (versus opponents that allow 5.0 ypr)." The Broncos have outscored their opponents 204-24 during a four-game winning streak as freshman quarterback Brett Rypien has pumped life into the offense by completing 70.2 percent of his passes for 1,057 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. Senior receiver Shane Williams-Rhodes has caught a team-best 35 passes and moved into third place on the school career receptions list with 205, one ahead of Titus Young (204 from 2007-10). Senior cornerback Donte Deayon and senior safety Darian Thompson are tied for the team lead with four interceptions and Thompson nabbed his 18th career interception last Saturday to surpass the Mountain West mark set by Utah's Eric Weddle (2003-06).

ABOUT UTAH STATE (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS, 3-2 O/U):

Myers is 7-1 as a starter, has completed 65.2 percent of his passes this season and is coming off an effort in which he passed for a career-high 260 yards in last Saturday's 56-14 trouncing of Fresno State. Myers is also averaging nine yards per carry while racking up 180 rushing yards, third on the squad behind junior Devante Mays (259) and sophomore LaJuan Hunt (235). The Aggies have forced 10 turnovers (five fumbles, five interceptions) over their last three games and are led by junior inside linebacker Nick Vigil (team-high 52 tackles) and junior free safety Devin Centers (team-best two interceptions).

Magic Johnson statue defaced at Michigan State

With the battle between in-state rivals Michigan State and Michigan just days away, vandals struck the campus in East Lansing, Mich., on Thursday.

Michigan State officials were working to remove a maize 'M' and a "Beat State" inscription that was painted on a statue of former Spartans basketball great Magic Johnson outside the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

"I would like to think that most fans of both schools have a little more class," Michigan State spokesman Jason Cody said, according to the Lansing State Journal.

Two other areas on campus also were vandalized with graffiti overnight.

"Whenever we have situations like this with vandalism on campus, our police to the best of their ability will try to identify suspects," Cody said. "If suspects are identified, they will face criminal charges."

The seventh-ranked Spartans (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and the No. 12 Wolverines (5-1, 2-0) meet Saturday at Michigan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.

Such pranks are nothing new between the schools. The Spartan statue at Michigan State was painted with Michigan colors twice this year. Concerned students stood guard at the Spartan statue this week to make sure a defacing wouldn't occur.

Last year, a block "M" on Michigan's campus was painted green and the letters "S" and "U" were added.

Spartans men's basketball coach Tom Izzo wasn't exactly surprised.

"First, I've gotta say, that this is rivalry week and you're not supposed to like your opponent," Izzo said at Big Ten basketball media day in Chicago. "There's a lot of great Michigan kids, but there's some idiots. There's some idiots on our side, too, that do crazy things.

"Messing with Sparty is a bad thing, like messing with their 'M' is a bad thing. But messing with Magic, that's the worst thing. I'll make sure from now on that maybe the basketball team will sleep (out there)."

**Cincinnati at BYU**

-- This will be the first meeting between these schools. As of Wednesday, most betting shops had BYU (4-2 straight up, 4-2 against the spread) installed as a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 64. The Bearcats were +210 on the money line (risk $100 to win $210).

-- Bronco Mendenall’s club was forced to navigate a brutal September schedule that included three road games against Nebraska, UCLA and Michigan, in addition to a home contest vs. Boise State. BYU beat Nebraska 33-28 thanks to a 42-yard Hail Mary pass from Tanner Mangum to Mitch Mathews on the game’s final play. The season opener in Lincoln was bittersweet, however, as star QB Taysom Hill was lost to a season-ending knee injury. Hill had thrown for 268 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 72 yards and a pair of scores against the Cornhuskers. Mangum completed 7-of-11 throws in relief for 111 yards.

-- In Week 2 at home vs. Boise State, BYU had to rally to victory late in the fourth quarter again. Trailing 24-14 with 10:22 remaining, Mangum found paydirt on a one-yard plunge to slice the deficit to three. Then with 45 seconds left on fourth down, Mangum found Mitchell Juergens for a 35-yard scoring strike to put the Cougars in the lead. Moments later, Kai Nacua put the game on ice with a 50-yard pick six to lift BYU to a 35-24 triumph as a 2.5-point underdog. Mangum finished with 309 passing yards and two TDs, while RB Adam Hine had 93 rushing yards and one TD on 19 carries.

-- BYU went to UCLA as a 16.5-point underdog in Week 3 and nearly emerged with an upset victory. However, the Bruins were able to capture a 24-23 win by rallying from 10 down in the fourth quarter. Nate Starks’s three-yard TD run for Jim Mora Jr.’s team with 3:21 remaining lifted it into the win column. Hine ran for 149 yards and one TD in the losing effort. Mathews had nine receptions for 84 yards and one TD, while the BYU defense intercepted Josh Rose three times. Harvey Langi had a pair of picks while Nacua added another one to his season total.

-- After three emotional nail-biters, BYU had to get on an airplane again in Week 4. This time, the Cougars had to travel across two time zones and play a noon Eastern game in the Big House. Michigan jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 31-0 victory. Considering the travel and circumstances surrounding the three previous games, in addition to how well Michigan is playing (its defense has delivered two more shutouts in succession), BYU’s resume and standing in general (at least in my eyes) didn’t take a hit for that lackluster performance.

-- Since the loss at Michigan, BYU has won back-to-back home games over UConn (30-13 as a 14.5-point fave) and East Carolina. The Pirates took the cash last week as a 10-point underdog in the 45-38 defeat. BYU took a 38-21 lead into the final stanza, only to see ECU score 17 straight points to pull even with 4:01 to play. The Cougars pulled out the win thanks to an Algernon Brown nine-yard TD run with 19 ticks left. Mangum completed 24-of-33 passes for 332 yards and two TDs without an interception. Brown, filling in for the injured Hine, rushed 24 times for 134 yards and three TDs. Devon Blackmon, who starter his career at Oregon, pulled down nine receptions for 142 yards. Mathews had four catches for 72 yards and one TD.

-- For the season, Mangum has completed 62.5 percent of his throws for 1,416 yards with a 9/5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Blackmon has a team-best 27 receptions for 342 yards, while Mathews has 30 catches for 339 yards and six TDs. Hine, who has an ankle injury that’ll keep him out of action until early November, has rushed for a team-high 312 yards and two TDs. Brown has rushed for 252 yards and three scores, averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

-- Cincinnati (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) has had ample time to prepare for BYU following its 34-23 win over Miami on Oct. 1 as a 6.5-point home underdog. Redshirt freshman QB Hayden Moore completed 22-of-33 passes for 279 yards and two TDs compared to only one interception. Moore also had a one-yard TD run that put Cincy up for good late in the second quarter. Tion Green and Hosey Williams combined to rush for 170 yards, with Williams getting into the end zone on 29-yard scamper. WR Shaq Washington had eight receptions for 106 yards against the Hurricanes.

-- Since replacing Gunner Kiel when he suffered a scary head injury at Memphis, Moore has played well. He threw for a school-record 557 yards against the Tigers despite missing a good chunk of the first half. Moore had four TD passes at the Liberty Bowl, but he was also intercepted twice. Kiel is healthy now and expected to play Friday, but he may not get the starting nod. Before getting injured, Kiel had connected on 63.1 percent of his passes for 868 yards with a 5/5 TD-INT ratio.

-- Green has run for a team-best 383 yards and three TDs, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Williams has 351 rushing yards and two TDs, averaging 5.2 YPC. Washington has a team-high 34 receptions for 392 yards and two TDs.

-- This will be the fourth time Cincy has been in the road underdog role during Tommy Tuberville’s three-year tenure. The Bearcats are winless SU and 1-2 ATS in the three such previous situations. They took the cash in a 56-49 loss at Memphis three Thursdays ago.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-1 for Cincy, 2-0 in its road assignments.

-- Totals have been an overall wash for BYU (3-3), but it has seen the ‘over’ hit at a 2-1 clip in its home outings. The Cougars have seen their games average a combined score of 54.0 points per game. This will be the highest total they’ve seen this year. The previous high was 60 last week vs. ECU when the ‘over’ was an easy casher.

-- Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Boise State at Utah State**

-- Boise State, Air Force and Utah State are out to 2-0 starts in Mountain West Conference play, sharing the top spot in the Mountain Division. The Broncos and Aggies will do battle in Logan on Friday night at Maverik Stadium, a venue that holds under 26,000 people.

-- As of early Wednesday, most books had Boise St. (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) listed as a 9.5-point favorite. Several offshore shops had the total at 46.5 points.

-- Utah State (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) has won consecutive contests vs. Colorado State (33-18) and at Fresno State (56-14) since dropping back-to-back games at Utah (24-14) and at Washington (31-17). The Aggies smashed the Bulldogs last weekend as 13-point road ‘chalk’ thanks to 260 passing yards from Kent Myers, who had one TD pass without an interception. Devante Mays rushed nine times for 92 yards and three TDs, while LaJuan Hunt added 41 rushing yards and a pair of scores on 12 totes. Hunter Sharp made six receptions for 99 yards.

-- Myers threw for 866 yards with a 5/3 TD-INT ratio in five starts under center as a freshman last season. Since taking over for injured senior QB Chuckie Keeton in Week 5 vs. Colorado State, Myers has completed 65.2 percent of his throws for 397 yards and two TDs without an interception.

-- As great a career as Keeton has had, the unfortunate fact is that Utah St. might be better off with Myers under center. Keeton turned this program into a force upon his arrival in 2011. The Aggies had been to one bowl game in school history, a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl in 1997, before Keeton stepped on campus and nearly led Utah State to an upset win at Auburn, then the defending national champion, in his collegiate debut as a true freshman. Keeton started his career with 56 touchdown passes compared to only 13 interceptions, but a pair of major knee injuries have kept him mostly on the sidelines since the middle of the 2013 campaign. He started the first three games of this season before another setback with his knee put him on the shelf until at least late October. Keeton was only completing 54.5 percent of his passes and had a 2/5 TD-INT ratio.

-- Mays has rushed for a team-high 259 yards and three TDs, averaging 7.4 YPC. Devonte Robinson has 16 receptions for 254 yards and one TD, while Sharp has 16 catches for 236 yards and one TD.

-- Since losing at BYU when it allowed a late fourth-quarter lead to get away in Week 2, Boise State has won four in row by margins of 31 points or more. Bryan Harsin’s team is off a 41-10 win at Colorado St. as a 15.5-point road favorite. Brett Rypien completed 22-of-35 passes for 339 yards and one TD with one interception. Jeremy McNichols rushed for 104 yards and two TDs on 17 carries, in addition to catching six balls for 77 yards. Thomas Sperbeck had five receptions for 178 yards and two TDs.

-- Since taking over as the starting QB in Week 4, Rypien has thrived. The true freshman is connecting on 70.2 percent of his throws for 1,057 with a 7/1 TD-INT ratio. McNichols has rushed for a team-best 485 yards and 12 TDs, averaging 4.8 YPC. However, the nation’s leader in TDs (14) is ‘questionable’ against the Aggies with an undisclosed injury. He is the country’s only player to score at least a pair of TDs in each game this season.

-- BSU senior WR Shane Williams-Rhodes has a team-high 35 catches for 287 yards. Sperbeck has 27 receptions for a team-best 526 yards and five TDs. McNichols has 20 catches for 196 yards.

-- BSU ranks fifth in the country in total defense, giving up only 259.5 yards per game. The Broncos are the nation’s second-best defense against the run, allowing just 60.7 yards per contest. They are seventh in the country in scoring defense, giving up only 12.0 PPG.

-- Boise State senior CB Deonte Deayon, a second-team All-MWC selection last year when had six interceptions, is listed as ‘questionable’ due to an undisclosed injury Deayon has made four interceptions so far this season.

-- Boise State owns a 4-3 spread record in seven games as a road favorite since Harsin took over for Chris Petersen.

-- This is only the second time Matt Wells has been a home underdog since taking over for Gary Andersen in 2013. That situation came against these Broncos in ’13 when they came into Logan and won a 34-23 decision and took the cash as six-point road favorites.

-- Utah State has won 11 consecutive home games and hasn’t tasted defeat at Merlin Olsen Field since, you guessed it, the ’13 game vs. BSU.

-- Boise State has won 12 in a row over Utah State in this rivalry between schools separated by 292 miles. The Broncos, who are 7-1-2 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings, won by a 50-19 score as 10-point home ‘chalk’ last year. The ‘over’ is 7-1-1 in the last nine encounters.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-2 overall for BSU, but the ‘over’ is 2-1 in its three road assignments.

-- The ‘over’ is 3-2 overall for Utah St., 1-1 in its home outings. The ‘over’ has been a winner for the Aggies in three consecutive games with their games producing combined scores of 48, 51 and 70 points.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the CBS College Network.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Iowa senior DE Drew Ott will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL sustained in last week's 29-20 home win over Illinois. Ott had five sacks and three forced fumbles so far this season. He had eight sacks in 2014. Also, the Hawkeyes won't have their best WR, senior Tevaun Smith, for Saturday's game at Northwestern due to a knee injury.

-- Central Michigan has the nation’s best ATS record at 6-0. The only other undefeated team for our purposes is Toledo with its 4-0-1 ATS mark. Florida, Ohio, Notre Dame and Southern Miss are all sporting 5-1 ATS ledgers.

-- On the other end of the spectrum, Michigan State and Central Forida are both 0-6 versus the number. North Texas, Old Dominion and Auburn are 1-5 ATS.

-- Vandy owns a 5-1 spread record in six games as a road underdog during Derek Mason’s tenure. The Commodores are three-point underdogs Saturday at South Carolina.

-- The Westgate SuperBook currently has Ohio State listed as a one-point favorite for its regular-season finale at Michigan. The Buckeyes remain the favorite to win the College Football Playoffs with 5/2 odds. Michigan has seen its odds reduced down to 10/1. Baylor has the second-shortest odds (5/1), followed by Alabama (8/1).

-- Florida is now a three-point favorite for its regular-season finale vs. FSU. The Gators, who will now have to roll with Treon Harris under center following Will Grier’s one-year suspension for testing positive for a PED, have 30/1 odds to win the CFP.

QB Kessler leads USC to Notre Dame

LOS ANGELES (AP) Cody Kessler sees the now-familiar signs again. His Trojans are showing more sharpness in practice, more togetherness off the field and a renewed appreciation for the privilege of playing football at Southern California.

The quarterback and many of his fellow Trojans already learned how to adjust to a coaching change the first three times it happened during the past two seasons.

Kessler expects USC to handle the fourth change and the program's latest turmoil with the steadiness of experience when the Trojans (3-2, 1-2 Pac-12) attempt to rekindle the spark in their season Saturday night in their annual showdown with No. 14 Notre Dame.

''This team has been through a lot of adversity, and that's what we do best: Move on,'' Kessler said. ''We do a great job getting back to work, getting back to practice. We have an opportunity to do something great this weekend. It's going to be a crazy game out in South Bend, and we're excited.''

Interim coach Clay Helton has been unfailingly upbeat and forward-looking this week in the absence of Steve Sarkisian, who was fired Monday after showing up to practice in no condition to work.

''Anytime you have a fresh start and new beginnings, it's exciting for anybody,'' Helton said. ''And plus, it's rivalry week. It's Notre Dame. That's special. It's SC versus Notre Dame. That's going to provide a little bit of the juice, and I think these guys want to go out and prove something.''

Helton, Kessler and the Trojans got even more support Thursday during their final practice before their afternoon flight to Indiana: USC greats Keyshawn Johnson, Willie McGinest and Keith Rivers joined about 20 former players who gathered to support the players, with several sharing words in the post-practice huddle.

Helton also allowed a group of students into the normally closed Thursday practice to cheer on the players. Helton said he has received countless messages of support from the program's greats, including a text from Marcus Allen, one of his childhood idols.

''When he reaches out to you with his support, as well as numerous other players, this is the most humbling experience I've had in my lifetime,'' said Helton, whose father, Kim, was an assistant coach on Allen's Los Angeles Raiders teams in the early 1990s. ''For those type of men to reach out is mind-blowing to me. It won't hit me until probably later on, but I appreciate every one.''

Meanwhile, Kessler insisted he was thinking more about improving his poor play last week than struggling with Sarkisian's abrupt departure. Kessler and Helton, his former position coach, have a tight bond.

After having four head coaches in 2013, Kessler says the USC upheaval ''doesn't affect me.''

''I've been through pretty much everything that you can possibly think of since I've been here,'' Kessler said. ''My phone has been ringing and people texting me, saying, `Are you OK? Are you OK?' I'm fine. I'm great. I've been through everything. I've learned from it. I've been through adversity. I've been through this same exact situation, and I know how to handle this. It's the younger guys that I need to be there for.''

During the Trojans' weekly Family Dinner on Tuesday night, the players and coaches watched a screening of ESPN's new documentary on the Trojans' great teams of the previous decade. The coincidental timing was odd, but the largely complimentary film was a welcome reminder.

''You really see how powerful SC is, and the brand of SC and how special this place is,'' Helton said. ''There's no other place like it in the world.''

Others who have checked in on USC include Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott, who hates to watch a league power in upheaval.

''I certainly feel for everyone involved during the season obviously an unusual situation to make a coaching change in the middle of the season,'' Scott said Wednesday during the Pac-12 women's basketball media day in San Francisco. ''When I reached out, it was because I was first and foremost concerned about Steve, someone I've gotten to know well over the years from the time I started in the conference. Terrific guy. I really just feel bad for what he's going through and wish the best for him.''

ASU and Utah playing marquee game

The Pac-12 winds up the second half of the season with a big game in the South, a handful of other games that could impact division races and a matchup between Notre Dame and Southern California that has added significance after the Trojans fired coach Steve Sarkisian.

Here's a few things to look for this week in the Pac-12:

GAME OF THE WEEK:

Arizona State at No. 4 Utah. The Utes (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) have been the dominant team in the Pac-12 so far, rising to the top of the Pac-12 South with a balanced offense and a defense that's tied for second nationally with 17 turnovers. The Sun Devils (4-2, 2-1) got off to a shaky start, including a blowout loss at home to Southern California, but are starting to play their best football of the season after convincing wins over UCLA and Colorado. A win by Utah will put it firmly in control of the Pac-12 South. An upset by Arizona State throws the division potentially into a bit of chaos. The Sun Devils won by three in overtime in Tempe last season.

BEST MATCHUP:

Oregon at Washington. The Ducks have dominated the series, winning the last 11 games. The 108th meeting could have a different feel to it. Oregon, which played for last season's national championship, already has three losses - two of those at home. The Huskies have been steady most of the season and picked up the marquee win in two seasons under coach Chris Petersen when they beat USC in Southern California last weekend. This is Washington's best chance yet to beat Oregon for the first time since 2003.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Utah is one of 16 undefeated FBS teams. ... Pac-12 road teams are 10-5 in conference games. .... Oregon State and Washington State will be meeting for the 100th time. ... California is the lone Pac-12 team with a bye week. ... Arizona leads the Pac-12 in scoring with 42.3 points per game and is on pace to break the school record of 38.5 set in 1954.

IMPACT PLAYER:

Luke Falk, Washington State. The Cougars' quarterback had a huge game against Oregon last week, throwing for 505 yards and five TDs ib 50-of-74 passing. He will face the Pac-12's best pass defense in Oregon State, which gives up 177.6 yards per game through the air.

No. 3 TCU on the road again at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) TCU has been defined by its resilience.

With another road win at Iowa State on Saturday, the third-ranked Horned Frogs will head into their bye week having survived a very tough stretch unscathed.

TCU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) will play a Power Five opponent away from Fort Worth for the fourth time when they face the Cyclones (2-3, 1-1).

The Horned Frogs' first two road games in league play have been way too close for coach Gary Patterson's comfort. They beat Texas Tech 55-52 on a last-second TD pass and rallied from 18 down to stun Kansas State 52-45 last week.

Indiana hoping to be back to full strength against Rutgers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) For Indiana, all eyes will be on the offensive backfield when the Hoosiers face Rutgers on Saturday.

Specifically, the focus will be on seeing whether quarterback Nate Sudfeld and tailback Jordan Howard are in the starting lineup.

Both players missed last week's 29-7 loss to Penn State because of ankle injuries and neither player played in the fourth quarter the week before against top-ranked Ohio State.

Sudfeld and Howard are the top two options on offense as Indiana (4-2, 0-2 Big Ten) looks to snap a two-game losing streak. Last year, Rutgers (2-3, 0-2) rallied from six points down at halftime to beat Indiana 45-23.

Sudfeld leads the Big Ten in yards passing per game (255.4), fewest interceptions (one) and is second in the conference in total offense, averaging 263.6 yards per game. Howard leads the Big Ten and is seventh nationally in yards rushing per game at 141.8.

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson said Monday that Sudfeld had seen his first extensive practice action the night before and that Howard had also got some running in. There has been no update on their conditions this week.

''(Sudfeld) did more last night at practice than any day last week,'' Wilson said Monday in his weekly news conference. ''Jordan (Howard) was running last night. His deal is making cuts. We'll see as we go through the week where he sets up.''

Rutgers' defensive players insisted it doesn't matter to them if Sudfeld or Howard are in the lineup.

''Honestly, I don't look at it,'' defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph said. ''I look at it as everyone is a starter. I don't look at it as someone is hurt. We prepare (the same). That doesn't even enter our mind. It's all about us. What we need to do is to stop them. We don't worry about who's playing, who's not playing. We just know they're a great team and we have to stop them. It's plain and simple.''

Here are some other things to watch this weekend:

INDIANA DEFENSE REMAINS OPPORTUNISTIC:

Indiana leads the Big Ten and is tied for sixth nationally in turnover margin with a plus-9. The Hoosiers are tied for first in the Big Ten with 12 takeaways and second in the conference with seven fumble recoveries. They have scored 58 points off the 12 turnovers including two interception returns for touchdowns.

BLOCKED KICK SPECIALISTS:

Since 2009, Rutgers leads the nation with 43 blocked kicks (both field goals and punts). In fact, Rutgers has blocked at least four kicks per year since 2007. It took the Scarlet Knights six games to get their first one this season but that came last week when Djwany Mera blocked a field-goal attempt against Michigan State.

SPECIAL TEAMS IS STRENGTH VS. STRENGTH:

Rutgers is fourth in the Big Ten averaging 25.2 yards per kickoff return including a pair of touchdowns. All other Big Ten teams have combined for two kickoff return scores. The Scarlet Knights' returners will have a challenge this week, however, facing Indiana kicker Griffin Oakes. Oakes leads the Big Ten and is 10th nationally with 25 touchbacks this season. Oakes also leads the conference in touchback percentage at 69.4 percent.

HOWARD NAMED TO MAXWELL WATCH LIST:

Howard has missed the last 1 1/2 games for Indiana with an ankle injury but that didn't stop him from being added Thursday to the Maxwell Award Watch List. The Maxwell Award is given to the top college football player each season. Howard is seventh nationally (and first in the Big Ten) averaging 141.8 yards rushing per game.

HOOSIERS LOOKING TO OPEN 5-2:

After dropping decisions to Ohio State and Penn State the last two weeks, Indiana will have its third quest of a fifth win when it faces Rutgers. The last time Indiana was 5-2 in a season was in 2007. That was also the last time an IU team went to a bowl game. Prior to that, the last 5-2 start was in 1994.

Boise ready for defensive-minded Utah St.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Boise State has rolled through Mountain West play since dropping its lone game against BYU in the final minute of regulation. The 21st-ranked Broncos have outscored their four opponents 204-24 since the loss, but coach Bryan Harsin doesn't want his team to get comfortable.

Boise State (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) play at Utah State on Friday and Harsin knows the recent offensive explosions won't come so easily. The Aggies (3-2, 2-0), have the No. 2 scoring defense in the conference and are allowing just 19.2 points per game. The run defense is also No. 2 after giving up 102.2 yards per game.

''They'll challenge you. ... They're trying to attack,'' Harsin said. ''That's a mindset.''

The Broncos have the top passing offense in the Mountain West, led by freshman Brett Rypien. That, however, puts a premium on protection and Boise State expects the Aggies to bring plenty of pressure from a unit that has eight sacks in the last two games. Harsin specifically mentioned linebacker Kyler Fackrell, who had a two sacks last game.

''He might be one of the best college football players out there,'' Harsin said. ''That guy is very good. We've got a huge challenge to try to block him and contain him.''

Utah State is trying to hold onto a share of the Mountain West Mountain Division lead. The Aggies, Broncos and Air Force are all tied with 2-0 conference records. Boise State, though, has won 12 straight against Utah State.

''It's not the championship game, but it's a big game and basically puts the winner in the driver's seat,'' Utah State coach Matt Wells said. ''That's why it's important, no question. We're excited for the challenge.

''What Bryan Harsin and his staff do schematically makes you rethink a lot of things you do, especially in the run game and protection-wise on offense.''

Things to watch when Utah State hosts Boise State

MCNICHOLS WATCH:

Boise State RB Jeremy McNichols continues to lead the country with 14 total touchdowns, but his status for Friday night is unknown. Harsin said McNichols was ''looked at'' for a possible concussion after leaving the Colorado State win following his 1-yard TD run in the third quarter. If McNichols isn't cleared, the Broncos have depth at running back with Stanford transfer Kelsey Young and junior Devan Demas getting their share of carries so far this season.

PICK ME:

The secondary has been a strength for Boise State during most of its run of success and this season is no different. Darian Thompson and Jonathan Moxey both had interceptions last week against Colorado State and the Broncos lead the country with 13 picks. Thompson's interception was the 18th of his career, moving him into a tie for the all-time lead in the Mountain West.

BEST SERVED COLD:

Utah State was trounced 50-19 when the two teams met in 2014. Defensive end Ricky Ali'ifua, however, said revenge isn't a motivation this week. ''Sometimes that can cloud your responsibilities as far as what you're supposed to do and ... and sometimes drain you mentally,'' Ali'ifua said. ''I remember it very vividly and it's very fresh in my mind. ... If we want to reach our goal of a Mountain West championship, we know the road goes through Boise.''

MIGHTY MEYERS:

Utah State sophomore quarterback Kent Myers is 2-0 as a starter since senior Chuckie Keeton went down with a knee injury. He's 7-1 as a starter in his two years and was named Mountain West offensive player of the week two weeks ago. Myers has been strong with the ball and hasn't thrown an interception in 46 attempts. He's completed 65.2 percent of his passes and has a 152.06 efficiency rating. That will be tested by the opportunistic Broncos defense.

Total Notes - Week 7

We’re coming up on the midway point of the college football season and the betting public bounced back with some easy ‘over’ winners in Week 6, which was a complete 180 of the extraordinary amount of ‘under’ tickets in Week 5.

Here's what we got for Week 7.

1) Correct sharp movement: Oregon State/Washington State OVER

This movement represents one of the largest jumps this week and the move is definitely warranted. The opener of 55.5 was soft and I feel this game is still playable at the current number of 62.5.

Washington State has rebounded well from an opening week loss to FCS Portland State (24-17) and with their 45-38 overtime win last week over Oregon most have forgotten that head coach Mike Leach could have been a play or two away from losing his job during the Rutgers game.

The Cougars were off that loss to an FCS school and trailing Rutgers late before rallying, with a loss in that game their season could have headed in a very different direction. The Cougars have been productive offensively scoring 37.31,28, and 45 points in their last four games vs FBS competition and Leach coached teams always seem to find an offensive flow.

The Cougars still throw the ball a ton which lengthens game and puts stress on their defense. The cracks have begun to show defensively already as Washington State has allowed an increasing amount of yards to each of their four FBS foes (402, 409, 469, 533) and allowed the Ducks to run for 8.2 ypc last week.

Oregon State has allowed 40 points per game to their Power 5 opponents and have never been a good defensive team on the road. The Beavers do have a dynamic young QB in Seth Collins and I think he'll have success on the ground versus a mediocre Cougars rush defense. BIG win for Washington State last week vs. Oregon and this is a definite letdown spot for them, I think the letdown will come on the defensive side of the ball allowing the Beavers to stay in this game and drive the number OVER the total.

2) Incorrect sharp movement: New Mexico State/Georgia Southern UNDER

I'm surprised at the movement downward here as most betting groups employ at least one decent game modeler and there is no way any of those modeled projections show the Georgia Southern Eagles rushing for less than 400 yards in this game, that will make it difficult to keep this total down.

My projections have the Eagles running for 451 yards and totaling 51 points, which would mean that just two TD's from New Mexico State would push this game OVER the total. Georgia Southern leads the nation in rushing yards per game (377 ypg) and the Aggies rank in the bottom five in the country in stopping the run.

The Aggies will have trouble getting off the field and will likely surrender more than 8 yards per carry, those are recipes for defensive disaster.

Despite some atrocious defensive numbers, NMSU has been able to remain competitive vs non-Power 5 teams, losing by just two, three, and nine points. I think they can throw the ball on the Eagles and slip in under the 4 TD spread which should help push this number OVER the reduced total.

I think sharps are relying on a running clock shortening this game and a blowout making a waste of the last five minutes. I don't think they'll get either and this game is exceeds even the opening total.

3) Public movement: Cincinnati/BYU OVER

Throwing in a little Friday Night Football information for our loyal readers. No surprise that the early public bettors like this game OVER the total. In most people's minds this game should play out similarly to BYU's home game last week vs East Carolina (45-38), a game that was bet up and finished OVER the total.

That matchup featured two Top-20 pass offenses as does this one. That game was bet up from 56 to 60 and featured 83 points, this game has been bet up by five points from 61 to 66. Just with that simple analysis, it's easy to see that there is very little line value left in playing this game OVER the total as a mere 10 days ago this line would have likely opened 58. With that said, I'm unwilling to fade the public here unless the line reaches 70.

4) Market manipulation: Nebraska/Minnesota OVER

I don't think it's too unsettling to see the line on this Nebraska game creep up and certain groups, relying on the fact that Nebraska is perceived as an OVER team in 2015, have given this a gentle nudge upward. With the line reaching 49 expect to see the buyback start and if for some reason this line is pushed to 51, expect the buyback to come swiftly and in chunks.

Nebraska has benefitted from playing some shoddy defensive teams and now that Big 10 play has begun they've responded with 13 points vs. Illinois and 21 points vs. Wisconsin. The sledding will not get any easier on the road vs a very good Minnesota Gophers stop unit. Minnesota allows just 19 PPG and a mere 306 YPG, led by a secondary that is playing as one of the best units it the country.

The Cornhuskers have played poorly in their two away games and only an out of character 4th quarter of offense at Miami prevents their road numbers from looking even worse. Nebraska has to be emotionally worn down form an string of close and frustrating losses and playing a methodical and pedestrian team like Minnesota will be a tedious task for them that's mentally challenging.

The Gophers have played two decent defenses this year and have scored 10 and zero points, they also managed to play a game vs TCU that totaled just 40 combined points. Minny is comfortable with it's slow and methodical style, they struggle to throw the ball, and know they can only win this game with defense and field position. I made the number for this game 44.5, groups are moving this one up in a head fake and I think we'll see this number close lower than 47.

Team to Watch: Bowling Green Falcons

This week: -11 vs. Akron Zips

The Bowling Green Falcons are one of the most explosive offenses, not only in the MAC but in the entire country. Their consistent ability to play for four quarters, always looking for the open man downfield, has made them one of the most exciting teams to watch in the country. Matt Johnson is proving to be a quarterback to watch and even though he is not receiving much media attention, he has been putting up Heisman-type numbers this season.

There are few teams in the country that can go score-for-score with the Falcons. Even though they do have some issues on the defensive side of the ball, their offense has been more than enough not only to keep them in games but have allowed them to cover hefty spreads as well. That should be the case again in this contest as the Zips simply don't have enough rounds in the chamber to keep up.

Team to beware of: Toledo Rockets

This week: -30 vs. Eastern Michigan

The Toledo Rockets are off to a 5-0 start to the season and have built up quite an impressive resume. Many considered their win over the Arkansas Razorbacks to be somewhat of a fluke, but since then they have continued to pile up the victories and appear to be the frontrunner for a date in the MAC championship game and are even eyeing a potential at-large bid to a big-name Bowl Game.

All things considered, Toledo is a good team. However, now that the Rockets are in the national spotlight and have caught the eye of the casual sports bettor, any value that this team once had has now dried up. At this point in the season, because of their resume and high ranking, the oddsmakers have likely inflated the number on their games. Such is the case this week when they take on Eastern Michigan. This game does have blowout written all over as both teams are currently at different ends of the spectrum, but we wouldn't be surprised in Eastern Michigan finds a way to backdoor this extremely generous number.

Total team: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

This week: 69 at North Texas Mean Green

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers have finally settled into their groove offensive and Brandon Doughty continually manages to put up video game numbers the past couple of weeks and there is little that any team has been able to do to stop them. Defense was a major hole in the Hilltoppers game last season and even though they aren’t especially stout on the defensive end of the ball, they have made great strides in the offseason.

The North Texas Mean Green are far from the team that they have been in seasons past. Their offense simply has not found any rhythm and their once vaunted defense has clearly taken a step back. They were recently trounced 66-7 at home by FCS Portland State and that performance has likely left a bad taste in their mouths. While they don’t stand much of a chance in this contest, we do expect them to have a bit more of a showing than their performance last week, especially on defense.
