        Week 6

        Saturday's games
        Top 13 games

West Virginia beat Oklahoma State 30-21/34-10 last to years; TY in LY's game was 448-436, but WVa was +2 in turnovers. Mountaineers are 2-0 as home favorites this year, after going 3-9 in that role from '12-'14. OSU won its first two Big X games by total of five points; they're 5-5-1 last 11 games as a road underdog- since '08, they're 38-22 vs spread in game following a win.

Indiana lost 13-7 at home to Penn State LY after upsetting them 44-24 at home year before; they lost 45-22 (+17) in last visit here in '12. Hoosiers started 4-0 vs parade of stiffs, then gave Ohio State stiff test LW, losing 34-27 (+22) at home (TY 402-517). Since 2011, Indiana is 7-11 as a road underdog- they won only road game this year, at Wake Forest. Penn St. is playing fifth road game in row (2-2 as HF). Indiana QB Sudfeld missed end of LW's game with an injury.

Arkansas is on road for third week in row, upsetting Tennessee LW after losing previous three games; Hogs are 5-9 as road dog since '11- they are 4-4 under Bielema. Arkansas lost last eight games with Alabama (2-5 vs spread in last seven); favorites are 7-5 vs spread in last 12 series games- underdog hasn't won SU since '02. Tide beat Arkansas 14-13 LY; they won as dog at Georgia LW, their first game as an underdog last six years. Tide is 0-3 as a home favorite this season.

Tennessee lost last two games, both at home, by total of five points, as doubts of coach Jones' game management are getting louder. Georgia won last five games with the Vols, winning 34-31/20-12 in last two played in Knoxville (5-2 in last seven here). Dawgs are 11-8 as road favorite since '09; they won 31-14 at Vandy in only road game. Tennessee is 3-1 as a home underdog under Jones. SEC home underdogs are 4-2 this season.

Last 10+ years, Navy is 24-9 as road underdog; they beat rival Air Force last week. Middies covered 10 of last 11 visits here, is 12-8 vs spread in last 20 series games. Notre Dame lost at Clemson LW, plays USC next; dangerous sandwich game here vs Navy squad they beat 38-34/49-39 last two years, not the walkovers you'd expect. Irish are 2-0 as home favorite this year, 20-31-3 since 2005, 12-13-2 under Kelly.

Florida State won its last five games with Miami (3 of 5 by 13+ points); favorites covered last two years, after dogs covered previous eight. FSU is 2-7 in last nine games as home favorite; all four of their wins this year are by 8+ points, but they were outgained 357-329 at Wake Forest last week. Miami gave up 67 points last two games, losing at Cincinnati last Thursday; they're 1-6-1 vs spread in last eight games as a road underdog.

Michigan beat Northwestern 10-9 LY, in OT the two years before that, so figure 5-0 Wildcats have this game circled- they won 19-10 at Duke in only road game, are 17-8 as road underdogs since '08. Michigan shut out last two opponents, allowed total of 14 points in last four games; they're 16-12 as home favorites since '11. Wildcats beat Stanford/Minnesota and allowed total of six points in doing so- they're bowl eligible with a win.

Clemson hung on to a rainy, emotional win over Notre Dame last week, trap game here vs Georgia Tech team that allowed 34 ppg in losing last three games, all as favorite- Tech completed 26-67 passes in the losses. Home side won last six Tech-Clemson games; Jackets lost last three in Death Valley by 24-16-14 points, allowing 43 ppg- they're 12-9 as road underdog under Johnson. Clemson is 23-17 as home fave under Swinney.

Utah won three of last four games with Cal; teams haven't met since '12. Golden Bears scored 36.3 ppg in winning last three games by total of 13 points- they have 732 PY last two games. Cal covered its last five as a road underdog. Utes are 13-11-1 as home favorites since '10; they waxed Oregon 62-20 in Eugene last game; they're 8-7 as home faves since 2012. Utah beat Michigan 24-17; Wolverines allowed 24 points in four games since then, so that win looks better and better.

LSU-South Carolina game was moved to Baton Rouge because of all the flooding in Palmetto State. Tigers won last five games with Carolina, but last meeting was 23-21 in '12. LSU allowed between 19-24 points in last four games; they completed only 4-15 passes in tougher-than-should-be win over 44-22 win over Eastern Michigan. Gamecocks allowed 34 ppg in losing their first three SEC games; they're 10-11 as road dogs since '08.

Oregon State won six of last seven games with Arizona; six of last eight series games were decided by 7 or less points. Beavers won last three in Tucson, all by 3 or less points. OSU's losses this season are by 18-28, which happens when playing freshman QB; they're 0-4 last four games as road underdog. Arizona allowed 111 points in losing last two games- favorites covered their last three lined games. Arizona is 8-10 as a home favorite under RichRod.

TCU scored 50+ points in winning last three games, but their road wins are by 6-3 points; Horned Frogs are 3-10 as road favorites since '11, 0-2 this year. TCU hammered Kansas State 41-20 LY after losing previous two meetings; Frogs lost 33-31 in last visit here. Game of the Day: Northwestern at Michigan
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan has won nine of the last 10 meetings with Northwestern. N

Northwestern Wildcats at Michigan Wolverines (-7.5, 34)

No. 21 Michigan looks to continue its resurgence under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh when it hosts 14th-ranked Northwestern on Saturday. The Wolverines have won four straight games, including an impressive 31-0 victory over BYU in Week 4, and are coming off a 28-0 triumph over Maryland to earn back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2000.

Michigan is ranked second nationally in total defense (184 ypg) and has outscored its opponents 119-7 in its last 15 quarters as it strives to beat the Wildcats for the fifth consecutive time. Northwestern is 5-0 for the first time since 2012 after blasting Minnesota 27-0 on Saturday. The Wildcats lead the nation in scoring defense (7 ppg) and hope to beat Michigan for the first time since Nov. 15, 2008 after some heartbreaking defeats along the way, including two of the last three meetings in overtime. "This will be the best team we've played all year and you compound that with being on the road and this will be a great challenge for our team," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald told reporters. "Coach Harbaugh and his staff have done a terrific job in their first year."

          WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Wildcats defense is the real deal, and they recorded their second shutout of the season in a 27-0 home win over Minnesota last week. The Wolverines have won four straight, recording back to back shutouts over BYU and Maryland. They didn't have their leading rusher De'Veon Smith against the Terps, and he's questionable to play this week against Northwestern."

          WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"Joe P. is loving the dog in this one for a change. The line opened at 9.5 and quickly made its way down to 7.5. The bets are 3-1 on Northwestern 7.5, and the money is 2-1. I imagine things will level out a bit, and the line will be pretty stable where it is."

Sophomore running back Justin Jackson rushed for 120 yards in the win over Minnesota to notch his 10th career 100-yard rushing game. Linebacker Anthony Walker, who leads the team with 44 tackles, has been a revelation for the Wildcats as he's recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and also returned a fumble for a touchdown to put the game out of reach against the Golden Gophers. Northwestern has held four opponents to 10 points or fewer this season and is fifth nationally in total defense, giving up 247.4 yards per game.

          ABOUT MICHIGAN (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS, 0-5 O/U):
De'Veon Smith, who leads the Wolverines with 331 rushing yards and five total touchdowns, missed the win over Maryland with a foot injury but is expected to play on Saturday. Senior defensive end Mario Ojemudia was having one of the finest games of his career before he suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the second half against the Terrapins that will effectively end his collegiate career. Senior quarterback Jake Rudock continued his struggles as he was limited to 16-of-32 passing for 180 yards and threw his sixth interception of the season.

          TRENDS:

          * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
          * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
          * Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
          * Under is 6-0 in Wolverines last six home games.

Northwestern-Michigan could be Under bettors' dream

When the Michigan Wolverines and Northwestern Wildcats square off in Ann Arbor Saturday, it will be a contest between the two top Under bets in the country.

Both the Wildcats and Wolverines are 0-5 Over/Under to begin the season and the reason for that? Well, defense of course.

Northwestern has pitched two shutouts so far (vs. Eastern Illinois, vs. Minnesota) and has given up the fewest points in the country so far (35). Right behind them is Michigan who has also blanked two opponents (vs. BYU, at Maryland) and has conceded just 38 points - 24 if those at Utah in Week 1.

The past two meetings between these two Big Ten rivals have resulted in cashed Under bets, including a 10-9 Michigan win last season.

            Vols dismiss WR Howard

Tennessee senior wide receiver Alton "Pig" Howard was dismissed from the team on Wednesday by coach Butch Jones for a violation of unspecified team rules.

Howard missed the Vols' season-opening win over Bowling Green because of a suspension for a violation of team rules and sat out the past two games with a concussion. He had one catch for 8 yards in two games this year.

Jones did not specify whether the dismissall was related to Howard's earlier suspension.

West Virginia loses S Joseph to knee injury

West Virginia will be without one of its top players for the remainder of the season after standout safety Karl Joseph suffered a knee injury during a non-contact drill in practice on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers announced Wednesday that Joseph, a senior who was a first-team All-Big 12 player in 2014, has played his last college game.

Joseph was tied for the FBS lead in interceptions with five. Three of those came in West Virginia's season opener against Georgia Southern. He was named the Big 12 player of the week and national player of the week by the Football Writers Association of America after his performance in that game.

Rutgers WR Carroo back with team

Rutgers senior wide receiver Leonte Carroo was reinstated to the team on Wednesday by coach Kyle Flood after missing the past two games.

Chance of thunderstorms at Clemson Saturday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 73 percent chance of thunderstorms when the Clemson Tigers host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will be in the high-60s with wind blowing across the field at around six miles per hour.

The Tigers are presently 7-point home favorites and books have the total tabbed at 54.5.

Coach Strong still optimistic amid Longhorns start

The Texas Longhorns are off to their worst start since going 1-9 in 1956, but coach Charlie Strong remains optimistic.

"You have to find leadership and you've got to get them all to buy in," Strong told reporters. "When you're a young team like the youth that we have right now and you don't have any leaders to step up with your older guys, then you're going to have the issues because what's happening now is most of your playmakers are the young guys."

The Longhorns face the Oklahoma Sooners in the latest edition of the Red River Rivalry Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma has won four of the past five meetings, but the Longhorns have covered the spread in the previous two.

Can Baylor eclipse another huge total Saturday?

                71, 78, 74, 88.

Those are the totals that have been eclipsed in Baylor Bears games en route to a 4-0 Over/Under mark so far this season.

The Bears face another lofty total when they visit the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday afternoon. Books opened the number at 77 but that has since come down to 75.5.

The teams have surpassed closing totals in five of their previous seven meetings and in back-to-back seasons heading into Saturday's game. Baylor triumphed 60-14 last season, easily taking down the closing 59.5 number.

Ohio State hoping for repeat of 2014 thumping

The Ohio State Buckeyes rolled to a 52-24 victory over Maryland last season in the first meeting between the schools and the Buckeyes - and their backers - will hope for similar dominance when the two teams meet Saturday.

The Buckeyes are presently pegged as 31.5-point home favorites but have gone just 1-4 against the spread this season, losing four-straight games at the betting window heading into Week 6.

Ohio State did cover as 6.5-point road favorites in last season's meeting with Maryland.

At present, the Vols are 2.5-point home underdogs and the total is up to 59.5 from the opening 55.5.

Under has been the right wager in Wake-BC meetings

Under bets have bone 5-0 in the past five meetings between Wake Forest and Boston College. The two ACC teams meet up at Alumni Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's total is currently tabbed at a low 37 points which would be the lowest total in the past six seasons. Last year, BC prevailed 23-17 at Wake, just staying under the closing number of 41.

The teams have combined to average 39.6 points scored per game over the course of those previous five meetings.

                    No. 7 LSU 45, South Carolina 24

BATON ROUGE, La. - Heisman Trophy candidate Leonard Fournette raced 87 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the second half, shredding the Gamecocks' defense for 158 yards on 20 carries in three quarters, to lift the Tigers to victory.

The game, which was originally scheduled as a South Carolina home game but shifted to Baton Rouge on Wednesday because of record flooding in the South Carolina midlands, showcased LSU's relentless running attack.

LSU amassed 396 rushing yards on 54 carries, including 209 on 17 carries in the third quarter in which the Tigers scored touchdowns on drives of 90, 80 and 75 yards.

                    No. 8 Alabama 27, Arkansas 14

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Hogs did their best to spoil Homecoming Weekend for the Crimson Tide, but in the end the Tide wore down Arkansas and pulled away.

With Arkansas leading late in the third quarter, Jake Coker hit freshman Calvin Ridley in stride for an 81-yard touchdown and Alabama had a lead it would not relinquish.

Following a failed fake punt by Arkansas, Coker led another scoring drive that resulted in another Tide touchdown. Derrick Henry added a one-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

DALLAS -- Unranked, the Longhorns used a potent rushing attack to rack up 313 yards and a stifling defense to stun the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl.

The Longhorns salvaged what seemed to be a lost season by dominating in the trenches against the previously unbeaten Sooners.

Texas got 117 yards on the ground by running back D'Onta Foreman on just nine carries and 115 more from quarterback Jerrod Heard.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Gators scored touchdowns on two of its first three drives and that all they would need against the Tigers.

For good measure, Florida's defense added the final points of the night on a 40-yard touchdown return by Jalen Tabor after an interception of Missouri quarterback Drew Lock.

Florida's defense stymied Missouri's offense all night, forcing the Tigers to go 1-14 on third downs and 0-1 on fourth.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Wolverines hit the accelerator on the opening drive and the Wildcats left with tire marks on their backs by the time the final seconds ticked off the clock at Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Michigan's fifth consecutive victory set the stage for a showdown with rival Michigan State next week and might have opened some eyes to the Wolverines as a legitimate contender.

The Wolverines have not allowed a point in the last 12 quarters, outscoring the opposition 97-0. The Wildcats mustered 38 yards on 25 running plays (1.5 yards per rush), had 168 total yards and converted just two of 13 third downs.

It was a better result than last week when the Rebels suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Florida Gators in The Swamp.

The Aggies are one of the lowest-rated teams in the FBS ranks, allowing 182 points to their opponents in the first four weeks.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Volunteers' second-half struggles have been well-chronicled so far this fall, but against the Bulldogs, that trend was reversed.

In two of their previous three losses, the Vols had blown double-digit leads. Not this time.

Trailing 24-3 late in the second quarter, Tennessee roared back, scoring four straight touchdowns. The final came on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Dobbs to running back Alvin Kamara, putting the Vols up 31-24.

Oklahoma State was in danger of losing to West Virginia for the third straight season after blowing a 15-point halftime lead. But the Cowboys found a way, just as they did against Texas and Kansas State the past two weeks.

West Virginia's Skyler Howard ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 2:44 left in regulation to tie the score at 26, but his fourth-and-11 pass in overtime fell incomplete in the end zone.
