Michigan opens as 9-point home favorites against Northwestern in Week 6

A lot of eyes are on Ann Arbor, Mich., this season, with former Wolverines quarterback Jim Harbaugh back at his alma mater as the head coach. But Michigan’s opponent this week should also be catching some eyes heading into a key Big Ten showdown in Week 6 of the college football season.

The Northwestern Wildcats opened the year with a 16-6 upset of Stanford as a 10-point home pup, and they haven’t looked back since then, pushing their record to 5-0 SU (3-2 ATS). On Saturday, Northwestern blanked Minnesota 27-0 giving 4.5 points at home.

The Wolverines opened the season with a 24-17 loss catching 5 points at Utah – a defeat looking more and more respectable by the week – but have followed up with four consecutive double-digit victories. Michigan (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) dumped Maryland 28-0 Saturday as a hefty 13.5-point road chalk, the Wolverines’ second straight shutout.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, is certainly impressed with Northwestern, though the Wynn tabbed the Wildcats 9-point underdogs to the Wolverines.

“I’m starting to believe in the 5-0 Wildcats,” Avello said. “It wasn’t the victories over Stanford or Duke that bowled me over, but this past weekend’s 27-0 win over Minnesota. Although the Gophers are not among college football’s elite, Coach Jerry Kill’s squad is always prepared for its opponent. But the Gophers were shut down in every aspect of the game.

“As for Michigan, their opponents have combined for 14 total points over the last four games, and that loss to Utah doesn’t look so bad right now.”

Miami Hurricanes at Florida State Seminoles

The Seminoles (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS), a hefty 18-point favorite Saturday at Wake Forest, held on for a 24-16 victory. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) head to Tallahassee after a stinging 34-23 loss at Cincinnati laying 7 points on Thursday night.

Last year, Florida State rallied for a 30-26 road win as 1.5-point road chalk. Avello is waiting to set the line for this year’s meeting, due to Seminoles star running back Dalvin Cook being day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

“It was an overall bad night for the Hurricanes at Cincinnati. Multiple penalties and sloppy play eliminated any chance for a win,” Avello said. “Miami has lost five straight in this rivalry (2-3 ATS), but if Cook doesn’t play for Florida State, the Seminoles may be just a short favorite.”

Oklahoma Sooners (-14) vs. Texas Longhorns

The Sooners are rolling, and the Longhorns are arguably as awful as they’ve ever been, as the Red River Rivalry resumes on a neutral field at the Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) smacked West Virginia 44-24 Saturday as a 6.5-point home fave. On the flip side, Texas (1-4 SU and ATS) got boatraced at Texas Christian, losing 50-7 as a 14-point underdog.

The Sooners are 4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS in their last five against Texas.

“Oklahoma hasn’t stumbled yet, but this is typically the time of the season where the Sooners do,” Avello said. “Although not winning, Texas appeared to be making positive strides until the TCU contest. But playing on TCU’s home turf usually doesn’t turn out to be a pleasant experience for most.”

California Golden Bears at Utah Utes (-7)

It’s a collision of two teams that probably weren’t expected to be undefeated at this stage of the season, with the Golden Bears and the Utes aiming to stay on top of the Pac-12 North and South divisions, respectively.

Cal (5-0, 3-2 SU) had to battle back on the road Saturday to top Washington State 34-28, falling well short as a 16.5-point favorite. Meanwhile, Utah (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) will enter this game well rested and coming off a huge road upset, as the Utes blasted Oregon 62-20 catching 10.5 points on Sept. 26.

“Cal hasn’t played Utah since 2012. That year, the Bears were 3-5 heading to Utah and were a 1-point dog, and lost the game by over three touchdowns (49-27),” Avello said. “The Utes will be slightly more of a favorite than they were in that 2012 matchup, but this game will be much more meaningful in a Pac-12 North/South clash.”

South Carolina-LSU game could be moved

Storms and record rainfall produced by Hurricane Joaquin caused widespread damage in South Carolina and could force the university to move Saturday's game against LSU.

South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said he hopes a game Saturday against LSU can be played in Columbia, S.C., at Williams-Brice Stadium. But contingencies have been discussed, including playing at LSU or relocating the game elsewhere.

"We are not 100 percent sure that we will have a game at Williams-Brice at this time," he said Tuesday. "Our intentions are to stay on schedule and play here in Columbia but it's not definite."

South Carolina officials contacted Carolina Panthers officials about the possibility of moving the game to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., the Charlotte Observer reported.

The Panthers have a bye this week, but the presence of a NASCAR Sprint Cup race Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway will make vacant hotel rooms hard to find.

Columbia received 12.45 inches of rain in three days. Other areas in the region measured more than 18 inches and coastal cities were deluged by 23 inches to 25 inches of rain during the weekend storm.

The Columbia State reported that Williams-Brice Stadium got through the storm without major damage, and the field was relative dry Tuesday morning.

No. 1 Seminoles RB Cook is day-to-day

Florida State running back Dalvin Cook is day-to-day with a hamstring issue that doesn't seem to be as serious as first thought.

Cook was injured while slowing down as he was running out of bounds during the first quarter of Saturday's game against Wake Forest.

He sat out of the second half of the Seminoles 24-16 victory.

As the Seminoles prepare for Saturday's clash with in-state rival Miami, Fisher said Cook would not take part in practices on Monday or Tuesday.

Northwestern-Michigan could be Under bettors' dream

When the Michigan Wolverines and Northwestern Wildcats square off in Ann Arbor Saturday, it will be a contest between the two top Under bets in the country.

Both the Wildcats and Wolverines are 0-5 Over/Under to begin the season and the reason for that? Well, defense of course.

Northwestern has pitched two shutouts so far (vs. Eastern Illinois, vs. Minnesota) and has given up the fewest points in the country so far (35). Right behind them is Michigan who has also blanked two opponents (vs. BYU, at Maryland) and has conceded just 38 points - 24 if those at Utah in Week 1.

The past two meetings between these two Big Ten rivals have resulted in cashed Under bets, including a 10-9 Michigan win last season.

Why wiseguys are betting these college football odds at the right time

Notre Dame takes on Navy following a loss to Clemson but has seen the triple-option before when it played Georgia Tech.

              Spread to bet now

Minnesota Golden Gophers (-3) at Purdue Boilermakers

Minnesota and Purdue played two totally different games last week. While the Golden Gophers got shutout 27-0 at Northwestern, the Boilermakers lost a close 24-21 game at home to Michigan State. Off such performances, we can expect Minnesota to have more motivation while Purdue figures to be flat.

The oddsmakers opened Minnesota as a 1.5-point favorite in this game, and early money has pushed that line up to -3. Based on my power ratings, the line is still a tad short and it wouldn't be a surprise if it goes up throughout the week. Lay the three points with Minnesota now.

              Spread to wait on

Washington State Cougars (+17) at Oregon Ducks

Oregon won 41-24 in Colorado last Saturday night, and off that win, the public may think the Ducks are back to themselves after getting embarrassed by Utah 62-20 at home in their previous game. But Oregon still has serious issues, and it can't be trusted inside this pointspread range.

Washington State comes in with a 2-2 SU record with its two losses coming by a combined 13 points. The Cougars are a scrappy team and since they possess a strong passing offense, they always have backdoor potential if needed. Wait this game out, and grab at least an extra half point on Washington State.

              Total to watch

Navy Midshipmen at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (54.5)

Notre Dame just faced a triple-option offense a few weeks ago when the Irish beat Georgia Tech 30-22. Notre Dame allowed the Yellow Jackets to score just six points in the first 59 minutes of the game before Georgia Tech miraculously scored two touchdowns in the final minute. That experience will have Notre Dame more prepared to stop Navy's triple-option offense in this game.

The total on this game opened at 55 at the majority of sports books, but it has been bet down slightly to 54.5. There's no reason to expect a high-scoring game, especially since Navy has held their four opponents to an average of just 15.0 points per game this season. This total will likely drop even lower as the week goes on, so take the Under now.

Game of the Day: Washington at USC
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Trojans welcome Steve Sarkisian's former squad Washington to town for the first time since he has taken over at USC.

Washington Huskies at Southern California Trojans (-17, 56)

Steve Sarkisian coaches against his former team for the first time on Thursday when No. 17 USC hosts Washington in Pac-12 play. Sarkisian spent five seasons as coach of the Huskies before departing after the 2013 season and the Huskies replaced him with Chris Petersen, who hotly pursued the Trojans' gig but reportedly was underwhelming during the interview process.

Petersen, who went from Boise State to Washington, is still putting his stamp on the Huskies program during his second season as coach. Freshman quarterback Jake Browning has walked on campus and thrown for 996 yards and five touchdowns in four games as Washington looks toward the future. Sarkisian's goal is reaching the Pac-12 title game and he claims there is nothing special about coaching against the Huskies for the initial time. “I respect those kids a lot," Sarkisian told reporters. "We recruited them and got them to come to Seattle with the best interests at heart to go out and be successful. It’s going to be fun to compete against them. I know they’re going to be ready to go. I wouldn’t expect anything less of them.”

                  TV:
                  9 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                  LINE HISTORY:
The line hasn't moved from its opening number of USC -17. The total also has held steady at its opening number of 56.

                  INJURY REPORT:

Washington - DB B. Baker (questionable Thursday, ankle), CB A. Joyner (out for season, knee), WR J. Ross (out for season, knee).

USC - DT A. Woods (probable Thursday, shoulder), CB K. Seymour (probable Thursday, knee), WR J. Smith (probable Thursday, personal), DT C. Pelon (questionable Thursday, ankle), G K. Rodgers (questionable Thursday, personal), WR D. Rogers (doubtful Thursday, hamstring).

                  WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a beautiful night for football at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It is expected to be a clear night with temperatures in the low 80's at gametime, with a very slight two mile per hour wind blowing towards the East endzone.

                  WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Cody Kessler has thrown for 1297 yards with 15 TDs and just one pick. He's having a Heisman caliber season, and the Trojans are still a contender after a big road win over the Sun Devils."

                  ABOUT WASHINGTON (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12):
The Huskies have been stellar on defense and lead the Pac-12 in scoring defense (15.8), total defense (321.0 yards per game) and rushing defense (104.5). Junior cornerback Kevin King has a team-high three interceptions and sophomore linebacker Azeem Victor has a team-best 38 tackles. Freshman running back Myles Gaskin (209 yards) and junior Dwayne Washington (138) split the rushing duties while Washington also leads the Huskies with 17 receptions and 223 receiving yards.

                  ABOUT USC (3-1, 1-1):
Senior quarterback Cody Kessler has been spectacular through four games by completing 73 percent of his passes for 1,297 yards, 15 touchdowns and just one interception. Freshman Ronald Jones II (242 yards) and senior Tre Madden (213) are the top two rushers while standout sophomore wideout Juju Smith-Schuster has hauled in 27 receptions for 537 yards and six touchdowns. Freshman inside linebacker Cameron Smith has a team-leading 30 tackles while junior outside linebacker Su'a Cravens has 27 tackles -- including four for losses -- and one interception.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings.
                  * Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                  * Washington is 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.
                  * Over is 4-1 in USC's last five home games.

                  CONSENSUS:
The public is almost dead split in this matchup, with 51.47 percent of wagers giving the Trojans a very slight edge.

Big profits could come from betting these NCAAF small-conference teams

The San Jose State Spartans make a major shift in competition this week, facing UNLV after going toe-to-toe with Auburn last weekend.

Team to Watch: San Jose State Spartans

This week: -2.5 at UNLV Rebels

The San Jose State Spartans will come into this one with a huge amount of confidence having put in an impressive performance in their last contest. The Spartans travelled cross country and gave the Auburn Tigers all they could handle before ultimately falling, 35-21. Even though Auburn is having a down year, it is still a team in the SEC conference which boasts bigger and stronger athletes than the conference opponents that SJSU will face this season.

UNLV is arguably the "hotter" team in this contest having won two straight, however, its 80-8 win over a lifeless Idaho State team and 23-17 victory over rival Nevada hardly constitutes tough competition. San Jose State should have a much easier time playing down to the talent level on UNLV. The fact the Spartans played a much tougher opponent last week will likely pay dividends in this contest.

Team to beware of: Air Force Falcons

This week: -24 vs. Wyoming Cowboys

There’s no doubt that the Air force Falcons will come into this contest just a little bit irritated given the way that they were utterly dominated by their military counterparts, the Navy Midshipmen. However, this is a lot of points to ask a predominately ground-based offense to cover.

The Wyoming Cowboys are winless on the season and, while that certainly shows their struggles, we also believe they can use their record as a motivating factor. The players are tired of losing and are hungry to get their first win of the season. Even if they fall short in the win column, they should put forth a solid effort to at least keep themselves within striking distance and not allow yet another blowout.

Total team: San Diego State Aztecs

This week: 47 at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

San Diego State takes a trip to the island and are coming off one of their most dominating performances in some time ,as they held the Fresno State Bulldogs to just 96 total yards of offense in their last contest. The Aztecs are known for their defensive prowess, but was torched both on the ground and through the air in their past three contests. Having such an impressive performance over an opponent will likely light a spark under these players for another quality defensive performance.

The Hawaii Warriors have been inconsistent offensively under Norm Chow and at times it’s hard to tell what to expect from this team. They did manage to put up 70 points at home this season, however, that was against UC Davis, who has nowhere near the defensive chops that the Aztecs have. Teams that travel to the island always seem to struggle offensively, but good defense can play anywhere.

LSU reopened as 16-point faves on home turf, now -19

With LSU and South Carolina agreeing to move Saturday's meeting to Baton Rouge after the Columbia area was devastated by flooding the past week, books re-opened the Tigers as 16-point favorites for the matchup.

But the spread was shortlived at that number and action had pushed the number even further.

"So we did no action all the wagers made on that game with the move re-opened the game at LSU -16 and it is now up to LSU -19 with 86 percent of that action," Michael Stewart of CarbonSports.ag tells Covers.

The announcement to move the game came Wednesday, after South Carolina had cancelled classes for the entire week, citing stress on the region’s recovering infrastructure. “The stress on law enforcement and first responders is too great,” University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides said in a release. “Moreover, we’ve had many in the Carolina family directly impacted by the flooding.”

West Virginia loses S Joseph to knee injury

West Virginia will be without one of its top players for the remainder of the season after standout safety Karl Joseph suffered a knee injury during a non-contact drill in practice on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers announced Wednesday that Joseph, a senior who was a first-team All-Big 12 player in 2014, has played his last college game.

Joseph was tied for the FBS lead in interceptions with five. Three of those came in West Virginia's season opener against Georgia Southern. He was named the Big 12 player of the week and national player of the week by the Football Writers Association of America after his performance in that game.

                      Auburn dismisses WR Williams

Auburn wide receiver D'haquille "Duke" Williams, a preseason all-SEC selection, was dismissed from the team, the school announced.

"When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement. "I gave D'haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out."

The school did not specify why Williams was dismissed.

Williams had 45 catches for 710 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games last season, but he had just 12 receptions for 147 yards and one touchdown this season.

Williams came to Auburn in January 2014 as the nation's No. 1 junior-college recruit.

He was suspended for the Outback Bowl last season and was suspended again during fall camp for an undisclosed "discipline issue."

Three sensational spot bet opportunities bettors need to know

It will be tough for Iowa to follow its Heartland Trophy win over Wisconsin in Week 6, when the Hawkeyes host the Fighting Illini as 11-point favorites.

                        Letdown spot

The Iowa Hawkeyes stunned Big Ten bettors with a huge win at Wisconsin last Saturday, snapping the Badgers’ 10-game home winning streak and also giving the Hawkeyes their first win over a ranked opponent in their last 10 tries. Iowa won a 10-6 grinder over the Badgers, taking advantage of four Wisconsin turnovers. The game was so out of hand that a 15-year-old Iowa fan got sucker punched by an older Wisconsin fan while leaving the stadium. You stay classy Madison.

It will be tough for Iowa to follow that Heartland Trophy mayhem in Week 6, when the Hawkeyes host the Fighting Illini as 11-point favorites. Illinois is coming off a win over Nebraska and isn’t the punchless program everyone thought it would be after firing Tim Beckman right before the season. The Hawkeyes went 0-3 ATS as double-digit faves last season and could be stepping into a typical letdown spot Saturday.

                        Lookahead spot

A 42-point spread can be a tough number for college football bettors to wrangle. Ole Miss is giving just that to the visiting New Mexico State Aggies this weekend, a week before a very interesting showdown with the Memphis Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial in Tennessee. Could the Rebels trim back their playbook and ease off the gas, resting starters when – not if – this Saturday’s game gets out of hand? Yeah, head coach Hugh Freeze pretty much said so this week.

Mississippi is coming off a loss to Florida as a 6.5-point road favorite in Gainesville last weekend and this non-conference tilt with the winless Aggies serves as an unofficial bye week, with the Rebels able to rest some key players, get younger guys some touches, and iron out wrinkles before taking on the Tigers. Those 42-points could be tough to tackle, especially with Ole Miss looking ahead to Memphs.

                        Schedule spot

The Minnesota Wild have high hopes for this hockey season, boasting one of the best defenses in the NHL as well as a budding star in goaltender Devan Dubnyk. But the Wild could be put to the test in the season opener Thursday when they scale the Rocky Mountains to play the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.

Colorado sits 5,280 feet above sea level and is notorious for its life-sucking thin air, at least when it comes to visiting sports franchises. Facing the Avs on the road in the very first game of the season will test Minnesota’s conditioning, which is never quite “game shape” until a couple weeks into the regular sked.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: North Carolina State at Virginia Tech
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hokies head into their meeting with North Carolina State losers of back-to-back games straight up and against the spread.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at Virginia Tech Hokies (-2, 46.5)

Virginia Tech needs a boost after two straight unexpected losses and could get a big one when they host North Carolina State on Friday night in an ACC contest. Quarterback Michael Brewer, who suffered a broken collarbone in the opener against No. 1 Ohio State, was cleared to practice Monday as the Hokies began preparing to host the Wolfpack for the first time since 2009.

Brewer, who was 11-for-16 against Ohio State before going down, likely will be a game-time decision when Virginia Tech goes for its fourth straight win in the series. N.C. State is coming off its first loss of the season -- a 20-13 defeat against Louisville at home -- and has dropped eight of its last 10 ACC road games. Wolfpack quarterback Jacoby Brissett has not thrown an interception in his last 34 quarters of action and will go against a defense that boasts 12 takeaways. The key may be who can get their ground game going, after Virginia Tech managed only nine yards rushing last week in a 17-13 loss to Pittsburgh and N.C. State had 45 in 30 carries.

                          TV:
                          8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                          LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Hokies as 1.5-point home faves, but that's moved to -2. The total opened at 51 but has come down to 46.5.

                          INJURY REPORT:

                          North Carolina State

G Alex Barr (Questionable, ankle), G Bryce Kennedy (Questionable, concussion), RB Johnny Frasier (Questionable, ankle).

                          Virginia Tech

QB Michael Brewer (Probable, shoulder), DT Corey Marshall (Questionable, hamstring), LB Sean Huelskamp (Questionable, suspension), RB Marshawn Williams (Out for season, knee), CB Kendall Fuller (Out for season, knee), RB Shai McKenzie (Out for season, knee), CB Shawn Payne (Out indefinitely, personal).

                          WEATHER:
Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s with a 61 percent chance of rain showers. Wind will blow across the field at around five miles per hour.

                          WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Virginia Tech enters this game off back-to-back SU losses as a favorite. The same situation occurred last year when Tech started the season 2-0 SU after beating Ohio State on the road. Tech then went on a 2-5 SU (1-6 ATS) slide afterwards. It will be interesting to see if the Hokies experience another mid-season slump this year... or if they can turn things around at home for this national TV Friday night game."

                          ABOUT N.C. STATE (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U):
Running back Matthew Dayes was held to 68 yards last week after producing at least 100 in the first four games this season and has registered 10 touchdowns overall. Brissett has completed 73.2 percent of his passes, including seven TD strikes, and tight end Jaylen Samuels is the top target (25 catches, 300 yards, four TDs). The Wolfpack are third in the nation in total defense (225.8 yards per game), buoyed by a strong non-league performance, but allowed 306 last week – 203 on the ground.

                          ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS, 4-1 O/U):
Brenden Motley has thrown for 861 yards and completed 57.1 percent of his passes with seven TD tosses and five interceptions since replacing Brewer. The bigger problem is the Hokies’ ground attack, which was throttled in a 17-13 loss to Pittsburgh last week with leading rusher Travon McMillian held to 14 yards. Isaiah Ford is the top receiver with 24 receptions for 382 yards (two, 21 last week), and Motley or Brewer needs better protection to find him after the Hokies surrendered seven sacks last Saturday.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 8-0 in Hokies last eight games in October.
                          * Wolfpack are 6-0 ATS in their last six road games.
                          * Under is 5-1 in Wolfpack last six vs. a team with a losing record.
                          * Hokies are 1-4 ATS in their last five games in October.

                          CONSENSUS:
Fifty-eight percent of users are backing the Hokies.

Essential Week 6 betting tips for college football's top games

The Sooners are 3-2 ATS in the previous five meetings with Texas, but the Longhorns have cashed in the past two.

New Mexico State Aggies at (13) Ole Miss Rebels (-45, 66.5)

                              * The Aggies haven’t had any problem putting up points, averaging 36 points in their past three games following a 61-13 loss at Florida to begin the season. Running back Larry Rose III (579 rushing yards, six TDs) and quarterback Tyler Rogers (966 passing yards, seven TDs, three interceptions) power the offense, and Rose is coming off a 260-yard game against New Mexico.

                              * Despite last week’s lackluster effort, the Rebels lead the SEC in scoring offense (45.8 points per game), total offense (500.4) and passing offense (327.4). Quarterback Chad Kelly is putting up huge numbers (295.6 passing yards per game, 11 TDs, four INTs), but Ole Miss might lean more on the ground game led by Jaylen Walton (292 rushing yards, three TDs) against the Aggies’ porous front.

                              (4) Baylor Bears at Kansas Jayhawks (+45, 78.5)

                              * Seth Russell threw four touchdowns and ran for two more in the 63-35 win over Texas Tech, but head coach Art Briles would like to cut down on his quarterback’s rushing attempts. “You really don't wanna run that guy a whole bunch because we're not really a running quarterback offense,” Briles told reporters. “We can be, we don't really want to be.”

                              * Starting quarterback Montrell Cozart is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury and backup Deondre Ford will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair ligaments in his thumb, leaving the job to freshman Ryan Willis. The freshman got his first significant experience in relief last week and went 8-for-16 for 100 yards in a 38-13 loss at Iowa State.

                              (9) Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns (+16.5, 59)

                              * The undefeated Sooners have won four of the last five meetings — including a 31-26 decision last year — and are heavily favored to defeat the Longhorns, who have been outscored 163-81 in their four losses — all against teams that are either ranked or were when they played — following a 50-7 setback to No. 2 TCU last week. The Sooners are 3-2 ATS in those previous five meetings but Texas has covered the last two.

                              * The Longhorns are off to their worst start since going 1-9 in 1956, but coach Charlie Strong remains optimistic. ''You have to find leadership and you've got to get them all the buy in,'' Strong told reporters. ''When you're a young team like the youth that we have right now and you don't have any leaders to step up with your older guys, then you're going to have the issues because what's happening now is most of your playmakers are the young guys.''

Maryland Terrapins at (1) Ohio State Buckeyes (-33, 54.5)

                              * Maryland was blanked 28-0 by Michigan last week and has lost its last two games by a combined 73-6 and speculation about the job security of coach Randy Edsall is on the rise. "We'll get it straightened out," Edsall told reporters. "We'll come out of it and we'll all be better for it."

                              * Junior quarterback Cardale Jones has an 8-0 record as a starter but his 2015 production hasn't been all that impressive with 867 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

Illinois Fighting Illini at (23) Iowa Hawkeyes (-11, 46)

                              * The Illini have been a pleasant surprise under interim coach Bill Cubit, winning their Big Ten opener over Nebraska to improve to 4-1 for the team’s best start since 2011. Quarterback Wes Lunt has been efficient (58.1 percent completion rate) guiding the Illini offense, and has hooked up with Geronimo Allison 32 times for 453 yards - both Big Ten-highs.

                              * Iowa is the only school in the country that has yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at (6) Clemson Tigers (-7, 54.5)

                              * The Yellow Jackets have dropped three in a row, none more discouraging than blowing a 21-point home advantage last week to North Carolina. Quarterback Justin Thomas and Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense is struggling, but aim to get back on track against a Clemson defense that allowed 437 yards last week.

                              * Deshaun Watson is having a fantastic sophomore campaign, averaging 231 yards of total offense per game, and even with last week’s late struggles the Clemson defense is 12th nationally in scoring defense at 14.8 points.

                              (5) LSU Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks (+19.5, 50)

                              * Looking for a fast start? LSU has outscored opponents 49-0 in the first quarter and 65-20 in the first half.

                              * The Gamecocks have had difficulty stopping the run, which is a major concern against Leonard Fournette. The defense has performed better over the past two games, though, holding UCF (230) and Missouri (299) under 300 total yards.

                              (16) Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers (+3, 59.5)

                              * Georgia has won the previous three meetings with Tennessee, but the Vols have cashed in those games and in seven of the past nine.

                              * The Volunteers brought high hopes of contending for the East title into 2015 but blew last-quarter leads to Oklahoma and Florida, then saw a 14-point advantage evaporate last week against Arkansas. Joshua Dobbs is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation, but the junior only rushed seven times last week.

Navy Midshipmen at (15) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-14, 56.5)

                              * Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds leads the option attack and comes in with nine rushing touchdowns to go along with a pair of passing scores. The senior ran for 183 yards in a 33-11 victory over Air Force last week and is looking for his first win over the Fighting Irish after coming up just short – 38-34 in 2013 and 49-39 in 2014 – in the last two tries.

                              * The Fighting Irish should be well-prepared for an option attack after claiming a 30-22 win over Georgia Tech in Week 3 and are not starting from scratch defensively. "We were able to work on maybe some of the nuances that you can't work on when you're just trying to figure out how to line up," Kelly told reporters of preparing this week. "So I think that there's certainly some things that we're going to have to tweak a little bit, but I can tell you that I'd much rather have already have played Georgia Tech and played an option offense than not have played any.”

                              (14) Northwestern Wildcats at (21) Michigan Wolverines (-7.5, 35)

                              * Northwestern is 5-0 for the first time since 2012 after blasting Minnesota 27-0 on Saturday. The Wildcats lead the nation in scoring defense (7 ppg) and hope to beat Michigan for the first time since Nov. 15, 2008 after some heartbreaking defeats along the way, including two of the last three meetings in overtime.

                              * The Wolverines have won four straight games, including an impressive 31-0 victory over BYU in Week 4, and are coming off a 28-0 triumph over Maryland to earn back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2000.

Arkansas Razorbacks at (10) Alabama Crimson Tide (-16.5, 48)

                              * Alex Collins carried the ball at least 26 times and ended up with at least 151 yards and one touchdown in each of the last three games. The junior is a key to coach Bret Bielema’s preferred method of ball control and strong defense, and Arkansas came up with enough on defense last week to support the running game and end a three-game slide.

                              * Alabama has taken eight straight in the series, including a 14-13 triumph on the road last season. The Tide are 5-3 ATS in those previous eight meetings.

                              (19) Oklahoma State Cowboys at West Virginia Mountaineers (-6.5, 60.5)

                              * Sophomore quarterback Mason Rudolph has not passed for fewer than 260 yards in eight career starts and threw for a career-high 437 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-34 victory over Kansas State last week.

                              * The game pits Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen, who was offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State in 2010, against his former boss in Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy with Holgorsen holding a 2-0 (SU and ATS) record against his mentor, including a 34-10 victory last season in Stillwater, Okla.

                              (24) Boise State Broncos at Colorado State Rams (+15.5, 60)

                              * Boise State's attack has flourished under freshman quarterback Brett Rypien, who became the starter when sophomore Ryan Finley broke his ankle on Sept. 18. Rypien has completed 73.9 percent of his passes for 718 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions over two-plus games.

                              * Colorado State has dropped three of its last four games and fell to Utah State last Saturday in its Mountain West opener. The Rams are adjusting to first-year coach Mike Bobo, the former offensive coordinator at Georgia the past eight seasons.

                              (12) Florida Gators at Missouri Tigers (+4.5, 39.5)

                              * Florida quarterback Will Grier threw four touchdown passes as Florida routed then-No. 5 Ole Miss 38-10 last week to start 5-0 for the first time since 2012. The Gators will test their improving offense against the Tigers, who lead the SEC in scoring defense (12 points per game) and total defense (263.6 yards).

                              * Freshman Drew Lock will start for the second straight week in place of suspended quarterback Maty Mauk after completing 21-of-28 passes with two TD strikes in a 24-10 victory over South Carolina last Saturday.

                              (2) TCU Horned Frogs at Kansas State Wildcats (+10.5, 63)

                              * The Horned Frogs, who have won 13 consecutive games dating back to last season, have scored 50 or more points and topped 600 offensive yards in each of their past four games.

                              * Kansas State has struggled to keep its quarterbacks healthy and is expecting junior Joe Hubener to start despite the fact he took a head-to-head hit in last Saturday's loss to Oklahoma State while converted senior receiver Kody Cook - the fifth-string option - is questionable after injuring his shoulder against the Cowboys.

Miami Hurricanes at (8) Florida State Seminoles (-8.5, 51)

                              * The Hurricanes, who have lost five straight to the Seminoles, are coming off their first loss of the season — a 34-23 setback at Cincinnati. Brad Kaaya had his streak of throwing a touchdown pass end at 16 games but leads all ACC quarterbacks with 1,094 yards and has thrown only four interceptions in his last 342 attempts.

                              * Florida State has outscored opponents 82-19 in the second half, including 41-0 in the third quarter.

                              (3) Michigan State Spartans at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+13.5, 54)

                              * The Spartans, who must avoid looking ahead to a showdown at Michigan next week, will try to continue their progress on the ground after recording 267 yards in a 24-21 win over Purdue last week.

                              * Rutgers, which also hosts No. 1 Ohio State on Oct. 24, rebounded from two losses to beat Kansas 27-14 at home on Sept. 26 before enjoying last weekend off. Chris Laviano has completed 72 percent of his passes for the Scarlet Knights and gets talented receiver Leonte Carroo back from suspension.

                              (22) Cal Golden Bears at (7) Utah Utes (-7.5, 62)

                              * Cal quarterback Jared Goff has two dynamic wide receivers in Kenny Lawler (eight touchdowns) and Bryce Treggs, but the team will need running backs Daniel Lasco, Khalfani Muhammad and Vic Enwere to provide balance against a stout Utah front line.

                              * Utes defensive end Hunter Dimick missed the last two games due to a knee injury but is fully healthy following last week’s bye and will be critical to Utah’s hopes of slowing down Goff, who leads the Pac-12 in touchdown passes (15) and passing yards (1,630).
