Huskers say they're ready for Wisconsin run game this time
    October 9, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska knows what's coming and believes it's ready.

The Cornhuskers knew last year, too, but definitely weren't prepared for Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon to run for an FBS-record 408 yards and four touchdowns in a demoralizing 35-point loss in Madison.

There's a new coaching staff at Nebraska, and defensive coordinator Mark Banker's unit has been among the best in the nation at stopping the run so far. These Huskers have yet to see the style of power running game Wisconsin presents, and fans still cringe when reminded of the 581 and 539 yards rushing Nebraska allowed the last two times the teams met.

Gordon has moved on to the NFL, top running back Corey Clement is still out recovering from sports hernia surgery and the Wisconsin offensive line isn't as imposing as some in the past. Alabama and Iowa beat the Badgers by all but shutting down their ground game.

The Huskers (2-3, 0-1) hope to do the same Saturday when Wisconsin (3-2, 0-1) visits in a key Big Ten West game.

''I'd say this defense is built to stop any team, but yes, I think that our defense may be especially suited for this type of offense,'' defensive end Jack Gangwish said. ''Wisconsin has a very smash-mouth approach to football. They're going to run the ball straight at you. There's not a whole lot that's really fancy about what they do.''

Taiwan Deal and Dare Ogunbowale will share the carries, and quarterback Joel Stave will use play-action to try to exploit a vulnerable Nebraska secondary.

Both teams are looking to rebound following disappointing losses. The Huskers are off to their worst start since 1959 after Illinois drove the field in the last minute to pull out a 14-13 win. Stave committed four turnovers in a 10-6 loss at home to Iowa.

''We've got to do a better job of continuing to help coach our guys and help them grow. And we get that opportunity this week, and that's what's fun - and with a group that wants to get better, a group that wants to be coached,'' first-year Badgers coach Paul Chryst said.

Some things to watch as the teams battle for the Freedom Trophy:

    RILEY-CHRYST REUNION:

Wisconsin's Chryst and Nebraska's Mike Riley have a history dating to 1991. Riley hired Chryst as an assistant on the team he coached in the old World League of American Football, and Chryst also was his aide at Oregon State and with the San Diego Chargers.

''I think one of the things that we both have in common is we respect the game and truly respect those that play it, and our job is to help them play it,'' Chryst said. ''So I don't feel like it's me against Mike.''

    D-LINE SHUFFLE:

Nebraska remains short-handed on the defensive line. Tackles Vincent Valentine and Kevin Williams have been battling injuries, tackle Kevin Maurice is out four weeks with a stress fracture and end Freedom Akinmoladun will miss two weeks with a knee injury. End Greg McMullen probably will move inside and line up alongside Maliek Collins. Gangwish and Ross Dzuris would then be the primary ends.

    WISCONSIN INJURIES:

TE Austin Traylor, who hurt an arm and shoulder late in the Iowa game, had surgery Monday and was not listed on this week's depth chart. He's the third tight end to be injured. Also, WR Alex Erickson was being treated for a concussion this week. His status was uncertain.

    DEFENSE ON A ROLL:

Since losing 35-17 to Alabama, Wisconsin has held four straight opponents to 10 points or fewer. That's the third-longest run of its kind in program history.

    NEBRASKA-WISCONSIN TIES:

Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez played linebacker for the Huskers from 1965-67 and coached high school football in Nebraska in the 1970s. Wisconsin assistants Ted Gilmore was on Nebraska's staff from 2005-10 and Joe Rudolph in 2007.

No. 8 Alabama, Arkansas trying to follow up big wins
      October 9, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Nick Saban wants his Alabama team still happy when the season's over, not just all aglow after one big win.

Another loss, after all, spoils the good mood.

The eighth-ranked Crimson Tide, coming off a redemptive rout of No. 19 Georgia, tries to keep it going Saturday night when Arkansas visits Bryant-Denny Stadium after a big win of its own.

''We are what we are as an identity only if it happens on a continuum,'' Saban said. ''You always have the next challenge. You always have the next game. You can look at teams all over the country who have big wins and then two weeks later they're not so happy again.''

Now, the question is which team will feel like celebrating Saturday night. The Tide (4-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had an emphatic answer to doubters after a blunder-filled loss to Mississippi, matching the program's largest road win over a Top 10 team with the 38-10 victory.

Sure, it had people buzzing about the Tide again but Saban vehemently proclaims that he doesn't want his team to care about what outsiders think anyway.

The Razorbacks (2-3, 1-1) took No. 9 Texas A&M to overtime before a 24-20 road win over Tennessee. They've dropped eight straight games to Alabama but fell just 14-13 last season after a pair of 52-0 thumpings.

''We're going to go down there with the attitude that we can win the game, and that's what we're going to try and do,'' said Razorbacks tailback Alex Collins, who has rushed for 150-plus yards in three straight games. ''That's what we're preparing for, and that's the attitude we'll have. We want to go down there and beat those guys in their house on their homecoming.''

      ---

Here are some things to watch in the game:

      ALLEN'S CHALLENGE:

Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen is making his fourth start against the Tide so he has a general idea of what to expect. He struggled to a combined 151 yards with four interceptions in the first two meetings but was much better last season, throwing for 246 yards. ''It doesn't matter who comes and goes,'' Allen said of Alabama defenses. ''They're going to be very disciplined on defense, they're not going to make a lot of eye violations or mistakes on `D'. We have to execute on offense. We have to do things we do well.''

      HENRY VS. COLLINS:

Collins and Alabama's Derrick Henry are having terrific seasons overshadowed by Georgia's Nick Chubb and LSU's Leonard Fournette. They're the other guys among the SEC's top four rushers. Collins has 656 yards and six touchdowns. Henry has run for 570 yards and nine touchdowns and reached the end zone in a school-record tying 10 consecutive games.

      ALABAMA'S STREAK:

Saban hasn't lost in eight meetings with the Razorbacks while at Alabama, winning by an average of 28 points before last season's close call. ''I don't think anything that has happened in the past is going to affect the outcome of this game and I think our players have to get ready to play one of their best games of the year to have success against a good team,'' Saban said.

      RUN DEFENSES:

Both running games face stiff tests. The Tide leads the SEC in run defense while Arkansas is third. The Razorbacks allowed only 90 second-half yards against Tennessee.

      BREAKOUT RECEIVERS:

Both teams have had a receiver step up after injury troubles. The Razorbacks' top three receivers have been injured, but Drew Morgan has 265 yards in the past two games to pick up the slack. Alabama freshman Calvin Ridley had 120 yards against Georgia with Robert Foster out after shoulder surgery. Ridley has the two longest catches of the season by a Tide wideout.

Syracuse takes to road, aims to improve on solid start
        October 9, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) South Florida's Willie Taggart rejects the notion that beating Syracuse would give the struggling Bulls the type of victory needed to prove they're headed in the right direction under the third-year coach.

Sure, the Orange (3-1) are off to a promising start and are members of a Power Five conference, however Taggart said that's not the only reason winning Saturday would be significant.

''I think one win right now can change a lot for our football team,'' Taggart said.

''It would be great to beat a Power Five football team, and Syracuse is a good football team,'' the coach added. ''They're not the team that they were before. They're not 3-1 for (no) reason, they're playing some good football. It's a good challenge for our guys to go beat a good, winning football team. It gives you a lot of confidence.''

It would also support Taggart's belief that he's on the verge of turning around a program that's fallen on hard times since the Bulls rose as high as No. 2 in the nation in 2007.

USF (1-3) has lost three straight to Florida State, Maryland and Memphis, falling to 7-21 in two-plus seasons under the one-time Jim Harbaugh assistant.

Taggart's players say they feel a sense of urgency to win because it's the next opportunity to stop the slide, not because they think their coach's job is in jeopardy.

''We're playing for each other,'' running back Darius Tice said, adding Taggart doesn't make the players ''feel that type of way.''

''He comes out with energy and he pushes us to come out with energy each day,'' Tice added. ''He's a great coach, a great guy. He has our back, he's always there for us, so we just go out and play for each other. We feel like that will take care of the rest.''

Syracuse is coming off a bye following a 10-point loss to LSU and is playing on the road for the first time this season. The Orange has already matched its victory total for last season, and are not strangers to USF.

The teams played eight consecutive years from 2005 to 2012 before Syracuse moved from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. USF won the first five meetings, but the Orange has won two of the last three - with both victories coming in Tampa.

''`We're going to be playing on the road for the first time and I think we'll adjust pretty well,'' receiver Steve Ishmael said.

        ---

Some things to know about the Orange and Bulls:

        WELCOME BACK:

Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey is ready to play again after sitting against LSU two weeks ago because of a head injury. Dungey stepped in for injured senior Terrel Hunt and has been a revelation. He has a 204.03 pass efficiency rating and has completed 21 of 36 passes for 428 yards and five TDs with zero interceptions and no lost fumbles. He also has rushed for 106 yards and one score on 24 carries. Also returning to the lineup is elusive H-back Ervin Philips, who has recovered from a knee injury. Philips caught two scoring passes from Dungey before he was hurt.

        RUNNIN' BULLS:

USF switched to an up tempo offense featuring spread principles, but are still a run-first team. Marlon Mack, last year's American Athletic Conference rushing leader as a freshman, teams with Tice to give the Bulls a nice one-two punch on the ground. Quarterback Quinton Flowers has run for six TDs and run for two.

        BALL SECURITY:

The Orange and Bulls are among seven FBS teams that have not lost a fumble this season.

        BOWL BOUND?

Last year Syracuse started 2-0 and finished 3-9, failing to qualify for the postseason after having won three bowl games in the previous four seasons. The meat of the Orange's schedule lies ahead with road games against Virginia, Florida State, Louisville and North Carolina State and Pittsburgh, Clemson and Boston College at home. A solid performance in a 34-24 loss two weeks ago to then-No. 8 LSU has injected a new dose of confidence in the Orange, who need three more victories for a chance at the postseason.

        HOMECOMING STRUGGLES:

USF is 9-9 all-time in homecoming games. They've lost the past five.

Mississippi State regroups, tries to build momentum vs. Troy
          October 9, 2015

Mississippi State's first five weeks of the season haven't been terrible, but also haven't gone exactly as planned.

The Bulldogs have already lost two games in the Southeastern Conference and are now a longshot to win the Western Division title. But a manageable stretch of games over the next month might allow Mississippi State to build some momentum heading into a difficult November.

Mississippi State (3-2) hosts Troy (1-3) on Saturday before another non-conference game against Louisiana Tech. Then the Bulldogs host Kentucky before a road game against Missouri.

That sounds manageable, but coach Dan Mullen believes the immediate challenge for Mississippi State is to figure out a way to play better.

''We have guys that will fight and play hard,'' Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. ''The one thing we have to learn how to do is to go expect to make plays.''

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott isn't getting the same type of hype as last season, when he emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but he's quietly having a very good season with 1,279 passing yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. He also leads the team with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

The rest of team has been hit or miss. Of particular concern is a running game that ranks just 11th out of 14 SEC teams with 155 yards per game.

''One of the things in college football that you see week-to-week is that if you don't play well you're not going to win,'' Mullen said. ''It doesn't matter if you're the No. 1 team in the country or if you haven't won a game. If you play really well, you're going to have an opportunity to win.''

          ---

Things to watch when Mississippi State hosts Troy on Saturday:

          MULLEN GOES FOR 50
          :

Seventh-year Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen will try to win the 50th game of his tenure on Saturday. Mullen has a 49-33 record with the Bulldogs and has led the program to five straight bowl games, which is a school record. Mullen would be just the third coach in school history with 50 wins, joining Allyn McKeen and Jackie Sherrill.

          PRESCOTT'S STREAK:

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown 225 consecutive passes without an interception, which is the longest current streak in the nation and the third-longest in SEC history. Prescott's streak spans five games and 21 quarters dating back to last season's Orange Bowl.

          A CHANCE TO REGROUP:

Mississippi State lost its second conference game of the year last weekend, falling 30-17 on the road against Texas A&M. The Bulldogs should now have ample opportunity to regroup, with non-conference games against Troy and Louisiana Tech before a home conference game against Kentucky.

          PLAYING WITHOUT MARKET:

Mississippi State received bad news this week when it learned that starting safety Kendrick Market would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee after suffering the injury in the second quarter of last weekend's loss to Texas A&M. Said coach Dan Mullen: ''That was probably the last play of his career for a man that's done so much. He's been an impact player in the SEC.''

          TROY LOOKING FOR OFFENSE:

Troy hired new coach Neal Brown in the offseason. The 35-year-old has an offensive background, with stints as an offensive coordinator at Troy, Texas Tech and Kentucky before returning to the Trojans. So far, the offense has been a work in progress. Troy ranks just 112th out of 127 FBS teams with 21.4 points per game.

No. 14 Ole Miss tries to build depth in game vs. NMSU
            October 9, 2015

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) It's not even halfway through the football season and No. 14 Mississippi already is a beat-up team.

Starting linebacker C.J. Johnson was the latest to join several Rebels on the sideline, including safety Tony Conner and defensive tackle Issac Gross. Johnson had surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus and is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Couple the injury news with the reality that the Rebels were embarrassed last week in a 38-10 loss to Florida and the mood has been a little apprehensive in Oxford.

Coach Hugh Freeze said now is not the time to lose faith.

''We need to circle the wagons, own what we did, own what we didn't do, and we still have a lot to play for and a long season left,'' Freeze said. ''We can't operate like the rest of the world and put our hands in the air. We have to get back to work.''

Considering all the bad news, it's probably a good thing that the Rebels' schedule is a little lighter this week. Ole Miss (4-1) is a 43 1/2-point on Saturday when it hosts New Mexico State (0-4).

Ole Miss will likely rest several of starters, including multiple offensive linemen. That should give young players the opportunity for ample playing time as the Rebels try to build depth for a difficult stretch run that includes games against Texas A&M, LSU and rival Mississippi State.

''I believe that this team will respond, no question,'' Freeze said. ''We have the ability to be one of the best teams in the country.''

            ---

Things to watch when No. 14 Mississippi hosts New Mexico State:

            HURTING REBELS:

Ole Miss has had to deal with numerous injuries over the first half of the season. The latest: Linebacker C.J. Johnson had knee surgery on Monday for a torn meniscus and is expected to miss the next four to six weeks. Other key defensive players out with injuries include safety Tony Conner, who also has a torn meniscus and is expected to miss at least a few more weeks, and Issac Gross, who is out for the season with a neck injury.

            REBOOT THE OFFENSE:

The Ole Miss offense looked like arguably the best in the country through the first month of the season, topping 70 points two times and dumping 43 points on Alabama. But the Rebels looked very ordinary in a 38-10 loss to Florida last weekend. Four turnovers certainly didn't help and the Ole Miss will be trying to clean up the mistakes and regain its form from September.

            TUNSIL WATCH:

Ole Miss starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil is expected to miss his sixth straight game on Saturday because of a continuing NCAA investigation. Rebels' coach Hugh Freeze said he hopes for some news on Tunsil's possible return in the near future. Ole Miss is struggling with its depth on the offensive line and could use Tunsil's imposing presence on the left side.

            BREAK IN THE SCHEDULE:

Ole Miss is hoping to take control of the matchup early against winless New Mexico State before a difficult four-game stretch that includes a non-conference game against much-improved Memphis and then three league games against Texas A&M, Auburn and Arkansas. The Rebels then have their bye week before finishing the season with LSU and Mississippi State.

            TRUST IN ROSE:

New Mexico State is a huge underdog in Saturday's game, but the Aggies do have one star player in Larry Rose III, who has run for 579 yards, six touchdowns and is averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

Battle of defenses: No. 13 Northwestern vs No. 18 Michigan
              October 9, 2015

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Northwestern and Michigan have made steady climbs up The Associated Press poll due to their defenses.

The 13th-ranked Wildcats have shut out two teams and are giving up a nation-low seven points a game. That has helped Northwestern equal its total number of victories in each of the previous two years. If the Wildcats win Saturday at the Big House, they will be 6-0 for the first time since 1962 when Ara Parseghian was their coach.

''Everyone's gonna give us their best shot now,'' Northwestern offensive guard Matt Frazier said. ''But we like that. We accept the challenge.''

No. 18 Michigan, meanwhile, is a win away from matching the number of victories it had last year in Brady Hoke's final season before being fired.

The Wolverines have blanked consecutive opponents, rank first in third-down defense and second in points allowed under Jim Harbaugh.

Entering the battle of stingy units, Harbaugh refused to add to the hype.

''The two defenses won't go against each other in the game,'' he deadpanned.

Michigan defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow, though, added to the anticipation.

''Our goal is to be the best defense in the country,'' he said. ''We don't shy away from talking about that.''

Here are some things to watch when the Wolverines (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) travel to play the Wolverines (4-1, 1-0):

              MEASURING STICK:

The Wildcats publicly downplayed the importance of the game with coach Pat Fitzgerald going as far as saying he didn't know what a statement game was at his weekly news conference. The winners and losers may eventually look back at the matchup as pivotal. After going 5-7 last year, Glasgow is glad to be playing in a significant game in October. ''I'm looking forward to our team being able to make a statement,'' he said.

              BAD MEMORIES:

Michigan has won four straight games in the series, including last year's 10-9 victory at Northwestern. ''We got thumped,'' Fitzgerald lamented. Frazier acknowledged his team will be a little more motivated. ''Thinking back, those losses stick out to me over the years,'' he said. ''I definitely want to get one this week, but we're just focused on going 1-0 every week.''

              MUTUAL RESPECT:

Harbaugh and Fitzgerald played, about a decade apart, for the teams they're coaching and they've become relatively fond of each other. ''I was a fan growing up,'' the 40-year-old Fitzgerald said. ''Got to know him a bit personally when he was at Stanford and we'd see each other recruiting. ... You've got to tip your hat to the success he's had.'' The 51-year-old Harbaugh went as far as inviting Fitzgerald to come to Ann Arbor last summer to speak at a football camp for high school players. ''He did a tremendous job talking to the campers, sharing football lessons and life lessons,'' Harbaugh recalled.

              RUNNING GAME:

Both teams may struggle to run the ball, but the team that does it best will likely win. Northwestern's Justin Jackson has run for 100-plus yards in three straight weeks, four times this season and 10 during his short career. Jackson, though, ran for a career-low 35 yards and a career-low 2.1 yards per attempt last year against Michigan. The Wolverines are hoping running back De'Veon Smith can play after missing last week's win at Maryland with an injured right ankle. If Smith has to sit again, the Wolverines will probably lean on Drake Johnson, who has beat out Ty Isaac to be the team's No. 2 running back, after having major knee surgery twice.

              COMEBACK PLAYER:

Frazier, who started against Minnesota, may be the happiest player on the field after a long list of setbacks that started with surgery on his right ankle in January. ''Three days after that surgery, I had to have emergency surgery on my spine,'' he recalled. ''So then I started recovering from that, getting incorporated back into workouts a bit. I tore my left pec. And then I think maybe a week or two after that, I was hospitalized. I had an infection in my pelvis, and it went septic, it got in my bloodstream. I was hospitalized for 10 days, three or four days in ICU.''

Things to Watch: Unexpected matchups and rivalries
                October 9, 2015

Showdowns between surprising teams in the Pac-12 and Big Ten highlight Week 6 of the college football season.

There's also a rivalry game in the ACC, another in the SEC and a big mismatch in the Big 12.

It should be an action-packed weekend, so here's a few things to watch:

                ---

                UNEXPECTED SHOWDOWNS

The only games pairing Top 25 teams this week features teams that weren't projected to be this good, much less facing each other in pivotal games.

In the Pac-12, No. 5 Utah will host No. 23 California in what could end up being the game that decides the North Division. Not too many people could have seen that one coming.

The Utes (4-0) drew a bit of attention by beating Michigan in Jim Harbaugh's debut as coach, but a lopsided victory over Oregon in Eugene two weeks ago burst them onto the national scene. Utah moved up to No. 5 for the third time as a program and the earliest it has in a season. The Utes also received seven first-place votes in this week's poll and have now become a trendy pick to reach the College Football Playoff.

California (5-0) has quickly turned things around under coach Sonny Dykes, in position to match their win total of the past two seasons combined if they can beat Utah. Bears quarterback Jared Goff has put himself at the top of this year's quarterback crop with a strong start.

The Big Ten marquee game features No. 13 Northwestern against Harbaugh's No. 18 Wolverines. Michigan was picked to finish fourth in the East in the preseason poll and Northwestern fifth in the West, so this is another few-saw-this-coming game.

The Wildcats (5-0) have a stingy defense that's allowed a nation-low 7.0 points per game after pitching consecutive shutouts. Michigan (4-1) has been pretty good on that side of the ball, too, holding opponents scoreless in 14 of the past 15 quarters and is second nationally in total defense, allowing 184 yards per game.

We're going out on a limb and saying there probably won't be a lot of scoring in the Big House.

                ---

                SEMINOLES AND HURRICANES

Florida State has controlled its in-state rivalry over Miami with five straight wins, longest in the series since the Seminoles won seven straight from 1963-72.

The 60th version of the rivalry has big stakes on both sides.

The Seminoles have had their struggles offensively this season, yet are 4-0 and up to No. 12 in The AP Top 25. Hurricanes fans have become restless with coach Al Golden, who is 16-18 after October begins.

A win for the Seminoles keeps their undefeated season rolling. A Hurricanes win would go a long way toward squelching the criticism.

                ---

                EVENLY MATCHED

As rivalries go, the one between Georgia and Tennessee couldn't be any more even: 21-21-2.

One catch, though. The Bulldogs have won five straight in the series.

No. 19 Georgia (4-1, 2-1 SEC) will be looking to bounce back when these teams meet Saturday in Knoxville after losing to No. 8 Alabama last week.

The Volunteers (2-3, 0-2) are just looking for a way to finish off games. Ranked No. 25 to start the season, Tennessee has lost three of four games after leading by 13 points or more.

                ---

                UNEVENLY MATCHED

A rundown of the odds for this weekend's game shows No. 3 Baylor has one of the biggest spreads as 44 1/2-point favorites over Kansas.

We're not going to question the oddsmakers because they clearly know what they're doing, but it's going to take a lot for the Jayhawks to keep it that close.

The Bears (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) lead the nation in total offense and scoring. The Jayhawks (0-4, 0-1) have yet to play a close game, losing by at least 27 points every time, and are 121st in total defense.

Baylor could actually be up by more than 44 points by halftime in this one.

Top defenses, QB questions for Boston College, Wake Forest
                  October 9, 2015

BOSTON (AP) Boston College coach Steve Addazio wants to talk about the Wake Forest defense, not his own.

The Eagles have the No. 1 defense in the nation, but Addazio is worried about the Demon Deacons unit that held Florida State to 24 points last week - one week after BC held the Seminoles to 14.

''They had an outstanding defense last year. I remember telling everybody that ... and then we went down there and (they) were like, `Wow. They really have a good defense,''' Addazio said of the 2014 game that the Eagles won 23-17. ''They still are really good on defense.''

Wake Forest (2-3, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) is 20th in the FBS in net yards allowed. But the Eagles (3-2, 0-2) lead the nation in the category; those stats are surely padded by wins over FCS teams Maine and Howard, but the 217 yards the Seminoles gained against BC were the fewest for FSU since 2011.

''You know they're going to be physical. You know they're going to be tough, and possessions are going to be at a premium because they like to run the ball and control the clock,'' Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. ''You know we're going to have to take advantage of it every time we have the football. If we have a lot of three-and-outs, this will not be a good football game.''

Here are some other things to look for when the Demon Deacons visit Chestnut Hill:

                  SIGNAL-CALLERS:

BC lost starting quarterback Darius Wade after he broke his ankle against Florida State on Sept. 18. John Wolford started the season for Wake Forest but aggravated an ankle injury against Army, skipped one game and then came off the bench and threw one pass against Florida State last week

''He's starting to practice a little bit, and he looks like he's starting to feel better,'' Clawson said this week.

Freshman Kendall Hinton started against Indiana and the Seminoles, both losses. In those two games, he was 46 for 88 for 460 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

                  YOUTH:

Whatever problems the Demon Deacons have, Clawson hopes they are temporary.

''Every game, we're starting six freshmen, and in some cases seven freshmen,'' he said. ''We've just got to keep this thing on an upward trajectory and find a way to win close games against good football teams. We're improving in every way except the win column right now, and ultimately that's what it comes down to.''

                  IMPROVED OFFENSE:

Wake Forest has rushed for seven touchdowns in five games. The Demon Deacons finished 2014 with four TDs on the ground. They've also thrown for more yards than their opponent in every game. The offensive line should get a boost with the return of left guard Ryan Anderson, who had been suspended for five games for a team rules violation.

                  SPECIAL TEAMS:

Boston College missed eight extra points last year - one in the Pinstripe Bowl, which the Eagles lost 31-30 to Penn State. This year, BC has made all 16 of its PATs, but there are still problems in the kicking game.

Addazio has tried only four field goals, and Alex Howell and Colton Lichtenberg are each 1 for 2; the longest field goal made by a BC kicker is 31 yards. Addazio said Howell is hurt so he will be limited to punting. That means Lichtenberg, a freshman, will do the kicking - for now.

''Right now that we are going with Colton. Is that a permanent thing? Nothing's permanent,'' the coach said. ''You've got to live with growing pains with these guys and make the determination of whether they are growing pains and will they get there. Those are all the things. You don't base it off of one kick.''

Penn State looking for more big plays
                    October 9, 2015

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) If the only way Penn State can move the ball is with big plays, so be it.

An all-or-nothing approach has paid off so far for the Nittany Lions who have just one touchdown drive over four minutes this season. All nine of Penn State's touchdown drives of 50 yards or more have been aided by ''explosive'' plays - runs of 15 yards or more and passes of 20 yard or more - and coach James Franklin would like to see more of them against Indiana at Beaver Stadium.

Especially considering the Hoosiers are giving up over 502 yards per game and allowed 11 such plays - four for touchdowns - in a loss to No. 1 Ohio State last week.

''You talk about being more methodical, I think we have to do the opposite,'' Franklin said. ''I think we need to be more aggressive at times.''

When Penn State's done so, it's paid off.

Since John Donovan took over play calling last season, nearly all of the Nittany Lions' offensive success has hinged on their ability to execute explosive plays. In 199 possessions since the start of last season, Penn State has scored just 26 touchdowns when the offense has had to drive more than 55 yards, with 35 explosive plays powering those drives. A slight majority of them have come when quarterback Christian Hackenberg has thrown downfield, something he hopes to do more of as sophomores Saeed Blacknall and Chris Godwin have emerged as strong deep threats.

''I think the potential we have as an offense to make big plays is extremely high,'' Godwin said. ''We have a ton of weapons.''

But they're not taking up a ton of time, something the Hoosiers excel at.

Indiana is holding onto the ball for nearly five minutes longer than its opponents. Considering Penn State defenders said last week they were wearing down as Army racked up 31:19 of possession time, Penn State may have to find more balance to keep its defense rested if it can't dictate the pace with explosive plays early.

''I think if we ask (defensive coordinator Bob Shoop), he'd love us to take a 13-play, 8-minute minute drive and score a touchdown,'' Ricky Rahne, the team's passing game coordinator, said. ''But I think he'll take the 80-yarder for a touchdown as well.''

                    BANGED UP BACKS:

Both teams are dealing with injuries in their backfields. Although true freshman Saquon Barkley practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday, Franklin would not say for sure if he would play. Penn State's Akeel Lynch (knee) is not expected to play and Indiana's Jordan Howard is questionable with an ankle injury.

                    SUDFELD OR DIAMONT?

The Nittany Lions prepared all week to face both pocket-passer Nate Sudfeld and running threat Zander Diamont with true freshman Tommy Stevens simulating both Hoosier quarterbacks on the scout team. Sudfeld picked Penn State apart for 321 yards in the Hoosiers only win two years ago.

                    HELP ON D:

If practice reps were any indication, a few Penn State players will return on Saturday. Junior linebacker Brandon Bell and sophomore safety Marcus Allen both took first-team reps and would give Shoop's unit, which has struggled to tackle in the second level without them, a boost.

                    RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY:

Penn State's playing surface, usually praised by the Nittany Lions and opponents alike as one of college football's best, has been ravaged through four-straight home games - mostly because of heavy rains in three of those games. The field crew was busy last week against Army repairing divots through TV timeouts so a partly cloudy forecast with highs near 60 degrees will be welcomed.

Essential Week 6 betting tips for college football's top games

The Sooners are 3-2 ATS in the previous five meetings with Texas, but the Longhorns have cashed in the past two.

New Mexico State Aggies at (13) Ole Miss Rebels (-45, 66.5)

                        * The Aggies haven’t had any problem putting up points, averaging 36 points in their past three games following a 61-13 loss at Florida to begin the season. Running back Larry Rose III (579 rushing yards, six TDs) and quarterback Tyler Rogers (966 passing yards, seven TDs, three interceptions) power the offense, and Rose is coming off a 260-yard game against New Mexico.

                        * Despite last week’s lackluster effort, the Rebels lead the SEC in scoring offense (45.8 points per game), total offense (500.4) and passing offense (327.4). Quarterback Chad Kelly is putting up huge numbers (295.6 passing yards per game, 11 TDs, four INTs), but Ole Miss might lean more on the ground game led by Jaylen Walton (292 rushing yards, three TDs) against the Aggies’ porous front.

                        (4) Baylor Bears at Kansas Jayhawks (+45, 78.5)

                        * Seth Russell threw four touchdowns and ran for two more in the 63-35 win over Texas Tech, but head coach Art Briles would like to cut down on his quarterback’s rushing attempts. “You really don't wanna run that guy a whole bunch because we're not really a running quarterback offense,” Briles told reporters. “We can be, we don't really want to be.”

                        * Starting quarterback Montrell Cozart is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury and backup Deondre Ford will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair ligaments in his thumb, leaving the job to freshman Ryan Willis. The freshman got his first significant experience in relief last week and went 8-for-16 for 100 yards in a 38-13 loss at Iowa State.

                        (9) Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns (+16.5, 59)

                        * The undefeated Sooners have won four of the last five meetings — including a 31-26 decision last year — and are heavily favored to defeat the Longhorns, who have been outscored 163-81 in their four losses — all against teams that are either ranked or were when they played — following a 50-7 setback to No. 2 TCU last week. The Sooners are 3-2 ATS in those previous five meetings but Texas has covered the last two.

                        * The Longhorns are off to their worst start since going 1-9 in 1956, but coach Charlie Strong remains optimistic. ''You have to find leadership and you've got to get them all the buy in,'' Strong told reporters. ''When you're a young team like the youth that we have right now and you don't have any leaders to step up with your older guys, then you're going to have the issues because what's happening now is most of your playmakers are the young guys.''

Maryland Terrapins at (1) Ohio State Buckeyes (-33, 54.5)

                        * Maryland was blanked 28-0 by Michigan last week and has lost its last two games by a combined 73-6 and speculation about the job security of coach Randy Edsall is on the rise. "We'll get it straightened out," Edsall told reporters. "We'll come out of it and we'll all be better for it."

                        * Junior quarterback Cardale Jones has an 8-0 record as a starter but his 2015 production hasn't been all that impressive with 867 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

Illinois Fighting Illini at (23) Iowa Hawkeyes (-11, 46)

                        * The Illini have been a pleasant surprise under interim coach Bill Cubit, winning their Big Ten opener over Nebraska to improve to 4-1 for the team’s best start since 2011. Quarterback Wes Lunt has been efficient (58.1 percent completion rate) guiding the Illini offense, and has hooked up with Geronimo Allison 32 times for 453 yards - both Big Ten-highs.

                        * Iowa is the only school in the country that has yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at (6) Clemson Tigers (-7, 54.5)

                        * The Yellow Jackets have dropped three in a row, none more discouraging than blowing a 21-point home advantage last week to North Carolina. Quarterback Justin Thomas and Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense is struggling, but aim to get back on track against a Clemson defense that allowed 437 yards last week.

                        * Deshaun Watson is having a fantastic sophomore campaign, averaging 231 yards of total offense per game, and even with last week’s late struggles the Clemson defense is 12th nationally in scoring defense at 14.8 points.

                        (5) LSU Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks (+19.5, 50)

                        * Looking for a fast start? LSU has outscored opponents 49-0 in the first quarter and 65-20 in the first half.

                        * The Gamecocks have had difficulty stopping the run, which is a major concern against Leonard Fournette. The defense has performed better over the past two games, though, holding UCF (230) and Missouri (299) under 300 total yards.

                        (16) Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers (+3, 59.5)

                        * Georgia has won the previous three meetings with Tennessee, but the Vols have cashed in those games and in seven of the past nine.

                        * The Volunteers brought high hopes of contending for the East title into 2015 but blew last-quarter leads to Oklahoma and Florida, then saw a 14-point advantage evaporate last week against Arkansas. Joshua Dobbs is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation, but the junior only rushed seven times last week.

Navy Midshipmen at (15) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-14, 56.5)

                        * Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds leads the option attack and comes in with nine rushing touchdowns to go along with a pair of passing scores. The senior ran for 183 yards in a 33-11 victory over Air Force last week and is looking for his first win over the Fighting Irish after coming up just short – 38-34 in 2013 and 49-39 in 2014 – in the last two tries.

                        * The Fighting Irish should be well-prepared for an option attack after claiming a 30-22 win over Georgia Tech in Week 3 and are not starting from scratch defensively. "We were able to work on maybe some of the nuances that you can't work on when you're just trying to figure out how to line up," Kelly told reporters of preparing this week. "So I think that there's certainly some things that we're going to have to tweak a little bit, but I can tell you that I'd much rather have already have played Georgia Tech and played an option offense than not have played any.”

                        (14) Northwestern Wildcats at (21) Michigan Wolverines (-7.5, 35)

                        * Northwestern is 5-0 for the first time since 2012 after blasting Minnesota 27-0 on Saturday. The Wildcats lead the nation in scoring defense (7 ppg) and hope to beat Michigan for the first time since Nov. 15, 2008 after some heartbreaking defeats along the way, including two of the last three meetings in overtime.

                        * The Wolverines have won four straight games, including an impressive 31-0 victory over BYU in Week 4, and are coming off a 28-0 triumph over Maryland to earn back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2000.

Arkansas Razorbacks at (10) Alabama Crimson Tide (-16.5, 48)

                        * Alex Collins carried the ball at least 26 times and ended up with at least 151 yards and one touchdown in each of the last three games. The junior is a key to coach Bret Bielema’s preferred method of ball control and strong defense, and Arkansas came up with enough on defense last week to support the running game and end a three-game slide.

                        * Alabama has taken eight straight in the series, including a 14-13 triumph on the road last season. The Tide are 5-3 ATS in those previous eight meetings.

                        (19) Oklahoma State Cowboys at West Virginia Mountaineers (-6.5, 60.5)

                        * Sophomore quarterback Mason Rudolph has not passed for fewer than 260 yards in eight career starts and threw for a career-high 437 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-34 victory over Kansas State last week.

                        * The game pits Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen, who was offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State in 2010, against his former boss in Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy with Holgorsen holding a 2-0 (SU and ATS) record against his mentor, including a 34-10 victory last season in Stillwater, Okla.

                        (24) Boise State Broncos at Colorado State Rams (+15.5, 60)

                        * Boise State's attack has flourished under freshman quarterback Brett Rypien, who became the starter when sophomore Ryan Finley broke his ankle on Sept. 18. Rypien has completed 73.9 percent of his passes for 718 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions over two-plus games.

                        * Colorado State has dropped three of its last four games and fell to Utah State last Saturday in its Mountain West opener. The Rams are adjusting to first-year coach Mike Bobo, the former offensive coordinator at Georgia the past eight seasons.

                        (12) Florida Gators at Missouri Tigers (+4.5, 39.5)

                        * Florida quarterback Will Grier threw four touchdown passes as Florida routed then-No. 5 Ole Miss 38-10 last week to start 5-0 for the first time since 2012. The Gators will test their improving offense against the Tigers, who lead the SEC in scoring defense (12 points per game) and total defense (263.6 yards).

                        * Freshman Drew Lock will start for the second straight week in place of suspended quarterback Maty Mauk after completing 21-of-28 passes with two TD strikes in a 24-10 victory over South Carolina last Saturday.

                        (2) TCU Horned Frogs at Kansas State Wildcats (+10.5, 63)

                        * The Horned Frogs, who have won 13 consecutive games dating back to last season, have scored 50 or more points and topped 600 offensive yards in each of their past four games.

                        * Kansas State has struggled to keep its quarterbacks healthy and is expecting junior Joe Hubener to start despite the fact he took a head-to-head hit in last Saturday's loss to Oklahoma State while converted senior receiver Kody Cook - the fifth-string option - is questionable after injuring his shoulder against the Cowboys.

Miami Hurricanes at (8) Florida State Seminoles (-8.5, 51)

                        * The Hurricanes, who have lost five straight to the Seminoles, are coming off their first loss of the season — a 34-23 setback at Cincinnati. Brad Kaaya had his streak of throwing a touchdown pass end at 16 games but leads all ACC quarterbacks with 1,094 yards and has thrown only four interceptions in his last 342 attempts.

                        * Florida State has outscored opponents 82-19 in the second half, including 41-0 in the third quarter.

                        (3) Michigan State Spartans at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+13.5, 54)

                        * The Spartans, who must avoid looking ahead to a showdown at Michigan next week, will try to continue their progress on the ground after recording 267 yards in a 24-21 win over Purdue last week.

                        * Rutgers, which also hosts No. 1 Ohio State on Oct. 24, rebounded from two losses to beat Kansas 27-14 at home on Sept. 26 before enjoying last weekend off. Chris Laviano has completed 72 percent of his passes for the Scarlet Knights and gets talented receiver Leonte Carroo back from suspension.

                        (22) Cal Golden Bears at (7) Utah Utes (-7.5, 62)

                        * Cal quarterback Jared Goff has two dynamic wide receivers in Kenny Lawler (eight touchdowns) and Bryce Treggs, but the team will need running backs Daniel Lasco, Khalfani Muhammad and Vic Enwere to provide balance against a stout Utah front line.

                        * Utes defensive end Hunter Dimick missed the last two games due to a knee injury but is fully healthy following last week’s bye and will be critical to Utah’s hopes of slowing down Goff, who leads the Pac-12 in touchdown passes (15) and passing yards (1,630).

Northwestern Wildcats at Michigan Wolverines (-7.5, 34)

No. 21 Michigan looks to continue its resurgence under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh when it hosts 14th-ranked Northwestern on Saturday. The Wolverines have won four straight games, including an impressive 31-0 victory over BYU in Week 4, and are coming off a 28-0 triumph over Maryland to earn back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2000.

Michigan is ranked second nationally in total defense (184 ypg) and has outscored its opponents 119-7 in its last 15 quarters as it strives to beat the Wildcats for the fifth consecutive time. Northwestern is 5-0 for the first time since 2012 after blasting Minnesota 27-0 on Saturday. The Wildcats lead the nation in scoring defense (7 ppg) and hope to beat Michigan for the first time since Nov. 15, 2008 after some heartbreaking defeats along the way, including two of the last three meetings in overtime. "This will be the best team we've played all year and you compound that with being on the road and this will be a great challenge for our team," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald told reporters. "Coach Harbaugh and his staff have done a terrific job in their first year."

                                POWER RANKINGS: Northwestern (-16.5) + Michigan (-13) + home field (-3.0) = Northwestern -0.5

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Wildcats defense is the real deal, and they recorded their second shutout of the season in a 27-0 home win over Minnesota last week. The Wolverines have won four straight, recording back to back shutouts over BYU and Maryland. They didn't have their leading rusher De'Veon Smith against the Terps, and he's questionable to play this week against Northwestern."

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Joe P. is loving the dog in this one for a change. The line opened at 9.5 and quickly made its way down to 7.5. The bets are 3-1 on Northwestern 7.5, and the money is 2-1. I imagine things will level out a bit, and the line will be pretty stable where it is."

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS, 0-5 O/U): Sophomore running back Justin Jackson rushed for 120 yards in the win over Minnesota to notch his 10th career 100-yard rushing game. Linebacker Anthony Walker, who leads the team with 44 tackles, has been a revelation for the Wildcats as he's recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and also returned a fumble for a touchdown to put the game out of reach against the Golden Gophers. Northwestern has held four opponents to 10 points or fewer this season and is fifth nationally in total defense, giving up 247.4 yards per game.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS, 0-5 O/U): De'Veon Smith, who leads the Wolverines with 331 rushing yards and five total touchdowns, missed the win over Maryland with a foot injury but is expected to play on Saturday. Senior defensive end Mario Ojemudia was having one of the finest games of his career before he suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the second half against the Terrapins that will effectively end his collegiate career. Senior quarterback Jake Rudock continued his struggles as he was limited to 16-of-32 passing for 180 yards and threw his sixth interception of the season.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                                * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
                                * Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
