Northwestern is one of two new entries into the Top 25. After back-to-back disappointing seasons, Pat Fitzgerald's team dominated Stanford in a 16-6 home win as a double-digit home underdog.
With the loss, Stanford fell from 12th to No. 21 and will have to run the table to have a shot at making the College Football Playoff. Another team that fell a bunch is Michigan State, which failed to cover in a 37-24 win at Western Michigan. The Spartans moved from No. 6 to No. 13, but they can easily jump back into the Top 10 with a home win Saturday over No. 9 Oregon.
Alabama jumped from fifth to No. 2 after spanking Wisconsin, 35-17. The Crimson Tide catapulted ahead of TCU and Auburn, who moved down one and two spots, respectively. The Horned Frogs and Tigers both failed to cover the spread in wins at Minnesota and vs. Louisville. Bobby Petrino's squad posted a backdoor cover by rallying from 21 down early in the fourth quarter of a 31-24 setback at the Ga. Dome in Atlanta. The Cardinals, who go from unranked to No. 23, lost to Auburn despite out-gaining it in the yardage department. They couldn't overcome a pair of costly first-half turnovers that resulted in 14 points for Auburn.
Boise State fell out of the rankings even though it survived an upset bid from Washington and its former coach Chris Petersen on the smurf turf. The Broncos, who were previously No. 17, beat the Cougars by a 16-13 count but were unimpressive in doing so.
Ohio State did nothing to threaten its standing at No. 1 in our rankings. Playing without All-American DE Joey Bosa, the Buckeyes exploded in the second half en route to a 42-24 win at Va. Tech. The Hokies rallied from a 14-0 deficit to take a 17-14 lead at intermission. However, when starting QB Michael Brewer was forced out of the game early in the third quarter, Frank Beamer's team couldn't generate any offense. On the flip side, Braxton Miller was busy showing his skills at his new position. He had a TD run and a TD catch as the Buckeyes hooked up their betting supporters as 14-point road 'chalk.'
