NCAAF Opening Line Report: Big spreads for college football's biggest rivalries

This week’s college football slate makes a complete 180-degree turn from last week, which was loaded with rather meaningless matchups. Thanksgiving weekend brings a buffet of big contests that will go a long way toward determining which teams make the inaugural four-team playoff.

And of course, the SEC will have the main course, with two key contests, headlined by Alabama playing host to archrival Auburn in the Iron Bowl. The Crimson Tide (10-1 SU, 3-8 ATS) are coming off a 48-14 rout of FCS foe Western Carolina, though they fell well short of covering as massive 50.5-point favorites, leaving them tied with several teams for the second-worst ATS record in the Nation.

Auburn (8-3 SU, 4-7 ATS), which had its playoff hopes sunk in by back-to-back losses to Texas A&M and Georgia, also had a lightweight foe last weekend, dropping Samford 31-7 as an even bigger chalk than ‘Bama – 59.5 points.

“We opened Alabama -9.5 and there hasn’t been too much movement,” Scott Kaminsky of the TheGreek.com, tells Covers. “In a game like this, it doesn’t matter what the records are. Each team wants to go away with a victory. But I don’t think this one goes above -9.5. I’ll take a stab and say it will stay in single digits.”

In last year’s Iron Bowl, Auburn won 34-28 by returning a missed field goal the length of the field for a touchdown on the last play of the game.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (-1) at Mississippi Rebels

Mississippi State has just one loss, and a respectable one at that, falling at Alabama two weekends ago. The Bulldogs (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) still have a very good chance to reach the four-team playoff and are coming off a 51-0 shellacking of Vanderbilt laying 29.5 points at home.

Meanwhile, Mississippi (8-3, 6-4-1 ATS) can only play spoiler in the annual Egg Bowl. The Rebels were coming off a bye before traveling to Arkansas on Saturday, yet got blasted by the Razorbacks 30-0 as a 3-point fave.

“Mississippi State opened as a 1-point road favorite,” says Kaminsky. “Ole Miss had a horrible game last week. They looked so good to start out but just bit the bullet, and lost three of their last four.”

Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes (-20)

No matter the situation, this game is big every year. But it’s far more important for Ohio State (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS), which has a shot at the playoff. The Buckeyes struggled to put away Indiana on Saturday, winning 42-27 while failing to cash as 36.5-point favorites.

Michigan (5-6 SU, 4-7 ATS) is playing out the string under likely-to-be-fired coach Brady Hoke. The Wolverines were 6-point home chalk against Maryland, but lost outright 23-16.

“I can’t see anyway (Michigan) wins this game,” says Kaminsky, who opened Ohio State as a 20-point favorite. “They’re playing a team that is so much better than them. So many times, it’s the last game of the season and last game for the seniors or the coach. But there’s one thing you always have to bring to the table and that’s talent. And (Michigan) doesn’t have a lot of talent. If they cover the spread, they will have done well. Not in their eyes, but they would’ve done well.”

Oregon Ducks (-20) at Oregon State Beavers

A look at the records would have one think that Oregon (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) should roll, but this rivalry game is often tight. Last year, also in Corvallis, the Ducks held on for a 36-35 win giving 24 points.

Oregon is coming off a 44-10 home win and cover against Colorado laying 32.5 points, while the Beavers (5-6 SU, 3-8 ATS) – coming off an upset of Arizona State – got bounced at Washington 37-13 catching 6.5 points.

“This is the same scenario as the Michigan-Ohio State game. Almost the same spread,” says Kaminsky, who opened Oregon -21 and moved to -20 with early money the underdog. “Oregon just beats up on people and they’ll beat up on Oregon State. The Beavers want to beat Oregon bad, but they just don’t have the talent.”

Ohio Bobcats vs. Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (+2.5, OFF)

Tuesday night MACtion brings a rivalry game as Miami (Ohio) takes on the Ohio Bobcats in a conference game that is extremely important for Ohio as they look to get to six wins and an outside chance of bowl eligibility while Miami look to get a win over the in-state rivals as a way of getting a moral victory on what has been a long season for the RedHawks who are 2-9 going into Tuesday's clash.

Ohio did their best to stay in the MAC East race for as long as possible, but at 3-4 the dream of an improbable title game berth was dashed as Bowling Green has clinched their spot in the game with a 5-2 record. However they will have an outside chance at getting a bowl bid if they can beat the RedHawks in a game that the Bobcats won easily last season in a 41-16 blowout.

The RedHawks will remember that blowout on their home turf as they host the Bobcats for a second straight year, but five straight losses will present a momentum challenge for Miami (Ohio). If they are to upset the Bobcats goal of reaching the magic number of six points, they will need to turn things around in their 2014 finale in a big way.

LINE HISTORY: The line has fluctuated between 1.5 and 2 depending on the book with the O/U off the board at the time of writing.

INJURY REPORT: Ohio: WR Brendan Cope, S Nathan Carpenter, TE Brennan Borland, and WR Papi White are the questionables for the Bobcats. Miami-Ohio: LB Kent Kern is the only questionable player on the Redhawks injury report going into Tuesday.

WEATHER REPORT: The forecast is calling for a chilly, cloudy evening in Oxford with temperatures of 30 degrees Fahrenheit expected at kickoff.

ABOUT OHIO: (5-6, 5-6 ATS, 3-8 O/U): The Bobcats are very much a home team, which makes things tricky for Ohio backers looking to take advantage of the slim -2 line for the 5-6 team Tuesday. Ohio are just 1-4 ATS away from home, and are just 2-3 which is why they are still chasing a sixth win while being out of the MAC East race going into the final week. A low scoring team at 20.2 points per game, the Bobcats lack of ability in putting the ball into the endzone is a big reason why they are 8-3 on Unders in 2014.

Running back AJ Oullette is the player to watch on offense for the Bobcats as he leads Ohio in touchdowns with nine, rushing for 689 yards which is less impressive, but if Ohio are going to win they will need Oullette to find the endzone on a few occasions to get the rivalry game win.

ABOUT MIAMI (OHIO) (2-9, 7-4 ATS, 5-6 O/U): The RedHawks come into their final game of the season as a team that covers often despite being one of the worst teams in the NCAA in the wins department. Most of Miami (Ohio)'s covers have came as underdogs of 10 or more, but they have got the job done as five point faves against Kent State and will look to do so as less than a field goal underdogs in their home finale against the Bobcats.

Hendrix has matched a magic number himself already, reaching 3000 yards going into the regular season finale at 3062 passing yards. If the RedHawks are to upset their Ohio rivals they will need a big game from their quarterback.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at USC Trojans (-7)

Southern Cal opened briefly as a 6.5-point home favorite versus Notre Dame, and money quickly came in on the Trojans making them 7-point chalk in all locations. I expect more USC money to come in and push this line up higher, so bettors should lay the key number now before the line ticks up.

Notre Dame comes in off a close 31-28 home loss to Louisville. That was its third straight loss and its fourth loss over the past five games. Southern Cal also comes in off a loss to rival UCLA, getting blown out 38-20. Southern Cal is playing at home, so it will have an easier time getting up for this game, especially since the Trojans have revenge on their minds after losing 14-10 at Notre Dame last season. Lay the points with the Trojans now.

Michigan State Spartans at Penn State Nittany Lions (+13.5)

Michigan State was initially a 13-point road favorite at Penn State and money came in quickly on the Spartans, pushing the line higher. I anticipate this line going up further, especially after Michigan State won 45-3 last week while Penn State lost 16-14.

Penn State has a solid defense that only allows 16.2 points per game on 4.1 yards per play, so giving them close to two touchdowns presents solid value. Michigan State’s biggest wins this season have come against some really bad teams. Penn State took Ohio State to double overtime, so the Nittany Lions are capable of competing. Wait this game out and take Penn State at +14 points or more later in the week.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Georgia Bulldogs (64)

This rivalry game has seen Georgia win five consecutive meetings. The Bulldogs appear to be in line for a sixth straight win as they are currently 13-point favorites over Georgia Tech. This series has been high-scoring lately, with the past five games averaging 61 points.

Georgia Tech and Georgia are both playing at an extremely slow pace this season. The Yellow Jackets rank 122nd in pace while the Bulldogs rank just 102nd in pace. However, the teams are averaging a lot of points per game: Georgia Tech (37.8) and Georgia (43.3). The two defenses have gone unnoticed. Georgia Tech allows just 24.1 points per game and Georgia allows only 20.5 points per game. Based on recent history, this total may be inflated a few points too high.

Fifth-ranked TCU and host Texas roll into their Thanksgiving Day meeting on win streaks. While the Longhorns are playing well and already bowl-eligible, the Horned Frogs have bigger goals in their sights. TCU is in striking distance of a College Football Playoff berth and can claim at least a share of its first Big 12 Conference title with two more wins.

ABOUT TCU (9-1 SU, 8-2 ATS, 7-3 O/U): The Horned Frogs' improvement in total yards (plus-196.8) and points (plus-20.8) lead the nation and are on pace to set a Big 12 record while the offense can also set school marks for points, first downs, passing yards and total offense in a single season. Boykin (3,021 passing yards, 24 touchdowns; 548 rushing yards, seven scores) ranks third nationally in total offense. Josh Doctson leads TCU, winner of five straight, with 43 catches for 693 yards and seven TDs and Kolby Listenbee has 33 catches for 606 yards and three scores.

ABOUT TEXAS (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS, 3-8 O/U): Tyrone Swoopes has grown into a solid leader of the Texas offense, completing 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,152 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Running backs Malcolm Brown and Johnathan Gray have combined for 1,281 yards and 13 scores while John Harris (59 catches for 976 yards and seven TDs) and Jaxon Shipley (58 catches, 571 yards, one score) lead the receiving corps. The Longhorn defense - led by linebacker Jordan Hicks' 136 tackles - has allowed just 5-of-30 third-down conversions in the past two games.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

Team to watch: Colorado State Rams (10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS)

This week: -7 at Air Force

Colorado State running back Dee Hart was named Mountain West Player of the Week Monday. And why not? He rushed 20 times for 230 yards and five touchdowns while also catching two passes for 42 yards and another score in a 58-20 blowout of New Mexico. Hart has three consecutive 100-yard performances and found the end zone 11 times (10 on the ground) in those three games.

In last year’s head-to-head meeting at Colorado State, the Rams racked up 629 yards of offense and hammered Air Force 58-13. The Falcons were five minutes away from being shut out for the first time since 1992 before scoring two otherwise meaningless touchdowns.

Colorado State is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 road games. Air Force is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 conference outings and 2-7 ATS in its last nine against opponents with winning records.

Team to beware: Ball State Cardinals (4-7 SU, 4-7 ATS)

This week: +9.5 at Bowling Green

Almost every team is banged up at this point of the season, but perhaps no unit has had it worse than Ball State’s defense. Five opening-game starters on the defensive side of the ball have been lost for the season, plus five backups. The Cardinals also suspended lineman Blake Dueitt for a violation of team rules earlier this month.

While the defense has been in flux the entire season, the most important position on the offensive side of the ball has also been a carousel. Ozzie Mann started BSU’s first five games before getting benched. Jack Milas took the reins for the past six contests but went down with a wrist injury against Eastern Washington last week.

Head coach Pete Lembo said earlier this week that Milas is doubtful and he’s preparing to start Mann, who has attempted only seven passes (all last week vs. Eastern Washington) since Oct. 4.

Total team: Old Dominion Monarchs (5-6 SU, 6-4-1 O/U)

This week: 68 at Florida Atlantic

Old Dominion head coach Bobby Wilder said earlier this week that running backs Ray Lawry (sore neck) and Gerard Johnson (sprained ankle) are likely to play against Florida Atlantic Saturday. Both Lawry (734 yards, 15 TDs) and Johnson (493 yards, one TD) left last week’s game vs. Louisiana Tech in the first half. Despite seeing their top two rushers go down, the Monarchs still won 30-27 in overtime.

That was the first time ODU’s defense had held an opponent to fewer than 30 points since Sept. 13. As for Florida Atlantic’s defense, Lawry and Johnson get to face a unit that gives up 224.8 rushing yards per game.

The Over is 7-0 in Old Dominion’s last seven road games and 4-1 in its last five overall. The Over is 4-0 in Florida Atlantic’s last four at home.

Iowa won 38-17 at Nebraska LY, its first win in last five seiries games; Cornhuskers won 13-7/42-7 in last two visits here. Nebraska allowed 87 points in losing last two games after an 8-1 start; they're 3-1 vs spread in games with single digit spread, 2-2 SU on road. Iowa lost three of last five games, losing 26-24 at home to Wisconsin last week. Home teams are 29-26 vs spread in Big 14 games this season.

Arkansas blanked LSU/Ole Miss at home last two weeks; they're bowl eligible now, but are 1-3 on road, with only win 49-28 at Texas Tech in mid-September. Missouri might be quietest 9-2 team in country, taking last five games, three on road, holding four of five opponents under 300 total yards. Both of Mizzou's losses are at home, one was to Indiana, so that could explain lack of hype around them.

Stanford won its last six games with UCLA, five by 8+ points, covering five of six; Cardinal won 35-17/35-0 in last two visits here, but lost three of last four road games, winning rivalry game at Cal six days ago, losing other three by 3-16-29 points. UCLA won last five games, beating USC in its rivalry game Saturday; QB Hundley said he's going to go to NFL next season. Bruins covered last three games after a 1-7 start vs spread.

Underdogs are 7-2-1 vs spread in last ten Arizona-ASU games, 6-2 last eight played here. Sun Devils won 41-34/58-21 last two years; they are 5-2 in last seven visits to Tucson. 9-2 Arizona has five wins by seven or less points; they're 5-1 at home, losing to USC; underdogs covered four of their last five at home. ASU allowed 32.3 ppg in its last three games, after giving up 12 ppg in three before that; they're 4-1 SU on road.

10-1 Colorado State won last nine games, scoring 47.5 ppg in last four; Rams lost seven of last eight games with Air Force, losing last five here, four by 21+ points- favorites covered five of last six in series. Air Force lost at San Diego State last week but is 4-0 at home, winning SU as home underdogs vs Boise State/Navy. Mountain West home dogs are just 5-15 vs spread this season. Rams' only loss was 37-24 at Boise Sept. 6th.
