        Thursday's Diamond Notes
        May 5, 2016

Hottest team: Mariners (8-2 last 10)
Seattle rallied from an 8-4 deficit to stun Oakland on Wednesday, 9-8 to finish off a three-game sweep of the A’s. The Mariners improved to 11-4 away from Safeco Field this season, while winning seven of their last nine games against AL West foes. Seattle travels to Houston to begin a four-game series, as the M’s grabbed two of three from the Astros in late April at home. The Mariners have fared well in series openers recently by posting a 5-1 record in the last six opportunities, as southpaw Wade Miley takes the mound coming off a shutout of the Royals in his past start.

Coldest team: Diamondbacks (3-9 last 12)
There’s not much bite to Arizona of late, as the D-backs try to avoid their second consecutive sweep tonight at Miami. Arizona has scored just 12 runs during its current five-game losing streak, while allowing at least four runs in nine of the past 10 contests. Things change quickly in this league, as Arizona is two weeks removed from pulling off a four-game road sweep of San Francisco, but has won only three games in the last four series.

Hottest pitcher: Jacob DeGrom, Mets (3-0, 1.02 ERA)
New York ventures out west for upcoming series against San Diego, Los Angeles, and Colorado, coming off a 7-2 homestand. DeGrom has allowed two earned runs in three starts this season, but gave up three runs (zero earned) in six innings of work against the Mets in his past outing, a 6-5 home victory. New York has won 12 of DeGrom’s last 14 starts away from Citi Field since last June, as the right-hander tossed eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball in a 7-0 shutout of the Padres on June 1, 2015 at Petco Park.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Cain, Giants (0-3, 7.00 ERA)
In 2012, Cain put together a 16-5 record to help lead San Francisco to a World Series title. Since then, Cain has won a total of 12 decisions in the last four seasons, while failing to record a victory in five decisions this season. Cain has allowed a total of 10 earned runs in his past two outings in one-run defeats to the Marlins and Mets, while San Francisco is 2-5 in his past seven starts at AT&T Park.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (8-1 at home)

Chicago remains atop the AL Central in spite of Wednesday’s loss to Boston, but the White Sox continue to cash ‘unders’ at U.S. Cellular Field. The White Sox finished ‘under’ the total for the second straight game against the Red Sox in last night’s 5-2 loss, as Chicago has scored four runs or fewer in seven of the past nine home contests. Tonight, Chicago faces Boston southpaw Henry Owens, as the White Sox are 4-0-1 to the ‘under’ this season against left-handed starting pitchers.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (6-1-1 last eight at home)
Cincinnati’s offense has woken up recently by putting up 14 runs in the three-game series against San Francisco, including seven runs in Wednesday’s victory. The Reds’ bullpen has been anything but sharp this season, while Cincinnati’s pitching has given up at least eight runs four times in the last seven home contests. The Reds begin a four-game series with the Brewers, as five of their six meetings to close out 2015 finished ‘over’ the total.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Cubs
These two division leaders start a crucial four-game set at Wrigley Field as Washington continues a 10-game road trip. The Nationals have won five of the first six contests, including taking two of three from the Royals in interleague action. Washington owns a 4-1 record in road series openers, as Joe Ross takes the mound going for his fourth victory of the season. The Cubs became the first team to reach 20 wins in Wednesday’s 6-2 triumph at Pittsburgh to pull off the three-game road sweep. The Cubs are 2-2 in Kyle Hendricks’ four starts, as Chicago beat Washington in his two outings last season.

        Betcha didn’t know:
Since losing to Toronto on opening day in 2015, the Yankees are 10-4 in Masahiro Tanaka’s last 14 starts against AL East opponents. In this span, New York has won four of five road games against division foes, but Tanaka never faced the Orioles at Camden Yards. However, Tanaka split a pair of starts against Baltimore last season at home, striking out 17 batters in 15.2 innings of work.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-185) at Padres

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+115) at Indians

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (-150 to -165) vs. Rangers

          Underachieving AL Pitchers
          May 4, 2016

Heading into the second month of the season there are several prominent pitchers off to disappointing starts. Here are a few American League starters that could be due for a turnaround in the coming weeks and may provide some value in some of their upcoming starts.

Mike Fiers - Houston Astros: The entire Astros team has had a very disappointing start to the season, considered by most to be a serious contender, but sitting with one of the worst records in baseball through the first month. Fiers joined the Astros last August and promptly threw a no-hitter in his fourth appearance with the team, but he pitched just one inning in the postseason and wasn’t a lock to earn a rotation spot this season. With a 4.97 ERA through five starts he has work to do but there is a lot to like about his profile.

Fiers has always produced great strikeout numbers and in five starts in 2016 he has posted 22 strikeouts against just three walks. He has allowed 34 hits in 29 innings, including seven home runs. The home run and hit rates seem likely to climb downward with more innings under his belt and despite good strikeout numbers so far this season, he is well short of the nearly 9.00 strikeout per nine innings rate he had last season over 30 starts. Houston’s relief pitching and defense should be better than they have been so far this season and the schedule over the next several weeks looks reasonable for Houston and Fiers to show improvement.

Matt Moore - Tampa Bay Rays: Moore has spent plenty of time on lists like this as a breakthrough candidate, but injuries and underperforming have been common themes since a tantalizing start to his career in 2011. Moore has 37 strikeouts in just over 36 innings pitching this season, but he has just one win in six starts and his ERA is approaching 5.00. He can’t seem to shake the occasional awful outing as the early May outing vs. the Dodgers shows with seven runs allowed in a 10-5 loss. He has had some bad luck this season with a very low rate of stranding runners on base and six home runs allowed in six starts.

Five of his six starts have been at home this season and for his career he has often had more success on the road with a lower career ERA and far fewer home runs allowed as he could see better results and also value in the upcoming schedule that should feature more road outings. Moore may never become the Cy Young contender many envisioned, but he looks healthy this season and with a great defense behind him and a Rays squad that is rarely overvalued there will be some good opportunities to support Moore in the weeks ahead. Moore will remain a candidate for a big strikeout night against many lineups that struggle against left-handed pitching.

Kendall Graveman - Oakland Athletics: Graveman had amazing numbers in spring training before the 2015 season which led Oakland to start him early last season. He didn’t prove ready and a mediocre start again in 2016 may be a bit concerning as well. Graveman has looked the part this season with 25 strikeouts in fewer than 29 innings and an xFIP nearly a full run lower than his mediocre 4.40 ERA through five starts. One bad outing in Detroit vs. one of the AL’s best lineups skews the numbers as in three of his five starts he allowed four or fewer hits. His control has been sound with just eight walks allowed and he has been a little unlucky to already have allowed five home runs.

Graveman gets ground balls at a strong rate and Oakland’s bullpen has been shored up after the disastrous results the Athletics had from relievers last season which should allow Graveman’s numbers to improve and more leads to be held in 2016. Oakland has looked like a team that will remain in the AL West mix most of the season and Graveman will offer much better value than the more heralded starters on the staff like Sonny Gray or Rich Hill.

Michael Pineda - New York Yankees:
2016 isn’t going well for the Yankees and Michael Pineda has really struggled with a 6.33 ERA through five starts. Pineda’s results have been puzzling as his xFIP is a very respectable 3.66 and he has 30 strikeouts in 27 innings as he is still inducing swings and misses at a great rate. His control has also been polished compared with some erratic command early in his career, but he has allowed a great deal of hits and home runs. Surprisingly he has made strong starts at Toronto and at Boston, but has had a pair of rough home outings including one against a marginal Tampa Bay lineup. He currently owns a .359 BABIP which is certain to climb downward as the innings add up and this is a Yankees team that looks likely to dig its way out of an early season hole. There may be rare underdog pricing on Pineda and the Yankees in the coming weeks and he is certainly a better pitcher than his April numbers show.

          AL Cy Young Winners:
Dallas Keuchel, Corey Kluber, and David Price have won three of the last four AL Cy Young awards, but all three have struggled in 2016. Kluber and Price both have typically had very poor early season track records and figure to turn things around as usual. Keuchel and the entire Astros team have been off to a tough start as well and should see a turnaround. Ultimately the prices will remain high on these big name starters but chalk players may start to catch improved value in the weeks ahead. The career track records and the advanced data suggest that all are pitching better than the conventional numbers currently display.

LEADING OFF: DeGrom looks for 4-0 start at San Diego
            May 5, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

            DEGROMINATOR

Jacob deGrom, who carries a 3-0 record and 1.02 ERA into his start at San Diego, often has no-hit stuff. So Mets manager Terry Collins realizes he could find himself in a similar situation to Miami's Don Mattingly and the Dodgers' Dave Roberts, who each has removed a young pitcher in the middle of a no-hit bid because of a high pitch count this season. ''There's a big picture involved here,'' Collins said Wednesday. ''The big picture right now with us, with the expectations that are with this club, is to make sure they stay healthy.''

            REST STOP

The Chicago Cubs open a four-game series against NL East-leading Washington at Wrigley Field with Kyle Hendricks (1-2) pitching on eight days' rest against Joe Ross (3-0). The Cubs are a major league-best 20-6.

            TURNAROUND TIME?

San Francisco's Matt Cain takes an 0-3 record and a 7.00 ERA into his start against the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a homestand for the Giants.

            FIRING BLANKS

Seattle left-hander Wade Miley (2-2, 5.06 ERA), coming off his first career shutout in a five-hitter against Kansas City, starts for the Mariners at the Houston Astros.

                  Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some college football pointspreads for this fall, from the South Point casino:

                  -- Oct 15: Alabama (-3.5) @ Tennessee

                  -- Oct 20: BYU @ Boie State (-11.5)

                  -- Oct 29: Clemson (-1) @ Florida State

                  -- Nov 5: TCU @ Baylor (-7.5)

                  -- Nov 12: Stanford @ Oregon (-1.5)

                  -- Nov 26: Michigan @ Ohio State (-6.5)

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

                  13) Raptors 116, Heat 89-- Toronto is in NBA's Final Four for first time.

                  12) I've always wondered what the story was behind Russell Wilson transferring from NC State to Wisconsin, before his senior year, and the Wolfpack seemingly not caring if he left or not. Now Russell Wilson says coach Tom O'Brien basically fired him and told him he had no future in football. Curious to see what O'Brin has to say.

                  11) A's 7, Rays 6-- Danny Valencia homered three times, including the game-winner in the 9th inning, as Oakland salvaged a lousy road trip by going 2-1 in St Pete.

                  10) 15 baseball games Sunday; game-winning run scored in 7th inning or later in 11 of the 15 games. Pretty good day at the ballpark.

                  9) Rangers 7, Blue Jays 6-- Big-league brawl in this game, an offshoot of the tensions between these clubs in last year's playoffs. This was an actual fight, not the normal pushing/pulling baseball scuffle. Umps worked hard to keep the peace.

Matt Bush drilled Jose Bautista right before the brawl started; Bautista was smart enough not to go after Bush, who recently spent 3.5 years in jail. Don't want to be picking fights with guys who have done hard time.

                  8) Tom Dolan came up with a great stat Sunday: Lenny Dykstra had 81 HRs in 4,552 regular season career ABs. 10 HRs in 112 postseason ABs. That is a HR every 56.2 ABs in regular season games, one every 11.2 in postseason games.

                  7) Red Sox have scored in first inning in 12 of their 22 home games.

                  6) Rockies 4, Mets 3-- New Yorkers get swept in Denver.

                  5) Odd timing by MLB announcing Jose Reyes' suspension with New York media is in Denver for the weekend; then the Bronx Bombers brought up catching prospect Gary Sanchez the same day. There aren't many coincidences in this world........could the Bombers be interested in acquiring Reyes?

                  4) Why run differential is an overrated stat: Phillies are 22-16, but 14-3 in one-run games; they've got a -30 run differential but would be in the playoffs if they started today (they don't). They're maxing out on the talent they have, but wins are the only stat that truly matters and Philly has a lot of them.

                  3) Red Sox have scored 229 runs, 50 more than any other AL team.

                  2) If the baseball playoffs started today:
                  AL: Orioles-White Sox-Rangers. Wild Card: Boston-Seattle
                  NL: Nationals-Cubs-Giants. Wild Card: Phillies-Mets

                  1) Heading back from vacation this weekend on the Jersey shore; a tremendous place, lot of good places to eat, lot of good people, made some new friends. Walking on the beach is highly underrated.

                              Monday's Diamond Notes
                              May 15, 2016

Hottest team: Yankees (7-3 last 10)
New York is still sitting in last place of the AL East in spite of a 7-3 homestand. The Yankees outlasted the White Sox on Sunday, 7-5 to grab two of three from the AL Central leaders. New York’s offense woke up at home by scoring at least six runs in five of those victories, while the ‘over’ cashed seven times in the past 10 games. The Yankees travel to Arizona for their first game against an NL opponent, as right-hander Chad Green makes his Major League debut for New York on the mound.

Coldest team: Tigers (2-11 last 13)
Detroit avoided the sweep at Baltimore on Sunday with a 6-5 victory, but the Tigers finished its Beltway road trip against the Nationals and Orioles at 2-5. The Tigers have played 12 of their last 15 games away from Comerica Park as the next nine games will take place in the Motor City against the Twins, Rays, and Phillies. Jordan Zimmermann began the season at 5-0 for Detroit, but lost his last two starts to the Rangers and Nationals. In both of those outings, Zimmermann was opposed by Cole Hamels and Max Scherzer, as the Tigers’ ace is opposed by Minnesota rookie Jose Berrios in Monday’s series opener.

Hottest pitcher: J.A. Happ, Blue Jays (5-0, 2.05 ERA)
The Toronto southpaw has put together seven quality starts this season, while coming with one out of a complete game shutout in his last outing at San Francisco. In all three home victories for Happ, the Blue Jays have scored 29 runs, while Toronto is hosting Tampa Bay for the first time this season after the first seven meetings took place at Tropicana Field. The two no-decisions for Happ this season came against the Rays, both Toronto losses as the Jays’ bullpen gave up a lead in each of those defeats.

Coldest pitcher: Cody Anderson, Indians (0-3, 7.31 ERA)
Anderson makes his first start since a May 7 home loss to the Royals. The right-hander is winless in five starts this season, while allowing four earned runs or more in each of his past five starts. Cleveland won five of six matchups with Cincinnati last season, while the Indians have won four consecutive home series openers, which bodes well for the struggling Anderson.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (4-1-1 last six at home)
Philadelphia allowed its most runs in the last 13 games in a 9-4 home defeat to Cincinnati on Sunday. The Phillies eclipsed the ‘over’ at home for the first time in the past six games, while snapping a six-game winning streak at Citizens Bank Park (all wins by one run each). In the previous five home victories, the Phillies allowed three runs or less, going 4-0-1 to the ‘under’ prior to Cincinnati’s blowout on Sunday. Jerad Eickhoff takes the mound for the Phillies against the Marlins, as Philadelphia owns a 5-1 mark to the ‘under’ in his previous six outings.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (7-0 last seven)
Boston’s offense is coming off an incredible homestand by plating 73 runs in seven games, while going ‘over’ the total in each contest. The Red Sox have finished ‘under’ the total in four of the past six games away from Fenway Park as they travel to Kansas City to begin a three-game series. The Royals were riding an 8-1 mark to the ‘over’ prior to three consecutive ‘unders’ cashed in this past weekend’s series against the Braves. In seven meetings last season between the Red Sox and Royals, the ‘over’ finished 5-1-1.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Dodgers

The first edition of the Freeway Series takes place at Chavez Ravine as the Angels look to stay on fire. Following an 0-6 homestand against the Rays and Cardinals, the Halos bounced back in a big way by sweeping the AL West-leading Mariners at Safeco Field, capped off by a victory over Felix Hernandez on Sunday. The Dodgers captured five of six matchups from their Southern California counterparts last season, including a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium. Dodgers’ right-hander Kenta Maeda has struggled of late by going 0-2 in his last three starts, while allowing 10 earned runs and 15 hits in this span. Matt Shoemaker has failed to win in his last four outings for the Angels, while failing to last past the fourth innings in three straight starts.

                              Betcha didn’t know:
Oakland returns home after rallying past Tampa Bay on Sunday to host Texas. The Athletics own a 1-4 record in home series openers, compared to a 5-2 mark in Game 1’s of a road series. Derek Holland gets the ball for Texas, as the Rangers are 3-1 in his last four starts at the Coliseum, but Texas has compiled a 1-5 record in his past six outings on the road since September 2015.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-180) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Rays (+115) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Red Sox (-105 to -110) at Royals

LEADING OFF: Rangers, Blue Jays await penalties after fight
                                May 16, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                AFTER THE FIGHT

One day after their wild brawl that featured Texas second baseman Rougned Odor punching Toronto slugger Jose Bautista in the jaw, the Rangers and Blue Jays go their separate ways while awaiting possible suspensions from Major League Baseball. Texas opens a three-game series at Oakland, with Derek Holland coming off two terrible outings. Toronto returns home to play Tampa Bay as J.A. Happ (5-0, 2.05 ERA) tries to win his eighth straight decision dating to last season.

                                NEIGHBORHOOD RIVALRIES

Local bragging rights are on the line in a pair of interleague series: Kenta Maeda and the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Angels in the Freeway Series, hours after Cincinnati visits Cleveland in the battle of Ohio.

                                ROLLIN' RED SOX

Boston's relentless lineup begins a three-game series in Kansas City against the defending World Series champions. The Red Sox are coming off a 6-1 homestand when they reached double digits in runs five times and scored 73 in all. Rick Porcello (6-1, 3.11 ERA) starts the opener against Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura (3-2, 4.62). Porcello has pitched at least six innings in 15 straight starts, the longest active streak in the majors.

                                STARTS ON TOP

The surprising Phillies are a game behind the Nationals for the NL East lead and one of the big keys has been leadoff man Odubel Herrera. The former Rule 5 draft pick has become a walk machine, ranking third in the majors with a .448 on-base percentage and already eclipsing his total from last season with 29 free passes. Philadelphia opens a series against Miami.

                                PITCHING IN

Williams Perez tries to keep up an impressive run by Atlanta's rotation of late - Braves starters have a 2.85 ERA over the past 14 games. Perez (1-0, 3.54) is a recent addition to a group that includes youngsters Julio Teheran, Matt Wisler, Mike Foltynewicz and Aaron Blair. Despite their efforts, Atlanta is 4-10 in those games and 9-27 overall. Perez faces Jonathon Niese and the Pirates.
