MLB betting cheat sheet: AL Least?

It'll be a battle for the basement in The Bronx this week as the Toronto Blue Jays roll into town fresh off winning three out of four in Minnesota.

        0 for 6

Six times division rivals San Diego and San Francisco have met this year. All six times the latter has won. The most recent series was in San Diego and saw the Padres score just one run in all three games. This week, the teams meet at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Giants had to play Sunday Night, but the Padres went 17 innings against the Dodgers (and lost), so gone is any advantage there for the road team. Plus, the Giants are a hot team right now as they’ve won 10 of their last 11. At least the Padres will avoid Madison Bumgarner in this series (he pitched Sunday night).

        No Home Field Advantage Here

Six times division rivals Oakland and Seattle have played this year. All six times the home team has lost. Ironically, the A’s were just swept at home by the Yankees over the weekend while the Mariners swept a series in Cincinnati. Thus, I suppose you could say then that the M’s are unfortunate hosts to start the week. They are just 8-10 at Safeco Field for the season and hitting .218 here as a team. But aside from the sweep earlier this season, the Athletics are by no means a dominant road team. They’re being outscored by 1.5 runs per game overall despite a .500 record. One break for the A’s this week is they won’t have to face Felix Hernandez.

        AL Least?

For most of this season, the Yankees have occupied the basement in the American League East. But after five straight wins, the last four coming in Oakland, they now find themselves in third. Toronto, even though they won Sunday, has fallen into last. But they still have the better run differential (+2 compared to -19) compared to their Pinstriped rivals and they’re another team where the road has been kinder than home. So, I would not be the least bit surprised if they end up winning this series in the Bronx this week. They did take two of three from New York earlier this year at home.

        Hitting Notes

        * It’s a tough break for Tampa Bay losing Kevin Kiermaier from their lineup. Not only was the Gold Glove outfielder batting .313 over a nine-game stretch before breaking two bones in his left hand Saturday, he’s also a career .424 hitter against this week’s opponent, Miami.

        * The White Sox cooled off considerably over the past week, losing six of eight games. Part of that is owed to some terrible hitting with runners in scoring position (1 for 23 against the Royals). However, there is at least one hitter in the lineup poised to possibly break out this week against Cleveland. That would be Jose Abreu, who has hit .440 his last seven games against the Indians.

        Pitching Notes

        * Washington just took two of three from the Mets last week, on the road. Now they get to host their main rival, trotting out Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg for the first two games. Gonzalez always seems to excel against division opponents (1.38 ERA last 15 starts) and has done quite well for himself overall this season (allowed 1 ER or less in six of eight starts). He’ll be a sizable favorite Monday over Bartolo Colon.

        * If you’ve been following this column the last couple of weeks, then you know I’m at a loss for words over the Phillies’ surprising start. But I will certainly give a nod to starter Vince Velasquez, who is striking out nearly 11 batters per nine innings. In fact, in half of his eight starts, the 23-year old hasn’t given any runs. He’ll be a slight favorite, on the road, against Detroit Monday night as the Tigers will counter with the winless Mike Pelfrey (6.37 ERA, 1.829 WHIP).

        Totals Trend

The Under was a perfect 3-0 in the first Kansas City-Minnesota series of 2016 and that’s the way the total has generally gone in this AL Central rivalry. Since the start of last season, the Under is 15-4-3 in all Royals-Twins games. The two play a three-game set in the Twin Cities this week. All three games in the Royals’ previous series (against Chicago) also went Under by the way.

        Injury Notes

        * Miggy Cabrera left the Tigers' game Sunday with a leg injury and is listed as questionable for Monday against Philly.

        * Royals left fielder Alex Gordon was forced from Sunday's game after a collision with a teammate and he is listed as questionable Monday against the Twins.

        * Mike Trout left the Angels' game Sunday with an ankle injury, but he is expected to play Monday against the Rangers.

        * Cubs' Jason Heyward is still recovering from a crash into the outfield fence in San Francisco and is listed as doubtful Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

        * Giants' outfielder Hunter Pence is listed as questionable to return Monday against the Padres. Pence has missed San Francisco's last two games with a tweaked hamstring.

        Weather Notes

        * Could be a dicey evening in D.C. where the Nationals are scheduled to host the New York Mets. 75 percent chance of rain, high humidity and thunderstorms all over the area. The total for tonight is set at 7.5.

        * There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 50 percent chance of rain in Miami tonight where the Marlins will host the state-rival Tampa Bay Rays. The total for tonight is set at 7.5.

        * Minnesota for the Twins vs. Kansas City Royals will be another fun place to be tonight. 70 percent chance of rain, 75 percent humidity and a chance of thunderstorms all evening. There will also be a 10-15 mph wind blowing out to left field.

BALTIMORE (AP) Matt Wieters hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Jason Grilli in the eighth inning, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

The Orioles pulled within three games of the first-place Blue Jays, who had won four in a row.

Michael Saunders tied it at 3 with a two-run homer against Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez in the seventh.

Jonathan Schoop walked with two outs in the Baltimore eighth and Wieters followed with a drive to right off Grilli (4-2) for his 12th homer of the season.

Brad Brach (8-2) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Zach Britton got his league-leading 39th save.

            METS 7, MARLINS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Curtis Granderson came off the bench and homered twice, powering the Mets to the victory.

Asdrubal Cabrera extended his recent tear at the plate, hitting a two-run homer in his return to the lineup after missing one start due to a sore left knee. Rookie right-hander Seth Lugo (2-2) pitched six effective innings and Jeurys Familia earned his major league-leading 43rd save as the Mets won for the eighth time in 10 games.

By taking the first two games of the four-game series, New York (68-64) moved ahead of slumping Miami for second place in the NL East.

Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have dropped four straight and six of eight overall. Tom Koehler (9-10) got the loss.

            NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 11 in eight innings, helping Washington to the road win.

Scherzer (15-7) allowed two runs and three hits. Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 37th save.

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff (9-13), who had walked just six batters in his last eight starts, issued three walks and yielded five hits and three runs through six innings.

Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Philadelphia, which has dropped six of eight to fall 12 games below .500.

            CUBS 3, PIRATES 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks threw seven dominant innings to lower the majors' best ERA to 2.09 and Anthony Rizzo homered in the Cubs' 21st victory in August.

Hendricks (13-7) allowed three hits and walked one. Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Aroldis Chapman finished the four-hitter for his 31st save as the Cubs improved to 21-6 this month, one win shy of the best August in franchise history set in 1932.

Rizzo belted a two-run homer off Chad Kuhl (3-2) in the first and Miguel Montero added an RBI single as the Cubs improved to 84-47.

Kuhl allowed four hits in five innings as the Pirates lost their second straight after winning four in a row.

            RANGERS 8, MARINERS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor hit a game-ending two-run homer, sending the AL-best Rangers to the victory.

Odor's 25th homer was a drive to the hill in center field on a 2-2 pitch from Edwin Diaz (0-3), who had converted his first 11 save chances of the season.

Adrian Beltre also homered for the Rangers, who won their fourth straight game and have a 10 1/2-game lead over third-place Seattle in the AL West. Houston remained 8 1/2 games back after winning earlier Tuesday against Oakland.

Matt Bush (6-2), who yielded a go-ahead sacrifice fly to Robinson Cano in the eighth, came back for the ninth to finish the game.

            INDIANS 5, TWINS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and Cleveland extended Minnesota's losing streak to 12 games.

Lindor's double off Alex Wimmers (0-1) snapped a 4-4 tie and helped the Indians maintain their lead over second-place Detroit in the AL Central.

Rajai Davis hit a three-run homer and Jason Kipnis added a solo shot for Cleveland, which trailed 4-1 in the second after the Twins knocked around Josh Tomlin. Dan Otero (4-1) pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings, Bryan Shaw worked out of a jam in the seventh and Andrew Miller got five outs for his third save since joining Cleveland.

Minnesota's current slide is the third longest in club history. The Twins lost 13 straight in 1961 and a team-record 14 consecutive games in 1982.

            TIGERS 8, WHITE SOX 4

DETROIT (AP) - Ian Kinsler homered and drove in four runs, helping Detroit rally for the win.

Kinsler came into the game hitting .085 (4 for 47) in his last 13 games, but he hit a two-run homer in the fifth and added a two-run single in Detroit's four-run sixth inning.

JaCoby Jones had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers in his major league debut. Bruce Rondon (5-2) picked up the win in relief of Daniel Norris, who allowed three runs in five innings.

Todd Frazier homered for Chicago. Matt Albers (2-6) got the loss.

            CARDINALS 2, BREWERS 1, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Zach Duke stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the 10th after Randal Grichuk hit an RBI single in the top half of the inning, lifting St. Louis to the road win.

Seung Hwan Oh (4-2) pitched out of a jam in the ninth to get the win. Duke got his first save with the Cardinals by striking out pinch-hitter Manny Pina after Matt Bowman walked three batters.

The Cardinals' Jhonny Peralta led off the 10th with a single off Corey Knebel (0-2) and moved to third on Yadier Molina's ground-rule double. Jeremy Hazelbaker, who ran for Peralta, scored the winning run on Grichuk's flare to right.

St. Louis' Adam Wainwright and Milwaukee's Wily Peralta dueled for seven innings, leaving a 1-1 game for the bullpens.

            ASTROS 3, ATHLETICS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Collin McHugh threw six scoreless innings for Houston, and Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis homered.

Rasmus put Houston up 1-0 with a homer in the second inning in his first at-bat since returning from the 15-day disabled list. Rasmus went on the DL on Aug. 5 with a cyst in his right ear.

Gattis hit a solo homer in the seventh to make it 3-0.

McHugh (9-10) allowed four hits and struck out five. Ken Giles pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Houston remained two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Oakland's Kendall Graveman (10-9) allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings.

            RAYS 4, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Evan Longoria broke a tie with a solo homer in the eighth inning, clearing Fenway Park's ''Green Monster'' and rallying Tampa Bay to the victory.

Tampa Bay's Luke Maile hit a two-run drive with two outs in the seventh for his second career homer. Enny Romero (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win and Alex Colome got three outs for his 29th save.

Hanley Ramirez hit his 18th homer and drove in two runs for Boston. Clay Buchholz (5-10) took the loss, pitching the eighth and allowing Longoria's 31st homer.

            BRAVES 7, PADRES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Teheran won for the first time in 10 starts, and Braves rookie Dansby Swanson drove in three runs.

Teheran began the night with the lowest run support in the major leagues, but the two-time All-Star used a rare offensive outburst by Atlanta to earn his first home victory since last Oct. 2, a span of 14 starts.

Oswaldo Arcia homered for San Diego. Edwin Jackson (3-5) was charged with five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Teheran (4-9) allowed two runs and struck out eight in seven innings.

              Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

              — Since 2013, New Mexico is 14-6-1 vs spread coming off a loss.

              — East Carolina is 9-18 vs spread in its last 27 games as a favorite.

              — UConn covered 11 of its last 15 road games.

              — Since ’07, Texas Tech is 24-10-1 vs spread in games where road team is favored.

              — Since 2011, Arizona State is 7-13 vs spread in non-conference games.

              — Last three years, Nebraska is 8-14 vs spread at home.

Due to forecasts of severe weather, the Redskins-Bucs preseason game scheduled for Thursday night has been moved up to Wednesday.

              **********

              Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

              13) Very bad news for the Vikings Tuesday; QB Teddy Bridgewater hurt his leg and is done for the year. New starter Shaun Hill is 16-18 as an NFL starter; he was 3-5 starting for the ’14 Rams, his only starts since 2010. Hill is 36 and a vastly different player than the mobile Bridgewater.

Minnesota has no competent backup QB now, good news if you’re a fan of Austin Davis, Bryce Petty or Mark Sanchez.

              12) Think it was Troy Aikman who said on TV last weekend that nickel packages (5 DB’s) were used on 62% of NFL plays last year. You get more passing in games, you need more defensive backs.

              11) Andrew Luck/Kevin Hogan went 67-18 in starting Stanford’s last 85 football games; big shoes to fill for this year’s Cardinal QB.

              10) Tennis balls at the US Open are different; men’s tennis balls have black writing on them and weigh slightly more than women’s tennis balls, which have red writing on them.

              Insert your own joke here.

              9) Mountain West basketball tournament is most always in Las Vegas, so impressive that San Diego State has won its last six conference tourney games against the Rebels. Tough to win road games in March.

              8) Miami’s Jose Fernandez has made 33 road starts in his career and is 8-14 in those games. He has made 41 home starts and is 27-2 there.

              7) Joey Bosa finally signed with San Diego; he won’t lose any salary, but you have to wonder how far behind he is, as far as preparing for this year.

              6) South Alabama plays Mississippi State this week; USA’s defensive coordinator is the son of Ole Miss’ DC, so chances are pretty strong he got a good game plan from his dad on how to deal with the Bulldog offense, seeing as Ole Miss and Miss State are archrivals.

Too bad South Alabama doesn’t have some of Ole Miss’ players.

              5) Former Packer WR James Jones is having trouble picking up San Diego’s offense; Chargers run a different offense than Green Bay– its like learning a new language, which ain’t always easy.

              4) Apparently Tim Tebow did alright in his baseball tryout Tuesday; you would think someone will take a chance on him and at least let him play in the Arizona Fall League. What do you have to lose?

              3) You could have won a sizeable bet in March if you had bet that Didi Gregorius would bat CLEANUP in five major league games this season. Gregorius was born in Holland, by the way- he has 17 HRs this year.

              2) Pirates’ OF Starling Marte has a great throwing arm; he threw Javier Baez out at the plate with a perfect throw from LF Monday night, when Baez’s run would’ve won the game. Marte now has 17 outfield assists this season.

1– Quote of the Day, part 2: When asked which assistant coach has the toughest job on an NFL coaching staff, Giants’ coach Ben McAdoo said this:

“…….the position coach who coaches the head coach’s area of expertise.”

LEADING OFF: Sale vs Verlander, King Felix vs Rangers
                        August 31, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                        PAIR OF ACES

Two AL Central aces square off when Chicago's Chris Sale (15-7, 3.14) faces Detroit's Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.33). Sale is coming off a strong start for the White Sox, striking out 14 over nine innings in a 3-1 loss to Felix Hernandez and the Mariners. Meanwhile, Verlander is 7-1 with a 2.00 ERA over his past 11 starts.

                        KING IN SWING

Felix Hernandez (9-4, 3.14) tries to win his sixth straight decision when Seattle wraps a series at Texas. Hernandez hasn't lost since returning from the disabled list on July 20 and has a 2.43 ERA in five August starts.

                        BACK IN THE FOLD

Aaron Sanchez (12-2, 2.99) returns to Toronto's rotation against Baltimore after being optioned to the minor leagues following his last start Aug. 20. The move was made to skip one of Sanchez's starts in an effort to limit his innings. Sanchez has hit a speed bump in his breakout season, allowing a 5.29 ERA over three August starts.

                        RESURGENT RYAN

Ryan Vogelsong (3-3, 3.02) looks to cap a strong August that began with his return from facial fractures after taking a pitch to the face in May. The Pirates righty is 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in five starts since coming off the DL, and earlier this month he called the injury a ''blessing in disguise'' because he was able to spend time cleaning up his delivery with pitching coach Ray Searage. Jason Hammel (13-7, 3.21) is up for the Cubs.

                        YOUTHFUL YANKS

Luis Cessa (4-0, 4.11) isn't one of the big-name Baby Bombers, but the 24-year-old can keep up his emergence in the Yankees rotation in a start at Kansas City. Cessa, formerly a Mets prospect, has victories in his first two major league starts this month, allowing three runs over 12 innings while throwing just 184 pitches. Royals righty Ian Kennedy (9-9, 3.57) has a 1.14 ERA over his past six starts.

                        WILD CHASE

The Mets and Marlins conclude a series with NL wild card implications. Miami righty David Phelps (7-6, 2.52) makes his sixth start this season after allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings last time out. Bartolo Colon (12-7, 3.44) has won consecutive starts for New York. Both teams are chasing the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot.

                        SHELBY RETURNS

Diamondbacks righty Shelby Miller (2-9, 7.14) will be called up from Triple-A Reno to make his 15th start of the season. Miller hasn't pitched in the majors since July 6 and his ERA is nearly double that of any previous season.

Hottest team: Angels (7-3 last 10)

It’s been a lost season for the Halos, who sit 16 games below .500 with five weeks remaining. However, Los Angeles has heated up by winning six of seven, including taking the first two games of its series against Cincinnati. The pitching has been fantastic in this recent stretch, allowing two runs or fewer five times, while capturing road series victories against the Blue Jays and Tigers. Each of the last three starting pitchers (Tyler Skaggs, Matt Shoemaker, and Jered Weaver) has tossed quality outings, as Ricky Nolasco heads to the mound tonight. Nolasco is winless in his last five starts for the Angels, as they go for the sweep of the Reds.

Coldest team: Mariners (2-8 last 10)

Seattle has fallen apart at the wrong time as the M’s look to avoid a sweep against the AL West-leading Rangers this afternoon. The Mariners rallied from a 4-0 deficit against Cole Hamels on Tuesday to take a 6-4 advantage at Texas, but the bullpen fell apart late in an 8-7 defeat. Seattle has lost five of six games on its current road trip with the only victory coming from the arm of ace Felix Hernandez at Chicago last Friday. King Felix heads to the hill today as the M’s own a sparking 7-1 record in his past eight starts since getting activated from the disabled list in July.

Hottest pitcher: Ian Kennedy, Royals (9-9, 3.57 ERA)

Kansas City suffered only its fifth loss in its last 23 games in Tuesday’s extra-innings setback to New York. Kennedy went through a stretch of seven consecutive starts from July through early August without a victory, but has turned it around recently. The Kansas City right-hander is unbeaten in his past four trips to the mound, while allowing five earned runs in his last seven starts. Kennedy owns impressive road victories at Boston and Detroit this month, while Kansas City has won six of his last eight home starts.

Coldest pitcher: Yovani Gallardo, Orioles (4-6, 5.69 ERA)

Gallardo is going through his worst season on the Major League level, owning an ERA of 5.69, more than 1.50 runs higher than his previous poorest campaign in 2013. The right-hander allowed a season-high eight runs (seven earned) in less than two innings in his previous outing against the Yankees in a 14-4 setback. Gallardo is winless in his last four starts, including home losses to the Astros and Red Sox this month. The Orioles start Wednesday’s action sitting three games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East as Gallardo has split a pair of starts against Toronto this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (4-0 last four)

One of the toughest total losses of the season happened in Cleveland on Tuesday, as the Twins and Indians went UNDER the total of 10 in a 5-4 Tribe victory. What made it so tough was the two AL Central rivals were tied at 4-4 after two innings, but combined for one run in the final seven innings as Cleveland sent Minnesota to its 12th straight loss. Cleveland’s offense has struggled over the last nine games, scoring more than one run only twice. Corey Kluber takes the mound tonight as a heavy favorite against Minnesota, as the Indians have gone UNDER the total in four of his last six starts against the Twins since 2015.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (6-0 last six)

Atlanta’s offense has performed better over the last few months since a horrible start to the season. The Braves have plated at least six runs in four straight home games, including a seven-spot in Tuesday’s win over the Padres. Atlanta’s pitching fared well last night by allowing three runs to San Diego, but the Braves have yielded at least six runs in five of their past six games at Turner Field. Matt Wisler is coming off a fantastic effort against Arizona in his last outing by scattering two hits in eight innings of a 3-1 win, but the Atlanta right-hander had allowed at least six runs in his previous four outings.

Matchup to watch: Marlins vs. Mets

Miami’s offense is tanking at the wrong time after being held to fewer than four runs in its fourth straight game, all losses. The Marlins jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage against the Mets last night, but allowed three runs in the bottom of the first and never recovered in a 7-4 defeat. The two NL East rivals play the third of a four-game series tonight at Citi Field as the Mets sit 2 ½ games behind the Cardinals for the second Wild Card position in the National League.

The Mets are surging at the right time by winning eight of their past 10 games as Bartolo Colon takes the mound tonight. Colon is fresh off back-to-back victories over the Giants and Phillies, while the Mets are 5-2 against the Marlins in his last seven starts since 2015. David Phelps counters for Miami, as the Marlins have won four of the right-hander’s five starts this month. The Marlins own a perfect 3-0 mark in Phelps’ three August road starts, including solid performances at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
The Cubs go for the three-game sweep of the Pirates at Wrigley Field, as Jason Hammel looks to continue his home domination for Chicago. Hammel has beaten Pittsburgh twice this season, but what’s more impressive is the right-hander not allowing a run in his last three home starts, a span of 20 scoreless innings. The Cubs own a perfect 5-0 record at Wrigley Field when Hammel takes the mound since the All-Star break, while Chicago has posted an 18-3 mark in its past 21 games on the North Side overall.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-320) vs. Twins

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+115) at Tigers

Biggest line move: Rangers (+110 to +100) vs. Mariners
