    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of this weekend's more interesting college football games.........

-- UCLA @ Stanford (-6.5)-- Interesting Pac-12 game Thursday night.

-- Alabama (-5) @ Texas A&M-- Crimson Tide just keeps on winning.

-- Nebraska @ Minnesota (-1.5)-- Cornhuskers play lot of close games.

-- USC @ Notre Dame (-6)-- Hope coach Sarkisian gets the help he needs.

-- Michigan State @ Michigan (-7)-- Three straight shutouts for Wolverines.

-- Ole Miss (-10.5) @ Memphis-- Regional rivalry; Tigers haven't lost yet.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

If you're a USC football fan, Monday was a bad day, on both coasts........

    13) Steve Spurrier is one of the best college football coaches ever; he coached in the pros with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL and the Redskins in the NFL, he won a national title at Florida and he won at South Carolina more than anyone else has, but Father Time never loses- the Gamecocks are 2-4, they have struggled to develop a QB and because Spurrier is 70, recruiting has suffered. Its no fun getting old.

    12) We hope Steve Sarkisian gets the help he needs and gets his life in order; thats a lot more important than his career right now. USC fired Sarkisian Monday; they go to Notre Dame Saturday-- interim coach Clay Helton will be the 4th different USC head coach to oppose the Irish in their last four meetings.

    11) Royals 9, Astros 6-- KC scored six runs in top of 8th inning to force Game 5 and send Astro fans home unhappy. Houston's bullpen is the team's weak link.

    10) Blue Jays 8, Rangers 4-- Toronto has been favored in all four games of series, but Texas won last 11 Cole Hamels starts and he is starting Game 5 Wednesday.

    9) Cubs 8, Cardinals 6-- Last time Jake Arrieta lost was to the Phillies in July, when Hamels threw his no-hitter, obviously before he got traded. Four of the eight starting position players for the Cubs are rookies.

    8) Mets 13, Dodgers 7-- For a team with a $300M payroll, the Dodgers have awful pitching depth. Kershaw goes on three days' rest in Game 4 tonight.

    7) Steelers 24, Chargers 20-- Michael Vick did what he had to do in 4th quarter, after doing very little in first three quarters. Steelers' first TD was scored by defense. Bad loss for San Diego, which goes to Lambeau Field Sunday.

    6) I'm not a fan of dugout interviews during playoff games; whats the point? No one ever says anything interesting, anyway.

    5) Only 22 states give state employees off for Columbus Day.

    4) ESPNU televised a Kentucky basketball practice over weekend, which means they'll probably be showing a Duke practice soon, too.

    3) Fox Sports1 is so desperate for ratings, they did a feature Sunday night on fantasy football Sunday featuring porn star Lisa Ann; I have no idea how much she does or does not know (her brother is apparently heavily involved in fantasy sports) but if she wasn't a porn star, I doubt they'd be doing a feature about her on national television.

    2) Brandon Weeden has now lost his last 11 NFL starts; time for Dallas to give Matt Cassel a chance. Also time for the Cowboys to be flexed off of national TV until Tony Romo is back playing.

    1) Baltimore Ravens' third down defense in their only win: 2 for 13
Baltimore Ravens' third down defense in their four losses: 37 of 67.

Cubs' Russell leaves with hamstring ailment

CHICAGO -- Cubs shortstop Addison Russell left Chicago's National League Division Series Game 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday with reported left hamstring tightness after tripling in the fourth inning.

Russell, 1-for-2 in the game at Wrigley Field, slid head-first into third base after sending a long drive to deep left with two outs.

Javier Baez entered as a pinch runner and was stranded at third. Baez then remained in the game at shortstop.

Russell is 2-for-8 in the series, 3-for-12 in the postseason.

Cardinals switch to Lackey for Game 4

Facing elimination, the St. Louis Cardinals will turn to veteran right-hander John Lackey in Game 4 on Tuesday, hoping to stay alive in the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Lance Lynn was originally scheduled to pitch Game 4 for St. Louis, but with the Cardinals needing to win Tuesday in Wrigley Field to stave off elimination, manager Mike Matheny switched to Lackey. The Cubs lead the best-of-five series two games to one.

Lackey, the winning pitcher in Game 1, will pitch on three days' rest, and the Cardinals hope he can be as effective as he was Friday, when he pitched 7 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in the Cardinals' 4-0 victory.

Cubs' Hammel rested and ready for Game 4 start

CHICAGO -- Jason Hammel, who will pitch in a potential series clincher for the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, knows what it is like to work big games.

The veteran right-hander will work Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, with the Cubs needing one more win to capture the best-of-five set.

"I've done this a few times now in the postseason, and I understand that it's just another ballgame," he said Monday before the Cubs beat the Cardinals 8-6 in Game 3. "I've been preparing for this game since my last outing in Cincinnati (a 5-3 win on Oct. 1), so I've had a little time to think about it, and honestly, I'll be ready to go."

Kershaw set to pitch Game 4 on short rest

NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets haven't agreed on much during a heated National League Division Series.

Except this: The best pitcher to take the ball for the Dodgers in Game 4 on Tuesday night is three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.

During his press conference after New York's 13-7 win Monday night, Mets manager Terry Collins was asked if he preferred to see Kershaw or left-hander Alex Wood on the mound Tuesday.

"Would I have any preference?" Collins said with a laugh. "Yeah, I got a preference. Believe me, this is no slap at Alex Wood. He's a fine pitcher, but I don't want that other monster on the mound."

Well, Collins and the Mets are going to see that monster Tuesday, when the Dodgers try to extend their season by sending Kershaw to the mound on three days' rest. The Mets hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

            Tuesday's Playoff Action
            October 13, 2015

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (102-63) at CHICAGO CUBS (100-66)

NL Division Series – Game 4
            Sportsbook.ag Line: St. Louis +105, Chicago -115, Total: 7.5

The Cubs will be looking to close out the series when they host the Cardinals in Game 4 on Tuesday.

St. Louis was the best team in baseball during the regular season, but the team now finds itself on the ropes heading into Tuesday’s meeting with Chicago. The Cardinals are one game away from elimination and will need to defeat a Cubs team that simply hasn’t been losing very much recently. Chicago has won 11 of its past 12 games dating back to the regular season and is playing with a ton of confidence.

The Cardinals, however, will be sending the better of the two starting pitchers to the mound in this one. RHP John Lackey (14-10, 2.68 ERA, 180 K) will be toeing the rubber for St. Louis and he’s going up against RHP Jason Hammel (10-7, 3.74 ERA, 172 K), who has not yet pitched this postseason.

The Cardinals will still feel confident heading into this one, as the team is 84-51 versus NL teams with an on base percentage of .325 or worse. They are also 10-4 against the money line when playing against a winning team with Lackey on the mound.

The Cubs, meanwhile, are 29-11 against the money line versus poor baserunning teams that average 0.5 or less stolen bases per game during the second half of the season. C Yadier Molina (Thumb) is questionable for St. Louis in this game and SS Addison Russell (Hamstring) is questionable for Chicago.

The Cardinals got a tough matchup with this dangerous Cubs team and John Lackey will do everything in his power to send this series to a Game 5 in St. Louis. Lackey was absolutely brilliant in Game 1 of this series, allowing no earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. Lackey threw just 86 pitches in that game and struck out five batters. He should be relatively well rested for this one after keeping his pitch count under 90 on Friday.

One player that could be an x-factor for the Cards on Tuesday is SS Jhonny Peralta (.275, 17 HR, 71 RBI). Peralta has been very good against Hammel in his career, going 9-for-23 with two homers, two doubles and eight RBI against the pitcher. Anything he can add offensively would be a major bonus for this team in this game. OFs Jason Heyward (.293, 13 HR, 60 RBI) and Stephen Piscotty (.305, 7 HR, 39 RBI) will also need to come through for their team once again. They combined to go 4-for-8 and each had a homer and two RBI against the Cubs on Monday. Both are being counted on to provide offense and they can’t disappear with the season on the line on Tuesday.

Jason Hammel will be making his fourth career playoff start on Tuesday, but it is his first of the year. In his most recent start against the Cardinals, Hammel allowed three earned runs in six innings of work. It was not a bad outing for the pitcher, but he will likely need to be better with Lackey starting for St. Louis. If the Cubs are going to win then 3B Kris Bryant (.275, 26 HR, 99 RBI), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.278, 31 HR, 101 RBI) and SS Starlin Castro (.265, 11 HR, 69 RBI) will need to step it up at the plate against Lackey.

The three of them are a combined 6-for-33 with no homers and just two RBI against the starter in their careers, but they are also the guys that have been consistently producing for Chicago in this series. Castro specifically is 4-for-8 with a homer over the past two games and has provided a major spark to a team that really was beginning to doubt him midway through the season.

OF Kyle Schwarber (.246, 16 HR, 43 RBI) is no guarantee to play in this game, but if he does then he will also be counted on to provide a spark. He has homered twice since the start of the playoffs and is an excellent source of power for Chicago.

Fan critically injured in fight outside Dodger Stadium
              October 13, 2015

LOS ANGELES (AP) A fan was critically injured in a fight outside Dodger Stadium following Friday night's playoff game and detectives were searching for suspects, Los Angeles police said.

The victim remained hospitalized Tuesday, but few other details were available, including the person's age and gender, said Officer Ricardo Hernandez.

The fight broke out around 10:30 p.m. in a parking lot after the Dodgers lost the opening game of the National League Division Series to the New York Mets, 3-1.

An argument between fans quickly escalated into violence, Hernandez said. It wasn't clear whether those involved were fans of rival teams.

Detectives with the robbery-homicide division were interviewing witnesses and reviewing stadium surveillance footage, Hernandez said.

A call to a Dodgers spokesman seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Monday.

Security at Dodger Stadium came under national scrutiny after a 2011 attack in the parking lot on opening day left San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow with brain damage. Two men - Marvin Norwood and Louie Sanchez - later were imprisoned after pleading guilty.

Stow sued the Dodgers and their former owner Frank McCourt, saying they were to blame for the attack because of insufficient security and lighting. A jury faulted the team, along with Sanchez and Norwood, and awarded Stow nearly $18 million after a six-week trial in 2014.

              ----------------------------

                Rested Cardinals await Steelers
                October 17, 2015

After a rout of the Lions at Detroit, Bruce Arians took his Cardinals to a resort in West Virginia rather than head back to Arizona.

With another road game in the East on Sunday at Pittsburgh, the travel itinerary seemed to make plenty of sense.

And with the Steelers coming off a gut-wrenching Monday nighter at San Diego that they won on the final play, well, Arians' bunch might be the more-rested squad.

Arians spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh, mostly as offensive coordinator, winning two Super Bowls before being exiled.

He since has won two NFL Coach of the Year awards, in 2012 as an interim in Indianapolis while Chuck Pagano fought leukemia, and last season with the Cardinals. While he insists returning to the Steel City is no big deal and that he has done it before, others know better.

''Knowing him and how prepared that he is,'' Steelers star receiver Antonio Brown said, ''I'm sure he's going to want to come in here and put on a show, being how many people counted him out and wanted him out of here.''

He has the team to do it, too. Arizona (4-1) has scored a league-best 190 points and allowed 90; the 100-point differential is by far tops in the NFL.

The Steelers also have a potent offense - when Ben Roethlisberger, not Mike Vick, is at quarterback. He returned from a left knee injury to practice this week on a limited basis and is not likely to go Sunday.

''It's hard to watch when you really want to be out there,'' Roethlisberger said. ''I'm just trying to be the best on-the-sideline guy I can be. I don't want to be overbearing because Mike's been doing this for a long time and he's a real pro. I'm just here to help him in any way I can.''

The action began Thursday night with New Orleans beat Atlanta 31-21, handing the Falcons their first loss of the season.

Off this week are Dallas, Oakland, St. Louis and Tampa, all with 2-3 records.

New England (4-0) at Indianapolis (3-2)

                Ah, ''Deflategate II.'' BORING!

Let's concentrate on football, not under-inflated footballs.

Indy should get back starting quarterback Andrew Luck, but it won both games he missed with a shoulder issue.

New England has been on a rampage - sure, Tom Brady being ticked off about the whole scandal plays into that.

''I'm always pretty motivated regardless of the opponent, regardless of the team or the week, whether it's a preseason game, whether it's a regular-season game,'' Brady said.

''They're all important because there are so few of those where you get an opportunity in your life, so I don't take it for granted.''

Still, isn't there any human part of you that wants it a little extra this week?

`I'm a human,'' Brady said. ''There's no doubt. I'm definitely human.''

San Diego (2-3) at Green Bay (5-0)

Green Bay's fourth home game already, and with the bye next week, the Packers are sitting in a great spot. Their pass defense has been a revelation, and they have found a diverse rush in which eight players have played a part in getting an NFC-high 20 sacks.

San Diego lost in the final second on Monday night against the Steelers and now has to travel to Lambeau Field. The Chargers are 1-9 against Green Bay and Dan Fouts was their quarterback when they took that game in 1984.

                Carolina (4-0) at Seattle (2-3)

A Panthers win would establish them as a contender in the NFC - and make everyone wonder when the Seahawks will get straightened out. Of course, Seattle was 3-3 in 2014 and wound up in the Super Bowl.

Carolina should get back star linebacker Luke Kuechly to its solid defense, but it's the rushing game, led by QB Cam Newton and RB Jonathan Stewart, that has been just as impressive.

Seattle also expects back a key ingredient, RB Marshawn Lynch, though rookie Thomas Rawls filled in well. The Seahawks have gone 16 straight games dating back to last season with at least 100 yards rushing as a team and lead the NFL in rushing with 142.4 yards per game.

                Denver (5-0) at Cleveland (2-3)

Somehow, Josh McCown is the more prolific quarterback in this matchup, although Peyton Manning is 6-0 lifetime vs. Cleveland and the Broncos have won 10 straight against the Browns. McCown passed for a franchise-record 457 yards last week in leading a comeback win at the Ravens.

He's the first QB in NFL history with more than 450 yards passing, two TDs, a TD rushing and no interceptions in the same game and has thrown for 1,154 yards in the past three games.

The Broncos are one win from joining New England as the only original American Football League franchises to reach 450 regular-season wins. Their defense ranks first in the league, making up for a pedestrian offense thus far.

                Cincinnati (5-0) at Buffalo (3-2)

The previous time Cincinnati won its first six games was 1988, when it made the Super Bowl. Andy Dalton is off to the best start of his career with a 115.6 passer rating, highest in team history through five games, as part of the NFL's second-ranked offense.

Like the Bengals, the Bills barely squeezed out a victory last week and could be without quarterback Tyrod Taylor; EJ Manuel would start. Injuries have damaged Buffalo's offense - top RB LeSean McCoy has been sidelined by a hamstring problem and WR Sammy Watkins is coming back from a calf issue.

                Chicago (2-3) at Detroit (0-5)

After a horrific start, the Bears have responded to new coach John Fox with two straight victories, showing more gumption than in recent seasons. A victory at the winless Lions would actually make people in the Windy City stop obsessing on the Cubs. Well, maybe not.

The previous time the Lions looked as bad as they did in last Sunday's 42-17 walloping by Arizona was in 2008, when they went 0-16. A lopsided loss to Chicago could make a revival of such thoughts much less outlandish.

New York Giants (3-2) at Philadelphia (2-3), Monday night

The NFC East is so wide open that when these two meet in the season finale, it could be decisive. Still, the winner in prime time gets a leg up.

New York enters short-handed at receiver but on a three-game winning streak. Philadelphia's defense has come alive behind end Fletcher Cox, who had a career-high three sacks with two forced fumbles and one recovery last week vs. the Saints. Rookie LB Jordan Hicks has 25 tackles, a sack, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one interception in the last four games.

Washington (2-3) at New York Jets (3-1)

The Jets have New England next, so looking past this one could be tempting and very counterproductive. Coming off a bye, and with standout defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson returning from a four-game suspension, expect New York's stingy defense to be even more miserly.

The Redskins are vastly improved over 2014, Jay Gruden's first season as coach, but they folded late at Atlanta last week. Kirk Cousins, who threw a decisive pick-6 in overtime, usually struggles at the Meadowlands.

Baltimore (1-4) at San Francisco (1-4)

Hardly the Harbowl with coach Jim Harbaugh having left the dysfunctional 49ers for Michigan and older brother John in the midst of his worst season in Baltimore.

The Ravens have won four straight against the Niners, including the 2013 Super Bowl, from which the 49ers have only four starters still around. Both teams fell at the end of their tight Week 4 games.

Kansas City (1-4) at Minnesota (2-2)

The outdoors seem to agree with the Vikings, who are in their second and final season at TCF Bank Stadium before heading back inside in their new building. They've won five in a row in their temporary home.

Kansas City is reeling after some devastatingly close defeats and losing star running back Jamaal Charles with a torn right ACL. The Chiefs have allowed a league-worst 14 sacks, but Minnesota has not displayed a potent pass rush.

                Miami (1-3) at Tennessee (1-3)

Miami's first game since Joe Philbin was fired as coach, replaced by Dan Campbell.

''It's only Week (6 and we have) 12 games,'' said DT Ndamukong Suh, a major underachiever after signing the richest free-agent contract in NFL history for a defensive player. ''We put ourselves in a hole, but it's not too late to get us out of it.''

The Titans have the league's top-ranked pass defense, yielding 188 yards a game.

                Houston (1-4) at Jacksonville (1-4)

Although the Texans have won seven of the last nine in this series, five of the past seven meetings have been decided by seven points or less.

Houston goes back to Brian Hoyer at quarterback, and his top target, DeAndre Hopkins, leads the NFL with 578 yards receiving, looking for a fourth consecutive 100-yard game, which would tie Andre Johnson's franchise record.

Jacksonville expects to get DT Sen'Derrick Marks and RB Denard Robinson back from knee injuries.

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 13 season record: 39-38-2

                      6) Broncos -4 (366)-- Brock's (Osweiler) Bandwagon is picking up steam- W.

                      5) Chiefs -2.5 (414)-- Kansas City looking to win/cover sixth in a row- W.

                      4) Giants +2.5 (424)-- Both teams are playing in their home stadium- L.

                      1) Seahawks even (484)-- 6-5 Seattle led in fourth quarter in every game- W.

                      **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 14: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.......

                      14) Panthers 41, Saints 38-- This was like an old AFL game from the 60's, one of the most fun games I've watched in a while. Carolina won despite a -2 turnover ratio. Four weeks to go and the Panthers have a 2-game lead over the whole NFC for home field in the playoffs. Cam Newton needs to slide more; he took a beating in this game.

                      13) 49ers 26, Bears 20 OT-- Chicago missed a 35-yard FG on last play of regulation, missed a 40-yarder earlier, lost a game where they had a 13-yard edge in field position, which doesn't happen much. Chicago scored with 3:32 left to take 20-13 lead, but on last three drives, 49ers gained 135 yards on 10 plays, scoring tying/winning TDs.

                      12) Bengals 37, Browns 3-- Last week there were ten teams that were +2 or better in turnovers; Cleveland was only one of the ten to lose. In the first 14 games in Week 13, Browns were only team that was -2 or worse in turnovers. Teams that didn't score an offensive TD are 2-20 this year- two teams played each other, so really 1-19.

                      11) Titans 42, Jaguars 39-- Tennessee snapped 11-game home skid by beating Jags, last team they had beaten in Nashville. Jacksonville missed two PATs and a 2-point play. Marcus Mariota had an 87-yard rushing TD; Titans scored a defensive TD-- all five of its offensive TDs came on drives of 75+ yards.

                      10) Bills 30, Texans 21-- Dome team Houston caught break with good weather on a December day in western NY, but Bills threw 40-yard TD pass with 1:53 left for the winning score, ending Houston's win streak at four. Is it me, or was it a really bad day for kickers Sunday? Both teams missed a PAT in this game, Jaguars also missed two.

There were eight PATs missed in the NFL all of last year. There were eight missed and one blocked, just in today's games.

                      9) Dolphins 15, Ravens 13-- Game was scoreless at 2:00 warning of first half, Ravens had ball, but then Schaub threw a pick, Miami scored on next play. 0:20 later, Schaub threw his weekly pick-6 and when Ravens were offsides on PAT, Miami went for two and got it, then held on to win despite going scoreless in second half. Ravens got ball on Miami's 41 after a fumble with 4:17 left, but did nothing with it.

                      8) Seahawks 38, Vikings 7-- Seattle brought its A-game to Twin Cities, kicked the Vikings butts, outgaining them 433-125; they've now won five of last six games, and the Packers are back atop NFC North. Seattle holds the second Wild Card now.

This seems like a good time to point that the A's have signed two free agent pitchers this fall; starter Rich Hill, who didn't start a big league game from 2010-14, and Ryan Madson who wasn't even in the major leagues from 2012-14- they're both 35 now.

                      7) Cardinals 27, Rams 3-- You can tell when a football team has surrendered; Rams are one of those teams. I'm not a big fire-the-coach guy; don't think Jeff Fisher should go, but I do think every offensive coach should be fired. Watch them play, then you tell me. Arizona has two losses this year; in both games, they were -3 in turnovers.

                      6) Buccaneers 23, Falcons 19-- Atlanta was 5-0 at one point; both of these teams are 6-6 now and game behind Seattle for second Wild Card in NFC. No division winner under .500 should make the playoffs; they should replace them with extra Wild Card, so the best possible teams make playoffs. Jameis Winston is pretty good, by the way

                      5) Jets 23, Giants 20 OT-- Giants drove ball 67 yards on 17 plays on an epic drive that took 11:21 off the clock, but with a 20-10 lead and under 9:00 left, they went for it on 4th down instead of kicking an easy FG and failed. On last three drives of game from that point on, Jets gained 212 yards on 35 plays, scoring two FGs and a TD to end a 5-game losing streak to the Giants in dramatic fashion.

Last four weeks of the regular season, New York media can start specualting on who will be coaching the Giants next year, because it probably won't be Tom Coughlin.

                      4) Broncos 17, Chargers 3-- Brock Osweiler is 3-0 as Denver's QB; they scored 17 in both of his road starts, getting a defensive TD here. Chargers lost fifth home game in a row- they were outscored 50-6 in last two home games. Could be that December 20 is last-ever home game in San Diego for the Bolts, who are likely moving to LA.

                      3) Chiefs 34, Raiders 20-- KC won/covered its last six games; Maclin caught couple TD passes in 4th quarter, then Chiefs scored a defensive TD to wrap things up- they have been plus in turnovers eight games in row now. Why exactly did the Eagles give up on Maclin- he has revitalized the Chiefs' passing game.

Derek Carr imploded in fourth quarter, throwing three INTs when Oakland led 20-14 after the third quarter. Chiefs' three TD drives in fourth quarter came on "drives" of 2-13 yards, followed by a defensive TD. Quite a turnaround this year for KC.

                      2) Eagles 35, Patriots 28-- Philly scored TDs on a punt return, a blocked punt and an INT return; thats how you pull an upset on the road. Luckily the NFL has Wild Cards since in five of eight divisions, the leader has a 3+-game lead- not lot of drama there. In two of the three close races, the whole division sucks (6-6 Colts, 5-6 Redskins are the leaders). Only the NFC North (Packers/Vikings 8-4) has a real quality race.

Philly's INT return for a TD was a 99-yarder, by the way. Eagles are 5-7, have their next three games at home- they're in thick of the playoff race.

                      1) Steelers 45, Colts 10-- In 2004, Giants traded with Chargers to get Eli Manning after the draft; San Diego got Philip Rivers. Ben Roethlisberger wound up with the Steelers. Now all three QBs are really good, but if that draft happened again today, wouldn't you take Big Ben first over the other two? I know I would.

                        Monday's Pearl Harbor Classic
                        December 6, 2015

A new week of college hoops kicks things off this Monday night with a pair of matchups in this year’s Pearl Harbor Classic from Bloch Arena in Hawaii. In the first game, the Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 will square-off against the Big East’s Villanova Wildcats and in the backend of the tournament’s double-header the Pac-12’s Oregon Ducks tangle with the Navy Midshipman from the Patriot League.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Villanova Wildcats (7 p.m. FOX Sports 1)

                        Betting Point Spread: Villanova -4.5

                        Betting Matchup

Oklahoma comes into this tournament with a perfect record of 5-0 and it has covered against the spread in all three games of its games with a posted betting line. Last Wednesday, the Sooners upended Central Arkansas 111-68 as heavy 29 ½-point home favorites and the total easily went OVER the 160-point line. The total has gone OVER in two of three games with the team averaging 88.2 points a game.

The hottest hand so far has been senior guard Buddy Hield with an average of 21.4 points per game; however the Sooners have three other players scoring in double figures. The team as a whole is shooting 48.9 percent from the field while hitting 44.6 percent of its shots from three-point range. The Sooners are ranked third in the nation in rebounds with an average of 48.6 boards over their first five games.

The Wildcats are a straight-up 7-0 on the year following last Tuesday’s 86-72 victory against fellow Big 5 rival St. Joseph’s as 13 ½-point road favorites. With additional SU wins against Nebraska, Stanford and Georgia Tech they are a profitable 5-1 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in four of six games with a closing betting line.

Villanova is another potent scoring team with an average of 79 PPG and it also has four players scoring in double figures. Junior guard Josh Hart has led the way with 15.3 PPG while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and he is also pulling down an average of 7.4 rebounds a game. Senior guard Ryan Arcidiacono and junior forward Chris Jenkins are each scoring over 12 PPG and Arcidiacono is the team’s top three-point shooter hitting 39.4 percent of shots.

                        Betting Trends

The Sooners are 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games, but they are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games played on a Monday. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games against the Big East.

The Wildcats are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against a team from the Big 12 and they are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 Monday games. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games played at a neutral site.

These two last met in 2006 with Villanova coming away with a 67-51 victory as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The total stayed UNDER the closing 135-point line.

Oregon Ducks vs. Navy Midshipman (9:45 p.m. FOX Sports 1)

                        Betting Point Spread: Oregon -12

                        Betting Matchup

The Ducks’ SU six-game winning streak to start the season came to a halt with last Friday’s 80-69 loss to UNLV as two-point favorites in a game played at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. They have now failed to cover in three of their last four games. The total stayed UNDER the 151 ½-point closing line against the Rebels and it has now stayed UNDER in three of five games with a betting line.

Freshman guard Tyler Dorsey is averaging 14.4 PPG and he leads an Oregon squad that boasts five different players scoring at least 12 points a game. Senior forward Dwayne Benjamin is the team’s top scorer from beyond the arc with a 42.9 shooting percentage from three-point range. The Ducks are averaging 77 PPG and they are shooting 45.5 percent from the field. Defensively, they are holding teams to 66.6 points a game.

Navy comes into the Pearl Harbor Classic with a SU seven-game winning streak after stumbling out of the gate with losses against Florida and the College of Charleston. It knocked-off Penn 65-59 its last time out on Dec. 2 which was just the first time that the Midshipmen failed to score more than 70 points in their last six outings. The only game they have played this season with a betting line was in the 59-41 loss to the Gators in their season opener as 13-point home underdogs.

The Midshipman are averaging 66 PPG with sophomore guard Shawn Anderson scoring 13.2 PPG and sophomore forward Jace Hogan adding another 12 PPG. Anderson is hitting 53 percent of his shots from the field and 47.4 percent of his shots from three-point range and Hogan is also the team’s top rebounder with 5.7 a game. Navy is ranked 13th in the nation in points allowed; giving-up an average of 60.4 points a game.

                        Betting Trends

The Ducks are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games at a neutral site and they are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS loss. The total has stayed UNDER in 12 of their last 16 games following a SU loss.

The Midshipmen are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight nonconference games and they have failed to cover in their last four neutral-site games. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last nine games outside their conference.

This will be the first meeting between these two teams in recent memory.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Nate Britt matched his career high with 17 points and No. 9 North Carolina rolled to a huge first-half lead to beat Davidson 98-65 on Sunday.

Justin Jackson added 15 points to help the Tar Heels (7-1) cap a big week with an easy win over the cold-shooting Wildcats (5-1). North Carolina scored the first 10 points, then used an 18-4 run to build a 25-point lead before the break.

It was a good finish to a week that saw the Tar Heels get senior guard Marcus Paige back from a hand injury that had sidelined him since the preseason. Paige scored 20 points Tuesday night in a victory over No. 2 Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Jack Gibbs led Davidson with 19 points.

                          NO. 25 BAYLOR 69, NO. 16 VANDERBILT 67

WACO, Texas (AP) - Taurean Prince scored a career-high 30 points and Lester Medford had 15, including the winning 3-pointer, in Baylor's victory over Vanderbilt.

Medford hit from the left corner while being knocked down with 42 seconds left.

Rico Gathers Gathers had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Bears (6-1). He has 920 rebounds to break Brian Skinner's school record of 915.
