          Thursday, August 14

Hitters' wind at this stadium Thursday

Sluggers in the lineups for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers will be licking their chops Thursday as forecasts are calling for wind blowing out to left field at 12 mph at Comerica Park.

When wind blows out to left at Comerica Park, the Over has gone 5-1 thus far in the season. Furthermore, there is an average of 1.67 home runs per game when the wind blows out to left between 10 and 20 mph.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of 7.5

Recently traded pitcher meaning wins for new team

When the Oakland Athletics acquired Jeff Samardzija they expected to have a dominate ace to guarentee wins. The A's have gotten what they wished for as they are 6-1 in Samardzija's seven starts for the team.

Samardzija has only allowed 17 runs since wearing the A's uniform which equals 2.4 runs per game.

Umpire not been kind for National League team

Tim Timmons has spelled bad things for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers are 1-7 in their last eight games with Timmons behind the plate.

The Brewers will be playing at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs Thursday.

Nationals not happy when this umpire calls the game

The Washington Nationals have not been able to figure out Brian Gorman's calls. The Nats are have lost four straight with Gorman behind the plate.

Rangers' pitcher wrecking Rays during his career

Yu Darvish has faced the Tampa Bay Rays four times in his career and he has dominated them. Darvish and the Rangers are 4-0 in his four starts against the Rays.

Darvish has allowed three hits over those four games and has 28 strikeouts (average seven per game).

Rockies' SS Troy Tulowitzki, out for season

Tulowitzki is on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip flexor strain. He will undergo surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

Nationals' RF Jayson Werth, questionable Thursday

Werth has been diagnosed with a right shoulder sprain and has missed the last two games. He is questionable to play Thursday against the Mets.

Blue Jays' 1B Edwin Encarnacion, questionable Friday

Encarnacion is on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 2 strain in his right quad. He is on a rehab assignment and could rejoin the team for the series opener against the White Sox on Friday.

Scorching Royals dominant as home favorite

You'd be hard pressed to find a team hotter than the Kansas City Royals over the past few weeks. The American League Central leaders are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall and 17-4 in their last 21. Even more impressive is the fact that when oddsmakers tab the Royals as a home fave, they've cashed in for backers in seven straight ball games.

That is exactly the spot the Royals are in Thursday afternoon. They are currently slight -107 home faves as they finish up their four-game series with the Oakland A's from Kauffman Stadium.

Probable pitchers for the game are Jeff Samardzija for the A's and James Shields for the Royals.

          • Who's Not Hot - NL

            August 14, 2014

The National League isn't nearly as polarizing as the American League is for baseball betting fans. However, there are still some clubs that are sucking money out of your wallets left and right that should be remembered before placing a bet on the diamond.

We'll showcase the three worst that the NL has to offer here at VegasInsider.com.

Colorado Rockies (46-73, -$2,667) – The Rockies had everything rolling at the beginning of the season, and there was even a point back in April when they had the best money mark in the game. However, they haven't been able to keep either shortstop Troy Tulowitzki or outfielder Carlos Gonzalez healthy this entire year, and they simply don't have all that much of a team aside from that.

The most embarrassing moment of the year might have come when they gave up a steal of home plate last week because catcher Michael McKenry was literally just too lazy to pay attention to the runner on third base when he lobbed the ball back to the pitcher's mound. The upcoming Broncos season can't start soon enough for Denver sports fans.

Arizona Diamondbacks (51-67, -$1,490) – Worse for Colorado? That steal of home came against an Arizona team which has completely given up on the season as well. The Diamondbacks made a number of relatively minor moves at the trade deadline that did net them some prospects in exchange for men like Martin Prado and Brandon McCarthy who really weren't going to be a part of the team in the long-term future either. It wasn't a complete washout.

Arizona has at least competed in the second-half of the year, and on the road, the team is 26-28 and +$252. It's playing at Chase Field that has been so brutal for the Diamondbacks. They started off the year in horrid form at home, and that just hasn't gotten any better. Arizona is 25-39 and -$1,742 at Chase Field this year.

Atlanta Braves (60-59, -$1,013) – The argument could be made that manager Fredi Gonzalez should have his job on the line if the Braves don't make the playoffs this year. They really haven't had a team with a legit shot at winning the World Series since he took over. Sure, losing RHP Kris Medlen and RHP Brandon Beachy before the season started to Tommy John surgery didn't help the cause, but this isn't a .500 team.

This is a club which should be winning at least 88-90 games and winning, at minimum, a Wild Card slot. Instead, Atlanta finds itself five games back of the Washington Nationals for the top spot in the NL East and 2 ½ games back of the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants for that last Wild Card spot. If Atlanta keeps faltering like this, both the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets could plausibly catch up, and if this team finishes fourth, there might not be any reprieve for Gonzalez, nor should there be.

This club cashing in on Under tickets

The Chicago Cubs and their backers haven't had much to enjoy during the 2014 season, but if you've been riding the Cubbies' recent Under trend, you've been cashing tickets.

The Cubs have posted an 0-6-1 Over/Under record in their last seven ball games, including five straight under the total.

Oddsmakers have posted a total of 7.5 for this matchup.

                    • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

There are seven new head coaches in the NFL this season...........

Cleveland—Mike Pettine—Defensive background, was HS coach featured in a 1999 TV reality show about high school football in eastern PA. Has come a long way; now has Johnny Manziel as his rookie QB/franchise savior.

Detroit—Jim Caldwell-- Went 26-63 as coach at Wake Forest, then didn’t win a title in Indy even though he had Peyton Manning. If I was a Lions’ fan, wouldn’t be very happy with this hire.

Houston—Bill O’Brien—Another person Tom Brady made famous; he was QB coach in Foxboro, then was doing good work at Penn State until he bolted to this job for unknown reasons.

Minnesota—Mike Zimmer—How come the media never complained when this guy got passed over for HC jobs year after year? Finally gets his chance with the Vikings playing outdoors for the next two years, as a new stadium is built.

Tampa Bay—Lovie Smith—Won more than he lost in Chicago, but won only one playoff game the last five years, so they stupidly fired him. Bucs benefit from Bears’ mistake.

Tennessee— Ken Whienhunt-- Got Cardinals to the Super Bowl; I repeat, he got the Cardinals to the Super Bowl. Tremendous hire.

Washington—Jay Gruden-- Was HC in Arena League for 8 or 9 years; once quit as HC to go back to playing QB in the AFL. Will do well in Washington.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.......

                      13) On Monday, there was an article online about Eldrick Woods lobbying to be on the Ryder Cup team; on Wednesday, he announced his golf was done until December for medical reasons. Alrighty then, the old “You can’t fire me, I quit!!!” tactic.

Saves Tom Watson the trouble of not picking Eldrick when it comes time to choose up sides for one of the most overrated events of any year, the Ryder Cup.

                      12) If every Bronx Bomber game ended after the 5th inning, they’d be 63-38-18 this season. But games are nine innings and they’re 61-58; is it all the bullpen’s fault? Without knowing exact numbers, I’m guessing their late-inning offense is very poor, they don’t tack on to leads, so they lose a lot of close games. They’ll be better next year when they get ARod back.

                      11) Why did the Lions hire Jim Caldwell as their coach? Seriously, they couldn’t come up with a better candidate than him? If I was a Lion fan, one playoff win in 50 years would be frustrating, but hiring this guy, who couldn’t win with Payton Manning under center, who went 26-63 in eight years at Wake Forest, that would be a big problem for me.

                      10) Rutgers at Washington State on August 30 is a very long road trip for the Scarlet Knights (Rutgers is in New Jersey); they opened at Fresno State LY, so they must have a big travel budget. Wonder how many times I’ll look for Rutgers in the AAC section before I get it ingrained in my head that they’re in the Big 14 now.

                      9) Saturday is National Rollercoaster Day. One of the things in life I like least are rollercoasters. Seriously. Scare the hell out of me. Ever see the movie Shakedown, with Sam Elliott/Peter Weller? Rollercoaster goes into the ocean at the end? Have not been on one since I saw that movie. All I think about when I’m on one is how many ways it could go off the tracks and kill me. No bueno.

                      8) Baseball injury updates: Manny Machado is on the DL with a sprained knee he injured while swinging a bat in a game. Weird thing. Texas put Yu Darvish on the DL; Troy Tulowitzki is done for the year after hip surgery; first they spell his name wrong on his giveaway t-shirt, then he gets hurt and is gone for the year. Rough year for the Rockies.

                      7) Looks like the Mets will bring manager Terry Collins back next year; he can’t get over .500 with the Mets but keeps his job longer than he did with Houston or the Angels, where he was seldom under .500. Go figure.

                      6) Cincinnati transfer Jermaine Lawrence is eligible immediately at Manhattan, where he is expected to be a big addition to Steve Masiello’s team.

                      5) Arizona Diamondbacks played a doubleheader in Cleveland on Wednesday, won the nightcap in extra innings, then flew to Miami and got in at 3:39am. Not every day is glamorous for a pro athlete.

                      4) When the Atlanta Hawks traded Pete Maravich to the New Orleans Jazz, they got back two journeyman players and five draft picks, two of whom became David Thompson and Alex English, both Hall of Fame players. Problem for Atlanta was that neither Thompson or English ever played for the Hawks; Thompson signed with the ABA’s Nuggets, English was traded to Milwaukee. Whoops.

                      3) Tennessee Volunteers haven't played in a bowl game since 2010; they've had four head coaches the last seven years. Butch Jones will get it done in Knoxville, if he is given enough time. Not a lot of patient people in the SEC.

                      2) Louisville Cardinals are 15-29 vs spread at home since Bobby Petrino left there for Arkansas after the '06 season; now he is back with the Cardinals-- can he get Louisville back to being a dominant home team, as they move up to the ACC?

                      1) University of Texas gave alum/former NFL QB Vince Young a $100K a year job as a fund raiser, proving that if you win a national title for the Longhorns, you are indeed set for life. He works in community outreach, meaning he is going to shake a lot of boosters' hands in the coming years.

Divisional rival not happy seeing this Royals pitcher

The Minnesota Twins have never been able to figure out Kansas City Royals' Darren Duffy. The Twins are 0-4 in their last four starts against Duffy.

Those four starts have seen the Twins score only four runs against Duffy and have 21 strikeouts.

                            Intra-divisional matchup has been one-sided

To say the Los Angeles Angels have been decimating the Texas Rangers may be an understatement. The Angels going into their weekend series with the Rangers taking the last seven games.

The Angels have outscored the Rangers 48-22, a run differential of 26, and have held the Rangers to three runs or less five times.

Under bettors rush to the window with these teams

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins have been a boon for totals bettors. In the last eight meetings between the D-Backs and Marlins, the teams are carrying a 1-7 over/under record.

The two teams have combined for 38 runs in those eight games (average 4.75 per game) and have six times scored five runs or less combined.

Rockies' OF Carlos Gonzalez, 15-day DL

Gonzalez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to left knee tendinitis. He is expected to undergo surgery on Monday and could miss the remainder of the season.

Nationals' RF Jayson Werth, questionable Friday

Werth has missed the last three games with a sprained right shoulder. He is questionable Friday against the Pirates.
