  • Dodgers visit Braves

    August 11, 2014

    L.A. Dodgers (67-52) at Atlanta (60-57)

First pitch: Monday, 7:10 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Atlanta -165, Los Angeles +155, Total: 7

Two storied franchises, the Dodgers and Braves, begin a four-game series at Turner Field on Monday night.

Los Angeles has gone 13-9 (.591) since the All-Star break to take a solid 4.5-game lead over the Giants in the NL West. The Dodgers were nearly swept in Milwaukee this weekend though, and after their offense mustered up a measly four runs over the first two games, they were saved by ace Clayton Kershaw who went eight strong inning (6 H, 1 ER, 6 K’s) in the 5-1 victory on Sunday. Despite some offensive struggles, 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.269 BA) has found his stroke and is 9-for-14 with three doubles, two home runs and 7 RBI over his past four contests. Atlanta had lost eight straight games -- all of which were on the road -- going into its weekend series against the NL East-leading Nationals, but was able to take 2-of-3 games in the return home, trimming the division deficit to 3.5 games behind Washington. The Braves' 3-1 win in the rubber match on Sunday was a microcosm of what they have done to be successful as the starting pitching of Alex Wood (7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 12 K’s) saved a below-average offense which is third-worst in the league in runs scored (437).

1B Freddie Freeman (.288 BA) has been a bright spot in their lineup, especially in the past four games where he's 8-for-15 with two doubles, a homer and 4 RBI. Newly acquired RHP Kevin Correia (5-13, 4.94 ERA) will toe the rubber for L.A. in this one, while Atlanta counters with flamethrowing, 23-year-old RHP Julio Teheran (10-8, 2.92 ERA). The Dodgers have done much better on the road this year with an MLB-best record of 37-25 (.597), but will have a tough time against the Braves who are an excellent 33-25 (.569) at Turner Field. These two clubs met just two weeks ago (July 29-31) when L.A. swept three games at home to push its record in this series over the past three years to 11-9, but Atlanta holds the 5-3 edge at Turner Field during this timeframe.

Some trends bettors may want to consider in this game include that the Braves are 87-49 (.640) under manager Fredi Gonzalez after having lost 4 or 5 of their previous six games, but the Dodgers are a stellar 35-8 (.814) versus an NL team with a batting average of .250 or worse in the second half of the season over the past two years. Los Angeles’ offense may be thin on Monday though with OF Yasiel Puig (back) questionable and SS Hanley Ramirez (side) on the 15-day DL. The one injury to watch for on Atlanta is SS Andrelton Simmons (ankle) who is questionable for the contest.

Correia has had a long career with 344 games pitched (213 starts) at the major-league level, and the Dodgers are hoping that he can provide just enough depth when needed. He’s never been an ace by any terms of the word and has over a 4.15 ERA in each of the past five seasons. With a pitiful 4.2 K/9 this year, Correia is by no means a strikeout pitcher, but has solid control (2.2 BB/9) and has done a pretty good job keeping the ball in the ballpark with 13 homers allowed over 129.1 frames (0.90 HR/9) with the Twins. Correia had quality starts in his final two outings with Minnesota as he combined to pitch 12 innings while allowing five runs (4 ER) and striking out seven with only one walk. In his 12 career games (8 starts) against the Braves, Correia is 3-3 with a 4.20 ERA and dreadful 1.62 WHIP, while allowing six home runs in 45 innings of work.

When he last faced Atlanta on May 20, 2013, the right-hander was tagged for five runs on eight hits in just four innings of work. OF Justin Upton has been great against the veteran in his career, as he is 16-for-44 (.364) with four doubles, 1 HR and 2 RBI. Overall, the players in Atlanta’s lineup have combined to go 38-for-108 (.352) against the righty with 13 extra-base hits (.500 SLG). SS Andrelton Simmons is the only player to really struggle versus Correia, going hitless in five at-bats. The Dodgers’ bullpen has gone 12-18 this year with a 3.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP, while converting 35-of-45 (78%) save chances. Closer Kenley Jansen (3.00 ERA, 32 saves) has struck out 14.1 batters per nine innings on the season and is 32-for-36 (89%) in his save opportunities.

Julio Teheran has been great in his second full season at the big league level and ranks in the top-10 among NL pitchers in all the major pitching categories. He's 2nd in innings (163.1), 3rd in complete games (3), 4th in WHIP (1.07), 8th in strikeouts (146) and 10th I ERA (2.92). He is striking out 8.0 batters per nine innings on the year and has shown amazing control (2.0 BB/9) for such a young pitcher. Teheran has been lucky though, benefiting from hitters having a .268 BABIP, which is well below the league average of .298 BABIP. He’s lasted at least seven innings in seven of his past 10 outings, and has allowed two or fewer runs in five of those starts. He did very well against the Dodgers two outings ago on July 31, tossing eight innings while allowing only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts with three walks in a losing effort. In his one other career start against L.A. in last year's playoffs, Teheran was bombed for six runs on eight hits and six runs in just 2.2 innings.

No player on L.A. has more than four at-bats against the youngster, and as a team they are 7-for-30 (.233) with three extra-base hits (1 HR) and eight strikeouts when facing him. OF Yasiel Puig was the player to take Teheran yard in their last matchup, but the Dodgers may not miss their other injured star, SS Hanley Ramirez, who went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against the right-hander. The Braves relievers are 17-20 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.31 WHIP this season, and have successfully converted 41-of-51 (80%) saves. Craig Kimbrel (1.91 ERA, 34 saves) has been mowing down batters at an incredible rate (15.1 K/9) while allowing one home run in his 47 innings of work (0.19 HR/9).

    • Parity creating tight division races

      August 11, 2014

Baltimore's big homestand is off to a rousing start, and the most intriguing series may be yet to come.

The Orioles took two of three from St. Louis, and they now lead the AL East by five games over Toronto - the largest division lead of any team in baseball. Manager Buck Showalter's team hosts the New York Yankees for three games starting Monday night. The third-place Yankees are six games behind, so if the Orioles can win this series as well, they'll be in good shape for the stretch.

It says something that Baltimore's five-game lead looks like such an impressive margin. Right now, all of the six division races look like they could go down to the wire. That wasn't the case last year at this time, when Atlanta was running away with the NL East, the Los Angeles Dodgers were comfortably ahead in the NL West and Detroit was taking control of the AL Central.

In 2014, every race is interesting - and they all matter since wild cards have to meet in a one-game playoff just to advance to the Division Series.

According to the number-crunchers at Fangraphs.com, there are 16 teams that still have at least a 15 percent chance of making the postseason. Chalk that up to the second wild card - and a level of parity in which only one team (Oakland) has won more than 60 percent of its games.

So get ready for more days like this coming Tuesday, when there is a full slate of 15 games and 11 of them involve at least one team solidly in postseason contention.

The Orioles took two of three in Toronto last week and have a chance to extend their lead over the Yankees during the next few days. Here's a look at the other five division races around baseball:

AL CENTRAL: Just over a week after acquiring star left-hander David Price, Detroit finds itself clinging to a precarious half-game lead over surging Kansas City. The Royals will have a chance to keep the pressure on if their offense holds up, and although the Tigers have their three Cy Young Award winners in Price, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, they now have to deal with injuries to Anibal Sanchez and Joakim Soria.

AL WEST: The Athletics and Los Angeles Angels look safely headed for the postseason, but both would like to avoid being a wild card. The teams play seven games against each other later this month. The Angels have baseball's second-best record but trail Oakland by four games.

NL EAST: Atlanta lost eight straight, giving Washington a chance to take control in this division, but the Nationals didn't really take advantage, losing two of three to the Braves in their recent series. Washington has a 3 1/2-game lead, but also the worst record of any division leader.

NL CENTRAL: This one should be fun. Milwaukee leads St. Louis by two games, with Pittsburgh another half-game behind and Cincinnati only five games out of first. Those four teams are all in play for the wild cards too.

NL WEST: The San Francisco Giants are 20-35 since June 9, and if that keeps up, they probably won't be long for this race. The Los Angeles Dodgers have a 4 1/2-game lead over their rivals to the north.

      STAT OF THE WEEK

There were enough wacky numbers in Toronto's 6-5, 19-inning win over Detroit on Sunday to fill this category for a month, but let's go with this one: Melky Cabrera of the Blue Jays reached base eight times and did not score a run.

          • Tuesday's Tip Sheet

            August 12, 2014

Yankees at Orioles – 7:05 PM EST

            Probable Pitchers:
            NYY: Greene (3-1, 2.89 ERA)
            BAL: Chen (12-4, 3.90 ERA)

Series recap: Baltimore improved to 12-0 in its last 12 games off a loss with Monday’s 11-3 rout of New York as -120 home favorites. The Yankees have dropped three straight games, while scoring just four runs in this stretch.

What to watch for: The Orioles have won seven of 10 meetings with the Yankees this season, including a 3-1 mark at Camden Yards. New York is 3-0 in Greene’s three road starts this season, while winning at Baltimore in mid-July, allowing four hits in seven scoreless innings. Baltimore owns a 5-1 record in Chen’s past six outings, while the southpaw won at Yankee Stadium in early April as a short underdog.

Tigers at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

            Probable Pitchers:
            DET: Ray (1-1, 4.70 ERA)
            PIT: Volquez (9-7, 3.70 ERA)

Series recap: Following Sunday’s 19-inning marathon loss at Toronto, Detroit expectedly came out flat in last night’s 11-6 defeat at Pittsburgh as a short favorite. The Pirates jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two innings on Monday, as Pittsburgh scored just five runs in its entire three-game series against San Diego this past weekend.

What to watch for: The Tigers own a 2-6 record so far on their current road trip, with one of those wins coming in extra innings against the Yankees and the other victory in Toronto in which Detroit rallied for three runs in the ninth inning. The Pirates are 7-1 in Volquez’s past eight outings, while Pittsburgh has grabbed four straight meetings with Detroit since last season.

Dodgers at Braves – 7:10 PM EST

            Probable Pitchers:
            LAD: Haren (9-9, 4.57 ERA)
            ATL: Minor (4-7, 5.42 ERA)

Series recap: The Dodgers scored six late runs to take care of the Braves in the series opener on Monday, 6-2 as +165 road underdogs. Los Angeles has won all four matchups with Atlanta this season, while posting a 7-1 record against the Braves since the start of the 2013 NLDS.

What to watch for: Atlanta has won five of its past seven games off a home loss, while the Braves are 3-1 in Minor’s previous four starts at Turner Field. Haren ended a five-game skid in his last outing by shutting down the Angels, 2-1 as a +140 road ‘dog, even though the Dodgers have scored two runs or less in each of his past four trips to the mound.

Red Sox at Reds – 7:10 PM EST

            Probable Pitchers:
            BOS: Kelly (0-0, 1.29 ERA)
            CIN: Latos (4-3, 3.12 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Red Sox have alternated wins and losses through the first six games of their current road swing, capped off by a 3-1 victory over the Angels on Sunday. The Reds avoided a home sweep to the Marlins by routing Miami on Sunday, 7-2 as nearly -200 favorites.

What to watch for: Boston captured the first two meetings this season with Cincinnati at Fenway Park, both by 4-3 scores. The Sox are currently on a 5-1 ‘under’ run, while compiling a 5-13 record in their past 18 games. The Reds have won four of their past five home games against American League foes, while Cincinnati owns a 9-2 record in Latos’ last 11 starts as a home favorite dating back to last season.

Athletics at Royals – 8:10 PM EST

            Probable Pitchers:
            OAK: Lester (12-7, 2.44 ERA)
            KC: Guthrie (8-9, 4.35 ERA)

Series recap: The A’s suffered consecutive losses for just the second time since the All-Star break after Monday’s 3-2 setback at Kansas City. The Royals have won three of four matchups with the A’s this month, while Kansas City is riding an eight-game winning streak to pull into first place inside the AL Central.

What to watch for: Looking past the eight-game hot streak, Kansas City owns a 16-3 record since a four-game skid coming out of the All-Star break. Guthrie scattered three hits in six scoreless innings of a 1-0 triumph at Oakland earlier this month as a hefty +200 underdog. Lester has won each of his two starts with the A’s since getting dealt by the Red Sox, while his teams are 9-1 in his previous 10 outings overall.

            • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- San Diego Padres are 14-8 since All-Star break, best record in the NL.

-- Average of 6.3 runs/game score at Petco Park in San Diego, lowest in MLB; average of 11.5 runs/game score at Coors Field in Denver, highest in majors.

-- Orioles' Bud Norris has walked leadoff hitter in 19 innings, most in MLB.

-- Tigers lost Justin Verlander (sore shoulder), got smoked 11-6 in Pittsburgh and fell out of first place in AL Central.

-- First-place Royals added Josh Willingham as a bat for the stretch run.

-- Baltimore lost Manny Machado to a sprained knee he hurt while batting.

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

              13) College sports is very big business.

Maryland was supposed to pay $52M in exit fees to leave the ACC for the Big 14 conference, but sides negotiated a deal and the final tab appears to be $31,361,788, so that’s a 39.7% discount for the Terrapins. Will be odd to see them playing Midwestern schools; the move hasn’t worked well for West Virginia in either sport, we’ll see how Maryland makes out with it.

              12) American League has a 132-109 edge in interleague play this season; this is how home field advantage in the World Series should be decided, not by who wins the All-Star Game.

              11) NFL coaches look at the second and (especially) third preseason games as dress rehearsals for the season opener. The first games are tryouts for the bottom of the depth chart; the fourth is a cash grab from season ticket holders- those games are mostly a farce. These next two weeks, the games have a little more meaning.

              10) Tyler Johnstone, Oregon’s starting left tackle, tore his ACL and is out for the year, bad news for the Ducks and their fine QB, Marcus Mariota.

              9) Indiana’s hoop team lost 109-101 to a team from Ottawa on its exhibition tour of Canada; losing doesn’t matter much, but scoring 101 points and losing is alarming, unless Tom Crean suddenly morphed into Paul Westhead, which is doubtful. Play some defense!!!!

              8) USC LB Jacob Ruffin tore his knee up and is done for the year, reducing USC’s “recruited athletes” to 65. Not sure if that means scholarship athletes or what, but Trojans are dangerously thin as they start the Steve Sarkisian era.

              7) TV ratings for the PGA Championship Sunday were the highest they’ve been in five years, good news for a CBS announce crew that was shilling heavily for the Tour Sunday, as a Tiger-less FedEx Cup slate lies ahead.

Losing Eldrick Woods would be damaging, but the sport does have a lot of great players, as Sunday showed.

              6) Anyone have a clue what the Phillies are doing? They’ve only traded one person (Roberto Hernandez) away, hardly a big star; do they really think this team can contend in 2015, or is the GM just trying to put off his inevitable firing, as the franchise slides into a down period?

Their nucleus is old and their payroll is high; a very bad combination.

              5) At the end of the Cowboy-Charger game Friday, the two QBs playing were alums of those two noted football factories, West Texas State and Southern Utah; that’s what training camp is all about, guys getting their chance to impress.

              4) Odd situation at the end of the Saints-Rams game Friday; St Louis had the ball and was going to spike the ball to kick a 48-yard FG to win but QB Austin Davis fumbled the snap before he spiked the ball, which makes the spiked pass intentional grounding, which has a 0:10 runoff and a 5-yard penalty.

Since the spike happened with 0:11 left, Rams had to rush to get the now 53-yard FG off and it missed, so the Saints won 27-26. This would’ve been a debacle had it been a regular season game, but then again, Rams would’ve had their regular long snapper in and might not have missed.

              3) Lovie Smith has already earned his paycheck for this year; Tampa Bay Bucs are sold out for the season; no blackouts!!! The Schiano era was depressing for Bucs fans; they should be better with Smith in charge.

              2) ESPN.com has a way of measuring defensive performance in baseball; according to them, the Mariners’ defense has been 110 runs better this year than last, that’s a full run per game, part of why they’ve improved and are contending for a Wild Card spot.

              1) First week of NFL exhibition games, there were 355 penalties called, 95 of which were either defensive holding, illegal contact or pass interference. Someone needs to tell these people that throwing 800 flags on the defense does not equate to better offense, just more points scored; its horrible to watch.

You want more good offensive plays? Stop calling so much offensive holding, give QB’s time to throw; then you’ll have more points scored and some good highlights to show on TV. No one, I repeat no one, pays to watch a referee throw his flag. Not even Ed Hochuli.

Thunderstorms headed for this ball park

According to DailyBaseballData.com, forecasts are calling for a 70-80 percent possibility of thunderstorms hitting Oriole Park at Camden Yards Tuesday.

The Orioles are set to host the New York Yankees Tuesday as the home team looks to further the gap atop the American League East.

Shane Green is scheduled to get the ball for the Yankees, while the O's are slated to counter with Wei-Yin Chen. The Orioles are currently -141 home favorites.

Orioles' SS J.J. Hardy, questionable Tuesday

Hardy has a sprained left thumb and has missed the last two games. X-rays were negative and he is questionable to return on Tuesday against the Yankees.

Edwin Encarnacion, Toronto - Mid Aug

Encarnacion is on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 2 strain in his right quad. He is on a rehab assignment and could rejoin the team for the series opener against the White Sox on Friday.

Under tends to follow this pitcher around

In Baltimore Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen's last six outings, the Under is 5-1. Bettors banking on low totals will hope that trend continues when the 29-year-old gets the ball against the New York Yankees in Maryland Tuesday.

The Yanks counter with Shane Green. The O's are currently -134 faves with a total of eight.

Trend shows Minor mowing down NL West clubs

The Atlanta Braves have had a tough time manufacturing W's lately, but one particular trend is working in their favor for their matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday.

Mike Minor will be on the bump for Atlanta at home. In Minor's last 15 starts against NL West clubs, the Braves are 12-3. Dan Haren gets the nod for L.A.

The Braves are presently -121 faves with an O/U of eight.

Check out this ump trend before placing your bets

Joe West will be behind home plate for Tuesday's meeting between the Texas Rangers and the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, which is bad news for Rangers backers.

In Texas' last seven games with West calling balls and strikes, the Rangers are a pitiful 0-7. Tampa is currently -132 home faves with the total set at nine.

Tigers happy to see this ump behind home plate

The Detroit Tigers have struggeld to the point where they are no longer in first place in the American League Central and are hoping that having umpire Alfonso Marquez behind home plate will change their fortunes.

The Tigers are 14-3 in their last 17 games when Marquez is calling balls and strikes and he will be doing just that when Detroit visits the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday. The Pirates are currently -120 home favorites.

Top Under umpire working the plate Tuesday

With an Over/Under record of 4-17 when he's been tasked with calling balls and strikes, you'd be hard pressed to find an umpire that has catered to Under bettors more efficiently than Kerwin Danley.

Danley is scheduled to work home plate at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves host the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday evening. Oddsmakers have tabbed the matchup with a total of eight.

Only Hal Gibson III (9-17 O/U) and Brian O'Nora (5-17 O/U) have as many games resulting in Unders and only Tony Randazzo (1-11 O/U) has a higher winning percentage for Under bettors among umpires with at least 10 games behind the plate.

According to our umpire stats database, there is an average of 5.77 runs scored per game when Danley is working the plate. That's the lowest per game total of any umpire with at least 10 games calling pitches.

                            • First-place Royals? Better believe it

                              August 12, 2014

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - When the Royals rolled out of bed Tuesday morning and glanced at the standings, they saw something that hadn't been the case since many of them were in junior high school.

Kansas City was sitting atop the AL Central and the playoffs were closer than opening day.

After they won their eighth straight game Monday night, against AL West-leading Oakland no less, the Royals assumed control of their division at the latest point in a season since 2003.

Perennial powerhouse Detroit had been relegated to second place, at least for a day, and an entire city that has been starved for winning was able to relish the moment.

''I haven't experienced anything like this, a playoff run,'' said outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who was born a year after Kansas City last made the playoffs in 1985. ''I did in the minor leagues, but it's not the same as the big leagues. It's a lot of fun.''

Indeed, the Royals have been a national laughingstock most of the past 30 years.

They lost at least 100 games four times in a particularly inglorious five-year span, and churned through six managers in a seven-year stretch. Frugal team owner David Glass was vilified by anybody who could recall the days when Kansas City was one of baseball's model franchises.

It's been a slow climb back to respectability, too.

While other clubs went on meteoric rises, general manager Dayton Moore has spent nearly a decade restoring the shine to the Royals. He rebuilt a weak farm system that has begun to spit out major league talent. He made bold trades, shipping away Cy Young winner Zack Greinke a few years ago and top prospect Wil Myers in another deal to acquire starter James Shields.

And while their long-suffering fans remained restless, progress became evident: Since winning 65 games in 2009, the club has surpassed that total each successive season.

Last year was the true watershed, an 86-win campaign that represented their best record since 1989. But the truth was that happened only after a feverish second half, which helped atone for a lousy May but never truly put Kansas City into playoff position.

This year, the Royals are the team that others are chasing.

''They seem to do this once or twice a year, go on a big run, and a lot of times it's a matter of when you catch them,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''The last couple years they've gone on streaks like this, and when you look at their club you can see why.''

Start with the pitching staff, which just might be the best in the majors right now.

While they might not have the names of the A's or Tigers - Jon Lester and Jeff Samardzija, or Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander - they have a bunch of guys who've been just as stingy: Shields has pitched to a 1.63 ERA in his last seven starts, Jeremy Guthrie and Jason Vargas have proven to be dependable veterans, and Yordano Ventura and Danny Duffy have unleashed their vast potential.

Ventura allowed just two hits in the Royals' 3-2 victory over Oakland on Monday night, while Duffy is carrying a 2.57 ERA and hasn't lost in his last five starts.

Their bullpen, anchored by All-Star closer Greg Holland, has likewise been a steel trap.

Then there's the offense, which has finally started to produce after an ugly first three months. Billy Butler is starting to resemble his All-Star vintage of a couple years ago, third baseman Mike Moustakas appears to have righted his swing after banishment to the minor leagues, and veterans such as Omar Infante and Alex Gordon have proven to be stabilizing forces.

Throw in the experience that one of the youngest teams in baseball got last year, and all of a sudden these aren't your daddy's Royals anymore - they're your grandpa's Royals, the club that was always in playoff contention in the 1970s and early `80s.

''We're out there playing and having fun,'' Butler said. ''We've kept grinding, and we don't let anything affect us. It doesn't matter who we're playing, we just play our game.''

Sure, there are still more than 40 games left in the regular season. Sure, it's possible the Royals will cool off down the stretch. And sure, anything can happen in baseball.

But at least for one sunny morning in Kansas City, the Royals were in first place.
