        MLB

        Thursday, August 7

Thursday afternoon's must read weather update

There is a couple of games on tap Thursday afternoon with weather you should keep your eye on before you place your wagers.

The Detroit Tigers travel to Yankee Stadium to face the Yankees, where there will be a nine mile per hour wind blowing out to the short porch in right field. There is also a 12 percent chance of rain.

At Coors Field in Colorado, the Rockies host the Chicago Cubs, where there is a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast. There is also a 21 percent chance of rain.

Pirates' 3B Pedro Alvarez, questionable Thursday

Alvarez has been placed on the bereavement list and has missed the last two games. He is questionable to return for Thursday against the Marlins.

Top-flight pitcher struggling against this team

Homer Bailey is quietly producing another solid year in Cincinnati, but he is facing one of his worst enemies in the Cleveland Indians Thursday. Bailey and the Reds have lost their last four games against the Tribe.

During those starts, Bailey has been chased before pitching four innings twice while allowing six hits per contest.

This umpire is sight to behold for travelling teams

Road-weary MLB teams have been taking to the field feeling a little better with Gary Cederstrom calling balls and strikes. The road team has gone 12-3 in Cederstrom's last 15 games behind home-plate.

That's good news for Boston Red Sox backers as he'll be behind the dish when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium Thursday.

Find out which pitcher is on fire for his club

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has come into his own his season, and as a result bettors backing the Mets are profiting in a big way. In the 26-year-old's last five outings, the Mets are a perfect 5-0.

He'll get the ball when New York visits the Washington Nationals in D.C. Thursday. The Nats are -139 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of seven.

Team in need of win sees helpful umpire

The Toronto Blue Jays are falling out of the American League East title picture and need a win over the Baltimore Orioles to keep pace. Luckily for the Jays, D.J. Reyburn will be behind the plate.

The Blue Jays are 5-0 in their last five games with Reyburn calling balls and strikes.

This ump has been trending towards the home team

It seems the home team has been getting the benefit of the call when Dan Iassognas has been behind home plate.

The home team is 8-1 in Iassognas' last nine games when he is calling balls and strikes and that is where he will be when the New York Mets visit the Washington Nationals Thursday afternoon.

The Nationals are currently listed as -143 home favorites.

Tigers' 1B Miguel Cabrera, doubtful Thursday

Cabrera is not expected to play Thursday against the Yankees as he will be given a routine day off.

Nationals' 3B Ryan Zimmerman, mid September

Zimmerman is on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 3 right hamstring strain. He has started rehabbing the injury and is hopeful to return in mid-September.

Rockies' SS Troy Tulowitzki, mid August

Tulowitzki has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip flexor strain. He has begun taking part in batting practices and is aiming to return around the middle of August.

                    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1-- Baltimore leads AL East by five full games.

-- Javier Baez went 4-14 in his first big league series, with three HRs, but that was at Coors Field; he makes his home debut at Wrigley Field this afternoon.

-- Kevin Durant begged out of playing for Team USA later this month in Spain; you wonder if it had anything to do with Paul George's injury last week.

-- Cubs claimed Cole Hamels off waivers, so now Phillies have to pull him back and decide if they want to trade him to Chicago-- they're fools if they do.

                    -- Nationals 5, Mets 3-- Bryce Harper hit a walk-off homer in the 13th.

-- Royals 6, Arizona 2-- Kansas City is now second Wild Card in the AL.

                    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

                    13) So the new GM of the San Diego Padres went to Cornell; good grief. Now you have to be an Ivy Leaguer to run a big league ballclub, as if that matters. By the way, the best GM in baseball didn’t go to college until offseasons during his playing career-- Billy Beane.

I think of the three smartest people I know; they went to St Francis, UAlbany and Fairleigh Dickinson, none of which are in the freakin’ Ivy League. Enough already.

                    12) Unusual that Seattle-Denver is the first preseason game, after the teams met in the Super Bowl six months ago. Due to geographic proximity, they’ll play each other most summers. Just thought it might be a TV game later this month.

                    11) Pretty cool that the Harbaugh brothers got to face each other in a more relaxed setting than a Super Bowl, as Ravens-49ers played last night. Long road trip for a preseason game. I’m guessing the family might’ve enjoyed this one a little more than when the brothers’ teams met in New Orleans 18 months ago.

                    10) Kevin Love goes to Cleveland, agrees to re-sign with Cavaliers next summer, virtually clinching that Cleveland starts the season as the favorite in the East. City of Cleveland hasn’t won a title in any sport since 1964; that could change soon.

                    9) Do you think texting has hurt people's writing skills? Have to find a teacher and ask them; there is so much shorthand on IPhones and spell check on computers, and writing is so important, just hope people's writing skills haven't eroded.

                    8) How football has changed: 26 years ago, 1988, Barry Sanders’ last six games at Oklahoma State: 218 carries (36.3/game), 1,694 yards (282.3 ypg, 7.8 ypc).

He also returned 11 kicks, six punts, but during those six games, he caught only 10 passes for 67 yards. Nowadays at most schools (except Boston College) running backs have to catch the ball out of the backfield. It lessens the amount of big hits they take and also gets them ready for the pros.

                    7) I mentioned Boston College because BC’s Andre Williams (now a Giant) didn’t catch one pass last year, in a season where he carried the ball 355 times. Not one!!! Old-school football. Giants can only hope he’s close to as good as Sanders was.

                    6) Matt Kuchar dropped out of PGA tourney with a bad back; John Huh replaced him in the field. Despite being the #6 player in the world, Kuchar’s absence didn’t cause much of a ripple; have to named Eldrick to get any publicity for that.

                    5) I’m not crazy about Little League tournament games being on TV; it’s a lot to put on 11-12 year olds. Some kid fouls up and costs his team the game, he has to live in that town for at least the next 6-7 years, maybe the rest of his life. Can be tough. Its not going to go away, because it can make for compelling TV, but to me, its just not a great idea for the kids themselves.

                    4) President of College of Charleston is under personal pressure to hire a minority basketball coach, because of the perception that he may be a racist. Charleston fired Doug Wojcik because he apparently bullied everyone in the program verbally.

President has had his picture taken in a confederate soldier’s uniform, has been quoted as being in favor of flying the Confederate flag, just the kinds of things you DON’T want if you’re trying to recruit basketball players, majority of whom are African-American.

Weird situation; the search committee that recommended a new President didn’t recommend that this guy get the job, but he got hired anyway, so the perception is Charleston will need a minority coach to offset all that on the recruiting trail.

                    3) Turns out Brian Scalabrine got ousted as a Golden State assistant coach last winter because he didn’t think Mark Jackson pushed the players hard enough and he said so; he then went to the D-League as a player development coach but didn’t like that less-glamorous lifestyle, so now Scalabrine does road games on TV for Celtics.

                    2) This time of year, there is too much media, not enough news. Every time Johnny Manziel sneezes it gets reported and then ten ex-players comment on how well he blows his nose. Thank God the exhibition games are starting so there is real news to report, real games, and we can see Manziel play football instead of rolling $20 bills in a men’s room somewhere.

                    1) We said yesterday how football coaches can lead a nomadic existence: here is how Denver coach John Fox worked his way into the NFL, the career path he took:
                    1978-- San Diego State
                    1979-- US International
                    1980-- Boise State
                    1981-- Long Beach State
                    1982-- Utah
                    1983-- Kansas
                    1984-- Iowa State
1985-- LA Express in the USFL
1986-88-- Pittsburgh....first NFL job with Steelers in 1989

Pirates' 3B Pedro Alvarez, questionable Friday

Alvarez has been placed on the bereavement list and has missed the last three games. He is questionable to return for Friday's game against the Padres.

This team has major troubles in the Bay Area

The sunshine does not bode well with the Minnesota Twins. In the Twins last six visits to Oakland, they have come away with a 0-6 record.

The Twins have been abysmal in Oakland allowing 48 runs and 67 hits in those six games. That's an average of eight runs and 11 hits per game by the Athletics.

This team has had a terrible time in Atlanta

The Washington Nationals can take a stranglehold on the National League East when they travel to Turner Field this weekend, but Atlanta has not been a good place for the Nats. The Nationals are 1-7 in their last eight at Turner Field, including dropping their last four straight.

The Nationals have only scored more than three runs twice in their past eight visits to Atlanta, compared to the six times the Braves have accomplished that.

Marlins pitcher has been quietly beaten up

The Miami Marlins have not had an amazing year on the mound, but Nathan Eovaldi may be the worst. In Eovaldi's last 12 starts the Marlins have gone 3-9.

Seven times in Eovaldi's last 12 starts, he has given up at least four runs. And they are not fluke runs, Eovaldi has given up six or more hits nine times.

American League action trending for bettors

American League action has been paying out for bettors recently. Over the past four days, AL action has an over/under record of 5-10-1 which is good for a 63 percent under rate.

There are six AL games on the slate for Friday.

This pitcher has been a hot under play on the road

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy has been a hot under play when on the road.

The under is 10-1 in Kennedy's last 11 road starts, which will be the case when he takes the mound Friday at the Pittsburgh Pirates. The total is currently set at 7.0.

Amazing under play hitting the diamond

Offense has not been the Seattle Mariners forte this season and thought that may be bad for the team, it has been great for bettors. This season when the Mariners take the field with a total of sub-7.0 they have a stunning 3-14-1 over/under record.

Hisashi Iwakuma will take the mound for the Mariners who has gone 0-3 o/u in games with totals less than 7.0.

The Mariners host the Chicago White Sox with a total of 6.5 Friday.

Scoreboards better be ready when these teams meet

When the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers meet runs tally-up. The interstate rivalry has seen the over/under go 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.

The teams have combined for 59 runs and 113 hits during those four games, which averages 11.8 runs and 22.6 hits per game.
