    MVP and Cy Young Odds

    July 28, 2014

Only two months remain in the MLB regular season as the annual award arguments are shaping up. To begin the season, Angels' outfielder Mike Trout and Pirates' outfielder Andrew McCutchen were the favorites to earn Most Valuable Player honors in their respective leagues. McCutchen captured this award in the National League in 2013, while Trout finished second behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in the American League last season.

On the mound, Max Scherzer won this honor in the AL last season, but there will likely be a new receipent in 2014, which will likely be the 2010 Cy Young winner, Seattle's Felix Hernandez. Dodgers' southpaw Clayton Kershaw is on pace to win his second straight Cy Young Award, as the L.A. ace leads the National League in earned run average.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

        13) Indiana Pacers owe Paul George roughly $79M over the next five seasons; he is their best player, obviously. George broke two bones in his right leg Friday night during a Team USA intrasquad scrimmage at UNLV. Not sure of all the ramifications of this injury, but somebody has some 'splainin' to do, since a basket support where George got hurt is closer to the baseline than in NBA arenas.

        12) Derrick Rose has been paid $34M by the Bulls the last two seasons, while he played in ten games, but he is playing for Team USA. Why is this OK? Doesn't an NBA team have the right to veto its players playing? Don't they owe it to their fans to protect the players they pay millions of dollars to? Apparently not.

        11) Former NBA Commissioner David Stern recently had a hip replacement; his successor, Adam Silver, now has a giant headache in Indiana.

        10) Former UTEP/Auburn hoop coach Tony Barbee is back with John Calipari at Kentucky, taking Rod Strickland's place- the former NBA guard went to USF with Orlando Antigua.

        9) Maryland recruit Trayvon Reed won't be admitted to the school after being arrested for assault, petty theft and resisting arrest. Reed is 7-foot-1 and was a top 100 recruit this spring-- he'll find a home somewhere, for sure.

        8) Sergio Garcia shot a 61 in Akron Friday, leads by three strokes there. Guy shot a ridiculous 27 on the back nine-- tremendous.

        7) Houston Astros are 45-65, 22 games out of first place, but for some reason are raising ticket prices next season. Astros have improved, but only because they've been so pathetic the last couple years. Takes a lot of onions......

        6) Anthony Ranaudo did really well in his MLB debut for Boston Friday, but he is rumored to be headed back to AAA, making room for Joe Kelly with the Red Sox. Ranaudo is an LSU alum who will be in a big league rotation next year, for sure.

        5) Colorado Rockies have used 14 different starting pitchers; they're 38-43 in games when the top six starters pitched, 6-22 when they used another starter.

        4) Angels have done a great job rebuilding their bullpen; what was a sore spot early this season has now allowed only one run in its last 28.1 innings.

        3) There are 27 bones, 123 ligaments in a human hand. Just thought you'd like to know. You can learn a lot watching commercials on The Golf Channel.

        2) Want to feel old? MTV turned 33 years old this weekend.

        1) Good news on my friend's daughter who was stuck in Israel; she is now safe in Greece, will be reunited with her family here Monday in Chicago.

Preview: Yankees (55-52) at Red Sox (48-60)
                    Game: 2
                    Venue: Fenway Park
                    Date: August 02, 2014 4:05 PM EDT

The starting rotations of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are looking like shells of what might have been projected for each club for the beginning of August.

The Red Sox stripped theirs down by choice prior to the trade deadline, while the Yankees have been forced to restructure due to injuries.

Two of the beneficiaries of those circumstances will face off Saturday as the clubs continue a three-game series at Fenway Park with Boston's big return, slugger Yoenis Cespedes, likely to make his Red Sox debut.

New York's Shane Greene is the one with an AL East chase partially on his shoulders, while Allen Webster is trying to prove himself in Boston's rebuilding process.

Greene (2-1, 3.28 ERA) has been a bit shakier in his last two starts after arriving in the rotation with some impressive results. The right-hander has a 5.73 ERA and 0-1 record over his last two starts, allowing three runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings of Sunday's 5-4 loss to Toronto.

"I felt pretty good," Greene, who didn't receive a decision, told MLB's official website. "I made some good pitches. I've just got to be better later in the game."

Greene's first major league appearance came in Boston out of the bullpen. In one-third of an inning, he walked three and was charged with three unearned runs.

His two starts away from Yankee Stadium have been his best work with a 1.35 ERA.

Webster made his season debut Sunday after Boston shipped Jake Peavy to San Francisco. The right-hander limited Tampa Bay to two runs and three hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 3-2 victory for his second big league win.

"My body felt really good," Webster said. "My command wasn't as there as I wanted it to be, but I made the pitches when I needed."

He threw an inning of relief against the Yankees on Sept. 15 and surrendered a run, hit and walk.

Cespedes was acquired before Thursday's deadline in a deal that sent Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to Oakland. He was held out of the lineup in Friday's 4-3 series-opening win.

The outfielder is a .313 hitter against the Yankees and .250 hitter at Fenway without a home run in 24 at_bats, but the Red Sox are hoping his right-handed bat and a 310-foot porch in left field results in plenty of power.

"I know I have some power," Cespedes said. "I can't predict how many home runs I'm going to hit, because when I'm out there I'm not looking to hit a home run, I'm just looking to make hard contact."

Without him, the Red Sox (49-60) won for just the second time in 10 games, over which they've been outscored 59-22.

Dustin Pedroia went 2 for 4 for a third straight game, and Will Middlebrooks returned for Boston after missing 67 games with a broken finger. The Red Sox could now be without catcher David Ross, who exited the game because of ongoing plantar fasciitis problems.

The Yankees (55-53) have lost five of six and fallen six games back of Baltimore in the AL East. Derek Jeter and Carlos Beltran homered in the opener.

"We've got to win games this time of year," said third baseman Chase Headley, who is 0 for 7 over two games after hitting safely in his first eight with the Yankees. "That's where the frustration comes."

While Beltran is hitting .448 with three homers and eight RBIs over an eight-game hitting streak, Jeter is batting .361 against the Red Sox in nine games this season and .373 over his last 15 at Fenway.

Preview: Royals (56-51) at Athletics (66-41)
                      Game: 2
                      Venue: O.co Coliseum
                      Date: August 02, 2014 4:05 PM EDT

Jon Lester walked through the Oakland clubhouse doors to quite a greeting, from the snappy, patriotic marching tune blaring from the sound system to the handshakes and hellos from every corner.

And even the familiar friendly face of his former pitching coach in Boston, Curt Young.

Lester (10-7, 2.52 ERA) arrived with fanfare prior to facing the visiting Kansas City Royals on Saturday in his debut for baseball's winningest team: the small-budget Athletics (66-42), who are counting on him to be an instant ace on a rotation full of No. 1 starters and help extend their one-game lead over the surging Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.

'Obviously leaving Boston after being there for so long is at times difficult, but to be going from a team that hasn't done so well this year to a team with best record in baseball is pretty exciting,' he said. 'Fortunately I've got a few faces here that I recognize and know pretty well, so it should make the transition pretty smooth.'

The All-Star left-hander, 4-0 with a 1.07 ERA over his last eight outings, looks to help his new team bounce back after the A's dropped their second straight contest, 1-0 to the Royals (56-52) on Friday.

For Lester, just knowing where he will be for the remainder of the season was comforting a day after being traded along with outfielder Jonny Gomes for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. On Saturday, 10,000 Cespedes T-shirts will still be distributed.

'I'm a marketing department's worst nightmare,' A's general manager Billy Beane said.

While the A's need an offensive boost after totaling one run and nine hits in the last two games, Lester is committed to doing his part every fifth day for a franchise poised for another October playoff run if things keep going this well over the season's final two months.

'Kind of the anxiety of it, not really knowing where you're going to be and having a family makes it difficult,' Lester said. 'To leave someplace I've called home for eight years that made it a little bit hard, but like I said, I'm happy to be here and happy to be a part of this and hope to contribute.'

An A's team Lester praises for being 'full of energy, they play the game the right way,' is hardly one he considers to be in need of much help the way this season has gone so far in a much-improved AL West.

Yet Oakland's brass - and the players, too - believe the addition of Lester gives them an edge to not only make sure the A's reach the playoffs but to give them the best chance of advancing following consecutive five-game division series defeats to the Detroit Tigers.

'Not only is this guy well decorated in climbing the totem pole of left-handers in the game and left-handers in the postseason in the game,' Gomes said. 'You guys don't get to see the work ethic, what goes into goes into his success, what goes into his championship pedigree, something I didn't know on the other side. It truly is a breath of fresh air to know the best pitcher on the team is also the hardest working guy on the team.'

Lester plans to complement what already is working so well.

'These guys have been in the playoffs before, they've made runs before,' he said. 'It's not going to be anything new for a lot of these here. Hopefully with adding us we can maybe add a little more experience and on the further side of it, going deeper.

'I wouldn't consider it pressure. These guys expect to go to the playoffs every year now. It's a good atmosphere to have.'

Lester has no idea what's next beyond the 2014 season as his contract is due to expire - and he still isn't ruling out a return to the Red Sox.

'Any time you negotiate with a team and it doesn't go the way everybody wants, I think there's always going to be disappointment,' Lester said. 'That's not to say the effort wasn't there on both sides to try to get something done.

"But my time in Boston is something that I'll always remember, always cherish, from 2002 to (Thursday). Nothing but great things to say about the organization, the way they treated me, the way they treated my family through the good times and the bad times. They were always consistent. I thanked them personally (Thursday) for everything they've done. We'll see where that relationship goes later on. Right now, I'm an `A.''

He allowed four hits and struck out eight in eight innings of a 6-0 victory over the Royals on July 20 to improve to 7-3 with a 1.43 ERA in 11 starts against them.

While Lester makes his Oakland debut, Jason Vargas (8-4, 3.31) returns to the Kansas City rotation after missing almost a month following an appendectomy. The left-hander went 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in July, and yielded his only two runs in those starts over 5 2-3 innings of a 4-3 loss at Tampa Bay on July 8.

"He's a very good pitcher and we need him," teammate Bruce Chen told MLB's official website.

Raul Ibanez homered Friday to help the Royals win their third straight and eighth in 10 contests.

The left-handed hitting Ibanez is 7 for 14 in his last six games, but considering he's 1 for 37 versus lefties, likely won't be in the lineup against Lester.

Shortstop Alcides Escobar, meanwhile, has five hits and two walks in his last 12 plate appearances versus Lester.

                              Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- If you bet the Astros in the "first five innings" bet every game, you would be 54-44-13 this year. Astros' record is 46-65; thats how bad their bullpen is.

-- Mariners haven't scored in the first five innings in seven of Felix Hernandez' last ten starts.

-- Only 30 of 62 golfers in World Golf tournament in Akron this weekend are from United States.

-- David Ortiz is 7-69 vs rookie pitchers this year; he was 34-70 last year.

-- A's have batted around 24 times this season, most in major leagues.

-- Detroit Tigers scored in every inning last nite; that doesn't happen a lot.

                              **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

                              13) I was at the Pro Footballl Hall of Fame in 2001, to see Jack Youngblood and Jackie Slater get inducted; Rams played in the exhibition game that year, so I went to the open practice teams had back then. One of the players I met was Rams' DB Aeneas Williams; we talked for a minute about his chances of getting inducted in the Hall someday-- he's a good guy, was excited to see him get inducted last night.

Will be even better next year, when Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner get in.

                              12) Seven players were inducted into Pro Football's Hall of Fame; four of the seven didn't play Division I-A football and one of the three who did was a punter.

                              11) Jon Lester won his first start for Oakland; they showed the last out of his 2008 no-hitter against the Royals. Last out was made by Alberto Callaspo, who is now his teammate with the A's and had a huge hit in Saturday's win.

                              10) Red Sox plan on using Yoenis Cespedes in right field; tough sun field late in the day. Guess they figure his arm would be a waste in Fenway's short left field.

                              9) Weird baseball schedule Saturday; only two games at 4:00, with 13 nite games. Strange not having any games on TV early in the afternoon.

                              8) Armadillo World HQ has a new 48-inch flatscreen, which makes Channel 720 on DirecTV a must-watch; eight screens at once, can keep track of a lot more stuff. Tremendously tremendous.

                              7) Arizona's star 1B Paul Goldschmidt was supposed to get Friday off, but when the game got ugly late, he entered the game on a double-switch and batted in the 9th inning, when he got drilled on his hand and broke a bone in the hand.

Diamondbacks drilled Pirate star Andrew McCutchen Saturday, even though it was obvious Goldschmidt's plunking was an accident; Pirates outscored Snakes 15-2 in 8th/9th innings last two nights. Arizona's season is a disaster. .

                              6) Famous actress June Lockhart (Lassie, Lost in Space) recently turned 89; she was at the Dodger game last night, still in her seat in the 10th inning. She has already been in one movie this year and is filming another-- good for her!!!

                              5) Evan Longoria DH'd Saturday after he banged up his knee Friday in a collision with a lazy umpire behind first base after Longoria's infield hit. Longoria got thrown out going to second on the play with the Rays down 5-3, not a great moment.

                              4) Astros' 2B Jose Altuve scored from first base last night after an errant pickoff throw, then another error on a throw to third. Straight outta Little League.

                              3) There is a new McDonald's near my house; it is tremendous; more drive-thru area and they actually trained the kids who worked there!!! Got thru very quickly despite there being four cars in front of me. Well done........

                              2) Was little bit sad to watch the golf Saturday and hear Ian Baker-Finch hint that Eldrick Woods had given up because he wasn't contending. Forget exactly which euphemism he used, but something to effect that he had lost interest. This was a guy who was unrivaled in his sport and now is just another guy-- if you were owner of a golf-related company, would you pay Woods to endorse your products?

                              1) Jackasses at FOX/ESPN will wonder why ratings for baseball playoff games are down this fall; it is because they insist on showing every Bronx-Boston game, even though the two teams have a combined record of 105-114. Meanwhile the good teams go largely ignored; you know, teams that will be playing in October.

Just for the record, when the Royals-A's game ended Saturday, the game in Boston was in the top of 7th inning. Mediocre teams playing sloppy baseball; awesome.
