  • CFL Betting Notes - Week 20

    November 4, 2014

We have reached the final week of the 2014 CFL regular season and a few of last week’s results have set the stage for a fantastic finish that will fill in any of the remaining pieces of the postseason puzzle.

Hamilton stayed in the playoff hunt in the East with a 34-25 victory over Ottawa last Friday night as a seven-point road favorite. The total in that game went OVER the 43 ½-point closing line. In a case of too little, too late Winnipeg ended its season on a high note with a stunning 18-13 victory against Calgary on Saturday as a 10-point road underdog with the total staying UNDER the 50 ½-point closing line.

Saturday’s other game was a 37-3 victory by Edmonton as a 5 ½-point home favorite against British Columbia. The total stayed UNDER in that contest against a closing line of 48. Montreal earned a spot in the Grey Cup Playoffs by knocking-off East rival Toronto 17-14 on Sunday as a slight 1 ½-point home favorite to close things out in Week 19. The total in that game stayed UNDER the 50-point closing line.

    Friday, Nov. 7

Ottawa (2-15 SU, 6-10-1 ATS) at Toronto (7-10 SU, 6-11 ATS)

    Point-spread: OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

Ottawa continues to play for pride in its inaugural season in the CFL as the RedBlacks and it would love nothing more than to squash its division rival’s slim playoff hopes with a straight-up win on Friday night. While they did fail to cover their last time out, the RedBlacks have been a tough out down the stretch with a 4-3-1 record ATS in their last eight games.

Toronto not only lost a game it desperately needed to win, it may have also lost its quarterback Ricky Ray for the season finale after getting injured in last week’s contest. This would be a tremendous loss after he led the CFL this season by a wide margin in both total passing yards (4,595) and touchdown throws (28).

    Betting Trends

One of Ottawa’s two SU wins this season came against Toronto in an 18-17 victory in Week 3 as a one-point home underdog. The total in that game stayed UNDER the closing 52-point line. The Argonauts are just 1-6 ATS as favorites this season.

Calgary (14-3 SU, 11-5-1 ATS) at British Columbia (9-8 SU, 9-8 ATS)

    Point-spread: BC -1 ½
    Total: 46

    Game Overview

You cannot put all that much weight on last week’s loss to Winnipeg considering that the Stampeders had already locked-up the top spot in the West Division a few weeks back. They will probably approach this game in the same cautious fashion to keep everyone as healthy as possible for a run to this year’s Grey Cup title.

At the other end of the spectrum there should be some serious concern in BC after last week’s dismal performance against a team it could very well face in the opening round of the West Division Playoffs. Kevin Glenn and John Beck combined for a total of just 95 yards passing in the loss to Edmonton. The Lions could not run the ball either with a total of 66 yards on the ground.

    Betting Trends

The Stampeders have won 17 of the last 25 meetings SU, yet they are just 1-4 SU in their last five trips to BC Place. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of their last 14 road games and it has stayed UNDER in seven of the Lions’ last nine games at home.

    Saturday, Nov. 8

Montreal (9-8 SU, 9-7-1 ATS) at Hamilton (8-9 SU, 8-9 ATS)

    Point-spread: Hamilton -3
    Total: 45 ½

    Game Overview

Montreal needs this win to secure a first-round bye as East Division champs and it is hard to see the Alouettes coming up short after posting an 8-1 SU record in their last nine games with a profitable 7-1-1 record ATS. The total has now stayed UNDER in five of their last six games behind a defense that has not allowed more than 17 points in any of those contests.

The Tiger-Cats can still win the East with a win on Saturday, or they can miss the playoffs altogether with a loss combined with a Toronto win. They have also staged an impressive run during the second half of the season with six SU wins in their last eight games and a 5-3 record ATS. The total went OVER against Ottawa last week after staying UNDER in eight of Hamilton’s previous 10 games.

    Betting Trends

Montreal has lost four of its last six games against Hamilton SU overall and it is 0-5 SU in its last five road games against the Tiger-Cats. However, the Alouettes have managed to cover in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in five of the last seven games played in Hamilton.

Edmonton (12-5 SU, 12-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan (9-8 SU, 6-11 ATS)

    Point-spread: OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

Edmonton is another team that is in position to rest some starters this week after wrapping up home field advantage for the opening round of the playoffs with last week’s win. The Eskimos have been the most profitable team to wager on in the CFL going back to mid-September with a perfect 7-0 record ATS. They went 5-2 SU during this seven-game run and the total stayed UNDER in five of their last six games.

The Roughriders are coming off a bye in what has been an extremely rough ride down the stretch. They have just one SU victory in their last seven games and they have failed to cover ATS in all seven contests. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games. Amazingly enough, Saskatchewan has long since secured a spot in the postseason and it can still end-up as the No. 3 team in the East with a win and a BC loss.

    Betting Trends

Edmonton is 8-4 SU in the last 12 meetings and it has covered ATS in the last five games between the two. The total in this series has gone OVER in 11 of the last 16 games played in Saskatchewan.

        • CFL Betting Notes - Semifinals

          November 11, 2014

The CFL closed things out with a bang in Week 20 of the regular season to set-up some very interesting matchups in this Sunday’s opening round of the 2014 Grey Cup Playoffs.

Last Friday, Toronto did its part by defeating Ottawa 23-5 as a 6 ½-point home favorite with the total staying UNDER the 45 ½-point line, but Hamilton’s 29-15 victory over Montreal the following day as a 3 ½-point home favorite not only knocked the Argonauts out of the playoffs, it sealed the East Division title and first round bye for the Tiger-Cats. The total in that game stayed UNDER the closing 44-point line.

In the first of two final regular season games in the West Division, Calgary hammered British Columbia 33-16 as a 1 ½-point road underdog with the total going OVER the 49-point line. This past Saturday, Saskatchewan secured the third seed in the West with a 24-17 victory against Edmonton as a 1 ½-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER the 41-point closing line in that contest.

          Sunday, Nov. 16

British Columbia (9-9 SU, 9-9 ATS) at Montreal (9-9 SU, 9-8-1 ATS)

          Point-spread: Montreal -2 ½
          Total: 45

          Game Overview

The Lions enter the playoffs as a cross-over team from the West Division. They will have to dig deep for some momentum in this game after stumbling down the stretch to a 2-5 straight-up record in their last seven games. BC was only slight better against the spread at 3-4 and the total stayed UNDER in four of its last six games.

Kevin Glenn is expected to get the start for the Lions at quarterback, but Travis Lulay has been placed on the active roster for Sunday’s game. While Glenn has certainly been able to rack-up the passing yards this season with 3,918, which is the second-highest total in the league, he has also tossed a CFL-high 17 interceptions. This includes two in this past Friday’s loss to Calgary.

Montreal’s strong performance down the stretch ended on a bitter note in last week’s loss to Hamilton as it cost the team the East title as well as a crucial first round bye in the playoffs. None the less, the Alouettes finished the regular season with a 6-1 SU record in their last seven games and a highly profitable 5-1-1 mark ATS. The total stayed UNDER in six of their final seven games.

Much of Montreal’s second half success could be attributed to the play of Jonathan Crompton as the team’s starting quarterback, but you also have to give a ton of credit to a defense that did not allow more than 17 points a game in the team’s recent six-game winning streak.

          Betting Trends

The Lions have covered ATS in 18 of their last 25 games against Montreal, but they have lost eight of their last nine road games in this matchup SU. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six meetings in Montreal.

These two split the season series with the home team winning both SU and ATS. The total stayed UNDER in both games.

Saskatchewan (10-8 SU, 7-11 ATS) at Edmonton (12-6 SU, 12-6ATS)

          Point-spread: Edmonton OFF
          Total: OFF

          Game Overview

Saskatchewan snapped a five-game SU losing streak with last week’s victory over the Eskimos and it was the first time it covered ATS in its last eight games. It was just the second time the total stayed UNDER in its last five games. The Roughriders’ slide can be directly attributed to the loss of starting quarterback Darian Durant. With him under center, they had jumped-out to a 8-2 SU start this season.

In his place, Saskatchewan has turned to Tino Sunseri as well as Kerry Joseph to lead this offense, but no matter who has lined-up in Durant’s place, the results have been mediocre at best. Durant is actually listed as questionable for Sunday’s game, but the most encouraging thing about this past Saturday’s win was the 194 yards the Roughriders gained on the ground in that game.

The Eskimos have clearly been the second-best team in the CFL this season behind Calgary. They also started fast with a 7-1 SU record in their first eight games and they won the games they needed to down the stretch with a 5-3 SU record in their last eight contests. Bettors also prospered during this run with a 7-1 record ATS in their last eight games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games.

Injury concerns at the quarterback position continue to plague Edmonton and while Matt Nichols was able to go in last week’s game, Mike Reilly remains questionable for this Sunday with a lingering foot injury. Reilly threw for 3,327 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 64.6 percent of his throws, while Nichols added another 1,014 yards and four scores behind a slightly lower completion percentage of 62.3.

          Betting Trends

The Eskimos have won 18 of their last 23 home games SU against the Roughriders and they are 4-1 ATS at home in the last five meetings. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in Edmonton.

These two West Division rivals met three times this season with the Eskimos holding a 2-1 edge both SU and ATS. The total stayed UNDER in all three games.

          • CFL Betting Notes - Finals

            November 18, 2014

The CFL 2014 Grey Cup Playoffs got underway this past Sunday with the Division Semifinals. In the East, Montreal made a bold statement that it is ready for a title run with a 50-17 pasting of British Columbia as a three-point home favorite. The Alouettes took the total OVER on their own with a closing line of 44 ½.

It was not nearly as easy, but Edmonton also covered as a 7 ½-point home favorite in the West with an 18-10 victory against Saskatchewan in Sunday’s other division semifinal game. The total in that one stayed well UNDER the 45-point closing line.

            Sunday, Nov. 23

Montreal Alouettes (10-9 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-9 SU, 9-9 ATS)

            Point-spread: Hamilton -3 ½
            Total: 47

            Game Overview

It was not all that long ago when Montreal had some major struggles finding the end zone, but that was hardly the case against the Lions its last time out. All told, six different players scored a touchdown and while quarterback Jonathan Crompton only threw for 155 yards he made everyone count by completing 66.7 percent of his 21 throws for two scores.

Montreal’s dramatic turnaround from a disastrous 1-5 start both straight-up and against the spread has resulted in a 7-1 SU record in its last eight contests with a profitable 6-1-1 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in six of its previous seven games prior to going OVER against BC.

Hamilton is another team that overcame a slow start to make its way to a second-straight appearance in the East Division title game. The Tiger-Cats posted just one SU victory in their first seven games, but they started to turn things around in Week 12 following a 38-31 loss to Montreal as 1 ½-point road favorites. From that point on, Hamilton won seven of its next nine games while going 6-3 ATS. The total stayed UNDER in seven of those games.

The biggest win of this run came in the final week of the regular season when it beat Montreal 29-15 as a four-point home favorite. Zach Collaros was dead-on in that game; completing 20-of-28 attempts for 207 yards and a score. Nic Grigsby had a good day running the ball with 93 yards and a score on 19 carries.

            Betting Trends

The Alouettes are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 East Division games and they are 5-1 ATS in their last six trips to the division finals. The total has stayed UNDER in 14 of their last 17 road games.

The Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a SU win, but just 2-5 ATS in their last seven playoff games. The total has stayed UNDER in 17 of their last 21 games played at home.

Head-to-head in this matchup, the home team has won the last nine meetings SU and Montreal has a 5-1 edge ATS in the last six meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five games.

Edmonton Eskimos (13-6 SU, 13-6ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (15-3 SU, 12-5-1 ATS)

            Point-spread: Calgary -6 ½
            Total: 48 ½

            Game Overview

Edmonton has had its injury issues at quarterback down the stretch, but the return of Mike Reilly to the lineup against the Roughriders had to be a welcomed sight. He only put the ball up eight times in this past Sunday’s win, but he completed six of the passes for 53 yards. Matt Nichols started the game, but he was pulled in favor of Reilly.

The Eskimos bring some solid momentum into this game with a 4-1 record both SU and ATS in their last five contests and the total has stayed UNDER in all five games. Edmonton’s defense has really risen to the occasion during this run by holding teams to an average of just 13 points a game.

There is no doubt that Calgary did indeed stampede its way through the 2014 CFL regular season and if you throw out a meaningless loss in Week 19 once the West Division title was already in hand, it only suffered two SU losses in its first 16 games.

The Stampeders led the CFL in scoring with an average of 28.4 points a game and it rolled-up a combined 95 points in three previous victories against Edmonton this season. They covered the spread each time and the total stayed UNDER in the first two meetings this season. The potent combination of Bo Levi Mitchell throwing the ball and Jon Cornish running it has led the way all season long.

            Betting Trends

The Eskimos are 5-1 ATS in their last six West Division games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games in the postseason. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games on the road.

The Stampeders are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record and they are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS win. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six playoff games at home.

Calgary swept the three-game season series SU to extend its winning streak against its division rival to 10 games. It is also 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of those games.

            • Grey Cup Preview

              November 25, 2014

CFL Grey Cup Championship Betting Preview It took a long and grueling 20 weeks of the regular season and two rounds of playoff games, but the stage has finally been set for this Sunday’s Grey Cup Championship between the East Champion Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the West’s Calgary Stampeders.

The Tiger-Cats punched their ticket to a second-straight appearance in the CFL title game with Sunday’s 40-24 romp over Montreal as three-point home favorites. The total in that game easily went OVER the 46 ½-point closing line. Calgary clinched the West Division title and a trip to British Columbia for Sunday’s title game by running all over Edmonton 43-18 as a 6.5-point home favorite in the second half of this past Sunday’s CFL Division Finals double-header. The total in that contest went OVER as well with a closing line of 48 ½.

              Sunday, Nov. 30

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-9 SU, 10-9 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (16-3 SU, 13-5-1 ATS)

              Point-spread: Calgary -8
              Total: 52

              Game Overview

Any bettor that had the guts to stick with the Tiger-Cats after a 2-7 straight-up start in the first half of the season that yielded a 3-6 record against the spread was rewarded down the stretch with a 6-2 record both SU and ATS in their last eight games. They had to get past a surging Montreal team twice to get to this point with a Week 20 victory SU and ATS that clinched the East Division regular season title and a win last Sunday that clinched a spot in the 2014 Grey Cup.

Hamilton owes much of its current success to the vastly improved play of quarterback Zach Collaros. He had his issues taking care of the ball at times with 15 touchdown throws verse nine interceptions, but was able to come up big when his team needed it the most. This past Sunday against the Alouettes, he went a very efficient 18-for-27 for 199 yards while adding a key 19 yards on the ground on three carries. Hamilton’s leading receiver this season has been Luke Tasker with 72 catches for 937 yards and five touchdowns and Collaros was actually the team’s second leading rusher with 328 yards on 57 attempts.

Calgary got out of the gates quickly this season with a 4-0 SU start (3-1 ATS) and it never looked back with 12 more SU victories in its next 15 games. The Stampeders were clearly the class of the CFL this season behind an offense that averaged a league-high 28.4 points a game complementing a defense that held opposing teams to just 19.3 points. Even in the Stampeders’ three losses this season they were in a position to two of those games. The combined spread in the final score of those three setbacks was just 22 points with 16 of them coming in a late September loss to Montreal.

The two biggest playmakers on this team have been quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and running back Jon Cornish. Mitchell ended the regular season ranked fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (3,389), but more importantly, he completed 63.3 percent of his 417 attempts while tossing 22 touchdowns against eight interceptions. Cornish has established himself as one of the top backs in the CFL and this season was no exception with a league-high 1,082 yards and five scores on 139 carries.

              Betting Trends

The Tiger-Cats have covered ATS in their last four games following a SU win and the total has gone OVER in seven of their last 10 postseason games.

The Stampeders are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a SU winning record, but just 2-6-1 ATS in their last 10 playoff games. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six games in the playoffs.

Head-to-head in this matchup, Calgary has won the last six games SU including both meetings this season by a combined 13 points. Hamilton has a slight 3-2 edge ATS in the last five games and the total has stayed UNDER in the last four games between the two.

                Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Calgary Stampeders (-9, 52.5)

The Calgary Stampeders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats meet at BC Place Stadium on Sunday to determine the 102nd Grey Cup champion. Calgary is looking for its first title since 2008 after tying a franchise record with 15 regular-season victories. The Stampeders had no trouble defeating the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Division final and were 8-1 on the road during the season.

Hamilton scored 40 points in its East Division final victory over the Montreal Alouettes - more than it scored in any of its regular-season games. The Tiger-Cats won most of their games at their new home stadium and struggled to win on the road, going 2-7. Hamilton is making its second consecutive Grey Cup appearance and looking for its first title since 1999.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw another four touchdown passes last week despite being sacked three times and also added a rushing score. Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes has been dealing with a foot injury but played against Edmonton, bolstering Calgary’s fearsome pass rush.

Third-year head coach Austin in third Grey Cup

When the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders take the field in Vancouver and play for the 102nd Grey Cup, Ti-Cats head coach Kent Austin will have coached in his third championship game in three seasons as a coach.

Austin won the Grey Cup as a first-year coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2007. He then went the NCAA to become the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss (2008-2010) and then head coach at Cornell (2009-2012) before returning to Canada. He took over in Hamilton last season and led the Tabbies to the Grey Cup, where they lost to his former team, Saskatchewan.

Austin is 1-1 straight up in his Grey Cup games, but has yet to cover the spread in the big game at 0-2 ATS. The Ti-Cats are being offered anywhere from +7.5 to +9.
