  • Lynx-Mercury Preview

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Western Conference finals will be a dream matchup: the WNBA's top two teams, with the league MVP, defensive player of the year and coach of the year all on the floor at the same time.

Both teams had long winning streaks -- and each stopped the other's respective run.

The Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury also will be meeting for the third time in four years in the Western Conference finals in what's become an intriguing rivalry.

"This game is perfect for that, it's perfect for everyone to get excited for, for both teams to get excited for, it's no doubt going to be fun," Minnesota's Maya Moore told reporters after practice on Wednesday before her team headed to Phoenix for Game 1 of the Western finals on Friday night.

About the only drawback is that it comes in the conference finals, the penultimate stage of the playoffs.

"The league is talking about it, meaning the league office," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "They're excited about seeing their two best teams on display. Everybody's hopeful about just an unbelievable series, you know? There's a lot of great players out there."

The Lynx swept the Mercury in the 2011 and 2013 conference finals on their way to winning WNBA titles. Minnesota has reached the final round for three straight years.

"It's just great players all across the board, great matchups all across the board, and at some point it's just pride," said Minnesota's Seimone Augustus. "Pride is on the line, and you have to be the one that's basically deflating and dominating the other player in that aspect."

But Phoenix, which won three of four from Minnesota during the regular season, is quick to point out that the 2014 version of the Mercury is not the same as 2013.

"We are a different team, they are a different team, they are probably better than they were last year," said Diana Taurasi, who finished second to Moore in the MVP voting. "We have our hands full."

Only four of the regulars on the 2014 squad played against Minnesota a year ago and one of those has had a breakout year -- center Brittney Griner.

Griner, who was fifth in the MVP voting, earned defensive player of the year honors by securing the middle for Phoenix, blocking a league-record 129 shots and being the second-best shooter in the league.

"Anybody can put up points but keeping the other team from scoring, that's what wins games," Griner said. "This year we have been playing a lot of defense."

The other major difference is the leadership of Coach of the Year Sandy Brondello -- who is in her first year at the helm in Phoenix. Her emphasis on defense -- and spreading the ball around on the offensive end -- was embraced by the group of veterans and younger players this season.

"We have been going into every game with a clear-cut (defensive) scheme of what we want to do," Taurasi said. "Do we do it every time? Probably not. But we do it enough times where we've made it difficult for opponents to score. That's how you get to the end, by making other teams work really hard for their baskets."

    Brondello agreed, especially about Moore.

"No open looks, don't have too many breakdowns," Brondello said. "We strive to be perfect, we're always going to be striving, so, if we don't execute the schemes, do the most aggressive thing. We know what Maya's tendencies are, so let's try and limit them."

The Lynx, 25-9 during the regular season, come to Phoenix off a sweep of San Antonio in the first round, albeit by a total of nine points.

The Mercury, who entered the postseason with a WNBA-record number of wins at 29-5, had a tough time with Los Angeles in the opener, needing some last-minute free throws to win by three. Then they blew out the Sparks on Sunday to eliminate Los Angeles for the second straight year.

In any other year, Minnesota would have been the class of the league. Moore won the MVP by scoring nearly 24 points a game and grabbing eight rebounds a game, hitting 48 percent of her shots.

Reeve said she was trying not to over-scheme.

"This time of the year it's really about players making plays and coaches kind of just getting out of the way," Reeve said. "Sometimes if coaches have too much time we'll screw it up by overthinking things and getting players all twisted. It's really going to be about whoever . is on their game."

        • Sky-Fever Preview

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana coach Lin Dunn's impending retirement isn't adding extra motivation for the Fever to win the Eastern Conference finals.

Although they'd like to send the Hall of Fame coach off on a high note with a WNBA championship, remembering the feeling of winning the 2012 title is enough incentive. On Saturday, the Fever open the Eastern Conference finals at home against the Chicago Sky.

"I think right now we just want to win another championship," Shavonte Zellous said. "Yeah, it would be nice to send coach out on a good note, but we also want to do it for ourselves."

Dunn announced before the season her plan to step away from coaching after 44 years in the college and professional ranks. She's not even contemplating her retirement.

"I don't think about it at all," said Dunn, a Tennessee native. "I don't think about ending my career. All I think about is the first four minutes of the next game, and I don't think past that."

The Fever, who swept the Washington Mystics in the semifinals, topped Chicago 3-2 in the regular-season series.

However, the Sky has a scoring threat that the Fever hasn't seen much of this season. Elena Delle Donne scored 23 points against Indiana in the season opener before missing 18 games with a recurrence of Lyme disease.

She came off the bench in the final game of a five-game series on Aug. 16. The Fever beat Chicago 71-67 to prevent the Sky from clinching the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

On Tuesday, Delle Donne scored 17 of her 34 points in the fourth quarter and hit the game-winning basket to cap the Sky's 20-point rally to beat the Atlanta Dream 81-80 and advance to the conference finals.

"I think that game showed us that, mostly, there's times in a game things aren't going to go right," Delle Donne said. "You have to kind of take the blow and get back out there and do your best. It was definitely a learning point for us, and I think also a confidence booster as to no matter how much we're down, we can always come back."

Other than that, Indiana and Chicago are more than familiar with each other, dating back to the conference semifinals last season. The Fever swept the Sky in two games, and Delle Donne said it still gnaws at her.

Tamika Catchings, the 13-year Indiana veteran, averaged 24 points in two playoff games against the Mystics. She agreed the teams know each other well.

"The biggest challenge, for both teams probably, is that we've faced each other so many times," Catchings said. "(It's) just staying focused on the defensive scheme that we have, and 40 minutes of just playing hard and playing smart."

                      • Mercury-Lynx Preview

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Phoenix Mercury did something in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals that no other WNBA team has been able to do all season long.

                        They stopped Maya Moore.

Pressuring her on the perimeter with DeWanna Bonner while Brittney Griner prowled the paint, Moore had nowhere to go. The league MVP was just 3 for 9 for nine points in the 85-71 loss in Phoenix, the first time all season Moore has been held to single-digits in scoring.

"I thought that Phoenix, in typical fashion, their team defense was really good," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said after the game. "So maybe where Maya had openings, they closed quickly and her recognition of what happens next was not very good."

Moore missed five of her first six shots and had just two points at halftime while the Mercury raced out to a huge lead. With Moore continuing to struggle in the second half, the Lynx trailed by as many as 25 points in a dominant performance from Phoenix, which is one win away from the franchise's fourth appearance in the WNBA Finals.

Watching Moore struggle was startling because it has so rarely happened this season. She scored at least 30 points in a game 12 times this season and topped 40 twice while unleashing a new and improved mid-range game that helped her win her first MVP award. But the versatility, the athleticism and the shot-making that the Lynx have leaned on all season was nowhere to be found in Game 1.

Game 2 is Sunday in Minnesota.

"I thought we executed quite well against her, playing her to space," Mercury coach Sandy Bordello said. "If she makes shots, she has to make shots that are contested. We didn't want to give her any separation."

Moore did average 25 points per game against the Mercury in four regular-season games this year, so there is confidence that she can get back on track at home. And with Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson all there to help as well, the Lynx don't believe Moore should shoulder so much of the scoring burden.

"We are a team that prides ourselves in being able to get offense from different players," Brunson said. "It's not always going to be Seimone's night. It's not always going to be Maya's night. So we know those things can happen. But I think the biggest key to this game was the fact that when we couldn't score, we allowed them to continue to score. We can't do that."

As much as the Lynx pride themselves on being bigger than any one player, there is no disputing the role that Moore played this season. She carried more of the responsibility than she ever has for a Lynx team that struggled with injuries to key players all season long, which is why she easily won the MVP award.

So if the Lynx are going to keep their hopes of repeating as champions alive, they realize they need more from Moore.

"We know we're up against the championship team," Mercury forward Penny Taylor said. "We know if we relax for a second, that they will be on top of us. I think the good thing is we have worked toward this all season. We have focused like this for every single game. We've had preparation from our coaches.

"We know what we need to do. Having said that, they are such a good team and we expect them to come back at full force."
