  • High five: Spurs cruise to another NBA title

SAN ANTONIO -- As it turns out, the expiration date for a dynasty is more flexible than many believed.

Years after the NBA punditry determined that San Antonio was too old to remain contenders for a championship, the Spurs were spry enough to win their fifth title in 15 years, defeating the Miami Heat 104-87 Sunday to win the NBA Finals four games to one.

San Antonio was on the verge of winning the championship last season but lost Games 6 and 7 in Miami, the former after blowing a five-point lead in the final 28 seconds. It was the Heat's second straight title.

"We were so close last year," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "We wanted to redeem ourselves. This title is the sweetest one."

San Antonio, trailing 22-6 in the first quarter, responded by outscoring Miami 53-20 during a long stretch that extended into the second half.

Forward Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and he was selected the Finals' Most Valuable Player. Leonard, 22, averaged nine points in the first two games but 24 over the next three.

"I had a great group of guys pushing me," Leonard said. "They told me I had to be aggressive every night for us to win the series."

Guard Manu Ginobili added 19 points, and forward Tim Duncan scored 14.

Parker missed his first 10 shots -- he was scoreless late in the third quarter -- but hit his next seven and finished with 16 points. His backup, Patty Mills, scored 17, including 14 in the third quarter.

The Spurs led handily before Parker scored a point, showing something people saw from them all season.

"This is a team," Ginobili said. "That's what makes it so nice."

San Antonio's four victories were by an average of 18 points.

"It was exquisite basketball," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said of the Spurs. "Ball movement, player movement, unselfish basketball."

Forward LeBron James led Miami with 31 points and 10 rebounds, but once again, he did not receive much help. Center Chris Bosh was the Heat's second-highest scorer with 13 points, and guard Dwyane Wade finished with 11. Bosh and Wade combined to hit 10 of 26 shots.

The Heat failed to score during the first four minutes of the second half.

Fans and media can debate whether the Spurs are a true sports dynasty because they never won championships in successive seasons, but they earn points for longevity. Duncan, 38, has been around for all five championships, the first of them in 1999.

During this year's Finals, Duncan set all-time NBA marks for postseason minutes played and playoff double-doubles -- in his case, points and rebounds.

Ginobili, 36, and Parker, 32, were key cogs for each of the Spurs' past four championships, including 2003, 2005 and 2007.

The Spurs led 47-40 at halftime Sunday after trailing by 16 points in the first quarter.

James ignited the fast start for the Heat, scoring 17 of Miami's 29 first-quarter points. San Antonio, in addition to being unable to stop James, missed 10 of its first 11 shots.

The Spurs recovered sufficiently to cut the deficit to seven after the first quarter, and then they really rallied.

Leonard scored a steady 15 in the first half. Ginobili scored eight in the second quarter to finish the half with 14.

The Spurs were on their way to grabbing the championship that they let slip away last season.

"Last year's loss was devastating," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "For the group to have the fortitude that they showed to get back to this spot I think speaks volumes about how they are constituted and what kind of fiber they have."

The Heat reached the NBA Finals all four seasons since James and Bosh joined the team, winning two titles.

"Take 50 percent in four years in championships any day," James said. "You want to win them all, but that's just the nature of the game."

NOTES: Ray Allen replaced Mario Chalmers at guard in Miami's starting lineup. Allen shot 1-for-8 and scored five points. Chalmers went 2-for-3 and scored eight points. ... San Antonio shot 47.4 percent Sunday, down from the team's 54.2 percent success rate in the first four games, the second-best mark through four games in the Finals in the NBA's shot-clock era (since 1954-55), according to Elias Sports. Included was the 75.7 percent the Spurs shot in the first half of Game 3, an NBA Finals record for any half. The Lakers shot 54.6 through four games in 1984 but lost in seven to the Boston Celtics. ... Before this series, Miami never trailed by two games during F LeBron James' four seasons with the Heat. ... The Spurs won Games 3 and 4 in Miami by a total of 40 points, the largest margin of victory by any team in consecutive NBA Finals road games ever. ... There are a lot of ways to describe the frustration of San Antonio's opponents in the 2014 playoffs. One comes from James, who said, "Any little mistake you make, they make you pay."

Superstar LeBron James will opt out of his current deal and become an unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard.

      • LeBron, Carmelo Props

        June 20, 2014

The 2013-14 NBA season is officially in the books and the attention on the hardwood has turned to the offseason, in particular the free agency period, which begins on July 1. The biggest potential free agent is LeBron James, who is still under contract for two more years with the Miami Heat but the All-Star does have the ability to opt out of the deal.

If he does, every other team in the NBA will pursue the league’s best player.

Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag are offering up odds on where James will play next.

To no surprise, the Heat are listed as heavy 1/8 favorites (Bet $100 to win $12.50).

After Miami, the offshore outfit believes LeBron could reunite with Cleveland, who has been listed as a 6/1 choice (Bet $100 to win $600).

Bettors should make a note that just because the Heat are the top betting choice to retain James, it doesn’t mean he’ll stay in South Florida. In case you forgot, Miami was nowhere on LeBron’s radar until very late in the process. In the summer of 2010, Cleveland was a 1/3 favorite to retain him and we all know how that turned out. In case you forgot, the Heat were the fifth choice after the Cavaliers, Bulls, Knicks and Nets.

Another looming free agent is New York's Carmelo Anthony. Similar to James, he also has an opt out clause in his contract and can become a free agent. Oddsmakers have made the Knicks 11/10 favorites (Bet $100 to win $110) to retain Anthony's services but the Bulls (6/5) are also receiving attention, as are the Houston Rockets (9/2).

All of the odds for these player props from Sportsbook.ag are listed below:

        • NBA Draft Props

          June 23, 2014

The 2014 NBA Draft will take place on Thursday June 26 and the talent pool available is being considered one of the deepest in years.

Cleveland won the NBA Draft Lottery and will have the No. 1 overall selection. Milwaukee will select second and Philadelphia will pick third in the draft.
One month ago, Sportsbook.ag felt the top overall pick would be one of three players -- Jabari Paker, Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid.

Wiggins and Embiid were both freshman teammates at Kansas. Wiggins averaged 17.1 points per game while Embiid, a 7-foot-center, averaged 11.2 PPG and 8.1 RPG plus he blocked 72 shots in conference play.

Wiggins was made a 5/8 favorite in late May and the oddsmakers still believe he'll be the top choice. Embiid (9/5) was right behind Wiggins but a recent foot injury has watched his stock drop. He is now the third choice, behind Jabari Parker.

Parker, a power forward, was the first freshman to lead the Blue Devils in both scoring and rebounding.

Most basketball pundits believe all three will have a great chance to be a future All-Star in the league.

Sportsbook.ag is offering up a chance for bettors to predict who will be the top pick in the upcoming draft and the offshore outfit is starting to provide other props for the event as well.

            • NBA

              Sunday, July 13

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA roundup: Anthony, Knicks work on deal
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The New York Knicks and forward Carmelo Anthony are negotiating a new contract, ESPN reported Saturday.

Anthony, a free agent, was being pursued heavily by the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets, but have reportedly been told that the All-Star is staying in New York.

Knicks president Phil Jackson said Thursday that he had not been in recent contact with Anthony, but the team had made five different offers to re-sign him. One of the deals was reportedly for the maximum five years and $129 million. A maximum deal would pay Anthony $22.5 million in the first year of the contract.

---The day after LeBron James announced that he's returning to Cleveland, he reached agreement on a contract with the Cavaliers on Saturday.

The deal is for two years and $42.1 million. James took a short-term deal because he hopes to maximize his earning potential by re-signing for the 2016-17 season when a new television contract is expected to boost salaries.

Under terms of the contract, James has an option to become a free agent after the 2014-15 season, but ESPN reported that he is committed to the Cavaliers over the long haul.

---Free agent power forward Pau Gasol confirmed Saturday on Twitter that he will sign with the Chicago Bulls.

"It hasn't been easy," Gasol tweeted. "After meditating it a lot I've chosen to play with the Chicago Bulls. Looking forward to this new chapter of my career."

Gasol spent the past six seasons with the Lakers, but he recently turned down two contract offers. The first offer was for two years and worth $23 million and the other was a three-year, $29 million offer, according to ESPNLosAngeles.com. Gasol, 34, averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game last season, despite a career-low 31.4 minutes per game. He made $19 million last season.

---Free agent shooting guard Vince Carter signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, a day after they lost Mike Miller.

Terms of the deal were not released by the team, but multiple media outlets reported that the contract is for three years and worth more than $12 million.

Carter, 37, helps fill the void left by Miller in Memphis. Carter spent the past three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 11.9 points in 81 games off the bench last season.

---The Utah Jazz retained restricted free agent guard Gordon Hayward.

Hayward's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN.com Saturday that the Jazz matched the Charlotte Hornets' four-year, $63 million offer sheet.

Hayward's new offer is worth an average of $15.75 million per season. The 24-year-old is coming off career highs with 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists last season.

---The Phoenix Suns announced Saturday that they completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Sacramento Kings to acquire guard Isaiah Thomas for the rights to forward Alex Oriakhi.

The Kings also get a $7 million trade exemption.

Thomas averaged career-highs of 20.3 points on 45.3 percent shooting, 6.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 72 games with the Kings last season. He was one of just six players in the NBA to average at least 20 points and six assists.

---Forward Trevor Ariza agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Houston Rockets, USA Today reported Saturday.

Ariza spent the past two seasons with the Washington Wizards. He played with the Rockets in 2009-10 when he averaged a career-best 14.9 points per game.

The Rockets created salary cap space, in part to try to land forward Chris Bosh. However, Bosh agreed to return to the Miami Heat on a five-year, $118 million deal on Friday. Houston is also deciding whether it will match the Dallas Mavericks' three-year, $46 million offer made to forward Chandler Parsons on Wednesday.

---The San Antonio Spurs re-signed guard Patty Mills and first-round draft pick Kyle Anderson.

Terms of Mills' deal were not released by the team, but the San Antonio Express-News reported it was a three-year contract.

Mills averaged 10.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game last season for the NBA champs. Anderson, a forward, averaged 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists with UCLA last season.

---Free agent guard Anthony Morrow agreed to a three-year, $10 million contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Morrow's agent, Wallace Prather, confirmed the deal with the Associated Press on Saturday.

Morrow averaged 8.4 points per game with the New Orleans Pelicans last season. He has career averages of 10.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in six NBA seasons with the Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and Pelicans.

---The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired center Brendan Haywood and the draft rights to forward Dwight Powell from the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday for guard Scotty Hopson and cash considerations.

              • NBA roundup: Heat sign three

Miami Heat president Pat Riley continues to move on with life after LeBron James, announcing three signings on Monday.

The Heat officially re-signed guard Mario Chalmers and signed free agent forwards Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger.

The signings come one day after forward Luol Deng signed a two-year deal with the Heat worth $10 million per season.

The Heat plan to team Deng with the freshly re-signed Chris Bosh and also hope to re-sign free agent Dwyane Wade in the wake of James' decision to return home to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

---The Dallas Mavericks acquired forward Greg Smith from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the rights to Tadija Dragicevic.

Smith (6-foot-10, 250 pounds) is a three-year veteran and holds averages of 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 14.4 minutes in 89 career games (10 starts) with the Houston Rockets. He spent three years with the Rockets before being released on April 10, 2014. He was then signed by the Bulls on April 14, but never played for the team.

Dragicevic (6-foot-9, 222 pounds) was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 53rd overall pick in the 2008 draft.

---The Orlando Magic officially signed free agent forward Channing Frye. The deal reportedly is a four-year, $32 million contract.

The 6-foot-11, 255-pound Frye played and started in all 82 games last season with the Phoenix Suns, averaging 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 28.2 minutes per game.

The Magic also acquired two future second-round draft picks (2015, 2016), cash considerations and the contract of forward Anthony Randolph from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the draft rights to forward Milovan Rakovic. Orlando intends to waive Randolph.

---The Detroit Pistons officially signed free agent guard Jodie Meeks to a multi-year contract. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal reportedly is for three years and $19.5 million.

The 6-foot-4, 208-pound guard has career averages of 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 24.3 minutes in 355 games (194 starts) with the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks. He joins the Pistons after spending the last two seasons with the Lakers where he averaged 11.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 27.2 minutes.

---San Antonio Spurs forward Matt Bonner signed a one-year, $1.448 million, veteran's minimum deal.

The defending champions are likely to bring back all 14 players on their NBA Finals roster. Only restricted free agent Aron Bynes is unsigned. The Spurs own refusal rights with the option to match any offer sheet another team would extend Bynes.

---Chandler Parsons is officially a Maverick. The restricted free agent forward signed three-year, $46 million offer sheet with the Mavericks on Thursday, and the Houston Rockets declined to match the deal.

Instead, the Rockets will use a large chunk of their cap space -- attained by trading Omer Asik to New Orleans and Jeremy Lin to the Lakers -- to bring in small forward Trevor Ariza.

---USA basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo confirmed the 19-player roster for the national team, headlined by 2012 gold medalists Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kevin Love and Anthony Davis.

The roster for the 2014 USA World Cup Team will be selected from the group and reports to training camp in Las Vegas July 28. DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors) and Chandler Parsons (Dallas Mavericks) were added to the roster this week.

The full roster assembled by Colangelo, who has a 62-1 record since taking over the national team in 2005, includes: Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards); DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Davis (New Orleans Pelicans); Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons); Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets); Paul George (Indiana Pacers); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); Harden (Houston Rockets); Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz); Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers); Kyle Korver (Atlanta Hawks); Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers); Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors).
