              • MLB roundup: Pirates land 1B Davis from Mets

After trying throughout the winter and spring training to add a left-handed hitting first baseman, the Pittsburgh Pirates got their man on Friday as they acquired Ike Davis from the New York Mets.

The Pirates traded minor-league reliever Zack Thornton and a player to be named for Davis. The 27-year-old was hitting .208 with one home run and five RBIs in 12 games.

The Pirates are hoping Davis can regain his form of two years ago when he hit 32 home runs and had 90 RBIs. Last year, he batted just .204 with nine homers in 103 games before his season ended Aug. 31 with a right oblique strain.

The Mets assigned Thornton to their Triple-A Las Vegas farm club. Thornton, 25, was 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four games with Triple-A Indianapolis.

---Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he is concerned about right fielder Yasiel Puig over reports that he has receiving death threats since joining the team last year.

Los Angeles Magazine and ESPN The Magazine published feature stories on Puig this week detailing his escape from Cuba. According to the reports, the threats were a result of friction between rival groups that helped Puig leave the island and whether they should share in the $42 million contract he signed with the Dodgers.

Puig and the Dodgers' front office are not commenting, but Mattingly said, "If you care about Yasiel, you worry about it. There's some serious stuff that he has to deal with. I think you have to worry about it if you care about him as a person. You worry about what he's going through."

---New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is set to come off the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Teixeira has been on the DL with a strained right hamstring. He last played April 4. If he is activated Sunday for a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, that means he spent the minimum required amount of the time on the 15-day DL. He played three innings of minor-league extended spring training session on Thursday.

---The Texas Rangers placed struggling pitcher Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list Friday with inflammation in his right elbow.

An MRI found no structural damage, but Scheppers will rest his arm for 10 days, MLB.com reported. Texas' Opening Day starter has posted an 0-1 record with a 9.82 ERA in four outings. He has given up 20 earned runs in 18 1/3 innings.

The Rangers purchased the contract of left-hander Aaron Poreda to fill Scheppers' spot on the pitching staff and designated infielder Andy Parrino for assignment to make room on the team's 40-man roster.

---The Oakland Athletics signed left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle to a five-year contract on Friday that includes club options for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal begins with the 2014 season and extends through 2018. Doolittle's previous one-year contract was worth $505,000 in the majors and $295,500 in the minors. He would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time next winter.

The 27-year-old Doolittle is a converted first baseman, making the switch near the end of the 2011 season, and he has proved effective out of the bullpen for the A's. In the 2012 and 2013 seasons, he posted a 7-6 record with a 3.10 ERA, four saves and 129 strikeouts in 122 relief outings. This year, he has a 0-0 record with a 3.12 ERA and one save in eight appearances.

---Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman has been cleared to pitch batting practice for the first time since he was hit in the face by a line drive during an exhibition game on March 10.

The left-hander sustained fractures of his nose and a bone above his left eye when hit by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals.

Reds manager Bryan Price said he was not sure exactly when Chapman will pitch for the first time, but added that it probably will come during the Reds' 10-game trip that ends April 27. He added that Chapman will go on a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the Reds.

                • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Aaron Harang no-hit the Mets for seven innings, was taken out after throwing 121 pitches as the Braves won 6-0 in Flushing, giving up one hit.

-- Ike Davis got traded to Pittsburgh for a AAA reliever and another player who has yet to be identified. Interesting that Davis was very popular with teammates.

-- Bronx bullpen gave up eight runs in 2.1 innings at Tampa Bay, turning 5-3 lead into an 11-5 loss to the anemic Rays, who snapped a 4-game skid.

-- Arizona won 4-2 in 12 at Chavez Ravine; they took lead in 9th inning on a wild pitch during an intentional walk. Dodgers tied game on a Uribe HR, but Snakes got big hit from Aaron Hill in the 12th to get a much-needed win.

-- Giants lost 2-1 at San Diego, are now 10-7, 0-4 in Matt Cain's starts.

-- Detroit lost 11-6 to the Angels; this was first time this year Tigers had to use a fifth starting pitcher, so their pitching depth may become an issue.

                  *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff on a spring day.......

                  13) I don't link to many things here, but this is worth all of our time, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo addressing a group of students at a vigil for the little 8-year old girl who passed away last month after a lengthy illness.

Izzo is an excellent guy in addition to being a top coach- this is good stuff.

                  12) Giancarlo Stanton hit a walk-off homer for the Marlins Friday, after Miami had the batter before Stanton (Ozuna) sacrifice with a 3-1 count and men on 1st/2nd and no one out, with Stanton up next. Seattle botched the play, but if they hadn't, Stanton could've been walked intentionally with a base open. Then what?

Put it this way, even Miami's TV guys were killing the strategy; Stanton has 28 RBI in 17 games for a dismal team-- when does he get traded to the Dodgers?

                  11) Mets almost got no-hit at home Friday; last time that happened was by a guy named Bob Moose of the Pirates, in September '69. Moose also gave up a walk-off homer to Johnny Bench in a '72 playoff game.

                  10) When the Knicks signed Lamar Odom Wednesday, he got a prorated check for one day of the season, worth $8,500- that also includes him working out for the team in the off-season, to see if they want him on the team next year. His deal for next season isn't guaranteed.

                  9) It annoys me that the 49ers got a new stadium to play in 10 days a year, but the A's can't get one to play 81 games in every year.

                  8) St Louis Blues used to have a defenseman named Chris Pronger who holds the team record, by playing 51:10 and 48:22 in playoff games. Guy on the Blues was on the ice for 44+ minutes in the triple OT game Thursday. Thats a ton of ice time in such an intense event. NHL playoffs are great theater.

                  7) Houston Astros scored in first inning in six of their nine home games, but haven't scored a first inning run in seven road games.

                  6) Middle Tennessee has incoming freshman hooper coming to Murfreesboro in the fall with a great name; Giddy Potts. He has to be on the all-name team.

                  5) Someone please remind me why Mississippi State fired its basketball coach Rick Stansbury two years ago? MSU had finished .500 or better in the SEC six years in a row but Stansbury got fired after missing the NCAAs two years in a row. Since he left, the Bulldogs are 7-29 in SEC play- they played the easiest non-league sked in America last season, then went 3-15 in the SEC. Not sure why the guy got fired.

                  4) QB Matt Joeckel transferred from Texas A&M to TCU and is expected to compete for the starting QB position this fall; being Johnny Manziel's backup, the kid must have some great stories.

                  3) Wonder how the citizens in Knoxville feel about Peyton Manning spending time in Tuscaloosa with ol' Nick Saban? Oh by the way, offensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide is someone Vol fans know too-- Lane Kiffin.

                  2) Speaking of Tennessee, there are still two basketball jobs open in the SEC, jobs at Missouri and Tennessee. Which one is the better job?

                  1) Our thoughts/prayers go out to TNT's Craig Sager, who was diagnosed with leukemia this week. Get well soon, sir; there are so few good sideline reporters on TV, we need every one we can get.

Game of the Day: Braves at Mets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets (+115)

The sample size is small considering Bartolo Colon has pitched 414 games since making his major-league debut in 1997, but the New York Mets right-hander has handled the Atlanta Braves. Colon takes the mound Saturday when the Mets host Atlanta in the second game of a weekend set, bringing a 4-0 career record with a 1.20 ERA in four starts against the Braves. Atlanta counters with Ervin Santana, who has emerged as a linchpin of the Braves’ revamped rotation with dominant outings in his first two appearances.

An encouraging sign for Atlanta – which scored six runs in Friday’s series-opening shutout victory – is the recent play of center fielder B.J. Upton, who is hitting .320 with five runs scored, four walks and three stolen bases in his past six games. The Braves are off to another flying start, winning 11 of their first 16 games after starting last season 12-1. David Wright kept the Mets from being no-hit in Friday, recording a single with two outs in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), WPIX (New York)

LINE HISTORY: The Mets opened as +115 home dogs against their N.L. East rival.

POWER RANKINGS: Braves (-187.0), Mets (+105.0)

INJURY REPORT: Mets OF Juan Lagares (15-day DL, hamstring), SP Bartolo Colon (Probable Saturday, back). Braves RP Gory Gearrin (15-day DL, elbow)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Ervin Santana (1-0, 0.64 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (1-2, 6.00)

It would be difficult for Santana to pitch any better in his first two efforts in an Atlanta uniform, and a bullpen meltdown Monday at Philadelphia is the only reason he is not 2-0. Still, Santana has allowed seven hits and one earned run in 14 innings, walking two and striking out 17. The 31-year-old has posted a 0.64 WHIP and is averaging 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Colon dominated the Braves in Atlanta’s home opener April 8, firing seven shutout innings with six hits allowed, no walks and five strikeouts. But he was pounded by the Angels on Sunday, surrendering nine earned runs on 11 hits – including four homers – in five innings. The 40-year-old, who is 10 victories shy of 200 for his career, makes his third career start at Citi Field, where he is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA.

                          TRENDS:

*Braves are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in New York.
*Braves are 4-0 in their last 4 after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game.
*Mets are 5-0 in their last 5 games following a loss.

CONSENSUS: 72 percent of backers are taking the Braves, with 54 percent backing the under.
