MLB Weekend Series - Five Key Takeaways
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's time to continue our look at the 2014 MLB season from Point Blank range, as we break down the weekend series to find major edges that can keep you ahead of the game in the days and weeks ahead.

Astros - Scott Feldman, “Believe it or not”

Feldman’s performance at Texas on Friday was a great human interest story, working seven shutout innings two days after his father passed away. He deserves kudos. That performance lifted him to a most unlikely 2-0/0.44 for the 2014 season, statistical evidence that he has been as good as any pitcher in the sport so far. But he hasn’t. This has been a classic example of “Baseball Being Baseball”, and as such you need to adjust properly.

To generate numbers that impressive, a pitcher ordinarily needs to be doing a lot of things right. They are not easy to find with Feldman. He has not commanded the strike zone, missing with 38.3 percent of all pitches. He sports a downright awful ratio of eight W’s and five HBP vs. only seven K’s. But two magic outliers have built his bottom line – of the 21 runners he has put on base, only one scored, and opponents have a microscopic .119 hit rate on balls in play.

Consider that latter number through this comparison – all other balls in play vs. the Houston defense have turned into hits at a .321 clip, which would rate #27 in the Majors. That shows just how much good fortune Feldman has been receiving from baseball’s geometry. He is who he is, a competent journeyman who could end up in a contender’s uniform by mid-summer, but not someone that can maintain this level.

Royals - Does the Offense have an upside

Minnesota’s struggling pitching staff sent Ricky Nolasco, Kyle Gibson and Kevin Correia to the mound against Kansas City this weekend, with that trio sporting a 6.41 ERA and 1.76 WHIP entering the series. In sweeping the Royals, they worked to tunes of 2.11 and 1.03 in the same categories, and it could have been even better – a misplayed bunt by Trevor Plouffe in the 8th inning would have turned Correia’s earned run count from three to one, had the official scorer ruled it differently. Meanwhile a mediocre Twins bullpen did not allow a run over 5 2/3 frames.

The end result was a sweep that dropped Kansas City to the bottom of the AL Central, despite the season beginning with such optimism. It is easy to see where the problem is. Again. In 2013 the pitching and defense were good enough to make the playoffs – a 3.45 ERA ranked 6th in the Major Leagues, and the defense was #8 on the Park-Adjusted ratings. But the Royals were #18 in runs and #24 in total bases. So far this season the pitching has actually improved a notch to 3.38, while the defense checks in at #5. Yet they have gone backwards in the standings. The offense brings up the bottom of the MLB tables in runs and total bases, with the alarming total of a lone home run through 356 at-bats. And while the opposing starters have included names like Verlander, Scherzer and Sale, as a group they have worked to a 4.40 tune, with a 1.36 WHIP, against all other opponents. In other words, close to average.

Once upon a time there was optimism fueled by home-grown prospects Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer. Gordon has turned out to be good, not great; Butler’s slugging percentage fell of by nearly 100 points in 2013, and you need a magnifying lens to find the current rate; Moustakas has been arguably the worst everyday player in the Majors this season; while Hosmer still has time on his side at 24. Those four bat at key offensive positions in the lineup, and the gap between their production, and what a contender needs from those spots, may be too wide for pitching and defense to make up for.

Reds - Billy Hamilton, “You can’t steal first base”

The Reds really want Hamilton to succeed – his speed is so dynamic in the way that he can alter games on the base-paths and in CF. Those 333 stolen bases across his first three Minor League seasons is something that may never be seen again. But stealing requires being on base, of course, and that is the problem. For as good as those counts were, he actually had more strikeouts than steals in the Minors – 348. That was a warning sign, and yet Cincinnati broke spring with him as the lead-off hitter, despite his ominous .256 average and .308 on-base at AAA Louisville LY. It isn’t working. And it isn’t working at a truly awful level.

It is one thing to struggle, and Hamilton certainly has – a dismal .195 on-base, with 50 percent more K’s than hits, and only two walks. But that becomes magnified when you are struggling at the key leadoff spot. How bad has it been? Hamilton has been the No. 1 hitter in the lineup in eight home games in his career. In three of those games the Reds lost 1-0. That already matches the number of 1-0 defeats they had suffered in their 11+ seasons at the Great American Ballpark, and nearly 900 games.

Now the question becomes how long Cincinnati management waits before sending him down for a second tour at AAA. There is an old baseball axiom that “You don’t learn to hit in The Show”, and they are running the risk of ruining his confidence. It is awfully hard to draw walks in the Majors when pitchers know that you can’t hit strikes. It is also awfully hard to generate offense with that little production at the top; having already lost three games in which they allowed two runs or less, they simply can not afford to let too many get away.

    Nationals - Defensive adjustments:

When Washington took the field at Atlanta on Sunday, there were only three Nationals playing the position they were projected to back in the spring – Jayson Worth in RF, Ian Desmond at SS, and Adam LaRoche at 1B. So naturally there is the usual handicapper’s task of making adjustments, and plugging other players and their abilities and characteristics into those spots. But this time it may be a bit more of a challenge – several players are now at a position that might not be fully comfortable with.

Danny Espinosa replaces Ryan Zimmerman in the lineup. Naturally that is a big offensive drop, but there is also a glove issue, with Anthony Rendon sliding over from 2B to 3B. Rendon is showing his ability to handle MLB pitching so far, but can he handle 3B? Because of his fast trajectory to the Majors, Rendon skipped AAA, and Sunday was only his 79th game as a professional at the position. The Nats also chose to bat him at leadoff, which adds an additional mental pressure.

In the OF it may not seem like a big offensive drop in going from Denard Spann to what will likely be a Kevin Frandsen/Nate McLouth platoon, assuming that McLouth’s knee is OK. But that platoon will be in LF, with Bryce Harper moving over to CF. There is a major defensive gap between Spann and Harper in that key spot, while Frandsen did not play in the OF at all with the Phillies the last two seasons, and McLouth did not take up LF full-time until the Orioles put him there in 2012. As for catcher, it is a case of trying to patch with Jose Lobaton and Sandy Leon until Wilson Ramos returns.

This defense bears watching, especially with Desmond’s ugly glove start to the season (five errors), and there should be a quick focus on the range charts. But if there is a sliver lining, it is the fact that the Washington pitching staff leads the Majors by a wide margin in Strikeout rate, which helps to keep the ball out of play. In the immediate future, they may need to.

Diamondbacks - Brandon McCarthy “Takes one for the Team”

The next time McCarthy takes the mound the pitching forms will show an 0-2/7.78, and with the Diamondbacks behind him also playing poorly, the oddsmakers may have to be generous to find takers. You may want to be among them.

McCarthy is doing a lot of things right. His upper-end velocity is up a full two mph, and he has only issued three walks over 19 2/3 frames, building on a command that has led to one free pass or none 18 times over 25 starts since coming to Arizona. His ground ball rate has been phenomenal, with 35 outs recorded vs. only three in the air. In his past two starts, neither the Dodgers nor the Rockies managed a fly-ball out, while 26 were retired on the ground. Which leads to part of the conundrum – those teams did manage four HR’s. Four HR’s without a fly-out is a distribution we will not see often. Giving up homers is obviously not good, but when those are the only fly balls, it calls for a different interpretation.

Let’s take it a step further. McCarthy’s box vs. the Dodgers on Friday will show six runs on 10 hits over seven IP. That is bad, but the last two runs, and three hits, never should have happened. He actually worked a decent seven frames, retiring 11 batters in a row in one stretch. But the Arizona bullpen was gassed, with Kirk Gibson using six relievers to throw 103 pitches at San Francisco the previous evening. So McCarthy was sent back out for the 8th to “Take One for the Team”, and face the heart of the Dodger order. That sequence cost his early-season ERA nearly a full run, and raised his WHIP from 1.17 to 1.32, but the shrewd handicapper might be able to take advantage of those misleading counts going forward.

Odds on winning the 2014 Stanley Cup

        3-1-- Boston Bruins

        6-1-- Colorado Avalanche/St Louis Blues/Chicago Blackhawks

        7-1-- Anaheim Ducks/Pittsburgh Penguins

        8-1-- San Jose Sharks

        12-1-- Los Angeles Kings

        20-1-- Montreal Canadiens/New York Rangers

        *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Improvising on a staycation; movie time

        13) In Las Vegas, when locals go to one of the local hotels/resorts instead of going out of town on a vacation, they call it a "stay-cation". Thats what I'm doing for 12 days-- had to postpone this Las Vegas trip for family reasons, so I'm hanging out in the Albany area. Trust me, Albany ain't Vegas, but went to the movies Monday and saw the Kevin Costner movie, Draft Day. Here are some thoughts......

        12) First of all, the 4:20 movie started at 4:38; lot of previews. Prices at concession stands make oil companies look altruistic- thieving bastards.

        11) Its hard to imjagine anyone who doesn't follow the NFL would like this movie; that said, I liked it, but if I didn't like it, they wasted a lot of money making it. It would be better for the non-football fan to watch it where you can start/stop as you wish to ask questions of your football fan significant other.

        10) Quick plot summary: Kevin Costner is the GM of the struggling Browns, who fired his father, the Browns' legendary coach, the year before (wonder if Lane Kiffin enjoyed that part?).

His father passed away the week before we join the Browns in preparation for the 2014 Draft, with the owner threatening to fire Costner if he doesn't "make a splash" with this draft, telling him that at a deserted water park for effect.

        9) Jennifer Garner is the Browns' salary cap expert/Costner's girlfriend; she has a tremendous car, a white Corvette that shows up in one scene. I'd like a Corvette.

        8) They did a good job with supporting actors; Frank Langella is Browns' owner, Denis Leary is the coach, Ellen Burstyn is Costner's mother, Rosanna Arquette is his ex-wife. Sam Elliott has one good scene, Sean Combs is in it, too.

        7) That said, if I'm a Chiefs' fan, I'm a little annoyed that the guy who plays geeky Hodges on CSI (Wallace Langham) plays the GM of the Chiefs in one scene.

        6) Cubs' first baseman Anthony Rizzo is listed in the credits; now I have to watch it again, since I totally missed his appearance.

I won't spoil any more of the movie for you; if you like the NFL, you'll like it.

        5) Miami Marlins are a terrible baseball team; after a 5-1 start, they've now lost eight games in a row. They've got one of the biggest stars in baseball in RF Giancarlo Stanton, so they build a ballpark so big even he has problems hitting homers. What genius thought that was a good idea? Stanton needs to be liberated from Miami.

        4) Somehow the 76ers lost 26 games in a row and didn't have the worst record in the NBA; shouldn't everyone in a suit with the Bucks lose their jobs for that?

        3) Pirates-Reds game was suspended in 6th inning Monday, with game tied 7-7; it will resume today at 5:30, with regularly scheduled game to follow.

        2) Ryan Zimmerman is on the DL for the fourth April in a row; its kind of like the swallows returning to Capistrano, and yes I'm bitter because he's on my fantasy team. Seven of the 26 guys on my team are hurt and its April 15. Oy. .

        1) If I hear one more media pundit argue that manager/umpire arguments are a reason for doing away with instant replay, I'm going to scream!!! Who gives a rat's ass about managers arguing, as opposed to potentially getting calls right?

People are so resistant to change, its pathetic. Seriously.

Padres hand Gyorko a five-year extension

Jedd Gyorko will remain in San Diego for a long time to come.

The second baseman signed a five-year contract extension with the San Diego Padres on Monday, a deal that could erase the first two seasons of his free agent eligibility.

The contract guarantees Gyorko $35 million through the 2019 season with a possibility of $47 million if the Padres exercise a club option for

2020 at $13 million. The deal is the third richest in major league history for a player with one season of experience.

Gyorko hit .249 last season with 63 RBIs and a franchise-rookie-record 23 homers.

Report: No fracture on Pedroia's wrist

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia does not have a fracture in his left wrist, ESPNBoston.com reported Monday.

However, more tests are scheduled for Pedroia and it is not clear when he can return.

Pedroia missed Sunday's game at the New York Yankees after experiencing soreness in the wrist. He was reportedly hurt during a play on April 4 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pedroia was sent back to Boston on Sunday for testing. The team starts a series Tuesday at the Chicago White Sox.

Pedroia, who has a career batting average of .301, is hitting just .236 in 55 at-bats this season.

Red Sox are the Majors best under play

Two weeks in to the Major League Baseball season and the defending champion Boston Red Sox many be suffering from a little World Series hangover. On the bright side it may be making them a solid under play to start the year.

The Red Sox are just 5-8 to start the season and have compiled a 3-10 over/under mark in that time, making them the best under play in baseball.

While Boston's pitching has been mediocre with a team ERA of 3.76 and WHIP of 1.30, their problem has been producing runs. They are ranked 25th in the majors in runs per game at 3.54.

The Red Sox start a series with the White Sox Tuesday.

Game of the Day: Dodgers at Giants
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (-109)

Adrian Gonzalez looks to continue his torrid start on Tuesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a three-game series against the host San Francisco Giants, who won two of three in Los Angeles earlier this month. Gonzalez, who has homered in four straight games, has an extra-base hit in eight consecutive contests while hitting .351 during a nine-game hitting streak. “Man, he’s smoking the ball,” teammate Matt Kemp told reporters. “He’s probably the best hitter in the league right now.”

Both teams enter the series riding a wave of momentum with Los Angeles coming off a three-game sweep in Arizona and the Giants winning two of three against Colorado. The Giants are hoping to generate more offense at home, where they’re hitting .244 through their first six games. Dodgers setup man Brian Wilson, who spent his first seven seasons with San Francisco, is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday after missing two weeks with an elbow injury.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, SNLA (Los Angeles), CSNBA (San Francisco)

LINE HISTORY: The Giants opened at -109.

INJURY REPORT: Los Angeles: LF Carl Crawford - questionable (upper body), RP Brian Wilson - 15 day-DL (elbow), SP Clayton Kershaw - 15-day DL (back). San Francisco: Marco Scutaro - 15 day-DL (back)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Josh Beckett (0-0, 9.00 ERA) vs. Giants RH Tim Lincecum (0-1, 9.90)

Beckett started for the first time in nearly 11 months last Wednesday against Detroit and yielded five runs (four earned) over four frames. “I felt good,” Beckett told mlb.com. “It was fun to just have things to work on. I have some things to adjust.” Hunter Pence is 7-for-17 with a home run against the 33-year-old, who is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts against the Giants.

Lincecum has allowed 15 runs in his first two starts, including seven runs in four innings against Arizona last Wednesday. “He was off all night,” manager Bruce Bochy told mlb.com. “That was pretty evident. He didn’t have good stuff or command.” Gonzalez is 11-for-52 with 16 strikeouts against the two-time Cy Young award winner, who is 9-6 with a 2.92 ERA in 23 career games (22 starts) against the Dodgers.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Giants are 6-1 in Lincecums last seven starts vs. Dodgers.
                        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                        * Dodgers are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in San Francisco.
                        * Dodgers are 1-4 in the last five meetings.

                        • Who's Hot - AL Edition

                          April 14, 2014

There are only six teams in the American League that own winning marks from an MLB betting standpoint through the first two weeks of the regular season. We'll be focusing on the top three here to watch this week at VegasInsider.com.

Oakland Athletics (8-4, +$333) – Oakland's pitchers have been out of this world of late, as they have held three of their last four foes to just one run or fewer coming into this week's games. The club has a 2.17 ERA as a team to go with a WHIP of just 1.08, and there isn't a lot to complain about from that perspective. However, we know that this team is going to have to hit the ball better in order to succeed in the long run. OF Josh Reddick is batting just .111 with splits of .111/.111/.290, and obviously, that isn't going to help the team out at all. 3B Josh Donaldson is barely batting the Mendoza Line. Still, there is plenty to be happy about when you're looking at this team. Pitching wins championships. Oakland has plenty of it.

Minnesota Twins (6-6, +$193) – RHP Ricky Nolasco really hasn't panned out through three starts thus far on the season, and RHP Kevin Correia hasn't been any better. RHP Phil Hughes has an ERA over a touchdown, and RHP Mike Pelfrey is in even worse shape. So how in the heck are the Twins finding ways to win games? Six of the regular starters are batting at least .265, and guys are getting on base left and right. OF Jason Kubel has an OPS of 1.057 early on in the season, and 3B Trevor Plouffe and 1B Chris Colabello have both been pleasant surprises out of the gates. Sweeping the Kansas City Royals early on in the campaign was a big time statement for a team picked by most to finish dead last in the AL Central this year.

Seattle Mariners (6-5, +$182) – The fun and games for the Mariners is about to be done with, as they have four games coming up this week against the Texas Rangers followed by three games against the Miami Marlins in a very awkward seven-game road trip. It's also becoming obvious that RHP Felix Hernandez can't pitch every game. King Felix is 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA, but the rest of the team is just 3-5 to show for its work and has a losing record from an MLB betting perspective. Still, there are things to be proud of here, and there are lots of things to be happy about for the future as well. 3B Kyle Seager isn't going to bat .121, OF Corey Hart isn't going to bat .188, and 2B Robinson Cano isn't going to go the whole season with just two doubles and no other extra base hits. The M's aren't the best in the AL West yet, but at least they are showing signs of improvement.

                            • Pirates, Reds clash again

                              April 15, 2014

                              Pittsburgh (6-6) at Cincinnati (4-8)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
                              Sportsbook.ag Line: Pittsburgh -115, Cincinnati +105, Total: 7.5

After a historical power performance on Monday, the Pirates and Reds continue their series with game two on Tuesday night.

These clubs met on Monday night and had to suspend the game due to rain after the sixth inning with a tie game of 7-7. The suspended contest will resume action at 5:30 p.m. ET tonight. If the last three innings are anything like the first six, the ending will be explosive, as the two teams combined to hit an incredible 10 home runs, including three separate occasions of back-to-back homers by the Pirates. This was only the third time this has been done, while the 10 homers were the most in the majors since 2006. Pittsburgh hit six of the bombs, bringing its season total to 18 (T-3rd in MLB).

Neil Walker was responsible for two of the home runs and now has four on the year, which is surprising, as he has averaged just 13.5 HR per year since 2010. The Reds have struggled in the early going of 2014 and could not win any of their first four series. Their bats are coming alive though, and after they put 12 runs on the board Sunday against the Rays, they hit four home runs and scored seven runs over the first six innings on Monday.

The pitchers who are expected to tame these hot hitting offenses will be 23-year-old phenom RHP Gerrit Cole (2-0, 3.46 ERA) for the Pirates and RHP Mike Leake (1-1, 2.45 ERA) for the host Reds.

This matchup has been dead even over the previous two seasons with the two clubs splitting 38 games between each other while Cincinnati holds a slight edge at home (10-9).

Recent trends show that Pittsburgh is 24-9 (.727) after having lost four or five of its previous six games since the beginning of last year, while Leake has gone 29-10 (.744) versus teams whose hitters strike out seven or more times per game, and the Pirates are fanning 8.5 times per game so far on the season.

Gerrit Cole has been one of the more heralded prospects over the past few years and he has lived up to his billing thus far. In his 2013 rookie campaign, he went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA (1.17 WHIP) while striking out 7.7 batters per nine innings as a 22-year-old. He’s already showed that he is ready to be a top-of-the-rotation pitcher for the Bucs for years to come. Over his first two starts in 2014, Cole has earned a win both times while striking out 10 Chicago Cubs batters and allowing four runs (3 ER) in his last outing.

He has yet to face Cincinnati in his young career, but will need to be sure to be careful against 1B Joey Votto who is a career .324 batter against right-handers. The other power lefty in the Reds lineup, OF Jay Bruce, is much better against righties (.265 BA) than he is against lefties (.235 BA) but is hitting just .179 in 39 at-bats overall this year while striking out 11 times (12 walks) and hitting two home runs (8 RBI).

The Pirates' bullpen has been fantastic up until this point in the season, going 4-1 while putting up a 2.48 ERA but has been successful in just 3-of-5 save opportunities. Closer Jason Grilli (1.80 ERA, 3 saves) has gone 3-for-4 in his save chances so far, but has had trouble with his control, walking four batters in his first five innings of work.

Mike Leake is not a big strikeout pitcher, averaging just 5.9 K/9 over his career, and has just six in 14.2 IP in his first two starts this year. He gets plenty of groundballs though, and will rely heavily on his defense to provide support for him over the entire year. Leake put together a very impressive effort against the reigning NL Champion Cardinals in his last start, going eight scoreless frames while allowing just four hits. He’s also had previous success when facing the Redbirds, going 5-3 (7-8 team record) with a 3.79 ERA (1.30 WHIP) and has received a win in each of his past three starts against them. Leake has allowed just four total runs in those three games (18.2 IP) while striking out a total of 13 batters with only four walks.

One of the stars in Monday’s game, 2B Neil Walker, has gone 9-for-28 (.321) with a homer and 11 RBI in this matchup and is not the only player to put up great numbers against the righty, as C Russell Martin is 9-for-19 (.474, 1 HR, 3 RBI) against him in his career. OF Andrew McCutchen is only 9-for-40 (.225) with 9 K’s against Leake, but does have 2 HR and 6 RBI when facing him.

One area where Cincinnati has a clear disadvantage in this game will be its relievers, as the team has combined for a 5.29 ERA with 21 strikeouts and 16 walks over just 27.2 innings. Aroldis Chapman threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Monday before the game and will watch as Jonathan Broxton (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who also just returned from injury, works the ninth inning for the time being. He has saved 111-of-153 games (73%) so far in his career.
