          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Monday's MLB betting cheat sheet
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Wherling Darvish

The Texas Rangers enter Monday's action as a -142 favorite against the visiting Oakland Athletics - thanks in no small part to Yu Darvish. The Rangers' scheduled starter has limited opposing hitters to a .217 average and has allowed just one home run in 28 ininngs.

          Wilin is able

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley will face an old nemesis in Monday's series opener against visiting Colorado (+115). Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario is 8-for-16 with three doubles and a homer in his career against Miley.

          Wacha's walk problem

St. Louis Cardinals hurler Michael Wacha hopes to have more success finding the strike zone in his matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers (+136). The 22-year-old struck out 10 over just four innings last time out, but also issued five free passes - two more than his first four starts combined.

          Pitching notes

          * Chicago Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija is off to a blistering start, having limited foes to two earned runs or fewer in each of his first five starts.

          * Milwaukee Brewers righty Yovani Gallardo has allowed just one home run over his first 31 2/3 innings in 2014 after surrendering 18 a season ago.

          Hitting notes

          * San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera is hitless in 16 lifetime at-bats against San Francisco Giants right-hander Madison Bumgarner.

          * Since belting a pair of home runs against the Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Wil Myers is 5-for-30 with zero RBIs and nine strikeouts.

          Total streaks

Chicago White Sox (5-1 O/U): Buoyed by the amazing start to Jose Abreu's major-league career, the White Sox are scoring runs by the boatload - racking up 16 against Texas a week ago and plating nine in two of their last three games.

          Injury Watch

          * Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun (strained intercostal) is expected to miss the next 3-to-5 days.

          * New York Yankees infielder Yangervis Solarte (sore right shoulder) is considered day-to-day.

          * Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez (bruised right thumb) is hoping to return to action Tuesday.

                • A's, Rangers begin 3-game set

                  April 28, 2014

                  Oakland (15-10 ) at Texas (15-10)

First pitch: Monday, 8:05 p.m. ET

                  Sportsbook.ag Line: Texas -145, Oakland +135, Total: 7.5

An important early season AL West battle takes place as the Athletics and Rangers battle it out for first place on Monday night in Arlington.

Oakland comes into this contest with a chip on its shoulder after being swept by Texas just last week in a three-game series. The A's managed just seven total runs over the three games, but have turned it around offensively with 29 runs in four games since then. Although they were shut down in Sunday's 5-1 loss, 3B Josh Donaldson went 5-for-15 (3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 double, 5 walks) in the just-completed four-game series with Houston (2-2 split) and is hitting .278 overall on the season with 7 HR and 20 RBI.

The Rangers are coming off a series loss to the Mariners this weekend after winning nine of their previous 11 games. The two losses that they took at the hands of Seattle were by just one run each, and the series could have been swept by Texas if not for its bullpen allowing eight runs in four innings over the two losses. OF Alex Rios (.330 BA this season) has a six-game hitting streak coming into this one, and was 5-for-12 over the weekend.

Taking the mound for the visiting Oakland will be 24-year old RHP Sonny Gray (3-1, 2.25 ERA) as he takes over the role of “ace” on the staff. Opposing him will be the always exciting RHP Yu Darvish (1-0, 1.61 ERA) who has just one win despite allowing only five runs in 28 frames and his team prevailing in each of his four outings. Although it is early in the year, each team has impressed, with the A's going 9-4 on the road and the Rangers equaling that mark when playing at home.

As mentioned earlier, Texas did well with a sweep of Oakland in the first meeting this season and that brought its record to 20-21 in this series since the start of 2012 while it has split 20 games (10-10) at home.

The A's have done well as underdogs of +125 to +175 since the start of last year, with a 12-6 mark (.667), while the Rangers are 14-1 with Darvish on the mound in April games.

Sonny Gray has surprised everyone with how well he has pitched since joining the major-league club late last season, and over his first 17 games (15 starts) with the team, he has gone 8-4 with a tremendous 2.53 ERA. Oakland needed him to perform this well with both Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin undergoing Tommy John surgery. Gray earned his first loss of the year when he faced the Rangers Wednesday, allowing five hits and three runs (1 HR) while striking out eight batters (4 walks). The start was his first against Texas in his career and the home run he gave up came off the bat of 3B Donnie Murphy.

Besides the aforementioned Rios, Gray will need to be careful when facing OF Leonys Martin (.312 BA) who has gone 6-for-20 over the last week with four stolen bases. On the other hand, SS Elvis Andrus (.264) is just 3-for-22 in that timeframe while drawing five walks. The Athletics’ bullpen did allow a solo homer on Sunday afternoon, but is still 7-6 with an impressive 2.73 ERA while converting just half (5-for-10) of the save opportunities. They do not have one everyday closer on the team, but instead run Jim Johnson (5.73 ERA, 1 save), Luke Gregerson (2.63 ERA, 3 saves) and Sean Doolittle (6.17 ERA, 1 save) out to the mound in the ninth depending on the situation.

Yu Darvish blew away major leaguers in his second season last year when he went 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA while striking out a league-leading 277 batters. He has continued his dominance to start off 2014 and has trimmed the strikeouts (9.3 K/9 compared to career 11.1 K/9 rate), in order to improve on his control, as he is allowing 2.6 BB/9 compared to his career 3.7 BB/9 rate. His last outing was against the Athletics last Monday, and he allowed a season-high in hits (8), runs (3), and walks (4) while striking out six and surrendering his first home run of the season. Darvish has now taken on Oakland eight times in his career, going just 1-6 (2-6 team record) with a 4.32 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He does have three double-digit strikeout performances mixed into those games, but has also allowed eight home runs in just 50 IP.

While going 6-for-18 with four home runs and six RBI against Darvish in his career, 1B Brandon Moss (.268 BA) will be licking his chops when he steps into the batter’s box on Monday. Many other of the Athletics’ batters have had success against the righty as OF Coco Crisp (6-for-17, 1 HR, 7 RBI), 1B Daric Barton (5-for-10, 1 HR, 2 RBI), INF Alberto Callaspo (7-for-21, 2 doubles, 3 RBI) and C John Jaso (5-for-17, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 7 K’s) have all hit him hard. On the other hand, 3B Josh Donaldson and OF Yoenis Cespedes have combined to go just 6-for-30 (.200) with 17 strikeouts and a homer against Darvish in their careers.

Texas’ relievers have been giving away games of late, and after getting their second loss in three days, they have combined to go 8-6 with a 4.93 ERA while successfully closing 7-of-10 games on the season. Closer Joakim Soria (3.60 ERA, 6 saves) has converted all six of his save chances this year and has an impressive 10:2 K/BB ratio while allowing just five hits in 10 frames of work.

Seattle Mariners (10-14) at New York Yankees (15-10)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET

                        Sportsbook.ag Line: New York -170, Seattle +160, Total: 8

Robinson Cano heads back to the Bronx for the first time since joining the Mariners when his team opens a three-game series versus the Yankees on Tuesday night.

Even with all of its offseason acquisitions, Seattle was unable to get off to a good start this season and recently suffered an eight-game losing streak. In the four games since the streak, the club has done much better, going 3-1 while winning its weekend series against the Rangers. The M's got to the Texas bullpen on Friday and Sunday, scoring eight runs in just four innings and winning each game by a score of 6-5. Seattle 3B Kyle Seager (.228 BA) really struggled out of the gate, but showed his talent over the past four games, going 8-for-15 with five home runs and 11 RBI. 2B Robinson Cano has provided a great average this year (.301 BA), but has just one home run and five doubles over his first 93 at-bats with his new team.

Not many thought that New York had much of a chance at the division this year because of its pitching, but that part of its roster has impressed so far, including holding opponents to just a .240 average over the past seven contests. OF Brett Gardner (.272 BA) does not get the chance to play every day with such a crowded outfield, but has made the most of his past three games played, going 4-for-10 with five runs and four stolen bases.

Looking to keep the Mariners going in their winning ways will be journeyman RHP Chris Young (0-0, 3.50 ERA) as he looks to put together his first full season since 2007. Opposing him for the host Yankees will be LHP CC Sabathia (3-2, 4.78 ERA) who attempts to build on two consecutive quality starts.

Seattle has not played well on the road this season, with a 5-8 record, but New York has been tremendous at home going 8-4 in front of its fans.

Over the past three seasons, the Yankees hold a 10-6 overall advantage in this matchup (4-5 at home though), with 12 of the 14 games going Under the total. Bettors should be aware that New York is just 22-27 (.449) in home games after two or more consecutive Unders since the start of 2012 while the Mariners are 32-56 (.364) after batting .240 or worse over a 15-game span since the beginning of last season.

Both 3B Yangervis Solarte (shoulder) and OF Brett Gardner (foot) are questionable for the Yankees in this game.

Chris Young has been around for quite some time now, making his debut for the Rangers back in 2004. But he did not pitch in the majors last season starting just nine times in the Nationals' minor-league system. He began this year with eight scoreless innings in his first two games (1 start), but has given up seven runs on 11 hits in his previous two starts (10 IP) while walking more batters (8) than striking them out (6). Out of his 162 career starts at the big-league level, only three have come against the Yankees, and he is 1-0 (1-2 team record) with a 5.52 ERA (1.50 WHIP) in the matchup. Young’s most recent game against them came back in 2012 as a member of the Mets, and he allowed three runs and seven baserunners (4 H, 3 BB) over six innings while striking out four.

Both OF Ichiro Suzuki (8-for-21, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 5 walks) and OF Alfonso Soriano (4-for-17, 2 HR, 3 RBI) have hit Young hard and have the most experience against him, while OF Carlos Beltran (2-for-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 double) has been great in limited at-bats. On the other hand, INF Kelly Johnson and C Brian McCann have combined to go just 4-for-23 (.174) versus Young with McCann hitting a solo home run.

The Mariners' bullpen has been solid this season, and despite its poor 3-7 record, it has a 3.45 ERA (1.39 WHIP) in 78.1 frames while getting a save in 5-of-8 opportunities. Fernando Rodney (3.24 ERA, 5 saves) has blown just one save so far on the year and already has 12 strikeouts in just 8.1 innings on the mound.

CC Sabathia has seen his ERA rise in each of the past three seasons and had a career-worst 4.78 ERA over 32 starts last year. His strikeout rate also fell to 7.5 K/9 after seeing his average fastball velocity drop below 90 MPH for the first time in his career. After allowing at least four runs in each of his first three starts this year, Sabathia has done much better in his past two starts (13 IP), where he has allowed just four runs (3 ER) on 10 hits and five walks, while getting 14 strikeouts. In his career against the Mariners, the left-hander has a tremendous 13-4 record (team 16-6) with a 2.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and double-digit strikeout performances in each of his past three starts against them.

Sabathia’s team has won nine consecutive games against Seattle when he is pitching, and he is personally 8-0 in that time. The current Mariners players do not have much experience against the lefty, while utility INF Willie Bloomquist (.217 BA) is batting .357 (10-for-28) with three doubles in the matchup. The only starter on the team with more than one hit against him is 1B Justin Smoak (.241 BA) who is 2-for-9 with a solo homer and three strikeouts in his career in the matchup.

The New York bullpen has seemingly stabilized with the return of closer David Robertson from the DL. The unit has gone 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while striking out an impressive 87 batters in just 75.2 innings this year, while saving 10-of-12 games. Robertson (0.00 ERA, 4 saves) has been a perfect 4-for-4 in his save tries this year while giving up just two hits and two walks in his five innings of work.

-- Missouri hired alum Kim Anderson as its new hoop coach; they spent $42,000 oin a search firm to hire a D-II coach who played/coached at Mizzou. Oy.

-- Meanwhile, Ben Howland coached in three Final Fours but can't get a job.

-- Heat 109, Bobcats 98-- Miami has won 20 in a row over Charlotte, which has still never won a playoff game. Not a lot of competition there.

-- Hawks 107, Pacers 97-- Indiana is 0-10 in series when they trailed 3-2.

                            *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

                            13) I deferred to my friend John for this question, since I wasn’t sure if my personal bias had tinted my opinion: who is the best shortstop of all-time? John is a wiser man than I, has seen more than I have. His answer: “ARod was the best since I’ve been alive in combining offense and defense.”John views shortstop as an 80-20 split between defense/offense, so he also mentioned Ozzie Smith/Omar Vizquel. There you have it, an opinion from a baseball scholar.

                            12) We listed down below how Rod Carew’s 29 bunt hits in 1974 helped his batting average; John points out that a stellar defender like Ozzie Smith or nowadays, Nolan Arenado at third base will rob hitters of more than one hit a week, so what is their value to a pitching staff and a team? One key play can bail a pitcher out of a jam, give him momentum; the effect can be hard to quantify.

                            11) Quirk to NFL schedule this season: no AFC teams on Thanksgiving Day. Bears-Lions will be the CBS game. Another quirk: 49ers can’t host a night game on a weeknight this year, unless it is a holiday, because powers-that-be in Santa Clara, where their new stadium is, don’t know how that would affect traffic. Apparently it’s a one-year thing.

                            10) If Oklahoma City goes on to win the NBA title, the 3-ball Reggie Jackson hit in Game 4, when Thunder was down 5 with about a minute left, that could very well be the turning point in their season. Huge shot.

                            9) A’s Brandon Moss got hit by a pitch twice in the 9th inning Friday; last time that happened was June 8, 2012, when David DeJesus got hit twice in the 7th inning of a game.

                            8) Clippers didn't practice Monday, the day before Game 5 of a playoff serries that is tied 2-2. How is this acceptable? Everyone knows Donald Sterling is a racist scumbag, we get it. Despite that, coaches/players are paid millions to compete and play basketball for people who pay a lot of money to watch them. Its their job.

So the NBA will suspend Sterling Tuesday, as Adam Silver does his job, but who on the Clippers is doing theirs? Players should be selfish and play for each other, for the chance to win a championship. Laying down this week serves no purpose.

                            7) There are 40 bowl games now, counting the national title game? That means 78 of 128 I-A teams are in a bowl? I like watching these games, but bowls are supposed to be a reward. Teams that finish under .500 don’t deserve a reward.

                            6) Atlanta’s Alex Wood is 1-3 in his last four starts, but losses were 2-1/1-0/1-0; he’s allowed five runs in his last 28 IP, so he’s pitching really well, just not getting any run support.

                            5) My hometown of Albany isn’t the most exciting place, but the Denny’s on Wolf Road can be entertaining at 5am on a Saturday night. I go there sometimes after I finish writing; always good for a laugh. Usually one table (not me) tries to bolt their check, the police come, and there is a lot of screaming. They actually have two security guards working there on weekends. Good stuff.

                            4) Cure Auto Insurance is running commercials with Michael Vick as its spokesman. Not sure who advised them this was a good strategy, but would you buy insurance based on what Michael Vick said?

                            3) Saw the Jon Gruden/Johnny Manziel QB camp thing on ESPN. Manziel lit up when asked about calling line protections; at Texas A&M, the center does it, but obviously, Johnny Football would’ve liked to do it. Interesting bit of TV.

                            2) Rod Carew had 29 bunt singles in 1974, when he batted .364 in 599 AB’s. Without those 29 bunt hits, he’s a .316 hitter that year, so as Kevin Costner said in Bull Durham, adding one hit a week to your batting average is worth around 45-50 points to your batting average.

                            1) RIP, Dr Jack Ramsay, who coached the Portland Trailblazers to their only NBA title, in 1977. Sharp guy, was an avid runner. He ran a triathlon when he was 70. years old. 70. Learned a lot from listening to him work games on the radio/TV after his coaching days were done. Thanks, coach.
