Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 3-9

    Hot team

    Boston Bruins (4-0 SU)

There's a new top team in the Eastern Conference - at least for now - and it's a familiar one if you've been following the standings for the past few years. The Bruins assumed their place atop the conference with a four-win week, moving one point ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins in what should be a spirited battle for the remainder of the season. Boston opened the week with impressive home wins over Washington and Florida - outscoring them by a combined 7-1 tally - before hitting the road for victories over the Lightning and Panthers.

    Cold team

    Nashville Predators (0-3 SU)

Speaking of changes to the ledger, the Predators have become the lowest-scoring team in the Western Conference after a dreadful stretch that has seen them score just three goals over their last four games. That includes a three-loss week in which they squandered the finale of a six-game homestand with defeats to the Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets. The Predators enter Monday with just 152 goals on the season - one fewer than the Vancouver Canucks - and will now hit the road for games against Ottawa, Buffalo and Chicago.

    Best Over play

    New Jersey Devils (3-0 O/U)

Goals have come fast and furious for both the Devils and their opponents of late, as they're riding a six-game over streak that includes three high-scoring affairs last week. New Jersey opened the stretch by splitting a home-and-home series with the Detroit Red Wings, earning a 4-3 home victory before getting thumped 7-4 at Joe Louis Arena. The Devils closed out the week with a thrilling 5-4 home victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, marking the fifth time in the previous six games that they've scored at least four goals.

    Best Under play

    Buffalo Sabres (0-4 O/U)

Who else? The Sabres have been strong under plays all season - and last week was no exception, as the retooled roster managed just six goals in four games while stumbling to a 1-3-0 record. Buffalo opened with a 3-2 loss in Dallas, then defeated Tampa Bay 3-1 and dropped a 2-0 decision against the Panthers to split a pair of games in Florida. The Sabres finished strong, hanging in against the defending-champion Chicago Blackhawks before ultimately losing 2-1 to fall to 12-14-8 in one-goal games on the season.

    Surveying the schedule

Time is running out for the Vancouver Canucks, who open the week four points out of eighth place in the Western Conference with just 16 games remaining. The Canucks are going through their worst stretch in recent memory, with only a pair of one-goal victories over the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames keeping them from 13 consecutive losses. Vancouver opens with what could be the easiest game of the week - a home date with the New York Islanders - before embarking on a four-game road trip that begins with visits to Winnipeg, Washington and Florida.

Game of the Day: Rockets at Thunder
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-4, 217)

The Houston Rockets have the best record in the NBA since Jan. 1 and can close in on second-place Oklahoma City in the Western Conference race when they visit the Thunder on Tuesday. Houston is 23-6 since the calendar turned to 2014 and will move within one game of Oklahoma City if it prevails in the opener of a tough three-game road trip. The Thunder fell to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday and are just 3-5 since Russell Westbrook returned from a knee injury.

Oklahoma City is 2-0 against the Rockets this season, including a 117-86 home victory on Jan. 16. The Thunder have struggled to find a groove since Westbrook’s return and the point guard’s propensity for shooting has led to fewer opportunities for star forward Kevin Durant (NBA-best 31.7 scoring average). Houston brings a five-game winning streak into a stretch of road games against Oklahoma City, Chicago and Miami. The Rockets have won 10 of their past 13 road games.

                      TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBATV, CSN Houston, FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City)

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Thunder opened as 3.5-point faves and are now 4-point faves. The total has held steady at 217.

                      POWER RANKINGS:
                      Rockets (-12.3) - Thunder (-14.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Thunder -4.7

                      INJURY WATCH:
Thunder - Thabo Sefolosha (Out, Calf), Kendrick Perkins (Out, Groin)

                      ABOUT THE ROCKETS (44-19 SU, 33-28-2 ATS, 30-31 O/U):
All-Star guard James Harden is on another roll and poured in 41 points in Sunday’s 118-113 overtime win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Harden fell two points shy of his season high and topped 30 points for the 15th time this season and is averaging 28.2 points during Houston’s winning streak. The Rockets’ rise has prompted chatter about the squad being a legitimate NBA Finals contender but center Dwight Howard doesn’t want his teammates getting caught up in it. “You just want to hold up that trophy come June,” Howard told reporters. “You’ve just got to stay humble. That’s the message. Stay humble and stay hungry and continue to do the small things to help us win games.”

                      ABOUT THE THUNDER (46-17 SU, 34-28-1 ATS, 33-30 O/U ):
Durant had 27 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for his sixth career triple-double but Oklahoma City experienced severe defensive issues in the 114-110 loss to the Lakers. The Thunder blew an 18-point second-quarter lead and allowed Los Angeles guard Jodie Meeks to score at will with 20 of his 42 points coming in the third quarter. “You can’t take possessions off,” coach Scott Brooks said afterward. “No matter who we have on the floor, their job is to stay in front of their man on the defensive end. We have to do a better job with that. There’s no sugarcoating it.”

                      TRENDS:

                      * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                      * Underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                      * Rockets are 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.
                      * Over is 4-1 in Thunder last five home games.

                      CONSENSUS:
56 percent of wagers are on the Oklahoma City Thunder -4.

Big 12 tournament betting preview: Value in teams chasing Jayhawks
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Big 12 tournament is a mix of things we’ve come to expect out of the conference. Kansas is the regular season champ and a host of schools are looking to knock off the Jayhawks for a shot at an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the Big 12 this week.

                        Favorites

                        Kansas Jayhawks (+200)
                        – Their star freshman Joel Embiid may be out with a back injury, but the Jayhawks still earned another outright regular season title and expect to be contenders for the conference double. Leading scorer and fellow freshman Andrew Wiggins (16.8 ppg) is going to have to step up and shake off a season finale loss on the road to West Virginia if the Jayhawks are going to make their conference tournament stay a long one.

Iowa State Cyclones (+400) - One of the best teams in non-conference play, the Cyclones suffered a midseason slump before roaring to the finish line to finish third in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Boasting Big 12 Player of the Year Melvin Ejim (18.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG) and senior guard DeAndre Kane (17.1 PPG, 5.9 APG) the Cyclones have two experienced leaders who will leave everything on the floor.

                        Live Underdog

                        Oklahoma State Cowboys (+400)
                        – Forget the losing streak and the Marcus Smart suspension. The Cowboys won four straight (including a Kansas sweep of the Wildcats and Jayhawks) before pushing Iowa State to overtime, proving they’re still a force to be reckoned with. The No. 8 seed Cowboys have work to do, but they’re a team that nobody wants to face.

                        Best ATS team

                        Oklahoma Sooners (+600)
                        – The Sooners (18-10-1 ATS) are the third favorite to win the Big 12 tournament and have been an ATS force. Six straight ATS wins and eight of the last 10 have bettors confident that the surprising Sooners can make a run deep into the conference tournament while continuing their ATS success.

                        Best total team

                        Texas Tech Red Raiders (+7,500)
                        - The scrappy Red Raiders have played strong defense under respected head coach Tubby Smith. Texas Tech has troubles scoring the ball - 244th in the nation - which is equally responsible for the Red Raiders’ playing Under the total eight times in their final 10 games. Their run in the tournament may be short so this value Under play may not give total bettors many opportunities.

Big East tournament betting preview: Villanova doesn't want to play Creighton
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first tournament of the reformed Big East is set to take place in a battle between new faces and defenders of the old guard looking for the conference crown at Madison Square Garden.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the Big East this week.

                          Favorites

                          Villanova Wildcats (+150)
                          – The Wildcats defended the Big East and held off newcomers all season on their way to a 28-3 record and a outright conference title. Looking for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, Villanova may have to conquer their demons against a Creighton team that swept them in conference play in Nebraska and on its home court in Philadelphia.

Creighton Bluejays (+175) - Tops in the nation in 3-point shooting (42.1 percent) and FG percentage (49.6 percent), Creighton is led by senior sensation Doug McDermott who has already passed Larry Bird in scoring and is supported by sharpshooter Ethan Wragge and guards Auston Chatman and Grant Gibbs. Two 20-point wins over Villanova point to Creighton as the likely favorite in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 final, but first they’ll have to get there by outlasting the field.

                          Live Underdog

                          St. John's Red Storm (+600)
                          – A member of the "old" Big East, the Johnnies call MSG their home and need a big tournament run to ensure that their 20-11 record is improved enough to crack the final field. St. John’s has wins in eight of its last 10, even if a home loss to Xavier is cause for concern, and the ability to hang with true Final Four contenders in Villanova and Creighton.

                          Best ATS team

                          Villanova Wildcats
                          – Not much of a curveball in the Big East as the conference winners have the best ATS record with the Wildcats matching their 28-3 SU record with an equally-impressive 21-8 ATS mark.

                          Best totals team

                          Villanova Wildcats
                          - In addition to having the best ATS mark the Wildcats also have the best O/U differential with their games going Over the total 18 out of 28 times.

                          ST JOHN'S 6-1
                          XAVIER 10-1

SEC tournament betting preview: Can anyone beat the Gators?
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most experts believe the Southeastern Conference title is the Florida Gators' to lose - and it's hard to argue with that logic, as the Gators roll into the Georgia Dome with a perfect conference record and the top rank in the nation.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the SEC tournament at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta this week:

                            Favorites

                            Florida Gators (10-13)
                            - No team in the conference could touch Billy Donovan's Gators, who went through a shaky stretch in mid-to-late February - beating Auburn, Mississippi and Vanderbilt by single digits - but have no equal within the SEC. Casey Prather leads a balanced attack with 14.6 points per game while shooting a blistering 62.5 percent from the floor.

Kentucky Wildcats (4-1) - John Calipari's crew represents the best chance at knocking off powerhouse Florida, but was soundly outclassed in an 84-65 loss at Gainesville, Fla., last weekend. Julius Randle had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss, and while it will be difficult for the Gators - or anyone else in the tournament - to stop him, he's going to need plenty more help to lead Kentucky to the upset.

                            Live Underdog

                            Arkansas Razorbacks 15-1)
                            - Not only are the fifth-seeded Razorbacks the only team in the SEC to take the Gators to overtime - dropping an 84-82 decision back on Jan 11 - they also handled the second-seeded Wildcats twice in extra time during the regular season, including a 71-67 decision at Lexington on Feb. 27. Arkansas won six of its final seven games going into the tournament, and ranks in the top-20 nationally in scoring at 80.6 points per game.

                            Best ATS team

                            Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
                            – The Volunteers (17-12 ATS) were the best of a tightly-packed bunch atop the conference ATS standings, ultimately prevailing thanks to a three-game winning streak to end the season. Fourth-seeded Tennessee comes into the tournament as a longshot, but has momentum on its side after obliterating its final three opponents - Vanderbilt, Auburn and Missouri - by a combined 93 points.

                            Best Over/Under

                            Vanderbilt Commodores
                            - No SEC team does low-scoring affairs like the Commodores (6-21-2 O/U), who returned more Under value than just about any team in all of Division I. Kevin Stallings' roster put together three lengthy Under streaks throughout the season, capped by an eight-game run to close the season. Just how offensively void were Commodores games down the stretch? Only three times did either team score more than 70 points in Vanderbilt's final 14 games.

                            KENTUCKY 4-1
                            TENNESSEE 5-1
                            ARKANSAS 15-1
                            GEORGIA 20-1
                            MISSOURI 25-1

Buffalo backers hope luck continues in MAC tourney

When it comes to the Mid-American Conference, Buffalo is the No. 3 seed in your program, but No. 1 at the betting window. The MAC Tournament opened Monday night at campus sites and will move to Cleveland from Wednesday through Saturday, with the Bulls bringing a 17-7 ATS mark – eighth in the nation – into the tourney.

Buffalo (19-9 SU) earned a bye straight to Thursday’s quarterfinals in the 12-team field. Western Michigan (21-9 SU) is the No. 1 seed but is a modest 14-12-1 ATS, and No. 2 seed Toledo (26-5 SU) is just 11-14-1 ATS, with both teams getting byes into Friday’s semifinals.

Double-digit spreads can't stop the Shockers

Oddsmakers can’t seem to put enough double-digit spreads out there that Wichita State won’t defy by covering. The still unbeaten Shockers (34-0 SU) continue to lead the nation with a torrid 24-6-1 ATS mark, after sweeping through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with three blowout SU and ATS victories, all as a double-digit chalk.

Wichita State rolled Evansville 80-58 laying 17.5 points Friday, ripped Missouri State 67-42 giving 15 on Saturday, then dumped Indiana State 83-69 as a 12.5 point fave Sunday. The Shockers have been double-digit chalks in their last nine games, and they’ve cashed the last eight in a row.

Kansas' Joel Embiid expected to miss first weekend of NCAA's

Kansas center Joel Embiid is now expected to miss the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.

The potential No. 1 overall selection in June's upcoming NBA Draft got a second opinion on his ailing lower back from a specialist in Los Angeles Monday.

The specialist confirmed the original diagnosis of a stress fracture and the treatment required makes it unlikely Embiid will be ready to play in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.
