    MLB roundup

--- The Texas Rangers and manager Ron Washington agreed to a contract extension through the 2015 season, the team announced.

Washington was entering the final year of his contract and signing the extension ends questions about possible lame-duck status.

Washington, 61, has been the Rangers' manager since 2007 season. He has more wins than any Rangers manager in history (611) and took the Rangers to the World Series in 2010 and 2011, losing both times.

---The New York Yankees announced that they signed outfielder Brett Gardner to a four-year contract extension.

The new deal begins in 2015 and includes a club option for 2019.

The Yankees did not release financial terms but it has been reported that the deal is worth $52 million. It buys out the first four years of his free agent eligibility. The club option is reportedly worth $12.5 million.

---The Yankees play an exhibition game against Florida State on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., which means the Yankees could face Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.

Winston is the closer on the Seminoles' baseball team, and he has allowed just one hit and no runs in four innings of work this season.

---Tony Clark, Major League Baseball Players Association executive director, said all is well between suspended Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and the union.

Clark said he expects Rodriguez to be back on the playing field next year when he comes off his season-long ban and does not expect any retribution against him from players who were reportedly angered that he filed a lawsuit against the union.

---The Baltimore Orioles announced they have signed free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz to a one-year contract.

It had been reported by multiple media outlets on Saturday that Cruz agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract. Cruz can reportedly earn up to an additional $750,000 in incentives.

---New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis told the New York Post on Sunday that he hid an oblique injury from the team last year and then downplayed the story on Monday.

Davis said he did not tell the Mets about the injury because he did not want them to think it was an excuse for being sent to Class AAA Las Vegas. Davis was hitting .161 when the Mets demoted him in early June.

Davis changed his tune Monday, angrily downplaying the story to reporters, including the Post writer. Davis said he admitted he had the injury for a couple of months before the oblique popped, but many other players have injuries, too, and they do not tell the team because they do not want to get taken out of the lineup.

---Washington Nationals reliever Ryan Mattheus was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of a chest injury he sustained.

Team doctors told Mattheus they believe he has irritation in a joint on the inside of his right pectoral muscle. Mattheus initially felt pain in his chest after recently throwing a bullpen session. The team then shut him down from throwing.

---The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Brent Morel off waivers after the third baseman was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Letdown spot

This might be a bit of a stretch, but letdown spots are difficult to find following a two-plus week break - with that being said, I believe Carey Price could be in for a less-than-stellar effort against the Red Wings on Wednesday night (provided he starts).

There's obviously a substantial drop-off from Team Canada's stellar defense to the Habs shaky blue line corps. Price will find that out in a hurry.

The Red Wings are banged-up but still pose a formidable challenge.

        Lookahead spot

Toronto will begin its post-Olympic journey with a stop in Long Island to face the Islanders on Thursday night. Here's thinking the Leafs will have one eye on Saturday's showdown in Montreal, however.

The break couldn't have come at a much worse time for the Leafs, as they had been rolling prior, winners of five of their last six games. Facing a John Tavares-less Isles squad likely won't draw a ton of motivation on Thursday night - even if it is their first game in weeks.

        Schedule spot

I'll back a team in a favorable scheduling spot for a change this week.

The Ducks will have been home and cool for nearly three weeks (those that didn't compete in Sochi at least) when they take the ice on Friday night against the Blues, and boy has Anaheim had St. Louis' number this season, taking both previous meetings - both in enemy territory no less.

St. Louis travels to Vancouver for a tough matchup with the Canucks on Wednesday before shuffling off to Anaheim.

This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Letdown spot

Phoenix will conclude a rough three-game stretch Tuesday night when it hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Suns were at home against the Spurs and Rockets for their previous two games, beating San Antonio 106-85 and losing to Houston 115-112. If they beat Minnesota, they will consider their mini homestand a success.

The Suns will be in a letdown spot the following night in Utah, especially if they win Tuesday. Phoenix will be playing its third game in four nights in the thin air and altitude of Utah. It will also be the Suns’ sixth game over a nine-day stretch since coming back from the All-Star break.

          Lookahead spot

Houston comes into Tuesday night’s game at Sacramento as a winner of nine of its last 10 games. The Rockets are in the middle of a five-game road trip since coming off the All-Star break, and their game against the Kings is not the win they want. Their circled game comes the following night in Los Angeles.

The Rockets will play the Clippers Wednesday night and, considering the schedule, Houston will likely ease up in Sacramento in order to save energy for the bigger game. Houston will also be playing its fifth game over an eight-day stretch versus the Clippers.

          Schedule spot

Golden State embarked on a six-game East Coast road trip that began in Detroit Monday. The Warriors will then stop in Chicago, New York, Toronto, and Indiana before finishing in Boston on March 5. The trouble spot for Golden State will come Sunday, March 2 in Toronto.

That game will be the Warriors' fourth of the week and it’s simply a bad scheduling spot for Golden State. The start time for that game is 4 pm ET which is awkward to begin with, and it’s even worse for a Western team on a long East Coast trip. The Raptors will have two days off prior to that game, so the Warriors are certainly in an extremely difficult scheduling spot for their stop north of the border.

Take The Money And Run: Biggest Betting Streaks

            ATS winning streak

Nebraska doesn’t have much of a basketball pedigree. The last time the Cornhuskers heard their name called on Selection Sunday, Bill Clinton was still almost a year away from being impeached. In all, Nebraska has made only six NCAA tournament appearances. And while the Huskers will likely have to shock the basketball world in the Big Ten tournament (something they have never done) to get in this season, they’re making things interesting for non-bettors and bettors alike. Their neat five-game SU winning streak is paralleled by a five-game ATS win streak, and Nebraska is now 16-10 overall and above water (8-6) in the conference. And there’s more good news: Nebraska’s next three opponents (Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana) are a combined 14-28 in the league.

NEXT UP – Wednesday at Illinois

            ATS losing streak

Brian Shaw certainly didn’t sign on for this. Hired late as head coach of the Nuggets, Shaw has been trying to apply the brakes to the fire-drill offense the Nuggets used for years under George Karl. But injuries (Danillo Gallinari, Nate Robinson and JaVale McGee are out for the year, and Ty Lawson has been out with a broken rib) have intervened. It’s all added up to what is likely to be a sub-.500 season. The Nuggets have won only one game since their best player, Lawson, went down with a broken rib, and Denver has covered only once in the last nine games. Lawson is due back Tuesday and five of the next six are at home, but the damage appears to have been done.

NEXT UP – Tuesday vs. Portland

            Over/under streak

Exactly when did the Detroit Pistons decide that it was in their best interest to stop playing defense? In their last four games the Pistons have given up 108 and 116 in a back-to-back set against Charlotte, 107 to Atlanta and 113 to Dallas. Naturally, all games went over, and Detroit is now an astounding 40-16 O/U this season, with the last four all breaking the ceiling. This team has Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond to protect the rim and still gives up more points than all but four teams. Opponents shoot better against the Pistons (nearly 47 percent) than anyone else. Not hard to understand why so many Detroit games exceed the number.

NEXT UP: Monday vs. Golden State (Pistons +2.5, 209)
