    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the Boston Red Sox' best minor league prospects.......

    1) Xander Bogaerts, SS/3B-- Got 44 ABs in big leagues LY.

    2) Henry Owens, P-- 3-1, 1.78 in six AA starts last season.

    3) Jackie Bradley, OF-- Gamecock alum hit .189 in 37 MLB games.

    4) Allen Webster, P-- Got knocked around in seven MLB starts.

    8) Brandson Workman, P-- 6-3, 4.97 in 42 IP in big leagues LY.

    16) Bryce Brentz, OF-- Hit 17 HRs in 326 AAA ABs LY.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.....

    13) Was happy to see Dale Earnhardt Jr so excited Sunday night after he won the Daytona 500, his was pure joy. Lot of celebrities, they become too cool to show when they’re really, really happy, this was fun to watch.

    12) There is too much speculation about who is in/out of the NCAA tournament, as if it were an ongoing selection process. ESPN reports Joe Lunardi’s stuff like it is fact; while he is usually very good with his analysis, it isn’t fact. “Oh, if Tennessee wins at Texas A&M, they’ll move into the field.” That type of “reporting” is just wrong. The committee will come up with the 68 teams in three weeks; those will be the facts.

    11) Jadeveon Clowney ran a strong 40-yard dash at the Combine, somewhere between 4.47 and 4.53, depending on who you believe. Clowney didn’t have a strong senior year at South Carolina, but the success Vontaze Burfict had with the Bengals after a sub-par senior season at Arizona State will only help Clowney’s status. NFL Draft is May 8 and its going to be interesting.

    10) Why wouldn’t a quarterback prospect throw at the Combine? What do they have to lose? Seems like agents are stifling the kids from showing their skills. If I was a prospect like Johnny Manziel, I’d want the whole league to see what I can do, let them know that I’m anxious to show off my skills. Guess that’s one of many reasons why I’m not an agent.

    9) Lookalikes: golfer Victor Dubuisson and Brad Pitt, especially when they are wearing sun visors.

    8) Included in Jim Boeheim’s post-game whining Saturday night was a complaint that the Orange had to play at Maryland last night after playing at Duke Saturday, while the Terrapins had Saturday off. Seems like a fair complaint, but the ACC ain’t trying do to Maryland any favors, seeing as they’re bolting the ACC for the Big Dozen. Sometimes things just happen.

    7) On flip side of Boeheim’s meltdown was UNLV’s Dave Rice reacting like an adult to the Rebels getting hosed by a replay review at Boise State, which cost UNLV a game it had apparently already won.

My only question is this; if Rice was more of a bastard, prone to outbursts, would he have been more likely to get that call? Does yelling/working refs get you an extra call or two a game?

Would Bob Huggins or John Calipari have gotten that call? I’m just asking, and by the way, the basket UNLV scored should’ve counted, seeing as it was called good on the floor and no replay clearly showed it wasn’t good.

    6) Its funny that Gene Simmons owns part of an Arena Football team, the LA Kiss; Simmons is highly skilled at making money, but he isn’t a sports fan, something he made clear on his reality TV show. Speaks well of the AFL that he invested in it though. His QB is likely to be Colt Brennan, who played college ball at Hawai’i.

    5) In case you’re wondering, in an average NBA game, each team has the ball 96 or 97 times a game.

    4) Syracuse 57, Maryland 55-- Terps outscored Orange 19-3 on foul line, but turned ball over 18 times (-7), wasting too many possessions to pull a big upset. Syracuse is very shaky right now; they play Virginia next.

    3) Texas Rangers extended Ron Washington's contract thru the 2015 season, so he will not enter this year as a lame duck manager.

    2) Sounds like the 49ers have a problem, in that Jim Harbaugh doesn’t get along well with the team’s other decision makers, to the point where he or some of the others may have to go.

Pat Riley wrote a book about how teams are constructed then either thrive or fall apart; this part he called “The Disease of Me” where people think they are the reason the team is winning, rather than the collective effort being the reason. Curious to see how this plays out, but how do the 49ers let Harbaugh walk?

    1) RIP Harold Ramis. One of the great comedic minds of our time, Ramis was Bill Murray’s sidekick in Stripes, was a regular on Second City TV and was behind scenes in movies like Animal House, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, just a brilliant, funny mind. 69 is too young to go. Rest in peace, sir.

New rule covers home plate collisions

Major League Baseball and the players union officially negotiated the addition of a new rule covering collisions at home plate on an experimental basis for the 2014 season.

Rule 7.13 prohibits the most egregious collisions at home plate. It states that:

"A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball).

"Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the umpire, the catcher, without possession of the ball, blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe.

"In determining whether a runner deviated from his pathway in order to initiate a collision, the umpire will consider whether the runner made an effort to touch the plate, and whether he lowered his shoulders or pushed through with his hands, elbows or arms when veering toward the catcher. The rule that will be in effect in 2014 does not mandate that the runner always slide or that the catcher can never block the plate. However, runners who slide, and catchers who provide the runner with a lane to reach the plate, will never be found to be in violation of the new rule. Beginning immediately, clubs will be required to train their runners to slide and their catchers to provide the runner with a pathway to reach the plate at all levels in their organizations."

MLB is sending training materials to teams during spring training, including discussions on the new rule, retraining catchers and base runners, and meetings with managers. MLB and the union will form a committee of players and managers to review developments during the season and discuss possibly applying the rule beyond the season.

Instant replay will be used to review collisions that potentially violate the rule under the crew chief's discretion.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEC becoming most 'unbettable' conference in college basketball
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When someone says college football, the first thing that comes to mind is the SEC.

Now, do the same with college basketball. Not the same reaction, is it?

While programs like Kentucky and Florida continue to find themselves among the country’s basketball elite, the rest of the SEC has suffered a major downgrade in quality this season. A quick look at the SEC standings reveals that beyond the Wildcats and Gators, the remaining programs have barely kept their heads above water.

Georgia is third in the conference, putting together a 9-5 SU SEC record but is anything but a shoo-in to hear its name called on Selection Sunday. Below the Bulldogs is a variable Purgatory of ho-hum basketball teams, with seven programs locked at 7-7 SU in SEC play heading into Monday night. Outside of Florida's 19-game winning streak, the longest string of victories in the SEC currently is Arkansas' three-game run (1-2 ATS).

Things are even bleaker in the SEC when your factor in the pointspread. The breadwinner of the conference just so happens to be its worst team. South Carolina sits in the basement of the SEC with a 10-17 record and a 3-11 mark in conference play but is 13-9-2 ATS. And that’s about as good as it gets betting inside the SEC, which is quickly becoming an unbettable conference.

Top teams like Florida, Kentucky and Missouri are all sitting around .500 ATS and the only other programs covering more often than not are Tennessee (14-11 ATS) and Vanderbilt (13-10-2 ATS) – not exactly bursting with betting value. Trying to get a tight grasp on the SEC odds from night to night is like pulling a mid-tantrum child who has gone limp off the floor - a lot harder than it looks and extremely frustrating.

The SEC currently ranks sixth out of the seven major conferences in college basketball – ACC, AAC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac-12 – in RPI, ahead of the mutant American Athletic Conference. The Atlantic 10, which is still considered a mid-major league, sits higher than the SEC in RPI at 0.5618. CBSSports.com’s Jerry Palm predicts just three bids from the SEC in his latest mock NCAA tournament bracket.

One take on the downfall of SEC hoops is that the conference’s members are focusing all their time and resources on the football teams – college sports’ true cash cow.

Jacob Kornhauser, a writer for Rant Sports, believes football-focused programs like Alabama and Texas A&M could really care less about their basketball records, pointing to the Aggies’ new 111,000-seat renovations to their football stadium. Those two football powers are a combined 12-16 SU in SEC play with a collective 22-24-3 ATS record on the year.

Jon Solomon, a writer with AL.com, has done a series of articles exploring the downfall of SEC basketball, looking at the overall lack of top-tier talent in the league as well as dwindling interest from fans. His most recent piece debates that SEC basketball coaches aren’t on the same level as their football counterparts, comparing winning percentage and salaries. His two exceptions - Florida's Billy Donovan and UK's John Calipari - have a combined NCAA record of 69-24. The rest of the coaches in the SEC boast a unimpressive 35-34 mark.

When comparing the SEC football teams’ ATS success to that of its basketball teams, the pigskin profits piled up thanks to programs like Auburn (12-2 ATS) and Missouri (11-2-1 ATS) which ranked among the best bets in college football.

Perhaps SEC bettors should hibernate for the remaining weeks of the college hoops season, and set the alarm for Week 1 of college football. Or just accept that your conference is in the crapper. You can always bet the Over/Under...

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACC's slow-motion pace paying out for Under bettors
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ACC is moving in slow motion compared to the rest of the country which is making Under bettors rich quick.

According to NCAAB stats expert Ken Pomeroy, the ACC is currently the slowest-paced conference in college hoops, ranking 32nd out of the 32 conferences in terms of pace. ACC teams are currently chewing up the shot clock and getting fewer possessions per game which is leading to lower scoring.

That methodical pace has helped Under bettors score during ACC action, with the conference boasting a 92-116 Over/Under record (56 percent Under) heading into Monday’s schedule.

“I think (the 35-second shot clock) gives people flexibility to play the way they want to play,” Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton told NoleSports.com. “I think that’s what makes college basketball so interesting.”

Only North Carolina and Maryland rank in the Top 100 of Pomeroy's tempo stats, but even the Terps have a 5-8 Over/Under record in conference play showing that it’s been hard for teams to escape the slow pace in the ACC.

Covers Expert Sean Murphy predicts that despite the Pomeroy numbers, consistent Unders from ACC teams may be a trend that’s on the way out with the postseason around the corner.

"To be honest, I think we'll see value going the other way as the ACC tournament, and NCAA Tournament approach," says Murphy. "The conference may be a little top-heavy, but it boasts plenty of offensive talent, even if the pace has lacked at times.

“It's not as if this is a conference that's loaded with defensive powerhouses. We should see those Over/Under records start to move back toward the mean in the next month or so."

For now, bettors should look at specific schools when riding the wave of low-scoring ACC games as schools like Syracuse (12-2 Under), Virginia (9-6 Under), Miami (9-4 Under), and Virginia Tech (11-2 Under) have all been paying out on the Under for months now.

Game of the Day: Bulls at Hawks
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks (-1, 188)

The Chicago Bulls have persevered through numerous injuries to key players more adeptly than the Atlanta Hawks, which is why the teams have passed one another while heading in opposite directions in the Eastern Conference standings. The Hawks will try to narrow the gap by one game when they host the Bulls on Tuesday. Chicago, which is in fourth place in the East, has won four straight in the series including the first two meetings this season.

The Hawks are expected to be without forward Paul Millsap (knee), further depleting a frontcourt that is already missing its top three centers in Al Horford, Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon, but they won without Millsap on Saturday, beating New York 107-98 to snap an eight-game skid. "It was very important," forward Mike Scott told reporters. "We were down Paul, down so many bodies. It was just great for everyone to come out and play hard and finally get a win." The Bulls also have endured their share of injuries, most notably losing point guard Derrick Rose for another full season, and Jimmy Butler missed Sunday's 93-79 loss at Miami with a rib injury and is considered questionable to return against the Hawks.

                    TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), SportSouth (Atlanta)
LINE HISTORY: Early lines in Las Vegas had this game listed pick'em but adjusted their suggested spread to Bulls -2 with Paul Millsap out. The total was sent out at 187. Online shops opened Atlanta as high as -2 but that was bet down to -1. The total opened at 188 points.

                    POWER RANKINGS:
                    Bulls (-7.0) - Hawks (-6.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Hawks -2.0

                    INJURY WATCH:
Bulls - Jimmy Butler (Ques. - Ribs), HAWKS - Paul Millsap (Out, Knee)

                    ABOUT THE BULLS (29-26 SU, 27-28 ATS, 22-33 O/U):
Chicago has been a streaky team and strung together its third five-game winning streak of the season before falling to Miami. The Bulls were less than thrilled with their effort against the Heat, who were without LeBron James (broken nose) but still held Chicago to 35 percent shooting. Center Joakim Noah and forward Taj Gibson combined for 40 points and 35 rebounds against Miami and will look to duplicate their performance in the last meeting with Atlanta, in which they combined for 43 points and 28 boards.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (26-29 SU, 27-27-1 ATS, 34-21 O/U): Atlanta, which has steadily slid down the Eastern Conference standings since the brunt of the injuries hit, is tied for seventh with Charlotte but still has a 3.5-game cushion over ninth-place Detroit. It's remarkable the Hawks are still in the mix considering they've used 16 different starting lineups — including a different one in each of the last six games. Scott has been the latest player to emerge, as the second-year forward has scored 20 and 30 points in the past two games.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Bulls are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                    * Under is 10-1 in the last 11 meetings.
                    * Favorite is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                    * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 17-23

Hottest ATS - Miami Heat (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

The Heat came into the week facing three straight statement games - including back-to-back showdowns with their opponents from the 2011 and 2012 NBA Finals, and an encounter with one of the top defensive teams in the league. All Miami did is earn a double-digit victory in Dallas, wallop the Thunder in Oklahoma City and return home to cruise past the Chicago Bulls despite playing without superstar LeBron James. The Heat are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine overall and expect James (broken nose) back this week.

Coldest ATS - Oklahoma City Thunder (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS)

The Thunder's week was short and anything but sweet, as they welcomed back point guard Russell Westbrook with a pair of clunkers against the Heat and Los Angeles Clippers. Oklahoma City struggled to do much of anything against the Heat, losing by 22 after going in as a three-point favorite. The Thunder ran into the opposite problem in an eight-point loss to the Clippers - they had no trouble scoring, but allowed Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Co. to hang a whopping 125 points on them.

Best Over play - Los Angeles Clippers (1-2 SU, 3-0 O/U)

No matter how much the over-under rises for Clippers games, Lob City continues to deliver on the "Over". It had a perfect week coming out of the All-Star break, losing a 113-103 decision to the San Antonio Spurs, dropping a 102-96 decision to the Memphis Grizzlies and combining with Oklahoma City to score 242 points in Sunday's shootout win. Chris Paul looks sensational in his return to injury, while Blake Griffin is averaging better than 30 points per game so far in February.

Best Under play - New Orleans Pelicans (0-3 SU, 0-3 O/U)

The Pelicans were expected to be one of the higher-scoring units in the NBA coming into the season, with three talented guards and a dangerous froncourt in Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson. That hasn't panned out due in part to injuries to Anderson and Jrue Holiday, and things reached a new low last week with New Orleans failing to break 93 points in any of its three losses. Davis has shown to be a star in the making, but the secondary scoring just hasn't been there of late.

                    Surveying the schedule

Don't look now, but the Golden State Warriors - yep, the Warriors - are in the top 10 in the NBA in fewest points allowed (98.6). That new-found commitment to the other end of the court will be put to the test, as the Warriors open a six-game Eastern Conference road trip Monday night against the Detroit Pistons. With games in Chicago, New York and Toronto to follow, Golden State could find the sledding tough before wrapping things up next week against Indiana and Boston.

NHL Top 6: Teams affected by the winter break
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL regular season goes into hibernation after this weekend as the best players in the world head to Sochi, Russia to take part in the 2014 Olympic tournament.

A handful of teams have to be thrilled at the prospect of putting the season on pause for a while. The combination of injuries and poor play has left some clubs in shambles as they sputter toward the final pre-break weekend. Conversely, several teams will be sad to see their momentum halted by the hiatus.

Here are three teams happy to have the time off, along with three that would rather play on:

                          Cold Teams

                          Los Angeles Kings

The 2012 Stanley Cup champions may want to use the two weeks off to search for their missing offense. Los Angeles heads into Thursday's action in utter disarray, having scored just six goals in its previous seven games. The lengthy dry spell has dropped the Kings to second-last in the NHL in average offense (2.2 goals per game), as several of their big guns have misfired mightily since the beginning of the new year. Los Angeles entertains Columbus on Thursday.

                          New York Islanders

The Islanders may have finally run out of gas after showing glimpses of brilliance for most of the season. The offense bottomed out in 2-1 and 4-1 losses to the rival Rangers while the defense and goaltending have been disappointingly porous of late, surrendering 21 goals over the course of their five-game losing streak. Things won't get any easier for New York in its final stretch prior to the break, with a game in Washington followed by home dates against the red-hot Calgary Flames and dangerous Colorado Avalanche.

                          Montreal Canadiens

Canadiens fans find themselves in a quandary as they prepare for the regular season to shut down. Their team has stumbled to a 6-8-3 mark since late-December, but one of the culprits behind the team's struggles - netminder Carey Price - probably isn't going to get any time to rest. Price has been tabbed as one of Team Canada's three netminders and should draw at least one starting assignment in Russia. The Canadiens have a busy final week ahead, hosting the Flames and Vancouver Canucks before facing the surging Carolina Hurricanes.

                          Hot Teams

                          Calgary Flames

It's just the Flames' luck that they enjoy their hottest stretch of the season just as the calendar shifts to Olympic time. The Flames are riding a five-game winning streak coming into the week and, while it may not be enough to move them back into the playoff picture, it should help the confidence level of a roster featuring a number of young impact players. The perfect homestand included impressive victories over west powers Chicago and San Jose, providing plenty of momentum heading into this week's trip through Montreal, Long Island and Philadelphia.

                          Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto has been one of the NHL's hottest teams since mid-January, earning wins in nine of its last 11 contests - including a perfect three-game homestand in which the Maple Leafs eked past Tampa Bay before defeating Florida and Ottawa by identical 6-3 scores. The offense has been rolling along at its best pace of the season, scoring at least three goals in nine of the past 10 games to take plenty of pressure off the defense and goaltending. The Maple Leafs wrap up their pre-Olympic schedule with games in Florida and Tampa and a home game against Vancouver.

                          Winnipeg Jets

Continuing the theme of Canadian teams playing well as the Olympic hiatus approaches, the Jets have been one of the league's most pleasant surprises since switching head coaches. Paul Maurice has lit a fire under the Winnipeg players, taking over for the departed Claude Noel and leading the Jets to an 8-2-0 record in his tenure. Winnipeg is excelling at both ends of the ice and has wins over Anaheim and Chicago to its credit over that stretch. The Jets' pre-break schedule features road games in Carolina, Washington and St. Louis.

Florida tops in the nation, not at the betting window

Florida has finally ascended to the top of the national rankings, and all the Gators had to do was win 19 games in a row to get there. Syracuse’s two-game skid allowed the Gators (25-2 SU) to take the top spot.

However, as impressive as Florida’s SU run has been, the results at the betting window haven’t matched up. The Gators are just 11-11 ATS this year, and during their 19-game win streak, they’ve cashed just eight times, including ATS losses in their last two starts, against Auburn and at Mississippi.

New Mexico sizzles ATS in last 10 games

New Mexico is coming off a statement victory over then-No. 6 San Diego State on Saturday, ripping the Aztecs 58-44 as a 4-point home chalk. But the Lobos have been making statements on the floor and at the betting window for the past five weeks.

Entering a Jan. 18 contest at Fresno State, New Mexico was 12-4 SU and a meager 3-9 ATS. Since then, the Lobos have gone on a 9-1 SU and ATS spree.

Duke faces its biggest spread since the New Year

The Duke Blue Devils will face a spread larger than 20 points for the first time since Dec. 16. The Blue Devils are 2-3 against the spread when it is 20 or more points this season.

Duke will welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies as a 21.5-point home favorite.

Minnesota opening as a small home-dog against Iowa

The Minnesota Golden Gophers, who have been stellar at home, are only getting 2.5 points against the No.19 Iowa Hawkeyes. In the past three meetings between the Gophers and the Hawkeyes, Minnesota averaged 59.6 points per game while Iowa averaged 76 ppg.

When these teams met earlier this year, Minnesota lost 94-73.

Five struggling SU teams thriving ATS

If you look at the top 10 teams in the nation against the spread (ATS), you'll notice that a team doesn’t have to be lights out straight-up (SU) in order to be a good bet.

Five of the top 10 ATS teams already have 10 or more SU losses, including Cleveland State (19-10 SU), which is tied with Wichita State for first with a 19-6-1 ATS mark. Tulsa (15-12 SU, 17-7 ATS), Nebraska (16-10 SU, 17-8 ATS), Pepperdine (15-13 SU, 17-8 ATS) and Portland (15-13 SU, 18-9-1 ATS) have all lost 10 or more SU while still getting the job done at the betting window.

Knicks' guard Felton arrested on gun charges

New York Knicks point guard Raymond Felton was arrested early Tuesday morning on three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Felton is expected to be arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the second, third and fourth degrees. The charges stem from Felton possessing an unregistered gun.

A Knicks spokesperson said the team had no immediate comment on the issue. The Knicks next game is Thursday at Miami.

The Magic can't do it on the road

The Orlando Magic have been pretty awful this year, but they have been even worse when you just look at their road record against the spread. The Magic are 9-20 ATS on the road this season, but they have not covered a road game since Dec. 16.

The Magic will get 9.5 points when the face the Wizards Tuesday.

Raptors and Cavaliers open with lowest line Tuesday

The Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers open with the lowest line on the NBA schedule Tuesday. In the last four meetings between these teams they have gone Under all four times and averaged 194.25 ppg.

The Raptors and Cavs open with an O/U of 192.5.
