Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack
-- Why teams lose; Purdue offered UCF QB Blake Bortles a scholarship out of high school…..as a linebacker. Now Bortles could be a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft in May.
-- Packers-49ers are meeting in playoff game for 7th time since 1995.
-- Only once in last 19 years have both #1 seeds made it to the Super Bowl, Saints-Colts four years ago.
-- Detroit Lions had the NFL’s highest payroll this year. Oy.
-- Wisconsin has been an underdog in its last eleven bowls; they’re favored over South Carolina this year.
-- Aaron Rodgers went to Butte Community College for a year because no one offered him a college scholarship; Illinois would’ve let him walk on, Florida State flat out rejected him. Go figure.
*****
Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Things to look for in 2014.......
13) College football playoff is going to be a huge deal; picking those four teams might very well make Twitter explode. You’re going to have a diverse committee of people picking those teams; going to be an interesting debate.
12) Instant replay in baseball is going to be dicier than you think; those neighborhood plays at second base on double plays are going to be challenged now, and some middle infielder is going to get hurt because he has to stay in there and make sure his foot is on the bag when he takes the throw.
11) NFL Draft is May 8-10; hoping the Rams reap another bonanza thanks to the RGIII trade, maybe even parlaying the Redskins’ top pick this year into even more draft picks down the road. It’s the formula Jimmy Johnson used to make the Cowboys a power.
10) Don’t take this the wrong way, but if the Super Bowl in Swamp Stadium goes really smoothly, they’ll be tempted to have more cold weather Super Bowls. Championship games should be played in as close to ideal conditions as possible. Some hideous weather on Ground Hog Day could discourage future cold weather Super Bowls.
9) I really hope DirecTV picks up Pac-12 Network; also curious to see what the SEC Network is going to look like when it kicks off next summer.
8) I can finally stop complaining about the FOX Saturday baseball Game of the Week blacking out all the other games played at the same time; if you have the MLB package, all Saturday afternoon games will be shown. About freakin’ time.
7) There is a movie coming out where Kevin Costner is GM of the Cleveland Browns and Denis Leary is Browns’ coach; this has the potential to be really good, especially Leary as the coach, if they let his character rant now and then.
6) I’m making an attempt at giving up soda (again) this year; did it from 2010 until early last year, but in an attempt to lose some weight, am trying again. Wish me well.
5) Mariners/Rangers both spent a fortune on free agent position players this winter; can the A’s win their third straight AL West title?
4) Pat Riley has a copyright on the term “three-peat”; will he capitalize on it this year, if his Miami Heat win their third NBA title in a row?
3) Which college basketball team will emerge from nowhere and become this March’s Florida Gulf Coast, the upstart Cinderella that takes down a big name team? The gap between the bigger schools and smaller schools is widening in college hoop and it will continue to do so until high school kids can go straight to the NBA, but upsets still happen now and then.
2) I’m hoping that 2014 is a year where this country figures out that free speech is an essential part of American life; if something offends you, block it out, but everyone has to have a right to express themselves. Its why God invented the mute button.
1) Hope you keep reading this website as we head towards the end of our 13th year on the Internet; I wish you health and happiness this year, and also a lot of winners.

NFL line watch: Bolts bettors should wait to charge
Spread to bet now
New Orleans Saints (+2.5) at Philadelphia Eagles
What you see is what you get with the early number in this one. Philadelphia opened up as a 2.5-point favorite and, with pretty much even wagering, that’s likely to hold firm. So if you’re waiting for this one to tip a half point either way, you most likely are out of luck.
As to the game, the spread seems to be too thin by about a point - especially considering that the Saints have not played one game this season in cold weather, which is invading the Northeast this week.
Did you think on Halloween night that the Eagles had a ghost of a chance of going 7-1 on the back nine? Only a defensive letdown in Minnesota sits between Philly and an eight-game winning streak. Andy Reid might still be in town if he had had more confidence in Nick Foles and less in Michael Vick.
Spread to wait on
San Diego Chargers (+7) at Cincinnati Bengals
Say what you want about Andy Dalton, but the kid is seventh in the league in passing yards and the Bengals have put up nearly 27 points a game (more than Seattle, San Francisco and Indianapolis) this season.
Just about a month ago the Bengals headed west and picked up a nice 17-10 win over San Diego in a defensive battle that was primarily played out between the 40 yard lines.
There has been decent early money on Cincinnati, even with the substantial line, but if the money gets serious come close to game time, they might be forced to either throw another half point more on the number.
San Diego backers, who like the way the Chargers have played on the road this season (wins at Denver, Kansas City and Philadelphia give the Bolts some significant street cred), could then swarm.
Total to watch
Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts (46.5)
You can build a legitimate case for this one going Under based on the game that these teams played in Kansas City a little more than a week ago. The Colts’ defense put the hammer down on Kansas City’s offense, holding the Chiefs to just about 300 total yards.
But the Chiefs were crushed by turnovers in that game. Three fumbles were lost, and K.C. recovered three more of its own bobbles. Alex Smith also threw an interception.
All that won’t happen the second time around. The Chiefs should be fresh (most starters sat out the regular season finale) and figure to move the ball. Adjustments will be made and there should be some points scored in this one.

NHL Winter Classic: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings (-125, 5)
The "Big House" will be filled to the brim on New Year's Day as the Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL's Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium. With an expected record crowd in upwards of 106,000 at the outdoor stadium, the sputtering Original Six foes will likely have a snowy backdrop to the latest installment of their long-standing rivalry. The same stadium also witnessed the highest recorded attendance in ice hockey history when 104,173 people watched as Michigan cruised to a 5-0 triumph over rival Michigan State on Dec. 11, 2010.
There have been seven outdoor NHL games - five Winter Classic games and two Heritage Classic games - producing a 2-5 Over/Under record. The Winter Classic games have gone 1-4 O/U with the most recent outdoor venue producing a 3-2 win for the New York Rangers over the Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park on Jan. 2, 2012.
While many are coming to see a show, both Eastern Conference representatives have struggled as of late - Toronto has lost seven of its last 11 (4-5-2) while Detroit has dropped eight in that span (3-6-2). Despite his team's struggles, Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf has every reason to smile after signing a seven-year contract extension worth $49 million on Tuesday. "It was an easy decision for me to stay here and be a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs," the 28-year-old defenseman said with wife/actress Elisha Cuthbert in tow. "I think we're building something special."
TV: 1 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS
WEATHER: The forecast in Ann Arbor is calling for snow showers starting before gametime and continuing all day with temperatures in a mid teens and winds blowing NE at 10 mph.
ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (20-16-5): Phil Kessel scored twice to reach the 20-goal plateau for the sixth straight season as Toronto skated to a 5-2 victory over reeling Carolina on Sunday. The 26-year-old Wisconsin native has recorded back-to-back multi-point performances and collected four goals and four assists in seven career contests versus Detroit. Phaneuf, who scored against the Hurricanes, also tallied in Toronto's 5-4 shootout loss to Detroit on Dec. 21.
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (18-14-9): While Canada and the European nations will wait until Jan. 7 to announce their Olympic rosters, the United States will do so immediately following the Winter Classic. Although the Detroit Free Press already reported that Jimmy Howard will join Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick and Buffalo's Ryan Miller as goaltenders for Team USA, the Detroit netminder officially will learn his fate mere moments after the contest. Russian star Pavel Datsyuk scored in the first meeting versus the Maple Leafs and also tallied in a 6-4 loss to Nashville on Monday.
TRENDS:
* Over is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.
* Home team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
* Maple Leafs are 1-10 in their last 11 road games.
* Over is 7-1 in Maple Leafs last eight games following a win.
OVERTIME:
1. Wednesday's crowd is expected to dwarf the largest attendance for an NHL game (71,217), which occurred during the 2008 Winter Classic at the home stadium of the Buffalo Bills.
2. Detroit RW Daniel Alfredsson scored the shootout-winning goal on Dec. 21. The veteran tested his balky back on Tuesday but left his availability in doubt as he exited without speaking to reporters.
3. Toronto LW James Van Riemsdyk, who is expected to join Kessel on Team USA, has collected three assists in his last four games.
