                        • Preview: Flames (15-24) at Hurricanes (19-17)

                          Date: January 13, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Finally seeing the puck go in the net was a relief for the Calgary Flames, even if they weren't able to pull out a victory.

After having their winning streak snapped, the Carolina Hurricanes could have captain Eric Staal back when they look to deal visiting Calgary a fourth straight loss Monday night.

The Flames (15-24-6) were shut out in five of their previous seven games before ending their scoreless stretch at 174:59 as Mikael Backlund scored in the third period Saturday against Pittsburgh.

"It's hard when you chase and chase and you get scoring chances and the puck doesn't go in,' Backlund said. 'It gets in your head a little bit. It shouldn't, but it's natural.

'As soon as you score one, everybody settles down a little bit and you feel better.'

Backlund's goal wasn't enough, though, as Calgary lost 2-1 for its seventh defeat in eight games.

'On the mental side (scoring a goal) is good, but it's another loss,' coach Bob Hartley said "'But I can't fault the effort. (Saturday) was by far one of our best games lately.'

The Flames failed to convert on five power-play chances and dropped to 1 for 26 with the man advantage over their last eight.

'If we could have scored a couple power-play goals, we could have won the game. That was the difference,' Backlund said. 'We had a few power-play opportunities and we didn't score, and it's been like that for a while.'

Backlund assisted on Chris Butler's goal in overtime as Calgary beat Carolina 2-1 on Dec. 12.

The Hurricanes also were held in check offensively Friday, when they fell 3-0 at Columbus. Jeff Skinner had seven goals and five assists during a seven-game point streak that was snapped.

The defeat ended a five-game winning streak for Carolina (19-17-9), which played for the third straight time without Staal due to a lower-body injury suffered Jan. 4 against the New York Islanders.

Staal, who leads the Hurricanes with 25 assists, practiced Sunday and could return for this contest.

"We're going to see how I respond after a good practice today and how I feel (Monday)," Staal told the team's official website. "I'm feeling good now, and it's getting better. It was smart to take a step back when I did."

Carolina has four days off before its next contest against Florida on Saturday, and coach Kirk Muller is not going to rush Staal back if his captain needs more rest.

"We've got to see how he responds. We want to be smart," Muller said. "We have all the days off after that, so we want to make sure if he's ready to go (Monday), it's nothing that sets him back."

Cam Ward hasn't played since Dec. 31 because of a lower-body injury, but Anton Khudobin has filled in nicely, going 4-1-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average since Ward went down.

Khudobin made 21 saves Friday and could be in net for his first career start against the Flames, who may counter with Karri Ramo after Reto Berra made 24 saves in the second of a back-to-back set Saturday.

Ramo is 1-3-2 with a 3.31 GAA over his last six starts, but he made 29 saves in the first meeting with the Hurricanes.

                          Calgary hasn't visited Carolina since a 6-5 shootout win Jan. 11, 2011.

                          • Preview: Lightning (27-14) at Blue Jackets (21-20)

                            Date: January 13, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning are thriving on the road while the Columbus Blue Jackets are also playing some of their best hockey.

The Blue Jackets seek a season-high fourth straight win Monday night against a Lightning team that has won seven of eight road games.

Tampa Bay (27-14-4) won 6-3 over Philadelphia on Saturday to continue its strong road play. Ryan Malone scored twice and Matt Carle and B.J. Crombeen each had two assists.

'We have a good thing going on the road lately and we hope to keep it going,' defenseman Andrej Sustr said.

The Lightning's impressive run on the road followed a 0-5-2 stretch away from Tampa Bay.

'When we lost seven in a row, we had some adversity, but we had some guys injured and those were tough buildings to play in,' said winger Martin St. Louis, who scored against the Flyers.

Columbus (21-20-4) can record its first four-game win streak since a five-game run in April that was part of a 8-1-0 surge to close the season.

Boone Jenner and Mark Letestu each scored twice in Saturday's 6-3 win at Winnipeg. Jenner also had a goal in Friday's 3-0 victory over Carolina.

'We believe in ourselves in here and we know when we play the way that we can, things will go our way and we've just got to keep focused on that,' Jenner said.

Sergei Bobrovsky figures to be back in goal after he started versus the Hurricanes and Curtis McElhinney got the nod against the Jets.

Both saw action in the Blue Jackets' 1-0 home victory over the Lightning on Dec. 3. Bobrovsky faced 18 shots before leaving with a groin injury that kept him out for a month.

Coach Todd Richards would like to see his team play better in front of his goalies.

"We've got to start playing full games," Richards said. "We've relied on our goaltender a few times too many."

Ben Bishop made 20 saves for Tampa Bay in the first meeting, allowing only Nick Foligno's goal in the second period. Bishop has missed three straight games with a sprained right wrist but could return Monday.

If Bishop doesn't play, Anders Lindback figures to make his fourth straight start. Lindback has never faced Columbus.

Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman will likely play after he suffered a head injury against the Flyers.

Hedman's fellow defenseman Carle has totaled eight points in a career-best six-game streak.

St. Louis reached the 20-goal plateau for the 10th time. He had eight points in a six-game run against the Blue Jackets before last month's meeting.

'You try to prepare the best you can to help the team win and to score 20 goals is something I'm proud of,' St. Louis said.

Columbus newcomer Nathan Horton has gone four straight games without a goal after scoring in his club debut Jan. 2 after offseason shoulder surgery. Lightning fans will be wary of Horton, a former Florida winger whose 26 goals against Tampa Bay are his most against any opponent.

                            • Preview: Coyotes (21-14) at Jets (19-23)

                              Date: January 13, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

A fifth straight loss sealed Claude Noel's fate as coach of the Winnipeg Jets.

Now, it'll be up to Paul Maurice to begin turning around their season.

Maurice will make his debut behind the bench Monday night when the last-place Jets try to end their skid against the sputtering Phoenix Coyotes.

Winnipeg (19-23-5) has missed the playoffs in its first two seasons since relocating from Atlanta, falling short by just four points in 2012-13 when it was still in the Eastern Conference. However, the team has dropped into the Central Division cellar after moving to the West.

The Jets have shown few signs of improvement, especially lately. They've dropped a season-high five games in a row while surrendering 24 goals, and were booed off the ice at MTS Centre after falling 6-3 to Columbus on Saturday.

That was enough for them to dismiss Noel and assistant Perry Pearn on Sunday.

"I think it always comes as a shock," captain Andrew Ladd said. "I don't think anyone expected it. Two good people lose their job. Ultimately, it came down to the performance of all the guys in here. It's tough for everyone."

Noel was hired after the Jets moved to Winnipeg, compiling an 80-79-18 record. He's being replaced by Maurice, who agreed to a deal for the remainder of the season.

Maurice previously coached the Hartford/Carolina franchise during two separate stints and Toronto. In 15 seasons behind the bench, Maurice's teams have qualified for the playoffs four times, with the Hurricanes reaching the Stanley Cup finals in 2002.

He hasn't been in the NHL since being fired by Carolina in November 2011, and spent last season with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL.

Maurice is inheriting a team that's on the verge of six straight defeats for the first time since March 6-14, 2010. The Jets are among the league's worst defensively (3.00 goals per game) and on the power play (15.0 percent).

"All of us should be embarrassed that we're at the point we have to change the coach," center Olli Jokinen said.

The change could mean Dustin Byfuglien will return to defense after Noel moved him to right wing against the Blue Jackets. He had an assist on a power-play goal by Bryan Little while playing on the top line, which also includes Ladd.

Byfuglien's 35 points are one back of Little for the team lead.

Blake Wheeler leads Winnipeg with 16 goals, but was demoted to the third line with Jokinen on Saturday. The right wing, recently named to the U.S. Olympic team, has one goal and one assist with a minus-6 rating in his last six games.

He has an assist in each of the last two meetings with Phoenix. One of them came on Little's goal in a 1-0 win Dec. 1, 2011, ending a six-game slide in the series. That was also the Coyotes' first visit to Winnipeg since leaving for Phoenix in 1996.

The Coyotes have lost four of five after falling 5-3 to Anaheim on Saturday as they concluded a six-game homestand.

"We're not a very cohesive group right now," coach Dave Tippett said. "When you chase games all the time you look like an out-of-sort group, and that's where we are."

Martin Hanzal has been a bright spot of late, scoring five goals with five assists in his last 11 games, getting one of each Saturday. The center's 13 goals are three shy of his career high set in 2010-11, but he has just one assist in two games against the Jets.

Shane Doan has 10 points in 11 games against the Jets/Thrashers franchise, but he was held without a point in the latest matchup. He spent his rookie season with the first iteration of the Jets in 1995-96 after being drafted seventh overall.

                              • Preview: Canucks (24-13) at Kings (27-14)

                                Date: January 13, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Kings can record their fourth win over the Vancouver Canucks in a single season for the first time in 23 years. But given their recent offensive struggles, they might need another strong performance from Jonathan Quick to accomplish the feat.

Los Angeles hopes to back Quick with more goals Monday night against visiting Vancouver.

The Kings (27-14-5) have won all three meetings thus far, including two matchups at home by a combined 8-2 score. In a 3-1 victory on Jan. 4, Los Angeles outshot the Canucks 49-28 and Jeff Carter scored two goals.

After being out since Nov. 12 with a strained groin, Quick returned against the Canucks and stopped 27 shots to help the Kings' end a five-game losing streak. He's saved 64 of 67 shots in his last three starts versus Vancouver.

Los Angeles, which hasn't beaten Vancouver four times in a single season since going 5-3-0 in 1990-91, comes off a 3-1 home loss to Detroit on Saturday, its seventh defeat in nine games. The Kings outshot the Red Wings 45-26, marking their third straight loss in which they outshot their opponent. They claimed a 40-17 advantage in a 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Tuesday.

Drew Doughty's first-period power-play goal was just the second for Los Angeles on 21 chances with the man advantage over the last five games.

"We outshot them, but we had some scoring opportunities that we didn't get a good shot off,' center Anze Kopitar said. "We were trying to do too much, and in a situation like that, we've got to make sure we get a good shot off so that whoever's a couple of feet from the net can try to get the rebound. We just have to bear down a lot better."

The Kings have scored two or fewer goals seven times over the last nine games. Justin Williams and Kopitar - their second- and third-leading scorers - have combined for just four goals during that stretch.

"You can't win every game 1-0 or 2-1," Williams said. "Certainly we had enough chances to win the game tonight, but we didn't do it. The onus is on us to put the puck in the back of the net."

The Canucks (24-13-9), who are two points behind Los Angeles for third place in the Pacific Division, ended a five-game skid with a 2-1 home win over St. Louis on Friday.

Coach John Tortorella seemed to strike gold with his decision to promote Zac Dalpe from the fourth line to the first to play with the Sedin twins while Mike Santorelli was switched out to the fourth line. Dalpe scored the game's first goal early in the second period, while Santorelli broke a 1-1 tie with his 10th goal of the season in the third.

"I wasn't good enough early on," said Santorelli, who hadn't registered a point during the losing streak while posting a minus-6 rating. "Too many turnovers, so (the demotion to the fourth line) was deserving."

Vancouver had surrendered at least four goals four times during its losing streak before Eddie Lack made 30 saves in place of the injured Roberto Luongo.

"It stops the bleeding for a day or two,' said Tortorella, who was coaching the 900th game of his career. "Hopefully this will help us a little bit as we try and get some traction."
