NHL Top 3: Injury-plagued teams getting healthy
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Often NHL teams can fall behind due to early-season injuries but once those players get healthy and return, there is value in betting them when the books are still treating them like a losing team. Here are three teams that have recently returned key players and could show added value to the NHL moneylines.

    Detroit Red Wings (20-16-3-7)

The Red Wings are without star players Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Daniel Alfredsson, and Henrik Zetterberg all because of injuries. Detroit is trying to stay competitive in the Atlantic, however, its 1-7 shootout record shows that without these playmakers the Wings will continue to fall behind in the standings.

These players are slowly making their returns, and their replacements are cooking up chemistry and winning some games on their own. With Jimmy Howard back between the pipes, the Red Wings will likely improve on their minus-9 goal against differential.

    Florida Panthers (17-21-2-5)

Veteran defenseman Ed Jovanovski missed 83 games dating back to last season since undergoing hip surgery and has sparked Florida to a 2-2 record since his return. Left winger Sean Bergenheim missed 10 games with a lower-body injury but is back in the lineup and has six goals in his last eight games.

Goaltender Tim Thomas, who has been battling injuries all season, has only played 26 games with a .916 save percentage and 2.57 GAA. With these three players being eased back into the lineup, the Panthers could climb out of the Eastern Conference basement and present big moneyline value in upcoming games.

    Phoenix Coyotes (21-15-5-4)

The Coyotes were one of the most hyped teams going in the season. Despite a solid start, they find themselves falling behind in the Pacific Division, and injuries are a big reason for that slide. With team leader Shane Doan out for almost an entire month due to illness, the physical play of the Coyotes disappeared.

Phoenix struggled without left winger Lauri Korpikoski's speed and penalty-kill presence, with the Finland native playing in just 29 games due to an upper-body injury. The Coyotes are 26th in the league in penalty kill (77.9 percent) and are the only team without a short-handed goal. Now that these two are back, Phoenix may be able to stop the bleeding when down a man.

Kings at Blues: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues (-137, 5)

Goals are expected to be at a premium when the St. Louis Blues host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night in a matchup of the league's top two defensive clubs. St. Louis has surrendered two or fewer goals in eight consecutive games during its current 8-1-0 stretch to climb within two points of Central Division-leading Chicago with two games in hand. The Blues ended a five-game losing streak in the series (playoffs included) with a 5-0 thrashing of the visiting Kings on Jan. 2.

Los Angeles enters a critical portion of its schedule while attempting to win back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game run from Dec. 17-21. The Kings will play five straight and seven of their next eight contests on the road, with the only home game during that span coming against league-best Anaheim. Los Angeles is coming off a brawl-filled 1-0 win over Vancouver behind Jonathan Quick's 27th career shutout - his first since returning from a 24-game injury absence.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN2

LINE: The Blues opened 143 and are now -137.

ABOUT THE KINGS (28-14-5): With Quick healthy, Los Angeles made a move to address its cluttered goaltending situation by trading Ben Scrivens to Edmonton in exchange for a third-round pick in this year's draft. Scrivens, who made 10 consecutive starts after Quick was injured and went 7-5-4 with a 1.97 goals-against average in 19 games this season, could see more playing time after the Oilers dealt away goatender Devan Dubnyk. Rookie Martin Jones, the second netminder in league history to win his first eight starts, was recalled from Manchester of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE BLUES (32-8-5): Brian Elliott had ripped off seven straight wins, including a 30-save shutout against the Kings two weeks ago, before a 2-1 defeat in Vancouver last Friday. Still, coach Ken Hitchcock is opting to go with Jaroslov Halak in net versus Los Angeles and will start Elliott in Saturday's showdown against visiting Anaheim. "I'm not sure," Hitchcock said of his reasoning for the netminder rotation. "Brian has played well, Jaro has played really well, both guys deserve to keep playing so we're going to keep playing both guys."

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
        * Kings are 0-6 in their last six vs. Central.
        * Kings are 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
        * Blues are 4-1 in their last five vs. Pacific.

        OVERTIME:

        1. St. Louis allowed a power-play goal in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Phoenix, its only one in 21 chances over the past seven games.

        2. Kings D Matt Greene with not accompany the team on the road trip after suffering an upper-body injury in a fight Monday night.

        3. Los Angeles has allowed a league-low 96 goals while the Blues are next with 100.

                  • Preview: Capitals (22-17) at Blue Jackets (22-20)

                    Date: January 17, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Their longest winning streak of the season has the Columbus Blue Jackets gaining confidence.

The Washington Capitals are also on the verge of matching a season-high streak - something they would prefer to avoid.

Seeking their fifth consecutive victory Friday night, the host Blue Jackets look to end a five-game losing streak to the Capitals, who will be trying to avert a season high-tying fourth straight defeat.

Columbus (22-20-4) beat Tampa Bay 3-2 on Monday for its fifth victory in six games in the new year, as Mark Letestu redirected Jack Johnson's shot from the point with 2:38 left for the winning goal. It was the Blue Jackets' second power-play goal of the third period as they rallied for their longest run of 2013-14.

'We got our game back,' coach Todd Richards said about the step up after a dismal second period. 'To me, that's a sign of the character you're looking for from your group. Teams are going to make pushes, get some momentum in the game ... but I like the way we went after it in the third period.'

Columbus outshot Tampa Bay 11-7 in the third after the Lightning held a 12-7 advantage in the second.

Forward Nathan Horton scored his 200th career goal to pull the Blue Jackets even in the final period. Horton, who missed the first 40 games this season while recovering from shoulder surgery after joining the team as a free agent last summer, has two goals and two assists in six contests since debuting Jan. 2.

'We showed some character coming back,' Horton said. 'That's what we (got) when we needed it most.'

Washington (22-17-8) will need some as well as it looks to avoid another loss. The Capitals fell 4-3 to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, getting outshot 37-28 and allowing two straight Penguins goals - the final one with 1:54 left - after taking the lead on Alex Ovechkin's 34th goal at 8:35 of the third.

"We figured out a way to lose it tonight," coach Adam Oates told the team's official website. "We had two chances (to win it), two chances in the third, and (we made) too many mistakes on both goals."

Washington had scored one goal in each of its previous two defeats - both in shootouts - and has gone 2-3-4 in its last nine. The Capitals, winners of the Southeast Division last season, are 18 points behind first-place Pittsburgh in the newly formed Metropolitan Division.

"We did a lot of good things in the game. And obviously, you get tired of saying that too, especially when we blow it," Oates said. "Tonight we played a good game and we figured out a way to get leads in the third against a fresher team, and we didn't sustain it. You have to be able to."

Maybe Friday's matchup will allow Oates' club to get back on track. Washington has gone 5-0-1 in the last six in the series, taking both meetings of 2013-14 at home in the teams' first season as division rivals.

Ovechkin scored for the second straight game and third time in four Wednesday, and he has four goals and three assists in his past seven. He's scored in each of the last three meetings with Columbus, recording four goals in that span.

Letestu has three goals in his last two contests.

                    • Preview: Ducks (36-8) at Blackhawks (30-8)

                      Date: January 17, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

(AP) - By the time the Anaheim Ducks finished with them late Wednesday night, the Vancouver Canucks had a humiliating 9-1 loss and four players in the dressing room after they tried to start fights out of pure frustration.

It's an awfully tough time to face the NHL's best team, as the beleaguered Canucks will attest once they recover from the thrashing. The Ducks reign atop the league at 36-8-5 after winning 18 of their last 19 games, including eight straight, during one of the most dominant runs in league history.

It's even tougher to visit Honda Center, where Anaheim has gone 20-0-2 with 10 straight wins to match the NHL's longest season-opening home point streak in 34 years. The Ducks now head out on the road for a quick weekend trip, starting with Friday night's matchup with fellow powerhouse Chicago.

'We know we've got a good team,' Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf said. 'But we also know we can't stop proving it.'

Out in sunny Southern California, thousands of miles away from hockey's traditional spotlights, the Ducks have soared to the best start in their two-decade history - even better than in their Stanley Cup campaign in 2006-07. They've built a big lead in the tough Pacific Division, and they even lead the defending champion Blackhawks (30-8-11) by six points.

With four quality scoring lines led by Getzlaf and Corey Perry in front of a versatile defense and Jonas Hiller's standout goaltending, the dynamic Ducks have lost just once since Dec. 3.

'It's pretty amazing what we've done,' said 43-year-old Teemu Selanne, who scored two goals against the Canucks. 'Everything we do is building the confidence we're going to need down the road.'

Sure, the Ducks realize their 49-game start means nothing without the playoff success that has eluded the franchise since 2007. They're still taking quiet satisfaction in the NHL's longest run of one-loss play since the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens won a record 20 of 21.

'We're not getting too excited about it,' coach Bruce Boudreau said. 'I've been in this position before, and when you don't come out with the Holy Grail, people don't really care what happened in the regular season. Our goal is to be the best in the regular season, and hopefully it carries on into the playoffs, and we're the best there.'

The Ducks have surpassed last season's remarkable turnaround under Boudreau, who has built another powerhouse after four years of regular-season success in Washington.

Anaheim finished second in the Western Conference last spring after missing the playoffs in 2012, but the Ducks lost to Detroit in the first round when they couldn't overcome the playoff-tested Red Wings' postseason grit.

'I think we're more equipped for this now,' said Perry, the NHL's second-leading goal-scorer after getting his 26th and 27th against Vancouver. 'We knew what we wanted to do this season.'

Although Boudreau warns his players against reading or hearing about their success, new superlatives pop up after every victory: The Ducks have scored the most goals (166) and allowed the fewest (116) through 49 games in club history.

Hiller is on a personal 14-game winning streak, matching the second-longest single-season run in NHL history. He's helped by a defense that has been surprisingly effective despite the long-term injury absences of several expected regulars, including Sheldon Souray and Luca Sbisa.

But the Ducks are at their most sublime on offense, with Getzlaf and Perry producing spectacular play in the first year of lucrative eight-season contract extensions. Forwards Andrew Cogliano, Nick Bonino, Dustin Penner and Mathieu Perreault are all having standout statistical seasons - and in an example of the Ducks' balance, they're usually playing on four different lines.

The Ducks realize they're mathematically unlikely to keep rolling all the way to the postseason. They would have to beat Chicago and powerful St. Louis on Saturday to equal the 1968 Canadiens' run, and the Olympic break poses a potential hazard to their groove.

But the Ducks will enjoy this run for as long as it lasts before the chance to turn their attention to a postseason run at a second Stanley Cup title for Getzlaf, Perry and Selanne.

'I've seen a lot of great teams peak early, but if you go through a bad time, then you still know what you've got,' Boudreau said. 'People say, `Oh, you've got to have some adversity to fight through it.' If you don't mind, I don't want to lose five or six in a row.'

Anaheim has won five straight in this series and handed the Blackhawks three of their 12 total regular-season losses in last year's run to the Stanley Cup.

Chicago enters this matchup with at least one point earned in 17 of its last 19 games, but it's 1-1-3 in the past five after losing 3-2 in overtime to Colorado at home Tuesday.

The Blackhawks have dropped their last seven games that have gone past regulation, dating to a 2-1 shootout win in Dallas on Nov. 29. They are 4-11 in games that last longer than 60 minutes, going 0-5 in overtime and 4-6 in shootouts.

One of those defeats was a 3-2 shootout loss to the visiting Ducks on Dec. 6.

'It is a frustrating game, but we'll stay with it and we know we can build off (Tuesday's) effort and start playing better hockey than we have been the last few games,' captain Jonathan Toews said.
