      December 9, 2013

Warriors at Bobcats - 7:05 PM EST

Golden State: 12-9 SU, 10-9-2 ATS
      Charlotte: 9-11 SU, 12-7-1 ATS

The Warriors wrap up a three-game road trip tonight after splitting the first two contests at Houston and Memphis. Golden State has played six of its last seven games away from the Bay Area, but put together its most complete performance of this span with a blowout of the Grizzlies on Saturday, 108-82 to snap an 11-game skid against Memphis. The Warriors have drilled the 'under' in six of the past eight road contests, while playing only their second Eastern Conference squad on the highway.

In spite of a below .500 record, the Bobcats have turned into one of the more competitive teams in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte is 10-5-1 ATS as an underdog this season, but owns a 1-4 SU/ATS the last five opportunities in the home 'dog role. The Bobcats' defense has stepped up all season, while posting a 6-0-1 mark to the 'under' the last seven games at Time Warner Cable Arena.

      Clippers at 76ers - 7:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 13-8 SU, 11-10 ATS
      Philadelphia: 7-14 SU, 9-12 ATS

The Clippers continue a seven-game road swing as L.A. tries to rebound off an 88-82 defeat at Cleveland on Saturday as six-point favorites. Los Angeles was limited to 32% shooting from the floor at Cleveland, while scoring a season-low 82 points. The Clips have done a solid job of bouncing back off a loss this season by going 5-2 SU/ATS, including a 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS mark on the road.

The 76ers have lost eight of their past 10 games, with the only two wins in this span coming in overtime. Philadelphia was trounced by Denver on Saturday, 103-92, as star rookie Michael Carter-Williams missed his sixth game of the season due to injury (1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS). The Sixers have failed to cover in each of their last six games, while giving up at least 100 points in nine consecutive contests.

Nuggets at Wizards - 7:05 PM EST

      Denver: 12-8 SU, 11-9 ATS
      Washington: 9-10 SU, 10-9 ATS

The Nuggets finish off their six-game highway swing in the Nation's Capital tonight after snapping a two-game skid in Saturday's triumph at Philadelphia. Denver has posted a 3-2 SU/ATS record on this trip, while the previous five teams all own records below .500 on the season. Brian Shaw's team has won 11 of its past 15 games following a 1-4 start, while limiting five of their last six opponents to fewer than 100 points.

The Wizards have won seven of their past 10 contests, despite coming off an overtime loss to Milwaukee on Friday night. Washington has captured both games in the role of a home underdog this season, beating Brooklyn and Minnesota, while winning five of its previous six games at the Verizon Center. The Wizards surprisingly pulled off a season sweep of the Nuggets last season, while putting up 112 and 119 points in the two wins.

Magic at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

      Orlando: 6-14 SU, 10-10 ATS
      Memphis: 9-10 SU, 6-12-1 ATS

Orlando has turned into a disappearing act on the road this season, losing nine of 10 games away from central Florida, including last night's 98-88 defeat at Houston. The Magic managed a cover as 13-point underdogs, but Orlando is riding a five-game losing streak, while scoring 91 points or less four times in this span.

The Grizzlies are coming off back-to-back home blowout losses to the Warriors and Clippers, while averaging 81.5 points in those defeats. Home has not been kind to Memphis recently, as the Grizzlies have lost six of their past seven games at FedEx Forum, while scoring 88 points or less in each setback. The good news for Memphis is this team has not lost three straight games this season, snapping a pair of two-game skids with the wins over the Lakers and Celtics last month.

Blazers at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST

      Portland: 17-4 SU, 15-6 ATS
      Utah: 4-18 SU, 9-12-1 ATS

The Blazers are coming off their fourth loss of the season after losing at the buzzer to Dallas on Saturday night. Portland hasn't dropped consecutive games this season, as the Blazers routed the Jazz on Friday, 130-98, while drilling 17 three-pointers in the blowout. The Blazers have finished 'over' the total in six of the last seven road contests, while going 8-0 on the highway against any team not named Phoenix (0-2 vs. Suns).

Utah blew a late lead in Saturday's overtime home defeat to Sacramento, but the Jazz has fared better as a home 'dog this season. Although Utah is 5-5 ATS when receiving points at home, the Jazz has beaten the Bulls, Rockets, and Pelicans in the home 'dog role. Tyrone Corbin's team is riding a 5-1 run to the 'over' the last six games, while allowing at least 103 points five times in this span.

Mavericks at Kings - 10:05 PM EST

      Dallas: 13-8 SU, 11-10 ATS
      Sacramento: 5-13 SU, 6-11-1 ATS

The Mavericks are starting to pick things up of late by winning three in a row, including road triumphs at New Orleans and Portland. Dallas has won and covered two of three games in the away favorite role, but the Mavs have failed to cash in their last five 'chalk' opportunities. Rick Carlisle's squad is just 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS on the road off a win, as the Mavs have been listed as a favorite once in this situation, a one-point loss at Atlanta.

The Kings made waves on Sunday by pulling off a major trade which sends Rudy Gay from Toronto to Sacramento in a seven-player deal. Gay will not suit up for the Kings tonight, as Sacramento has lost four consecutive games at Sleep Train Arena. Sacramento did snap its six-game skid on Saturday with an overtime triumph at Utah, but the Kings have won back-to-back contests only once this season.

Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 1 to 7.

Hottest ATS - Detroit Pistons (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Pistons have really revved up their game of late, winning four games in a row, which included a three game road trip with stops in Miami and Chicago. Detroit has now covered in six of the past eight games and are in second place in the Central Division. Andre Drummond has been an absolute monster for the Pistons during the winning streak, averaging 18.3 points and 17.5 rebounds per game. This week the Pistons host a rematch with the Heat, then they face off against Minnesota at home, before heading on the road to take on New Orleans and then Brooklyn back at home.

        Coldest ATS - Philadelphia 76ers (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS)

After the 76ers impressive start to the season, they have really struggled of late, winning only once in their past seven games and they haven't covered the spread six games in a row. On defense the Sixers are giving up a league worst 110.2 points per game and are the second to last team in the league when it comes to defensive rebounding. At the offensive end the Sixers are really struggling to sink the 3-ball, only shooting 32 percent from downtown. This week the Sixers host the L.A. Clippers, then go on the road to face Minnesota and Toronto, before returning home to take on Portland.

Best Over play - Portland Trail Blazers (4-1 SU, 5-0 O/U)

The Blazers continue to play great basketball after notching wins against top contenders Oklahoma City and Indiana this week. Portland now sits atop the Northwest Division with a 17-4 record and are the second highest scoring team in the NBA, netting 106.2 points per game. In fact, they also rank in the top 10 in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, free throw percentage and offensive rebounds per game. The Blazers will look to hit the Over for the seventh time in a row this week when they take on Utah, before matchups with Houston and Philadelphia.

Best Under play - Charlotte Bobcats (1-2 SU, 1-2 O/U)

Despite the fact the Bobcats hit the over once this week, they are still the best Under play in the NBA this season and are the best Under play in Bank Shots two weeks in a row. The Bobcats have done this by going 11-1-1 O/U in their last 13 games and that trend should still be a solid play going forward thanks to their combination of good defense and lousy offense. The Bobcats are second in the league in points against per game at 91.5, but are dead last in points per game, field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. This week the Bobcats face Golden State, Orlando, Indiana and the L.A. Lakers.

        Surveying the Schedule:

Can we just fast forward to the Eastern Conference Final please? The Miami Heat at 15-5 and the Indiana Pacers at 18-2 are clearly the class of the conference and it would be nice if we could skip past all these needless regular season games and jump straight to the playoffs. The two teams meet on Tuesday in Miami for the first time since the Heat eliminated the Pacers in last year's conference finals. The Heat are 10-10 ATS and 11-9 O/U, while the Pacers are now a league best 15-5 ATS and 7-13 O/U.

                    Heat, Pacers clash

                    December 10, 2013

Miami Heat (16-5) at Indiana Pacers (18-3)

                    Sportsbook.ag Line: Indiana -3.5, Total: 190

Two of the Eastern Conference’s elite teams square off on Tuesday night when the Heat wrap up their four-game road trip versus the Pacers.

Miami defeated the Pistons 110-95 on Sunday to win its second straight road game both SU and ATS, but that same night Indiana got destroyed by the Thunder 118-94 in the second game of a road back-to-back.

The Pacers and Heat have not met since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals last season where Miami rolled to a 99-76 home win despite shooting just 39.5% FG. Over the past three seasons, the Pacers are 10-10 ATS (8-12 SU) in this series, including 6-4 (SU and ATS) when hosting the Heat.

As the coach of Miami, Erik Spoelstra is 27-12 ATS (69%) in road games after two straight double-digit wins. Indiana, however, is 12-3 ATS (80%) as a favorite this season and 22-7 ATS (76%) off a road loss over the past two seasons.

On the injury front, shooting guard Dwyane Wade (knee) will likely play in this game for Miami, but small forward Michael Beasley (hamstring) is questionable.

Miami has bounced back from a two-game losing skid with two wins in a row over the Timberwolves and Pistons, outshooting these two clubs 55% FG to 36% FG. The Heat have played great team basketball to start the year despite being without Dwyane Wade at times this season.

Miami is averaging 23.9 APG (5th in NBA), which has helped lead to 103.5 PPG (6th in league). The defense has also been stellar, as the Heat are allowing just 95.9 PPG (6th in NBA). LeBron James has played at an MVP level once again this season, leading the team in points (25.4 PPG), rebounds (6.2 RPG) and assists (6.3 APG). He also dominated Indiana in the playoffs with 29.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.4 SPG and 1.4 BPG in the seven-game series.

Miami will need Chris Bosh (14.1 PPG, 6.0 RPG) to play better as the Pacers have one of the best frontcourts in the league. Bosh has struggled shooting the ball over the past three games, averaging just 11.3 PPG on 41% FG (0-of-6 threes), and was held to 11.0 PPG on 38% FG and 4.3 RPG in the playoffs versus Indiana.

Wade (18.5 PPG, 5.3 APG, 4.7 RPG) must also play well for the Heat against this relentless Pacers defense, but Wade may be a bit sluggish after missing three of the Heat’s past four games. Wade had an inconsistent series versus Indiana, but still averaged a solid 15.4 PPG, 5.1 RPG and 4.3 APG in the seven games.

Indiana is 18-3 SU (15-6 ATS), but lost its most recent game to the Thunder in pretty horrific fashion, getting outshot 61% FG to 40% FG. Still, the Pacers are one of the toughest teams in the league and will be a very difficult matchup for the Heat, who lack an interior presence. Indiana has the league’s best defense, allowing an NBA-low 89.5 PPG on 40.8% FG, while ranking sixth in the league in rebounding margin (+3.2 RPG).

Paul George (25.1 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 3.4 APG) has been outstanding this season, and over the past five games, he's averaging 29.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.6 APG and 2.0 SPG. His length makes life on LeBron James a little tougher than usual, and he had a huge East Finals last year with 19.4 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 5.1 APG, but also committed 32 turnovers in the seven games.

Center Roy Hibbert (12.4 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 3.1 BPG) will draw Chris Bosh on defense and he should be able to take advantage of that matchup, as his 7-foot-2, 290-pound frame will be overwhelming. Hibbert had little trouble scoring on the small Miami lineup in the playoffs with 22.1 PPG (56% FG), 10.4 RPG in the seven-game series.

Point guard George Hill (11.7 PPG, 3.9 APG) has a very winnable matchup against Mario Chalmers at the point guard position, but he has struggled recently with only 8.7 PPG and 2.0 APG over the past three games. Hill must find his stroke (40% FG this season) to make the Heat pay for double-teaming Hibbert or power forward David West (12.8 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 3.1 APG), who tallied 16.6 PPG and 8.9 RPG against Miami in the East Finals.

                              Tuesday, December 10

Heat at Pacers: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (-3, 189)

The Indiana Pacers just completed a five-game road trip that put them up against some of the top teams in the Western Conference. Their reward for posting a 3-2 record on that excursion is a return home to host the defending champion Miami Heat on Tuesday. Indiana took the Heat to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals last spring before falling just short and has been waiting for another crack at LeBron James and company.

While some of the Pacers players were upset with the way the road trip ended - a 118-94 loss at Oklahoma City - coach Frank Vogel saw the trip as a positive overall. “It was a good trip,” Vogel said. “You’re playing four of the top teams in the Western Conference in their building, two of them on the second night of a back-to-back, on a nine-day trip. That’s a brutal schedule.” The Heat are coming to the end of a four-game road trip and knocked off Minnesota and Detroit by a combined 36 points on Saturday and Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBATV, Sun Sports (Miami), FSN Indiana

                              NBA POWER RANKINGS: Heat (-14.5) - Pacers (-13.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Pacers -1.5

ABOUT THE HEAT (16-5, 11-10 ATS): Miami looked lifeless is back-to-back losses last week but got Dwyane Wade back from the flu on Saturday and watched as James flirted with triple-doubles against both the Timberwolves and the Pistons. James is more focused on fixing the small issues with his own team than getting too worked up about the matchup with the Pacers. “Obviously, everybody is going to make it as a marquee game on Tuesday but I don’t really get too much involved in regular-season matchups, especially early in December,” James said. “They’re a great team right now, the way they’re playing basketball. We’re trying to get healthy, trying to get to our full potential.”

ABOUT THE PACERS (18-3, 15-6 ATS): Indiana built up its top record in the Eastern Conference largely on the strength of its team defense and the brilliance of Paul George. While George continues to excel at the offensive end, the team defense surrendered at least 100 points in four of the five games on the trip after allowing an opponent to reach the century mark just once in the first 16 games. The Pacers allowed the Thunder to shoot a season-high 61 percent in Sunday’s setback and George (32 points) was the only player to score more than 12 for Indiana.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                              * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Indiana.
                              * Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.
                              * Heat are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Indiana.

                              BUZZER BEATERS:

                              1. The Pacers took two of the three regular-season meeting in 2012-13 - both at home.

                              2. Miami F Michael Beasley (hamstring) sat out Sunday and is questionable for Tuesday.

                              3. George averaged 29.8 points on the five-game road trip and went 27-for-28 from the free-throw line.
