Top 10 - Stock Watch

Now that football is winding down and your nights are spent watching college basketball it will be important to know which top teams will have a betting advantage.

Every week I will break down the current AP Top 10 and point out which teams you should Buy or Sell in my StockWatch report. This will give you an idea from a betting standpoint what teams to bet on, against or just watch.

Remember, we are looking at whether a team can cover the spread in their upcoming games. Not necessarily win.

1) Arizona (11-0 SU, 8-3 ATS) - HOLD

No reason to bet against the Wildcats at this point. They have earned their top spot, by taking care of Duke, Michigan and San Diego State. Freshman sensation Aaron Gordon is finding his rhythm in the Sean Miller offense. With Southern and Northern Arizona next on their schedule the line will be large and the risk of a back door cover could be likely. Hold off on Zona.

2) Syracuse (10-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) - HOLD

I’m a little pessimistic on the Orangemen. Their schedule thus far has not been difficult. They played their first road game last week and snuck out a win over St. Johns. Even with an easy schedule they have not been impressive, covering the spread just over 50% of the time . Let’s hold on Boeheim for now and make him prove it.

3) Ohio State (10-0 SU, 5-4 ATS) - BUY

With four returning starters and an Elite 8 appearance last year, this team is anything but “wet behind the ears.” LaQuinton Ross is finding his rhythm, averaging 18 points in his last 5 games. They get their first real test this Saturday, when they travel to South Bend, but this veteran team has played in much tougher venues. I’m buying the Buckeyes this week.

4) Wisconsin (12-0 SU, 8-4 ATS) - HOLD

Every year Bo Ryan gets the most out of his players. This year is no exception. Keep an eye on this team. They’re not playing this week, so you’ll have no choice but to hold, but be looking to save your bankroll to bet this team in January.

5) Michigan State (8-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) - BUY

Best thing to happen to a bettor is having a Tom Izzo team nearly getting upset by a team like Oakland. They have a big matchup this Saturday against Texas. You will still have to lay the points but the oddsmakers won’t be nearly as greedy due to their previous performance. I like to buy a Spartan team that’s been awakened.

6) Louisville: (9-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) - SELL

I’m not impressed with Rick Pitino opponents thus far. They have yet to play a true road game and they are only 4-4 ATS. North Carolina has been their only true test and they were man handled shooting 38% vs. the Tar Heels 54% from the field. Cardinals need to prove something first, before I go to the ticket window with this team in mind. Right now they rank high because of last year’s performance. Too much inflation for me…SELL.

7) Oklahoma State (9-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) - BUY

It took a while, but teams finally started to figure out they can’t leave Marcus Smart open. But…with four returning starters and having played some challenging teams already, they have shown some toughness. They will have their work cut out for them, Saturday vs. Colorado, but I still like the Cowboys to pull away late.

8) Duke (8-2 SU, 5-4 ATS) - BUY

Coach K has already lost to one PAC-12 opponent, this year. He won’t lose another. Buy, Buy, Buy… Thursday vs. UCLA.

9) Villanova (10-0 SU, 7-1 ATS) - BUY

The Wildcats are 7-1 ATS…enough said. I bet against 'Nova last week and paid for it dearly. They will get a real chance to move up the polls when they play Syracuse next Saturday (12/28). I like this team. They play with passion and are very quick up and down the court. Unfortunately, they won’t go under the radar, making their stock a little less valued, but still worth the bet. For the next couple of weeks I’m buying the Wildcats until they can prove me wrong.

10) Connecticut (9-0 SU, 3-5 ATS) - SELL

Anytime a coach can bring back all 5 starters you have a real chance to make statement in your conference and the Huskies will have their chance, just not this week. UCONN plays Stanford and UW. I believe they can beat the Cardinal, but then hop on a plane and play UW in a very tough venue. I would sell UCONN later in the week. Too much travel in too short of time.

Odds to win the college basketball national title in April.......

5-1-- Kentucky-- They better get a hell of a lot better by the spring.

6-1-- Duke-- Vermont was 31-41 inside arc against them. 31-41.

6-1-- Michigan State-- Need to get healthy; are messed up right now.

7-1-- Kansas-- Based on reputation more than on actual results.

10-1-- Louisville-- Lost to UNC, only team they've played in top 80.

10-1-- Arizona-- Beat Duke on neutral floor, not sure they're this high.

12-1-- Oklahoma State-- Best bet on the board right now.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: What happened to free speech?......

13) A&E suspended Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson for stuff he said in a magazine interview; I don't agree with what he said, but dammit, he's an American and he has a right to state his beliefs, even if they are offensive to some people. Soldiers risk their lives to protect our free speech.

Our society has become so babified that every time some group is offended, sdomeone has to get fired. Grow some thick skin and realize that our society is diverse and we're going to disagree on things, sometimes wildly so.

If you don't like Robertson, don't watch his TV show, don't buy the stuff his family's business sells, but we all have a right to say what we think and the day we lose the right is a scary one to think about.

12) Speaking of free speech, Southern Illinois hoop coach Barry Hinson went on an epic rant on his own team after the Salukis lost to Murray State Monday night- its been all over ESPN. Hinson is a good coach who came close to getting Missouri State to the tournament a couple times, but hasn't been to get any traction with the Salukis.

His frustration boiled over, he and his players obviously dislike each other and if he keeps his job, sounds like Hinson will be recruiting a lot of new players, but its possible that his bosses might replace him first.

11) Texas 86, North Carolina 83-- It was widely thought that Rick Barnes was on a hot seat at Texas, but now he is 10-1 with wins at Temple, North Carolina, and he has one of ten least experienced teams in country.

10) Knicks 107, Bucks 101, 2ot-- NY shooting %ages: Anthony 9-29, Bargnani 5-15, Smith 7-23 (5-17 from arc). Must be fun team to coach.

9) Bobcats 104, Raptors 102, ot-- Charlotte is 12-14 under former Siena assistant Steve Clifford; right now, they're a playoff team.

8) Michael Jordan is trying to sell his Chicago mansion; not saying its big, but it has 15 bathrooms in it. 15 bathrooms. I'm not sure the high school I went to had 15 bathrooms, and it had 2,000 students in it.

7) Texas Southern 90, Temple 89-- Aaric Murray washed out at LaSalle and West Virginia, mostly for off-court reasons; he had 48 points in this game, playing for former Indiana/UAB coach Mike Davis.

6) Stanford 53, UConn 51-- Huskies are 4-1 vs top 100 teams, with five games decided by total of seven points. Stanford lost a home game to BYU when they scored 103 points; holding UConn to 51 was interesting.

5) In some states, the people who sell winning lottery tickets get a large reward; it was close to cruel when some nitwit TV reporter told a woman in Georgia she was getting $1M for selling the winning MegaMillions ticket, when in fact, that rule doesn't exist in Georgia.

Ticket seller in San Jose got $1M, ticket seller in Georgia? Bupkus.

4) I heard on TV last night that worldwide, this was the warmest November on record, which goes back to 1880. December? Not so much.

3) Heat 97, Pacers 94-- Indiana led by 15 in third quarter but couldn't hold on, in a game that got ridiculous hype considering it was December 18. This could be a great Eastern Conference final, but thats five months from now.

2) I'm tired of hearing TV people assuming that someone is someone is smart just because they went to an Ivy League school. Incredible BS. For Pete's sake, Chris Berman went to Brown-- you think he is especially brilliant?

1) New Jersey Giants do not need a new head coach, they need a sturdy offensive line to protect their immobile QB, and some running backs who can take pressure off a beleaguered passing game. They need better players; the coach has won two Super Bowls- he's pretty damn good.

UCLA lost 80-71 at Missouri in only true road game; they drilled both Nevada/Northwestern on neutral floor in Vegas. Bruins are making 41% of 3's, 59.2% of 2's vs schedule #309, very weak. Duke is 2-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to Kansas/Arizona on neutral floors- they make 42% from arc- they defend arc well, not so well inside (51.8% of 2's). ACC faves are 13-5 vs spread on neutral floors.

Clemson lost by 6 at Arkansas in only true road game; Tigers are 5-0 vs teams outside top 200, with all five wins by 16+ points. Clemson holds teams to 25% from arc, 38.7% from arc- they've played schedule #329. Auburn haven't played in 11 days; they're 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 29 at Iowa State, 19 to Illinois on neutral floor. Eagles are shooting 26% from arc, 10th-worst in country.

9-1 Utah has played 5th-easiest schedule so far, making 62% inside arc, but they hammered rival BYU by 17 last game; Utes are 6-0 vs teams not in top 200, with five wins by 14+ points. Texas State is 2-7 vs D-I teams, turning ball over 21% of time; they're 0-3 vs top 100 teams with losses by 7-32-21 points. Sun Belt road underdogs are 11-24 vs spread.

USC lost by 13 at Utah State in season opener that is still their only true road game; Trojans lost two of three in tourney at Atlantis, but are 4-0 vs teams ranked outside top 200. Enfield was shooting coach but USC is making just 29% from arc, 65.1% from line. Long Beach overscheduled again, is 1-9 vs #2 schedule- they lost by 1-3 points in only two games vs teams outside top 100. Their only win was against a non-D-I team.

Troy State is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 15-12-29 points; they've made 23.8% from arc, 2nd-worst in US. 5-3 UCSB won its two games vs non-top 100 teams by 19-11 points; Gauchos are making 44% from arc (#5 in US), 57.3% inside arc (#5). This is one of those events where teams play three days in row vs preordained foes, not the best format.

Utah State is 3-0 vs teams ranked outside top 200, winning by 33-19-11 points; Aggies don't force lost of turnovers, but hold teams to 27.0% on arc, while making 40.1% of 3's. Western Illinois loat by 15-14 in its two games vs top 100 teams; they're 4-5, but three of four wins are vs teams who aren't in D-I- they're making 27.8% from arc, turn ball over 21.2%.

Iona is 0-3 vs teams in top 125, losing by 4-20-13 points; Gaels play at #11 tempo in country but don't force lot of turnovers, which means they give up lot of points (79.7 ppg in last six games). Dayton is 3-1 vs top 100 teams, with only loss by point to Baylor on neutral floor; Flyers are making 38.2% from arc, forcing turnovers 21.4% of time. MAAC road underdogs are 14-10 vs spread.

South Dakota outscored Morehead State 43-8 on foul line LY in 85-75 home win LY; fouls were 32-8 in game!!!! Coyotes ost last four games, last three by total of seven points- they're 1-4 on road, with three losses by 8 or less points, and 57-56 win at #256 Texas State. Morehead State lost three of last four games, is turning ball over 24.2% of time, making only 29.2% from arc, 64.2% from foul line.

Inexperienced (#340) Illinois State won three of last four games vs D-I teams, with impressive win over Dayton. Redbirds won by 19 in only game vs team ranked outside top 200. Tennessee State is last in whole country behind arc (23.8%); their only win is vs non-D-I team- three of their last four losses were by 9 or less points. OVC road dogs are 19-31.

UT-Martin won last three games, all vs teams outside top 300, after 0-8 start vs D-I teams, but at least they've won three games; Skyhawks are terrible on defense- foes shoot 58.4% inside arc against them. OVC road underdogs are 19-31 vs spread. UTM is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 26-28-30 points. Arkansas is #7 in country, forcing turnovers 24.5%.

Duke vs. UCLA: What bettors need to know

Duke Blue Devils vs. UCLA Bruins (+3.5, OFF)

The game will be played at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York.

Jabari Parker and No. 8 Duke bring one of the most efficient offenses in the country to Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday to face off against Jordan Adams and an even more potent UCLA attack. The Blue Devils are shooting 51.7 percent from the field, good enough for the top 10 in the nation but not quite enough to catch the Bruins, who fill it up at 54.3 percent and average 89.1 points. No. 22 UCLA is facing its first ranked opponent in Duke.

Parker is doing nothing to slow the hype train behind him with averages of 22 points and 7.6 rebounds in his freshman campaign and is sliding perfectly into a Blue Devils' offense that swings the ball and isn’t afraid to run. “The most important thing we want to do is keep developing,” Parker said. “We don’t want to peak too early. That’s a positive way we can look at it.” UCLA is developing as well and bounced back from its first loss by crushing Prairie View A&M 95-71 on Saturday.

ABOUT DUKE (8-2, 5-5 ATS): The Blue Devils zipped past Gardner Webb 85-66 on Monday and are coming together behind Parker, Quinn Cook and Rodney Hood. Cook is quietly taking control of the team from the point guard spot and is averaging a team-high 6.6 assists while shooting better than 50 percent from the field. “This year he is the veteran,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said of Cook. “It’s kind of like a torch has been passed. Maturity, leadership, it’s his team.” Cook posted nine assists in each of the last two contests.

ABOUT UCLA (9-1, 6-3 ATS): The Bruins have not played quite the same schedule the Blue Devils have and fell to the lone team to even sniff the Top 25 - Missouri - in their only true road game. Adams led UCLA in scoring in each of its first 10 games but guard Kyle Anderson is becoming the glue for the offense while posting 13.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists and shooting 60 percent from beyond the arc. “It’s a game you think about as a kid,” Anderson said of the meeting with Duke. “It’s going to be a test for our team. It’s at a neutral site, so we really have to play like we practice. It’s going to be great.”
