Preview: Panthers (9-2) at Badgers (10-0)

    Date: December 11, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Get to the spot in the lane ahead of the dribbler. Set the feet. Absorb the blow.

Josh Gasser is Wisconsin's take-a-charge player in the backcourt. The tough junior gets just as much pleasure from drawing charging fouls or shutting down an opponent's best scorer that he would nailing a game-winning bucket.

The fourth-ranked Badgers (10-0) are off to their best start in two decades thanks in part to Gasser, who's back after missing a year with a left knee injury.

"He makes plays for his size and makes plays in areas that a lot of people don't," coach Bo Ryan said about the 6-foot-3 Gasser.

Wisconsin can match its best start since 1993-94 by beating intrastate rival Milwaukee (9-2) for the 21st straight time Wednesday night. The only other time the team was ranked in the top five was during a 12-week run in the 2006-07 season, including one week at No. 1.

Defense remains a focus, but the Badgers have offensive versatility this season, too. Frank Kaminsky (14.6 points) is the big man who can shoot the 3, while forward Sam Dekker (14.4 points) can frustrate foes with his inside-out game. Sharpshooter Ben Brust (11.4 points) leads the team from long range, while point man Traevon Jackson (11.2 points) can hit clutch shots.

Gasser (10.4 points) completes the three-guard rotation, but scoring might be his least-important responsibility.

He typically draws the toughest defensive assignment, like when he stymied Virginia's Joe Harris into two points on 1-of-10 shooting in a 48-38 win last week.

"It's a good role to have, to be honest, as a guy who has to defend one of the other team's better scorers," Gasser said this week. "I kind of want to make life a little more difficult for them."

In Saturday's 70-64 win over Marquette, Gasser expertly drew another charge. He tracked down a loose ball to save a possession, dribbled into the lane to draw defenders before side-arming a pass to an open Dekker in the corner for a 3.

Every good team usually has someone like Gasser, a "glue guy" who relishes doing the little things and doesn't mind letting other guys get the headlines.

But Gasser does his job so well, it's hard not to notice, either.

"We couldn't ask for anything else from him," Ryan said. "He's just a tough, young man who on takes every assignment and gives it his best."

Wisconsin advanced to the Big Ten tournament championship last year before losing to Ohio State, then dropped its NCAA tournament opener as a No. 5 seed to 12th-seeded Mississippi.

Imagine what the Badgers could have done with Gasser, who could only watch after suffering a torn ACL during training camp.

It's been a long, tough comeback since then. Gasser seemingly gets questioned about how he's feeling almost every time he speaks with reporters. He's getting used to playing with a brace on his knee.

"Each week as we go, as we get deeper into the season here, I'm definitely thinking about it a lot less," Gasser said. "It is part of me now. It feels very natural with it on."

A decorated Wisconsin prep player, Gasser averaged 23.9 points as a senior and holds career records for scoring, rebounding and free-throw percentage at his high school in Port Washington. But Gasser said he quickly knew what his limitations might be at the collegiate level, where teams are full of players who hold high school records.

"It's such a different game," Gasser said. "I came in with the mindset to try to do anything I can do to help us win."

Asked about his team's ascension to No. 4 in the AP poll, Ryan said the Badgers' attention was focused on preparing for Milwaukee.

"You have to deal with that, but everybody's going to come at us the same way. Everybody's going to want to, even more so, try to get a piece of the Badgers," said Ryan, who coached the Panthers from 1999-2001.

Milwaukee, though, has had almost no success in this series, with its lone win in 30 all-time meetings coming Dec. 12, 1992 at Wisconsin.

The Panthers do bring a five-game winning streak into the matchup, having defeated Bradley 73-67 on Saturday. Austin Arians and Kyle Kelm each scored 17 points for Milwaukee, which last opened 9-2 in 2002-03.

Preview: Aggies (7-4) at Wildcats (9-0)

      Date: December 11, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

For the first time in over a decade, Arizona is the No. 1-ranked team in the country.

Before a big test to that spot at the top this weekend, the Wildcats play Wednesday night at home against a New Mexico State team that hasn't beaten a ranked opponent since 2007.

"I think it's something we feel like we've earned," coach Sean Miller said. "We know that being ranked No. 1 doesn't mean that we won the championship or the season's now over, but I'm not going to play the negative card at all. ... To be ranked No. 1 is maybe the greatest compliment you can have."

While the program's first No. 1 ranking since March 2003 wouldn't seem to be in jeopardy at home against the Aggies, losers of three straight, Arizona could get a tough challenge Saturday. Miller's team will visit a previously ranked Michigan team which has won 37 of 39 at home, including 20 straight against non-conference foes.

The Wildcats (9-0) have gained their recent national respect with dominant defense and rebounding. Their 14.1 rebounding margin is among the best in the country while they've held opponents to 59.1 points per game and 36.8 percent shooting.

Arizona overcame its own shooting woes in Saturday's 63-58 win over UNLV. The Wildcats went 3 of 16 from 3-point range and shot 41.8 percent overall but held the Runnin' Rebels to 7 of 25 in the second half to do away with a three-point halftime deficit.

Point guard T.J. McConnell led Arizona with season highs of 13 points and seven rebounds to go with six assists. He hasn't turned the ball over more than three times in 13 straight games dating back to February.

"He's in many ways the heart and soul of what we do," Miller said, "and I think you saw that in many ways in the second half."

Leading scorer Nick Johnson, averaging 16.6 points, was held to 12 and had his worst shooting night of the season (4 of 15). However, he's reached double figures in every game.

The Wildcats outrebounded UNLV 41-29, including 18-5 on the offensive boards. They've outrebounded every opponent by at least eight, thanks largely to their front-court size with Kaleb Tarczewski (7-foot), Aaron Gordon (6-9) and Brandon Ashley (6-8).

That length has helped account for a plus-15.0 scoring margin in the paint. Figure in opponents' 27.8 percent 3-point shooting, and it's tough to find places to attack the Wildcats even when they aren't at their best.

"Our identity showed up in full circle on Saturday," Miller said. "I've had a few people say, 'God, what an ugly game. It was a hard game to watch.' In one sense it might have been because we missed some shots and had a hard time scoring. But for me, it was beautiful in another sense because the reason we won is we really stayed true to the best parts of this year's team."

New Mexico State (7-4) could struggle to overcome those strengths. The Aggies have been outrebounded by 23 during their three-game skid.

They're coming off Saturday's 80-68 defeat at then-No. 19 Gonzaga. They focused on the Bulldogs' outside shooting, holding them to a season-low four 3-pointers, but were outrebounded 45-30 despite the size of starting centers Sim Bhullar (7-5) and Tshilidzi Nephawe (6-10).

"I'm proud of the way my guys played," coach Marvin Menzies said. "We had a game plan that gave us a chance to win the game."

Daniel Mullings scored 17 points and leads the Aggies with 17.6 per game.

The Aggies have lost their last 13 games against ranked opponents and last beat a top-10 opponent in 1980.

The teams have met four times since 1999 with the Wildcats winning each contest.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones (-3)

Basketball in the state of Iowa is as energized as it has been in years, and that excitement will be taken to the ultimate level Friday when Iowa visits Iowa State in a matchup of teams with a combined record of 17-1. The 16th-ranked Cyclones and No. 22 Hawkeyes are meeting as ranked teams for the first time since 1987. "You want to play in games that mean a lot to a lot of people, and this game means a lot to a lot of people," said Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. "It's an important game. It's why you work so hard."

Iowa State is coached by Fred Hoiberg, who played in four games for the Cyclones against the Hawkeyes during the early 1990's after first gaining exposure to the rivalry as a ballboy at Iowa State. “It’s fun to be a part of this as a coach, as well,” Hoiberg said. “It’s going to be a fun atmosphere. You’ve got two teams that are ranked ... and both teams feel pretty good about themselves right now. It should be a lot of fun.” This year's showdown features two of the nation's best offensive teams, as Iowa State enters Thursday's action leading the country with 91.7 points per game and Iowa isn't far behind, placing sixth with a mark of 89.5 points.

                            TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT IOWA (10-1, 6-4 ATS): It seems like the math could not work, but the Hawkeyes have 10 different players averaging at least 15 minutes per game, led by senior guard Roy Devyn Marble (15.6 points in 26.5 minutes) and junior forward Aaron White (12.6 points in 24.1 minutes). Neither Marble nor White is particularly efficient from 3-point range, but Iowa has several other long-range weapons in Zach McCabe (16-of-33), Mike Gesell (11-of-27) and Jarrod Uthoff (7-of-13). The Hawkeyes had lost three straight meetings to their cross-state rivals before defeating the Cyclones 80-71 at home last season behind White's 18 points.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (7-0, 4-1 ATS): Not only are the Cyclones the highest scoring team in the country, but they also rank second in assists (19.9) and fourth in rebounding (46.3). Five Iowa State players average in double figures, paced by two seniors - forward Melvin Ejim (18 per game) and guard DeAndre Kane (15.4). With an average of 7.8 rebounds, Ejim is actually third on the Cyclones, as Kane averages eight boards and Dustin Hogue chips in 12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds despite only standing 6-foot-6, 215 pounds.
