  • Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) New Year's Day used to be one of the best days of the year, culmination of the college football season, but the BCS system put an end to that. Not sure why they have four early games on at once with the Rose Bowl/Fiesta Bowl on TV unopposed, but thats the way things are.

Curious to see how things change next year with the new playoff system.

    12) NHL struck gold with its outdoor games; 105,491 fans sat in the snow all day and watched Toronto beat Detroit in a shootout. It was estimated that almost half the fans came across the border to root for the Leafs. Road team is now 6-2 in NHL's outdoor games.

    11) Mike Emrick is the best play-by-play announcer in any sport; its a treat to listen to his enthusiasm calling a game.

    10) Buccaneers finally got it right and hired Lovie Smith; Tampa Bay is at Chicago next year- expect to see it as an early season primetime game.

    9) Liked seeing injured LSU QB Zach Mettenberger wearing a headset, taking notes during the Tigers' bowl game; too often, injured players seem like an outcast on the sidelines. Mettenberger was like an assistant coach; it had to help young QB Anthony Jennings in his first college start.

    8) You wonder if coaches at Georgia/LSU weren't totally unhappy about playing young QBs in their bowl games; it gives them a head start on next season. Its sad for a senior QB to miss out playing in his last bowl, but next fall, the experience those two QBs got Wednesday will be a big help.

    7) South Carolina RB Bruce Ellington made a couple excellent catches in the Gamecocks' win over Wisconsin; easy to visualize him as a player similar to Dexter McClusker of the Chiefs, a dependable 3rd down back.

    6) ESPN GameDay needs to do a profile on Mrs Jim Mora; her husband was a terrific NFL coach who became famous thru post-game sound bites; Jim Jr is a terrific coach at UCLA who seems a lot more pleasant than his dad. Would be a good feature to hear from their wife/mother.

    5) Harvard beat Boston College 73-58, sixth year in row Crimson beat BC. Hard to be a viable ACC program if you can't beat an Ivy League team. In its attempt to get better in football, ACC has hurt itself as a basketball league.

    4) Since 2004, teams that won a bowl game, then returned to the same bowl the next year are 11-15 against the spread, 1-3 this year.

    3) There are 256 games in the NFL's regular season; this year, in 28.5% of those games (73), one side got 70%+ of betting action. Those teams were an surprisingly bad 31-42 (42.5%) against the spread.

    2) LSU won the Outback Bowl, so Outback restaurants are giving away free blooming onions today if you go in and say "Outback Bowl". It isn't often you can get something for nothing; today is one of those days.

    1) No doubt in my mind, most interesting part of the NFL Draft will be which team drafts Johnny Manziel. To me, he is a lot like Fran Tarkenton; others have compared his daring antics to Brett Favre. No matter what, he is must-watch TV; his career will be interesting to follow.

      • Shaw definitely made some bad calls and Mich St capitalized. I was shocked they lost but that's gambling. Thankfully I cashed in late night on the Clippers team over 102.

        Good luck tonight!

        • 'Boys, Tigers clash in Cotton

          January 2, 2014

Cotton Bowl (ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET)
Matchup: Oklahoma State (10-2 SU, 8-4 ATS) vs. Missouri (11-2 SU, 10-2-1 ATS)
          Venue: AT&T Stadium
          Location: Arlington, TX
          Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Oklahoma State -1.5, 61

Former Big 12 rivals square off in Friday's Cotton Bowl as No. 13 Oklahoma State faces No. 9 Missouri in Arlington, TX.

The Cowboys went into their final regular season game with a chance to win the Big 12 and earn a BCS berth. However, a loss to rival Oklahoma gave the conference title to Baylor, and put OSU into the Cotton Bowl. Despite that loss, the Cowboys (8-4 ATS) still had an impressive season, and they have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.

Last season, Missouri struggled to a 2-6 conference record in its first season in the mighty SEC, but head coach Gary Pinkel has turned the club around, going 11-2 (both SU and ATS), and won the SEC East before falling 59-42 in the title game to Auburn. But Pinkel has led the Tigers to a 15-3 ATS mark (80%) after a loss by 17+ points in his tenure with the school.

However, Mike Gundy has posted a 50-22 ATS mark (69%) when favored as the head coach of Oklahoma State.

These former conference rivals have split their past 10 meetings (SU and ATS) since 1995, but the Cowboys won each of the past three matchups (SU and ATS), including a 45-24 blowout win at Missouri when they last met in 2011. Both teams have great offenses, combining for 78.8 PPG and 933 total YPG, making the key to winning the Cotton Bowl being which team can make the stops on defense.

The Cowboys throughout the years have been known as an offensive juggernaut, and this season was not any different. Oklahoma State ranks 13th in the nation in scoring (39.8 PPG) behind a balanced offensive attack that gains 269 passing YPG on 7.5 YPA and 172 rushing YPG on 4.4 YPC. Senior QB Clint Chelf (1,792 pass yards, 7.7 YPA, 15 TD, 6 INT) regained his starting job after struggling early in the season, and has the ability to make plays with both his arm, as well as his legs, rushing for 321 yards (6.1 YPC) and six touchdowns.

He has a terrific duo on the outside, as WRs Tracy Moore (44 catches, 638 yards, 6 TD) and Josh Stewart (52 catches, 623 yards, 2 TD) complement each other very well. Moore is a big, strong receiver that is able to make the tough catches over the middle of the field, while Stewart is a dynamic player that has the ability to make people miss in the open field and take the ball the distance.

The ground game is propelled by RBs Desmond Roland (745 rush yards, 4.7 YPC, 12 TD) and Jeremy Smith (442 rush yards, 3.8 YPC, 9 TD), who combined for 186 rushing yards in the last game versus Oklahoma. However, what has made Oklahoma State better this season is the vast improvement of the defense (20.0 PPG, 12th in nation), a unit that has been the weakness for the Cowboys in the past few seasons.

This year, OSU has allowed 378 total YPG, broken down into 246 passing YPG (5.9 YPA) and 133 rushing YPG (3.5 YPC). The star on defense is senior CB Justin Gilbert (40 tackles) who has six interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. While he is a terrific defensive player, he is equally as dynamic in the return game. But he'll have his hands full with the tall and athletic Missouri wideouts.

Gilbert figures to see a lot of time against guys like long-named Missouri WRs Dorial Green-Beckham (55 catches, 830 yards, 12 TD) and L'Damian Washington (47 catches, 853 yards, 10 TD) who stand 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-4, respectively. The man that feeds the large receivers is senior QB James Franklin (2,255 pass yards, 8.1 YPA, 19 TD, 5 INT) who has made terrific strides throughout his career at Missouri, leading his team to 39.0 PPG (16th in nation) on 257 passing YPG (39th in FBS) and 237 rushing YPG (16th in nation). He used to be known as a scrambler, but while he still has the ability to run and make plays (474 rush yards, 4.5 YPC, 4 TD) defenses have to worry about him throwing the ball downfield. But he will be looking for redemption from that 2011 loss to Oklahoma State when he finished 14-of-27 for 184 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT.

With Green-Beckham and Washington grabbing a lot of the focus of opposing defenses, senior RB Henry Josey (1074 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns with an average of 6.6 yards per carry) has had a terrific year. Josey has had a tough career having to battle with multiple ACL injuries, but he didn't show any signs of injury when he last faced the Cowboys in 2011, rushing for 138 yards on 25 carries (5.5 YPC).

On defense, Missouri allows just 22.5 PPG (29th in FBS), but allows 407 total YPG 255 passing YPG (6.5 YPA) and 152 rushing YPG (4.2 YPC). In the SEC title loss to Auburn, the Tigers surrendered 545 rushing yards on 74 carries (7.4 YPC), plus 132 more yards through the air. But they have forced at least one turnover in all 13 games this year, totaling 29 takeaways.

          • Clemson looks for respect

            January 2, 2014

Orange Bowl (ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET)
Matchup: Clemson (10-2 SU, 6-6 ATS) vs. Ohio State (12-1 SU, 6-6-1 ATS)
            Venue: Sun Life Stadium
            Location: Miami, Fl.
            Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Ohio State -3, 69.5

Falling one game short of a national championship berth, No. 7 Ohio State will have to regroup and prepare to take on No. 12 Clemson in the Orange Bowl, featuring two of the nation’s most prolific offenses.

The Buckeyes averaged 46.3 PPG this year (3rd in FBS), scoring at least 30 points in every single game this season. Their lone loss of the year came in the Big Ten Championship to Michigan State, when they fell 34-24. Between that and a narrow victory against Michigan, they gave up 37.5 PPG over their past two contests.

The Tigers scored 40.2 PPG (9th in nation), running one of the most effective pass offenses in the country (329 YPG 11th in FBS). They also lost their most recent game, falling 31-17 at in-state rival South Carolina, while their other defeat came to No. 1 Florida State (51-14 on Oct. 19). Overall, the Tigers went 7-5 ATS this season, including 3-1 ATS in their final four games.

As an underdog, they were 1-2 ATS. Ohio State finished 7-6 ATS, going 0-4 ATS in their final four contests. Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer is 38-11 ATS (78%) in all non-conference games he has ever coached, while Dabo Swinney is 12-3 ATS against good rushing defenses (allowing 120 rushing YPG or less) as the head coach of Clemson.

The only time these programs met was the 1978 Gator Bowl, when Clemson won 17-15.

The Clemson passing offense continues to flourish with 8.7 YPA on 68.4% completions. That’s all credit to another solid season for senior QB Tajh Boyd (3,473 pass yards, 9.3 YPA, 29 TD, 9 INT), who completed 67.6% of his passes. Two of those picks came in the loss to South Carolina, but in the three games prior to that, he exploded for 1,005 passing yards, 12 TD and just 2 INT. He also added 273 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, despite averaging only 2.0 YPC.

His top target is future NFL first-round pick, junior WR Sammy Watkins (85 catches, 1,237 yards, 10 TD), who can create a big play at any moment with his vertical speed. Watkins has at least 90 receiving yards in nine of 12 games this year. Junior WR Martavis Bryant (39 catches, 800 yards, 5 TD) also made big plays, averaging a hefty 20.5 yards per reception.

On the ground, RB Roderick McDowell (956 rush yards, 5.4 YPC, 5 TD) should break the 1,000-yard mark this game after a solid season taking advantage of defenses that key in too much on Boyd. McDowell ran for 111 yards on just 14 carries (7.9 YPC) in the loss to South Carolina.

Defensively, the Tigers were decent against the run, allowing 153 YPG on just 3.7 YPC, and opponents completed only 52.4% of their passes (45.9% in away games) for 198 passing YPG against a unit that yielded 21.1 PPG (17th in nation). But Clemson will be hard-pressed to keep the Buckeyes below 30 points.

Ohio State’s offense is built more on the ground, where it averaged 317.5 rushing YPG, third-most FBS. The Buckeyes scored 42 rushing touchdowns, with both RB Carlos Hyde (1,408 rush yards, 7.7 YPC, 14 TD) and QB Braxton Miller (1,033 rush yards, 6.8 YPC, 10 TD) both eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark. Hyde accomplished that feat that after missing the first three games of the year, rushing for more than 110 yards in each of his final eight games, breaking 200 yards in a game twice in the past four contests.

Miller, who missed two games due to injury this year, ran for more than 140 yards in each of his past four games, averaging 156 rushing YPG on 9.4 YPC with 8 TD. But the junior is also an efficient passer, completing 63.2% of his throws for 1,860 yards (8.1 YPA), 22 TD and 5 INT. He also missed some time this year due to injury. WRs Philly Brown (55 receptions, 10 TD) and Devin Smith (42 receptions, 8 TD) were his top targets, tying for the team lead with 655 receiving yards each.

While the Ohio State defense was stingy against the run, yielding a mere 103 YPG on 3.1 YPC, the pass defense often struggled, allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 60.5% of their attempts for 260 YPG (6.8 YPA). The Buckeyes hope to capitalize on a turnover-prone Clemson team with 20 giveaways in its past eight games, including six in its most recent game, but they have forced only two turnovers in past three contests combined.

            • Bowl Breakdown - Part V

              January 1, 2014

It's the most wonderful time of the year for college football betting fans, as there are 35 bowl games on tap to break down and find winners in. Today, we're taking a look at some of the best bowl games of the year, continuing with the final six bowl games of the season.

Sugar Bowl - Oklahoma Sooners vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
              Thursday, January 2nd, 8:30 p.m. ET
              Opening Line: Alabama -15

The Crimson Tide have only been beaten in one bowl game in the Nick Saban era, and it happened to come right here on this field against Utah at the Sugar Bowl. That regular season ended with a brutally disappointing loss to Florida in the SEC Championship Game. This one ended in an even more crushing loss to Auburn. Oklahoma beat Okie State in Bedlam to end the regular season, and that's what got it in the BCS, but we have a feeling that this is the worst team to be in the BCS this year, perhaps including UCF. The Sooners have a history of choking big time in games like these.

Cotton Bowl - Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Missouri Tigers
              Friday, January 3rd, 7:30 p.m. ET
              Opening Line: Missouri -1

We have no doubt that these are two of the best 10 teams in the country this year, as both of these clubs missed out on chances to play in the BCS on the final day of the regular season. The Cowboys, who have dominated in their last three bowl games, lost to Oklahoma in Bedlam and then perhaps got screwed out of an at large bid to the show anyway, while Missouri lost in the wild SEC Championship Game against Auburn, who will go on to play for all of the marbles. These clubs are quite familiar with each other having played against one another in the Big XII for years before Missouri's move, so there could be some bad blood spilling over in Arlington.

Orange Bowl - Clemson Tigers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
              Friday, January 3rd, 8:30 p.m. ET
Opening Line: Ohio State -2 ½

OSU had to think that it was set to be playing against another team from the ACC this year, but it lost the Big Ten title game and has been relegated to the Orange Bowl. Urban Meyer is a perfect 5-0 SU and ATS in BCS bowl games, while Clemson's only trip to the BCS ended with a brutal loss to West Virginia here in the Orange Bowl. QB Tajh Boyd will want to make amends in his last collegiate game for sure.

BBVA Compass Bowl - Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Houston Cougars
              Saturday, January 4th, 1:00 p.m. ET
              Opening Line: Vanderbilt -2 ½

Head Coach James Franklin is likely to move on from Vandy at some point around this game, so we aren't sure whether he will or will not be here for the festivities in Birmingham. QB Austyn Carta-Samuels won't be, as he has an injured knee and will turn the ball over to QB Patton Robinette, who will be making his first career start. The Dores have never won back to back bowl games in the program's history, but they have a chance to do so this year. Houston though, made great strides in the first year of playing in the AAC, and though it wasn't as successful as UCF, the year has to be looked upon with high regard for sure.

GoDaddy Bowl - Arkansas State Red Wolves vs. Ball State Cardinals
              Sunday, January 5th, 9:00 p.m. ET
Opening Line: Ball State -7 ½

It's becoming an annual tradition for the Red Wolves: Play in the GoDaddy Bowl and replace your head coach all at the same time! This is the third straight season this situation has occurred, and it comes with the worst edition of the ASU team we have seen of these three. It also comes against perhaps the best foe of the three as well, as this Ball State team is no joke. The Cards are looking for their first ever bowl win after going 0-6 SU and ATS prior to that, and that could make this the biggest game in their history.

BCS National Championship Game - Florida State Seminoles vs. Auburn Tigers
              Monday, January 6th, 8:30 p.m. ET
Opening Line: Florida State -8 ½

And it all boils down to this. The Noles have perhaps their biggest challenge defensively against an Auburn team which just rolled up over 800 yards combined in consecutive games against Missouri and Alabama, no small feat for sure. The Noles though, have averaged 53 points per game and do just about everything well. Here's the question, though: Have the Seminoles just played no one good and have rolled everyone up, or are they that good? If they're that good, the seven year chokehold the SEC has had on the BCS National Championship is about to go by the wayside.

              • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Oklahoma 45, Alabama 31-- Rough end to season for Crimson Tide, who gained 516 yards but turned ball over five times (-4).

-- Oregon 70, Utah 68 OT-- Ducks stay unbeaten with tough road win.

-- Washington 76, Arizona State 65-- Discouraging loss for Sun Devils; an NCAA team doesn't get beaten this badly at home.

-- Northern Arizona 73, Montana 65-- Changing of the guard in Big Sky?

-- Arizona 60, Washington State 25-- Game was 28-7 at the half. Cougars' leading scorer Lacy had an emergency appendectomy Saturday.

-- Pepperdine 70, Santa Clara 61-- Surprising Waves are 3-0 in WCC.

                *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff on a snowy day........

                13) Chicago Bears locked up Jay Cutler thru 2020 with a new contract; whether you like the signing or not, have to like the decisive nature of it. They didn’t leave anyone hanging and now have their future course plotted. All Cutler has to do now is play better, a lot better.

                12) It also means no starting QBs will be free agents this winter; only way to upgrade at QB is thru the draft or getting lucky with a backup/free agent.

                11) If you look at NFL Wild Card games over the last 10 years, favorites are 14-6 vs spread in the games involving the #’s 3-6 seeds.

                10) Over last two years, favorites are 4-0 vs spread in games where spread was 4 or less points. This is the 4th time in five years the NFC’s #5 seed is favored over the 4-seed, but the #4 seed won four of last five years.

                9) Bowl losers who return to the same bowl the next year are 14-14 vs spread; 6-5 if favored, 8-9 if the underdog.

                8) Toronto Raptors have gotten better since trading leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Kings; in their first ten games without Gay, Raptors were 7-3 and averaging 30 more passes per game. Ball moves better when one guy isn’t taking the majority of the shots.

                7) You see a college basketball score that surprises you, check out the box score; Pepperdine upset BYU the other night. Waves were 13-24 from the arc, BYU 1-11. That’s how upsets happen.

                6) Creighton had odd numbers in its easy win over Marquette Tuesday; Bluejays were just 4-4 from foul line and 12-27 inside the arc, but made 13-35 outside the arc. Rarely does a team with almost no offense inside win so easily, but Creighton beat Marquette by 18 in its Big East debut.

                5) Over the last 14 years, Dallas Cowboys are 2-12 in Week 17; in a league where very few teams have a big margin for error, this is very bad.

                4) Oregon State/Texas Tech both lost their last five regular season games, then went out and won their bowl games easily. Go figure. Handicapping bowls can be a very frustrating experience.

                3) Not pleased with people bashing Bill O’Brien for leaving Penn State. No way was he told the truth when they hired him, about how deep the trouble was they were in with the NCAA. He busted his butt for two years, kept the Lions relevant and now has moved on to a much better job in the NFL, with a team that was a division favorite four months ago. Penn State can't go to a bowl until 2016, when current freshmen are juniors/seniors.

It’s a business, plain and simple. If O’Brien doesn’t win games, he's going to get fired; he has to make as much money as he can, while he can.

                2) Hard to believe, but Chargers didn’t play games on artificial turf this season and Chiefs only played one; both teams are on carpet this weekend.

                1) Tip of the cap to retiring linebacker London Fletcher, who played 16 games a year for 16 years, after playing D-III ball in college at John Carroll (Don Shula’s alma mater). Fletcher won a Super Bowl ring with the Rams; he had a terrific career that he should be very proud of.

                  • GoDaddy Bowl: What bettors need to know

Arkansas State Red Wolves vs Ball State Cardinals (-7, 65)

Game to be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile, Alabama

                    GODADDY BOWL STORYLINES

                    1. John Thompson must feel like it’s Groundhog Day in Mobile, Ala. For the second consecutive season, Arkansas State’s defensive coordinator is also serving as interim head coach for the GoDaddy Bowl against Ball State on Jan. 4, this time after Bryan Harsin bolted for Boise State when that job opened up earlier this month. Last season he guided Arkansas State to a 17-13 win over Kent State after Gus Malzahn was hired at Auburn.

                    2. Expect plenty of offense in this matchup as Ball State comes in averaging 40.1 points with no less than 27 in every game this season. Arkansas State put up 29.7 points during the regular season, averaging more than 200 rushing yards per game.

                    3. Cardinals quarterback Keith Wenning is No. 5 in the nation with 3,933 passing yards this season and has the luxury of two 1,000-yard receivers in Willie Snead and Jordan Williams. Wenning will not only be trying to lead Ball State to its first Division I bowl victory in seven tries, but it will be a good opportunity to showcase his arm to NFL scouts as well.

                    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Ball State opened -9 and is now -7. The total is up one point from the opening 63.5.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Red Wolves are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
                    * Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
                    * Over is 4-0 in Red Wolves last four games overall.
                    * Over is 4-0 in Cardinals last four games overall.

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (7-5, 5-2 Sun Belt): Adam Kennedy’s decision to transfer from Utah State after last season and finish out his college career at Arkansas State has turned out to be a good one for everyone involved. Kennedy completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 2,349 yards and 11 touchdowns during the regular season, getting intercepted six times along the way but just twice in the last six games. He gives the Red Wolves another option in the run game as well, rushing for 514 yards and four touchdowns.

ABOUT BALL STATE (10-2, 7-1 Mid-American): Almost buried beneath a 4,000-yard passer and the pair of 1,000-yard receivers is running back Jahwan Edwards, who is 36 yards from reaching 1,000 for the second straight season. Edwards has a nose for the end zone, evident by his 38 career rushing touchdowns and is a reliable receiver out of the backfield when needed. Horactio Banks did a good job spelling Edwards but suffered a torn ACL in mid-November, leaving backup duties to freshman Teddy Williamson, who totaled 80 yards and a touchdown in the regular-season finale against Miami (Ohio).

                          • Florida State vs. Auburn

                            January 5, 2014

Auburn will carry the SEC banner into Monday’s BCS Championship Game vs. Florida State at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. If Auburn can prevail, it will be the eighth consecutive season the SEC has taken home the national title.

As of early Sunday afternoon, most books had Florida State (13-0 straight up, 11-2 against the spread) listed as a nine-point favorite with a total of 67. Gamblers can back the Tigers on the money line for a +250 return (risk $100 to win $250). For first-half wagers, the Seminoles are favored by 5.5 with a total of 34.

FSU is back in the BCS Championship Game for the first time in 13 years. In their last such appearance, the ‘Noles lost 13-2 to Oklahoma in Miami.

Jimbo Fisher’s team cruised through an easy schedule with 13 straight victories by 14 points or more. The only semblance of a close game came in Week 4 at Boston College. The Eagles raced out to a 17-3 advantage early in the second quarter behind a pair of touchdown passes from Chase Rettig.

But FSU would score 21 unanswered points and go to halftime with a 24-17 lead thanks to Jameis Winston’s Hail Mary TD pass of 55 yards to Kenny Shaw on the final play of the second quarter. BC would get an early field goal in the third quarter, but it wouldn’t get any closer in a 48-34 defeat.

In its only single-digit ‘chalk’ spot of the season, FSU rolled to a 51-14 at Clemson as a five-point favorite to snap a decade-long slump in Death Valley. Winston torched the Tigers for 444 yards passing and three TDs.

In the ACC Championship Game, FSU shook off a sloppy first-half performance to capture a 45-7 win as a 30-point favorite. Winston had three TD passes and one rushing score.

Winston became the second straight freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, joining Johnny Manziel as the only rookies to do so. The redshirt freshman completed 67.9 percent of his throws for 3,820 yards with a 38/10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Winston also ran for 193 yards and four scores.

Winston has a talented array of wide receivers led by Rashad Greene, who has 67 receptions for 981 yards and nine TDs. Kelvin Benjamin has great size and hauled in 50 catches for 957 yards and 14 TDs.

Devonta Freeman paces the ground attack, rushing for a team-high 943 yards and 13 TDs while averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Karlos Williams is a more-than-capable back-up who ran for 705 yards and 11 TDs while averaging an eye-opening 8.2 YPC. James Wilder Jr. is as good as it gets for a third-stringer, rushing for 542 yards and eight TDs with a 6.9 YPC average.

Auburn (12-1 SU, 11-2 ATS) has thrived in the underdog role, compiling a 5-0 spread record with four outright victories. Gus Malzahn’s team won as a ‘dog vs. Ole Miss (30-22), at Texas A&M (45-41), vs. Alabama (34-28) and vs. Missouri (59-42).

Tre Mason led his team to victory over Missouri at the SEC Championship Game with a record-breaking performance. Mason rushed 46 times for 304 yards and four touchdowns. Nick Marshall completed 9-of-11 throws for 132 yards and one TD without an interception. Marshall ran 16 times for 101 rushing yards and one score.

Mason’s break-out game against Mizzou earned him an invite to Heisman ceremonies. He has run for 1,621 yards and 22 TDs. Mason also has 11 catches for 121 yards. He contributes on special-teams as well and has 2,137 all-purpose yards.

Malzahn doesn’t ask Marshall to throw much, but he has been effective when asked to. Marshall has completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 1,759 with a 12/5 TD-INT ratio. Marshall has run for 1,023 yards and 11 TDs.

When AU does go to the aerial attack, Sammie Coates is the man to look for. Coates has a team-high 38 receptions for 841 yards and seven TDs.

FSU has played in two BCS Championship Games against SEC foes. On Jan. 2 of 1997, Florida drilled FSU 52-20 to win the school’s first national title. Three years later, Tennessee beat the ‘Noles 23-16 in Tempe.

Auburn was in this game three seasons ago, knocking off Oregon 22-19 as a one-point ‘chalk.’

The ‘over’ has cashed in four consecutive Auburn games and seven of its last eight. The ‘over’ went 8-5 overall for the Tigers this year, with their games producing an average combined score of 64.2 points per game.

The ‘over’ is 10-3 overall for FSU, but the ‘under’ has emerged in back-to-back games for the ‘Noles. They have seen their games average a combined score of 63.7 PPG.

Kickoff on Monday night is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
