Preview: Devils (4-7) at Maple Leafs (10-5)

      Date: November 08, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

The Maple Leafs are allowing plenty of shots per game, a statistic that finally caught up to Toronto at the end of its recent road trip.

Those numbers may not be a problem, however, against a New Jersey Devils team that is averaging the fewest shots in the NHL.

David Clarkson will face his former club for the first time when the Maple Leafs go for their fifth win in six home games Friday night against the Devils.

Toronto (10-5-0) allowed a season-high 47 shots in a 4-0 loss at Vancouver on Saturday that ended a three-game win streak. James Reimer did his best to keep the Leafs in it with 43 saves, but they were outshot for the 13th with just 21 attempts of their own.

Although Toronto sits 29th in the league with a shots-per-game differential of minus-10.67, the Leafs fortunately are in the top 10 with just 2.40 goals allowed per game.

Coming off a six-day layoff, they'll try to turn it around against the Devils (4-7-4), who rank last in the league with 25.1 shots per game and near the bottom with 29 goals.

"We're trying to get back on track in our system and the way we have to play defensively," said goalie Jonathan Bernier, who could start versus the Devils or play Saturday in Boston.

It'll certainly be a special night for Clarkson, who will take on his former teammates for the first time since signing a seven-year deal with the Maple Leafs in July. The winger had 97 goals and 73 assists in seven seasons with the Devils.

"I had a lot of friends there," said Clarkson, who has one assist in five games. "I have the utmost respect for Mr. (Lou) Lamoriello, and I've been lucky enough to play for that coaching staff, especially Peter DeBoer, someone I believe has made me successful in my career by giving me the opportunity and believing in me and understanding me as a person."

Clarkson will try to help the Leafs win their fifth straight over the Devils. They're also looking to continue their recent surge at home, where they've outscored opponents 20-12 while winning four of five.

New Jersey bounced back Thursday after consecutive shutout losses, winning for only the second time in 10 road games with a 3-0 victory at Philadelphia.

Adam Henrique got the Devils going in the first period with his team-leading fifth goal, but he's scored only once in seven career meetings with the Maple Leafs.

"Obviously the men went seven periods (without scoring), and I think regardless of what you say, there are seeds planted in the back of your mind," DeBoer said. "To get a break early like that, I think it relieved a little bit of pressure."

New Jersey had only three goals combined while dropping all three meetings with the Leafs last season. Defenseman Marek Zidlicky had a two-goal game in a 4-2 loss at Toronto on March 4, but he's found the net only once in 14 games this season.

Clarkson had the Devils' only other score in a 2-1 home loss to Toronto on April 6.

Reimer, who stopped 32 shots to beat New Jersey 2-0 at home April 15, has a 1.47 goals-against average while winning his last four against the Devils.

After Martin Brodeur posted his 122nd career shutout Thursday, Cory Schneider could get the start with the team playing the second of back-to-back games. Schneider has a .873 save percentage while losing his last three starts.

Preview: Predators (8-5) at Jets (6-9)

        Date: November 08, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Based on their success against the Jets franchise in recent years, the Nashville Predators should be thrilled that Winnipeg has moved into the Western Conference.

The visiting Predators look for a fifth consecutive victory - and third this season - over the Jets on Friday night.

The teams didn't see much of each other when the Jets franchise played in the Eastern Conference while based in Atlanta and then the past two seasons in Winnipeg. That's something Nashville (8-5-2) is probably happy to see change, as it's gone 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings and 8-1-1 in the past 10.

In the teams' first matchup since a 3-1 Nashville victory March 24, 2012, the Predators won 3-1 in their first-ever game at Winnipeg on Oct. 20. Four days later, Craig Smith scored in overtime to give Nashville a 3-2 home victory over the Jets (6-9-2).

The Predators allowed 11 goals while going 0-1-1 in the next two games, but bounced back with a 4-3 win at Los Angeles on Saturday and snapped Colorado's six-game winning streak with a 6-4 victory Wednesday.

Colin Wilson had two goals with two assists and Viktor Stalberg added one of each for Nashville, which scored the final two of the game after blowing a two-goal second-period lead.

"It was huge, a huge two points. It wasn't pretty," Nashville defenseman Shea Weber said.

Though the Predators have yielded 20 goals in five games since losing goaltender Pekka Rinne for at least four weeks with a hip injury, they've scored 18 while going 3-1-1 during that stretch.

Carter Hutton made 27 saves against the Avalanche to improve to 4-1-1 despite a 2.94 goals-against average. He stopped 72 of 75 shots in the two meetings with the Jets last month and recorded his first career win Oct. 20 at Winnipeg.

Nashville has gone 5 for 7 on the power play while starting 2-0-1 on a season-high seven-game road stretch. It went 6 for 38 with the man advantage through the first 12 games.

Wilson snapped an 11-game goal drought when he scored on the power play Wednesday.

"Obviously, it was great getting some numbers, getting the puck in the net, just to remember I can do it," said Wilson, whose last four-point game came March 8, a day before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

Smith, who also has an assist against the Jets this season, scored Wednesday for the first time since his overtime goal against Winnipeg.

The Jets lost for the fourth time in five games Wednesday, 4-1 at Chicago. Devin Setoguchi spoiled Corey Crawford's shutout bid late in the third period for the Jets, who have scored two or fewer goals in six of the last seven games.

Winnipeg is 1 for 39 on the power play in the last 12 games, and 6 for 63 (9.5 percent) on the season.

"Every day is a new day," said Setoguchi, who has three points in two games after going five straight without one. "That's the mentality of every game."

Evander Kane has one of Winnipeg's three goals against the Predators this season, but he could miss a third straight game with an unspecified injury.

Preview: Flames (6-8) at Avalanche (12-2)

          Date: November 08, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

The Colorado Avalanche have become accustomed to winning, so they're eager to bounce back after their worst defensive performance of the season.

Considering how Calgary has played on the road, the Flames might be rather accommodating.

Matt Duchene and the Avalanche look to recover from a rare loss by sending the Flames to a third straight defeat to cap their road trip Friday night.

Colorado (12-2-0) is undergoing one of the most impressive turnarounds in the NHL after finishing at the bottom of the Western Conference last season.

Under first-year coach Patrick Roy, the Avalanche are among the best teams in the league and they're getting used to success.

"When you have a taste of winning - to use a bad analogy - it's like a drug. You crave it more and more," Duchene said after Wednesday's 6-4 home loss to Nashville. "It feels terrible (to lose) and we've felt this twice this year and it feels awful. It feels that much worse. When you're used to losing, it's just another game, but when you're used to winning it hurts that much more."

The Avalanche had only allowed more than two goals once before Wednesday, and surrendered a total of nine during their six-game winning streak.

Duchene, meanwhile, continues to be one of the key offensive forces behind Colorado's turnaround, leading the team with 10 goals and 17 points. The center has totaled seven of those goals with four assists in eight home games after scoring once and recording two assists against the Predators.

P.A. Parenteau also has been much better at home than on the road. Of his 10 points, eight have come at Pepsi Center, including two goals and one assist over the past two contests.

He could have a good chance to continue that production against the Flames (6-8-2) since he's accumulated two goals and nine assists with a plus-5 rating in six career meetings.

Duchene failed to collect a point over the last two matchups with Calgary after recording seven in the seven prior meetings.

The Flames haven't done a good job keeping anyone off the scoreboard away from home. They've allowed 3.7 goals per game on the road - worst in the West - and fell for the fourth time in five games away from Calgary with Thursday's 3-2 loss at St. Louis.

The power play has been an issue at any venue recently. The Flames have failed to score on their last 28 attempts spanning eight games after going 0 for 6 against the Blues.

"I'd like to buy one," coach Bob Hartley said of the drought. "I know that the guys are working hard. It seems we just can't turn the red light on."

Michael Cammalleri, though, is providing some offense with five goals in nine games after finding the net for the second time in three contests Thursday. The center has four goals over the past three meetings with the Avalanche, including one in each of the last two at Colorado.

Jiri Hudler has been on a tear against Calgary, totaling five goals and as many assists over his last four matchups. He enters this one after finding the net in back-to-back games.

David Jones spent his first six NHL seasons with the Avalanche, and is expected to make his return to Denver after being traded to Calgary over the summer. The right wing has three goals and two assists with the Flames, and he's two seasons removed from back-to-back 20-goal campaigns.

Preview: Sabres (3-14) at Ducks (13-3)

            Date: November 08, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks have piled up the most points in the NHL, while the Buffalo Sabres have done the exact opposite.

The Ducks will try to maintain their status as the league's only unbeaten team at home Friday when they try to capitalize on another meeting with the cellar-dwelling Sabres.

Anaheim (13-3-1) sits atop the NHL with 27 points following Wednesday's 5-2 win over Phoenix. The Ducks attribute their outstanding start to lessons learned from last season, when they opened 13-2-1.

"We learned a lot from the way we started last year, and we have to continue to do what we did," right wing Corey Perry said.

Last year's early success also included 13 victories in its first 14 home games, and Anaheim is now working on a similar run. The Ducks are off to the franchise's best start at Honda Center, winning six straight while outscoring opponents 27-10.

That streak doesn't appear to be in jeopardy against the Sabres (3-14-1), who have dropped five of six after falling 2-0 at Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Ducks took the most recent meeting 6-3 at Buffalo on Saturday, when Perry and Emerson Etem had two goals apiece.

Perry also scored in each of the following two games, giving him a team-leading 10 on the season. He has six goals in eight career meetings with the Sabers, but has come up empty in the last two at home.

Ryan Getzlaf had one goal while setting up Perry twice versus the Sabres last week. The captain has earned 10 of his team-leading 18 points at home, including six in his past two games in Anaheim.

Jonas Hiller is likely to be in net, and he's won all four of his home starts behind a 1.82 goals-against average. He made 24 saves against the Coyotes, but needed just 14 in Saturday's victory at Buffalo.

The Sabres mustered a mere 19 shots against the Kings two days after a season-high 36 in an unexpected 5-4 shootout win at San Jose that opened a three-game California trip.

"I think we outchanced them in the five-on-five department," captain Steve Ott said of Buffalo's offensive performance against Los Angeles. "I liked our effort. It was the same as in San Jose. Our passion and pride has been way better in the last two games, and that's the way we have to play to have any success in this league."

Production from Matt Moulson would also help after the left wing came up empty on four shots Thursday. Moulson had two goals and four assists in his first four games after being acquired from the Islanders in a trade that sent top scorer Thomas Vanek to New York.

Moulson has eight points in 10 career meetings with Anaheim, including four in the last three.

Cody Hodgson, the team leader with 13 points, has three goals and one assist over his last four meetings with the Ducks - including one of each last weekend.
