Preview: Canadiens (11-9) at Capitals (12-9)

    Date: November 22, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Capitals are poised to learn and move on from their worst defeat of the season.

After being shut down by one of their biggest rivals, the Capitals hope to bounce back with a third straight victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.

In the midst of a 7-1-1 stretch, Washington (12-9-1) totaled 12 goals during a three-game winning streak that ended with Wednesday's 4-0 home loss to rival Pittsburgh. The Capitals were held to a season-low 18 shots, shut out for the first time in a month and outmatched by the Penguins in just about every aspect of the game.

"We always (learn from a game) no matter what, win or lose, we always do that," coach Adam Oates said. "It'll be a little harder because it was a game you were looking forward to - a team that you want to beat. There's lots of ways to lose games, and that's not really one way you want to do it."

Washington fell behind 2-0 during a first period in which they were outshot 17-6. The Penguins finished with 40 shots.

"It wasn't our best effort, but through the course of the season there are going to be games like that," center Brooks Laich said. "But you have to stick together. That's the main thing.

"We are never satisfied. You hope that you are never playing as good as you can because that means that you are never going to improve anymore."

The Capitals hope to improve a power play that's 1 for 18 in the last five games, a stretch prior to which they were converting a league-best 28.2 percent of their chances. Meanwhile, their last three opponents are 4 for 13 with the man advantage after the first 19 went 8 for 74 (10.8 percent).

Star Alex Ovechkin had his goal streak end at three games when he recorded a season-low two shots against the Penguins. Washington has won nine in a row when he scores.

Ovechkin has three goals with an assist in the last two meetings versus Montreal (11-9-2) - both on the road in April.

Though the Capitals have won eight of nine in the series, the Canadiens have earned three points in their last two trips to Washington. Montreal won 4-1 in their only visit to the nation's capital last season, the only time it has scored more than two goals in the past 12 meetings.

The Canadiens look to build on their most productive offensive game of the season after Max Pacioretty recorded a natural hat trick in Tuesday's 6-2 victory over Minnesota. They had lost seven of the previous 11 while totaling 19 goals.

Montreal's leader in points the past two seasons, Pacioretty snapped an eight-game goal drought to run his point total to seven through 13 games. He missed nine games due to injury.

"There's a lot of things probably being said about me out there," Pacioretty said of his offensive struggles. "That's how it is in this business when you're not performing. Everyone goes through it, but it felt good (Wednesday)."

He has four points in his last four games versus the Capitals but has no goals in eight career visits to Washington.

Preview: Islanders (8-11) at Penguins (14-8)

      Date: November 22, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

While both the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins have scored 63 goals, the Islanders are near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division while the Penguins are in first place.

The difference for the Penguins has been defense, and they'll try to continue their stingy ways when they host the Isles on Friday night.

Pittsburgh (14-8-0) is allowing 25.0 shots on goal per game, among the lowest marks in the NHL, and its 48 goals given up are among the fewest in the league. Marc-Andre Fleury is fourth overall with a 1.90 goals-against average.

"Smothering is always a word we use," coach Dan Bylsma said after a 4-0 victory over Washington on Wednesday, the club's second straight and third in four games since a three-game skid. "We don't give up a lot or allow (opponents) to use their speed in space."

Fleury recorded his second shutout of the season with 18 saves and has posted a 1.25 GAA in going 3-1-0 in the last four contests.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have provided the offense, with Crosby recording 28 points and notching two goals and an assist over the past two.

Malkin has 19 assists, 12 of which have come in his last nine games.

Crosby scored but the Islanders won 4-3 at Pittsburgh on Oct. 25, snapping the Penguins' four-game regular-season winning streak in the series.

Pittsburgh has been very good on home ice, winning four of five there to give it a 9-3-0 mark with only 21 goals allowed.

New York (8-11-3) hasn't been nearly as effective in its own end, giving up 71 goals for one of the highest totals in the Eastern Conference.

Kevin Poulin, playing in place of injured No. 1 goalie Evgeni Nabokov, made 24 saves in a 5-2 loss at Toronto on Tuesday.

"He's got an opportunity to play some more games," coach Jack Capuano said. "Just knowing him and the way he is, he's going take this opportunity and make the most of it."

In Poulin's only start against the Penguins on Jan. 25, 2011, he stopped 31 shots in a 1-0 Pittsburgh victory.

"This is why you play hockey," Poulin told the team's official website. "You want to play more and you want to win."

The Islanders have dropped six of eight.

"We have a lot to prove still and we're still a growing team and we need to find our game on a consistent level," leading scorer John Tavares said. "We need to be better in a lot the gritty areas, things that top teams do really well, and we don't do that enough."

Preview: Panthers (6-13) at Flames (7-11)

        Date: November 22, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

The Florida Panthers had their momentum halted on a season-high road swing, but they can still wrap up a winning trip against a Calgary Flames team can't seem to end its losing ways at home.

The Panthers hope to bounce back with their fourth win in six games Friday night when they try to deal the Flames a seventh straight home loss.

Following a nine-game losing streak, Florida (6-13-4) had won three of four - including two in a row for the first time all season - before a 4-1 loss at Western Conference-worst Edmonton on Thursday.

Scottie Upshall had the lone goal for the Panthers, who are tied with the Oilers for the second-fewest points in the league. They are 3-4-0 under interim coach Peter Horachek, who took over for the fired Kevin Dineen after a 3-9-4 start.

'The key was the energy, we didn't have any,' Horachek said. 'That's the key to the game, if your energy is better and you go out with a workman attitude, everything improves, the whole game improves from our standpoint."

Tim Thomas shined with a 1.97 goals-against average and .931 save percentage while starting all four games during the team's 3-1-0 stretch. But after allowing three goals on 34 shots against the Oilers, Thomas could give way to backup Scott Clemmensen in the second of back-to-back games.

Clemmensen, who hasn't played since a 4-1 loss at Boston on Nov. 7, is 0-1-1 with a 3.09 GAA in three appearances. If he gets the nod, Clemmensen figures to have a favorable matchup against a Calgary team that has totaled 13 goals while going 0-4-2 in its last six home games.

The Flames (7-11-4) have never lost seven consecutive home games within a single season. A loss Friday would make them winless in seven straight at home for the first time since going 0-4-2 with four ties Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2000.

Joe Colborne scored Calgary's only goal Wednesday in a 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Columbus.

'The bottom line is it's pretty tough to win when you only have one line going," said coach Bob Hartley after his team was limited to 24 shots against the Blue Jackets.

Michael Cammalleri, Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler have a combined 24 goals for the Flames, but they've totaled three during the home skid. While the 19-year-old Monahan is in his rookie season, veterans Cammalleri and Hudler also have scored only once over their last combined 13 games against the Panthers.

Calgary made a move toward the future Thursday when they shipped right wing Tim Jackman to Anaheim for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft. Jackman had one goal and 41 penalty minutes in 10 games with the Flames.

First-year goalie Reto Berra turned aside 16 of 18 shots Wednesday, falling to 0-2-2 with a 3.42 GAA in four home starts.

The Flames will have to keep an eye on Florida's leading goal-scorer Brad Boyes, who has three goals and an assist in his last five games. Boyes, however, has no goals in his last nine games against Calgary.

Second-year winger Jonathan Huberdeau has two goals and an assist during this 3-2-0 stretch. He also provided the only shootout goal in a 3-2 win at Vancouver on Tuesday.

The Panthers have won three of four meetings, though they'll make their first trip to Calgary since Oct. 14, 2010.

Preview: Lightning (14-8) at Ducks (15-6)

          Date: November 22, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

Defensive issues in the third period are a major problem for the Anaheim Ducks.

Perhaps drawing some inspiration from one of the franchise's greatest defensemen can help.

On a night when they'll honor Scott Niedermayer, the Ducks will try to solve their late-game issues and snap their longest losing streak in two years Friday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Anaheim (15-6-3) has lost five games in a row for the first time since dropping seven straight from Nov. 13-27, 2011.

The Ducks have been outscored 6-1 in the third period during the current slide, and that includes giving up a goal in a 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Nov. 14.

Those issues persisted before a bizarre sequence capped Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to New Jersey.

Anaheim allowed the tying goal with 1:01 left in regulation before Ben Lovejoy's attempted clearance in front of the net hit Corey Perry, and caromed past Jonas Hiller for the decisive score.

Coach Bruce Boudreau could forgive the error, but not the third-period goal.

"That's all I talked about (in) the previous two games," Boudreau said. "We played not to lose in the third period. You can't play the game in your own zone and expect to win. ... I don't even call it a mistake (on the final goal). It was an accident. That's the way the game was going. You knew something bad was going to happen."

Before Boudreau's team tries to get back in the win column, the Ducks will honor Niedermayer for his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Niedermayer played for the Ducks from 2005-10 and won the Conn Smythe Award while captaining them to the 2007 Stanley Cup.

Hiller hasn't been particularly sharp his last two starts, allowing nine goals on 45 shots. He stopped only 15 of 20 shots last week against the Lightning.

Ryan Getzlaf is doing his part in the offensive end, collecting six goals with three assists during a five-game point streak. He has three of those points in three games since returning from an upper-body injury that sidelined him for three, including the meeting with Tampa Bay.

Anaheim's captain has two goals and three assists in three home meetings with the Lightning.

Like the Ducks, Tampa Bay (14-8-0) has suddenly found itself struggling defensively.

The Lightning have been outscored 16-6 while losing the first three of this four-game road trip after winning six of the previous seven contests. The slide continued with Thursday's 5-1 defeat at San Jose.

"There have been six points on the table, and we have yet to find one," coach Jon Cooper said. "To me this is a rough trip. Things had been going our way for a long time this year to start the season, and now not so much."

Part of Tampa Bay's problems likely stem from losing top scorer Steven Stamkos indefinitely to a broken right leg. The team had won its first two games without him before embarking on this jaunt.

Tyler Johnson is trying to pick up the scoring slack, getting a point in each of the last four games. The center's streak started with an assist against the Ducks, and he kept it going with his fifth goal of the season Thursday.

Valtteri Filppula was held without a point and was a minus-3 against the Sharks after scoring three goals and setting up another over the previous three games. He had a season-high three points against the Ducks earlier this month.

Preview: Blue Jackets (8-11) at Canucks (11-8)

            Date: November 22, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

John Tortorella wasn't happy about seeing his Vancouver Canucks lose to one of the NHL's worst teams the last time they took the ice.

The fiery coach seems to have made line changes as the Canucks face another such opponent and look to end a five-game slide Friday night against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.

Vancouver (11-8-4) fell 3-2 in a shootout to Florida on Tuesday, and its 0-3-2 slide is its longest since an 0-5-3 skid Jan. 9-31, 2009. Tortorella wasn't happy afterward.

'It's lack of respect and we have no business (showing) a lack of respect to any hockey team,' he said. 'In the situation we're in going into tonight's game, I just don't know what we're thinking as far as how we started the game.

            'I can't explain it.'

Tortorella may employ some changes seen at Thursday's practice to try to jump-start an offense that has produced six goals during this slide. The new top line had Henrik Sedin along with Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen, while Mike Santorelli was centering a group with Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler.

Henrik Sedin has two points in his last six games while Daniel has none in that span. Tortorella also held a team meeting Thursday.

"We'll learn from the last game," the coach told the Canucks' official Twitter account. "We'll learn our lesson."

It may be easy to get back on track against the Blue Jackets (8-11-3), as the Canucks have won the last six home meetings.

Columbus improved to 2-1-0 on this five-game Canadian trip with Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Calgary as defenseman Nikita Nikitin scored in overtime. The Blue Jackets suffered a humiliating 7-0 loss to Edmonton the night before.

'As a coach, you go in and challenge your group,' coach Todd Richards said. 'There were some questions I had coming out of the Edmonton game. To me, they responded the right way.'

Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves after he was pulled against the Oilers.

'To have a chance to play right away, to reset, it's good,' Bobrovsky said. 'You don't think about the game before. It was a bad game. You have a chance to win and you get that good feeling again.'

The Blue Jackets won 3-1 over the visiting Canucks on Oct. 20. Ryan Johansen and R.J. Umberger each had a goal and an assist.

Neither Bobrovsky nor Roberto Luongo started that game, and those goalies figure to get the nod Friday.

Bobrovsky posted a 0.62 goals-against average while starting all three meetings against Vancouver last season, with each going past regulation. Luongo is 6-1-3 with a 2.15 GAA in 10 home starts with the Canucks against the Blue Jackets.

Columbus, playing without injured stars Marian Gaborik and Nathan Horton, expects to see one player return Friday. Forward Matt Calvert could play for the first time after missing 19 games with an abdominal injury.

The Blue Jackets are 1 for 35 on the power play in the last 11 meetings, while the Canucks have the league's best penalty kill at 88.2 percent.
