                        Game: 4

                        Date: September 12, 2013 12:40 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves may have thought a four-game set with the last-place Miami Marlins would be an ideal chance to move closer to an inevitable NL East title.

The series is a lot more spirited than expected.

A day after tempers flared and the benches cleared, the Braves will try to remain focused on preparing for the postseason Thursday in the series finale in Miami.

Atlanta (87-58) owns the best record in the NL, and Miami (54-90) has the worst. The disparity between the division rivals has been evident by the Braves winning seven of the first eight season meetings at Marlins Park, including victories in the first two of this series.

The Braves failed to make it three in a row Wednesday, falling 5-2. The game was marred by a bench-clearing incident in the sixth, when Brian McCann confronted Marlins' rookie pitcher Jose Fernandez after he was perceived to be showing up Mike Minor following his first home run.

"He stood there for a while, and that's disrespectful to Mike," Braves third baseman Chris Johnson said. "That was bad."

Still, Atlanta can take solace in its 11-game lead on second-place Washington in the division race.

That ample lead affords the Braves the luxury of resting starting pitchers in preparation for the postseason. That means rookie Alex Wood is getting a breather Thursday, despite only throwing 70 1-3 innings in 25 games - 10 starts.

"(Wood) hasn't pitched in September ever or this long," manager Fredi Gonzalez told the team's official website.

Gonzalez will instead give Freddy Garcia (0-1, 1.17 ERA) his first start for Atlanta.

The 36-year-old right-hander has made three appearances out of the bullpen since being recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sept. 1. His last start June 23 earned him a demotion to the minors, surrendering seven runs in 2 1-3 innings for Baltimore in a 13-5 loss at Toronto.

Garcia didn't inspire much confidence in his only start for Gwinnett on Aug. 26, giving up eight runs with five walks while being pulled with two outs in the fourth.

However, he tossed 4 2-3 scoreless innings against the Marlins after Wood was chased for giving up all of Miami's scoring in the opening 2 1-3 of a 7-0 loss Sept. 1. Garcia had a 7.13 ERA in his first three starts against the Marlins.

Nathan Eovaldi (3-6, 3.80) started opposite Wood in that matchup, and tossed a season-high eight innings to earn the win after going 0-5 with a 4.30 ERA over his previous eight games.

Eovaldi, though, may also be skipped because he's dealing with an ailing back.

"His start is going to be in jeopardy," manager Mike Redmond told the team's official website. "It looks like he will probably be unable to go, and (Brian) Flynn, we will move him up."

Flynn, 23, made his major league debut last Wednesday, allowing three runs and two homers with three walks in four innings while not getting a decision in a 9-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

The left-hander showed promise with Triple-A New Orleans, going 4-2 with a 1.36 ERA over his last nine starts before being recalled by the Marlins on Sept. 3.

He'll have to contend with 27-year-old rookie Evan Gattis, who has a .394 average with three homers, five doubles and 11 RBIs in nine meetings with the Marlins. He's 6 for 16 (.375) with three homers and seven RBIs in the past four overall games.

Wednesday couldn't have gone much better for the Oakland Athletics, who claimed a lopsided victory after their division rival's slump continued.

They'll look to add another game to their AL West lead on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Josh Willingham's two home runs sank the A's in a 4-3 series-opening defeat on Tuesday, but they bounced back with a 10-run fourth inning as part of Wednesday's 18-3 rout.

Oakland had eight doubles among its 11 extra-base hits - including one by Jed Lowrie in the fourth that was originally ruled a foul ball before umpires reversed the call. That prompted an argument from Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire, who was ejected for the fifth time this season.

Each Oakland starter registered at least one hit, one run and one RBI as the club finished with a season-high 22 hits. The Athletics (84-61) have a three-game lead over Texas, which was swept by Pittsburgh in a three-game set.

"Once we got rolling there, we never stopped," said Josh Donaldson, who was 2 for 3 to improve to 13 for 29 (.448) over his last seven games.

Athletics pitcher A.J. Griffin (13-9, 3.91 ERA hasn't received run support quite like Wednesday's win, but he's enjoyed some fairly strong offense behind him of late. He's gotten 16 runs in winning each of his last three outings and matched a career high with nine strikeouts over six innings Friday in a 7-5 win over Houston.

"Early on it was a little spotty, fastballs at times were up," manager Bob Melvin told the team's official website after Griffin needed 72 pitches to get through the first three of his six innings. "But then really, last couple innings he did his best work, no question."

It was another rough night for the Twins (63-81), whose only solace this season is likely avoiding the AL Central cellar for the first time in three years.

"A bad night, obviously, all the way around," Gardenhire said. "We didn't pitch very well, they beat the crap out of us, the ball went flying everywhere."

Seeking his own redemption will be starter Scott Diamond (5-10, 5.52) in his first outing since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester. The left-hander was optioned after struggling through 20 starts, allowing five or more earned runs in three of the last five, but went 4-0 with a 2.41 ERA in six starts for the Red Wings.

Meanwhile, reinforcements for Minnesota's offense might not be coming any time soon. Catcher Joe Mauer, who hasn't played since Aug. 19 due to a concussion, had been reportedly close to a return. But the All-Star catcher was sent home from his workout early on Wednesday after experiencing concussion-like symptoms, general manager Terry Ryan said.

Oakland's Josh Reddick, who didn't start for a second straight day since being activated from the disabled list, was 1 for 2 with a double after entering Wednesday's win in the fourth inning.

                            Date: September 12, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals' late charge at the second wild card has come at the expense of the lightweights of the NL East, and they hope to continue that run Thursday by completing a four-game sweep of the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Washington (76-69) has won a season high-tying five straight and 11 of 15 during a 19-game stretch against the three clubs below it in the division - sub-.500 teams New York, Philadelphia and Miami. After this game, the Nationals will play the Phillies and Marlins seven times as part of a 10-game homestand around a three-game set with eventual division champion Atlanta.

The Nationals have momentum on their side after Wednesday night's 3-0 win - their second shutout in this series. Dan Haren and four relievers combined on a three-hitter as Washington remained six games behind Cincinnati for the NL's last wild-card slot with 17 to play.

"The math keeps getting smaller and smaller," Haren said. "I don't know how many more games we can lose."

Tanner Roark (5-0, 0.94 ERA) will try to follow up a positive first major league start and help the Nationals potentially gain a half-game on the idle Reds. The rookie right-hander scattered four hits in a crisp 71-pitch effort over six scoreless innings in Saturday's 9-2 win at Miami to start Washington's current win streak.

"The story really was Roark. He really pitched a great game,' manager Davey Johnson said. "It's one thing to have great stuff, but he has great command. He throws it like Satchel Paige.'

One of Roark's other nine appearances came Aug. 31 against the Mets (64-80), who reached him for one run and three hits with three walks in 3 1-3 innings. He is trying to become the first rookie in franchise history to win his first six decisions since Kirk Rueter began 10-0 with the Expos in 1993-94.

Center fielder Denard Span will try to extend the majors' longest active hitting streak to a career-high 23 games after getting a first-inning single Wednesday. He has never faced Aaron Harang, who will make his Mets debut.

Harang went 5-11 with a 5.76 ERA in 22 starts this year with Seattle before being released on Aug. 30. New York signed the veteran right-hander to a minor league deal the next day, giving him the opportunity to use the season's final weeks as an audition for teams needing a starter in 2014.

"We had some other teams, but the biggest thing here was getting to finish off the season in a rotation," he told the Mets' official website. "Just to finish out my season on a strong note I think was the biggest thing."

Harang is 1-3 with a 3.92 ERA in eight starts versus the Expos-Nationals franchise, suffering a 3-1 loss in his most recent outing on Sept. 19, 2012. Adam LaRoche is 7 for 31 with three homers and three doubles lifetime versus Harang.

Washington's last four-game sweep at Citi Field came Sept. 12-15, 2011.

The New York Yankees could own a share of the AL's second wild-card spot after Thursday night's action.

The Baltimore Orioles are hoping they will be back in front of New York.

These AL East rivals met for the final time this year to close out a four-game series at Camden Yards, with 13-game loser Phil Hughes making his return to the rotation for the Yankees.

Baltimore (77-68) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of New York with a 4-2 victory in Monday's opener before the Yankees responded with wins by 7-5 and 5-4 the next two nights.

New York (78-68) has pulled within one game of Tampa Bay for the AL's second wild card. Baltimore and Cleveland trail the Rays by 1 1/2 games, with Kansas City two games back.

The season series is tied at nine wins apiece.

"We play this team so evenly, it's unbelievable,' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

This series featured a confrontation between the teams' managers in the opener. Baltimore skipper Buck Showalter is hopeful his team will avoid its first three-game slide since losing four straight Aug. 12-16.

"Tonight was a tough night for us, like last night, but these guys will turn the page and compete their rears off (Thursday)," Showalter said. "Anybody that would want to close the door on us would be making a mistake."

Girardi has opted to turn back to Hughes (4-13, 5.11), who was removed in favor of David Huff for last Saturday's 13-9 loss to Boston. Huff gave up nine runs over 3 1-3 innings.

Hughes is 0-6 with a 5.48 ERA in 10 starts since beating Minnesota on July 2.

"I'm not really worried about redemption or proving anybody wrong or stuff like that," Hughes told the Yankees' official website. "I'm just trying to throw as many quality innings as I can."

The right-hander is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA in two starts against the Orioles this year, and 2-2 with a 6.16 ERA in his last six outings at Baltimore.

He has limited Chris Davis to four hits in 19 at_bats with one homer, as the majors' home run leader looks to hit his 50th - which would match Brady Anderson's club record in 1996.

Orioles who have also fared poorly against Hughes include J.J. Hardy (4 for 20), Brian Roberts (2 for 16) and Adam Jones (.205). Nate McLouth, however, is 8 for 12.

Danny Valencia, who has a double in six at_bats against Hughes, went 4 for 4 on Wednesday and has 22 hits in his last 39 at_bats.

The Yankees have outhomered the Orioles 8-1 in this series. Alex Rodriguez and Alfonso Soriano have gone deep twice, with Rodriguez 7 for 15 in his last four games.

The Orioles will start left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.82), who is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two outings against New York this year and 1-3 with a 5.29 mark in six in his career.

Brett Gardner is 5 for 8 against Chen, who has fared well against power hitters Rodriguez (2 for 8), Robinson Cano (3 for 16) and Curtis Granderson (1 for 8).

Shortstop Brendan Ryan is hitless in six at_bats off Chen and went 0 for 4 on Wednesday in his Yankees debut after being acquired from Seattle to replace Derek Jeter, out for the season with an injured left ankle.

                                Game: 3
                                Venue: Rogers Centre
                                Date: September 12, 2013 7:07 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays were experiencing one of their most successful stretches of the season before a visit from a trio of hot Los Angeles Angels hitters.

Josh Hamilton, Kole Calhoun and Mark Trumbo will try to lead the Angels to their first series sweep of the Blue Jays in three years Thursday night.

Toronto (67-78) had won 10 of 13 before returning home, but the Angels (69-76) have cooled off the Blue Jays thus far.

Hamilton has three hits in each of the two games and went 3 for 3 with a run scored in a 5-4 victory Wednesday, Los Angeles' 11th in its last 13 road games. Calhoun hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and is the first Angels' player with at least one RBI in 14 of his past 15 starts.

"I'm playing free and starting to get into a good rhythm," Calhoun said.

Trumbo added a two-run homer - his career-high 33rd - after going 5 for 5 with five runs scored and a franchise record-tying four extra-base hits in a 12-6 win Tuesday. The first baseman is 13 for 29 (.448) with four homers in his last seven contests

While it's virtually too late to help the Angels reach the playoffs, Hamilton is closing his first season in Los Angeles well, batting .357 with 15 extra-base hits in his last 30 games.

The Angels, winners in 14 of 19 overall, are 5-1 against the Blue Jays this season but haven't swept a series from Toronto since April 16-18, 2010, at the Rogers Centre.

Garrett Richards (6-6, 3.90 ERA) will try to help his team accomplish that feat by earning a career-best third straight win. The right-hander has given up one earned run in each of his past two games and retired 14 of the final 17 batters he faced in his seven innings of an 8-3 victory over Texas on Saturday.

"I think he's kind of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," pitching coach Mike Butcher told the team's website.

Richards gave up two runs and four hits over seven innings in his only start against Toronto this season, an 8-2 victory Aug. 1.

His counterpart in Thursday's game, J.A. Happ (4-5, 5.09) will try to build on a strong outing in his first matchup with Los Angeles. The left-hander gave up one unearned run over 5 2-3 innings in an 11-2 victory in Minnesota on Saturday after going 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in his previous three outings.

"You want to finish strong. You want to remind these guys what you can do and prove to yourself what you can do," Happ said.

Hamilton is the Angels' only active player to get more than one hit off Happ, going 2 for 5 with a triple.

Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie are the two active Blue Jays with three or more hits off Richards, but Encarnacion has missed the past three games with a sprained wrist.
