    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Maybe Brad Stevens just hates recruiting, so he took Boston's $$$.

-- Jose Calderson signs on with Dallas Mavericks, giving them a solid PG to run their offense. He averaged 7.2 assists a game LY.

-- I'm thinking Houston-Lakers could be Opening Night on TNT.

-- Word out of Houston is that Rockets' center Omer Asik wants no part of being Dwight Howard's teammate; rumors have Asik getting traded to New Orleans Pelicans, with Houston using his $$$ to get Josh Smith.

-- Andre Iguodala signs on with Golden State, whose team will be much fun to watch next year, worth the price of the satellite package by themselves.

-- Milwaukee Brewers played the worst all-around ballgame I've ever seen a big league team play Friday night. They did nothing well, and lost 12-5.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

    13) Sabermetricians (math geeks who like sports) like to equate point differential with W-L record; when a team does unusually well/poorly, that team is expected to revert back towards the middle the following year.

Last year’s Indianapolis Colts were first NFL team ever to win 11+ games in a season where they were outscored; many people who like to study numbers are expecting Indy to regress a step or two this season.

    12) In baseball, there is a math formula that tells you the expected record of a team, given their runs scored/allowed. Teams that have overachieved the most over their run differential, heading into this weekend’s play, are Pirates/Bronx (+4 wins each), then Texas-Philly-Washington-Dodgers, at +3.

    11) Teams that are underachieving, given their run differential, are Orioles/ Tigers/Cardinals (all -5 wins), then Reds (-4) and Braves/Rockies (-3).

    10) Generally, that formula favors teams with good bullpens and punishes teams with bad ones. I love numbers, but I’m not convinced this Pythagorean theory means so much; it makes people from fancy private schools sound smarter, but if you chart teams’ records in close (1-2 run) games and not-close (3+ run games), you basically get the same thing, without the big words and fancy math formula.

I went to a state university; I’m still fond of charting things by hand in a notebook. I don’t sound as smart as the other guys, but at the end of the day, we usually get to the same answer.

    9) Agents usually take 3% or 4% of a client’s earnings, but new Celtics’ coach Brad Stevens’ agent gets a hell of a lot more than 4%. Terry Stevens is an attorney and her husband’s agent; you don’t see that every day.

    8) Wonder what Matthew Graves is thinking these days; the former Butler assistant left Hinkle Fieldhouse this spring to become the new head coach at South Alabama; from what I’ve read, had he stayed at Butler, he almost certainly would’ve been the new head coach of the Bulldogs.

Would you rather be the coach of a team in the Sun Belt, or a team in the Big East that’s been in the Final Four twice in the last five years?

    7) We said earlier this week that Rajan Rondo was the 21st pick (by the Suns) in the ’06 Draft; some of the luminaries picked ahead of him were: Andrea Bargnani (#1), Adam Morrison (#3), Rudy Gay (#8), Patrick O’Bryant (#9), JJ Redick (#11) and Paul Millsap (#47).

How on God’s green earth did Redick get drafted ahead of Rondo? You can teach a person how to shoot; hard to make someone a lot more athletic than they already are at age 20.

    6) Michigan Wolverines haven’t been shut out on the football field since 1984, when Iowa beat them 26-0; those Hawkeyes, with Chuck Long at QB, hammered Texas 55-17 in the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim.

    5) Since 2009, that’s only four years ago, 195 of 351 (55.6%) Division I college basketball teams have changed head coaches. That’s a lot.

    4) Eight years ago, only two of the top seven high school basketball players went to college; Josh McRoberts went to Duke, and Tyler Hansbrough went to North Carolina.

Monta Ellis was the #3 player, Louis Williams #7, Mario Chalmers #10.

Funny one is that Greg Paulus was #16 (he played at Duke, but also wound up playing QB at Syracuse for a year and is now an assistant hoop coach at Ohio State) and Danny Green was #18, the same Danny Green who almost shot the Spurs to the NBA title last month.

    3) JR Smith will sign a 4-year, $24.7M deal with the Knicks, and he doesn’t even start, though he does get starters’ minutes. What a country.

    2) Summer is flying by; Main Event at the World Series of Poker starts Saturday. Might stop by the Rio and take a look next week. Did that once before; its very quiet in that big ballroom, except for the sound of poker chips clicking together.

    1) Dwight Howard signing with the Rockets re-affirms my faith in mankind; had he signed with a team that employs Jerry West as a consultant, I'd be lost for an explanation. West is the best executive in NBA history; no way would a team he works for sign a nitwit like Howard.

NASCAR betting: Coke Zero 400 preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads back to Daytona International Speedway this week for the Coke Zero 400.

A driver has taken the checkered flag at both races (Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400) in the same season just four times. Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 earlier this year.

      Here’s our betting preview:

      Favorite: Matt Kenseth (10-1)

Kenseth is a two-time winner at DIS, but he’s never won the summer race. He also has six top-fives and 13 top-10s in 27 career starts at Daytona.

      Live dog: Jamie McMurray (27-1)

McMurray also has two Daytona victories (2010 spring race and this race in 2007). He’s coming off a runner-up finish last week and always races well at this track.

      Long shot: Kurt Busch (39-2)

Busch has two straight top-10s and four in his last six Cup races. He finished sixth at Kentucky and has 10 top-fives and 12 top-10s in 25 career starts at Daytona.

      Key stat:
Seven different drivers have prevailed in the last seven events at Daytona International Speedway.

      Notable quotable:

"Hopefully, we can carry the momentum of a strong run and a second-place finish at Kentucky to Daytona. Daytona is usually a race that is about being lucky and staying out of trouble to be in contention at the end. Our team has been strong here in the past, and I expect we will be the same this weekend. But we will need to have some luck fall our way to bring home good finish." Jamie McMurray on racing Daytona

Odds to win the Coke Zero 400 courtesy of 5Dimes:

      Matt Kenseth 10-1
      Kevin Harvick 13-1
      Jimmie Johnson 13-'
      Tony Stewart 13-1
      Kyle Busch 13-1
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 13-1
      Jeff Gordon 16-1
      Kasey Kahne 16-1
      Clint Bowyer 16-1
      Brad Keselowski 39-2
      Carl Edwards 39-2
      Kurt Busch 39-2
      Denny Hamlin 22-1
      Martin Truex Jr. 22-1
      Greg Biffle 22-1
      Jeff Burton 27-1
      Joey Logano 27-1
      Jamie McMurray 27-1
      Ryan Newman 33-1
      Juan Montoya 33-1
      Michael Waltrip 33-1
      Marcos Ambrose 45-1
      Paul Menard 45-1
      Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 45-1

I misunderstood, flashy! Sorry, buddy! I thought you were talking about his favorite sportsbooks.

I do remember reading his write-up on that book but I can't remember the name. I'll see if I can find it after I free up today.

It might take a little time because Armadillo's site doesn't include a search feature and I'll just have to hunt through the archives. I know it was sometime during the last cfb season that he wrote about that book. I'll see if I can find it.

I'm looking at a busy day but I'll get on it as soon as I can. I should be able to tell you something tonight.

          Good luck today, flashy!

                          MLB

                          Saturday, July 6

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most valuable MLB stats for baseball bettors
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few years back we asked a group of professional bettors which MLB stats they lean on the most when handicapping the day-to-day baseball schedule.

Here are the five prime numbers they singled out, why they’re important to baseball bettors and which clubs excel or just plain suck when it comes to these stats.

                          Strikeout-to-walk ratio

Walks can quickly turn into runs when a pitcher is struggling with his command. And runs can be bad, depending on which side of the scoreboard they end up on.

The Detroit Tigers (3.43 K/BB) and St. Louis Cardinals (3.20 K/BB) have the best team strikeout-to-walk ratios in the majors, while the Houston Astros (1.91 K/BB) and San Diego Padres (2.09 K/BB) bring up the rear.

As far as individual pitchers, Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright tops the bigs with a 9.00 K/BB and has earned +2.22 units. Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma (5.72 K/BB, +4.55 units) and Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee (5.48 K/BB, +1.32 units) are also among the leaders in Ks-to-walks ratio.

                          BA versus left-handed pitchers

Oddsmakers will usually tag an extra couple cents on the moneyline when a lefty takes the mound. Finding value on the other side of those odds can pay off.

The Tampa Bay Rays (.291) and San Francisco Giants (.279) are tops in the majors when it comes to facing southpaws. On the other end of the scale, the Washington Nationals (.215) and Miami Marlins (.223) can’t seem to catch up to lefties.

                          Quality starts

Baseball bettors want the best bang for their buck when handicapping starters. Getting six good innings from the starter puts you in a solid position to win most bets.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the exception to that train of thought. They lead the big leagues with 56 quality starts but have had most of those ruined by a bullpen ranked second worst in the majors.

Detroit (55 QS), Atlanta (54 QS), and Cincinnati (53 QS) are also among the leaders in quality starts. Minnesota (31 QS), Toronto (34), Colorado (35) and Milwaukee (35) have gotten the least from their starting staffs.

                          One-run games

Winning a baseball bet isn’t always easy and bettors will go through a few tough sweats over the course of 162 games. Teams with the ability to come through in crunch time make for smart wagers.

Cleveland owns an 18-8 mark in one-run games this season and Texas is right behind them at 15-8 in one-runners. Toronto and Philadelphia, two of the more costly bets this season, each boast a 9-16 record in one-run affairs.

BA with RISP and two outs

Clutch hitting is the difference between winning and losing a bet. Putting a play on a team that doesn’t crumble when the chips are down can keep you in the black over the course of a summer.

St. Louis is hitting .321 with runners in scoring position and two outs – best in the majors. Cleveland is tops in the American League with a .289 BA with RISP and two away. Cincinnati has put its tail between its legs with a .178 BA with RISP in two outs, and Milwaukee hasn’t been much better with a .182 mark in that situation.

UDOG, you are correct to point out miserable game played by Brewers last night--but did you notice Brewers were actually favored in that game---maybe the worst line of the whole year!!!
