    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Its hard to make an NBA roster.......here are the guys on the Celtics' team in the Orlando Summer League, which starts play Sunday.......

-- Tim Abromaitis-- Played three years at Notre Dame, wrecked his knee, and didn't play last season.

-- Courtney Fells-- Played at NC State; has played pro ball in Dominican Republic, Cyprus and Israel.

-- Jayson Granger-- Guard from Uruguay play pro ball in Spain last year.

-- Lawrence Hill-- Stanford alum has played in NDBL and in Israel.

-- Eli Holman-- Big guy who layed three years at U of Detroit; didn't play last year.

-- Colton Iverson-- Scored 14 ppg for Colorado State LY; was acquired by Boston from the Pacers during the draft last week.

-- Darius Johnson-Odom-- Played four games for Lakers and 13 games for their team in D-League. Played college ball at Marquette.

-- Fab Melo-- First round pick from Syracuse LY; played in six games for the Celtics this past season.

-- Tony Mitchell-- Alabama alum was Rookie of Year in D-League.

-- Kelly Olynyk-- Big man from Gonzaga is probably only guy on this list who is pretty much assured of a roster spot this fall, unless he flops.

-- Phil Pressey-- 5-11 PG left Missouri a year early; his dad was a player in the NBA, and used to be an assistant with the Celtics.

-- Omar Reed-- Played NAIA ball at Bluefield, and in D-League last year.

-- Nolan Smith-- Duke alum averaged 9.9 mpg with Portland last couple of seasons. He's an unrestricted free agent.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a holiday weekend........

    13) Mark Appel, #1 pick in the baseball draft last month, makes his pro debut over the river in Troy tonight, pitching for the Tri-City Valley Cats, the Astros' team in the NY-Penn League.

    12) Tyreke Evans winds up in New Orleans as part of a 3-way deal that sees Greivis Vasquez wind up in Sacramento, Robin Lopez in Portland.

    11) Red Sox now have 13 games with 15+ hits, most in big leagues.

    10) Big hire coming up fior Butler AD Barry Collier, who is also the former Butler basketball coach; Bulldogs are moving to the Big East, their third league in three years and with recruiting season starting Wednesday, they have no head coach. Not the best situation.

    9) One of Butler's incoming freshmen is Elijah Brown, whose dad Mike is the old/new coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

    8) Speaking of the Cavaliers, they signed free agent Earl Clark away from the Lakers, as they continue to build a team that Lebron James might want to play on a year from now, when he becomes a free agent.

    7) San Antonio signed free agent Marco Bellinelli, as their tradition of having a lot of foreign-born players continues.

    6) Dodgers' Hanley Ramirez has six HRs, 16 RBI in his last 15 games.

    5) Florida Gators' QB Jeff Driskel signed a contract with the Red Sox, but remains committed to the Gators, and will only play baseball after he is done pursuing his football dream.

    4) Major league umpire Brian Runge was fired by MLB after a series of drug-related offenses. Runge's dad and grandfather both umpired in the big leagues; he had the plate for two no-hitters last season.

    3) Arizona gave up game-tying homers to a pair of stiffs in the 13th/14th innings Thursday, but scored again in the 15th and held off the Mets 5-4, their 10th win in 13 extra inning games this season.

    2) Joey Chestnut downed 69 hot dogs/rolls in 12:00 Thursday, winning the Coney Island hot dog eating contest for the 7th year in a row; someone needs to get Chestnut and his old eating rival Kobiyashi back together again.

    1) Red Sox had the AL's best record on July 4; Pirates had the NL's best record. Last time they both had their league's best record on July 4 was way back in 1903.

NASCAR betting: Coke Zero 400 preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads back to Daytona International Speedway this week for the Coke Zero 400.

A driver has taken the checkered flag at both races (Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400) in the same season just four times. Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 earlier this year.

      Here’s our betting preview:

      Favorite: Matt Kenseth (10-1)

Kenseth is a two-time winner at DIS, but he’s never won the summer race. He also has six top-fives and 13 top-10s in 27 career starts at Daytona.

      Live dog: Jamie McMurray (27-1)

McMurray also has two Daytona victories (2010 spring race and this race in 2007). He’s coming off a runner-up finish last week and always races well at this track.

      Long shot: Kurt Busch (39-2)

Busch has two straight top-10s and four in his last six Cup races. He finished sixth at Kentucky and has 10 top-fives and 12 top-10s in 25 career starts at Daytona.

      Key stat:
Seven different drivers have prevailed in the last seven events at Daytona International Speedway.

      Notable quotable:

"Hopefully, we can carry the momentum of a strong run and a second-place finish at Kentucky to Daytona. Daytona is usually a race that is about being lucky and staying out of trouble to be in contention at the end. Our team has been strong here in the past, and I expect we will be the same this weekend. But we will need to have some luck fall our way to bring home good finish." Jamie McMurray on racing Daytona

Odds to win the Coke Zero 400 courtesy of 5Dimes:

      Matt Kenseth 10-1
      Kevin Harvick 13-1
      Jimmie Johnson 13-'
      Tony Stewart 13-1
      Kyle Busch 13-1
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 13-1
      Jeff Gordon 16-1
      Kasey Kahne 16-1
      Clint Bowyer 16-1
      Brad Keselowski 39-2
      Carl Edwards 39-2
      Kurt Busch 39-2
      Denny Hamlin 22-1
      Martin Truex Jr. 22-1
      Greg Biffle 22-1
      Jeff Burton 27-1
      Joey Logano 27-1
      Jamie McMurray 27-1
      Ryan Newman 33-1
      Juan Montoya 33-1
      Michael Waltrip 33-1
      Marcos Ambrose 45-1
      Paul Menard 45-1
      Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 45-1

NCAAF Games of the Year: Ohio State big home faves vs. Wisconsin

        NCAAF Week 5:
Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-11)

        Past History:
Ohio State 4-1 SU/ATS vs. Wisconsin last five Years

        Early Look at Wisconsin:
There are major changes in Madison right now with Brett Bielema bolting for “greener pastures” in the SEC. Gary Andersen (Utah State) takes over and inherits a program that has been to the Rose Bowl three consecutive years (lost all three). Don't be fooled by last year’s 8-6 record, as all six defeats came by seven points or less, one of them to Ohio State in Madison, making this a huge revenge game. The Badgers have 14 returning starters and are the clear challenger to the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Leaders Division. They have a win total of 8.5, which seems low.

        Early Look at Ohio State:
Things could not have gone better during Urban Meyer’s first season in Columbus, as the Buckeyes ran the table and finished 12-0. Well, there was that one “small” caveat. They were ineligible to play for a Big Ten or BCS Championship. Now cleared of NCAA sanctions, many have the Buckeyes finishing the regular season unbeaten one more time and potentially playing Alabama for a national championship. They will be favored in every game. One interesting tidbit is that this could be the only year that they play arch rival Michigan in successive weeks (regular season finale, Big Ten Championship Game). Quarterback Braxton Miller is a Heisman Trophy favorite and this is a legit BCS title contender.

        Where This Line Will Move:
With this being the Big Ten opener for both schools, there’s a good chance it will be a battle of unbeaten teams. Ohio State definitely will be 4-0. Wisconsin does have a road trip to Arizona State to worry about. With the game in Columbus and Ohio State being a public team, look for Wisconsin to be getting even more points by kickoff. The Badgers have, however, dropped seven of their last eight Big Ten road openers.

Stamps at Roughriders: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-2, 54)

The Calgary Stampeders emerged from Week 1 as the top-ranked team in the CFL following a dominant showing at home against the BC Lions. The Stampeders (1-0) will try to defend their ranking when they visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) on Friday. Saskatchewan, which is ranked fourth, is also off to a strong start after controlling its game against the Edmonton Eskimos from the opening kickoff despite missing new addition Geroy Simon on offense.

Calgary defeated the Roughriders 36-30 in the West Semi-Finals last year en route to an appearance in the 100th Grey Cup in Toronto. Saskatchewan will host this year’s Grey Cup, adding extra weight to its home opener. The Roughriders kept the Eskimos out of their end zone through three quarters last week, a defensive showing they would be happy to duplicate against the high-octane Stampeders offense.

          TV:
          9 p.m. ET, TSN

          ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (1-0):
Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes and running back Jon Cornish both received player of the week honors after their strong showing in Week 1. Hughes, who was named defensive player of the week, led Calgary with three sacks. Cornish, who was named the top Canadian player, ran for a league-best 172 yards and two touchdowns. Cornish, who also caught one pass for 20 yards, pledged to donate $10 to Calgary flood relief for every yard he earned in the game, totaling $1,920 that he rounded to an even two thousand dollars after the game.

          ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (1-0):
Running back Kory Sheets paced Saskatchewan’s offense in Week 1, carrying the ball 17 times for 131 yards and one touchdown. Sheets’ effective running opened up the field for slotback Chris Getzlaf, who caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Getzlaf only had two touchdowns last season. Getzlaf’s resurgence and the impending return of Simon from injury crowds a backfield that already includes 2012 CFL All-Star slotback Weston Dressler. Rookie defensive lineman Levi Steinhauer, who is from nearby Moose Jaw, Sask., forced two fumbles in his CFL debut.

          TRENDS:

          * Stampeders are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Saskatchewan.
          * Over is 10-1 in Stampeders’ last 11 games overall dating back to last season.
          * Roughriders are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Week 2 games.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. Calgary defeated Saskatchewan in three of four meetings last year - including the West Semi-Final. Cornish was held to just 67 rushing yards in the Roughriders' only victory.

          2. Stampeders QB Drew Tate showed no ill effects of last year’s injury-riddled campaign last week, throwing for 237 yards and three touchdowns.

          3. Saskatchewan released WR Greg Carr on Tuesday after he caught one pass for five yards in the season opener.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strategies for betting MLB team totals
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baseball is front and center in the betting world for the next couple months, so it's a good time to review MLB betting strategies.

Here are a few MLB team totals betting tips from an article recently published by Pinnacle Sports:

                      1) Gauging the juice

There is generally not enough action for books to deal these lines as sharp as they would a total or a runline. The key is to make sure you’re getting a good number and take solace in the fact you’re giving these lines more attention than the book is.

                      2) Common mistakes in calculating team totals

Myth: The two team totals should add up to the total for the game.

                      The article reads:

“If both teams will score 5 or more runs exactly half the time, meaning both teams have a fair Team Total of 4.5, you could safely bet the game to go over 9.5 at even money even though the Team Totals only add up to 9. That’s the way runs are distributed. It’s possible to score 24 runs in a game, but it’s impossible to score less than 0.”

                      3) Over or Under while playing team totals?

If the two team totals add up to a half run less than the game total, it’s a good idea to bet the under as long as the combined juice is small.

                      The article reads:

“Squares often bet with an unfounded optimism on what they’d like to see happen i.e. plenty of runs, and not what is most probable.”

                      4) Soft Lines

If a bettor wagers the mathematically incorrect side of a team total, especially if this happens twice, chances are this will move the line and cause it to present value. Sometimes, you may be lucky enough to find a line that has gone in the opposite direction of the main betting lines.

                            Flashy,

I know he plays some at LVH but he really likes the Orleans' sportsbook. He likes Texas Station a lot, too, but I believe his fave is the Orleans.
