  • Preview: Giants (35-32) at Braves (40-28)
    Game: 3
    Venue: Turner Field
    Date: June 16, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves used some late theatrics to rebound from their most lopsided home loss and snap one of their longest skids. There wasn't as much drama in their most recent matchup with Tim Lincecum.

The San Francisco Giants right-hander shut down the Braves last month and will try to help his club become the first to win a series in Atlanta this season Sunday night.

After getting blanked 6-0 in the series opener, Atlanta (40-28) avoid another loss by scoring two runs in the ninth inning Saturday. That 6-5 victory snapped a season high-tying four-game skid.

Freddie Freeman had the winning single one batter after Justin Upton drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. B.J. Upton started the rally from a three-run deficit with the second of his two home runs in the sixth inning.

"It's just nice to be able to come back," Freeman said. "We battled and to come back and get a win makes it nice."

With the victory, the Braves improved their major league-best home record to 22-8 and moved to 14-3 since May 5 at Turner Field.

They'll try to add to that gaudy record with a better performance against Lincecum than in a 5-1 defeat May 12.

Lincecum (4-6, 4.70 ERA) allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings and struck out seven in that win, which snapped a personal four-game skid to Atlanta. He's gone 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA in his five subsequent starts and couldn't outduel Pittsburgh top prospect Gerrit Cole in an 8-2 loss Tuesday.

Lincecum gave up four runs - two earned - while failing to make it past the fifth inning for the second time in three outings.

"I kind of put myself in some holes with some pitches that weren't really even close to the zone," Lincecum said. "I really wasn't challenging the zone with quality strikes. When I did throw quality strikes, they put them in play and hurt us."

Lincecum, who turned 29 on Saturday, has lost in each of his last three starts in Atlanta but was on the wrong end of a 1-0 score in his most recent game there Aug. 18, 2011.

His counterpart for the series finale, Julio Teheran (4-3, 3.62), is 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA in his last four home starts but is coming off one of his worst efforts of the season. The right-hander tied a career high by giving up five runs in his six innings of a 7-6 loss in San Diego on Monday.

Teheran won his only start against San Francisco (35-32) on May 9, giving up three runs over seven innings in a 6-3 final.

Hunter Pence went 0 for 3 against Teheran but is batting .400 (12 for 30) with five doubles and eight RBIs in his last seven games overall. Pence is also hitting .355 with 19 RBIs in his last 29 games against Atlanta.

    • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

This is how strange the NBA has become.........

-- Since 2010, 25 of 30 NBA teams have changed coaches.

-- Since 2010, Charlotte has had four coaches, Detroit three.

-- For some reason, Cleveland Cavaliers re-hired Mike Brown, who couldn't win them a title when he had Lebron James, and couldn't win in LA when he had Kobe Bryant. Brown should hug his agent daily.

-- The Clippers, Denver and Memphis all went 56-26 or better this season, but all three will have new coaches next season. None of the three deposed coaches left voluntarily.

-- Jason Kidd was named coach of the Nets less than two weeks after he retired as a player. TWO WEEKS!!!!!

-- Doc Rivers has three years, $21M left on his contract, but Boston and the Clippers are talking about a huge trade, where Rivers would wind up coaching Garnett and Pierce in the Staples Center. Go figure.

      *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

      13) You watch these Stanley Cup playoff games, you admire the great effort these players give, and you see how fine a line the difference between winning and losing is. The first two games lasted the length of three, with all the OTs; it is just great entertainment.

      12) Last night's Bruin win was the 26th OT game of these playoffs.

      11) Indiana pitcher Joey DeNato threw a 136-pitch complete game as Indiana blanked Louisville 2-0 in the College World Series; kid is undrafted as a junior, so he may not be a pro prospect-- is 136 pitches abusive? As I sit here and type this, I'd say no, if the kid isn't a pro prospect.

      10) For the recvord, the most pitches thrown in a major league game so far this season is 132, by Clayton Kershaw.

      9) Pretty cool of Indiana hoop coach Tom Crean to go to Omaha for the College World Series; according to Mapquest, its 650 miles from Omaha to Bloomington, so not an easy road trip.

      8) ESPN's Orel Hershiser, who is very good on TV, said baseball teams in the Big Dozen are getting better because schools have become more liberal about letting coaches pull (partial) scholarships from failed players who don't play up to expectations. Well, alrighty then....

      7) In their last 14 home games, Pirates have won three 1-0 games.

      6) Trouble for the Bronx Bombers, with Mark Teixeira headed back to NYC to see a doctor about his injured wrist. He didn't even wait until after the road trip ends Sunday; he's flying back before the game.

      5) Jeremy Guthrie allowed five runs in seven IP in a 5-3 loss at Tampa Bay Saturday; he faced 31 batters, who swung at 41 of his 114 pitches, and didn't miss any of them. Thats not good for Mr Guthrie's fantasy owners.

      4) Speaking of fantasy baseball, I'm in a 16-team keeper league, with 25-man rosters where you can draft minor leaguers. I'm typing this at 4am, and while I've been typing, a guy in our league just picked up a third baseman from the Class A South Atlantic League. At 3:40am. Pretty fun league.

      3) Cal Bears must have a damn good golf team; three of their kids made it to the US Open, and two of the three made the cut.

      2) Last time the Stanley Cup finals were 1-1 after two games was 2004, when Calgary-Tampa Bay were being ignored by most of America; coach of the champion Lightning that year? John Tortorella, just canned by the New York Rangers-- he's a pretty darn good coach.

      1) If you're over 50 like me, you remember cigarette commercials on TV; now it is electronic cigarettes they're peddling, and the commercials are all over TV. Commercials for tobacco cigarettes were outlawed decades ago. It is still odd to be in Las Vegas and see people smoking in casinos, since here in New York, smoking indoors in public places isn't allowed.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Under trending in MLB Father's Day games
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we look forward to celebrating Father's Day this Sunday, we take a look at the over/under results during the past seven seasons in the MLB schedule on the day we celebrate dear old dad.

Over the past few seasons, Father's Day is a day on the calendar where we are used to a full slate of interleague games. This season, with the new IL format, the Washington Nationals at the Cleveland Indians is the only IL matchup on the board.

In total, there have been 105 games played on Father's Day. The over/under record is 49-54-2 in those games.

Since 2009, however, the trend is leaning toward the under. In that time, the under is 38-22 in the 60 Father's Day games.

Last year, the under went 11-4.

Here is a look at the O/U break down on Father's Day since 2006:

              June 18, 2006: 8-7 O/U
              June 17, 2007: 12-3 O/U
              June 15, 2008: 7-6-2 O/U
              June 21, 2009: 5-10 O/U
              June 20, 2010: 5-10 O/U
              June 19, 2011: 8-7 O/U
              June 17, 2012: 4-11 O/U

Sunday Night Baseball: Giants at Braves
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-147, 8)

                TIP TOP TIM NO MORE

Tim Lincecum is far from his ace days as he takes the mound on Sunday night. The righty is just 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA. He has given up 15 runs in his last three road starts against the Pirates, Rockies, and Diamondbacks. The Giants’ pitcher faced the Braves at home back on May 12 and gave up just two hits and three walks in seven innings while picking up a 5-1 win. Lincecum has been inconsistent this season; he has six starts in which he has allowed two earned runs or less. Those good outings have been mixed in with seven other starts where he has allowed four runs or more.

                JULIO IS JARRING HITTERS

Julio Teheran is 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA on the year for the Braves. He has struck out 58 batters while walking just 15 hitters in 77 innings of work. The last time he was home, the righty nearly no-hit the Pirates. His next start was a rough one in San Diego as he gave up five runs in just six innings of work. He beat the Giants in San Francisco back on May 9. In that game, Teheran gave up three runs and seven hits striking out three while walking none. In his last 10 starts, Teheran has allowed six hits or more seven times.

                INJURY REPORT

The Giants are a relatively healthy team. They have Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval on the disabled list. The Panda is expected to be activated around June 24th. They are also without Ryan Vogelsong who is dealing with a fractured right hand. Atlanta’s injury list is also short and about to become shorter with the return of Brandon Beachy on June 18. He had Tommy John surgery last year. The bullpen is without Jonny Venters and Eric O’Flaherty who both underwent Tommy John this season.

                TRENDS

The under is 4-1-1 in the Giants’ last six Sunday games.
Giants are 4-1 in Lincecum’s last five Sunday starts

Braves are 12-4 in their last 16 Sunday games
The under is 5-1 in Teheran’s last six starts.

                HITTERS TO WATCH

                Brian McCann 10-for-30 vs. Lincecum
                Justin Upton 11-for-47 vs. Lincecum

                Buster Posey 2-for-3 vs. Teheran

                        • Preview: Orioles (40-30) at Tigers (38-29)
                          Game: 1
                          Venue: Comerica Park
                          Date: June 17, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

Max Scherzer would gladly trade personal accomplishments for team success, but he realizes his solid numbers and exceptional start have given the Detroit Tigers more opportunities for victories.

He'll look to become the first 10-game winner in the AL by helping guide the Tigers past the surging Baltimore Orioles on Monday night at Comerica Park.

Scherzer (9-0, 3.19 ERA) has won four of his last five starts while posting a 2.00 ERA and striking out 38 over 36 innings. He gave up two runs in seven frames of a 3-2 win over Kansas City on Tuesday to become the first Tigers starter to begin a season 9-0 since Vern Kennedy in 1938.

The right-hander has lost only once over his last 27 starts, including three in last year's playoffs, going 16-1 with a 2.66 ERA.

"Don't get me wrong - I love being 9-0, but it's more important that we (win)," Scherzer said. "For me, it's all about going out there and pitching deep into the game and (being) effective. The way I look at success is how well I pitch (and not the amount of personal victories)."

Scherzer would have added another win to his credit after he struck out 10 and allowed three runs in eight innings versus the Orioles on May 31, but the bullpen allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth in Detroit's 7-5 defeat.

He's 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in his last four starts against Baltimore. Adam Jones is 8 for 15 with a homer lifetime off Scherzer, who may have a tough time with a Baltimore club that has won six of eight.

Jones went 2 for 4, Nick Markakis had four hits and Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 23rd homer Sunday as the Orioles (40-30) beat Boston 6-3. Manny Machado added two hits and has a career-high 14-game hitting streak, which began during Baltimore's 4-2 win over Detroit on June 2.

Baltimore has won four of its last five matchups against the Tigers, with the only loss coming June 1 with scheduled starter Jason Hammel on the mound.

Hammel (7-4, 5.24) pitched three-plus innings and gave up five runs - including back-to-back-to-back homers to Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila to chase him in the fourth inning - in a 10-3 defeat earlier this month.

The right-hander is 2-2 with a 7.66 ERA in five career starts versus the Tigers, with Peralta going 7 for 15 with two homers lifetime against him.

Hammel has given up at least four runs in seven starts, including four in six innings of Baltimore's 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. He'll again face the AL Central-leading Tigers (38-29), who are coming off a 5-2 win over Minnesota on Sunday.

Torii Hunter hit his 300th career homer and finished with two hits to snap a 0-for-13 slump.

``It's special,' Hunter said. ``I just wanted one. To get 300 home runs in the major leagues ... this is a tough game to play.'

Miguel Cabrera, hitting just .179 over his last nine games, is hitting .500 with eight homers over his last 12 versus Baltimore.

                            Game: 1
                            Venue: Rogers Centre
                            Date: June 17, 2013 7:07 PM EDT

In their return home, the Toronto Blue Jays will seek to extend their longest win streak in two seasons while helping Josh Johnson register his first victory with the club.

After taking a couple extra days to heal a blister, Johnson will try to end his drought with another strong outing against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

After dropping the opener to a six-game trip, Toronto (32-36) responded by winning five in a row and completed a sweep of Texas with a 7-2 victory Sunday.

Colby Rasmus homered for the third straight game, and the red-hot Adam Lind had another three hits, including a three-run homer, in that win. Lind is batting .448 with five homers and 15 RBIs in his last 21 games.

The Blue Jays haven't won six in a row since May 10-16, 2011, and Johnson (0-2, 5.40 ERA) is seeking his first victory since Sept. 6. The right-hander has given up three or fewer runs in his two starts since a stint on the disabled list for inflammation in his pitching arm.

Johnson gave up three runs and a season-high four walks over five innings while dealing with a blister on his right middle finger June 9 against Texas. The Blue Jays' bullpen, however, blew a one-run lead in a 6-4 defeat and his next start was pushed back twice.

"They want to try and let (blister) completely heal so it doesn't become a problem," Gibbons told the team's website. It just makes sense to push him back. Get up there in the cool climate of (Toronto)."

That extra time off as well as a matchup with a more familiar opponent could help Johnson end a nine-start winless drought.

The right-hander spent his first eight seasons with Miami and went 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA in five starts against Colorado. That ERA represents his best as a starter against any team he's faced at least twice.

In his only interleague start this season, Johnson gave up two runs over seven innings in a 2-1 defeat in San Francisco. He has received 13 runs of support in his six outings this season.

His counterpart, Jorge De La Rosa (7-4, 3.49), had been given 55 runs in his first 13 starts of 2013 before getting none in a 5-1 loss to Washington on Wednesday.

The left-hander gave up three runs over 5 1-3 innings as his five-game winning streak ended. De La Rosa had a 2.76 ERA during that run and also dealt with a cut on his left middle finger in a 10-9 win against San Diego on June 7.

"He struggled through some of this outing and again in the end kept us close enough to win a game," manager Walt Weiss said. "He had to work pretty hard, threw a lot of pitches. Kept us in striking distance."

De La Rosa lost his only previous start against Toronto on April 11, 2007, and will try to lead Colorado (37-33) to its first three-game win streak since May 21-24.

Dexter Fowler went 1 for 4 in Sunday's 5-2 win in his return to the lineup. He left after being hit by a pitch Thursday and appeared as a pinch-runner Friday before sitting out Saturday.

Fowler is 4 for 6 with two doubles lifetime against Johnson.

The home team has won all 12 games between the teams, with Toronto sweeping three-game series in both 2002 and 2007.

The Cleveland Indians have climbed back to .500 following an eight-game losing streak. The Kansas City Royals need one more win to do the same.

These AL Central foes meet in Cleveland for the first time this season Monday night.

With eight strong innings from Corey Kluber, who helped the Indians (34-34) end an eight-game skid Tuesday, Cleveland won for the fourth time in five games Sunday, 2-0 over Washington.

The victory kept the Indians one-half game in front of the Royals (33-34) for second place as Kansas City defeated Tampa Bay 5-3 later Sunday.

The Royals are 12-5 since their own 0-8 stretch.

"Kansas City is playing really well now,' Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "... They're playing with a lot of confidence."

Kansas City has won each of James Shields' last three starts, but he hasn't picked up a victory during that stretch. Shields (2-6, 2.79 ERA) has posted a 2.14 ERA in those outings but has received three total runs of support.

He gave up two runs in seven innings of a 3-2, 10-inning victory over Detroit on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately I haven't gotten a lot of wins, but my team has won the last three games I've been out, and that's all that really matters to me," he told the Royals' official website.

The right-hander has gone 0-4 with a 2.64 ERA in eight starts since his last win April 30. His run-support average of 2.97 is among the worst in baseball.

Shields will get his first look at the Indians in a Royals uniform after not getting a turn when the teams split four games in Kansas City from April 27-29.

Cleveland will continue its nine-game homestand with Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 15.26) on the hill.

In his last start, the right-hander gave up six runs and 10 hits in four-plus innings of a 6-4 loss at Detroit on June 8.

He hasn't appeared in a game since then after serving a seven-game suspension for hitting Kevin Youkilis in his season debut, a 14-1 loss to New York Yankees on April 9. He surrendered seven runs in 3 2-3 innings before getting ejected.

Carrasco, who missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, had just finished a five-game suspension after hitting Kansas City's Billy Butler on July 29, 2011, in his second to last start before getting shut down for the season.

Butler has faced Carrasco more than any other batter, going 6 for 13 with two homers. He is batting .364 with seven RBIs during the Royals' 10-2 surge.

Jason Kipnis has hit .529 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs during the Indians' 4-1 stretch. The second baseman, who has a 10-game hitting streak and a four-game RBI streak, is 2 for 3 with a double off Shields.

Nick Swisher has plenty of experience against Shields, going 8 for 45 (.178), though three of those hits were home runs. Swisher, though, is questionable after missing Sunday's game with a sore left shoulder.

I'm grinding," Swisher told the team's official website before the last contest. "I want to be in there every day, regardless of what I got going on. Obviously, it's starting to physically show a little bit.

"I've been kind of battling this shoulder thing all year, which has been super frustrating for me because I've never had something like this before."

                              • Preview: Nationals (34-34) at Phillies (33-37)
                                Game: 1
                                Venue: Citizens Bank Park
                                Date: June 17, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals' acquisition of Dan Haren in the offseason played a role in the team not re-signing John Lannan, who wound up agreeing to a deal with the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies.

Haren looks to win for the first time in more than five weeks, and Lannan comes off the disabled list to face his former team for the first time as Washington visits Philadelphia in the opener of a three-game series Monday night.

Lannan went 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA in 134 starts for Washington from 2007-12, but he pitched in the minors for most of last season and made only six starts in the big leagues.

The Nationals decided to move on and signed Haren to a one-year, $13 million contract, leaving Lannan to agree to a one-year deal with Philadelphia.

Haren (4-8, 5.70 ERA), though, is 0-5 with a 6.29 ERA in six starts since beating Detroit on May 9. He's especially struggled over his last two, allowing three homers and five runs in four innings of a 10-1 loss to the New York Mets on June 5 before giving up five more runs in five innings of an 8-3 defeat at Colorado on Tuesday.

"I feel like I am letting the team down. It's not for a lack of effort, it's not for a lack of work and not for a lack of belief,' Haren said. "I believe every time I step on the mound I'm going to win and I have to keep that feeling. I've been good for a long time, this is just a bump in the road.'

The only start in which Haren didn't suffer the loss during his cold stretch was against Philadelphia on May 25, when he allowed three runs - including a homer to Domonic Brown - while striking out a season-high 10 in six innings of Washington's 5-3 defeat.

The right-hander is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in five career starts versus the Phillies - the only team he hasn't beaten.

Lannan (0-1, 6.14) has been on the DL with a strained quad tendon in his left knee since giving up six runs in 1 2-3 innings of an 11-2 loss to Cincinnati on April 17.

"With the injury, every day you look for something that got better from the day before," the left-hander told the team's official website. "I've been honest the whole process and I think I'm ready."

Manager Charlie Manuel believes he's ready, too.

"He's responding real well. He's throwing the ball good," Manuel said.

Lannan allowed four runs over 11 innings in two minor league rehab appearances and will face a Nationals lineup that was stymied in a 2-0 loss to Cleveland on Sunday.

Defending East champion Washington (34-34) had won five of its previous seven, plating at least five runs in those victories.

Cleanup hitter Adam LaRoche is mired in an 0-for-15 slump and is hitless with five strikeouts in 12 career at_bats against Lannan.

"Eventually, just like everything else in baseball, it will turn around," shortstop Ian Desmond told the team's official website. "We are not necessarily running out of time, but we need to start taking more steps in the right direction."

The Phillies (33-37) have lost seven of nine and didn't score until being down to their final out in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Colorado, as Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard drove in ninth-inning runs.

Howard, 7 for 16 in his last four games, is 1 for 9 with a homer and six strikeouts lifetime against Haren.

Washington has won six of the last eight meetings with Philadelphia.
